Located in Keystone, South Dakota, Big Thunder Gold Mine is a fascinating attraction that offers guided tours of an original gold mine from 1895. Visitors can immerse themselves in the history of the area and enjoy gold and gem panning activities. The site also features a National Presidential Wax Museum with over 100 lifelike wax sculptures of famous personalities, including all presidents. Additionally, visitors can camp near the Mount Rushmore National Memorial at Horse Thief Lake.
Great adventure! Staff was awesome. There were 3 groups we lasted till the end after everyone left. The staff Ben and Robert were awesome when it was just us. They made it like it was a family with them! It's a must try Ps we did end up with 10 gold flakes and a bunch of garnet!
Jared F — Google review
Fun and fast. If you're on the 1880 train or just don't have a ton of time this is perfect. The tour is about an hour and panning for gold can take 10-20 mins. The staff was very nice and took a few pics for us. The store has reasonably price trinkets and interesting stones. The restaurant/ bar had local beers in 16 Oz. cans for $5.50 and fair selection of food. They are about a 15 min walk from the train station and there is a historic walk on the way with numbered informational signs. I would definitely go here again!

Fascinating History and a Unique Look Underground Big Thunder Gold Mine offers a really cool glimpse into South Dakota’s mining history. Touring the actual mine and learning about the sheer effort it took to carve it out by hand was genuinely impressive. The hour-long tour was packed with interesting stories and old mining techniques—definitely a highlight for history buffs or curious travelers. We skipped the gold panning section, which seemed a bit touristy, especially for adults. But if you're bringing kids, they might enjoy it. Our tour guide was engaging and knowledgeable, though he veered into some odd conspiracy theories that felt a little out of place. It didn’t ruin the experience, but it was unexpected and a bit awkward at times. Pro tip: check Groupon before you go—there’s a huge discount available that makes the visit much more affordable.
Will B — Google review
This was a perfect family activity on a hot day. It was worth it to do the tour and gold panning. Our family had Mike as our tour guide. He was patient and knowledgeable. We enjoyed the tour with him taking time to answer questions as we went through and pointing out different rock types so we could help identify along the way too. If you have children doing the gold panning, it takes a lot of patience. It is best to get less bowls so that you can help with the experience. You will find some flakes of gold. Pay attention closely to the demo after your tour to help with how to do the gold panning. This was a highlight to our vacation.
Michelle M — Google review
Fascinating piece of history! You can visit inside the mine, pan for gold, and the gift shop has local gems and goodies. The staff was very knowledgeable about just about any question I could ask. The owner, Sandy, is so very pleasant! You can see Mount Rushmore from the front entrance, which is also cool.
Amy S — Google review
The tour was really done. Mike did a wonderful job of keeping the tour moving and interactive for everyone! At first, I was worried that it was going to be a money grab or tourist trap. But, Big Thunder Gold Mine is the furthest thing from it! Cameron spent the time teaching everyone of all ages and skill levels on how to pan for gold. Seeing the excitement in my child's eyes when he found a few pieces of gold, he was excited. Thank you for making real memories and real excitement about learning history through action!
Dave E — Google review
Awesome experience and very knowledgeable guides. The history piece behind this specific mine and mining industry of 1800s will leave you speechless with your jaw on the floor… it also explains a lot about various pollutions and the term “gold rush.” Kids and adults will enjoy panning for gold and other activities available in the close vicinity. Would recommend visiting! If Joe is avail to guide your tour, would highly recommend!
Alexander K — Google review
Fun place to visit and learn some area history. Our guide was entertaining, but some facts inaccurate. Be prepared, it’s very cold on the tour. Panning for gold was fun, but hard work!

The National Presidential Wax Museum, situated near Mount Rushmore in Keystone, South Dakota, is a must-visit attraction for history enthusiasts. Created by renowned wax artist Katherine Stubergh, the museum showcases over 100 lifelike wax sculptures of iconic American figures. Visitors can witness pivotal moments in U.S. presidential history through these meticulously crafted replicas. It's an educational and patriotic experience suitable for the entire family.
We stopped here our first day in SD b/c it was raining. Great experience! We spent three hours in here! Each exhibit has an audio companion that you carry on a device. The reality of the figures was awesome. What makes this place unique is that the displays are not just the figures. They actually have historical moments recreated. Ex: Kennedy with John Jr., GWB with the NYFD firefighter at Ground Zero, Reagan with Gorbachev, and George Washington with Martha and Betsy Ross admiring the flag! Cameos by Thomas Edison, Winston Churchill, Al Gore, and many more. The bargain for this place is incredible.
Joe R — Google review
Wax figures are meticulously crafted and many of them have high degree of realism. Comparing to Madame Tussaud’s wax museum I would say the similarity there is way more accurate compared to here, but this did not affect our experience drastically. What I truly enjoyed is the amount of exhibits and the ability to spend time inside the museum while listening to historical events on a provided device. Would certainly recommend visiting this place for anyone who travels to see Mt Rushmore!
Alexander K — Google review
Went almost immediately after me & my mom went to Mt. Rushmore! Very historically accurate and a very good representation of all of the U.S. presidents! The price wasn't actually that bad, I'd 100% recommend going if you're in Keystone!
Test — Google review
It was fun to see all the wax figures, including those that were not Presidents. The only thing stopping a 5 star review - a few of the figures didn't accurately represent the President (in my opinion) and the audio for each station was a hit long.
Ryan S — Google review
This is a nice stop after Mt. Rushmore and would be especially educational for older children. Most of the figures are well done, however a few do not appear to have as accurate resemblance. Some of the settings also seem dated and need a refresher.
Sharon M — Google review
The person working the cash register was just clueless when I asked couple of basic questions about the museum but I guess that's to be expected these days,it seems the most people seem to be clueless unless they look up the info on their phone.
Steve K — Google review
This place its 100% recommender if you like history. Is awesome. You have to stop by.

So much to do! We had a blast. All the staff were excellent - friendly and knowledgeable on each activity. We did the sled, tube slides, eagle thing, jump, rope course thing, and 800 foot zipline - all was great! My 7 and 11 year olds loved it all.
Kie H — Google review
This was a fun experience. We’ve been to the Black Hills several times and we were looking for something different. 4 people in our group, 2 did the zip line and the other 2 did the ski lifts for the views. There’s a lot of other things to do but we didn’t have enough time. The workers were nice and seemed to enjoy being there. We went on a week day and it wasn’t super busy but it was steady. I’d like to go back next time we’re in the area.
Maura L — Google review
Very nice slow ride to the top. It is very low getting off the chair, so be ready. The restaurant was very nice, extremely friendly young lady tending to customers. Chicken salad was delicious. Do not buy the meal ticket, as you can spend less ordering individual items. The view of Mt. Rushmore is from the side and very nice, even on a rainy day. Grounds are very pretty and extremely well kept. Restrooms at the top. Would recommend this adventure.
Pam M — Google review
Great little fun park! The aerial adventure park was one of the best I have been to. Safety measures were great & employees were on the ball with any issues. Tubing, Soaring Eagle and drop were fun also, though the chairlift for the Alpine Slide was down while we were there so we couldn’t do the much anticipated ride.
Kevin M — Google review
We went zip lining for the first time! Collie and Dimitri were our amazing guides. They helped with our gear, set us up on the platforms and came with us the entire way. We opted for the full adventure which was roughly over an hour long and over a mile of zip lining. We highly recommend trying this out. Ask for Collie and Dimitri to be your guides. They are absolutely the best. They really care and love what they do!! Don’t forget to sign your name on the survivors board lol 😁
Adventures C — Google review
Chairlift was fun and they have some really nice gardens with waterfalls and overlooks up top. Can even catch a glimpse of Mt. Rushmore! They also have a little restaurant up there with great views but sadly it was closed for the season already. Staff was also really friendly and accommodating. Would def go back to try the restaurant!
Liam M — Google review
*Kid friendly, infant friendly-ish *****edit: there is RV parking at the end of the gravel lot according to the owners! This place is so much fun! The price seemed a little high, as you have to pay for each activity and not just an entrance fee, but their rain check policy is great! I only was able to use two of my paid activities when I visited but I've got rain checks for all i couldn't do! The alpine coaster is super fun, and on the chair ride up you can see mount rushmore! The alpine coaster can be as fast or slow as you feel comfortable. I went down like a snail in the left lane, as the right lane is for speed! The tube hill is super fun! They have 3 fast lanes and one kid lane thats not as steep and bumpy. The zipline is short but fun! The jump tower is an auto belay that lowers you down to the ground. Those were the only activities we could do before the storm rolled in. The weather changes fast in the black hills. If it is only raining the chair lift and zip line continue to operate. The tubing hill and alpine slide closes bc it gets too dangerous to ride down. If you're on the alpine slide when it starts to rain you are instructed to get out and walk your sled down the hill. If there is lightning everything closes. You get rainchecks for every activity you didn't get to do! This place is very kid friendly. Check each individual activity for age, height and weight restrictions. Supposedly the chair lift is for "all ages" however in my opinion its definitely not safe to bring anyone under 3yo on it. I did not see a lactation room and there isn't anywhere private to nurse, but there are a few Adirondack chairs, picnic tables and bleachers under some shade so theres plenty of places to sit with Littles while the big kids go on the activities.
The N — Google review
really fun. would recommend the zipline (1-2 hour one), but it is a bit pricey. the slide is great though (if you get the long zipline tour then you get a free slide ride)

Art Galleries
Dahl's Chainsaw Art, located in Keystone, is a must-visit for art enthusiasts and curious travelers. Founded by the talented Dahl brothers, Jarrett and Jordan, the gallery showcases their exceptional chainsaw carvings made from local woods like Black Hills Pine. With 15 years of experience, they have gained global recognition and won numerous awards for their unique pieces.
Probably the best thing going on in Keystone. All of the work is impressive and there were a few cool pieces that were priced reasonably well. I was approached by a worker who asked if I needed assistance, so it’s customer service friendly.
Thirteendays — Google review
The art at this place is beautiful! Everyone there was willing to help and answer any questions. We all enjoyed stopping here and seeing the different items that have been made and we enjoyed talking to the artist himself! Amazing place! Highly recommend visiting!
Kendra H — Google review
Super beautiful carved pieces, really impressive. I loved the sculptures of eagles, so detailed. There's a big variety of sculptures, from big ones to small ones. Great place
Emilia T — Google review
Where Bigfoot Meets Fine Art (with a Chainsaw) Dahl’s Chainsaw Art is the kind of place you stop at “just to look” and suddenly you’re debating whether you need a 7-foot wooden eagle for your front yard. The craftsmanship is incredible, the details are wild, and the scale? Let’s just say Bigfoot himself is out front making sure you don’t miss it. There’s something for everyone here—patriotic eagles, cowboys, deer who look like they belong at a dive bar, and a throne that makes you feel like a lumberjack king. It’s quirky, impressive, and a little chaotic in the best way. Highly recommend pulling over—you’ll leave with great photos, big laughs, and maybe even a new roommate made of wood.
Jacci G — Google review
Definitely a worth stop while visiting the Mount Rushmore. What an art what a place. It’s hard to imagine how this big gigantic art is made out of wood. It is a very different experience to see these arts. You can take pictures as well. The entrance is free but donations are accepted. I would say show appreciation by stopping by it is definitely an experience you will carry with you for a very long time.
Vijay D — Google review
This was a wonderful place to visit. Chainsaw art! There was a man doing right there on site. Very beautiful pieces of work. I would recommend stopping in just to look. I think they said this is the biggest big foot.
Linda S — Google review
A great roadside shop where chainsaw art is nicely displayed and being made right on site. Honestly the prices were a bit high for me but I really enjoyed browsing. Plus I think these would make nice gifts if ya lived locally. Their bigfoot out front is wonderful , there's a donation box at the building, I think its worth a small donation.
Crazycracker A — Google review
The men doing this work are so talented! The prices are very fair for the craftsmanship. I strongly recommend stopping in and see all the beautiful art.

Halleys Store, located at 501 First Street in Keystone, SD, is the oldest building in the Keystone Historic District. The store offers a wide variety of auction items and operates with varying hours throughout the year. Visitors have praised the friendly staff and unique atmosphere, which includes affordable beer, antiques, thrift store items, music played on a record player, and an entertaining game involving sticking a dollar to the ceiling.
We walked in looking for a snack and didn’t know if we were in a store, bar or someone’s farewell party. It. Was. Awesome - and one of the best atmospheres to be a part of. Super laid-back and everyone seemed to be enjoying each other’s company, and not a phone in sight……so rare. Can’t believe we haven’t discovered this place before. Looking forward to having another beer at Halley’s!

This was a great experience. The 1880 small town is a time machine. Jerry and Norah were knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. Fantastic rose quartz. Would recommend.

Very strange place for 2025. It's from a different era. Definitely visit the ghost in the basement. (He's actually very nice).

I was in the presence of greatness today, as I witnessed the bartender bounce his penny into the bottle of beer for just his 46th time of his illustrious career. This type of fun banter, cold beer, amazing history to look at and much more awaits you here at Halleys. This will always be a stop from now on whenever I'm passing through the area!!!!

We were there last year on a Saturday night and the girls started throwing tables, we had a blast . Also love Ruby's restaurant

We loved this "store" tho we got a little surprise. Lots of vintage memories, lots to see. We were surprised to see a bar room atmosphere when we walked in on the right. People having a good time. The "store" is on the left as you walk in. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. We had a look around....this part of town is the real deal. If we hadn't already had lunch and a couple drinks we might have stayed longer. This place will take you back in time to the old west! Friendly folks too. Thank you

This is a true Antique store. It is a little off the beaten path, but so worth the drive. Just his display cabinets were worth seeing! The owner is pleasant and very familiar with the area history.Great items and good prices.

My husband and I loved browsing all of the unique antiques here while vacationing in the Black Hills. We went to several antique shops in the area and this was by far our favorite. Great selection, organized, and an awesome, personable owner (plus his shop dog is adorable). I purchased a rare oddities cabinet card of a bearded lady and a tintype photo album full of old tintypes. We will definitely be back next time we are up that way. Thanks for the great finds!

Not what I expected from the brochure. Excellent antiquing spot with a wide variety of interesting finds at great prices. The couple that owns it are interesting, friendly, and willing to talk. Definitely worth the trip, can't wait to try my records. Great find.

Best antique shop I've been to in a long time. I almost hated to buy anything because the store presentation was so nice, and removing anything would disrupt the museum like ambience. Located on Hwy. 16A in the Keystone Mall, Mt Rushmore T-Shirts & Co offers a wide variety of souvenirs and gifts including t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, jewelry, and more. The store has recently expanded to provide one of the largest selections of shirts in the Black Hills. Visitors can find ample parking and public restrooms at this location.
One of the few unique gift shops in the Black Hills and not the shirt-press kind—if you know, you know. The prices were decent, and I loved the hat selection. Definitely a must-stop place if you want something of quality for your souvenirs.
Vince M — Google review
There's all kinds of competition for souvenirs and t-shirts for this area! We visited all the shops, but none were as friendly and helpful as "Adison" was with us! It wasn't too busy and she showed us all the suggestions needed when asked about ideas! She was the best! Definitely an asset to this shop and how busy it will be during tourist season! Walking along the boardwalk and looking in this shop is appealing all in it's own! We were impressed by the cleanliness and appeal of the t-shirts and other items displayed! Above and beyond, this is where we'll shop when we return once again! All the souvenir needs were completed here and impressive! Plenty of parking and easy to access your vehicle if you're shopping along the way and need to empty your hands! It felt safe and full of life with several people all around! Enjoy as we did!
RedBullKC — Google review
I liked the reusable bags and found out the owner designed them herself. A good little souvenir store without exorbitant prices.
Thirteendays — Google review
Mount Rushmore T-Shirt and Co has some of the cutest Black Hills merch—and the prices are great! The store is clean, well cared for, and you can tell the owner has put so much thought into stocking items people will actually love. There’s a wide variety of styles too, so whether you’re after something classic, fun, or a little more unique, there’s something for everyone. Just a few doors down is Mackabee Clothing and Gifts, which has more current, everyday trends if you’re looking for something stylish and wearable beyond vacation. We highly recommend both stores as must-shop stops when you’re in Keystone or anywhere in the Black Hills area. We’ll definitely be back—and sending friends and family their way too!
K S — Google review
Great selection and much better than the seasonal t-shirt and souvenir shops on the strip. We bought two hoodies, a long sleeved shirt and a buffalo which we love. Staff was friendly and very helpful. Loved that she shared a photo with us! 🩷
Ellen G — Google review
Not sure why the negative reviews. My family went to every t-shirt store in Keystone and this store is by far the best. The customer service was top notch. The lady who checked us out was very friendly and helpful. Maybe it's the approach and attitude from some people that are inherently negative? We didn't feel this way at all about this store nor its staff. The wide selection of gifts, t-shirts, good prices AND wonderful staff is why we purchased here and nowhere else. We'll shop here again.
Sean F — Google review
My family and I felt very unwelcome in this store rushed to get out the man only spoke with my husband. My three-year-old was being a three-year-old and the man was not happy about it. We bought 2 of the surprise bags for $499 and they stuffed it with news paper all that was in there was 1stickers and 4 post cards not worth it. We will not be returning to this store again.
Mindy H — Google review
Good selection of T-shirt’s for babies/children but TEERIBLE customer service. We purchased a toy bow and arrow/gun set that my daughter wanted and when we got to the car and opened it, one half of the gun fell out (meaning it was already snapped in half but held in place from the plastic covering). My mom brought it in to ask for an exchange and the lady at the register said there are no exchanges once an item leaves the store. Obviously because we purchased a broken item, my mom tried to explain that it was already broken. The lady argued back “how do I know you didn’t break it yourself?” .... We had literally left the store less than 10 minutes after and instead of believing and understanding their customer, they argued back and would rather have a dissatisfied customer over a $9 toy gun. Would not recommend supporting this shop. It’s a tourist town so all they want is your money.

We stopped in today while walking down the strip. The worker there, I believe is name was Kevin, was very helpful and knowledgable about the items in the shop. He took the time to explain the origin of some of the pieces and gave us some history of the area. He even gave us a few suggestions for places we could get breakfast. The items in the shop were interesting and different from the other shops around. I would definitely recommend stopping in. Kevin was very welcoming and helpful.

On our family's first vacation to the Black Hills, my husband purchased a pair of Black Hills Gold earrings from Black Hills Gifts & Gold to match the lapel pin he had given me for our first wedding anniversary. This spring, our family decided to vacation in the Black Hills, and once again we returned to Black Hills Gifts & Gold to purchase a cross necklace and a ring for our daughter. Black Hills Gifts & Gold is located on the main street of Keystone, South Dakota. The store offers a variety of Black Hills Gold jewelry, along with souvenirs for sale. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the jewelry and souvenirs which are sold in their store. We even got to meet the owner's dog, Teddy, the Golden Doodle!

A employee come over to us and told us how their shirts were done she told us we could pick any shirt and decal and it would be done in 10 seconds. what she didn't tell us was the decals were $20 a piece we thought the price on the shirt was the total price we were never told by the employee who talked to us that it would double the price at the checkout. This store is the biggest rip off in keystone

Some amazing items, made right there on her beautiful loom. And better conversation than the rock shops.

My husband and I were visiting Keystone, SD and upon smelling the sweet smell of new leather wafting from this store we sauntered in. Earlier in the day the button on my shorts lost its string leaving me in a tough way in keeping them up. Yikes! The sweet woman behind the counter graciously helped me find a belt that worked perfectly for me. I would highly recommend visiting this shop.
Gwen D — Google review
Great store in the center of beautiful Keystone, loved the leather jackets and all the variety of items they had. Not sure about “outlet” as the prices where of an ordinary leather store. I Specially loved the building, very nice place to visit and shop. Easy to find, nice to walk to. I recommend!

Absolutely the best shop in town. The proprietor spent several minutes discussing bikes and bike-related stuff with my teenaged granddaughter who is also a motorcycle rider. He didn't talk down to her, but rather as equals in the hobby and lifestyle and was very patient and kind. Thank you sir. Our world needs more like you.

The “genuine leather” tagged purse I purchased is fake. I went to a leather shop to ensure I was buying real leather, to find out weeks later it is fake when the strap broke. They even used leather scent to make it smell real. Unbelievable!

Guy behind the counter was rude and not friendly..
Bryan L — Google review
We highly recommend shopping at this store. The owners are extremely friendly and the prices are the best we have ever seen. My fiancé bought a quality purse for the least price she has ever paid but for a higher quality product. It is by far the least expensive buffalo leather we have seen in this state. This is a must stop for quality Buffalo leather products!!
John R — Google review
I love all my purses I bought. We each got wallets. A leather roller bag. Very friendly owners, very helpful. We definitely will stop again.
