Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a massive mountainside sculpture featuring the depictions of four former American presidents. The idea for this monument was conceived by South Dakota State Historian Doane Robinson as a way to attract tourists and boost the economy of South Dakota. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum was hired to carve the granite spires, but he chose Mount Rushmore instead due to the fragility of the original site.
I went twice. First time was during the day. The second time was at night. So glad I went the the lighting ceremony the mountain lights up after a video ceremony in the outdoor theatre. It was pitch dark then wow. The faces were more striking and so clear it was just spectacular. I got there at 9pm thinking it would be less buisy than the daytime viewing. Theatre was completely full with the balcony area standing area full as well. Seats avail near flags offered a beautiful view. They leave the lights on til closing. The night viewing gave the monument the best experience for me and my photos. The difference is like night and day. You only pay once if you save your ticket. Deal for 60 and over $5.00 for our car load. Day and night photos difference. I see why people will pack in there at 9pm to see the sculpture it really comes to life out of total darkness.

Spent two hours walking on the trail around the monument, allowing for interesting views thereof. 485 steps, so be aware of this. Highly recommend the effort! The Coast Guard were doing a promotional video with fly-overs the day we visited. American flags were present for a naturalization ceremony. Very memorable day.

We visited Mount Rushmore today, and it was an unforgettable experience. Seeing the monument in person is far more impressive than any photo could capture. The sheer size and detail of the carvings of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln are absolutely remarkable, and the setting in the Black Hills makes it even more striking. The park is beautifully maintained, and the pathways and viewing areas are very well laid out. We spent time at the visitor center, which does an excellent job explaining the history, design, and construction of the monument—it really added depth to the visit. Parking was convenient and well organized, though there is a small fee. The weather was perfect today, which made walking around and taking in the views even more enjoyable. It did get a little crowded in the afternoon, so going earlier in the day is probably best. The evening lighting ceremony was the highlight—it was both moving and patriotic, bringing the day to a perfect close. Overall, visiting Mount Rushmore today was an incredible experience that blended history, artistry, and natural beauty. Definitely worth seeing in person.

So fun! Lots of great information in the museums from videos, to artifacts, and live interactions with the park rangers. There is a great trail leading up towards the monument, lots of stairs but for sure worth it. Also highly recommend doing the Junior Ranger activity! So much fun for kids and adults!
Emily S — Google review
Mount Rushmore is definitely worth the visit! I recommend going early in the morning when the sun hits the faces perfectly — it makes for great views and photos. The parking lot is very close to the entrance, which makes access easy, and the whole site is well-maintained and clean. A great experience overall!
HS T — Google review
Wow! This Memorial has definitely changed since I last visited in 1994. The improvements are beautiful! We walked along the Presidential Trail and enjoyed the sculptures under a beautiful blue fall sky.

I was in SD visiting a friend and wanted to see Mt. Rushmore. The drive up was so beautiful, I moved the little towns on the way. We got there just before sunset and Mt. Rushmore was amazing to see. The place was clean and the gift shop was nice and not extremely overpriced. After dark the mountain is lit up and it was really cool. I definitely want to go back.
Naomi O — Google review
I thought this was great for $10 a car. We had to enter the long way? Because we have a dually truck (from deadwood the 385 to the 16 to Hill City to the 244. It was easy to get in and park. I liked the walkway of flags and the visitor center. Gift shop was great and the trail was neat too. Worth the fee and would come back because the area is so pretty but FYI it is smaller in person!

So much to do! We had a blast. All the staff were excellent - friendly and knowledgeable on each activity. We did the sled, tube slides, eagle thing, jump, rope course thing, and 800 foot zipline - all was great! My 7 and 11 year olds loved it all.
Kie H — Google review
This was a fun experience. We’ve been to the Black Hills several times and we were looking for something different. 4 people in our group, 2 did the zip line and the other 2 did the ski lifts for the views. There’s a lot of other things to do but we didn’t have enough time. The workers were nice and seemed to enjoy being there. We went on a week day and it wasn’t super busy but it was steady. I’d like to go back next time we’re in the area.
Maura L — Google review
Very nice slow ride to the top. It is very low getting off the chair, so be ready. The restaurant was very nice, extremely friendly young lady tending to customers. Chicken salad was delicious. Do not buy the meal ticket, as you can spend less ordering individual items. The view of Mt. Rushmore is from the side and very nice, even on a rainy day. Grounds are very pretty and extremely well kept. Restrooms at the top. Would recommend this adventure.
Pam M — Google review
Great little fun park! The aerial adventure park was one of the best I have been to. Safety measures were great & employees were on the ball with any issues. Tubing, Soaring Eagle and drop were fun also, though the chairlift for the Alpine Slide was down while we were there so we couldn’t do the much anticipated ride.
Kevin M — Google review
We went zip lining for the first time! Collie and Dimitri were our amazing guides. They helped with our gear, set us up on the platforms and came with us the entire way. We opted for the full adventure which was roughly over an hour long and over a mile of zip lining. We highly recommend trying this out. Ask for Collie and Dimitri to be your guides. They are absolutely the best. They really care and love what they do!! Don’t forget to sign your name on the survivors board lol 😁
Adventures C — Google review
Chairlift was fun and they have some really nice gardens with waterfalls and overlooks up top. Can even catch a glimpse of Mt. Rushmore! They also have a little restaurant up there with great views but sadly it was closed for the season already. Staff was also really friendly and accommodating. Would def go back to try the restaurant!

*Kid friendly, infant friendly-ish *****edit: there is RV parking at the end of the gravel lot according to the owners! This place is so much fun! The price seemed a little high, as you have to pay for each activity and not just an entrance fee, but their rain check policy is great! I only was able to use two of my paid activities when I visited but I've got rain checks for all i couldn't do! The alpine coaster is super fun, and on the chair ride up you can see mount rushmore! The alpine coaster can be as fast or slow as you feel comfortable. I went down like a snail in the left lane, as the right lane is for speed! The tube hill is super fun! They have 3 fast lanes and one kid lane thats not as steep and bumpy. The zipline is short but fun! The jump tower is an auto belay that lowers you down to the ground. Those were the only activities we could do before the storm rolled in. The weather changes fast in the black hills. If it is only raining the chair lift and zip line continue to operate. The tubing hill and alpine slide closes bc it gets too dangerous to ride down. If you're on the alpine slide when it starts to rain you are instructed to get out and walk your sled down the hill. If there is lightning everything closes. You get rainchecks for every activity you didn't get to do! This place is very kid friendly. Check each individual activity for age, height and weight restrictions. Supposedly the chair lift is for "all ages" however in my opinion its definitely not safe to bring anyone under 3yo on it. I did not see a lactation room and there isn't anywhere private to nurse, but there are a few Adirondack chairs, picnic tables and bleachers under some shade so theres plenty of places to sit with Littles while the big kids go on the activities.

really fun. would recommend the zipline (1-2 hour one), but it is a bit pricey. the slide is great though (if you get the long zipline tour then you get a free slide ride)

The National Presidential Wax Museum, situated near Mount Rushmore in Keystone, South Dakota, is a must-visit attraction for history enthusiasts. Created by renowned wax artist Katherine Stubergh, the museum showcases over 100 lifelike wax sculptures of iconic American figures. Visitors can witness pivotal moments in U.S. presidential history through these meticulously crafted replicas. It's an educational and patriotic experience suitable for the entire family.
We stopped here our first day in SD b/c it was raining. Great experience! We spent three hours in here! Each exhibit has an audio companion that you carry on a device. The reality of the figures was awesome. What makes this place unique is that the displays are not just the figures. They actually have historical moments recreated. Ex: Kennedy with John Jr., GWB with the NYFD firefighter at Ground Zero, Reagan with Gorbachev, and George Washington with Martha and Betsy Ross admiring the flag! Cameos by Thomas Edison, Winston Churchill, Al Gore, and many more. The bargain for this place is incredible.
Joe R — Google review
Wax figures are meticulously crafted and many of them have high degree of realism. Comparing to Madame Tussaud’s wax museum I would say the similarity there is way more accurate compared to here, but this did not affect our experience drastically. What I truly enjoyed is the amount of exhibits and the ability to spend time inside the museum while listening to historical events on a provided device. Would certainly recommend visiting this place for anyone who travels to see Mt Rushmore!
Alexander K — Google review
Went almost immediately after me & my mom went to Mt. Rushmore! Very historically accurate and a very good representation of all of the U.S. presidents! The price wasn't actually that bad, I'd 100% recommend going if you're in Keystone!
Test — Google review
It was fun to see all the wax figures, including those that were not Presidents. The only thing stopping a 5 star review - a few of the figures didn't accurately represent the President (in my opinion) and the audio for each station was a hit long.
Ryan S — Google review
This is a nice stop after Mt. Rushmore and would be especially educational for older children. Most of the figures are well done, however a few do not appear to have as accurate resemblance. Some of the settings also seem dated and need a refresher.
Sharon M — Google review
The person working the cash register was just clueless when I asked couple of basic questions about the museum but I guess that's to be expected these days,it seems the most people seem to be clueless unless they look up the info on their phone.

When you step through the door of Ruby House Restaurant, you'll be transported back in time to the Old West. The multilevel space with an Old West theme features beautiful wallpapers, turn-of-the-century cabinets and antique weaponry as well as period print and pictures in vintage frames. There's also a full bar available, so you can enjoy hearty American fare while relaxing in this unique restaurant.
This is a flash back into history! Very cool on the inside! We sat outside. Definitely plan to wait for a table. We just made a reservation and enjoyed drinks at Red Garter Saloon! The chopped buffalo is basically a buffalo burger with no bun. It was good.. The Indian taco was delicious!
Abigail J — Google review
Tourist trap. Completely overpriced for the quality of food. I paid $16 for a salad that came with cheap lettuce and barely any toppings—it was honestly embarrassing to eat. The mashed potatoes I ordered as a side with my steak were watery, lacked texture, and tasted like they were thinned out with water instead of being made with butter or cream. They were so bad I had to send them back. The trout was extremely fishy and lacked flavor—it was drowned in lemon, which didn’t help. Portions overall were ridiculously small. While the service was decent and I was seated quickly, that’s the only positive thing I can say. I strongly recommend skipping this place and driving to Rapid City instead for a proper meal.
Kelly L — Google review
This place is like stepping back in time. The decor will keep you looking around the room. The service was kind and as quick as they could be. The food was good but a little heavy on the salt. Absolutely stop in and try the apple crisp with Huckleberry ice cream.
Brandy J — Google review
They let us in, even close to closing hours. They have extremely good service and it really showed quality of service from the greeter to waitress 💯 At first, it looked like well decorated restaurant and we didn't really have that high of expectation. When we got the food, buffalo steak and a burger, it didn't look that well presented either 🤔 But the taste and quality of the food itself was very impressive. We had really great time and will definately be visiting again, since we visit keystone pretty often 👍🏻
Ryan W — Google review
The bourbon steak was delicious! The shrimp fetticini was also very good. The atmosphere was fantastic. It made you feel like you could be in the past. The staff was great and the service was quick. The bar side operates independently and the Red Garter staff was also great. They were more in period attite and the gentleman singer was very good. Loved our visit so much we went twice.
M S — Google review
The place is decked out like it's the late 1800's giving it a super authentic vibe. I had the blackhills trout and loved every bite, but the true hit of the night? The tartare sauce! I ate it on my baked potato as not to take a way from the fresh fish. It was simply one of the best sauces I have ever had. The cream of broccoli soup was savory and obviously made from scratch. I have found the staff here . .and really everywhere around town top notch. Alot of them travel from other countries to work the season and yet there dedication to service is A+ I would eat here again in a heartbeat.
Jeffrey S — Google review
They were busy do we got a buzzer and strolled the shops awaiting our call. Varied menu, service seemed a bit slow to take our order but picked up thereafter. Decor is interesting and keeps you absorbed while waiting . Hubbys protection was good, my Indian taco was not bad, but I was disappointed with the packet sour cream and guacamole, the salsa however was good.
Catherine S — Google review
This restaurant was fantastic. The only downside is that the portions could have been a bit bigger for some, like the chicken parmesan, but it's still good for the money you pay, as I got a side and soup with it. The decorations inside are fantastic. There are tons of pictures on the wall and old guns hanging up. You definitely get an older and western feel inside the restaurant like it's the 1800's. I didn't see anyone performing, but it looked like they had a nice stage and bar area there as well (we ate more upstairs). Full points for atmosphere. Outside, there were a lot of "weatern" looking places around it, so the restaurant is not necessarily a standalone. I highly recommend going if you are in the area and vacationing. This restaurant not only has great food, but it also is a place to sightsee.

Had a fantastic experience at Turtle Town, thanks to Junior, he was literally the best! Their friendly service made me feel right at home. The ice cream was rich and creamy, and the handmade chocolates were to die for. Highly recommend stopping by for some sweet treats and top-notch service!

Nice little coffee, fudge and ice cream shop on the route to Mt Rushmore. It’s not a sophisticated coffee shop but the service was great, coffee was ok. They do offer a 32 oz cold brew if you need a BIG coffee. It’s in the heart of the Keystone shopping/tourist district.

We went here twice during our visit. The ice cream was great, the coffee was good too. Not too costly compared to other places. I would recommend this for the family.

Stopped in here for a couple coffees. Awesome little Fudge and Coffee shop. They have all the sweets, fudge, taffy, ice cream, etc. The staff are awesome and are really knowledgeable about different types of coffee. Definitely stop in and support this small business.
Lonnie M — Google review
Stopped here after lunch before catching the train. We got a pecan cluster, coconut cluster, sea salt Carmel, and fudge. It was just okay. Pretty pricey. I wouldn't say it was great. I wish they had smaller pieces of fudge. Note: if you stop here they have different items in the street display vs in the store (saw this as we left and was disappointed as I would have tried something else). I wouldn't say the staff was welcoming/friendly but not totally unpleasant. The store is very small and cramped.
Courtney R — Google review
I visited here last week on a trip. I bought 2 peanut clusters and piece of fudge. I was shocked this totaled $20, but paid anyway because I didn’t want to ask them to put things back. I was expecting this chocolate/candy to be amazing, but it is some of the worst I’ve ever had. The peanut clusters were horrible. I don’t know what they use, but it did not taste like chocolate at all. And the fudge was almost like they didn’t let the sugar fully dissolve, it was gritty and had a weird taste. Everything ended up in the garbage, $20 worth of candy. This place is ridiculously overpriced and the chocolate is awful. I do not recommend it.
Lindsay B — Google review
Popped in for ice cream, limited choices, no prices on display, bored server who literally went through the motions, and expected a tip! Ice cream was ok but for $12 for two one scoop ices was expensive
Catherine S — Google review
This place looks amazing, and I believe the coffee is supposed to be amazing too. However, three of us went there to get three coffees, and we had some questions about the cold/hot/flavor of the coffee. The place wasn’t much crowded but we didn’t take much time. The host had a nice smile, so we were talking nicely with her. She was almost done preparing the first coffee which was supposed to be cold. We ordered two cold coffees and one hot coffee. She got offended for some reason when we told her that. She was like “I know what I am doing” and was very rude to us since then. She almost banged the coffees on the counter. The first coffee was delicious, but the other two (iced mochas) were too bitter. Tip: Don’t ask he questions about their flavors, just order what you have already tried.

Grizzly Creek is a laid-back restaurant that offers American and Tex-Mex cuisine in a cozy cabin-like setting with an outdoor patio. The diverse menu includes delicious dishes such as burgers, ribs, quesadillas, burritos, tacos, wings, and chips. While the ribs were found to be tough by some patrons, the chicken tenders and potato wedges received positive feedback. The friendly service and quick food delivery added to the overall experience.
Stopped here for lunch after seeing Mt Rushmore . Our food was great. Kids had wings and a salad. I had the fish tacos and loved them! My husband had the fajitas...i tried them also YUM!!

This was our most unpleasant meal on a wonderful vacation. The food was largely mediocre and the flies outside were simply out of control. We were sat near a trash can and spent the entire meal chasing flies off of our food (to no avail).

Nice little restaurant just below Mt. Rushmore. Has a patio beside a small creek as well as indoor seating. Food was reasonably priced and very tasty. Had a selection of a few buffalo dishes as well as usual steakhouse fair.

The atmosphere was quaint and lively. The menu was robust and varied. The prices were between $10 and $20 for most entrees. The drink menu included most coke products their craft beers were good. I enjoyed the BBQ Bourbon burger and it was juicy and cooked exactly the way I ordered it. The seasoned steak fries were very good (I highly recommend them). Over all a great place to bring either friend or family for a varied menu and relaxed atmosphere.

A pretty good experience overall. We started the night with wings and chips the wings and the chips we're both awesome. (the chips could use a little salt) Next we ordered some ribs and some chicken tenders for the child in the group. The food came so fast we weren't even done with the appitizer. The ribs were WAY TO Tough, but they were still good. I do not recommend them. The tenders we're good, but the fries that came with the tenders had no salt. The fries that came with the ribs were amazing. Over all pretty decent meal. Don't order the ribs. The place it self is nice and homey. I will definitely come here again never order the ribs.

Halleys West is a popular dining spot in Keystone known for its flavorful grills and welcoming atmosphere. The staff is praised for their friendliness and efficiency, making the dining experience enjoyable. Visitors recommend trying the buffalo burger, wings, and BLT, while also suggesting to opt for the cheese curds over fries. The option to switch any burger selection to a Bison Burger is appreciated by many. The outdoor seating is ideal for groups and families, with a satisfactory kids' menu available.

Service was great for my family and everyone else in the place. All were greeted with a smile and courtesy. Cashier was very polite and helpful. Pulled pork sandwich was much better than expected and kids liked their chicken tenders . We all got fries, which were fresh cut and cooked perfectly. The root beer float with 1919 root beer was delicious and a great way to end the meal. Seating was fine, but is limited.

A father and son team run this banging fine burger boutique. The burgers are super fresh and the salad was excellent. Yeah, I know who cares about a salad at a burger joint, but there are red and yellow peppers, mushrooms and tomatoes in a side salad. That never happens and when you are on the road getting your veggies is last on your list but these guys made it easy. Oh! And get some Huckleberry ice cream it was unique and awesome. I love getting new flavors when traveling in this was a winner. Yes, the Dairy Queen next door has burgers 2 for 5 bucks. Don't even think about it and eat here.

The feeling of family is far and few inbetween when you’re traveling. Having arrived in Keystone too early to check into my hotel, I decided to rummage the town and see what gems I could find. Walking into Halley’s West I was greeted with a warm smile, the aroma of fine cuisine, and promise to come. The bison burger was hot, fresh, and full of flavor, complimented by the delectable fries. In order to quench my thirst, it was only right that I got my hands on a flight of beer. A kind young man from the back, Grayson helped me pick which ones would best suit me. We talked about our lives, families, goals and all. He made me feel right at home. When you leave home you get homesick, but when I leave South Dakota I’ll get sick from missing Halley’s West!

Great hole in the wall burger shop. The $5 upgrade to bison burgers makes for a very expensive burger ($21 I believe), that I'm not entirely sold on the value. I had the mushroom, sauteed onion and bacon burger which is my all time favorite combo and I thought it was delicious. The ice cream flight seems a little pricey for what you get. The root beer on tap is fantastic.

Really fun little spot to eat with free parking. The 1919 Root Beer was delicious.... actually everything was amazing. Owner was helpful. We are on the patio. I'd go again.

We haven’t experienced service and hospitality like this in a long time. No regrets at all. The food was delicious, the owner or manager offered numerous tastes of beers and wines. Super attentive the entire time. The food was great. Terrific burger and hand cut fries!

Carvers' Café is a sprawling counter-serve restaurant that offers a variety of American dishes, including pizzas, burgers, and mains. It provides stunning views of Mt. Rushmore and has ample space for dining. The food options are plentiful and fresh, with gluten-free options available. Visitors can enjoy delicious desserts, particularly the buttery vanilla ice cream brought over from France by Thomas Jefferson.
I believe this might be my fourth visit over my lifetime to Mount Rushmore and it never gets old. This was our first time to eat at Carvers Cafe. My wife and I had the pot roast dinner for only $11. It was delicious and did not disappoint.

Cafe that's located near the Mount Rushmore national monument. There's plenty of seating here. There's two different counters - one serves ice cream, the other serves actual food. The service was okay, not bad. Food came out on a tray, as if you're at school. The taste was pretty good, but it wasn't amazing. The biggest standout was that the room was really breezy - there were fans going on full blast that were constantly blowing away my napkins.

Crispy Chicken Sandwich was made much better by adding bacon and cheese. Was surprised the cheese was cheddar and not an American single. Chicken had a nice crispy exterior and wasn't overcooked. Hot Dog was okay and the finely minced red onion took it up a notch. French Fries were a bit soggy and limp. Fantastic view of Mt. Rushmore.

On a trip of 10 days to several states, many towns, and a few cities, this was my favorite burger and fries. And ice cream. Take time to appreciate the setting from scenes in North by Northwest. It puts you right there. The food options here are plentiful and fresh. I had no problems needing gluten free. Don't pass up on dessert. The ice cream is so good. We got the vanilla (original recipe brought over from France by Thomas Jefferson). It's so buttery! Servings aren't stingy so you may want to consider sharing.

We stopped into the food court to get a snack to hold us till dinner. We wound up in the ice cream section. The ice cream was served up quickly by staff who seemed like they didn't mind being there doing their job. It was kind of refreshing. They did a good job and my hats off to them. It cost us $12 for two cups of ice cream. Definitely not cheap. But we've had worse. So it wasn't so bad considering where we were. We sat in the main food court where there were different options for food. They had some employees who obviously had issues that they work through and work productively and with such great attitudes. It made my day speaking with one of them and signing his list of where folks were from. I watched as some of these nice folks worked before I got the opportunity to meet them. I was impressed how well they performed their tasks. It made my day to meet such wonderful people. So that ice cream turned out to be much more enjoyable than it was suppose to be. Anyway, the cafe' had restrooms and such that folks may need. It really was a nice place to take a break and have a snack. It's very convenient for folks visiting Mount Rushmore.

We loved our break here after walking around and taking photos. The place to eat has a lot of space, which is really nice good there are a lot of people. The place is nice and clean as well. I loved the ice cream and the food that we ordered. I'd probably order that very same ice cream when we go back here.

Great place to eat while visiting the monument. When the weather is nice you can eat outside on patio with great views of Mount rushmore. Food wasn't too pricey and it was good. Had eggs, biscuit and gravy, and potatoes.

Soup and chili was good, Buffalo Burger/ Chicken sandwiches were ok, and the Thomas Jefferson Vanilla icecream was amazing, which gave it an extra star. Prices were highly inflated but not as bad as it could be literally in the Mount Rushmore Monument. Line was literally out the door.

Nestled in the serene Black Hills woods, just a short distance from Mount Rushmore, Powder House Lodge offers charming wood cabins and a renowned restaurant serving Midwest prime ribs and buffalo entrees. The seasonal motel features rustic rooms with modern amenities, while upgraded cabins offer fully equipped kitchenettes and covered porches. Guests can also enjoy a heated outdoor pool, playground, and a cozy atmosphere for fine dining and spirits at the on-site restaurant.
This review is for the restaurant. Friendly service and very delicious food. I had the prime rib which was tender and tasted good enough that I would like to return to enjoy again. I also liked that I could upgrade my salad to the Apple Gorgonzola, very good. My husband enjoyed the Buffalo Filet and was pleased with the flavor and cook. My daughter had the Powder House Steak and would recommended. My 8 year old ordered the Pizza off of the kid’s menu which is made with their homemade bread.

We stopped in for the restaurant because we heard it was good. It most certainly did not disappoint! We went in on a Friday night and they were busy but only a 20 min wait. The waiter was sociable and attentive. The food was fantastic. I had a Cajun Walleye and the Mrs had a bacon wrapped trout. I highly suggest you give the place a try and get there early because the parking can be a bit tricky.

We dined for dinner in the restaurant. We are local to Rapid City and come here at least twice a year. The food is excellent! We enjoy the porterhouse steak, elk medallions, powder house steak, and tortellini. Our kids enjoy the chicken tenders and pizza from the kids menu. The staff is friendly and attentive.

Loved our cabin, I was looking for something not cabin like since we live in mountains of Colorado. But loved it - our doggies felt comfortable. Our evening meal was the best steak we’ve ever had. Had my birthday meal in Estes Park the week before this was far better than half the price. Breakfast was great also!!

Great lodging and restaurant, we definitely enjoyed our stay! We ate breakfast here twice, with great food and service. The location is convenient for nearby Black Hills attractions and very close to the highway for quick access. If you want more of a remote/quiet location for lodging this would not be for you, but it worked out perfectly for our intinerary.

Best place to eat near Keystone. We picked up dinner there two evenings in a row and it was good both times. Easy online ordering and food is ready when you arrive. Orders were always correct and they included all the condiments you may need. Only thing is the parking is difficult if you’re in a large vehicle, such as a pickup truck, because they are so busy and the parking lot is not very big.
Cheryl — Google review
We stayed the night, eating dinner and breakfast here. Our servers were friendly and attentive. The food was good. Beds were very comfortable. Bathroom and room was very clean. We stayed on the lower level of a building right off Route 16 but didn’t hear any road noise. I didn’t realize we weren’t getting a cabin and that it was like a motel room, but my reservation does say “room” and not “cabin.” So that was just me not reading carefully. The room was perfectly fine and I would stay here again.

Located in Keystone, South Dakota, Big Thunder Gold Mine is a fascinating attraction that offers guided tours of an original gold mine from 1895. Visitors can immerse themselves in the history of the area and enjoy gold and gem panning activities. The site also features a National Presidential Wax Museum with over 100 lifelike wax sculptures of famous personalities, including all presidents. Additionally, visitors can camp near the Mount Rushmore National Memorial at Horse Thief Lake.
Great adventure! Staff was awesome. There were 3 groups we lasted till the end after everyone left. The staff Ben and Robert were awesome when it was just us. They made it like it was a family with them! It's a must try Ps we did end up with 10 gold flakes and a bunch of garnet!
Jared F — Google review
Fun and fast. If you're on the 1880 train or just don't have a ton of time this is perfect. The tour is about an hour and panning for gold can take 10-20 mins. The staff was very nice and took a few pics for us. The store has reasonably price trinkets and interesting stones. The restaurant/ bar had local beers in 16 Oz. cans for $5.50 and fair selection of food. They are about a 15 min walk from the train station and there is a historic walk on the way with numbered informational signs. I would definitely go here again!

Fascinating History and a Unique Look Underground Big Thunder Gold Mine offers a really cool glimpse into South Dakota’s mining history. Touring the actual mine and learning about the sheer effort it took to carve it out by hand was genuinely impressive. The hour-long tour was packed with interesting stories and old mining techniques—definitely a highlight for history buffs or curious travelers. We skipped the gold panning section, which seemed a bit touristy, especially for adults. But if you're bringing kids, they might enjoy it. Our tour guide was engaging and knowledgeable, though he veered into some odd conspiracy theories that felt a little out of place. It didn’t ruin the experience, but it was unexpected and a bit awkward at times. Pro tip: check Groupon before you go—there’s a huge discount available that makes the visit much more affordable.
Will B — Google review
This was a perfect family activity on a hot day. It was worth it to do the tour and gold panning. Our family had Mike as our tour guide. He was patient and knowledgeable. We enjoyed the tour with him taking time to answer questions as we went through and pointing out different rock types so we could help identify along the way too. If you have children doing the gold panning, it takes a lot of patience. It is best to get less bowls so that you can help with the experience. You will find some flakes of gold. Pay attention closely to the demo after your tour to help with how to do the gold panning. This was a highlight to our vacation.
Michelle M — Google review
Fascinating piece of history! You can visit inside the mine, pan for gold, and the gift shop has local gems and goodies. The staff was very knowledgeable about just about any question I could ask. The owner, Sandy, is so very pleasant! You can see Mount Rushmore from the front entrance, which is also cool.
Amy S — Google review
The tour was really done. Mike did a wonderful job of keeping the tour moving and interactive for everyone! At first, I was worried that it was going to be a money grab or tourist trap. But, Big Thunder Gold Mine is the furthest thing from it! Cameron spent the time teaching everyone of all ages and skill levels on how to pan for gold. Seeing the excitement in my child's eyes when he found a few pieces of gold, he was excited. Thank you for making real memories and real excitement about learning history through action!
Dave E — Google review
Awesome experience and very knowledgeable guides. The history piece behind this specific mine and mining industry of 1800s will leave you speechless with your jaw on the floor… it also explains a lot about various pollutions and the term “gold rush.” Kids and adults will enjoy panning for gold and other activities available in the close vicinity. Would recommend visiting! If Joe is avail to guide your tour, would highly recommend!

1880 Train - Keystone Depot

Heritage railroad
Historical landmark
Step back in time and experience the charm of the 1880 Train - Keystone Depot, a family-friendly attraction offering scenic railway tours through the picturesque Black Hills on historic steam trains. The three-hour round-trip ride from Keystone to Hill City and back provides breathtaking views of the natural habitat and wildlife in the area. While onboard, you can indulge in snacks like nachos, pretzels, pizza, and sweet treats at their High-Liner Snack Shoppe.
The train ride was awesome. The staff on the train were also awesome. The stories they told along the way were very informative. It was just an awesome train ride. Very relaxing. Very educating. We would highly recommend it.
Terry P — Google review
This was a neat ride from point A (Keystone) to point B (Hills City). We did a one-way trip, but I believe you can also have a round trip. I have been to plemty of historic railroads. I did like this one, but I did feel the history could have been explained in more detail, but I realize it is hard to fit that in. The scenery is beautiful, though we went in the fog, so we missed a bit here and there. If you like train rides, this is a nice hour long ride. It's not exactly my thing for that long, but the ride filled its purpose, so I feel it deserves 5 stars. They sell popcorn and drinks on the cars, which makes the journey better, and there are gift shops on both ends with merchandise. The train was very popular and crowded, so I suggest buying tickets early so you won't have to wait too long. There are assigned seats on the tickets.
Adam P — Google review
What a lot of fun. Great old train, rolling slowly through the woods from Keystone to Hill City and back. Comfortable seats, friendly & accommodating crew. The very informative narration was a mixture of prerecorded and live. Seating is reserved, and seats must be chosen when you make your reservations. Very easy on the website. You do have to wait for the train to arrive at the station, so how long you wait is up to you. Since your seats are reserved, there is no need to rush. We were there in late September, and we were originating in Keystone, so there was only one round trip available to us, and the layover in Hill City was only 10 minutes, which didn't give us the chance to get off and explore, but we knew that going in, so it was okay. It is a little expensive, but it's privately owned, so that's to be expected. I'd recommend this adventure to anyone, but especially to families. The kids will love it, as will the adults and grandparents.
Don R — Google review
Was a nice ride. Couldnt hear audio narration well, could have been louder. Great family experience, my first time in a train. Fun way to see the black hills with someone else doing the driving

Great Experience for all ages. Spent the afternoon in Keystone and loved all the views and the workers, all very friendly! This is our second time. Our first time was in 2018! If you're staying in Hill City or Keystone you have to do it!

Wonderful ride, such a beautiful landscape! We did the round trip and there was a big difference between the tour guides, I learned a lot more from the tour guide on the return trip that took us from Hill City back to Keystone. We took the Orville car and the seats were comfortable and windows were easy to open and enjoy the fresh air. I suggest sitting on the opposite side of the train on the ride back so you can see both sides of the train.
Jeni C — Google review

Such a fun attraction in the Black Hills that is a blast from the past! This is a must see if you are in the Hill City or Keystone area. I’d give more than 5 stars if I could. This place is lovely. We were in Keystone for a few days and went on our last morning for coffee and breakfast. Honestly upset we didn’t go sooner during our stay. Our party ordered the chocolate muffin and ham and Swiss croissant along with vanilla lattes and they were excellent. We also left with a hoodie and a pair of sunglasses. The employees were super nice. Not only was the food and service great, but the atmosphere is so nice. And outside has a great seating area and there is a very nice playground for kids. Definitely check this place out when in town!

Stopped this morning for coffee. Got a cold brew and a strawberry banana smoothie. Average price for coffee. I’m not sure if it was the syrup or what, but I think it could have tasted better. But still good! Cute spot to stop for the family as they have foosball, giant chess and a swing set to play on.

Mt Rushmore

Mountain peak
Mount Rushmore in Keystone, South Dakota offers a self-guided audio driving tour around the Black Hills. Despite some initial skepticism, visitors have been pleasantly surprised by the grandeur and detail of the monument. The site can get busy, especially during holidays, but it's worth exploring for its historical significance and picturesque surroundings.
Amazing in person. Museum has a lot of information and unusual facts. Gift shop is clean and well run with quick checkout. It was busy but didn't feel crowded or rushed.
Scott T — Google review
Mt Rushmore is an iconic place that you imagine seeing your whole life. We are certainly glad we went but do not build a vacation around Mt Rushmore. We were out west for 17 days and spent 1-1|2 hours here from parking the car to driving out. It was actually half the size that I had imagined. Still it was great to see. We did go through the museum and it is amazing how these men accomplished the construction of Mt Rushmore. I hear from friends that going at night and seeing the fireworks and laser show is really cool. I am sure that it adds to the overall experience. A place to see once in your life but I wouldn't stay in a local hotel with the idea of staying for very long. God Bless America!
Bill B — Google review
In my opinion, this is a must see place. That being said, you would pretty much get to see what the place looks like and has to offer, if you watch a documentary or two. But you will miss out on the scale. Also, if you’re in the area, you should go. BTW, this is a short stop, 20-30 minutes max, unless you are participating in any event or you want to see the statues at sunrise, which I highly recommend. Parking is $10, with discounts for veterans, seniors, etc. making it $5.

This was very moving and I felt very blessed to be here. From many different angles and both in the morning and at night for the lighting and veteran tribute I was in awe.

Has been more than 30 years since my last visit here and this monument still impresses. Took the trail around this time and seen some different perspective views of the monument and history of it. There was also a heritage dance performance that showed traditional dance of the local native American women. See photos. There is a gift shop, food, rest areas, viewing sites, bathrooms, and plenty of things to take pics of. Very much worth the visit, you do have to pay for parking - active duty military free, 62 and older $5.00 all others $10.00. This gets you a ticket that's good for a year, so you can come back a few times. Have fun. Dogs, dogs are aloud in some areas but not all the way in. There is a dog area, idk about service dogs.
Everette P — Google review
Beautiful nature and the monument is more moving than I expected. There is a row of flags and plaques that indicate when each state joined the US. Parking is convenient and they have ramps to make it easy to get to the viewing area. There’s a cafeteria, ice cream shop, and gift shop as well. Definitely worth a visit! If you continue beyond the main pull off area towards Custer open space and Crazy Horse, there is another free pullout with a profile view of George Washington as shown in one of my pictures.

Mount Rushmore is a great monument. Lots of history here and a chance to get ice cream made from Thomas Jefferson’s recipe. The trail is short enough for almost anyone to walk through. It was cool to see the state flags also.

Cruizzers is a popular spot in Keystone, offering not only delicious pizza but also gigantic calzones, sub sandwiches, and chicken wings. While some find the prices a bit high, many rave about the fresh ingredients and generous cheese portions on their pan-style pizzas. The garlic cheese sticks are also highly recommended for their great cheese pull and flavorful garlic butter.
Cruizzers is one of the best, if not the best pizza place in the Black Hills/Rapid City area. Service is amazing!! Food is consistently great. The cheese sticks and spicy ranchero are a favorite in our group. Worth stopping every time you are in Keystone or whenever you just want good pizza! Owners are great people, so we love supporting this local business! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Overall, a very decent experience. Just traveling through town and decided to try this place out. Our group ordered a pepperoni, chicken bacon ranch, cheesy garlic sticks and BBQ wings. All was very good. The only thing - it was so busy, staff had difficulty keeping up I think. So could have been a tad cleaner but I get it. We wiped off our own table before sitting down and it was so rainy it was just wet all over the floor. I didn’t take stars off for that because, like I said, I get it. They were swamped. I’d recommend this place as a unique experience.

I ordered a pickup pizza after a 9 hour road trip. This pizza?? was incredible... The ratios are perfect, the crust is solid. Very generous topping portion for a destination town. I was extremely surprised with how good it was. The woman who helped me was also extremely nice and welcoming. The ranch here is solid too. Lastly, it was ready in like 6 minutes.. incredible.

We walked in and were immediately acknowledged and sat. Granted this time of year it's not too busy but our waiter was attentive, talented at the piano, and knew some interesting facts. Everyone was happy with the experience and they were surprisingly not packed like most restaurants during the rally. We definitely recommend stopping here we considered it a “hidden gem” that we came across.

Came here after reading reviews online and would have to say wish we would have stopped somewhere else. Staff was friendly but service was extremely slow for the restaurant only having one other table that already had there food. We got mozzarella sticks and onion rings, mozzarella sticks would good nothing special, onion rings were gross tasted like they were reheated in microwave. Once we tried ordering our meals they were out of several things no french fries, no Mac and cheese crazy for a family friendly restaurant to be out. Burgers were nothing special, buns were hard and dried out....

Came here on a whim with my coworkers. They have all sorts of good food. I ordered a Bleu cheese elk burger with bacon. The burger was delicious, as were the fries. The food was very filling. The service was excellent, the atmosphere was great, and the bathrooms and restaurant were clean. Worth every penny, and will definitely be coming back if I'm in the area again.

No issues here. Good food and service. Cool atmosphere. Easy to find and off the main drag. We shall return. Maybe when they have some live music. See our YouTube channel Coolest Life.

Easygoing destination dishing up Nepalese & Indian food in a woodsy interior with a patio.
We ordered the lamb curry and butter chicken. It was very good and the staff were very friendly. Their outdoor patio has a nice view too. If you've never had indian then I would recommend trying the butter chicken with naan to dip in the sauce.

Excellent Indian food!! Taste was extremely good. Lamb curry and Chicken tikka masala are a must try here.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! Establishment is roomy and clean. The waiter did an excellent job. Presentation of dishes is superb. Flavors and freshness are on point. Almost did not dine here based on recent reviews. Glad we went with our GUT feeling and decided to give them a try. Definitely will be back!
Jesse V — Google review
The food here was fantastic, a truly wonderful surprise to find this gem in Keystone, South Dakota! I grew up with an Indian mother who constantly prepared elaborate Indian feasts for large dinner parties. I was also born in London and have lived in San Francisco & New York City over the past 20 years. In other words, I know what I’m talking about! My wife and I ordered two Biryanis (lamb & mixed vegetables), Chicken Tikka Masala, Vegetable Korma and some Roti bread. The portions were extremely generous (lunch tomorrow!) and the preparations of all dishes were on point. The spices and seasoning were just perfect, especially with the lamb biryani. One great feature of this restaurant is that you can specify your spice level, with 1 being the least and 6 being the most (we ordered all dishes at either a “2” or a “3” and I’d say that “3” is perfect and for anything higher than that, you’d better know what you’re doing! I highly, highly recommend that you give this restaurant a shot, you won’t be disappointed!

It smells and tastes amazing! I've never had food from Nepal, but definitely would eat it again. It was delicious. The service was excellent. Clean environment. Highly recommend.

The owner was very polite and the service was great. The food was tasty with good spices. The heat level was very low but it was flavorful thanks to the spices.

The only restaurant open late in this area. Food was yummy! Love the mutton samosas! Briyani was tasty & had a unique flavor.

Wow!!! Authentic Indian cuisine complete with appetizers and dessert as well. Be sure to order the fresh naan bread. 5 kids and they all loved it. The lower reviews are from previous owners. Staff are all amazing! Don't leave Keystone until you've eaten here. Difficult to find as it is above Br Gr 61.

Barbecue restaurant
Red's Chicken House & BBQ is a no-frills joint located at the top of Keystone, offering delicious and tender smoked buffalo ribs that are highly recommended. The owner is known for being personable and delightful to talk with, adding to the overall dining experience. While the place may not impress with fancy decor, it makes up for it with its solid brisket sandwiches and flavorful baked beans. Visitors can also enjoy a satisfying Buffalo burger with customizable toppings served on the side.
The best lunch anywhere!! Delicious & tender smoked buffalo ribs that can’t be beat. I have trouble chewing & especially meat because of radiation therapy for cancer & these ribs we’re the most tender meat I’ve ever ate. No microwaved meat for us. Our sides were fresh & delicious , too. The owner was very personable a delight to talk with. I cannot for the life of me understand the negative reviews. If we ever get back to Rushmore again we will be stopping by Reds for lunch!!
Annie G — Google review
Abusive behavior from the owner. I was walking in with my 4 month old baby asleep in my arms; he shoves his arm into my daughter’s body pushing us out of his way as he continues to haul food from his Volkswagen. After my friend and I telling him to not do that, he begins to yell at us denying the whole thing. This place is unsafe for families and we will not be coming back.
Mazahuatl M — Google review
T to his place won’t wow you over with anything fancy and yes, it seemed overpriced but it was damn good. I had the brisket sandwich and baked beans. The brisket was solid and the baked beans had a nice kick to it. I didn’t mind overpaying for good food. I would say eating outside there and the bees were an issue, but in fairness, there seemed to be bees everywhere we went in South Dakota on this trip. This place may surprise you so try it if in Keystone.
Joseph P — Google review
We ordered Burnt Ends and Baked Beans to go. After paying higher than normal prices, we were on our way. After leaving the area, we realized our “burnt ends” was actually a sandwich. We saw other reviews similarly. The sandwich was solid and the beans above average. The pricing and communications of what we were actually ordering was problematic. Nice folks and we were treated well otherwise.
Joseph K — Google review
Buffalo ribs had a real good flavor but we did add a little BBQ sauce that was on the table. Two large ribs. Get the Baked Beans they are delicious! The Buffalo Burger had a good flavor, too. Don’t order the coleslaw. It was flavorless. Order the Baked Beans they are fabulous.
L S — Google review
It was good considering the price. I think it's kinda pricey because I mean brisket isn't cheap, right? Not only that but Buffalo meat is a delicacy for some Native American tribes. So...? 🤷🏽‍♂️ Only bad part was that the potato salad tasted like it had sour cream in it (according to my mom).
Samuel P — Google review
Terrific BBQ chicken and brisket - highly recommend getting it with a salad full of fresh veggies including snap peas, broccoli, mushrooms, carrots, etc. Meat was flavorful and smokey even without sauce. The staff were also delightful to chat with and attentive! Would definitely recommend.

Not a bad place to stop for lunch before hitting up the crowded MT. Rushmore site. They offer several types of cooked briskets, chicken and pork. Service is friendly but the seating is very cramped pushed together. I tried the brisket and the ribs and they were decent.

Definitely a fun thing to do with kids. Plan to spend 2 to 3 hours there. There's a ropes course. There's a small roller coaster that you control the speed on. That's a lot of fun. There was a a shoot em up movie that you could watch and shoot things on the screen. That was fun. There's the cave tour, and the more.
Todd D — Google review
We got the unlimited wristband for our kids, and they had a blast! The coaster was the hit for all. They also enjoyed the ropes course. Best of all, there were shaded benches and beer for the adults looking for a break. Would recommend!
Stephanie M — Google review
Plenty of sunshine and fun time today with the kids from Spearfish Summer Recreation! From Cave exploring to coaster rides and zip lines, there are plenty of activities for all ages. A must visit spot in the Black Hills National Forest. Just minutes away from historic Keystone South Dakota.
Steve W — Google review
Pros: The ride wrist bands were decently priced and we didn't have to wait long to get on the rides. We had a great tour guide through the cave. The gift shop was have a great sale! Cons: There's only 2 rides and a virtual game you can play. The mountain coaster ride is downhill so save that for last and just repeat the ride because the walkway is steep. The obstacle course was closed.
David S — Google review
Our family was just there a week ago and we experienced the cave, mountain coasters, and the rope course. The mountain coaster ride seemed very quick for the cost . It would of been nice to at least get two rides from my one ticket , then it would of been a great deal. Tour guide for the cave was very mellow and monotone, seemed like he was bored.
Austin ( — Google review
We visited the park to do a cave tour on a rainy Friday morning. We had zero line for tickets and only had to wait 15 minutes be for the next tour started. They have a gift shop or you can go outside and watch people do the coaster or eagle ride to kill the time. We had a small group for our tour, which was nice. Our guide was very informative and the tour was cool! It was our tween’s favorite experience of the day. This park isn’t in Keystone, but isn’t too far. The drive was pretty and the signage leading there was helpful since our cell service was spotty. The rest of the attractions looked fun and were still running in the rain.
Nikki B — Google review
We had a blast at Rush Mountain. We rode the rides and then decided to do the "gunslinger 7-D" shooting game. We chose the scariest one (cant recall the name) and had so much fun. We had ice cream and then went for the cave tour after. Weekday towards end of season and we didnt have to wait in ñ8ne ling for anything!
Bradie P — Google review
We had a great time! We rode the rides several times, especially the Mountain Coaster. Get the wristband so you can ride multiple times on the rides. Staff is friendly and helpful, very communicative about the ride rules and not rude at all about repeating or helping if we didn't understand. We had a great time!

The Brookside Motel

Motel
Brookside Motel is a small, simple motel with basic rooms and an outdoor heated pool. It offers free WiFi and breakfast.
This is exactly what you hope for when traveling to a vacation spot. It’s quiet, cute and honestly reminds you of the bungalows in Dirty Dancing. It’s family owned and the staff/family is an absolute joy to work with. We had a quick minor issue with the AC going out and the owner sprung into action to fix the minor issue very quickly. It’s pet friendly so make sure to bring Spot or Rex lol 🐶. The location is ideal! Walking distance to dozens of local restaurants and tourist attractions. If you’re feeling adventurous I have to recommend the helicopter sight seeing tours! It will give you a true once in a life time experience. You’ll see the rolling black hills, the national forest and not to mention Mount Rushmore! Highly recommend especially if you’re tired of the commercial hotels with basically the same amenities but double the cost. Even with Sturgis happening right around the corner they were able to book our last min reservation without hesitation.
Joshua S — Google review
Staff is very friendly & helpful. Room was clean. Bed was comfy. AC was cold. Breakfast was delicious, only thing missing was some Tabasco Sauce for the eggs. Location is great, close to everything, but far enough away that noise is not an issue. Price was reasonable, and they do give a military/veteran discount. Would definitely stay here again and recommend to friends & family.
Ben B — Google review
Best place to stay in the area for the price. We were there during Stugis and was tucked away from most of the noise but was in walking distance of everything. Short drive to Rushmore. Clean room, hot shower, friendly service. My only advice is to call to make your reservation as we booked online and they couldn’t find it but we were in luck and they had 1 room left. Definitely happy with our choice.
Michelle C — Google review
Booked through Expedia with a cheap price. The owner is super friendly and warmhearted, helped us planning the route and recommended places to see. Room has big comfortable bed, had a good night sleep. Would definitely stay again if coming back to visit the area!
Danny W — Google review
Paid $170 for a room with a non functioning deadbolt lock, half the outlets didn’t work, no fan in the bathroom, room wasn’t fully clean, bugs everywhere, and pretty sure bed bugs In the towels. The counter man offered me an upgrade for free…the upgrade was a “nicer” room which had a tv and a non functional jacuzzi (which the other room didn’t have). The bathroom looked just as bad. I didn’t test the locks or the outlets in that rooms because I just wanted a proper hotel. I tried to cheap out and oh boy, did it back fire. Definitely spend the extra $20 at another hotel. I have contacted the property manager to see if I can get a partial or full refund, however I booked through a third party website so, who knows if I’ll get my money back. Good news though, it’s like a 10 minute drive from Mount Rushmore, so that’s good.
Marc L — Google review
For the price it was a great hotel. Rooms were clean, full of towels, soap, shampoo, etc Hotel is in an excellent location. Short drive to Mt Rushmore and Custer State Park (Buffaloes). Breakfast bar was more than adequate with food choice to fit almost anyone
Andrew L — Google review
If I could give less than one star, I would. The drain in our tub/shower did not work. We showered in standing water, and it never drained, even during the night. The chairs and towels were stained, making it seem unsanitary to use them but we had no choice. The owner did not reply to my concerns, so beware. The room rate is lower than other accommodations in Keystone for a reason.
Julie M — Google review
Zero complaints. Rooms were nice and clean, staff were nice, and the location is great! My dog and I had a great time and got some well needed rest in a nice room! Thanks for letting us stay!

Art Galleries
Dahl's Chainsaw Art, located in Keystone, is a must-visit for art enthusiasts and curious travelers. Founded by the talented Dahl brothers, Jarrett and Jordan, the gallery showcases their exceptional chainsaw carvings made from local woods like Black Hills Pine. With 15 years of experience, they have gained global recognition and won numerous awards for their unique pieces.
Probably the best thing going on in Keystone. All of the work is impressive and there were a few cool pieces that were priced reasonably well. I was approached by a worker who asked if I needed assistance, so it’s customer service friendly.
Thirteendays — Google review
The art at this place is beautiful! Everyone there was willing to help and answer any questions. We all enjoyed stopping here and seeing the different items that have been made and we enjoyed talking to the artist himself! Amazing place! Highly recommend visiting!
Kendra H — Google review
Super beautiful carved pieces, really impressive. I loved the sculptures of eagles, so detailed. There's a big variety of sculptures, from big ones to small ones. Great place
Emilia T — Google review
Where Bigfoot Meets Fine Art (with a Chainsaw) Dahl’s Chainsaw Art is the kind of place you stop at “just to look” and suddenly you’re debating whether you need a 7-foot wooden eagle for your front yard. The craftsmanship is incredible, the details are wild, and the scale? Let’s just say Bigfoot himself is out front making sure you don’t miss it. There’s something for everyone here—patriotic eagles, cowboys, deer who look like they belong at a dive bar, and a throne that makes you feel like a lumberjack king. It’s quirky, impressive, and a little chaotic in the best way. Highly recommend pulling over—you’ll leave with great photos, big laughs, and maybe even a new roommate made of wood.
Jacci G — Google review
Definitely a worth stop while visiting the Mount Rushmore. What an art what a place. It’s hard to imagine how this big gigantic art is made out of wood. It is a very different experience to see these arts. You can take pictures as well. The entrance is free but donations are accepted. I would say show appreciation by stopping by it is definitely an experience you will carry with you for a very long time.
Vijay D — Google review
This was a wonderful place to visit. Chainsaw art! There was a man doing right there on site. Very beautiful pieces of work. I would recommend stopping in just to look. I think they said this is the biggest big foot.
Linda S — Google review
A great roadside shop where chainsaw art is nicely displayed and being made right on site. Honestly the prices were a bit high for me but I really enjoyed browsing. Plus I think these would make nice gifts if ya lived locally. Their bigfoot out front is wonderful , there's a donation box at the building, I think its worth a small donation.

Visitor center
The Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center is a must-visit when heading to Mount Rushmore. Inside, you'll find an exhibit hall with extensive information about the creation of the granite sculptures and a 24-minute film detailing the carving process. While there, take a short walk on the Presidential Trail and explore the display museum. Although currently undergoing renovations until May 2019, this center offers an enriching experience for visitors eager to learn about the history and significance of Mount Rushmore.
View from visitor center, as soon as you enter is the best! Still worth it to go walk the trail (0.6 miles) all the way around, see the sculptor's studio en route and get closer to the memorial. The 20 min movie they run on rotation is interesting and informative as well. Restrooms were spacious and clean. Water bottle filling station is to the side. National park is free to visit. Parking is $10, usable for whole year (enter the paid for pass when leaving). The lights and movie at 9 are preceded by a talk at the stage at the lower level, ending with flag lowering. Definitely worth coming to once, in late evening. What a marvel... 60 ft bust of Washington in only 3 years (started 1927, unveiled 1930). Jefferson took 6 years (unveiled 1936) but they had to blast off an almost complete looking work (to me), because the stone underneath wasn't workable. And only one year after that the Lincoln head - with all its skin texture, was unveiled to public (1937). Two years to finish next head of Jefferson, with the amazing detailed specs (1939). Two years to officially open beyond that. What a feat of artistry and engineering.

Just a quick update on the timings—I’ve attached a photo for your reference in case you’re planning your visit. Make sure to check it before heading out. For fellow National Park Passport collectors, stamps are available both at the Visitor Center and the Bookstore, so don’t forget your passport! Safe Travels

It was a cold/rainy day. Was nice because it kept the crowds down. Stopped by at night also
David T — Google review
This Visitor Center, in terms of the maintenance of a visitor center of this capacity in a National Monument area was impressive. There was a distinct museum that took a look at an impressive timeline of not only Mount Rushmore, but also, the backgrounds of each of the four presidents (Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt), in addition to Gustov Borglum and his son, Lincoln Borglum and their role in the construction of the Mount Rushmore historic monument and the benefactoral role of the name, as donated by Charles Rushmore. Additionally, the museum sections brings upon a hidden history of the historic monument, with an amazing history on the Mount Rushmore Memorial Baseball Team and the presidential dedication by men such as Franklin D. Roosevelt and Calvin Coolidge in the early days of the monument during construction. Additionally, there was a great gift shop that was a smaller bookstore featuring historic texts themed to each of the represented presidents. The diversity of the books allowed for authors such as David McCullough and Doris Kearns Goodwin to be fairly represented in the bookstore for all readers, both casual and interested in history and government to modestly read. Overall, if you want to start your visit with a bang at Mount Rushmore, I'd highly recommend coming here to learn about Mount Rushmore's glorious history and the people behind it.
Jason K — Google review
Phenomenal feat of engineering and one wonders how the sculptor Gutzon Borglum pulled it off! Truly inspiring and thoroughly worthwhile driving 9 hours to see! At night the faces that are lit up are in stark contrast to the darkness of night.
Janet A — Google review
The visitor center is located all the way down the stairs if you just continue straight down the main area (past the state flags) when you get there (down below). It's worth a stop. Parts under construction though. Good timeline history exhibit. Cool explanations and examples of tools used to build it. Video not playing here at the moment, but up at the cafe. No extra charge.

Great visitor center with a ton of gifts and helpful staff. Also restrooms. The museum is also close by and recommended for a history of the construction.

Peggy's Place is a small family restaurant in a hole in the wall near the shopping district. The food is good, and they offer comfort foods like chicken fried steak, patty melts and bread pudding. They're also known for their cinnamon rolls, which are some of the best around. They only take cash, so be prepared!
This is a small hometown cafe nestled in the Black Hills. When you walk in, you feel at home. I'm sure everyone is a tourist, but they are friendly. The food is really good. Don't expect anything fancy, but it's worth the price. The biscuits are great! Our server was very funny and you could tell he loved his job. He also told us a little about Keystone.

The food was good here, BUT when I asked for sourdough toast, she said they didn't have that, but they had rye, and I said ok, that would be good. Long story short, they charged me 2.99 for rye toast! No reply from the guy who rang us out when I said the waitress never mentioned an extra charge for Rye and who in the heck charges 2.99 for Rye toast? I should have put my foot down, but I was on vacation and didn't want to argue on that. I won't ever go there again. But they wouldn't care anyway as it mostly tourists and they don't care, it seems. Shameful

We stopped because it was an easy spot to pull in at Keystone to eat and not have to fight with parking downtown. The food was really good and the staff was friendly. It did take about 35 min to get our food, but we weren't in a huge hurry. Definitely loved dipping my hubby's ff in the honey mustard dressing from my salad. Limited hours right now. Closed at 2.

OMG. I can't say enough about this place. The staff was really attentive and friendly. The food was fantastic. Definitely home made. The cinnamon rolls were amazing. The Chicken fried steak was one of the best I have had. The pancakes and french toast was some of the best we have had. Nothing we had was average or bad. Let's start with the signs. I won't lie: I lean left. That said, I don't feel the need to throw my politics out everywhere, especially on a sign before you enter as well as a sign by the cash register. You say at the bottom of the sign inside to "be respectful" - that's a two-way street. You should respect your customers diverse views. That's all I will say, but it is the reason for the poor atmosphere score. The food was great. The homemade biscuits were delicious, even though by the time we got there they had run out of gravy for biscuits and gravy. My daughter had the massive cinnamon roll, which was fluffy like white bread. The eggs and ham were good. Overall, food was great. The service too was friendly and paid attention to their guests. They didn't have any politics to espouse on us, it was just friendly discussion and good food. In short: your politics suck, your food and service was good.

I was hesitant to try Barlee's after reading a few reviews but I wanted to try it for myself. I went mid afternoon and there were a few groups eating on the outdoor patio. I ordered the Reuben and fries and it was very good. It was a little slow to arrive (25 minutes) considering the time of day and that I only ordered a sandwich but I want in a hurry and i really enjoyed the food when it arrived. The bartender/waiter was polite and attentive.

I am a pescatarian and am traveling through the midwest, so my options are relatively limited. I ordered a black bean burger that was not very good. It was very doughy and lacked flavor. However, my husband is a meat eater and tried the BBQ chicken. He rated this chicken in his top favorite ever (for you meat eaters out there). He also ordered a buffalo burger and loved it. Hope this helps you on your food hunt! P.S. I have a feeling they make good bloody mary's here, although I didn't try one.

Great food - Bad service We chose this restaurant, among many others in Keystone, because of the huge smoker outside. Here you will find some very well-cooked and smoked bbq ribs.. The food tasted so good! But what lack of service. We ordered appetizers and main course. After a long wait, finally some of us (3 persons in total) got the main course, but the waiter had totally forgot our appetizers. Had to call her again for forks and knives. To be honest, she did a good job trying to serve us, but she where clearly stressed. She took the time talking to us, which defiantly made us relax and calm. We gave her a huge tip for her engagement despite the situation. Even the waiters were running around in the kitchen?! I think the problem is higher up in the hierarchy. The employees did all they could trying to put out fires. Can't remember our waiters name, but we did told her that she did a good job. We were there, 3 guys, late night august 31, 2018.

The place is great! You can smell the pulled pork smoke outside. Great menu, delicious food! Their drinks, AMAZING! WONDERFUL VIEW!

This place is cool, the only resto and bar at keystone that closes late night. Food is great! . and they have customers all over the world-including us from Philippines.. They have a map where you pin from which country you come from... and for their souvenirs.. you can leave a dollar with your name on it and stick to their wall full of dollars!!

Don't enter at the bar if you are eating there. Go upstairs. Slow service. Burned potato skins with mostly skin. Half the menu is marked out with black marker. Women's bathroom needs a good cleaning. I question the rest of the restaurant. I should not have to ask for a plate for my appetizers and a glass for my beer but I did!! 👎

It’s so great to see a regular, local, western style pub. Kinda place that sure makes you appreciate not being in some other places... or no place at all! Welcome to the West and good to see some left, just yet! Cheers BaRLee’s!

Specialty pies & hot subs fixed up in simple, enduring digs with beer on tap & many bottled options.
Down here during Sturgis and wanted some pizza while in Keystone; several places to choose from so we decided on Eno's. It's a small place, but great atmosphere/service/pizza. This is some of the best pizza we have had in quite a while. We highly recommend!
Teresa J — Google review
It is no longer Eno's. It is now Ranger Danger pizza. All they have is pizza, many by the same name as Eno's. No salad, no calzones...pizza, which is fine as that's what the name indicates. Because it's in a tourist trap areat's ridiculously priced. Two sodas and a medium veggie pizza was around $30. They do not have fountain drinks. You can get a fountain root beer for $6 plus $3 per refill. I did give the H-1B employee a decent tip despite him not really having to do anything. The pizza was okay, nothing special. I really did like the crust though. There are a bunch of pizza places in the small area and next time, I'll try another one. If nothing else, for some other options on the menu.

We had dinner at Eno's Pizza since it was close to our motel. We stopped for the night and Eno's was our choice for dinner. They were different since they had a limited menu on a tv screen. You order and pay up front. If you use a credit card, they ask for a tip up front. I told him I don't care for that, so he nicely said, put down zero and do it how it makes you happy. So I did. We ordered the pizza and one 20oz bottle of soda. The wife and I shared the soda since neither of us drink much soda. Our server/counter guy brought us two glasses with ice without our asking him. Then he brought out plates and silverware, a roll of paper towels in a holder for napkins, and some Parmesan cheese for our pizza. He did a great job while tending to the counter and then other customers. The pizza was pretty good as well. No it's far from the best pizza we've had back east. But it was pretty good. While eating, another table had finished and gone. I watched our server really clean both tables that were put together, as well as the seats and such. I rarely have seen such a work ethic and cleanliness. I liked this little place more and more as we sat there. When we were finished, he began cleaning our table after asking us permission. But he wasn't chasing us out. We sat for a few minutes since there were plenty of tables available. But we didn't want to hold the table, so we finished and went on our way. But not until leaving a much better tip in cash than I would have if I had to tip up front on the credit card. This pizzeria is different from a lot of conventional ways. But it works for them. Maybe give them a try if your near by and looking for something to eat.
Sponge B — Google review
We got a medium calazone pizza. This comes with three topping. I will tell you what, this was basically bread and cheese. A medium bearly fed us. We got a sprinkle of toppings and a drip of sauce. No flavor pizza. We were too hungry to back in there and say something and then no one including the staff was wearing masks. The place didn't look very clean. The older lady that took our order seemed impatient with me even though there was no line and the other family that was in there dining was done eating. The food was done on time. I choose to eat in my car instead because it just was not welcoming and I didn't want to take a chance. Everyone had to touch the same condiments on the counter at the desk if they wanted parmesan or anything else. I would not recommend it at all. To be honest I think I am being extremely gracious giving it two stars. I should only give it one. If you find this review helpful please give it a thumbs up. Thank you.
Miss — Google review
The personal pizza is served very warm and very cheesy. If you're used to thin pizzas, the personal pizza will contain more than enough cheese for you. In addition to that, the sauce is amazing, and the crust is very crunchy. If you're considering getting a brownie, get one. They are homemade and delicious. Note: the restaurant closes after Labor Day until April, when tourist season starts.
Willie I — Google review
Coloradoans - I said it was better than Beau-Jos. It may have been because of how hungry I was, but none the less, the pizza is good. Everyone else - I would highly suggest going. The crust was great, the pizza itself was amazing. You can order pitchers of beer and drinks. The staff was always present if we needed something. We had the carnivore and the chipotle BBQ, and it was devine. 7-people, 2 larges filled us up, we didn't have to order the 2nd pizza, but it was so good, we wanted too. 10/10 great experience!
Chryssy B — Google review
Delicious! I read reviews before coming here and saw that most of the negative ones were not about the food, but rather the commenters’ own stupidity for assuming a small pizza shop in a tourist town could accommodate unrealistic expectations, so my fiancé and I decided to give it a try. The staff was attentive and pleasant. The pizza (sausage and pepperoni) was of the better pizza I have had. Crust was average thickness and tasty, toppings and cheese were cooked perfectly. I’m glad I cheated on my diet today and gave Eno’s a try! Thank you for the pleasant experience!
Erica S — Google review
Absolutely amazing pizza. Super thick and fluffy while managing a perfect balance of sauce, cheese, and toppings. Our server was a younger gentlemen who was very polite and managed the busy night-time rush very well all alone in there and we had our pizza within 12-15 minutes piping hot. 10/10 recommend!!

Sculptor's Studio offers a fascinating view of the model used for Mount Rushmore. Visitors can stand in front of it to see the faces through the top window perfectly. The staff is knowledgeable and provides informative talks about the monument's history, including details like Jefferson's crack on his cheek and Lincoln's left ear. The studio also features historical photos of the monument in progress, making it an educational experience for all visitors.
I highly recommend the presidential trail to get up close to the monument

What an experience to sit were the original creators and sculptors envisioned the masterpiece they created. Truly amazing to walk the trails and learn so much. The kids had a great time here. I would definitely recommend going to see the night time ceremony.

A fantastic place to see and hear about our country! We had hand held tour devices. We were there for hours. Don't miss it!

Looks super cool through the windows but it’s only open 8-6 and we arrived early to beat the crowds so we missed it. I did not see a stroller friendly path to this but there may be omen

So cool! The little gift shop had friendly employees too.
Candi I — Google review
Was a fun walk to the studio. Upon arriving we caught the ranger giving a talk which was very informative. They also had some historical photos of the monument in progress. One of the most interesting was Jefferson on the opposite side as the current carving.

Very awesome view of the model used for Mount Rushmore. If you stand in front of it just right, you can see the faces out of top window perfectly. Staff were awesome and very knowledgeable. My family loved the whole experience ! How to return again someday and spend a little more time after Covid is under control better. Thank you for an unforgettable experience !

Scenic spot
Very cool turn off to see the side profile of Washington's carving of Mt. Rushmore. There is ample parking and spots to see this little hidden Gen! Just be careful of traffic as you pull back out into traffic which can get heavy at times. If your already at the monument anyway this is a great spot to check out.
Joe L — Google review
I don't have much to add as others have said it all. This is a great quick stop on your way to the monument. There's a pull off spot with tons of parking. If it's your first time to the area, as it was mine, seeing the profile was breathtaking. It's something that you must see for yourself.
Aleta D — Google review
There is a small parking area on the west side of the Peter Norbeck Scenic Highway where you can pull over for a great profile view of Washington at Mount Rushmore. Keep alert as drivers tend to pull off on the shoulders on both sides of the road to take photos.
Dawn J — Google review
A great quick stop off, certainly worth the drive when you are in the area. Gives a great and different perspective to a single head on Mount Rushmore. You only need 5 minutes.
David T — Google review
Has parking on one side of the road.....it is two direction parking. Just a profile of Pres Washington. Still a nice shot.
Scott S — Google review
Cool view of George Washington! Easy pulloff from the road also
Brandon D — Google review
Underwhelming unfortunately. Expected it to be bigger (I’m sure many can relate to this in many ways 🤣). Snapped a photo from the road, did a U-turn, and left. No point in paying to get a little closer.
Jean-Luc H — Google review
Great pull off to stop for profile pics! Easy access and very good view, I recommend a quick stop there to enjoy the last glance of Mount Rushmore before heading out to needles Highway.

Portrait studio
Goodtyme Photo is a portrait studio where customers can dress up in old-fashioned clothes and pose for photographs. The staff are friendly and happy, and they are able to give good suggestions about poses. The prices are reasonable, and the studio is quick, efficient and attractive. It is great for making memories with friends from different countries.
We got here too close to closing time on Sunday. Easily scheduled a time for a few days later that we would be free for. We got there early and they were very accommodating. They worked well with our toddler and made the while experience so much fun. Highly recommend!!!
Ryann P — Google review
We were there in off season so got in right away. We got to choose from many different poses and offered us choices on our outfit (some places don't do that). It's always fun to dress up. Prices are expensive as was expected. Cute little place!
Susan C — Google review
Very friendly women running the shop! Professional and had a lot of "scene" options for you to pick from. She had a good eye for positioning and was very fun to work with. We loved the flash drive option to keep all of the photos!
Kimberly N — Google review
We try to stop every couple years. This year we had a family reunion and wanted to do a family picture. The manager (owner?) came in on her day off to make sure the whole group was efficiently dressed and photos taken with ease.

I brought my teen daughter's here and they absolutely loved the experience they giggled like toddlers playing dress up. Staff were great efficient and professional. Highly recommend!

My fiance and I wanted to have some fun pictures done and really enjoyed our experience, Callie was so fun to work with! She had tons of creative ideas for outfits and settings m, we had a blast! The prices were decent and the staff overall was super friendly. If you're in the area and want to have some fun pictures taken I'd definitely recommend this place!

Holy Terror Mini Golf

Miniature golf course
Nestled in the picturesque Black Hills Region, Holy Terror Mini Golf offers a fun and challenging 18-hole course named after Keystone's last active gold mine. The course features diverse terrain with steep hills, boulders, water wheels, and streams. Families can enjoy old-fashioned fun while putting around the scenic pine-laden slope.
What a fun way to spend a bit of time while visiting the Keystone area. Challenging course for sure but still a good time. Could do with a little clean up of the plants around the course as some of them were crowding the plating areas. Overall though such a cute place!
Megan C — Google review
Really terrible course for kids. If your a Pro, you can try it. The course has 4 impossible holes where the are so bulged or slanted you literally cannot make it. Everyone maxes out on all of these holes. Very frustrating and poorly designed. It is, however, a really cool looking course if your not keeping score. 2 stars for looks. Don't come here if you keep score.
Nathan M — Google review
A beautiful location and fairly fun course, but Terror it was. Up hill with punishing shots, but several of the holes just dump your ball no matter where you shoot and its not fun for the littles. I wish a few of the holes would be reworked to not just force you to pick up your ball and walk off.
Ben P — Google review
Very nice atmosphere, especially for kids even during Sturgis! Some of the holes didn’t give much of a chance to get a hole in one, but overall very beautiful and welcoming.
Jacob M — Google review
First - you had to go into another building across the parking lot to pay and get your club and ball. Second - the holes are terrible. They are all clean but you may get discouraged because a lot of them are on a slope so it makes it more challenging. This isn't great if you are trying to enjoy a family outing with your kids.
Sharon B — Google review
No idea why the reviews are so low? Course is in great shape and very challenging! My wife and I had a great time and no we didn't get a hole in one but we enjoyed challenging ourselves and when we didn't get it in we laughed it off. Only reason it got 4/5 instead of 5 is almost $30 for the 2 of us seemed a bit high.
Liam M — Google review
Do not waste your money. All the decent reviews are from "local guides" most of the holes are so tilted, if you dont make it in on the first shot, you will max out. Some holes you can't even set the ball down to start putting without stepping on it to get it to stay still. Mutiple holes just dump all the balls up against the wall in the same spot. By far, the worst putt putt we have ever been to.
Jacob V — Google review
Several holes on the back nine are at an angle, so you can’t even keep your ball away from the edging. You’re basically pushing your ball, and it just rolls back against the edge if you don’t make it. It was fun until then, but irritating enough on those holes that I wouldn’t go back.

Fast food restaurant
Ice cream shop
Dairy Queen Grill & Chill is a quick-service restaurant that specializes in burgers and fries. It has a small shop with limited seating, and service is quick and friendly.
Small location with limited menu choices! They normally run a special of 2 Cheeseburgers for $5! They're consistent with the taste of other DQ locations! There was a language barrier when ordering, which made it difficult to get the right food! We had to send all the sandwiches back to be remade! The employees were friendly, and the facility was clean inside and out! It's attached to other businesses to walk freely within while waiting on your food! It gets extremely busy, and seats are rarely available, so grab a table ASAP! Parking was plentiful for us, but i can see where it may be a challenge during busy times! The food was quick to be prepared as we were on the go!
RedBullKC — Google review
Not a very good DQ. We just had blizzards, but the ice cream was runny and didnt taste like other DQ's. The butterfinger one was soggy and the prices are higher and with less ice cream. The workers were nice tho.
Susan C — Google review
Management is horrible!!! Paying this kids nothing and want this place to be top notch . Place had no chocolate ice cream, portions of fries was laughable! Also only one table outside and thats it . None inside
Legend K — Google review
Went there yesterday at 1245pm. Ordered a meal and the crew mismanaged the order, giving it away to another customer. The crew took 35 min to make a new order offering a feee ice cream as an apology.

Although it was posted that they don't do special requests on orders, since they weren't too busy they were willing to honor requests like No Pickle. Blizzard was soft, would not pass the flip test. Staff was nice.

Amazing service! Was greeted by a gentleman named Carlos upon arrival. Ordered a blue raspberry mister misty FREEZE (something I’ve been ordering at DQ since I was a little girl) I was trying to explain it to Carlos, as I found out it is not a menu item, and he was kindly trying to process my requested order. A gentleman came (assuming) manager? And knew what I was talking about, kindly explained it to Carlos and joked to me that anybody under 30 years of age will probably not know what I am trying to order! ;) He proceeded to take my order and even used it as a training opportunity for Carlos and the rest of the team! Very satisfied and honestly taken back by the extreme the kindness, team work, customer service, and overall vibe of this location! Thank you
