Knokke-Heist

Knokke-Heist is a Belgian coastal municipality bordering the Netherlands. It’s known for its beach and the Zwin Nature Park, an area of salt marshes and mudflats that shelters birds like storks and oystercatchers. On the edge of the Zwin is “Hospitality,” a bronze sculpture of a giant hare. The For Freedom Museum illuminates the area’s history during WWII with dioramas, uniforms and original vehicles.

Wow! What a stunning location to view the sunset, you may wanna cover yourself up in winter cos it can get pretty windy. Plenty of paid parking available and it’s not very expensive. The walking paths are amazing and the sheep and cows here are the cutest! Definitely coming back in the summer- if you’re around Bruge, it’s only a 30 min drive to this national park. Do visit!
Great place to learn about the local nature and the bare foot path (blotevoetenpad) was fun. Knee deep in the mud ☺️ Therese a museum where you can sit in a cockpit and fly like a bird among other things. However, i think the tickets are a bit expensive and my museum card didn't give any discount.
The Zwin Natuur Park (nature park) is located along the Belgian-Netherlands border and offers view of the North Sea. There is an informative welcome center with a giant LEGO bird at the entrance and interactive information. The Shelter located just off of the welcome center offers guests food and beverage options. As for visiting the nature park it is recommended to buy tickets online (up to one day in advance) otherwise at the welcome center. There are also trails outside the nature park for cycling and for walking. The dunes overlooking the North Sea and the beach are nice to explore. The closest parking is paid / for a fee. Highly recommend
We had a lovely day at Zwin Natuurpark. We could see a lot of birds at the different stations. Don’t expect to see animals like in a zoo - here they can come and go as they please. The storks just had little ones, this was great to see from the tower. Make sure to take some time for the museum. We felt they presented their infos super well to different age groups and we could have spent hours there alone. Also, it’s beautifully made.
We visited the paid section and it was absolutely worth it. It must be great with kids too, because many of the interactive parts in the park (e.g., guides stationed here and there at different posts to give more explanation) are clearly geared toward children. But adults learn something as well! ;) My favorite feature was the birdwatching hide that uses one-way mirror glass. The "garden" it overlooks has lots of feeders, so it’s teeming with birds. I even saw a jay right in front of us! Awesome.
Very nice activity to do near Knokke. If you don't have a bike or a car you have to walk around 3.5km from the nearest bus stop. It's a nice natural reserve, totally worth the visit.
This flat park is an absolute disappointment, not worth the time or visit. There are barely any birds, unlike the parks back home. It's just underwhelming; we came during the season, but nothing here impressed us. I'd suggest choosing another place for a nice stroll.
The park looks interesting, but the service is poor. There is no any indication that dogs are not allowed at the parking entrance. We walked around, finally found the park entrance, there we found out our dog is not welcome. While we still need to pay the parking fee.

This is a warm and interesting museum with a comfortable environment. The exhibitions are thoughtfully arranged, using various scene models to make it easier to understand the situation during the war. There are also many exhibits to provide additional explanations. It offers a deeper understanding of the Battle of the Scheldt and is worth visiting. Staff are very friendly, we enjoyed our time in this lovely museum very much.
Visiting the For Freedom Museum in Knokke Heist was an experience that left me both enlightened and inspired. From the moment I stepped in, the warm welcome from one of the owners set the tone for a personal journey through history. The passion they exuded was palpable, making the stories come alive without dragging on too long—thank you for that! The exhibits were nothing short of captivating, showcasing a blend of artifacts and narratives that truly honor the past. Sure, some of the seating felt a bit too "nerdy" for a casual visitor, but who cares when you're surrounded by such amazing displays? This museum rivals some of the greats in Normandy, and honestly, it deserves even more recognition. If you’re looking for a less touristy experience that’s rich in history, this is your spot!
Amazing! This is by far one of the best military / WW2 museums I have visited. As a Canadian and retired soldier, I am truly humbled by the extent and detail of this collection. Thank you for preserving the memory of those who gave all for freedom. A special thank you to Benny for an excellent tour.
This is a very interesting private Second World War museum. It's refreshing that the displays aren't stuffed full of weapons and other artifacts. Instead they have created rooms and scenes to describe the story and get the point across. The scene of Canadian troops crossing the canal in collapsible boats I found particularly evocative.
Definitely one of the best WW2 museums. Impressively decorated with attention for even smallest details. Wonderful collection by itself. There are many things I have not seen before.
We rented a couple of e-bikes from Ben's bike on Bruges and literally stumbled onto what I feel is one of the most interesting museums I ever visited. We meet the curator, who, along with his brother and other dedicated people focus on keeping the role of Canadians and British soldiers, who liberated the area in WW2. They have done a remarkable job! People from all over have forwarded memorabilia to the museum. I highly recommend getting a bike, riding along the canals and visiting this museum. I don't think you will be disappointed and you will have an enjoyable day.
One of the best private war museums I have ever visited
What a fantastic museum! As it was a private museum perhaps I wasn’t expecting much; how wrong was I. We’ve had a really enjoyable time reflecting on the many, many original artefacts that are on display. The audio guide is in many languages and really interesting. It gives people experiences as well as descriptions of the displays.

Thought it was small but then it's very interactive so it's more then you think! Nice grounds outside for a sit too. Came mid week and no one else was there. Loads of local information.
Wonderful museum, highly informative and interactive! I warmly recommend it!
The exhibition about history of region and Roman period was very interesting.

Ended up in this place on a rare sunny Saturday in Belgium. Loved the vibes, almost tropical in feel (but this was also due to the weather) the sand white and soft and does not stick to your feet. Knock back a couple of beers while watching the sunset. The foods good, will have to try the BBQ buffet the next time for sure! 10/10 would come back here when it's sunny again
Excellent beach bar. Friendly staff, good selection of drinks, sandwiches and snacks. Watch the surfing lessons with a beer. Nothing too strenuous!
Perfect spot, to escape, enjoy the vibes, feel ailleurs, dream of Africa, tropics or Mediterranean beach bars (ok yesterday it also particularly hot, so thanks to the weather that helped). P.S. salad kip and avocado was good !! Which is not to be given for granted. Pizza not home made nor Italian-style but hey, nobody’s perfect
Good Vibrations only! Nice spot to hang out and have some beers while enjoying the sun! 🤙🏼
I had some amazing kitesurfing classes with a really professional team. Thanks to the teachers and Adrian for managing all this.
A great place for beach games and activities. Offers a good range of food n drinks. Amazing staff and super friendly. Located at the corner of the beach and near the park. Look out for the classic flag to locate!
Nice atmosphere, very dog friendly ! We ate the salads (bacon + goatcheese & advocado + chicken) for 15€ each, it was delicious ...
Nice place to hace a drink and relax. Have a nice view of the beach and all the kite surfers.

Chocolate award for 2018? No problem. Possibly the best chocolate I have ever tasted. From the moment you set foot inside the store, the scent of pure cocoa overtakes your resolve. Kiss your diet goodbye! What impressed me the most was the orange / lemon sticks. 70% chocolate with real lemon rinds and no artificial flavors or sugar. Excellent. Certainly a must see in your Knokke agenda. I will come back at least one more time before I leave.
This is my favorite choice when buying gifts for friends from other countries. The quality is excellent, and the flavors are unique and memorable. Yes, it’s expensive chocolate, but it’s truly impressive and makes a very presentable gift.
Amazing, tasty, fresh and full of variations chocolate shop! My favorites are Tokyo(Yuzu) and Duindoorn! But don't leave yourself a chance to try all others different tastes.
Interesting flavour combinations and absolutely delicious! Top quality chocolates. Wish I had bought more!
Chocolate is good but service is despicable, and today was not a first for us to notice this (but it will be our last). Ladies who are serving are really unpleasant, especially to kids : they observe them all along with suspicious/mean looks, they whisper to each other behind the counter to take away the free samples while we are around... Our kids (4 to 8 yo), were excited as kids could be in a chocolate shop, but we were behind them all the time making sure they respect the place, they didn't take more than one sample each and we bought for more than 50 eur of chocolates in the meantime. A reason we go for chocolate is because of our kids, but Chocolatier M probably prefers you leave them at the door like dogs. What a shame, for a shop which basically sells pleasure, to be so incapable to share any with their (young) customers!
Excellent chocolate but a bit of a hit and miss when it comes to service. I realised I was wrongly charged more and went back to ask for a receipt (i was not given one at first, only a card machine receipt). They gave me my receipt and indeed, there was a mistake - the lady selected other products when scanning, not the one I bought and I mentioned this. I had to wait untill she served all clients (although there were other sellers in store that could have helped) and in the end she made the math, realised I was right and put 2€ in my hand saying "here's your 2€", no sorry, no nothing... I was actualy charged 3€ more, but whatever, there was no point of explaining that 7.5 - 4.5 is actually 3. On top of that, when ordering, I've asked one of each type of pralines just to realise when I got home that several chocolates from the leaflet (that were in store) were missing from the boxes. When picking them, the seller was jumping chocolates, then coming back to them, maybe because she wanted to select the pralines in the order of their shape, no idea, but she clearly missed a few. The shop assistant was clearly new, but she was very rushed. The whole experience made me feel unwelcomed and gave me a bitter taste, happily the chocolates are nice. My favorites were the Basil and the Mojito ones.
Super delicious chocolate and great service👍🤩🍫
