Sometimes I go to Nelson just so I can eat Aaron Ballantine’s food. It’s that good. We had the tasting menu and the food was to die for, especially the tuna tataki - delicious! I have a number of food intolerances and this wasn’t a problem at all. It’s world-class dining in little ole Nelson. We had the smoked salmon cakes, gnocchi, and snapper, with iceberg side salad. The first three dishes were a-maz-ing. The iceberg was good, but not necessarily my favourite salad of all time. Wrapping it all up, the desert was the butternut custard, a unique dish that I never wanted to end. The service was 5-star: attentive and very friendly without being obtrusive. The vibe of the joint is my favourite style, which is cosmopolitan and not even a tiny drop of pretentiousness. I may move to Nelson just to become a regular here.

It was cosy, delicious and I just loved it! The interior design is really amazing and I loved that they use old vinyl covers for their menus. Also the amount of plants and the little fire place are amazing. The service was really nice and even took a photo of me and my friends after the food arrived pretty fast. I loved that everything was vegan and you didn’t had to think about something being not vegan. That’s why I was actually overwhelmed because it was nearly the first time you actually had to choose from soooo many options! And the food was great. I’ve been here twice now and both times the food has been on point with some of the best vegan food I’ve had. The first time I got the nachos which were amazing. My friend got one of the salads with falafel and it looked good so I came back a couple of days later and ordered it. It was really tasty, it had so many different flavours which had the sourness from the pickled cabbage and the nuttiness of the tahini and the seeds which made it really well balanced. My dad got the sandwich and fries which he said he really enjoyed, we also got the immunity tea which was really yummy. The chowder was incredible - rich and full flavoured, with a beautiful colour, due to the addition of some curry, which gave the dish a lovely yellow tinge. While she suggested that a little more seafood (Scallops, Prawn etc) would have been nice, the flavour and texture of the dish was amongst the best she had eaten. My burger arrived also, and as it was a "Kiwi Burger" it contained some of the expected fillings - Pineapple, Beetroot, Caramelised Onions, Lettuce, Sauce, Cheese and last but by no means least - a juicy, thick beef patty. Sandwiched between 2 fresh halves of the same home baked bun, I was a happy chappy. The burger was HUGE - and while this could be an issue considering the size of my bite, I analyzed the situation and then 'dug in' Starting with it in my hands I managed to take a good number of bites, sampling all of the ingredients together and in their individual parts. When I could get all contents in a single bite, I was impressed by the flavour profile. The sweetness off set by the beef and cheese. I managed to consume half of the burger in this traditional fashion, but then resorted to knife and fork. Another win for me was the fries, they were some of the best I have had in some time. Fresh, crisp and nicely flavoured with salt and paprika. We will definitely be back, as there is a decent sized menu to sample., and I am sure that the rest of the food holds the same level of quality. To top it off, the staff were lovely, and the venue certainly gave off 'Bach' vibes, with some cool kiwiana scattered around the walls, and a number of board games, reminiscent of summer nights with a hot chocolate after a hard days fishing! The burgers are so delicious and they have such a great selection to choose from to. I tried the Diana Soss and hubby had the Chicolas Cage and both were delicious. So we decided to stay anyways and give them a go. So we went up to the bar to place our orders. The total was $111 and should've been $108. Which is not a big deal but I thought it didn't make any sense because I do math quite well and something didn't add up. Well, when we got back to our table and checked the prices again. I order a Tuatara IPA which is $11 but realised that I was charged for a Tuatara Haze Pale Ale, which is $14. My wife said don't worry about it, so I left it. When I went to get another round, I told the waitress that she charged us for a Hazy Pale Ale instead of the IPA, which was a $3 difference. She not only didn't apologise or offer to credit me my $3 for overcharging me, but she charged me for the Hazy Pale Ale again!! I said, you made the same mistake and she took the $3 off. Which technically should've been $6 since we supposed to have had a $3 balance sitting there from a mistake she made. She them slammed the efpos machine on the counter and went in the kitchen flustered, starting to cry. She seems to not be good at pressure and should consider another industry maybe. It wasn't even busy, the place wasn't slammed or anything. Then to top it all off... We had to wait over an hour to get our food! I was going to go tell them we don't even want the food anymore at that stage and ask for our money back (it wasn't cheap.) My wife talked me into waiting and giving them a chance. So we did that and when we finally got the food. No apology for having us wait over an hour. The food was tasteless and didn't have any flavor. My wife steak was drenched in horrible gravy and smothered in it. My snapper was gross and unsatisfying!! It was extremely disappointing and we will never visit this place again. EVER! I'll share the story of our horrible experience to everyone in Nelson or who's passing through. Because they don't deserve to go through anything like this while they're just trying to enjoy their holiday like we were trying to do. SERVICE WAS TERRIBLE!!!

A lady ( loudly and proudly "the owner") snapped loudly at the kids, yelling that they are not allowed to run around and make so much noise,, as to which I got straight up,asked her what the problem was and to stop yelling at the kids, where she very loudly told me that she's the owner and is ok with kids having fun but not making so much noise or running around, where I stated, that's one way kids have fun....at which she did not have much to say as I then decided it was time to leave, poor kids were a bit shaken up as they were just having a good time and no-one seemed annoyed at them. We are all respectful parents that were keeping an eye on the kids but whats disgusting here is how she flew off at the kuds without thinking to talk to the parents,, very very unprofessional, especially as you are "the owner". Another customer that saw this situation was rather shocked and stated that she died not have a problem with dogs running around/dogs that are not spending $$ on food and drinks may I add, to which I stayed that it's crazy as there are no dog kennels but a Kids Playhouse as you enter the venue, which would make me assume kids are welcome here... Anyways, we will definitely not be taking out $$ here in the future and I wonder what "the owner" will think when people realize this is not the kind of attitude that creates support in this community and they too choose to go elsewhere. I'm happy to share positive scenarios on here but also, if this happens, realize there are consequences and I'm not shy in telling people about this experience. Again, the other staff members serving where lovely, as always, and it is a shame to be now no longer going here, but it left a very bad taste in my mouth.

Finally, after the 3rd attempt it appeared with the correct amount - almost double the previous. Happy and I paid. Next saga - the real ale tap: Milk Stout: she poured a pint(500ml) and the top 3rd was foam (no it did not settle over time and become full) - I drank it and said nothing. The 2nd pint was purchased by a friend: Yorkshire Bitter: a little better. Third pint - Milk Stout, was really bad. SEE PHOTO: this is after I went to the bar, and quietly and politely asked if it could be "please be topped up a little" - she did not look at me nor speak, but grabbed my glass and did something with the real ale tap - more bubbles, no liquid. TRIED TO GET A PROPER REAL ALE POUR POLITELY. Two Thumbs you should be ashamed of yourself. I have not met this lady before, I have been here many times before, and have never been treated so poorly, ever. I drink real ales a lot (nz, UK, Sweden, Australia, USA, the list goes on) and could not let the poor pour for the price go un-noticed a 3rd time - and I was punished and made to feel like a villan by the kiwi girl behind the bar - the foreign co-worker rescued the situation. Has she been properly trained? Why was she so rude to me? Why did she not even have the decency to speak and use words?
