Sights & Landmarks
Fort Frederick, a historic granite and rock fort constructed in 1624 by the Portuguese using debris from a destroyed Hindu temple, is a significant landmark in Trincomalee. Adjacent to the fort lies the Maritime and Naval History Museum, housed in a colonial building that was once the residence of the Dutch Naval Commissioner. The museum showcases artifacts from the Dutch rule and is considered one of the top tourist attractions in Trincomalee.
Old fort in Trincomalee containing also an important Hinduism temple. Fort Frederick itself can be visited with entrance tickets: you can do a small tour of the different places composing the ancient fort with nice views on the city and the natural port. This ticket will also hello the site to train preserved.

A Fort built during the time of the Portuguese. It’s maintained by the archeological department and you need to buy tickets to explore it. There are ruins of old bunkers, and look out points, and weapon mounts. Interesting if you’re into history, you might need about and hour two depending on how much you like to look and learn. They need to add more signs to explain.

Overlooking the calm waters of Trincomalee Bay, Fort Frederick stands as a symbol of Sri Lanka’s colonial past. Built by the Portuguese in 1624 using stones from the destroyed Thirukoneswaram Temple, it later changed hands to the Dutch (1639) and British (1782). Each power expanded the fort, drawn by its strategic position above one of the world’s best natural harbors—a legacy of conquest carved into stone. I wish if they can show more details and directions inside the fort.

A beautiful historic fort overlooking the stunning Trincomalee Bay. Originally built by the Portuguese in the 1600s, later used by the Dutch and British. Today, it’s home to a small military base, but visitors are welcome to walk through and explore. You can enjoy peaceful surroundings, old stone walls, deer wandering around freely, and a breathtaking view from the top near the Koneswaram Temple. Perfect place for history lovers and photographers. 📍 Location: Trincomalee, Sri Lanka ⭐ Best time to visit: Morning or evening for cooler weather and soft light for photos.
Wajira A — Google review
Built in the time when Portuguese invaded, it has changed hands to Dutch and to English, there is an army camp in this location and the Kodeshwaram temple separately. There is a small fee for locals and different fee for foreigners ( been told its too expensive) The views are stunning and the overall fort is spectacular, The Kovil was destroyed by the Portuguese back in the day and the statues are still underwater near tye sawmi rock, the dives is about 80 feet and an experience of a lifetime, the water has such a unique colour, Do this if you can, any local dive centre will take you there if you ask for " Swami rock"
Bhanuka V — Google review
The view points were gorgeous, without these the entrance fee for the rest wouldn't be worth it. It's interesting to note that the history of the area, but there isn't lots to see and not much information about the historical aspects. If you're going for some nice views and a wander, great! If you're going for the history, I think most would be disappointed due to the lack of information.

Fort Fredrick, perched in the heart of Trincomalee, is more than just an ancient fort – it’s a living piece of Sri Lanka’s layered history. Built originally by the Portuguese in 1624, later occupied by the Dutch and British, the fort has seen centuries of colonial power struggles, yet today it stands calm and welcoming to visitors. The drive through the fort’s gates feels almost surreal the main road runs right through its massive stone walls, lined with towering trees and shaded pathways. Inside, the atmosphere is peaceful, with deer freely roaming about, adding an unexpected charm to this historic site. The fort also houses military installations, so certain areas are restricted, but visitors can still explore sections that lead to breathtaking views of Trincomalee’s coastline, including the famous Koneswaram Temple perched on the cliff’s edge. The blend of colonial architecture, sacred sites, and scenic ocean panoramas makes it a unique stop in the city. Wear comfortable shoes, bring a camera, and keep an eye out for the friendly deer that often wander close to visitors.

Beach
Uppuveli Beach, situated in the Sambalathivu area of Trincomalee District, is renowned for its pristine beauty and tranquil surroundings. This stunning beach features golden sands and clear turquoise waters, making it one of Sri Lanka's most beautiful beaches. Visitors can enjoy a long stretch of sandy shores and partake in activities such as swimming, snorkeling, and beach volleyball.
Beautiful beach, soft sand and no stones. Not many people. Locals are very friendly and positive, very nice for the warm welcome. The road to the beach is a bit unkempt, but the beach itself is cool. In the morning and at lunchtime they catch fish, it's cool to see what they caught))
Dasha F — Google review
Beautiful long narrow strip of white sand that stretches for miles with a lush back drop of Palmyra trees. At our time of visiting this beach – the more northern end of the beach – it was very quiet, but we imagine that in peak season that it could get very crowded as many big resorts open straight out onto the beach. The sea is stunning and very warm, but there is a bit of an under current in the wash in places to be wary of if you are not a confident swimmer. There are many dogs along the beach and several with ticks and/or fleas, but most generally leave you alone – like most of the dogs around the island. Our only criticism – and what a lot of online sites and the gram don’t show – is the amount of washed up litter and waste, it’s really quite bad in parts. It would be good to see the government make the local beach front resorts pay in together for mechanical beach cleaning throughout the year. Other than that, it is a banging beach to have a swim at! Just watch out for those occasional sand fleas, they can give you a whoooopa of a bite – worse than a mozzy! Update: having visited several beaches in the northeast and in the south of Sri Lanka, our comments about dogs, sand fleas, strong under or cross currents in the sea, the mass of general waste/litter, and in some places, raw sewage, etc, is pretty much the same at many beaches. Of course, there is probably some beaches that are more pristine than others elsewhere around the island, but we are only providing comment on the beaches we have visited and/or seen. This is something that is generally not shown on Instagram reels or any other social or online platforms – makes it all somewhat a bit fake really. Still pretty beaches though! Just take a proper look around you – and watch where you sit!! Visited 04-01-2025 ORTN - aka B&A

Well, it’s a beach With cafes and dive shops. But with waves and not very clean. Stray dogs around , but that’s a plus for me) I witnessed an interesting tradition- when fishermen gathered together and divided the catch. That was the most memorable part. We also had a few whale tours, they start at this beach as well

A perfect mix of chill vibes and fun beach life Uppuveli Beach is the ideal place to relax and enjoy the tropical side of Sri Lanka. There are some great beach bars where you can grab a drink or a bite to eat while listening to music and soaking in the sea views — perfect for an easygoing afternoon or a sunset drink. But if you're more into a quiet, natural vibe, you can just lay out your towel under the shade of the palm trees and enjoy the sun, the breeze, and the sound of the waves. Whether you want to socialize or simply unwind, Uppuveli offers the best of both worlds.

Another beautiful beach in Trincomalee 🌴⛱️. Tourist attraction is a bit higher than other surrounding beaches, as I noticed 😉. Calm and quiet place. If someone needs staying calm , avoid unnecessary crowds, This is the best beach place in Trincooo. There's no secure vehicle park here as my understanding🤔. The entrance is free.
Asela M — Google review
The water is nice and the beach could be an absolute paradise, if there wasn’t so much litter flying around. Plus there seems to be a constant smell of burnt rubbish in the area. What a shame.
Manuel M — Google review
Uppuveli Beach offers an amazing sea view, especially during the off-season when it's less crowded. It's a peaceful spot, perfect for enjoying time with friends. There are no lifeguards on duty and water is not clear as other beaches in Trinco ( Nilaveli, Marble, Town beach). The beach is conveniently close to the town and has many hotels nearby, making it easy to find accommodation. The clear waters and calm atmosphere make it a great place to relax and unwind.
Nuwan M — Google review
The best beach in Trincomalee. Long, wide, beautiful. Located in the bay. Pleasant fine sand, comfortable entry, slowly deepens. Great for kids. The best sunrises are perfectly visible from it at 5:55. On the beach there are sun loungers, showers, cafes, snorkeling and diving stations. From here you can go on an excursion to whales and dolphins. The best time is from 6:00 to 9:00, from 15:30 to 18:00. Enjoy life!

Military Museums
The Maritime And Naval History Museum, housed in a restored 17th-century Dutch commissioner's residence, showcases a collection of naval artifacts. The museum features models of ships, naval knots, insignia, antique cannons, and exhibits on underwater coastal life. Established in 2013 near Fort Frederick, the museum is situated at the site where the Dutch first landed in Trincomalee.
Really interesting spot if you’re into history. The place has a nice collection of shells and maritime relics, plus some beautiful old cannons displayed outside at the entrance that instantly catch your eye. The best part was being able to climb up to the rooftop for a view over Dutch Bay. The building itself is impressive but honestly looks a bit run-down, and inside some of the rooms had no electricity, so I ended up using my phone flashlight to look around. Entry is free, though they do accept donations, which feels fair considering the condition of the place. Overall, it’s a beautiful and atmospheric place, but it clearly suffers from lack of funding and maintenance.
Dmytro M — Google review
The museum exhibits interesting historical artifacts and shares vast knowledge about the maritime vessels along with facts on Trincomalee harbor. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The building and the surrounding premises are badly in need of an upgrade. However they said that they were out of tickets since it's a weekend (Sunday) so we were asked to pay Rs. 100 per head. I saw some reviews which said they were free to enter while others have paid only Rs. 20 per head, so it wouldn't be certain until you visit. The lights were flickering in certain exhibit areas and some exhibits were in the dark. There seemed to be a few empty rooms and the place doesn't seem to be well maintained. They must give priority for the renovation.
Shenu S — Google review
A sadly underfunded and neglected gem with many interesting exhibits. The building itself is of historical interest. Parking available, entrance free.

Historical building displaying range of maritime artifacts. Diarama illustrative of key Sri Lanka naval events. Shows national intent to preserve significant buildings.

An understated museum in a beautifully restored historic building. It tells the long history of trading and the navy in a small number of exhibits. The staff are very enthusiastic and will put on an interesting 10 minute video if requested. There's a good view over Dutch beach from the roof. No entry ticket but voluntary contribution at the end.
Mike L — Google review
Setting foot inside this museum is like travelling back in time. It primarily showcases the naval history of Trincomalee. The guide passionately describes each exhibit in detail which makes it more enjoying. You get to know a lot about the region. The museum is open everyday between 9 am to 4 pm except Tuesday. Entry fees are LKR 100/= for foreign adults and LKR 50/= for foreign children. Though its a small museum but for me, it's one of the best museums I have visited around Sri Lanka.
Time I — Google review
Shows the history of invasions and changes overtime in the country and around the area. Officials who looks after the place got good knowledge and willing to explain the history of the items on display. Building was in ruins and was rebuilt. They have done a brilliant job in restoring the building. You can see pictures of its former state. Can climb to the floor around the roof where you can get good views of the sea front.
Samitha D — Google review
You must visit this place when you travel to trinco. This is a very good place to explore the naval history of Sri Lanka. a lot of knowledge and information can be obtained here. The building is restored well. It is free for all. A lot of monuments and artifacts can be seen and it all preserved well. Parking available.

Swami Rock Dive Site, also known as Lovers Leap, is a popular diving spot in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. It is home to the Koneswaram Kovil, a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The original kovil was destroyed by the Portuguese but has been restored on top of Swami Rock. Many artifacts from the original kovil were discovered underwater and returned.
My friends from India did the best dive of their lives. Good location. Also, it's not difficult if you are not diving and just waiting on the boat, as the shade of the rock keeps you cool.

You can enjoy this amazing view when you get to the Sri Thirukoneswaram Kovil. If you are lucky the water would be blue, or else it'd be muddy or so. Great view point for photographers. Take care of yourself when moving along the edge, there is a safety fence, but be careful.

This is one of the recommended dive sites in Trinco. We can meet with lot of reef fish and reach a max depth of 18m. So if you have OWD this is a go to place in Trincomalee. We can also find statues of hindu gods which were dumped by the foreign invaders.

🔸15 min Boating Time 🔸20-22 m Depth Swami Rock is a popular spot for diving, thanks to the stunning coral and marine life and it is one of the greatest vantage points to spot numerous blue whales. Right below the oldest temple in Trincomalee this beautiful rocky area is surrounded by many legends and mysteries. Actually I did not go to this place, I saw it when I was at the Hindu temple, just in front of it. I'm gemeral: nice place. Nice views and beautiful surroundings. A nice Hindu temple worth it to visit (20 ruppes the entrance that you pay when you go out). Calm place as well. We went in midday time and the floor was burning (you enter with no shoes), so just saying-but is not the end hahaha As well, there are different stores on the way where you can treat yourself good with some juices, sweets, snacks or items. Some pictures from some juice on the way to the temple and in the temple. Dutch Bay reccomended as well!

We’re staying about 15–20 minutes away by tuk tuk, and we actually found this place on Google. We came here for breakfast — my friends ordered breakfast bowl, and I went for more of a lunch-style plate. The prices are reasonable — not cheap, but definitely not expensive either. And the portions are fantastic! We’ve had trouble with small portions at many places, but here you actually feel full after your meal. Fruit bowls were served cold, hot dishes were nice and rich, and everything was super tasty. We’re leaving very happy. Great food, great service — such a lovely experience, thank you guys ☺️

Relaxed seaside vibe and excellent food at Cafe On The 18th, Trincomalee During my stay in Trincomalee, I stopped by Café On The 18th and was really impressed. The location is right on the beachfront with sand-under-your-feet seating and a gentle sea breeze — perfect for breakfast, brunch or a laid-back evening meal. The atmosphere is easy-going yet stylish, making it a great spot to unwind. The menu offers a lovely mix — think fresh coffee, smoothie bowls, avocado toast for morning, and sushi/ramen for later in the day. Many reviewers highlight the consistency in quality and presentation. The service was friendly and attentive, the staff stayed cheerful even when busy. I appreciated the little touches (presentation, garnishes) which showed care. One thing to note: the prices are a bit higher than local average restaurants in the area—but the beachfront setting, quality and relaxed ambiance justify it for me. In short: if you’re in Trincomalee, want something a bit more special than a typical cafe, and don’t mind paying a fair price for the experience—Cafe On The 18th is a very good choice.

Really enjoyed Uppaveli and Cafe on the 18th was amazing. The food is really good and presented really well, great choice and we went for lots of our meals. Yeah it isn't cheap by Sri Lankan standards but still cheap for us westerners! On our final night we ate on the beach next to the fire sat on beanbags, it was very memorable. The coffee is quality and you can order from the other food stands (Chinese - great dumplings!, Mexican & pizza truck) if Japanese isn't your thing. Great beach in front, really clean and lots of shaded seating. A*

Pros - - managed by a single superwoman, who is very efficient and quick - yummiest curry ive had in SL Cons - - super expensive - crazy small portion size ( like we got 2 prawns in ‘prawn curry and rice’ for ~2300 lkr) I went to Preni which is nearby for my dinner and the portion size was great and taste was super yumm for half the price.

Thanks to Naomi and family for a delightful experience all round, and for your genorosity, not only in your lovely food, but in sharing your Tamil culture and language with us, even if just for a short time. We sincerely hope to return.

Small family run restaurant that offers fantastically fresh and tasty authentic dishes with huge smiles and very warm welcomes – a 5 star all round! Being the time of season we were visiting, Uppuveli was a ghost town and many places (shops, restaurants, and resorts) were closed. But this little gem of a place was open and we had the place to ourselves. We had fish (tuna) roti and curry with a pot of black Ceylon. Absolutely delicious. Whilst dining, we sat and watched the world go by listening to the family’s eldest son play the keyboard quietly in the background and complete his homework. Felt like they let us into their family home, it was so lovely. With the meal, pot of tea, and two bottles of water, it come too 4,900 LKN (£13.22 – at time of writing), well worth every rupee! We loved it that much that we went back the next evening to eat here again for our final night in Uppuveli. Like most of the restaurants we visited across Sri Lanka, the meals take time to come out to the table. That is because they are being made fresh and from scratch – you can’t ask for much better than that! We love this place and would highly recommend dining here to anyone visiting or staying in the area. We would certain visit again when in Uppuveli! Nanri maṟṟum mikka aṉpu! – we think that’s right!! Eastern Lanka Seafood Restaurant is a local family-run eatery in Trincomalee that offers traditional Sri Lankan and Tamil cuisine at very affordable prices. The restaurant is known for its delicious fresh seafood, traditional Rice and Curry, and Kottu dishes. Despite occasional wait times, the friendly service and freshly cooked food make it worth the visit. The unassuming ambiance adds to the charm of this hidden gem where visitors can enjoy a truly excellent dining experience with authentic flavors.
We came here twice during our stay in trincomalee, and had the roti and curry options. The first time we had a crab and a veggie, and the second time we ordered a chicken and an egg roti curry dish. It’s a really simple set up but the food is so tasty, and priced really reasonably. The staff are very friendly and kind. I’d highly recommend this place to any friend or family.

Excellent seafood restaurant in Trincomalee! The taste was amazing, big portion of serving, totally worth for the price! The hospitality of the chef and his family was so good, very friendly and accomodative! Definitely going back to this place for great food!

Had such an amazing dinner here. I had the prawn curry with rice. I had to wait a little bit to get since the mother of the family handles the kitchen all by herself, but it was week worth the wait. The atmosphere is really nice and u feel very welcomed by this nice family. Will definitely come back

We had such a great experience here! The food was authentic and delicious – the jumbo grilled prawns were cooked perfectly and served in a huge portion, and the vegetable curries with rice were full of flavour and variety. Everything was very reasonably priced for the quality and amount of food. What makes this place extra special is the family who run it – they are so warm and welcoming. Their little boy added such a lovely, personal touch to the evening. It really felt like eating in someone’s home rather than just a restaurant. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a true taste of Sri Lanka.

Being trincomalee a more touristic city with the locals minding more their own business compared to the rest of the island, this place well represents the city. The seafood is very well cooked and there are some alternatives to the usual srilankese dishes. In the kitchen the mother of the family prepares big and delicious plates. The family has a sweet way to welcome you with a good smile and leaving you your space and time in the yard. I was there twice. For dinner, in two we took a calamari chop suey and a grilled full fish. The calamari were soft and accompanied by a lot of good vegetables and the fish was delicious as well seasoned with soy sauce and accompanied with tomato salad with sweet cucumber. With two waterbottles we spent around 4000 rupies. We went back the day after for breakfast and the fruit salad with curd was very cooked, they went to buy the fruit right on the moment. I fully reccomend this place if you want to try local food, seafood and have a nice breakfast.

We had breakfast, lunch and dinner several times here during our stay in Uppaveli. It’s a great family run place offering excellent food. Service is a little slow (although this is the case everywhere in Sri Lanka), which makes sense because it’s 1 person making everything from scratch. The mixed fruit rotti and fruit lassis for breakfast were our favourites!

There’s not many dinners from a restaurant i can say I’ve had that were unforgettable, but tonight’s dinner was absolutely astounding! I had the prawn curry plate with a rotti, my mother had the fish curry plate and my partner had the sea food kottu. With my mother and I being Sri Lankans ourselves, we know what true, authentic curries taste like and this ticked every box, everything was super fresh and so tasty! If Bohas (the little boy) is there, ask him about cars and bikes, he is a young petrolhead! Even ask him about his modified pedal bike! He’s an absolute cracking lad! If you’re in the Trinco area, come here for your food. You won’t be disappointed!

Nestled in a charming locale, Nero Kitchen is a delightful culinary gem that offers an array of mouthwatering dishes. While I didn't indulge in their pizza this time, the tantalizing aroma wafting from the kitchen certainly piqued my interest. My experience included fresh fish, a seafood platter, and pasta—all beautifully prepared and bursting with flavor.
We wanted to eat a pizza after several weeks in Sri Lanka and we found this pizzeria that surprised us for good! We ordered a large mushroom pizza, which they prepared in front of us. The pizza was delicious, very tasty and we were served super fast. The staff is friendly and kind. We recommend it and we will surely come back to try another pizza! 🍕🩷

We didn’t try pizza here, so the only thing I can tell about it is that they have a proper place to cook it. We tried fresh fish, seafood platter and pasta- all dishes were lovely. Took ages to prepare food, but it’s a common thing for all restaurants here. We asked to keep a birthday cake in a fridge and bring it when asked for - guys were very helpful. 25k for the dishes I mentioned+ a bottle of cheap Spanish red

After avoiding any western food for 2 weeks, my boyfriend and I decided to give Nero’s pizzas a chance as we were craving some variation in our meals. We were not disappointed!! The pizzas were so tasty, the service was great and the staff were awesome. I would highly recommend this spot!!

An amazing wood fired pizza made fresh in front of us. So delicious 😋. Lots of other dishes available as well. High recommend

Food is trash, paid 3500/- for a tandoori chicken "pizza" got a thin crust "pizza" with the essence of what used to be chicken on it. No chicken pieces, no sauce, nothing. Plenty of others places around to get a great loaded pizza for cheaper. Go to this place if you like being disappointed only.

Best pizza's ever! The base of dough is perfect and taste and toppings of the hawaii pizza was really great. Freshly made in the woodoven. We've been here twice and I would go there for the third, fourth, fith time if we stayed more nights in Trinco.

From our hotel we started looking for a restaurant nearby, and then we came across Nero Kitchen, when we arrived the host was already welcoming us and letting us have a look at the menu. Then in the restaurant we had a few annoying little things, but that was resolved very quickly. Food was tasty and of good quality, I would definitely come back again.
