Salers in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Salers, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Salers is a remarkably well-preserved medieval village in the Auvergne region, known for its dark volcanic-stone houses, turreted manor homes and panoramic views over the Maronne valley and Monts du Cantal. Classified among “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France,” it offers cobbled streets, a historic central square and Romanesque church that reflect its former prosperity as a regional stronghold. The surrounding high pastures are home to the famous Salers cattle, and local specialties such as Salers AOP cheese and traditional beef dishes feature prominently in village restaurants. Nearby plateaus and valleys provide accessible hiking and scenic drives through one of France’s largest volcanic landscapes.
With favorites like Église Saint-Mathieu, Terrasse De Barrouze, and Salers - village médiéval, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like La Diligence and Le P'tit Comptoir so you can get the best taste of Salers while you’re here. Salers, a medieval village in France, is renowned for its beautiful lava-stone mansions nestled within Parc des Volcans. Surrounded by vast fields of cows, particularly the distinctively red-fleeced Salers breed with long horns, this picturesque destination is famous for producing the eponymous cheese from their milk.
A beautiful small town of lovely old buildings, full of character and charm. We stayed at the municipal camping, a well run and maintained site, although the facilities need updating, they still have some squatties, 😱 the site is within walking distance of the town although there is some free parking in the town. Watch out for market day on Tuesday, lovely.

Beautifull medievil village, the stop wasn't planned, but would have stayed longer had I known it was there where. You must get lost in the streets and then some to appreciate the charm, most of the main streets are just souvenirs shops. Paid parking obligatory, but no problem finding a spot, even in the high season.
Megue R — Google review
Very very nice village. If you don't have time at least make a brake for à small drink

Gorgeous little village among wonderful countryside. Quaint restaurants with delicious food, lovely specialist shops and just so unique! Well worth the long drive to get here, but be sure to stay a few nights to really explore Cantal and enjoy Auvergne food!

Pretty typical medieval rural town with a great surviving architecture. Worth walking around the houses. Plenty cafés and shops... A bit touristic but nice.
Christophe B — Google review
Quaint and picturesque hilltop medieval village with sensational views. Bespoke shops litter the narrow streets, but can be expensive 'tourist rates' Several high end restaurants available serving delicious authentic French cuisine.

Undoubtedly a place to visit. Frozen in medieval times! Very well-preserved!

Lovely mediaeval village about an hour to wander round the village. Two couteliers and a variety of locally made knives from Thiers and France. Plenty of cafes and restaurants with the usual French menu plat de jour - Ok as long as you’re not vegetarian or vegan just like the rest of France!

The upper part retains a row of corbels for machicolations, which have now disappeared (projecting gallery or openwork corbel used for defense). Its exterior facade has a regular facing of cut stones (cut on at least three faces) up to the top of the pointed vault and is extended by an irregular facing (irregular and smaller stones cut only on the exterior face by measurement of 'economy). The Catholic church Église Saint-Mathieu is a magnificent place of worship that should not be missed. It boasts a stunning square and an exquisite church, both of which are worth exploring. Make sure to allocate three units of currency for the parking lot fee, as failure to do so may result in payment difficulties. The church stands as a testament to the beauty and grandeur of Catholic architecture, showcasing intricate details and impressive craftsmanship.
(Translated by Google) Very beautiful things can be observed in this church, including an exceptional Entombment. The discovery of Salers is a pleasure for the eyes, the architecture and the environment are superb. A village made of volcanic stone, Salers experienced its heyday in the 15th and 16th centuries, when the king installed a court there, the Bailliage of the Hautes Montagnes d'Auvergne. The rich bourgeois or nobles who sat there had sumptuous houses built. At this same time, the church was rebuilt, the Romanesque church of the 12th and 13th centuries almost completely disappeared. Even the porch, which would be a vestige, was completely redecorated in the 19th century. It was the work of Jean Ribes (1849-1919), a contemporary sculptor specializing in Romanesque sculpture. The reconstruction of the Saint-Mathieu church, begun in the 15th century, continued into the 16th century, with chapels added. In the 19th century the bell tower was rebuilt in a pure neo-Roman style. The mixture of artistic genres remains harmonious, it brings a certain fantasy to a building that could be austere. Very beautiful things are housed in this church. An exceptional Entombment is to be discovered. Made in polychrome limestone, the expression of the characters is extraordinary. Aubusson tapestries, various pieces of furniture and stained glass windows complete the visit very pleasantly.

Cultural landmark
The Monument aux Morts de Salers 15140 is a unique and historic memorial classified as a Historic Monument since 2019. It features an architectural design in the Gothic style, with a triumphal arch opening onto a space inspired by remembrance gardens near the church's apse. The monument pays homage to those lost in war, particularly during World War I, and is adorned with a rooster at its peak.
(Translated by Google) An original memorial monument, it has been classified as a Historic Monument since 2019. An architectural gesture in the Gothic style, this triumphal arch opens onto a space inspired by the gardens of remembrance, a space which borders the apse of the church. This monument respects the instructions of the time, no religious sign should appear. Located near the south wall of the church, built of volcano stones, it is topped by a rooster, an element apparently common in the creations of architect Casimir Croizet. All inscriptions appear on bronze plaques cast by Joseph BLOT-GALLAND. The city's coat of arms is carved in stone, and two bronze crosses appear on the pediment: the Croix de Guerre and the Legion of Honor. The latter probably appears to honor all these young men who died and never returned. This commemorative monument, original and particularly moving, is an element of the historical heritage of the town of Salers. It has been protected by Historic Monuments since March 13, 2019.

Restaurant
If you find yourself wandering through the charming village of Salers, make sure to stop by La Diligence. Nestled in the heart of this picturesque locale, it exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere that makes every meal feel special. The restaurant is known for its generous portions and delightful regional specialties like truffade, potée auvergnate, stuffed cabbage, and bourriol.
Best steak I have had the pleasure to eat
Donald G — Google review
In the middle of the old Salers, La Diligence is a very welcoming place. The food was amazing as was the kindness of the waitress. We really enjoyed our lunch! Don't forget to book your table in advance!

Best crêpes in Salers! We absolutely loved it, merci beaucoup.
Peter L — Google review
I honestly feel bad writing this review, because the staff was very nice and welcoming. Also the aperitif and house red were very nice. However, the food: In a nutshell, I paid 55 Euros for 2 menus (entree, main, dessert) and 25cl of wine. If I paid half of that price I would have still been disappointed, but I would have gotten over it. My rating is based on my experience in France as a whole. I have been travelling in this country for almost 3 weeks, from Lille to Champagne, from Loire valley to Bordeaux, from Rhone valley to Lyon. We had some amazing meals at very reasonable prices. This was one of the most expensive meals and by far the worst of them all. The entree I could have made at home, the meat was tastless, the potato sides were greasy, and the dessert was store bought ice cream (although they declared it.. oddly). This was truely but unfortunately one of the worst meals I had from memory. I'm sorry to all the lovely staff, but the food we ate was not worth more than one star.

It's ok, but I wouldn't go back. The food was very greasy and in my opinion over priced, especially since there are better quality and priced restaurants nearby.

Great food. Kind hosts. Dogs of all sorts allowed and cats too. That makes for a bit of a stir at times

Nice meal, crowded in the summer, good wine

Le P'tit Comptoir

Restaurant
The restaurant Le P'tit Comptoir offers exceptional cuisine and high-quality products. The intimate and delightful rear terrace adds to the overall dining experience. Although there were a few service errors, such as the incorrect cooking method for certain meats or confusion regarding when to leave after having a menu but not yet dessert, these issues were minor. Overall, this restaurant is deserving of close to five stars, with potential for improvement in terms of consistency and reducing any feeling of confinement.
Friendly staff. Amazing food. For amazing prices

The staff are fantastic, helpful and really care about the food. The food is simply amazing. Freshly cooked and so delicious. Thank you to everyone at Le P'tit Comptoir! We will be returning!

(Translated by Google) Seriously, it's really good. We chose a €37 set menu: starter, main course, and dessert: Charcuterie board. Sliced just right. Steak steak with aligot in blue cheese sauce. Very tender Salers meat, cooked to perfection. Excellent blueberry tart. As a bonus, our four-legged friends are welcome. And so are the ANCV (National Association of Veterinary Physicians).

Restaurant
Nestled in the heart of a charming village, Chez la préfète stands out as the sole dining option available on December 7, 2024. This delightful restaurant is housed in an enchanting old building that adds to its warm ambiance. Guests can indulge in local specialties like farmhouse soup, stuffed cabbage, and truffade—all at wallet-friendly prices. Even when bustling with patrons, the attentive staff ensures that everyone feels welcomed and well taken care of.
Good food and generous portion size, on a beautiful location. It was quite busy but that did not translate to unacceptable wait times.
Philip E — Google review
Although the restaurant was full, the service was fast and impeccable. The use of fresh local produce is definitely very much appreciated.
Philip D — Google review
Whereas the food looked fine, it was not hot enough. Aligot was without any particular flavour and not ‘stretchy enough’. We also ordered mohito and it tasted like there was barely any alcohol. And lastly.. I recommend to check the bill carefully - when we paid they charged us €20 more - €84 instead of €64. Luckily we spotted this and instead of apologising they said ‘ca arrive souvent’ …

(Translated by Google) Very disappointed with this experience. The staff wasn't particularly friendly, and the menu is really basic, with very little choice. The portion served was small, filled mostly with salad to give the illusion of a hearty meal. Flies invited themselves onto my plate, which clearly spoiled my appetite. The aligot had no taste, which is frankly a shame. While the service is fast, you can tell it's mainly designed for passing tourists, with no concern for quality. I do not recommend it.

Nestled in a serene setting, Logis Hôtel Restaurant & Spa Les Remparts offers a delightful escape with its cozy accommodations and complimentary Wi-Fi. Just a short stroll from the Esplanade de Barrouze, this charming family-run hotel features 15 well-appointed rooms that promise comfort and tranquility. Guests can indulge in exquisite dining at the on-site restaurant, which boasts picturesque views of the iconic Salers cows grazing nearby.
I was booked into this hotel by a wonderful lady i discovered after my original booking at le Belfroi turned out to be an awful place. Les Ramparts was truly wonderful, had a great stay and was looked after by 2 lovely ladies at mealtimes. The hotel is in a perfect quiet location with great views over the hills and valleys. The interior is great and spotlessly clean and the rooms soundproof. All dining was excellent. Les Ramparts is what other hotels should aspire to achieve. Unfortunately I had to leave a day early so didn't get the chance to say a big thank you to all the staff who were wonderful.

(Translated by Google) Very well-located hotel with a magnificent view to the sound of cowbells in the valley below. Small park nearby for walking the dogs. Spacious, very clean room with comfortable bed. Large bathroom with walk-in shower. (A kettle would be a nice touch.) Very friendly staff; dogs are welcome, even in the restaurant, which is appreciated. Varied breakfast with eggs, cold cuts, fruit, and pastries. For dinner, for my part, the crayfish starter had far too much crème fraîche and lacked flavor, and unfortunately, I ended up with a slab of Salers cheese. Otherwise, the homemade iced nougat was excellent. As for the spa, I would like to sincerely thank Ms. Sabrina Fageol, who is very professional and, with her medical knowledge, her head massage is fabulous. Very dedicated, her massages are extremely relaxing. With her charm and calm, the rest and change of scenery were complete. I highly recommend.

The restaurant is good, with good value for money, I would say one of the best in Salers. The service is great and the team is really super friendly. Finally, last but not least, the SPA which is a real moment of relaxation. It is not big but it is pleasant. My wife received a massage by Mrs. Flageol, very good.
