This would have been a 3-star review, had it not been for the unhelpfulness of staff at this hotel.
I left my home at 3am, after 2 hours of sleep, and travelled to Hotel Palmiers for the first night of a longer stay in Lausanne with my sister. The hotel is conveniently located in the city centre, close by to the train station, and mostly looks as described. However, the kitchenette in my room came with dirty kitchenware, utensils and used and smelly sponges from a previous guest’s stay, which the hotel had not addressed before re-allocating the room.
I appreciate mistakes can happen and tried to come to a resolution with hotel staff. I asked if they could provide alternative kitchenware or a wooden spoon from the restaurant below (which was empty and not busy) and was told this was not possible. Instead, staff offered to clean a limited amount of the kitchenware (claiming to be too busy to clean everything), and advised they could not state how long this would take even though my sister and I were hungry and tired after a long day of travel.
By around 7:30pm, the hotel receptionist brought up new dirty plates and wooden utensils that she stated had been cleaned but still (right now) have dried food stuck to them. On pointing this out to the receptionist, she argued she had personally checked the items were not dirty, and insinuated I had dirtied the items myself with my imaginary food.
After giving the hotel multiple chances to fix the issue, and with no sight of using the kitchenette I had paid for, I suggested that they provide a meal from their restaurant so my sister and I could end the matter and go to bed (a meal would have covered the price difference between a room with and without a kitchenette). The receptionist refused, advising us to use the still dirty utensils (which she claimed were “clean”) or pay out of pocket for a meal at the hotel restaurant downstairs. She was defensive throughout, seeming to take personal offence at legitimate complaints.
At this point, fed up of arguing, tired, hungry, and with my sister asleep without food, I asked the receptionist to leave the room as I would have cried otherwise. I then bought a meal at the restaurant opposite the hotel, fully defeating the purpose of a hotel room with a kitchenette.
At no point did any member of staff at this hotel utter the word “sorry” or help me find a suitable resolution. Instead, they have been defensive, argumentative, and blamed me - with the receptionist saying “you should have let us know you intended to use the kitchenette”.
It is not a radical thing to expect to use a kitchenette I have paid for, and had been in touch with the hotel about prior to arrival. It is also not a radical thing to expect a hotel to avoid creating a situation where guests are left unable to eat or sleep. All for the great price of 178 francs a night.
In addition to the above, the hotel walls are very thin so you can hear every noise - people putting plugs into sockets, zipping their suitcases, using the toilet. It makes sleeping almost impossible.
I would definitely not recommend this hotel and I hope they treat future guests better than they have me and my sister. As it is, they have unfortunately ruined our first impression of Lausanne with their lack of hospitality.
