Shikotsu-Tōya National Park is a breathtaking natural wonderland that boasts stunning caldera lakes, active volcanoes, and serene onsen resorts. This park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and wildlife lovers alike. While camping outside designated areas isn't permitted, the park's vastness allows for unique experiences in nature. One of the highlights includes a picturesque waterfall accessible from the former Chitose Mine site, cascading gracefully over rocky ledges.
I'll never travel to Shiraoi-cho without this trip planner again
Absolutely stunning volcanic park complete with geysers and sulphur in the air. Do yourself a favor and go further in than just the observation deck at the entrance. There are a number of low intensity hikes to do here.
It's a very interesting and unique place to visit. You'll see geysers and smell sulfur in the air. There's a trail to walk around the entire crater. There's a spot for visitors to dip our feet in the hot/warm water too. A good half day can be spent there. It gets warm so I suggest visiting in the early morning.
Lake Shikotsu snow festival 2025 was held on from February 1 2024 to 24 th February 2024, side of the lake. Different ice scalptures will take your heart and soul.
Access: Own car or route travel bus.
Enjoy . Good time.

Consider going beyond the observation deck for more low-intensity hikes
Plan ahead for lunch at local soba noodle places due to long lines and early closures
Bring sun protection like sunglasses, caps or umbrellas during hot months (end Aug - early Sept)
Don't miss trying out the delicious ice cream available in this peaceful location

Beautiful area, cable car was fun. The bears in their mountaintop park was entertaining. The Ainu huts was educational and an extra bonus was a large 4 point deer lounging about 20 yards from us.
Great place to visit. Not too touristy and quite scenic. The walk to the natural foot bath was great. Only problem is the local soba noodle places have really long lines and they close early. So make time sure you budge time if you wish to have lunch there.
It depends on when you visit! We've compiled data from NASA on what the weather is like in Shiraoi-cho for each month of the year: see the links below for more information.
