Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Shiroishi Castle is a restored 16th-century castle known for its armor and weapons displays, as well as samurai battle reenactments. Originally built in the twelfth century, it was renovated with stone walls and a tower by the Gamo clan in 1591. Later, it became associated with the Katakura family, retainers under the Date clan.
Wow what an amazingly well restored castle tower and well maintained grounds we only had a few hours but could easily take an entire day and not fully see it all.
Aliceisadog1 — Google review
Not the best castle but in terms of crowd it's the least I'd say, very good to take your time to view and photograph. Also the castle stamp is inside.
Jeremy T — Google review
A rather small castle, but with a very nice view of the city. The exhibition inside is rather modest as well. Surrounding park has a lot of Sakura and is really pretty, though. Do not buy the bundle ticket for ¥800 as it includes a some cinema just in Japanese. However, the Samurai Residence is a nice addition.

Shiroishi Castle is a city castle in Shiroishi City, and it is a rebuild of the castle which was damaged in war. Original Castle was built in 1591 and continued in use until 1871; then, when Meiji Emperor ended Endo Shogunate, in 1874, Meiji Emperor ordered abolishment of the feudal or shogun castles, and it included Shiroishi Castle. Current Shiroishi Castel was rebuilt in 1995 with wood material and traditional techniques, and it is integrated with a city park with an upgrading of lawn and other green improvement. Shiroishi Castle is included as one of 100 Castles in Japan. However, because it is a rebuilt from 1995, it is extremely new. For visitors to the Shiroishi Castle, they may feel going to park with a new building, instead of going to a historical architecture. It is really a completely different feeling or experience for visiting and stopping at this newly built castle when it is compared to Himeji Castle or Hikone Castle. If visitors want to enjoy classic and/or historical architecture, a castle, then, Shiroishi Castle is probably NOT the right one for you. But if visitors want to see and feel the re-build effort of Japanese castle, then, maybe, it is a good choice. There is bathroom inside Castle-park area. The entrance fee for adult is $ 400 Yen and visitors should buy tickets via Ticket machines outside Castle entrance.

An underrated castle which not many people know about, this was originally the resident castle of the Katakura clan. Don't miss out the spectacular views after climbing to the top.
Valkyriefrost — Google review
The place is small but well maintained and the view is amazing. For 400 yen it's a steal!
Yossi G — Google review
Traditional style castle (rebuilt) with a great view of the city and various info cards displayed around describing the history. You can scan the QR codes on them for an English translation. It’s 300JPY to get in, or you can pay 800JPY for an “all access” pass which includes the castle, samurai village/hut which is about a kilometre away, and a 3D showing. Be careful going up and down the stairs, they are very steep and since you cannot wear shoes inside will be quite slippery on socks. Just around the corner to the castle is a small shrine you can visit. Basic amenities such as vending machines and toilets are available
K B — Google review
Pretty castle that the locals are immensely proud of. Not much remains of its original self but the walls and surviving family shrine. A pleasant place to hide from torrential rain spells.

Zaō Fox Village is a must-visit attraction in Japan. This park boasts free-roaming red foxes and features a gift shop and petting area with ponies and rabbits. The sight of foxes running around freely between red tori gates is truly amazing. The large fenced-in area allows visitors to take photos of the foxes, but petting them is strictly prohibited as they may bite.
I surprisingly enjoyed this. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about it, but the foxes were very well cared for and still quite clearly wild animals. The staff seemed to genuinely interested to keep them safe and healthy. It was amazing to be so close to them. Most of them were sleeping, but they are just so beautiful and the area where you can feed them is quite open fascinating creatures. Lots of necessary rules and 99% of the guests I saw there were following them carefully.
Lauren S — Google review
It was my first time getting up close with foxes, and they were absolutely adorable! When I visited, most of the foxes were sunbathing, and I was lucky to arrive in time for the fox-holding activity, where I got to take a photo with one. The staff kindly used my phone to take the pictures. The park is well-organized and well-maintained, with clean surroundings. In the open area where you can walk among the foxes, there’s a slight natural fox smell, but it’s not strong. Overall, it’s one of the nicest fox villages I’ve been to—I highly recommend visiting. It’s more convenient if you drive there rather than taking public transportation.

Visiting Fox Village in Zao was such an unforgettable experience! My kids were absolutely thrilled to walk among the foxes—it felt like something straight out of a storybook. The adults had the chance to hold the foxes (for a small fee), while the kids got to pet them safely as we held them, which made it extra special for the whole family. The foxes were adorable, and the staff made everything feel fun and safe. I highly recommend this experience for both families and animal lovers—it’s truly one of a kind!
Trevor S — Google review
The foxes are so cute!! They curled up when they sleep and the way the stretch is just so adorable!! Sadly, you are unable to pet the fox as they are still wild animals, with chances of them attacking being there. However, they normally mind their own business as long as you don’t get too close. They just wander around you. There is a feeding session and a hugging session but I was there too early so I didn’t managed to catch that. It’s a very mesmerising time to just see animals I don’t ever get to see in my day to day life. You do need to drive up to the village, but it’s very worth the trip up.
Oon K — Google review
I went on a Thursday (they're closed on Wednesdays). I think their website is a bit out of date with admission pricing, but as of this posting, admission fee is ¥1500, and if you want to hold one of the foxes, it's an additional ¥1000. I'm not sure what their timing is for the holding sessions, but there are designated times. There is also a bus that is going to the village twice a day from Siroishizao Station or Siroishi Station, and it makes a couple other stops along the way. As long as you make note of their departure times, it should be all good. The timetable is located in the Fox Village Website. Overall, I'm glad I went and got to hold one of the fuzzballs with their Halloween costumes on, but being that it was about 2pm, I think a lot of the foxes were tired and mostly sleeping. Still cute though. And seeing rural Japan along the way is also interesting to see.
Amanda B — Google review
Very interesting experience seeing the foxes roam freely. These foxes do bite, so care must be taken to follow the instructions on what not to do, and not stay too long in one spot. Each child must be accompanied by one adult. No picking up the foxes or selfies allowed.
Catherine C — Google review
My Fiancé and I are obsessed with foxes and this was a must see for us. Where we live in B.C. Canada its nearly impossible to see a real fox this up close and personal. We made the long trek up to Shiroshi just to see these little furry cuties and it was worth all the time and effort involved. We stayed for almost two hours following the little fur balls around and taking photos. We even got to feed them little treats! We didn't want to leave!
Marshall C — Google review
Visited on a sunny day at May. There's only limited bus to access the village, so you need to check when you plan to go, or else you have to take taxi. The village is big, spending around 2 hrs to walk around and take photos of fox. Most of foxes are sleeping, but it can't stop their cuteness, very adorable. There are some foxes lives in the cage which is prohibited from photo taking. Also there's cuddle fox session at 11 am, you need to wear 2 wind breaker jackets which are provided by the facility. Staff would pass the fox randomly and let you carry it for like 5 mins, and then take many photos for you. It's a precious moment. There's a souvenir shop at the end of the tour. You can ask the staff to book a taxi if you don't want to waste time for next bus.

Great place to visit and see old world Japan. On the day we were there, it wasn't very busy, so we were able to view the castle without the crowds. The staff we're very helpful in explaining the history on building of the castle. The entrance to the castle is via steep stairs but we'll worth the effort.

(Translated by Google) I went there after visiting Shiroishi Castle. On the first floor, there is a souvenir shop and a restaurant. The second floor is a history museum. The third floor is a 3D high-vision theater. At the high-vision theater, I watched "Oni Kojuro Doesn't Need to Return" and "Not a Bandit." (It was a 400 yen changeover system, so it was 400 yen x 2) In between, I went to a nearby shrine and ate some hot noodles on the first floor, and I ended up not having enough time. There were actors with ties to the area (Shishido Jo: a graduate of Shiroishi High School who evacuated during the war), and Watanabe Ken and Saigo Teruhiko appeared as navigators. "Oni Kojuro Doesn't Need to Return" is about the triumphant return after the Summer Siege of Osaka. It was a drama that included the anecdote of bringing Sanada Yukimura's daughter Ame back to Shiroishi Castle. "Not a Bandit" is about the Oshu-Uetsu Alliance. I remember learning about it in elementary school. (I'm a local) The various clans in the Tohoku region came together and formed an alliance to oppose the new Meiji government. If they won, they were the government, if they lost, they were the rebels. (The end of the rebels was Goryokaku.) After this, a pioneer group from Shiroishi City developed the area around Shiroishi Ward in Sapporo. Don't expect too much from the 3D effect. I enjoyed it as a normal historical drama. I went to see the last one, "Miyagino Nobuo: Daughter's Revenge," later. The Oshu Shiroishi story was a famous story that was performed nationwide in Kabuki and other things. The part involving Yui Masayuki is probably fiction, though. Shishido Kai, Tanaka Ken, and Shibata Rie appeared. It was a story of revenge set in Shiroishi. I'd recommend "Miyagino Nobuo: Daughter's Revenge." It was an interesting drama. By the way, the history museum on the second floor (free) is not that great. The store on the first floor has a variety of items that history buffs will want to buy. The restaurant has a typical food court feel. ・Warm Kakiage Onmen (600 yen including tax) I ate here during a break in the 3D HD theater. I knew there was a restaurant here, but I thought there would only be a few light meals like ice cream, but there was actually quite a lot on the menu. There were nine types of warm noodles, four types of ramen, and three types of fried rice. There were also frankfurters, takoyaki, french fries, nuggets, and shiratama zenzai. The taste was like a regular food court, neither good nor bad, so I was satisfied since I didn't have high expectations. I parked my car in the parking lot, looked at Shiroishi Castle, and watched two historical stories related to Shiroishi at the History Exploration Museum, and about two hours passed in the blink of an eye. I wondered who would eat there, but it's surprisingly good to have a place to get a snack. A must-have in a tourist spot! I don't think it's paying though... Sightseeing in Shiroishi City is surprisingly doing well. I enjoyed Toshinji Temple, Shiroishi Castle, the History Exploration Museum, and Shiroishi Onmen.

The Kuzukake Umen was a delicious dish with a mild flavor and a thick texture. When I eat out, the seasoning is quite strong, but sometimes it's delicious, but this time the taste was gentle. Both the customers before us and those who came after us were ordering the same thing as us, so it must have been a recommended menu item. There is a poster of Sayuri Yoshinaga all over the wall of the shop. There was an explanation that the photo was taken at this store for a destination campaign.

(Translated by Google) You can enjoy Shiroishi's local gourmet ramen noodles. It is different from udon or somen, but it is somewhat similar to somen. Apparently this is the restaurant where Sayuri Yoshinaga filmed. After walking around the castle, I got cold and went inside. By the way, I had heard about umen a long time ago, but when I looked at the map of the station, I found out that Shiroishi is a famous local noodle. I need to eat this and go home. It was lunchtime, but the store was empty due to the current situation. People in Miyagi seem to be very strict about eating out, refraining from eating out, and even if they have to, they often take it home. Well, the recommended dish was Kuzu Umen, but I thought it would probably burn me, so I went with the Wild Vegetable Umen. In conclusion, it was very delicious. It's clearly different from somen, and it's not even udon. The noodles were deliberately short, and both the soup and wild vegetables were delicious. Apparently there are some restaurants that make it ramen-style, so I thought that would probably be delicious as well. I finished the soup and was satisfied. If you ever find yourself passing through Shiroishi, make sure to stop by Sato Seiji Seimen for a delightful culinary experience. This charming eatery specializes in Shiraishi Warm Noodles, which are notably shorter than typical noodles and crafted without oil to highlight the pure flavor of the flour. The dish is served in a warm broth brimming with wild vegetables and mushrooms, creating a hearty meal that’s both satisfying and nourishing.
I was surprised about the taste. I thought it would taste just like the classic soba, but I was wrong. The taste is a combo of savory, sour, and salty which is great!!! Please note that taking photos of the shop's interior and their menu is prohibited.

I wasn't sure whether to make the noodles cold or hot with the sesame sauce, but since it was a little chilly, I decided to go with the hot noodles. Kenchin is not Kanto-style with lots of root vegetables, but rather kenchin is mainly made with wild vegetables such as bracken. Although it was light, the Sendai miso was strong and the dish was very filling. It was delicious, but personally I felt it would have been even more delicious if it had been made with chicken or other soup stock to compensate for the lack of root vegetables. I was asked not to take photos, so I wasn't able to take any. But overall, I think it was delicious. Shiroishi Umen Nakajima, a Japanese regional restaurant located near the train station, offers delicious and satisfying umen noodles. This popular dish can be enjoyed either before or after exploring the town and castle. The umen is known for its great taste, with a choice of hot or cold variations. Many customers are so impressed by the flavor that they even purchase it to take home. The accompanying tempura adds another layer of enjoyment to the dining experience.
Just opposite the station. So u can either enjoy the umen before you visit the town and castle or after. The umen is really good. We all enjoyed. My husband ordered the cold one while I had the hot somen. It was so good that we went to the shop next to it to buy the umen home! And I regret not buying a carton and taqubin to our hotel. It’s really good and my elderly parents enjoy the umen very much when I brought a packet back for them. Must try and taste it when you are there!!!

I would give it no star for their rude attitude and service towards me and my family. Even on vacation, my family member had an urgent work meeting call. Because the food came slow, my family member had to take the call in a corner of the shop to not disturb the other patrons before she even touch her food. It was in February winter, so I hope you understand she cannot take the work call out in the cold. It was after peak lunch hours and soon there were only us and one other patron in the restaurant. The old lady boss first asked her young guy staff to indirectly tell us to leave the restaurant because she thinks my family member should not be on the call in a restaurant. As my family member did not touch the food, we asked if we could takeaway the food we paid and they rejected. When I was paying, she reiterated in my face that we were being inconsiderate to be on the call. It was ironic they had a magazine on Omotenashi for Foreigners. Before the incident, you can feel that the two young staffs are being very careful because the boss is just suffocating and narrow minded. I do NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone. I have been to many Japanese restaurants and this has the worst attitude and service. 非常不推荐。去过很多日本餐厅,这家态度服务最差。 추천하지 않습니다. 일본식당에 많이 가봤는데 여기는 서비스가 매우 나쁩니다.

During a brief detour from the Shiki-Shima Train Suite, I had the opportunity to try Hikarian's distinctive short noodle. The taste was exceptional, prompting me to purchase some to take home. The umen noodles in a flavorful soup infused with a touch of yuzu were truly remarkable. Despite the large crowd eagerly waiting for their turn, the experience was well worth it.
