The Cheese Market in Alkmaar is a delightful event that kicks off on the last Friday of March and runs every Friday until the end of September, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Waagplein. During July and August, you can also enjoy this charming spectacle on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. This historic market showcases traditional cheese trading practices, complete with vendors dressed in period costumes, cheese carriers, and carts.

(Translated by Google) The cheese market in Alkmaar is, of course, very touristy, but still a must-see. We were there at the end of September 2024 for one of the last markets of the year – it was still quite crowded, so it's worth arriving early – parking is readily available within walking distance on the other side of the large canal in the Ringers parking garage.

Its diverse exhibits offer insights into the band's journey to stardom and enduring impact on music history. What a gem when you least expected it. Amazing to see the effort put over the years to collect every imaginable Beatle's' related artifact. A true landmark and a highly enjoyable time capsule
Assaf A — Google review
More like a big shop than a museum. Not coherent, feels like a collector's display of random stuff than a museum that tries to tell a story. Also most of it is just merchandise... it's the museum of merchandise so if you're a collector and also want to buy things you'll enjoy.
Daniella A — Google review
The biggest Beatles museum is in Alkmaar? Yes it is! Its a bit of a mess but there is a lot too see. Originals, replicas from the Beatles, the owner is a real true fan. Some clothes from Elvis too and old radios and TVs. Very cool place, close from the center.
Helene-Magalie N — Google review
So much to see, very interesting. A must for Beatles fans
Troy B — Google review
Waw guys that was really a beautiful experience. The museum is big and there are so many rare things to see. Just think that only one collector did everything himself. Azing the founder of the museum is a surprising person, source of many news on the Beatles. You could be inspired by him. I really recommend to go, take a trip to the museum, it's amazing! and you have there a super nice souvenir shop as well.
Gianluca P — Google review
This is by far one of the most impressive and special museums I've ever visited. The museum is primarily the owner's own collection and he has stories for every item--made all the more impressive by the fact that it's an entire BUILDING of artifacts, two warehouse-sized rooms absolutely filled to the brim with diverse pieces and research. The displays range from incredibly rare albums and covers to curios like BEATLES BRAND MOTHBALLS. It truly conveys the scope of not only their music, but their cultural influence and how ubiquitous they became. The info boards are in both Dutch and English and contain a wealth of information. The owner's written a ton of books on the Beatles, to the point that they actually used his work as supporting research for a lawsuit. The museum itself is a labor of love--passion in every display. The Elvis portion has a surprising number of his personal belongings, such as clothes and jewelry, as well as a dedicated room with comfortable chairs for viewing Elvis concert recordings. The Sea Transmitter Ships are also not to be missed! I was honestly thrilled by them--absolutely beautiful, stunning, meticulous work coupled with research boards about the history of ship transmission and how it impacted music history. We arrived at opening and have to go back--it was too much to take in at once. I can't recommend this museum highly enough. If you go anywhere in Alkmaar, it should be here.

Lovely museum! If you’re interested to learn a hit more about Alkmaar’s history, hit “De Victorie” gallery first - fun and interactive history of one of the founding moments of Alkmaar. Upstairs you can find the “Alkmaar Prachtstad” gallery, which features various important moments from the city’s past and present including a cool graphic design and fun movies and interactives. Art history more your thing? “Alkmaar and the Golden Age” is a gallery with some gorgeous 17th century paintings, and there’s also modern/contemporary art from the Bergen School of painting. The café has original and very tasty food, the shop is mainly books.

It was a good museum, it had some interesting paintings of Van Gogh as well. And the description on the paintings was also good

Musume has good measurement of COVID-19. The staff is friendly. It’s worth for EUR 12 to visit the museum and it’s very interesting to see the past of 15-16 centuries how Alkmaar fought with Spanish and got rich because of the trading. Worth to visit ;)

A very complete collection for such a small museum! Worth coming back every time there is a new exhibition. The permanent and interactive exhibit about the Siege of Alkmaar is super interesting!

This museum is beautiful. As soon as we entered we were given some delicious cheese snacks. You could play lots of cheese themed games and watch a movie in your language! the souvenirs were beautiful. If you are in the area, go and visit it.

A very interesting and fun museum to visit. Among regularly exhibits one can find interactive games and video terminals that are pretty fun for children. The staff was nice and accommodating.

Well, we are not Dutch. Just a small museum? Yes, but small museums are our favorite. Although we found familiar objects and things, we also learned new things. In our country, cheese is eaten more fresh and there is no tradition regarding cheese maturation. Among other things, we had no idea that the Netherlands exports so much cheese. It was pleasant and fun and together with the Kaasmarkt it completed the beautiful day we spent in Alkmaar.

Interesting idea of a cheese museum! On a small surface there are exhibits that show you how the activity of producing cheese has developed over time. The fact that it also has an interactive part makes the small museum even more interesting.
Claudia A — Google review
We were really excited for the little cheese snack, but we didn’t get anything :(. Otherwise it was really cute, they made the best of the space they have. <3

A fun little museum, especially for kids, to spend an hour learning about the Dutch history of cheese 🧀. Lots of interesting facts to learn and machinery to see. My kids really loved the Interactive games in the museum, which kept them occupied quite a bit. The ladies at the entrance are lovely and the price is very fair. You even get a nice piece of cheese when you enter the museum and the kids get to do a fun sticker puzzle through the museum. If they hand it ik at the end they get a small price. Be sure to check the movie at the back which shows an insightful story you don't want to miss. It switches between English and Dutch every so often.
Rutger W — Google review
Such an interesting place to visit and learn about Edam and Gouda.
Maria S — Google review
The museum opens at 13:00, both the museum and the shop are interesting. And can discover a lot of fun facts about cheese making, also there's a retro TV shows the cheese commercials from 1960 till recent.

Restaurant Abby’s is a stylishly decorated establishment located under the famous Molen van Piet. It's a favorite among locals and visitors alike, offering a warm atmosphere and friendly staff. The menu features a mix of traditional Dutch dishes and international flavors, accompanied by carefully selected wines. Situated at the end of Ritsevoort, it's an ideal spot to enjoy lunch or dinner, with the option to indulge in a delightful High-Tea experience.
We had a very pleasant evening at this restaurant. The appetizers were superb! Actually the best out of all food/drinks we had. Also the main dishes and dessert were good. We had some white and some red wine. Service was very good and pleasant. It is possible to pay by card. I would definitely come back to try further dishes.

Amazing food! We ordered the crispy rice with salmon, Sashimi & dumplings for starters. The fish was fresh and the dumplings seasoned to perfection. Main was top tiers, as for dessert you must try the chocolate soufflé (it’s more a cake but it was delicious) Worth a visit when in Alkmaar.
Vatanya D — Google review
Lovely location right below the historical windmill of Piet. Great service and personable staff with a smile and a chat Food food too will definitely go back here.
MP L — Google review
I ordered “fried sushi tuna,” expecting cooked tuna. Instead, it was raw tuna on top of fried rice. When I told the waiter I don’t eat raw fish, she said she would check if they could cook it. Then she came back and said they couldn’t, and told me “you can give it to someone else.” I found this response very rude and unprofessional. The menu description is misleading, and the staff should handle such situations with more respect and care.

Wilhelm V — Google review
Just had a late evening dinner at Hofman Bar & Restaurant, and it turned out to be the perfect escape from a wet and windy night. The atmosphere was immediately welcoming — warm, cosy, and inviting, with a relaxed vibe that made settling in easy. The staff were genuinely friendly and attentive without being overbearing — a lovely balance that made the whole experience feel personal and unrushed. The menu isn’t overly long, which I always appreciate. It’s thoughtfully curated, offering a well-balanced mix of starters, mains, and desserts — something for every palate without feeling overwhelming. I opted for the Lobster Bitterballen to start, and they were fantastic: crisp on the outside, rich and creamy on the inside, and full of flavour. For the main, I chose the entrecôte, cooked to perfection over the charcoal barbecue. It was served exactly as requested — juicy, smoky, and tender. The accompaniments were equally impressive: sweet baby carrots, tender asparagus, and garlic-roasted potatoes that were unbelievably good. Overall, Hofman delivered on every front — atmosphere, service, and food. I’ll definitely be back, hopefully on a less stormy evening, but even then, it’s clearly a great place to take shelter and enjoy a memorable meal.

A very nice bar in the center of Alkmaar. Good coffee, good food, very friendly service... it's surrounded by silence and you can relax.
Krystian J — Google review
Don't get me wrong, the little amount of food you get on the semi lunch tastes good. But the quantity is simply not enough and by that way to expensive! Both of us where simply very hungry after and had to take a sandwich back home. 15 euro per portion and not even full by a long shot. This is getting out of hand price wise. Also the English couple on the table next to us complained about the same. And on top you only get the (small portion of) meat you ordered. No vegetables or anything. So it tastes every bite the same. Service for the rest is good and the place looks "gezellig" too.
P B — Google review
Whoever punched one of the cooks in the face definitely didn't do it because of the food! The food is absolutely superb! It's a mixed menu of cuisines and cooking styles all done very well and the idea is to share and taste many things. Every dish was very tasty, nicely seasoned, well cooked and had a nice back-and-forth thing between cooked and fresh products. We felt the love and saw the quality on every plate. Even the cheesy bread was a topper! Great place!

Charming Place with beautiful interiors and super friendly staff. Great food with lots of even vegan offers
Elmar G — Google review
I was here as a restaurant guest at breakfast/lunch. The Soepp has very friendly and caring staff which are all super nice and open to help. The atmosphere of the restaurant is really nice, loved the concept of mixing a vintage store, restaurant and hotel all together. There were games placed on every table to play with with a great selection. The food options were all vegetarian and are really great with a good selection of vegan and vegetarian options with very responsable prices. IMPORTANT TO KNOW: There are cats in the restaurant which live there so keep this in mind if your allergic or want to bring your own pet to the restaurant. But this was a really comfortable safe space with unisex bathrooms and very open staff.

In Alkmaar for a couple of days we selected this restaurant for one of our dinners. Located in a former calibration center and beautifully renovated (impressive high ceilings and open kitchen as well as a glass roof covered terrace). Welcome was friendly and very attentive (rare these days, so our compliments for the waitress!!) , and we were offered various seating options We selected to dine on the covered terrace, which overlooks a garden From the menu (nice to see some Dutch food specialities featured!!) we selected the smoked eel followed by guinea fowl ragout & slow cooked veal, and for dessert an apple crumble Food quality was excellent and portion size impressive....great value for money Definitely a place were we will return and highly recommended to those after a great culinary experience in the center of Alkmaar
Thomas V — Google review
Food is good but service is slow and not very attentive. Wait-staff not well-trained. We stood for 10mins and no one came to show us a table so we had to go looking for a wait-staff instead. Throughout service, also spotted a few times when a wait-staff would appear with plates of food looking totally lost as to which tables they belong to. Made a reservation and requested for vegetarian afternoon tea and still got served smoked salmon and raw beef spread. Didn't bother to send it back as service was already slow and had a movie to catch. Good thing friend and I are not vegetarians but just wanted to go meatless yesterday. Am a frequent customer at IJkgebouw. Nothing wrong with the food but service always lets it down as it's very inconsistent.

Neder is a restaurant located in an 18th-century wine warehouse in the heart of Alkmaar. The name 'Neder' reflects both the low landscape of the Netherlands and the restaurant's philosophy of cooking with what nature provides. Abbys, where Neder is situated, offers a stylish interior and a terrace for outdoor dining. The menu features carefully selected wines and beautiful dishes made from local, seasonal ingredients.
So good that you focus on the experience and not taking photos…. Wonderful people, warm and friendly. Creative and surprising food. Only Dutch wines which were a great surprise and the non alcoholic drinks were top!! Looking forward to attend one of the workshops. Thank you for such a nice experience.

Amazing place. The dishes were all locally sourced, very creative and simply fantastic. Oysters with ants were some of the best oysters I ever had. Pork rib was packed with flavour. Beef tartar with smoked egg, delicious. The staff was super nice, answered all our questions and created a great atmosphere. Also, dutch wines can be really nice. Obviously the price is high but they do deliver a great dinner menu.

We had a wonderful dining experience at Neder. We loved the friendly and professional staff, the creativity of the kitchen team and the delicious products of every dish. The philosophy to use only local products of the area worked perfectly. Congratulations!
Claudio S — Google review
Neder received a Michelin nomination Sept 18th and (update) just was awarded the Green designation. They deserve it. Foodies in Amsterdam owe it to themselves to visit. I came from Seattle, Washington US. What distinguishes Neder is the chemistry - even Alchemy - of the Nederlands and the Ponder sourced ingredients. The first aperitif was distilled essence of conifers. A beautiful palette cleanser. Then there was the distilled young pinecone essence in a later dish. There were the large caramelized roasted garlic from the upper polder, and the micro “French onion soup” made with rich broth and the oil from 25 year old cheese. The flavors I enjoyed were ones I have never enjoyed before and can’t describe - and I won’t have again until I return. Neder’s true farm to table experience is one of the top ten dining experiences I’ve had over the last 30 years - including many 3 star Michelin restaurants across the world. My photos capture the appearance- but don’t due justice to the hours, weeks and months and foraging that go into the delightful sensory experiences of the flavors you will encounter. Enjoy ! Highly recommended.
Eric B — Google review
Absolutely divine experience from start to finish - the service was impeccable, the flavours and textures invigorating and meaningful and the atmosphere intimate. If you’re looking for a quiet place with all-local ingredients, ethically sourced, that cares about delighting guests and remaking what the dining experience can be, come to Neder. It’s a true home away from home. They even got me a little dessert and gorgeous postcard when they found out it was my birthday - it felt neither contrived or weird, just perfect.
Kit M — Google review
Neder has become our restaurant to go in the center of Alkmaar. Since the moment we tried their fine-dining, we have been excited to come back and try all menu inspired by Dutch nature at a different seasons of the year. Neder has managed to surprise us all the time with their creative food/herbs preservation, harmonious drink pairings and fascinating dish preparation processes! The team is friendly and passionate about what they’re doing and you can definitely taste it.

We spent an absolutely great evening at the restaurant Neder in Alkmaar! The menu was excellent – each dish was not only incredibly delicious, but also beautifully presented. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive, the service just perfect, a really well-rehearsed and working hand in hand team. We were particularly impressed by how much effort the team put into explaining the food and its preparation. All in all a great experience that we can fully recommend! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Kerstin P — Google review
Best restaurant in Alkmaar—by quite a long shot—and probably best in the area. Brian’s team at Neder has set a new bar for quality for the city and is bringing much, much needed culinary innovation to the region. We had a wonderful experience—with dishes that invoke both wonder and nostalgia—don’t skip out on the (non-alcoholic) beverage pairings, they make a range of delicious kombuchas, kvass, and sodas in-house.
