Saumur in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in Saumur, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Saumur sits on the Loire River and is known for its striking hilltop château overlooking a historic old town of tuffeau-stone buildings. The area is a major center for Loire Valley wines, especially sparkling Saumur, with many producers offering cellar visits in former troglodyte caves. It’s also home to the prestigious Cadre Noir national equestrian school, which stages renowned riding displays. Nearby, museums such as the tank-focused Musée des Blindés add another distinctive attraction for visitors.
With favorites like Musée du Champignon, LANGLOIS | Boutique - Dégustation - Visites des Caves, and Caves Ackerman, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like L' Aromate and Restaurant Le Carrousel so you can get the best taste of Saumur while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Perched atop a hill, Château de Saumur has a rich history as the medieval fortress of the Dukes of Anjou. Over time, it served various purposes including as a residence, prison, armory and now houses a city museum. The castle offers stunning views of the surrounding area and features sparse but intriguing interiors with ancient toy collections. The site has undergone extensive restoration and provides an excellent vantage point over Saumur.
Spectacularly beautiful Chateau - worth visiting just to see the outside. Not really much to see inside though - a couple of rooms and a lot of ceramics and old horsey stuff ( strong equine tradition in Saumur). As is usual in France the information boards are only in French but there are guide pamphlets in other languages. If you can’t access the interior due to mobility issues you haven’t missed much but worth seeing just for the outside. Really is beautiful.
Carl K — Google review
We had a memorable visit, especially because of the powerful and beautiful fashion exhibit. This was such an unexpected surprise. The range of ceramics on view was memorable and, as a decorative arts historian, fascinating. Displays of objects associated with the long historical importance of equestrian activities associated with Saumur were also interesting. If you find yourself in Saumur, this is worth a visit. Be warned that you can take a steep hike up to the Château but there are easier ways to walk so take that into consideration.
Alexandra D — Google review
Beautiful chateau, so much to see. Amazing architecture, displays of artifacts and information boards. Staff friendly and helpful. Toilets were rank, someone had made a right mess.. Very interesting reading about the history of the chateau. Highly recommend.
Ian B — Google review
Did not visit the inside as it is mainly various temporary expositions. The outside and the views over Saumur are well worth the detour. Old Town is lovely and the sense of peacefulness of a mid size French town on the river Loire is amazing.
B — Google review
9 euros each for entry. Vaguely interesting to visit inside but I was surprised at some of the displays - Persian ladies clothing and Chinese plates seemed incongruous. A couple of boards were available recounting the history of the Chateau but otherwise not so interesting. The city views were enchanting but much more could be made of the site really. Beware steep steps up and down. Perhaps a guided tour would be a good idea?
Jon I — Google review
Well worth the visit. You can walk around the ramparts for free but 9.50€ to enter the museum and the Keep. There are also two restaurants there for coffee or lunch available until 2pm. Great views over the valley.
Douglas L — Google review
Beautiful setting, even if Google did not tell us about a parking facility near the entrance which would have saved us a big climb. Impressive chateau, the Loire is famous for them

The tourist information center Office de tourisme - SAUMUR VAL DE LOIRE is extremely helpful and offers a lot of information about the area, including travel tickets, bike rides, and toilet facilities. It is open from 9:30am to 6pm every day.
We had a lovely experience here made all the more enjoyable by meeting Melissa who was so helpful with information & booking the town train and a visit to Bovet Ladubay winery for us. Many thanks, Ivor & Di

Great tourist information with friendly staff, lots of leaflets and local information and good clean toilets. They also have a wine tasting section just next door where they always have a variety of local wines open for you to taste for free with no obligation to buy. It's well worth a visit if you enjoy wine!

Super helpful staff and lots of information about the area. If you're visiting the town then the little tourist train stops right outside and gives you a quick overview of Saumur. It stops at the chateau for a picture stop too (and it's free in your birthday!) Collected plenty of information for our next visit to the Loire..
Pete D — Google review
Excellent tourist office - always busy but plenty of staff to help and a little shop, too. Also has excellent clean (free) toilets.
Paul R — Google review
We had an excellent experience of the Office's package for the Anjou Vélo Vintage festival 2024. This comprised surpurb accommodation, bike hire and entry to one of the organised rides, a boat trip past the majestic waterfront of Saumur, and a delicious lunch. Special commendation is due to Angélique; she was our main contact and coordinated the package. She was helpful and friendly in all her communications, and she went out of her way during our stay to assist us.

Lovely staff, always very helpful. The attached wine store has a good selection at reasonable prices whilst the tourist information office also has gifts and local produce available. And, of course, plenty of information about what's going on locally.

The Cavalry Museum, situated in the heart of Saumur within the restored stables of the Cadre Noir, offers a captivating journey through French cavalry history from the 15th century to modern times. The museum showcases remarkable artifacts such as General De Lattre de Tassigny's jacket and kepi worn during the German surrender in 1945, as well as uniforms, weapons, and body armor with compelling stories behind them.
A superb museum that outlines the history of the mounted French Cavalry service. The displays were very informative and helpful. I could have spent twice as long as I did. A definite must-see when in Saumur.
Stuart P — Google review
Lots to see but no English tour available when we visited. Felt like lots of repetition but well worth a visit.
Steven G — Google review
Well worth a visit as this museum clearly lays out the evolution of cavalry warfare, in an easy to follow route. You don’t have to be interested or knowledgeable in military matters as everything is very clear and also linked to key battles and their impact on history. This was recommended to us by a previous visitor and we are very pleased we followed the recommendation. An added bonus is that it was very quiet when we went, so we could take our time to read the interesting information provided.
J M — Google review
No horses here! Interesting to see the Napoleonic history and some of the exhibits. Most of the displays have an English board as well as as a French one. 6 Euro entrance fee which is cheaper than some.... I noticed the French landed August 1st 1944 but I always thought D Day was somewhat earlier?
Jon I — Google review
Important museum of the history of French Cavalry from early times to modern day with a lot on the 19C and also WW1/WW2. Some amazing artwork on display.
Paul R — Google review
An interesting museum in an old building in the military quarter of Saumur. A lot of attention for Napoleon and the many (other) wars that France was engaged in until now.

Great museum, with also some tanks, close by to be viewed.

It would have been better if English subtitles were used. Again repetitive displays. Value for Money...only if your French.

L'Escargot 49 is a French restaurant in Saumur that serves food from the European region. The outdoor seating allows diners to enjoy the fresh air, and the private dining area allows for more intimate encounters. The waitstaff is attentive and professional, and highchairs are available for infants. There is a wine list with options for every taste, as well as a variety of cocktails.
A restaurant situated away from the tourist centre. We had a very delicious meal - have eaten lots of duck breasts on this trip and tonight’s was the most tender with a delicious combination of flavours. The beef also tasty with fresh seasonal vegetables. Waitstaff friendly and helpful. Highly recommend you eat here!

We arrived Saumur around 7PM, we found this restaurant near our apt and accept walk-ins. Was a very decent and lovely meal, cozy and neat decor, each dish tasted great and not too heavy in cream and butter.
Mina T — Google review
Excellent excellent food. Go for the: shrimps as a starter, the rack of lamb as main, and the French toad for desert. They are all great. The menu is in French only, but the waiter is very helpful. Reservation is probably advised. We came on a Monday, off season, and it was packed.

Good experience there, nice terrasse, menu bistro type with good and fresh products, original recipes with some fusion notes. Local wines with good deals. Efficient service

Awesome restaurant, friendly helpful staff and excellent skilled chef / owner (who we had the pleasure to meet with after our dinner). Cozy spot in the garden to dine at, food was delicious and creative. The wines recommended and served were amazing too (complementing all the dishes we ate so nicely). Short 5-10mins stroll from the centre of the town, highly recommend this hidden gem of a restaurant which we discovered by chance upon a recommendation by one of our hotel reception staff (who said it is her fav restaurant to eat at in Samur!). Please visit and enjoy as much as we did...thank you for an excellent meal!! Cheers

Caves Ackerman offers a unique experience, blending art with the natural beauty of its cave architecture. Visitors can explore grand and ephemeral art installations within the caves, carved from tuffeau stone. The tour includes an informative wine tasting, making it suitable for families with children. Guests can also enjoy exploring an old-fashioned game room and purchase wines to take home. The tour covers the winery's history, bottling process, and storage methods while showcasing innovative and mesmerizing art displays.
My visit to Caves Ackerman exceeded my expectations on every level!! It was so much more than just a wine tasting! Our tour guide did a fantastic job covering the history of the winery along with the bottling and storage process. The art displays were a great addition! They are very innovative and hypnotic!! I thought their wine tasting was generous. We each were given three glasses ranging from sweet to sparkling. I loved them all! I enjoyed shopping there too! The displays are set up beautifully. I wanted to buy everything! I only wish they shipped internationally!! Excellent customer service. This was a really unique place to visit in Saumer, France!

We visited Caves Ackerman in Saumur and had a great experience exploring the vast underground cellars filled with history, art, and wine. Established in 1811, it's the oldest sparkling wine producer in the Loire Valley, known for pioneering Saumur Brut and Crémant de Loire. The tour was both fun and informative, with interactive aroma stations, engaging videos about the cave’s history and wine production, and unique art displays like string animal drawings and stunning light projections. We especially enjoyed the wine tasting at the end, with non-alcoholic options available for children and non-drinkers. An unforgettable and enriching experience for wine lovers and curious travelers alike!

Wow this was quite an experience, wine caves in the quarry that had been used for the stone in Saumur. Artistic, nice escape from the heat, around 12c in the caves maybe cooler in parts and it was 36 c outside! Entertainment and lighting. Self guided tour.. easy to get around. Wine tasting after, not my taste but nice glasses and experience.
Caroline R — Google review
Well worth a visit. Beautiful and extraordinary cave to go around with some interesting use of the space with the art sculptures. We enjoyed a game of bowls before an imformative wine tasting. Then on to buy a bottle or two. All the team welcoming and friendly, as well as being very knowledgeable about the wines

One of the best caves we’ve ever visited – it feels more like an art museum! Even if you don’t join the guided tour, the self-guided one is a must. This is not just a cave, it's a masterpiece! After the visit we enjoyed a lovely tasting in the garden, while the main tasting room looked premium but was a bit crowded. The wines are excellent and reasonably priced. Totally recommend!
Alexandru L — Google review
Great place to visit with the family! We have two children 8 and 10 so knew we weren't going to be able to do a proper tour and tasting, so having the option for a self guided tour was great. We even learnt a bit about production, the children enjoyed the sensory games and the (admittedly slightly odd) ball games at the end. Then they were offered fizzy grape juice whilst we did a little tasting. Perfect experience for what we were looking for!
Georgina B — Google review
We had a lovely time here. We just dropped in (didnt book) and were able to do s self guided tour of the caves. There is a lot of history and also very cool modern art! The art was one of the highlights. We then had a tasting of some sparkling and still wines. The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. Overall great visit.

Incredible self-guided your and tasting following. The Cave is enormous and has many art installations in addition to telling the story of how the winery can to be and the method of making the wines. Highly recommended!

We had a wonderful dinner tonight. Everything was a perfect blend of different aromes like the restaurants name suggests. We had tartar, fish, beef and chicken, followed by nice desserts. All ingredients were of very good quality and well prepared. Moreover, we were well advised about the wine choice by the very friendly prophetess. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening and hope for many returns.

Such a great experience! The food is amazing, the service is great and quick, the staff is very correct and friendly and the food is amazing. Did I say that twice? That's how good it is. It's most economical to have 3 courses, so we were stuffed by the end of the night, but happy to have tasted all the goodness. We were able to just walk in without reservation, but I'd recommend to reserve upfront to avoid disappointments.

Nevermind - we had a table Almost 10 minutes passed till someone noticed us, putted a menu on the table and ignored us when we asked about english version We left the place, they don't deserve my money. I saw more than one traditional resturant in the loire valley which give nicer altitude to none french tourists

We really enjoyed our visit here last night. The service was brilliant - the hostess was very friendly and welcoming. The seafood was fresh and cooked to perfection. My husband also enjoyed the beef for starters and the pork chops for main which were both succulent. Also, very reasonably priced. Absolute perfection and highly recommended !

Exquisite food at friendly prices. Worthy of a Michelin star? A three course menu can be enjoyed for as little as 22-30 euro's, a superb bottle of wine 20. For this you will excellent food!

A nice French restaurant where chef does take interest in the needs of the clientele! Some English is spoken by the staff who are very happy to serve. The ambience was very relaxing, people are allowed to chat long after eating and the food is at the normal high standard required by the French.

Went here for lunch on a Wednesday at around 13:15. Had made a reservation for three people but it wasn't that busy. At €13 for two courses it was really amazing value. All of us had steak to start with a pepper sauce and chips. The deserts were the best though. We tried the creme brulee, the Ile Fountain (apologies for the spelling) and a chocolate gateau with poached pears inside. All really tasty. With a bottle of red wine and two soft drinks the total bill came to just sixty three euros. Best meal we had so far in Saumur and probably one of the most reasonable. Couldn't recommend it enough

(Translated by Google) Arrival at 9:35 p.m. with my partner to eat there in a warm place. But chairs already on the tables and impossible to eat on site. For the restaurant to close at 10 p.m., this is a shame, especially when there are 6 employees present who are on break. I don't think it would take 25 minutes to clean a table of 2. Especially since the broom hadn't been swept so it wouldn't have bothered the few crumbs that we might have added. (Original) Arrivée à 21h35 avec mon conjoint pour manger sur place bien au chaud. My husband and I ate here on our honeymoon- almost two years ago- and we still talk about it. My wife and I are visiting Loire Valley and had to drive for about 1:30 to the restaurant, which we thought was worth the culinary experience. Little did we know - the place was simply closed! I tried to call, but was getting only an automated message in reply. The day was pretty ruined... Later I sent an email asking for explanations and the reply was "We really apologize for the cancellation, but we send you yesterday morning the cancellation because the chef was sick. Sorry if you don’t receive it." Well, we did not receive it indeed. Wonder if it was sent...

Fantastic, inventive meal in a modern, comfortable setting. Friendly staff, who were helpful modulo a couple of small misunderstandings with our limited French. And things took a fair time to get started, but when the courses began, the pace was fine. The chef is known for his inventive use of spices, which imparted subtle hints of unusual flavors without ever overwhelming. Probably the best restaurant in Saumur (an opinion confirmed by our hosts in a nearby chateau, la Seignere). A treat of a meal, with very good wine pairings.

Can there be a better dining experience. Each time we go to Gambetta it gets better. Chef Pihours is as creative and thoughtful as it gets. The ambiance is calm and distinguished without being formal or stuffy. We simply love this restaurant and try to go as much as we can!

Where to begin. Quite honestly the highlight of our trip to the Loire. We went two days in a row as lunch was so excellent on visit number obe, and the chef (Mickaël Pihours - what a legend who deserves his Michelin star and more) ensured we had a different dish for each course on both days. What a meal (or meals I should say). I have gluten and lactose allergies and nothing was too much trouble. His team prepared special dishes for me for each course (not the normal just removing half the plate so you are left with salad plus plain meat). The eggs and prawn starter was out of this world (trust me) and my favourite main dish was the salmon: cooked to perfection and I'm still having dreams about both. The Japanese influences came through, perfectly paired with the delicious fresh produce and French cooking techniques. We sat outside in the courtyard and the excellent waiting team were outstanding. If you're going to do one thing this trip. Go here for lunch. 30 euros for one of the best meals of my life. You'd be a fool not to go at least once.

Day 2

East side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the east side side of town. Start the day off with Musée des Blindés, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Distillerie Combier. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

The Musée des Blindés is a remarkable museum that showcases an extensive collection of over 200 French and foreign armored vehicles, along with various historical artifacts related to tanks. Founded in 1977 by Colonel Michel Aubry, the museum houses nearly 900 armored vehicles, with around 200 of them being operational. The museum also hosts the Carrousel military tattoo annually, featuring live demonstrations of some of these historic tanks.
So very many horrible but necessary beasts of war on display here. You are reminded that the ingenious creation of tanks broke the awful deadlock of World War 1. The largely inferior French Tanks at the start of WW2 were no match to the numbers and might of the German Machines on display. I was amazed by the remarkable tank created by the French Resistance on display and saddened by noting that the major powers such as Russia have been involved in supplying these beasts of war in nearly all of the awful conflicts all over the world. The number and quality of the tanks on display all accompanied by excellent descriptions is truly remarkable. The shop has a fantastic selection of items. The lady at the desk is most charming and welcoming and is an absolute asset as she speaks 3 or 4 languages fluently.

Basing my review on how much my tank mad son enjoyed it. And on that basis 5 stars!. Well laid out, plenty of real tanks and some super models as well.
John — Google review
A superb collection of historic, and often unique, armoured fighting vehicles. Spanning every era from WW1 to near modern, it is a very traditional museum (no bad thing!) i.e. it's simply a giant shed with loads of tanks etc on display, each properly labelled up with its history and features. No unnecessary dioramas...... A number of the tanks are in running order too, however none was when I visited. The only thing missing was its Tiger 1, which I took to be away somewhere being rebuilt. Good shop too; just a pity most of the really interesting books are in French (naturellement). You need 2 hours or more......
Mark G — Google review
If you like tanks this is your place. A parade of tanks outside awaiting restoration. And hanger after hanger of 1stWW 2ndWW and more modern tanks. Took my two boys 15 and 8 they were enthralled. We spent about 2 hours there.

Great value for €11, world class collection. AMX 50 surbaissé next to the ARL44 is a truly intimidating sight! 10 points for whoever spots the vehicle sporting the 21st century schizoid man
William B — Google review
Today we visited the Tank Museum, and it was an impressive experience. The collection features well-maintained tanks from different eras, covering everything from the early days of tank development to modern military vehicles. The museum was almost empty, which was surprising, given how interesting the topic is. The ticket price was just 11 euros per person, which felt very reasonable considering how expensive it must be to maintain such a collection. Each tank has an informational stand, also available in English, detailing its technical specifications and historical use, making it easy to learn more about each vehicle. One unique feature was the use of mannequins on some tanks and equipment, helping to visualize how soldiers would have operated them. The exhibition includes legendary tanks like the Tiger, Tiger II, T-34, and Panther, alongside many other iconic war machines. One downside was that the bathrooms were not working, which was inconvenient. But overall, for anyone interested in military history, engineering, or simply impressive machines, this museum is absolutely worth a visit!

Caves Louis de Grenelle is a must-visit in Saumur, offering a unique experience of wine tasting and tours in their ancient cave systems. The vineyard is known for its award-winning sparkling white wines, which can be sampled along with local specialties like la fouee and galipettes. The tuffeau cellars, located 12m deep beneath the town streets, provide an intriguing setting for wine aging.
This winery is one of the last family-run establishments out of the seven in Saumur, adding to its charm. The tour was concise and well-organised, effectively explaining the traditional champagne method. Despite most of the group being French, the guide made a point to explain everything in English as well. The staff at the tasting were fantastic. I'm so glad I discovered this little winery; the experience was wonderful.

I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and tasting at the Maison Grenelle. It was fascinating going into the tunnels and hearing about how they make their wine, and great to taste it. I just wish I'd been able to buy some to take away (being on a bike, this wasn't an option!)

We arrived quite late, close to closing time, but Olivia was very welcoming and kind. She guided us through a wonderful tasting and explained the wines with great passion. Sadly, we didn’t have time to visit the cellars, but the experience was still excellent!
Alexandru L — Google review
It was a nice experience. When I arrived there was no guided tour and tasting scheduled. But a very kind and knowledgeable girl offered to accompany me. During the visit to the winery he explained the history, the techniques, the vineyards to me and answered many questions in both English and Italian. Then he made me taste 7 wines, 5 whites and 2 reds. Very good. I bought two exceptional ones to drink on New Year's Eve

They do only sparking wines here. This place does not have its own wine yards but uses other growers juices. Maybe good if you haven’t seen other much bigger cellars before. However at 5 eur / person it’s a fair deal. As there were only 4 foreigners taking part in the afternoon tour (at 2 pm) it was only in English.

The Rotunda (is that the word - the dome thing) is fabulous and the windows an unsung joy. Also lovely to see the biblical themes throughout. But goodness me it needs some work. Cracks everywhere. Props holding things up. Scaffolding that may soon needs restoring itself. An embarrassment for a rich country to let such an amazing building get into this state.

Distillery
Food & Drink
Located in Saumur, Distillerie Combier is the oldest distillery in the Val de Loire, dating back to 1834. It is renowned for its Triple Sec liqueur and offers an interesting and informative tour. Visitors are given a brief history of Combier and the distillation process before touring the distillery and copper stills. The tasting experience is comprehensive, offering samples of liqueurs, absinthe, syrups, and soups.
If you're a discerning drinker and find ever find yourself in Saumer, you should visit Distillerie Combier. Do the tour and Perhaps buy a bottle of the best Absinthe in the world like I did.
Mark B — Google review
Excellent products from the absinthes through the triple secs and fruity liqueurs. We went on the tour, which was very informative. As others have said, the tour is in french. If you don't speak French well enough to understand the tour (as we don't) you are given a book that explains what is being said, but, despite what you are told, this is not the same as what the guide says. While our French is not good enough to discern the details, it was clear that much more was added verbally. To be fair to our guide, I think she recognised this and started repeating the descriptions in (very good!) English after the French about half way through. While the tastings were small, this was appreciated by the driver in our group and our guide made it clear that we could have more afterwards, and while I would have personally preferred more, in hindsight, their approach is probably right. A minor complaint is that the opening hours vary significantly from advertised. It took us three attempts to actually get in as the "open all day 10h to 19h" turned into a note on the door saying "back at 13:30". Upon returning at 13:45, it had been changed to "back at 14:30". Also, they only give tours at certain times, so check the website (and maybe call beforehand) before visiting. Some annoyances around timings aside, definitely worth the visit.
Jon W — Google review
Very interesting and informative tour. The staff were friendly and helpful and they made a real effort to translate the tour into English for us. We were given a brief history of Combier and the distillation process before touring the distillery and copper stills. The tasting was great and very comprehensive. We were offered samples of whatever we wanted including liqueurs, absinthe, syrups and soupes. Théo is a top man. He was very helpful, knowledgable and a great guide for the experience. Lovely way to spend an hour - would highly reccomend.
B H — Google review
We booked an English tour, but upon arrival at the distillery we were informed that the tour would need to be exclusively in French, as both French and English speaking guests had booked this time slot. It wasn’t clear why both languages couldn’t be spoken during the tour, or why preference was given towards native French speakers when we had booked an English tour. Fortunately the French guests were bi-lingual and told our guide that an English tour was fine for them. As it all worked out, still giving this tour five stars; but I would have been disappointed had the tour been in a language we didn’t understand. The tour itself was fascinating — we learned a brief history of Combier, the liquors and syrups produced, and the process of distilling triple sec. The original stills from the late 1800s are still in use! Our guide, Elise, was friendly, informative and interesting. She spoke fluent English & French. The tasting was also fun — it included their 4 most famous liquors (which are excellent), and she also offered us a taste of 2 others we were interested in trying. The tastes were small (maybe 1.5-2 ounces across all 6 tastes in total), which allowed us to enjoy them all responsibly. Overall, I’d highly recommend! The only thing that could have made this better was avoiding the initial confusion of our ‘English tour’ needing to be performed in French. While it all worked out (and Elise was kind enough to not charge us the 6€ fee as a result), I hope that Combier finds a way to ensure that all future guests get the tour in the language they signed up for.
Kyle W — Google review
Very disappointed. As someone who works in the tourist industry, I am always on a look out for new things to recommend to our guests, so we decided to try the original triple sec distillery in France. The website said that tours were in both English and French. Upon arrival we were informed that they are not. Most of our group didn't speak French. We were handed a little pamphlet and told that the girl giving the tour says exactly the same thing. Which was not the case at all. I spent the entire tour translating what I could while following along. The distillery visit lasted perhaps 15 minutes. The guide was very soft spoken and didn't bother to talk towards me, only including the native French speakers. The tasting was just as quick. The tasting glasses were the size of a medicine/pill cup. We were given barely enough to cover the bottom of our glass with no way to rinse our glasses or cleanse our palettes between each tasting. As a family who have visited many distilleries around the world, it was by far the worst tour we have ever experienced. Not worth your time.
Natalya S — Google review
As others have said, you may be given the impression that you are booking a tour in English, but will be given two laminated info sheets to read while you listen to an hour of French presentation. Skip the tour and just taste the products if you can. The shop/tasting bar is a bit chaotic at the end of the tour so more reason to avoid the Tour.
Tom S — Google review
Old fashioned distillery producing innovative drinks. However production methods are antiquated and could be enhanced to improve productivity as well as profitabilty. I will not be surprised if this company is taken over in the next few years (i.e by a third country company - Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Brazilian, etc) as a way to enter the EU market. The demonstration was good.
Vijay B — Google review
Amazing tour. Tour lasted 30 mins - tasting session lasted 30 mins. The idea obviously worked as we went home having bought a bottle! The tour was in French but there was a leaflet in English. Recommended

Nestled in the heart of the Loire region, Restaurant L'Alchimiste offers a delightful dining experience that perfectly balances quality food with a relaxed atmosphere. While service may be leisurely, it sets the stage for an unhurried meal where you can savor every bite. L'Habana Café is a charming restaurant where the owner's dedication shone through during a rainstorm that caused flooding. The staff are accommodating, especially to those with limited French vocabulary. The service is efficient, and the pizzas are delicious. The friendly staff and good food make it a recommended spot for an enjoyable dining experience.
We have eaten here twice and both times have been excellent. The second night we had a powerful rain storm that began to flood the restaurant, the owner refused to let that be an issue and heroically defended his establishment against the areal flooding and then continued to make excellent pizza and salads! His staff are very friendly and more than willing to work with customers who only have a basic level of French vocabulary. Highly recommend this restaurant if you want a nice casual dinner with friends.

Gardening throughout the ages. Very informative.
DRP — Google review
Learned a lot about the history of gardens, agriculture and how humans gave used plants, from long distant past to present.
Bernd E — Google review
This place is absolutely fascinating Beautiful and peaceful but that's only a small part of its merits. There is a very well planned and set out journey which takes you through the whole history of our relationship with plants. Some of them are quite extraordinary. There is a glorious subterranean part too. I can't praise the designers and gardeners highly enough. Enjoy.

Fascinating, a natural museum explaining the development of horticulture, even if you ate only slightly interested in gardening there is interest here!!

Pierre et Lumière is an underground exhibit located in the Loire Valley, specifically in Saumur St Hilaire St Florent. The exhibit features impressive sculptures carved from tufa stone, depicting various landmarks of the region such as churches, chateaux, and entire towns including Bauge village. The attention to detail and craftsmanship of these sculptures is remarkable. Visitors can explore the solemn subterranean galleries where each sculpture is perfectly illuminated.
Lots of sculptures of Loire churches and landmarks carved by one person out of stone, and in caves. Worth a visit if you are in the area
Karie M — Google review
Really nice way to spend an hour and learn about the area. The sculptures are very impressive and the staff were very helpful
Richard M — Google review
Awesome and unique! Highly recommended esp. if hot outside. Take a sweater as it is chilly inside.

Sculptures in limestone of several French churches set in a cave. Unique curiosity. Worth a look
Phil C — Google review
Fantastically cool on a hot day. Limestone caves with ever growing collection of sculptures depicting local landmarks.
Colin B — Google review
False publicity, don't go with kids under 7. Architecture in the valley is obviously not a family experience, that's why the site seduces kids with a promise to carve something themselves at the end. It isn't mentioned anywhere that the sculpturing is only meant for 7+ years old (paying tickets). We were refused the kits and therefore didn't go in. If we knew we would never have come. "A l’issue de la visite, les enfants qui le souhaitent peuvent s’initier à la sculpture." "A l’issue de la visite, une expérience inoubliable pour les enfants ! Une pierre de tuffeau, des outils et des conseils avisés."
Gu B — Google review
Very impressive stone carvings. A great visit on a rainy day and the kids loved the carving at the end. But it is a bit expensive and the water around some of the models is pretty dirty and should be cleaned from time to time. We also got the offer to visit the mushroom museum after. Unless you are really into mushrooms don't do it

Beautifully done sculptures, in an interesting location. Great for when the weather is hot and want to cool down, whilst doing something interesting. Can even push the pram all the way round.

The guided tour provides in-depth lessons on winemaking, a factory tour, cellar exploration, and a tasting of 9 wines at great value. The informative and humorous guide shares fantastic facts about the wines, making it an enjoyable experience for visitors.
I visited with my parents in May and it was amazing! We did the tour with James and his passion and knowledge was definitely a highlight of their trip! He was so great at explaining everything so they could understand it, a real professional who also did us a fantastic tasting. Thank you so much James and Langlois-Chateau I cannot recommend highly enough!

Had a great experience at l'anglois Winery! The tour was informative and fun, and James was a fantastic guide- knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate. The caves were impressive and the wine tasting was generous and tasty. I highly recommend! I came alone and James was very friendly and made me feel part of the group :)

Excellent visit. We joined an English tour where we learnt all about the grapes used in the production, how wonderful is produced before starting the tour. Be aware there are 80 steps from the entrance up to the production area so not suitable for those with limited mobility breathing issues etc. The wine tasting was great - we tasted 4 sparkling and 3 still

We stopped here for a tasting and were pleasantly surprised that a 3-wine tasting was free. I believe we were served by the owner, who was incredibly kind and welcoming. The wines were very good, the atmosphere was lovely, and the place has a premium feel. Sadly, we didn’t have time to see the cellars, but I’m sure they’re worth it.

It was a very welcoming place. James was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. The wine was beautiful. Would definitely recommend a visit - you get a decent variety of wine and sparkling wine for €5 per person.

I would give it 10 star's if I could. My wife and 2 kids did the English tour and it was fantastic. Our guide was so knowledgeable and patient. She explained things really well and answered our many questions with great patience. At the tasting afterwards James explained all 7 wines individually and in great detail. We had a superb time and I don't think it's possible to do it better. My only regret is that I couldn't buy loads of wine at their very competitive prices as we fly back home with Ryanair.

Had a great tasting here, I think the host’s name was Suzanne. Informative, generous, interesting. In English and French. Worth €5 to taste the range Worth calling ahead of time to see if cave visits are possible.

5 stars in every way. Our guide James was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and approachable. Great tour around the facilities and the caves. Really was excellent

Les Quatre Saisons is a local eatery that specializes in regional delicacies such as the "fouee" and "galipette," which is a generously sized mushroom stuffed and cooked over an open fire. They also offer a variety of traditional and vegetarian menus. This restaurant provides an authentic, affordable, no-frills experience that captures the essence of traditional French cuisine.
A truly enjoyable authentic no frills value for money traditional French restaurant. Exactly what I expect away from the main hub well worth looking for. Quality food well prepared.
