The Roman Theatre in Volterra is a well-preserved ancient complex that includes a theater and thermal plant, featuring excavated columns and mosaics. Discovered in the 1950s, this large Imperial period theater is one of the best-preserved examples in Italy. The semi-circular seating was built directly into the hill, with radial stairways still visible today. The orchestra area at the foot of the benches once hosted high-ranking spectators.
Impressive ruins, hard to believe they were built over 2,000 years ago. Not much to walk around but a good view of all there is, with some information too. Included in the Volterra card or 10€ entry

Fascinating historical amphitheatre. Used as a medieaval rubbish tip and then buried 100 metres beneath a football field.
Richard L — Google review
It wasnt open due to siesta, us and a lot of other tourists would just go around to the front and take pictures. It was fine seeing it just from the front, i wouldnt have been happy to have paid to go in. If it would be free it would be better

A well preserved ruins of the past, now modernly converted to a concert and theatre stage. Beautiful and scenic route for a walk to enjoy the mediaeval city.

The Roman Theatre in Volterra is a truly impressive spot to visit. Even without knowing much about history, you can feel the atmosphere of the place when standing among the ruins and looking at the old stone seats and stage area. The setting is quiet, scenic, and gives you a sense of stepping back in time. It’s one of those places where you can slow down, take in the view, and imagine what life here was like centuries ago. Definitely a highlight when exploring Volterra and worth including in your visit.

Amazing town , this is my 3rd time back and loving it. So underrated and is free of Insta crowds. Refreshing and cute , best of hand made Etruscan pieces and alabaster.
Cb B — Google review
€23 to see some ruins is a joke. You can have a better view from the wall above it and that view is free of charge. I have recently visited an ancient Greek amphitheatre in Taormina for €14. That is a much better preserved site for less.
Chris K — Google review
Amazing to see! Don’t buy a ticket from the top you can see as much or even more then if you would buy a ticket. It’s also quite hot to be walking down there.

Ran into on a side street in Volterra, Italy. Very inexpensive to visit. Staff is great! Very interesting place! Brings you back in time to a luxurious home.

Nice collection and location but I’m shocked by the fact that this place is cash ONLY and they also accept donations… the audacity! The printed 'guides' must be at least 10 years old: just three stapled pages with inaccurate translations. Personally, in 2025, I think it’s time the owners consider an upgrade

La Sosta del Priore, located at Vicolo delle Prigioni 2, is renowned for its delicious sandwiches and street food. The place also offers a sit-down area where you can enjoy their produce along with your meal. It's advisable to arrive early as the small shop tends to get crowded after 1:00 pm. The friendly staff are known for their patience and helpfulness in guiding customers through the selection of extra items that complement the flavors of each sandwich.
Lunch in Volterra!! This is a terrific option for lunch in Volterra! The panini are made to order with fresh, good quality ingredients and the service is super friendly. The prices are very reasonable too!!

WOW! What a DELICIOUS SANDWICH!!!!! This place is a true gem and the family that runs it are kind and happy. They offer so many sandwich combinations it was difficult to choose! They have vegetables like grilled eggplant, zucchini, sauted red & yellow peppers, carmelized onions, and marinated local tomatoes- just to name a few- and a large selection of local Tuscan meats, cheeses and breads. The roll I chose super authentic and crusty and the filling was such a generous portion that I could have been satisfied without the bread! They also have a wonderful selection of beer and wine including delicious quality craft beers that are brewed right here in Volterra! Id actually eat here again and I don’t even like sandwiches! June 30, 2025 the sandwich was 💶9 and the lovely local craft beer was 💶6. Yummmmmm

Tasty sandwiches! The shop itself is quite small, but there’s a pleasant, cozy seating area just across the street. Prices are a little on the higher side, but the quality makes it worth it. Service is great. The staff keep everything clean and even help carry your sandwiches over to the seating area. A nice spot for a good lunch.

If you're passing through Volterra, I highly recommend checking this place out. They serve hearty, authentic, and freshly prepared sandwiches. A great stop for those who want to savor a local tradition in a sandwich, whether to eat in or take away. The service is incredibly friendly and helpful. Highly recommended!

Super tasty sandwiches!! The fillings are so delicious and so nicely combined. The lady taking the orders was also super friendly. There is a small space in front of the shop where you can eat your sandwich.

Tuscan restaurant
Ristorante Enoteca Del Duca is a hidden gem nestled in a 12th-century building with a charming courtyard garden. The seasonal menu offers a blend of innovative and traditional Italian dishes, curated by the Del Duca family. The restaurant's focus on Tuscan cuisine is complemented by an extensive selection of wines from their own vineyards.
Lovely evening spent with family in Volterra. The restaurant was quiet but welcoming, the food was good, but the whole experience was great because of our host Adrian who was so attentive and knowledgeable. We hope to be back soon.

We were there with a larger group of friends for a birthday dinner. We were greeted with the most friendly staff and a chef who knows his craft. He advised us well on the food, educated us and created an atmosphere that was just special. Prices are more than fair. It feels like we came as guests and left as friends. Chef Fabio made sure we had an evening we will never forget. It was a very intimate and personal experience. From the food to the conversations. The restaurant is very well located, so a little stroll before going there is great. And the hidden away courtyard seating is definitely a highlight. I can only recommend going there if you are on the area!

Wonderful midday meal. We were fortunate that the chef was grilling meats on wood fired grill on the garden patio. The house special sausage was the best we ever had, bursting with flavor. All local, fresh ingredients. Service was top shelf.
Anthony G — Google review
The restaurant is beautiful merging with the ancient walls of the city, the garden in the back is an idyllic space. The dishes are beautifully presented. The main dishes were stunning in every sense but the appetisers were lacking flavour therefore the 4* rating.

We visited this wonderful Italian restaurant twice during our vacation — and both times were exceptional! We tried several dishes from the menu, but a few truly stood out and deserve special mention. The beef tartare was incredibly fresh, with some unexpected and creative additions that made it really unique. The veal steak was tender, juicy, and cooked to perfection — one of the best we've ever had. We also couldn’t resist the desserts, which were beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. The service was outstanding on both visits. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made us feel genuinely welcome. Highly recommended if you're looking for a memorable dining experience with top-quality food and warm hospitality. We’ll definitely be back next time we’re in the area!

Everything is amazing here Staff were friendly and helpful. I took their recommendation for a boneless rabbit and panna cotta, they were made so special. The rabbit meat was infused with flavour, the dessert experience was super unique. Highly recommended this Michelin-listed restaurant if you are out for an occasion or visiting with friends and family
Lo C — Google review
Amazing food and ambience. The outside seating and service was spectacular. I had wild boar pappardelle for first course and it was the best pasta dish I’ve had since coming to Italy! Main course was boneless rabbit - incredible. They even had an Italian singer who set the mood and played both Italian and old school rock/pop music which made for an even better pairing with the wine and food! We all had a blast and cannot wait to come back one day.
Danny L — Google review
We stumbled upon this place while waiting for a walking tour to start. The owner/chef came outside to chat with us in Italian then realized we don’t speak it 😅 he made some self deprecating jokes and his charm had us hooked. It was not quite 12 yet but he said we could come in. Since we just had a moment we got one dish each and an aperol spritz (I know I know it’s cliché, but I swear it was delicious!) the food was delicious, (burrata with fresh truffle and wild boar ragu over pappardelle) the savory puffs he brought out were tasty as well. It felt like a very special experience to have the chef himself take care of us after just happening to come in at that time, and I feel like his level of commitment and love of his craft are definitely what inspire the Michelin stars! I love eating at a restaurant where you can tell the people there love what they do. As we left we waved goodbye to the woman chef who I recognized from their brochure. Thank you for the wonderful hospitality, Del Duca!

The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, also known as the Cathedral of Volterra, is a stunning example of Romanesque and Baroque architecture. Constructed over six centuries from the 12th to the 18th century, this cathedral boasts a simple yet elegant facade and an interior adorned with beautifully painted coffered ceilings and numerous works of art.
Hidden in a quiet corner of Volterra, and rebuilt after the earthquake of 1117 that destroyed most of the town. Amongst the various artistic masterpieces kept inside the Cathedral, the five polychrome sculptures carved out of wood portraying the “Deposition of Christ from the Cross” certainly stand out. Worth a visit.
Jo G — Google review
My wife and I enjoyed visiting the cathedral. Current cost is 7EUR/person and includes a great audio guide with approximately 15 stations. Each station on the audio guide provides about two minutes of information - total audio guide is 34 minutes long. The audio guide is outstanding - you must download it to your smart phone after scanning a QR code given to you after purchasing a ticket. The audio guide is as good, if not better, than several walking tour guides we have taken for substantially more cost. The ticket to cathedral offers each person a 2EUR discount to visit Palazzo Viti (5EUR instead of 7EUR). The cathedral is not a component of the Volterra Card. Again, great audio guide that brings to life the many great paintings and sculptures within the cathedral.
Joseph H — Google review
Church is nice outside…..but you have to pay to enter a church….and this is not acceptable in Italy
Manucsn — Google review
Not worth going inside at a high price of 16 euro per adult. I would suggest walking past it and going to the edge of the city where you can get some amazing views of the areas surrounding Volterra and it will cost you nothing. Since the city is not too large you can go see it, but in my opinion it's not a must-see at all.
Robin L — Google review
Pay 7 euro and enter to the cathedral church!!! I entered and is beautiful. Now it's run by a private association. Iis it good to use Church for income? I don't know... Interesting. 🤣😂. Whoever built this Church had never thought of this way 🤣😂. But at least they should allow if anyone asks for a sec for prayers. Even if they are tricky. Show them that the Church never asks you money to pray. I could see that someone came and asked them 2 minutes for prayers. Unfortunately they couldn't. Because no money no pray. I had 7 euro so I could pray and visit. I have visited many churches in Italy, but this was strange.🤭. Do really the bishop knows about it that his cathedral entrance is under ticket only?
Taison M — Google review
Lucky enough to have visited 2 days after its been reopened! Stunning paintings and statues. Elegant and rich marble floor. A new altar is designed to get visitors attention once entered.

Nestled at the highest point of Volterra, the Parco Archeologico Enrico Fiumi is a treasure trove of history that beautifully showcases Etruscan remains intertwined with Roman and Medieval artifacts. This expansive park features remarkable structures such as an ancient water cistern, plumbing systems, and two temples dating back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC.
We had a great time during the 1398 festivals. It is really the money worth and I would pay more now! Look at the pictures and enjoy. Your "back in time" and can be done for the less walkers under us.

Not much to see here. You can pay for admission or just walk along the street above for a better vantage point.
Josh M — Google review
Nice park with free admission. There is fenced Etruscan acropolis on the top where you can see bases of ancient buildings. And also pretty big playground for children ;-)
Jan Č — Google review
Nice quiet public park, hidden away at the top of the town. A little overgrown but clean enough and a welcome break from the bustle of the main tourist parts of the town. Opportunity to visit the ruins for a small fee. Trees in the area hide the best views of the countryside below but plenty of shady places to sit and relax after the walk up there. Beware that the main ascent from the town is quiet steep (but do-able).

Fascinating piece of Roman history. It won't take more than thirty minutes to admire the cistern and temples. You could rush and do it in a few minutes if you needed to. But what wonderful preserved pierces of history. Worth the €5 or so each. If you are in the area it's a must do.

The Porta all'Arco is a medieval walled city gate in the small town of Atri, northern Italy. The gate was built in the 12th century, and it once served as one of the main entrances into Atri from the outside world. Today, the gate is a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful views and peaceful walk.

We went there with a very good guide. She explained the history and what the wall endured during thousands of years. Beatiful views also.
Nubei L — Google review
The Porta all’Arco is one of the most remarkable remnants of Volterra’s Etruscan heritage. Built in the 4th century BC, the gateway impresses with its massive stone blocks and the mysterious, weathered heads above the arch, whose meaning is still debated. Walking through it gives a real sense of stepping back in time. Its story is not only ancient: during World War II, the citizens of Volterra bravely protected the gate from destruction by filling it with stones, preserving it for future generations. A short stop is enough to admire the structure, but for anyone interested in history and architecture, it is an absolute must-see in Volterra.

Le Cantine del Palazzo is a unique dining experience located in the ancient cellars beneath Palazzo Incontri-Viti. The restaurant offers a cavern-like atmosphere with Roman cisterns and an Etruscan well, providing a fascinating setting for enjoying typical Tuscan specialties at reasonable prices. Guests can also dine outdoors and enjoy a stunning view over the valley while savoring delicious dishes such as bruschetta, homemade pasta, hare, and wild boar.
Excellent fresh pasta. Mine, sage-filled ravioli with a butter sauce and my husband's, a type of long pasta with Tuscan ragu sauce. The chocolate dessert was heavenly, very light and not over-sweetened. Ditto for the orange and cointreau confection. Very kind, patient owner who paired a lovely wine with the meal. Highly recommend this restaurant.

The food was ok, the prices are also ok for this type of restaurant. They have nice area with the tables to see beautiful view. The place was not overcrowded and was calm for the dinner
Olga D — Google review
We were here for several meals while staying at the Hotel San Lino. Since the hotel restaurant was not open and our reservations included dinner, we had to eat at Le Cantine del Palazzo. We were not impressed. As a San Lino guest, you have a different, very limited, menu. (A photo of the menu was not accepted by google for the review—not sure why). When we asked if water or wine was included in the fixed menu, the host, who spoke fluent english, told us 'whatever you want'. At the end of the meal we discovered it is not included. Overall we were not impressed by the quality or choice of the food options. The next time we were at the restaurant, we asked if we could just have a credit toward the regular menu. That was ok, but they charged more than the difference in price of what was on the limited menu and the price of the choices on the regular menu. On that night we had a very good pizza and excellent desserts. Overall, better NOT to get half board at Hotel San Lino and take your money to a different restaurant for dinner.

The care of food is terrific here. Best cannellini beans I’ve ever had, and upon conversation with the cook, it’s due to how they prepare their olive oil over several hours. This gets the garlic flavor into the oil without toasting the garlic. Very rich flavor added to perfectly cooked beans.

Very nice and cozy Italian place serving only Tuscany dishes. Good prices. It's not very fast, but the dishes came out excellent, the pasta was extremely well cooked.

We found this restaurant just walking around and we liked the menu, but we didn’t enjoy the food. The truffle pasta was tiny and not tasty, bread and oil wasn’t tasty either... we left a but disappointed as it was quite pricy. The staff and restaurant were nice though. Maybe we didn’t choose the right option. Ah, Menu si not in english so it’s a bit difficult to guess what is everything.

We sat at a table with the most beautiful view. The bruschetta was the most delicious we have ever tasted, tomatoes, garlic, black pepper, balsamic but incredible olive oil. The home made pasta was melt in your mouth amazing. We chose hare and wild bore. The house wine was just perfect and extremely reasonably priced. I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough for anyone who is looking for an authentic Italian meal in a stunning setting. ( only 2 tables have this view)

La Vecchia Lira is a family-run restaurant located in the heart of Volterra, offering classic Tuscan meat, fish, and pasta dishes. The restaurant prides itself on preparing true Italian recipes with seasonal ingredients from local producers. During lunch hours, it provides a self-service option for quick high-quality meals. It's popular among locals as a cheap lunch spot during the day and transforms into a fancier restaurant at night. The eatery offers an extensive wine list to complement its menu.
The best pasta I’ve ever had! We had an amazing dinner at this restaurant in Volterra. I ordered the truffle pasta — hands down the best I’ve ever tasted. We also had pici with local beef ragù and shared some ravioli, all absolutely delicious. Tiramisu was great too. A special mention to the manager in charge of the dining room, incredibly kind, welcoming and attentive, which made the experience even better. The rest of the staff was also lovely and professional :) Important: make a reservation! Most tables are for four and aren’t split, so even if it looks like there’s space, you’ll likely be turned away without a booking

We found this restaurant by chance while walking through Volterra because it looked so inviting from the outside – and it was such a great choice! The food came out incredibly fast and everything was very, very delicious. The house wine was excellent, and the service was just as great – super friendly and attentive. Definitely a place we’d come back to 😍

We ordered the chianina tartare with low-temperature egg and lemon zest and the taste and the quality of the meat were amazing. We also had the Pici cacio e pepe which were really good and the handmade Tortelli with duck filling which we would totally recommend trying. The decoration might be not their highlight but honestly the food is so good we didn’t care at all.

Great restaurant for a good price. Walked in for lunch, immediately greeted and shown to a table. Place was absolutely packed and only 1 table was left, so book if you can. Ordered bruschetta as a starter (comes with 5 slices and olive oil), papperdele with wild boar ragu, pick with tomato/garlic sauce, burger (made with local meat) and a wild boar stew. All the meats tasted fantastic, honestly one of the best of my life. If you're a vegetarian the tomato pasta was pretty good but meat is definitely the best. From what we had, it definitely deserves 5 stars. 0 complaints.

Best local place with local people and lots of fun! Great vibe!

It’s a good quick pick if you have come to see the village Volterra. Located right at the entry of the village. Tasty sandwiches and croissants.

If you're looking for the worst Panini in all of Volterra, you've come to the right place. Two of the three ladies who work the counter can't be bothered to even make eye contact - number three (the youngest) was nice.

€8 for 2 Coke Zero (warm) served with ice. Reasonable atmosphere. Recommend going elsewhere.

Nice place to relax in the evening, the "Americano" is perfect and the free pizza tasted delicious, they even had a DJ outside ... we love that place!

I love this place! Spacious Café with lots of little snacks and great cappuccinos. There is a whole big downstairs game room. And as a sidenote, I tripped over my own feet and spilled an entire cappuccino. My mug shattered. My croissant went flying. I was so embarrassed, but the manager was so nice about it, and deflected three or four offers from me to help clean up. They brought me a brand new croissant, and cappuccino. Will definitely be back!!

Great atmosphere, especially in yhe evenings with music. Good for breakfasts, with table service the norm. Just grab a table and a waiter will come to take your order!

Restaurant
Il Sacco Fiorentino is a family-friendly restaurant in Volterra, offering Tuscan dishes with international influences. Specialties like antipasti del Sacco Fiorentino and tagliatelle del Sacco Fiorentino are popular choices. The restaurant provides excellent service and reasonably priced, tasty dishes, although some patrons found the bread stale. Despite this, it's considered a good dining option in the area.
Amazing restaurant! I came with my family and everything was amazing! The truffle raviolis and the tuscan beef is a must! we had caponata, eggplant parmigiana, caccio peppe! 100% recommended if you come to Volterra!

Perfect evening outside on the terrace. The food was outstanding, I had the zucchini carpaccio with a tofu dressing (had to try), brilliant. I had the Trinka, Pork Chop with spinach and cannellini beans. I very rarely eat pork at a restaurant because it’s often overcooked but this was easily the best pork chop I’ve ever eaten. The service was very friendly and efficient we really enjoyed their professionalism and engagement. The wine suggestion was perfect. We were there last month but the delay is fine, as among the great meals we had in Tuscany this was the standout. We would have eaten there every night if we had stayed longer. Many thanks again. Delicious food here, we really enjoyed the pici all’aglio and the carbonara with mushrooms. Tiramisu is also a must have. Service was fantastic, our server Gora was friendly and accommodating for our group of 20 for a late lunch on a Wednesday afternoon.

The staff were very nice and friendly. We had a small incident, but they did their best to make it right. I will never forget this place.

We sat down on a whim for a quick bite, and it turned out to be a very pleasant experience. The staff were super friendly and welcoming. We had pasta (pappardelle) with wild boar ragu and pappardelle with a homemade sauce (which tasted like a kind of Bolognese) and both dishes were excellent!

The owner is very professional and friendly. He greeted us with a smile and offered us glasses of prosecco while getting the table ready. The beef tartare is the best in town. Good selection of wine by the glass and the ingredients are locally sourced and selected with the seasonal best. Our waiter Gora deserves million stars. He is hard working and cheerful.

Really great restaurant, literally the best service we’ve ever gotten in Italy. The waiters are attentive and very kind. The food is amazing and really unique. Our dinner started with a free appetizer. Would recommend going early as the place gets busy quickly. Also amazing bathroom. The outdoors area was nice but a lot of pedestrian traffic and some car traffic so lower rating for that, but the inside seating seems nice!

A nice restaurant with a cozy outdoor area. The server was polite and attentive, the food was impeccable. We managed to try the famous Fiorentina steak here, which they prepare very well, we got a 1.6 kg slice of meat.
