Regensburg

Regensburg, a Bavarian city on the Danube River in southeast Germany, is known for its well-preserved medieval core. The 12th-century Stone Bridge, a 310m-long icon with 16 arches, crosses the river to the old town. The 13th-century Regensburg Cathedral, a twin-spired Gothic landmark, is home to the Regensburger Domspatzen choir. Walhalla, a Parthenon replica just east of the city, honors illustrious Germans.

Nestled in the heart of Regensburg's Old Town, Porta Praetoria stands as a remarkable testament to ancient Roman engineering and history. Erected in 179 AD, this monumental gateway once served as the northern entrance to the Roman military camp known as Castra Regina. Constructed from robust limestone blocks, it not only highlights the architectural prowess of its time but also offers visitors an intriguing insight into Regensburg's rich heritage.
We preserved old Roman area and wall in Regensburg Altstadt. Various explanation signs relay history of this area . When in Regensburg, you must go see the Porta Praetoria. It is a gate preserved from Roman times. From what I understand, this was the Northernmost gate to the Danube River. It is only partially preserved but it is still such a cool sight to see when you are walking down the street and you see it. For me, it's always as great to see it as it was the very first time that I came across it, purely by chance. There is so much Roman history here. This city is so cool. It is located right behind the Regensburg Cathedral ( The Regensburg Dom). So, you make sure that you are on Domplatz then keep on walking, following the curve of Domplatz, it will curve to the right. Follow it, and the street becomes Krautermarktstraße. When you reach the end, turn right and you will be on Goliathstraße. Stay on it and it becomes Unter den Schwibbögen. You will immediately see the big Porta Praetoria to your right.

If you are expecting to see very much Roman-era building works here in Germany, you're probably going to be disappointed. Yes, they should be properly preserved and documented. But you will only see a very few stones in the outline of a gateway that look exactly like the photos. Cool, but not particularly destination-worthy on their own. I heard a guide tell someone that Pope Benedict used to live there. Not sure where they got that gem from (he didn't). Certainly worth a quick look-see if you're already in town.

There is not much left of what once was a gate like the Porta Negra in Trier. Now the remains are incorporated in the buildings around. The gate was built in 179 CE as the northern gate to the Roman legionary fortess Castra Regina. In a Roman Military camp (castra) this was the main gate leading to the praetorium which was the commanders headquarters or residence. Hence the name.

a partly preserved roman gate north of the Alps and known also as the watergate, due to its location near the Danube river. made of Corinthian limestone. only part of it is visible for visitors.

If you're a history buff, you've got to see this. Got to love those! Romans.
Francine J — Google review
It was restored based on the remains of some of the Roman gate. Therefore, if you know the historical meaning of this, you will take it meaningfully, but you don't know it, you can only see it just as a building. It is located in the old town.

St. Peter Cathedral, a magnificent example of High Gothic architecture, stands proudly in the heart of Regensburg, dominating the skyline with its impressive bell towers. Originally constructed around 700 and later rebuilt in 1273 after a fire, this stunning cathedral is not only an architectural marvel but also home to the renowned Regensburger Domspatzen choir.
Amazing place to Visit. Such an incredible architectural work. But if you need to go inside, you have to see their religious activities time. Because at that time doors were closed to the visitors.every thing was fine and tremendous work and were well maintained to the future generation.

St. Peter’s Cathedral is absolutely breathtaking. The Gothic architecture is stunning, with soaring spires, intricate stonework, and beautiful stained glass windows that create a peaceful, awe-inspiring atmosphere inside. It’s hard not to be impressed by the history and craftsmanship. Even if you’re not typically into churches, this one is worth the stop. It’s right in the heart of Regensburg, so very easy to visit while exploring the old town. Highly recommend taking a few quiet moments inside—truly a highlight of the city.

Massive pure Gernan gothic church that was built from the end of the 13th to the beginning of the 16th century using the architecture of French cathedrals as an example. The inside is dark and has beautiful details like the silver altar. The stained glass windows from the 13th and 14th century are impressive and the most extensive, still preserved, collection of medieval stained glass in the German-speaking world. An interesting detail was a large waterwell with a hoist and bucket inside the church which was used as a secure source of water for the clergy, cathedral staff and cleaning.

The cathedral is truly impressive! A magnificent structure that’s hundreds of years old. I can’t even say whether I liked it more from the outside or the inside. Every day in summer, the organ plays at noon, it’s absolutely amazing! An architectural masterpiece that definitely deserves attention. The only downside is that the exterior has been under renovation for many years.

Learned so much about German history from our Viking excursion to Regensburg Cathedral. Stepping into this medieval masterpiece, we were instantly awed by its towering Gothic architecture and the sheer scale of the place. The amazing stained glass windows, glowing with centuries-old craftsmanship, were absolutely breathtaking. Our guide wove fascinating tales about the cathedral’s medieval sculptures and its historical significance as a key center of Christianity in Europe, making the past feel alive and vibrant. The world’s largest hanging organ was a true marvel, suspended like something out of a dream, and its presence added to the cathedral’s awe-inspiring atmosphere. Learning about the Regensburg bishopric’s influence gave us a deeper appreciation for the city’s role in shaping European history. This cathedral is a must-see for anyone visiting Regensburg—its beauty and stories will leave you speechless. Highly recommend making time for this incredible landmark!

Great experience. Today was the 75 anniversary of Caritas and St. Josef Hospital celebrated with bishop Rudolf and former cathedral choir member (Regensburger Domspatzen). Usually the holy mass is starting on Sundays at 10 a.m. Be early enough there to get a place!

Our tour guide told us this cathedral is always under some kinds of construction in one form or another 🤣 While we were here the towers were in repair and there’s a choir outside make Ng beautiful music.

This historic town, which was once the first capital of Bavaria and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts attractions like the stunning Regensburg Cathedral, patrician towers, and stone bridge.
What a magical Christmas market! We received discount admission vouchers from our hotel, shout out to Hotel Das Regensburg😉(and it was a very short walk). There are so many beautiful lights at night. Many food and gluwien options. Great handmade items for sale as well. Definitely worth the admission price. Don't miss this one!

Palace was much larger than I had anticipated and much more grand than I thought. Beautiful polished marble columns, statues and mosaic floors. Even though the tour is only in German, they provided my wife and I audio guides so that we could follow along and learn the history of the palace and the family that is still living there.
Philip S — Google review
LONG tour (90min) in German only and they are weird about taking photos. There are only a couple of German tours daily so plan ahead. The tour provides pretty basic audio guides in English. It IS odd to an American to keep hearing about German princes and princesses in the present tense, as well as 'princely' this and that. The old town bus does not loop even remotely close by, for unknown reasons. Once you're on the tour you're stuck for the duration. (I'm not much of a tour person). The tour areas inside are not air conditioned. Regensburg old town is fairly small but expect a full day of walking to and from everything.

dated to the 19th century, a very strict guided tour allows you to see a part of the castle and Monastery. the tour costs 16€, in german and with audio guide for english speakers. the guide is very friendly and gives a lot of infos. you pass from the dinnerroom to fiesta hall to sleeping room to the chapel and then you take the stairs down to the monastery hallways with gothis arcades until the Court church. very impressive, dont forget to buy the guiding book since photography is not allowed.

Tour a functioning palace! We enjoyed the tour, though for English they give you a headset with recordings for most rooms. The guide spoke only in German to other guests, but would answer our questions when we asked. Can't take photos, but if you appreciate art, history, and want a peek at a unique home, I'd recommend it.

I'm writing this mainly as a warning for well-meaning people who don't want to waste their money on some of the most disgusting people on the planet. The tour is nice and the tour guide was lovely, the house looks pretty but is not necessarily something super special and you can find castles like this all over Germany fortunately. The problem is the people who own this place. Not only do they actively ruin it by showcasing their own terrible taste, they also force the poor tour guide to praise them to high heavens... And for what? The matriarch of the family who's currently still alive is a racist and fascist who definitely should get some painting lessons because her self-made portraits are terrible, and her son, the little prince, is a failed racecar driver whose racing record I had to look up is nothing but failure. These people have the audacity to think that anyone in their right mind is coming to see this place for THEM, rather than for the possibly interesting history and art in the house. And my goodness do they like to showcase how entirely out of touch they are. One room has their "official portraits" in white tie, tiaras and all the jewelry money can buy to show off how rich and important they are (they are not important by the way), and the next room has 5 screens of the entire family who was still alive at the time of installment with "blinking portraits", which amount to a gif of them staring into the camera for 5 seconds showing them blinking, about which the guide said "they want to show they're just normal people like us", because they are in street clothes on these million euro portraits?? Other "highlights" of the tour include an 18th century room with a giant out of place model of a racecar, and an old marble staircase with some random fried egg looking art piece called "the sun rises over the Kilimanjaro". All in all, just don't go, you'll just leave angry at how obnoxious such a family is and you don't want to waste your time on them. If you want to go see some royals or something, go to the Netherlands or Belgium and check out their palaces, at least these people know how to shut up. If you want to see pretty castles, Bamberg, Munich, Würzburg, Bayreuth and Augsburg have equally or even more castles and there's a direct train going twice every hour to Vienna if you feel like visiting Schonbrunn. The great thing about those castles is, at least their residents didn't ruin it with terribly out-of-place modern "art" installations about themselves (mind you, I am a fan of actual modern art). At least you won't spend your hard-earned money on these out-of-touch good-for-nothings.

Discover the Walhallabahn - Walhallabockerl, a historic narrow-gauge railway that used to connect Regensburg-Stadtamhof to Worth an der Donau. The railway was named after the nearby Walhalla temple and was a popular mode of transportation in its time. Although it is no longer operational, visitors can still admire the preserved historic locomotive as a symbol of bygone eras in Regensburg.

(Translated by Google) The historic Walhalla Railway, affectionately known as the "Walhallabockerl," once ran from Regensburg to Wörth an der Donau and is remembered with nostalgia today. POSITIVE: + Historical significance: Opened in 1889 as a meter-gauge narrow-gauge railway from Regensburg to Donaustauf, later extended to Wörth. It originally served to improve access to Walhalla, the temple of King Ludwig I. It was an important link for passenger and freight transport in the region, especially for visitors, quarry operations, and local businesses. The line was 23.4 km long, with a maximum gradient of 33 ‰, technically challenging for the time. + Folk culture charm: The nickname "Walhallabockerl" testifies to local ties and fond memories. Many Regensburg residents associate the railway with childhood memories, excursions, and family stories. The railway ran through picturesque towns such as Tegernheim, Donaustauf, Bach, and Wiesent, which also made it scenically attractive. NEGATIVE: - The railway was finally closed in 1968, which many considered a loss for the region. - Unfortunately, there is no tourist replica or museum railway today, although there would be interest. CONCLUSION: A brief glimpse into the past that can be beautifully integrated into a city tour.

When you visit Regensburg, don't miss the breathtaking postcard view from the Steinerne Brucke, or Stone Bridge. This remarkable structure, built in the 12th century, boasts 16 arches that gracefully span the Danube River. As you take in the panoramic sights of Altstadt's rooftops and spires, you'll appreciate how this engineering marvel once connected northern Europe to Venice, transforming Regensburg into a bustling trading hub.

Storstad Restaurant in Regensburg offers a unique dining experience with its European-Asian fusion dishes served in a modern, minimalist setting. The restaurant is the brainchild of Chef Anton Schmauss, who drew inspiration from his time in Stockholm and his culinary explorations in Sweden, Switzerland, and New York. Storstad has garnered acclaim for bringing the purism and boldness of new Scandinavian cuisine to Regensburg.
Outstanding dining experience. If you find a reason to visit Regensburg, make sure to put Storstad on your list. This beautifully minimalistic Scandinavian designed restaurant provides you with a welcoming warm atmosphere and a splendid view on the roof terrace. The staff is super friendly and attentive. We enjoyed the 5-course dinner of highest quality and great flavors accompanied by a very interesting and complementing wine pairing which had a focus on French and German Whites. This was an evening we will definitely cherish in our memories. Thanks again to the well-rehearsed team at Storstad.

Had a wonderful dinner at Storstad. The food was creative, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. The service was warm and professional, and the wine selection was truly outstanding – from the Mosel to Sicily, every glass was a perfect match. You can feel the passion and attention to detail in every part of the experience. Definitely a place I’d love to come back to.

We came here for lunch. Excellent menu, very professional and attentive staff. The roof top terrace offers amazing views of the cathedral - extra points for that. Would be worth to come up here just for an after work drink. My husband ordered the Suckling pig, presented with an elegant twist on the classic Bavarian dish. I had fish, a summery dish with green curry foam, pineapple and coconut milk. All very good, however, the amuse bouche was even better - truly outstanding combination of flavors and a demonstration of what the kitchen is capable of. Home-made bread and spread was excellent as well. At the end of our meal, we were served raspberry macaroons - delicious! Pretty steep prices even for lunch (starting at 40 € for a main) but I guess that is expected at a Michelin star restaurant.
Sarah D — Google review
Pleasant. In Regensburg one mainly expects Pork knuckle and beer - and one gets more than enough of both. Upscale cuisine is sadly rate. So it is very fortunate to have the Storstad in town. The cuisine is a crossover of Asian, German, and northern influences. The menu we had was framed by Tom Ka Gai - a soup in the beginning and, interestingly, as an ice cream at the end. Packed into that was sashimi with beetroot, pasta with white truffle, codfish sea buckthorn, and reindeer with creamy field salad. The only (minor) complaint, or rather suggestion, I might raise is that I think the rather strong sea buckthorn is in danger if overpowering the fish - that is, of course, a matter of opinion. Overall we very much enjoyed the evening. The location is central, service is competent, and the food keeps the tension of being surprising without being overwhelming. A tip to the head from my side.
Arne T — Google review
Storstad is a wonderful restaurant located right in the heart of Regensburg. The food here is TOP notch and they take food exploration to a whole new level, by pairing ingredients that you would not think would go together in a dish. That is part of the appeal I Guess as not everything is a great success, but their adventuring spirit with taste and flavour is what makes this place exciting. When you look at the menu, you become befuddled as you would think in your head, how on earth would that work together, so you order it just to find out for yourself. And when the food comes and you look at the beautiful plate, the anticipation builds up and when the first bite is taken, it is either a not bad or a how on earth did they achieve this synergy of flavour!!! One great example was the goose liver dish which was served with a runny yolk quail egg, enoki, edamame, sesame, a rich broth, pickled daikon and green onions. The liver was accentuated by the rich flavours of the broth and each of the accompaniments came together to give you a fun way to mix and match your flavours and enjoy the liver in a multitude of ways contrary to the usual method which is just one dimensional. All in all, a fantastic restaurant to go for a nice Long dinner where you can sit back and relax and enjoy food in a way which should be the case, anyway which you like to do so, of course not in the nude please.
Russell Y — Google review
The food is perfect but maybe not as innovative. The service is flawless- staff are very attentive and responsive - almost too attentive. What was a bit daring was the appetizers in a bucket of ice - seems out of place and am not convinced yet on the taste of pickled watermelon. As usual we tried the menu - and every dish - as expected - perfectly executed. The taste - excellent. Nothing to complain. But we missed the "wow" factor. There were no surprises. Just a bit boring if I dare say. Fortunately the menu is changing.

Bavarian restaurant
Historische Wurstkuchl, also known as the Historic Sausage Kitchen, is a 500-year-old restaurant located in Regensburg. Originally serving as an office during the construction of the Stone Bridge, it later became an inn catering to various workers and travelers. Today, it remains a historic gem where visitors can savor traditional bratwurst with sauerkraut and homemade mustard.
On a trip from Berlin to Prague we decided to stop and look for lunch in a picturesque German river town called Regensburg. We walked down the old narrow streets looking for something to eat, and by chance we found a small riverside building that had quite a lively crowds. This kitchen specialized in bratwursts, and I am not lying when I say these were rhetorical best brats I've ever had. Throughout our entire trip through Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic, this was not only the best bratwurst, but it was the best meal. Nothing fancy, small grilled brats laid upon small but firm roll, and topped with the most flavorful deli mustard. We ordered several of these brats, and they were very affordable. The service was great, and the brats came out very quickly. You can peak inside the kitchen and see the grill masters hard at work. Then you get a tray designed to perfectly hold the brats as you take them to an outdoor table where you have a gorgeous view of the Old Stone Bridge that crosses the Danube. We later found out that this kitchen is historic. It is the oldest continuously open restaurant in the world. Some tips: Order a few per person. They are hearty, but relatively small. You won't mind filling up on them. Also, you can order the mustard online. I recently purchased some to have on hand. Cheers!!

This is a super popular riverside restaurant with plenty of seatings but it’s so hard to get one of those nice outdoor tables. 😄 Our grilled sausages & sauerkraut, potato soup, roasted pork & dumplings was very tasty but slow. This is a definitely a tourist destination both good and bad.

Our Yelp pal Hal totally nailed it with his recommendation for Historische Wurstkuchl in Regensburg—what a spot! Stepping into this place feels like time-traveling; the back wall is over a thousand years old, and according to Hal, it’s the world’s oldest sausage stall. The sausages were fantastic, flavorful, and at just 4 euros, it’s a steal. We grabbed a few bottles of their famous mustard to bring home, which we’re already excited to crack open. Whether you’re eating in or taking it to go, the vibe here is unbeatable. The setting right by the 700-year-old Stone Bridge and the Danube River is just perfect—charming and picturesque. Service was a bit slow, but once we ordered, the food came out lightning fast, so no complaints there. It’s such a unique spot, blending history with delicious eats. Highly recommend swinging by Historische Wurstkuchl for a quick, tasty bite and a dose of Regensburg’s incredible past!

It’s a nice setting and the food is great and so is the beer. Great view of the bridge and close to a lot of things. They were pretty busy for a Saturday and toward the end we felt ignored but that can happen anywhere.

Expect very long waiting times for the to-go/take-away sausages. The sausages were good. The whole history was very interesting. If you‘re ever in town, grab some some to try! Highly recommended.

We were in downtown Regensburg by the old town bridge and were looking for some German food, given we only visit Europe every couple of years. Now, eating along the river near the old bridge can be a daunting task because of the potential wait, and food costs. However, two of us decided to share a dish of sauerkraut and sausages, along with some soup. The food was great, the service was good, and the staff professional. I hope that if you decide to visit this restaurant that your experience will be as good or better than mine.
Geo-T22 P — Google review
I’m gonna tell you not to go here. But you’re gonna go anyway. I mean, it’s supposedly the longest continuously running restaurant in the world. Started way back as place for the bridge builders to get food while they were building the bridge (which is worth the visit) it basically stayed open in one form or another ever since. And that was like, 900 yrs ago! Anyway. I say don’t go because it’s a super tourist trap. Basically overpriced sausage and beer with slow and uncaring service. But hey, go and say you’ve been there and then go anywhere else. If you do: wait in line for take away, it appears to be much cheaper and you can say you got food from it.

The Osteria in Nuremberg is the perfect place for anyone looking for an inviting atmosphere and a wide range of delicious food and drinks. Here you can find everything from hearty pizzas to Italian and Mediterranean delicacies, as well as döner kebabs and juicy burgers. The diverse menu also offers vegetarian options and halal dishes, so there is something for every taste.
Typical yummy L’Osteria taste. Friendly, smiling waitress despite the enormous heat that day! Pizzas are big, can be shared and each half can be different. Kids pizza available. (Choice limited) The place itself is not great. A big room with many tables. Not very cozy. It can get very loud to a point where it’s hard to have a conversation. Due to the open kitchen and the open windows it can get extremely hot in the dining area. Table reservation recommended.

WIRTSHAUS IN HEUPORT is a restaurant located in a historic patrician house, offering a great view of the city's landmark from its location opposite the west facade of the cathedral. The restaurant serves a large brunch buffet featuring an array of fresh local produce and specialty meats, as well as cold-smoked Norwegian salmon and traditional Bavarian sausages. The dining hall provides ample space and an authentic Gothic atmosphere.
Delicious food. TBH didn’t expect such level from the restaurant in the center of touristic area. Fare prices. Nice stuff.

Wonderful place with great ambience and seating capacity. They can easily manage 2 or 3 events along with the normal servings. The place has seatings both on the ground floor and a vast area of seating with beautiful interiors in the first floor walking through the vintage wooden staircase. This seems to be an old vintage place maintained well with modern design elements. Love to take my friends sometime later.
DERIN D — Google review
Really nice spot with great ambient - view of the cathedral and interior is mix of old gothic style with renovated modern style (but decent and sophisticated). The food was average - the fish was quite nice taste and and done in original way. But the beef broth missed any taste and seasoning and the pork knuckle was bit over roasted. Moreover the waiting time was bit long. So overall average experience, but regarding the tourists area, could be worse.

"I dont want to think about the food". Not great words to hear after eating at a spot. We wanted to have a fun sunday lunch. After ordering we see the food arrive. And low and behold, its a giant plate with almost no food... it felt like a scam. Getting very little food for 15 euros. Cant recommend

Solid scenic spacious (reaaaallly spacious inside, courtyard, 2nd floor) spot with well-plated delicious Bavarian food served up quickly by friendly attentive staff. Worth it even just for snacks and a drink, if not a heavy meal. Atmosphere legit, except on weekends street performers directly targeting outside seating (to include walking through tables for donations) for what some might call entertainment (but which I found obnoxious...plus they sucked, to be honest). Dog friendly. Took cards or cash. Other positive ratings definitely warranted.

Food is ok - but a little on the expensive side-the interior decoration needs a little getting used to. Tourist unfriendly!!!!! Avoid at all costs

Very tasty food, service was very friendly. Decoration was pretty nice too. Food ordered was an Original Wiener Schnitzel, 2 Sausages on Sauerkraut and crispy pork belly for a total of about 72 €.

Food tastes good but is not worth the money. Also food portions are really small. The indoor seating is a bit cold, not very comfortable.

Nestled in the heart of Regensburg, the Regensburger Weissbräuhaus is a charming eatery that embodies the spirit of Bavarian cuisine. With its rustic ambiance and inviting atmosphere, this restaurant serves up traditional dishes like knödel dumplings and hearty pork stews, perfect for those seeking an authentic taste of Bavaria.
Feels like an authentic place. Food was good, portion size was more than enough. Good beer made by them. Staff was kind and helping!

We found the restaurant while we were looking for another resturant which is on the top list of the place to eat in Regensburg at TripAdvisor. While we were passing by, I noticed two guys drinking beer. The beer looked great and I asked my wife to stop and drink beer before we go to the restaurant we were looking for. We ordered our beer and booooommmm. The best beer I have drunk in my life. Then I asked the waiter whether they served food or not. He siad yes. We ordered schnitzel. I am not exaggrating, one of the best I have eaten. And the potato (french) fries, awesome. We had two liters of beer, two schnitzel and we paud 63 Euro including the service. I definitely reccommend this restaurant. You won't regret.

Came by for a family dinner and sat outside right on the edge. Very hectic and noisy. Not the most ideal spot with a small kid. Friendly waiter. Prices fairly high, price for a cordon blue at 21,90€ not quite justified. Food overall tasted alright but, again, didn’t justify the price. (Also got misled by previous google reviews in regards to the menu and prices - but that’s not the restaurant’s fault). Menu in German AND English

It is a nice option downtown Regensburg for traditional Bavarian food. The atmosphere is great, inside the restaurant there’s some nice and shiny brewing tanks and the decoration is typical Bavarian. The pork knuckle (Schweinshaxe) is pretty good, but this time was slightly overdone on the outside which gave a bitter flavour to it therefore the 4* rating, but the skin was nice and crispy so it was still enjoyable. Try also the Weißbier sampler if you wanna taste all the varieties they offer without getting too drunk.

If you are in Regensburg and want to get perfect, authentic, delicious Bavarian food with great and friendly service, this is absolutely the place to go to. Portions are large, but the food is so good, that the size of the portion only means you get to eat more of the great food this place serves. 10/10 would recommend.

Went here mostly for the beer, and had a good time. I had their beer taster plank, and it was nice. Also had a duck-burger that was tasty
