Flensburg

Flensburg is a town at the tip of the Flensburg Fjord in northern Germany. Its brick gabled Nordertor, built around 1595, is the last remaining city gate. The Flensburger Schifffahrtsmuseum chronicles the town's seafaring past. Nearby, the shipyard museum Museumswerft displays recreated historic ships and hosts boatbuilding classes. Museumsberg Flensburg explores art and cultural history from the Middle Ages onward.

PHÄNOMENTA is a science museum that offers interactive experiments and optical illusions, as well as public lectures. It's an enjoyable experience for people of all ages, with a particular focus on children. The exhibition has many scientific experiments that arouse both wonder and curiosity in kids. If you're in the area looking for something meaningful and fun to do with your children, PHÄNOMENTA is definitely worth visiting.
This science and experimental museum is a captivating destination for visitors of all ages. It brilliantly showcases the fundamental principles of physics along with more intricate concepts, making complex ideas accessible and engaging. Nearly every exhibit invites hands-on interaction, allowing guests to explore and experiment firsthand. The museum's cafeteria offers a delightful range of food and drink options at affordable prices, making it a perfect spot to recharge. Overall, the visit is both fascinating and educational, filled with opportunities to learn in a dynamic environment. The exhibits are thoughtfully arranged across several floors, encouraging exploration and sparking curiosity at every turn.

Great place for all ages, very mind-stimulating and fun. It could be really nice is it was a place in the museum where we could find the right solutions/answers to the questions. We spent a bit more than two hours, but it could be more if we tried every single exhibit. There is a cafe one level up, which sells pastries, coffee and a large variety of soft drinks jouce.
Natalia P — Google review
Absolutely loads of experiments and interactive elements spread out over 4 floors. Some more detailed instructions of what you need to do and explanations of the outcomes would have been very helpful. Many things were self explanatory for adults but .y little kids were often confused about what they needed to do or what the point of that particular experiment was. Nevertheless they had a great time trying everything out for a few hours! Parking was 8,40€ for 4 hours which I found shocking. If possible look for alternative cheaper/free car parks than the designated Phenomenta one.

Cool place to visit and enjoy together with family. Lots of fun and interesting activities to try out. Enjoy your time there and have some fun.
Bjørn E — Google review
Incredible location for very little money.. Great for kids, even our three year old loved it, but even better for older kids to learn physics and concepts. We used 2 hours, but had to hurry through the last couple of exhibits.
Jacob R — Google review
Fun science museum with a lot of hands-on activities. It is clearly designed for school-age children, not much for little ones. When crowded, it is hard to get to do all of the activities.
Stephanie P — Google review
Great stuff, lots of things to do on practical machines that show simple physics. Kids will enjoy this. Only getting a ticket is a pain since you have to calculate at least half an hour for standing in line to the single open ticket counter. we wanted to go sunday, but there was over an hour of waiting time, so we came back on tuesday to stand in line for over half an hour.
SuperMobian — Google review
Brilliant museum! Most of the installations are easy and impressive. The kids need very little guidance and mostly run around absorbing cool impressions. One idea excited me most: just a box with sand which is colored topographically by a beamer 🤩

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Nordertor, also known as Norreport, is a significant historical monument in Flensburg and the last remaining city gate in the area. Built in 1595, this Renaissance marvel served as protection for nearly two centuries. It stands as a testimony to the wealth accumulated by merchants through trade with Mediterranean and Caribbean countries. Crossing this gate feels like stepping into the real north of Flensburg, away from its shopping wonderland, and into a diverse community of Flensburgers from around the world.
Nordertor is one of Flensburg's most iconic landmarks, serving as the old northern gate to the city. Built in 1595, this historic structure is a symbol of Flensburg's medieval past and its importance as a trading hub. Its distinctive red-brick façade and quaint surroundings make it a must-see for visitors exploring the city's rich history.

Such a old landmark of the city. Loved to visit it!

There is a little cafe hosted by the Phenomenta called Cafe Lights out (licht los). It's run entirely by blind people. The whole upper parts is dark, so you can't see, just like the blind people. It's an experience and the cake there is amazing. It's really worth going at least once! The down side is that it has a pretty long line sometimes to get into the cafe. So bring time when you go!
Lainey A — Google review
Some might say, once you cross this gate, your stepping into the real north. For me it's like stepping from the shopping wonderland of Flensburg Downtown, into the other Flensburg, where you can find a huge variety of Flensburgers from all over the world. If you are just here for tourism, this would be the place to start our end your little walk around the centre of Flensburg.

Yes, it is Nice to come once to see how it was before to prepare ships, you can see all working inviroment and also you can enjoy some drinks. Sometimes you can be lucky and to attend a interteiment there. But anyway it is for a very short time, I think 15 minutes would be enough to visit this place

€1 entry per person. Small partly outdoor museum with some very old and historic ships/ ship parts. It's not very well kept and doesn't look like a museum (with less information boards and organisation). However, for a euro, it's worth the visit.

Flensburg Harbor GmbH holds great historical significance for the coastal city of Flensburg, with a rich trading history dating back to the 18th century. The harbor has been visited by notable ships like Santiano's and offers picturesque views of the shipyard in the fjord. Visitors can explore the charming old town, central church, and vibrant market square. While some areas may not be aesthetically pleasing, the harbor remains an attractive destination for ship enthusiasts with its diverse offerings.
We love to go here and stroll around. Fresh air and great views of not only the ocean but also a lot of boats and ships in all shapes and sizes.

Wine bar
Restaurant
Located in Flensburg, Die Weinstube im Krusehof is a popular wine bar that not only offers a selection of exquisite wines but also serves delicious flammkuchen on wooden boards. With its old house charm and low ceilings, this establishment guarantees cozy hours for visitors. During the summer, the outdoor seating areas are particularly favored, providing a pleasant atmosphere to enjoy one's wine in the mild air.
Traditional Alsatian cuisine, friendly staff, good location and perfect atmosphere.

Such a cute restaurant. Old styled (remembers my granny's house). Food was delicious, the flammakuchen was the best. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
Shri K — Google review
Nice and cosy restaurant at the end of a small old fashion alley. The menu mainly offers a selection of flammkuchen, but these are also well made and quite delicious. Good selection among beers, cocktails, and coffee. Very charming atmosphere, with a hint of ancient times. The restaurant do not take reservations, but if there is a short wait, have a beer and relax on the seats outside, while gazing through the deliteful menu options. Great service, highly recommended.

This is a charming restaurant in a small alley. Not recommended for people with walking difficulties as the bathroom is upstairs using a step staircase.
BB — Google review
Let me say this first; GREAT flammkuchen in a GREAT place. We both ordered the ‘original’ one with onions and bacon, and it was tasty and lovely. The old building gave a fairytale-like atmosphere. If only rated on this - it would be five stars and not three. But… The place was busy (which is a good sign), and of course they kept on taking people in. However it took ages for the food to arrive. 45 minutes after we ordered it. A very long wait, especially because the premises were extremely cold to sit in. Heard several people talking about it too, so we were not the only non-penguins in there. A shame for such an, otherwise, lovely place.
Marlene K — Google review
Lovely little hidden gem. Good wine, nice garlic bread (other snacks looked delicious as well) but mostly a super cosy atmosphere!

Steak house
The Gnomenkeller, believed to have been built in 1583 as a wine cellar, now houses the restaurant Porterhouse. Here, surrounded by wall and mural paintings, you can enjoy succulent steaks from the lava grill. The menu also offers fresh and hearty international cuisine with delightful vegetarian options. Located in Flensburg (Hohlwege), the Porterhouse in Gnomenkeller is a popular destination for gatherings with friends or family. It provides accessibility for individuals with limited mobility.
A very cozy and lovely place with fantastic food! The staff is very professional, friendly and kind! I highly recommend that you book a table here and enjoy their amazing food! You won't regret it! 😀
Tony K — Google review
The beef was wonderful. I ordered "blue" and received blue. They have escargot, which is surprising as we're so far north in Germany. This basement restaurant is a comfortable little place, however... A salad buffet. Don't judge a book by its cover. For a restaurant with a buffet, they have good food. I choked on my drink, and was immediately served a water. That should tell you how the staff are like. It almost feels overstaffed? Accommodation was frighteningly fast. (The menu is a little flashy, even for my taste. Describing the different cuts of beef word-for-word as stated on it's respective Wikipedia page is a bit... Distasteful?)
Callmepease1 — Google review
Porterhouse im Gnomenkeller is a nice restaurant with a vaulted ceiling painted to give the impression that it is made of bricks. The walls and ceilings feature paintings and attractive designs. There's a date, 1586, painted on the wall. According to the waiter, the building dates back to that year. The quality of the food is good, and the service is quite satisfactory. I had Scholle, a type of flatfish, for 27.50 EUR, and a small beer (0.31 L) for 5.00 EUR, bringing the total to 32.50 EUR. At the bottom of the receipt, it states, “Tip is not included.” I paid with a card, and the waiter brought to my attention four large squares on the screen of the card reader where I could choose a tip in addition to 32.50 EUR. If I chose the first square, a 5% tip would be included. If I chose the subsequent squares, the tip would increase by 10%, 15%, etc. At the bottom, in small text, was “No tip.” When I chose “no tip,” the waiter continued to be kind, friendly, and professional. However, I’m quite sure many people would find being asked to consider giving a tip to be highly intimidating. It is not my responsibility to subsidize the restaurant employees' salaries. People working in restaurants in Germany are generally well-paid.
Ridanos P — Google review
This place has a very unique atmosphere because of the arched ceiling with different gnomes painted on it. The food os very delicious and the service is top notch. We'll definitely be back. A piece of advice, if you order and XXL steak be aware that you can ask for 2 x 200 that way the last bit won't be too dry.
Kevin S — Google review
don't order their béarnaise sauce here. they get 2 stars. 1 for the place, it's super cozy and 1 for the steak, it was nicely tender. back to the bearnaise sauce it had no taste of bearnaise at all. when they ask and we are satisfied with the food, we mention the béarnaise sauce is inedible, they respond with a no. another waiter asks about the pond when we finish eating. we say the same and feed the waiter ril to taste. the waiter answers yes yes and we hear no more. their salad was just limited and with wrinkled tomatoes because they had been there too long. a very disappointing experience. the place does not get a recommendation from me.

Restaurant Review: "Porterhouse im Gnomenkeller" – A Hidden Gem for Steak Lovers Tucked away in a charming, labyrinthine cellar in the heart of the old town, "Porterhouse im Gnomenkeller" offers more than just a meal – it delivers a memorable dining experience steeped in character and flavor. The moment you step inside, you're transported into a cozy, almost magical world: vaulted stone ceilings, warm ambient lighting, dark wood furnishings, and whimsical details that live up to the "Gnome Cellar" name. It’s rustic and atmospheric without ever feeling overdone – a unique and inviting setting. The service is friendly, witty, and clearly passionate about what they do. The staff took time to walk us through the different cuts and cooking styles, even presenting the raw meat tableside for those who wanted a closer look – a nice touch that shows their dedication to quality. We went with the signature Porterhouse steak, ordered medium rare – and it was spot on. Beautifully seared on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside, with a deep, rich flavor that speaks of excellent sourcing and expert grilling. The ribeye was equally impressive: well-marbled, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The sides didn’t disappoint either. The truffle fries were crisp and aromatic, and the creamed spinach was silky and well-seasoned – clearly made with care. Their wine list leans towards bold reds, perfectly suited to a hearty steak, and the staff gave thoughtful pairing suggestions. For dessert, we finished with a warm chocolate lava cake and vanilla ice cream – a classic done right, with a gooey center and just the right sweetness. Verdict: "Porterhouse im Gnomenkeller" is a true find. With top-quality meat, excellent service, and an unforgettable setting, it’s a must-visit for steak enthusiasts and anyone looking to enjoy a special night out. Pro tip: Reservations are highly recommended – this hidden gem is no longer a well-kept secret.

This place is great. Take no mistake. The restaurant has great atmosphere, the service is wonderful and the food and vine is great. We had a plate with 3 different kind of meat from grill and a pepper steak, ummmm just great. We waited only 10 minutes. I would have waited much longer with no problem because I had a 0,5 ltr of the house vine a d it tastit great. They have a long list of house vine and it has a great price. The service was excellent. If you have the chance, take it. If I should complain about anything, it would be about finding the place. It was not easy.

We had the Mittagessen on Sunday when we visited Flensburg. The place is in the city center but not in the crowded pedestrian street. So there is a privacy. The food was delicious and with the price we paid, it is worth it and affordable. The waiter was very nice and always make sure that we enjoyed the food. For sure, I recommend this restaurant for people who visit Flensburg 😊

Nestled in the heart of Flensburg, the Alte Senfmühle is a charming steakhouse that has transformed from its origins as a sauerkraut and vinegar factory into a delightful dining destination. This cozy eatery offers an impressive array of dishes, including schnitzel, steaks, North Sea fish, pasta, and burgers—ensuring there's something to satisfy every palate. We had lunch here this afternoon, and the food was phenomenal! The chili, coconut, & banana soup was mind-blowing! And the Mediterranean shrimp platter was divine. Add in excellent service and atmosphere, and third place is a winner. The staff was very friendly and helpful especially since we didn't speak German. We will definitely be back on our next trip!

Took over 45 minutes to get the food, portion was small and the staff Very! friendly but not so able 🫠 After 15 minutes asked again what we ordered etc.. Also forgot some drink. Also very pricey, can get at Sylt Gosch tripple of this meal for the same price with much better view. Maybe it was just a coincedence of Saturday + some unluck.

Indian restaurant
Himalaya Indisk Restaurant in Flensburg offers a cozy setting with polished decor, serving traditional Indian dishes like chicken tikka masala, chicken korma, and palak paneer. The restaurant also caters to vegans with a variety of options. Guests praise the friendly staff and the generous portions of food. Additionally, the restaurant provides a vegetarian and vegan buffet that has received positive feedback for its lovely atmosphere and great taste.
Awesome place. We didn’t have a reservation but still the friendly waitress found a nice corner for us. We asked for authentic beef biryani and this is what you get. Rich, true Indian flavors in a beautiful atmosphere with friendly staff and cozy surroundings. Plenty of options for both vegans, vegetarians and meat eaters. Cleanliness is also top and the portions are really generous, my wife couldn’t finish and was offered to take the food home. First class service. Can only recommend this restaurant. Thank you so much for this nice experience!

A really wonderful restaurant. The food is amazing, can control the spiciness of every dish, as well as choose the combination of dish and meat. Finally a place where garlic naan tastes like garlic (apparently it's a lot to ask for in other restaurants).

Amazing food Really tastefull! We went for their lunch deal, Had butter chicken and palak vegetarian Coke + fanta for 26.80€ The food was really tastefull, you can choose from different spice levels, and there was to much for us to eat so we asked for the rest as take away, they even gave us extra rice for the take away for free

The atmosphere is comfortable and the staff is welcoming, nice and helpful. The food is mediocre, definitely not the best Indian cuisine I’ve ever tasted but it is good. I had the butter chicken which was okay but a little bland. I generally wished the food was a little spicier… the drinks are fine too!
Reveravecria — Google review
Visited it on a weekday afternoon. Good staff and atmosphere overall. Rice and naan was well prepared and didn't took a long time to get my order. Only disappointment was artificial 'looking' and scary red - panner kadhai. It tasted okay 3.5/5 but had a lot of food coloring which in my opinion Indian food don't need.
Aditya P — Google review
A really fabulous little place just a stone’s throw from the main shopping area of the city. We were lucky to get a table for two without a reservation as the restaurant is obviously popular. The atmosphere was very friendly and welcoming and the staff attentive to the many guests. We ordered papadums and pakora for starters and chicken Madras and chicken Karahi as main courses. Everything was tasteful and was as spicy as promised. You are asked how spicy you’d like it to be. We have only good things to say about this restaurant and would love to return.
Marlene K — Google review
Very good food. We ordered the appetiser with a selection of different items and it was very good. It also comes with different sauces which was great. We drank the Lassie, which was very tasty. Our main course was lamb, which was also cooked very well. It was spicy, so you have to make sure you select the right spicy level for you. All in all, it was one of the best meals we had in Flensburg.
