We were greeted by the most welcoming and divine lady at the front desk, Julie Anne. Entree for us was the Greek style Octopus, baby Octopus it turned out to be, absolutely sensational! This place has been running for 22 years and I have been visiting it on and off for the past 15. The owners are down to earth and just wonderful people who say it like it is, with no airs and graces, they just give it to you straight. I love it! Their straightforward Aussie style is perfect for this area and it is refreshing to have blunt and frank conversations with people that remind me of my grandparents when they were alive. They just say what they think and make no bones about it, it is fantastic! Breakfast servings are huge, the coffee is strong, bold and well-made. The great thing about the whole dining experience here is beneath the veneer, they come from a place of love. Their care and attention makes you feel like you are having breakfast in their kitchen on a Sunday morning. I ordered the big breakfast and specifically asked for my eggs to be well cooked as I am not a runny yolk person. We rang late afternoon to book a table for 4 and despite the restaurant being nearly at capacity they kindly swapped a few things around to get us in that night. It was a very cold night but the fireplace made it inviting, warm & cozy. Friendly and happy staff provided great service. From their cocktails to their meals everything was perfect! Arancini balls were flavoursome and the calamari were fresh & melted in your mouth. Both steaks were cooked to perfection as per guests requests. Love the name of the restaurant, the fun stopped there. The setting did not match the prices, and the service most definitely did not. I would say they are the best on the island! A simple meal at a fish & chip store can often be disappointing and stomach wrenching. The General store offers excellent fresh fish (whiting was the fish of the day today) which is the signature of excellent take-away dining in this genre. The room and bathroom were very roomy. Not a new hotel but great value. We dined at the hotel both nights. Hotel does not do breakfast and that was no issue as numerous cafés very close by. We visited the Nobbies and George Bass Coastal Walk during our stay and there are many other things to do on the island. As Melburnites we wouldn't stay that often, but will re-visit to see other attractions. Dinner at the hotel was also good value. Had very little interaction with accommodation staff but it was friendly and helpful. Pub staff were also friendly and helpful
