The Etruscan Museum "Mario Guarnacci" has a rich history, dating back to 1761 when Mario Guarnacci donated his archaeological collection to the city of Volterra. This generous donation included a vast library and unique works from various centuries. The museum is home to the famous Ombra della Sera sculpture and also houses the Volterra Picture Gallery with masterpieces like Rosso Fiorentino's Deposition.
Since I knew next to nothing about this pre-Roman civilization and was intrigued, the museum was the main attraction I wanted to see in Volterra. However, we almost passed it by as it looked so unimposing on the outside and there didn't seem to be anywhere to park nearby. In fact, there is some parking just 50 yards down the road, with a scenic view. Inside, the museum is very modern and well organized. The displays are beautiful and have more interpretive material than we had seen in some other museums. I highly recommend visiting.

We went there on the Notte Bianca (7/19/2025) when all the museum in the city is free after 21:00. We were the one of the first into the museum when it opened at 21:00 and we’re the only ones on the second floor where the famous sculptures are. Really cool experience to be able to explore a museum at night with so little people and being able to see the artifacts up close without being rushed by other tourists. Really recommend going on a Notte Bianca.

For lovers of Etruscan history, and for those just learning about the importance of the Etruscans, this museum is superb. From funerary uns, to bronze sculptures, to amazing household artifacts, this museum has it all. We spent over 2 hours inside and loved every minute. Plus, a huge bonus for us were the several beautiful (but covered) mosaic floors! Such a great museum!
Dax P — Google review
Amazing museum. Amidst all the Roman ruins in Italy, the Etruscans often get overlooked. This museum has a ton of artifacts from the Etruscans -- older than the Roman empire and incredibly well preserved. The signage is mostly bilingual. Where it's only available in Italian, staff were willing to give us an explanation in English.
Ari E — Google review
We'd read the reviews and were conflicted. Is this another old museum? NO. This is THE presentation of Etruscan life. The museum has undergone an amazing upgrade thanks to the EU. Ok, there are a couple of rooms with exhibits that are dated. But the rest are great. Seems a major project has occurred in 2025. Information is presented in Italian and English. The new displays are classy. We knew nothing about Etruscan culture. Now we know a bit more. Worth a visit for sure

An intriguing museum that was the surprise highlight of our visit to Volterra! Just visible on a distant hilltop, Volterra was pointed out to us by a local winery owner as a city we needed to visit because of its place in Tuscan history and its unique cultural artifacts - the burial urns of the Etruscans and its Roman theater. We didn't know much more than that, but we knew enough to trust when someone recommends something to us with nothing to gain for themselves, and we couldn't be happier we followed that instinct. This is one of those amazing museums that makes you want to continue to learn more even after you leave!
Daniel P — Google review
This Museum contains a beautiful collection of sarcophagi and other Etruscan tools. Very interesting, and definitely worth a visit. Having an elevator, it is accessible and comfortable, too. Still, the museum lacks modernity: there is no introduction to the Etruscans, and being unprepared it takes a while to understand what the exhibition is all about. Doesn‘t matter, maybe, when there are plenty of guards, as in this museum. You could simply ask, couldn‘t you? Unfortunately, the guards I talked to also couldn‘t explain the Etruscans, too. Thus, 3 stars. But hey, just a video intro and a little bit of tutoring and us visitors would all be set, wouldn‘t we?
Jan B — Google review
This museum is a must see if you’re in Volterra, as it shines a bright light on the Etruscan (pre-Roman) civilisation. The collection is somewhat uneven - there are some sections which look as if they’re still awaiting reorganisation and improved explanatory notices, and there are more funerary urns than most people need, but the most important sections are well laid out and explained, and include some fascinating and beautiful items, such as the very extended figure of a young man, and even some of the funerary urns! Highly recommended.

Ran into on a side street in Volterra, Italy. Very inexpensive to visit. Staff is great! Very interesting place! Brings you back in time to a luxurious home.

Nice collection and location but I’m shocked by the fact that this place is cash ONLY and they also accept donations… the audacity! The printed 'guides' must be at least 10 years old: just three stapled pages with inaccurate translations. Personally, in 2025, I think it’s time the owners consider an upgrade

(Translated by Google) Piazza dei Priori, with its cluster of noble palaces, is evidence of Volterra's rich medieval heritage. It is dominated by the towering Palazzo dei Priori (1208), the oldest town hall in Tuscany, and is said to have been modeled after Florence's Palazzo Vecchio. Although the clock tower and battlements were later remodeled, the building looks like a typical Tuscan town hall. Weather permitting, it's worth climbing to the top of the bell tower for a panoramic view of the city. Across the square stands the 13th-century Palazzo Pretorio, with its battlemented Torre del Porcellino (Little Pig Tower), so named for its decorative relief of a wild boar.

Ristorante Enoteca Del Duca is a hidden gem nestled in a 12th-century building with a charming courtyard garden. The seasonal menu offers a blend of innovative and traditional Italian dishes, curated by the Del Duca family. The restaurant's focus on Tuscan cuisine is complemented by an extensive selection of wines from their own vineyards.
Lovely evening spent with family in Volterra. The restaurant was quiet but welcoming, the food was good, but the whole experience was great because of our host Adrian who was so attentive and knowledgeable. We hope to be back soon.

We were there with a larger group of friends for a birthday dinner. We were greeted with the most friendly staff and a chef who knows his craft. He advised us well on the food, educated us and created an atmosphere that was just special. Prices are more than fair. It feels like we came as guests and left as friends. Chef Fabio made sure we had an evening we will never forget. It was a very intimate and personal experience. From the food to the conversations. The restaurant is very well located, so a little stroll before going there is great. And the hidden away courtyard seating is definitely a highlight. I can only recommend going there if you are on the area!

Wonderful midday meal. We were fortunate that the chef was grilling meats on wood fired grill on the garden patio. The house special sausage was the best we ever had, bursting with flavor. All local, fresh ingredients. Service was top shelf.

The restaurant is beautiful merging with the ancient walls of the city, the garden in the back is an idyllic space. The dishes are beautifully presented. The main dishes were stunning in every sense but the appetisers were lacking flavour therefore the 4* rating.

We visited this wonderful Italian restaurant twice during our vacation — and both times were exceptional! We tried several dishes from the menu, but a few truly stood out and deserve special mention. The beef tartare was incredibly fresh, with some unexpected and creative additions that made it really unique. The veal steak was tender, juicy, and cooked to perfection — one of the best we've ever had. We also couldn’t resist the desserts, which were beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. The service was outstanding on both visits. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made us feel genuinely welcome. Highly recommended if you're looking for a memorable dining experience with top-quality food and warm hospitality. We’ll definitely be back next time we’re in the area!

Everything is amazing here Staff were friendly and helpful. I took their recommendation for a boneless rabbit and panna cotta, they were made so special. The rabbit meat was infused with flavour, the dessert experience was super unique. Highly recommended this Michelin-listed restaurant if you are out for an occasion or visiting with friends and family

We stumbled upon this place while waiting for a walking tour to start. The owner/chef came outside to chat with us in Italian then realized we don’t speak it 😅 he made some self deprecating jokes and his charm had us hooked. It was not quite 12 yet but he said we could come in. Since we just had a moment we got one dish each and an aperol spritz (I know I know it’s cliché, but I swear it was delicious!) the food was delicious, (burrata with fresh truffle and wild boar ragu over pappardelle) the savory puffs he brought out were tasty as well. It felt like a very special experience to have the chef himself take care of us after just happening to come in at that time, and I feel like his level of commitment and love of his craft are definitely what inspire the Michelin stars! I love eating at a restaurant where you can tell the people there love what they do. As we left we waved goodbye to the woman chef who I recognized from their brochure. Thank you for the wonderful hospitality, Del Duca!
Sarah L — Google review
Wonderful lunch experience, fine dining with elevated Italian fare. The seared tuna on burrata cream with apple sorbet was light and refreshing. The white truffle pasta was creamy and rich. And the steak was cooked perfectly in a red wine reduction. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful in pairing wines from the region. Pricey but worth it to splurge.

La Carabaccia is a charming family-owned trattoria located near the Etruscan Museum. The menu changes daily, offering old-fashioned Tuscan recipes reminiscent of homemade meals. Dishes include lamb stew, beef rolled around root vegetables, homemade noodles with minced chicken, and a house specialty vegetable soup. The restaurant also serves local cheese and cured meats to complement the mains. With a friendly atmosphere and affordable prices, it's popular among locals and visitors alike for its authentic Tuscan comfort food.
Delicious casual local style restaurant. Very limited menu that rotates daily and reasonably priced. They have a few typical appetizers and then 2 pastas and 2 main dishes for dinner. We had one of each and they were all delicious. The prosciutto and melon was simple but a great starter. Both pastas were excellent. The main course we stuffed rabbit and guinea fowl. Both were new to us and good. The restaurant has a nice outdoor seating area to enjoy the ancient city and there are a few restaurants with outdoor seating all in that area. I’d definitely recommend sitting outside. Make sure to make a reservation as their is limited seating. Be patient as the staff is a small team so just enjoy your meal and the atmosphere. I will add parking in the area is limited and a bit confusing so if you aren’t already in the area leave some extra time to park and find the restaurant. I read some reviews that it isn’t a good spot for tourists. I don’t agree with that at all. I don’t think you will be able to get a table without a reservation though so that could be why others wrote that. Again definitely would recommend if you’re visiting.

We had a very pleasant time at La Carabaccia. Service was perfect, food very fresh and delicious and atmosphere pleasant. We warmly recommend!
Anastasia S — Google review
Based on the positive reviews and the nice open location of the restaurant in the shadow of the trees we chose to have lunch here. We were lucky enough to still get a seat, since most tables were reserved. We both had a primi and a secondi and our two young children ate along. The pasta and gnocchi were simple but delicious. The secondi were disappointing. The fowl was simple and tasty but almost al bone (ribs and neck) and the boar was a bit dry and served with earthy tasting spinach. Consumed a bottle of water and one glass of house wine and spent 67 euro (incl 10 coperto). Next time would opt for a starter and the primi and stay away from the secondi.

Very nice restaurant in the Volterra city center. From the outside seems a small bar but it's a nice restaurant curated and cozy. We love the fact that they changed the menu every day so ingredients are fresh and delicious. Everything are hand made, we took a peposo and was one of the best in my experience, also gnocchi where very good. To taste the pannacotta with vinsanto reduction. Prices are good consider the center and absolutely normal for the quality. A very good place where eat.

Il Sacco Fiorentino is a family-friendly restaurant in Volterra, offering Tuscan dishes with international influences. Specialties like antipasti del Sacco Fiorentino and tagliatelle del Sacco Fiorentino are popular choices. The restaurant provides excellent service and reasonably priced, tasty dishes, although some patrons found the bread stale. Despite this, it's considered a good dining option in the area.
Amazing restaurant! I came with my family and everything was amazing! The truffle raviolis and the tuscan beef is a must! we had caponata, eggplant parmigiana, caccio peppe! 100% recommended if you come to Volterra!

Perfect evening outside on the terrace. The food was outstanding, I had the zucchini carpaccio with a tofu dressing (had to try), brilliant. I had the Trinka, Pork Chop with spinach and cannellini beans. I very rarely eat pork at a restaurant because it’s often overcooked but this was easily the best pork chop I’ve ever eaten. The service was very friendly and efficient we really enjoyed their professionalism and engagement. The wine suggestion was perfect. We were there last month but the delay is fine, as among the great meals we had in Tuscany this was the standout. We would have eaten there every night if we had stayed longer. Many thanks again. We sat down on a whim for a quick bite, and it turned out to be a very pleasant experience. The staff were super friendly and welcoming. We had pasta (pappardelle) with wild boar ragu and pappardelle with a homemade sauce (which tasted like a kind of Bolognese) and both dishes were excellent!

The owner is very professional and friendly. He greeted us with a smile and offered us glasses of prosecco while getting the table ready. The beef tartare is the best in town. Good selection of wine by the glass and the ingredients are locally sourced and selected with the seasonal best. Our waiter Gora deserves million stars. He is hard working and cheerful.

Really great restaurant, literally the best service we’ve ever gotten in Italy. The waiters are attentive and very kind. The food is amazing and really unique. Our dinner started with a free appetizer. Would recommend going early as the place gets busy quickly. Also amazing bathroom. The outdoors area was nice but a lot of pedestrian traffic and some car traffic so lower rating for that, but the inside seating seems nice!

The Tuscan restaurant Bar Trattoria Da Badò is a great spot to go for a meal if you're in Volterra. The food is delicious, and the staff are lovely. The best thing about this place is that it's easy to get to – it's just outside of the city walls.
We had a wonderful experience. The staff were friendly, very open to explaining the dishes and helpful. We had pork and beef steak there, with potato and vegetables. For dessert we had chocolate cake and lemon ice cream. All very delicious and worth the price. Would like to thank our waiter, for being so experienced at young age. Bravissimo!

Incredible cosy place! My partner and I went to here to have dinner as we were staying in the Chiostro hostel and there aren't many restaurants nearby. I must admit that the service has been superb, and the food too! I've got a mixed salad (which was a big size bowl with lots of fresh veggies), and a minestra Di legumi, which they confirmed it's vegan (doesn't have any eggs, meat or dairy products). I definitely recommend this place :)

We are here a few times while staying in Volterra for our wedding. Food was fantastic and the staff were lovely, even putting up with a large group of us who were all very excited at having arrived from all over the world for the wedding. Would definitely recommend this place if you are in Volterra! Tortelloni in cheese sauce is delicious (my favourite) as is the hare pappardelle and the pici (thick spaghetti) ragu. I didn't try the tripe but I heard good things (if you like that kind of thing!) and the desserts were good too! Really fantastic!

Osteria La Pace in Volterra is a historic restaurant dating back to the 1600s, managed by the same family since 1939. Located inside Volterra's walls near Porta a Selci, it offers a traditional Tuscan dining experience in a vaulted stone room. The menu features regional meats and cheeses, along with robust Tuscan mains made with fresh, seasonal ingredients.
We had a great time at Osteria La Pace - charming staff and generous portions of truly delicious food. Two days later, we’re going back - for pasta with cinghiale (wild boar) steaming in a metal saucepan and gnocchi with a layer of truffle shavings, yummy!!!!

Incredibly nice and patient people. The pici cianghale was the best I’ve had in Italy, and I try it everywhere! We had the Pappa Selci which was something new and a great surprise, delicious! The tiramisu…thought I had died and gone to Tiramisu heaven floating the clouds! The cream is so light and silky and the soak was a perfect balance with a pretty good coffee punch, which is what I want in a tiramisu! We would eat here again and again, and probably will before we leave!

A great traditional restaurant in Volterra. We tried a pasta dish with wild boar and a seasonal porcini mushroom lasagna recommended by the waiter. The atmosphere was calm and not touristy at all. Unfortunately, we couldn’t try the chocolate dessert as it had already run out. Other than that, the service was excellent and the atmosphere very pleasant. The lasagna was the best we had during the entire trip, and the wild boar sauce surprised us with its rich flavor and tender meat. We would definitely go back!

Recommend to me and did not disappoint. Was the best meal i have had so far in a month in Italy. I had a Caprese salad the Strozzapretti al Chinghale and Lemoncello Spritz. The Chinghale was phenomenal so tasty and rich. Complimentary Lemoncello shots to finish dinner. The family run business staff were friendly and I felt at home even dining solo. Authentic Tuscan food with no pretension. Ill be back even if it means making a trip out of my way to visit the magical town of Volterra again. Belissimo!

Very friendly and incredibly fast- our order came in less than 10 minutes. The dishes were all authentic home cooked style and decent priced. The tiramisu was the best.

This restaurant is simply amazing. The best pasta with ragù I’ve ever had in my life!

On top of this stars, just pass the gate and here you are in one of the oldest, traditional restaurants in the whole of Volterra where you simply have to true the Tuscan pasta with wild boar 🐗
