Cape Nosappu, located at the easternmost point of Japan on the Nemuro peninsula in Hokkaido, offers serene surroundings and picturesque views. The area features a small lighthouse and is easily accessible from 'Nosappu Misaki' with just a short 2-minute walk. This cape holds significance as it is closest to the sunrise in Japan.
The lighthouse was sadly under construction when we visited. It is also extremely windy given it’s at the edge of the cliff. A little unfortunate that the location is not as exciting to visit as Cape Soya, but still interesting to be on the eastern most point of Japan.
William L — Google review
The lighthouse is cordoned off at the moment while the area in front of it is resurfaced and shored up. There isn’t a great deal else to see but it is the easternmost point in the country and includes a monument to the Northern Territories (the disputed islands of Hokkaido). Cape Ishiishi, further along the coast, is perhaps the more exciting choice.

Cape Nosappu is a must-visit spot—it's the easternmost point of Japan! The views are stunning, especially during sunrise when you can see the first light touch Japan. On a clear day, you can even catch a glimpse of the Russian-held Habomai Islands. The area has a peaceful yet solemn atmosphere, with monuments and displays reminding visitors of its historical significance. It’s windy and can get chilly, so dress accordingly. A truly memorable stop in Hokkaido!

The easternmost coast of Japan, with its wide expanse, offers a sense of the ocean's grandeur. Along the way, you can see many landmarks erected by various Japanese groups or celebrities advocating for the "return of the Northern Four Islands." The wind is very strong, and you can enjoy watching adorable seabirds and the iconic clock tower.
SS Y — Google review
It's a reasonably nice peninsula. As you'd expect, the view from the tip is fully uninterrupted and it really feels a bit like standing at the edge of the world. On the day I went, the visibility was absolutely terrible and it was freezing cold even in the middle of summer, but I'm not letting that affect the review. It is worth noting though. Cape Nosappu in general is a town with a great deal of focus on the occupied northern territories, with several monuments dedicated to their end goal of seeing their eventual return by Russia. The main draws of the town are general curiosity about the easternmost point, crab restaurants, birding, and the museums here. I didn't find any of these to be hugely interesting on the day, but your mileage may vary.
Eden S — Google review
Cape Nosappu is all about the return of the Northern Territories, which are 4 islands off the coast of the Nemuro Peninsula. The dispute started with the Soviet Union in the 1940s and is unresolved until this day. Visit on the first week of July, and the view was completely obscured by fog. Multiple monuments here, the biggest a metal arch with an ever-burning flame. Also a bell, and several other stone monuments.

December 2023 Was very windy at the time of visit. Don't forget to bring an umbrella, as it is snowy in the mainland, here it'll rain. If you want to see the seas frozen, I'd suggest coming in mid to late winter. Bus is about 40min from Nosappu station. Round trip about 2,000yen. If you don't know which ticket to buy, ask the staff, they'll provide help very kindly. Great place to learn about the Kuril Islands.

Having said that, there is something about the magnificent lake that is overwhelming just by looking at it. Nature & Parks
Meiji Park is a serene and well-maintained spot, perfect for a leisurely stroll or cherry blossom viewing. The pink hues of the cherry blossoms against the blue sky create a picturesque scene, especially when illuminated at night. Despite being popular during Golden Week for its early blooming cherry blossoms, it remains relatively uncrowded, making it an ideal place for locals and visitors to relax. The park's cool ambiance adds to its charm, providing a refreshing retreat from the heat.
Large park at the top of Nemuro. There are toilets, a children's playground, fountain, bbq area and two parking lots. There is also a Pokemon manhole cover.

A lovely and peaceful park right in the center of Nemuro City! My family and I really enjoyed our visit here. The open space, tall trees, and quiet surroundings made it a perfect place to relax and let the kids play. One of the highlights for us was spotting the Pokémon manhole cover featuring Nemuro’s local design — it was a fun surprise and a great photo spot for both kids and adults who love Pokémon! If you're passing through Nemuro, Meiji Park is a nice place to take a break, enjoy nature, and discover a little piece of local culture.

History Museums
Nemuro City Museum of History and Nature is a local museum that houses around 30,000 valuable materials, including those related to the Northern Territories and the Okhotsk Culture. The museum is located in an old elementary school building and features exhibits on various topics such as the Satsumon period, Karafuto boundary marker, Onnemotochashi model, and Chishima Aina.
A really interesting museum that’s free and contains lots of information about this area and the importance of the coast, from fishing to trains to communications. It also explains some of the history of the disputed islands off Hokkaido and includes some videos. A few captions are in English but Google Lens will help to fill in the gaps. You need to take your shoes off but a fancy dispenser serves up slippers at the entrance.

Nature preserve
Shunkunitai, derived from the Ainu word "sunku ni tai" meaning "forest of spruce," is a protected area on a coastal sandspit in Hokkaido, Japan. It features wooden paths and promenades for leisurely strolls with several courses to explore. The area offers a serene experience with opportunities to observe white-tailed eagles, Japanese cranes, deer, and various wild birds in their natural habitat.
One of the most interesting nature reserves in the world I suspect. A trio of large sand dunes where a forest and associated ecosystem has developed. Previously the forest was Sakhalin Spruce but according to signage, there were some severe tidal events in the 2010s that wiped out the spruce and dependent flora. They've since been replaced by Sakhalin Firs and other trees. Regardless, the bird life to be found here is fabulous. Warblers, buntings, wrens, woodpeckers, tits, kites, eagles, and cranes were all observed during my trips there. There are three routes that can be walked. The first route takes you along the outer dune. This goes for about 8km and never connects to the forest. It's also really tough to walk since it's all soft, dry sand. Along here I encountered some eagles, but mostly dozens and dozens of skylarks. The second route takes you adjacent to the forest to an area where you can see out onto the dune. It's not all that populated with wildlife and is quite poorly maintained. The third and most significant route takes you through a tiny bit of the forest. Here I saw Hokkaido Squirrels, black woodpeckers, Eurasian wrens, Japanese and Coal tits, and heard a few more species besides. There are a LOT of mosquitos here, even before peak mosquito season. Bring DEET containing repellent or you will have a bad time.

After crossing a bridge from a slightly confusing entrance, you'll find a parking lot, and from there a walking path stretches out towards the sea. The wooden walking path and several routes branch off into sandy beaches, and the sight of foxes and deer lounging around in the endless wetlands gives you the feeling that you've really reached the end of the world. There are bear warning signs everywhere. I wondered, "Are there bears in such a man-made place?", but the latter half of the walking path disappears into the forest. It certainly had an atmosphere that made me think that it wouldn't be surprising to see a bear up ahead. There are not many mosquitoes in Hokkaido, but they thrive here, so it's a good idea to bring insect repellent if you go in the summer. There are also horseflies, so long sleeves are recommended. Conveyor belt sushi restaurant
Nemuro Hanamaru Nemuro Store is a renowned sushi spot located in the easternmost tip of Hokkaido, Japan. The area is known for its fresh and delicious seafood, including seasonal ingredients like the Hanasaki crab. Visitors highly recommend trying the scallops and crab miso soup. The restaurant offers a conveyor belt with a minimal selection, but ordering directly from the chef is recommended for a wider variety.
Would definitely recommend the scallops, best I’ve had so far. They have English menu on request, conveyor belt only has minimal number of selections so better order directly from the chef. Overall a great place to have lunch/ pit stop.

It's definitely a premium option, with the more desirable plates consistently being 330 yen or higher. I left hungry and still ended up spending about 3300 yen. The sushi was absolutely superb though. Some of the nicest sushi I've had anywhere.

Privileged to have a meal at the main quarter of this renowned sushi restaurant. The sushi are fresh and special, unlike what are served in other places. Most memorable to us are the grilled eel, the fried rice cakes, the egg roll with grilled eel, the scallops and the geoduck. Some sushi are new to us and we are happy to have tried them. been to a couple nemuro hanamaru's in sapporo and loved them. hadn't occured to me that when i saw this place that the town is the namesake and perhaps this is their original location? either way, it was incredible and better than the sapporo locations

Western restaurant
Dorian, a renowned café in Nemuro, is well-known for its signature dish, escalope. This delectable meal consists of tonkatsu rice infused with a unique blend of flavors. Additionally, their oriental rice offers an equally delightful experience by combining succulent beef and garlic soy sauce. As a must-try for any tourist visiting Nemuro, the escalope embodies the essence of this popular destination.
The restaurant has a nostalgic western feel. It feels very cozy! The staff was nice and the food was delicious! I will come here again for sure.

Cozy JP-Western style restaurant. The food is Japanese home made style not fancy but taste good and simple.

The food was delicious. Would highly recommend if you're visiting.

This place is famous for escalope, which is tonkatsu rice with special flavoring. Their oriental rice is also amazing - beef with garlic soy sauce rice. Definitely don't miss the escalope, which is the quintessential tourist Nemuro experience. This is one of the most popular hotspots for those visiting Nemuro.

Very friendly staff and different kinds of food. They also have vegetarian options. Everything was very tasty. Thank you soo much! My absolute recommendations!

Japanized western restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Nemuro, New Mont Blanc is a culinary gem that carries on the legacy of its predecessor, Mont Blanc, renowned for creating the iconic Escalope dish. With over 50 years of history, this charming eatery offers a nostalgic dining experience reminiscent of simpler times. The interior boasts an ultra-retro vibe with small tables and chairs that transport you back to the '80s.
(Translated by Google) I visited here because I wanted to eat escalope. I've had escalope at other restaurants, such as Dorian, but for me, the butter rice at this restaurant had the strongest butter flavor and was incredibly delicious. As it's near the station, you can't park your car in front of the restaurant, but there is a parking lot behind it. This is a little hard to find, as you have to go out onto a wide road and then go around to the back. And finally, the design of the restrooms is very interesting and worth a visit. Thank you for the meal 😋 (Original)

Nice Western restaurant in town. We had chicken katsu and chicken saute, and they were both done well. The shop itself looks like it was stuck in the 80s, but the retro feel is nice. Look out for the lady who has to crawl out under the counter in order to take your order. No English menu I think.
Yew N — Google review
It’s the most ugly tonkatsu I ever had for Japanese food. The butter fried rice, too oily and not a fan at all. With MSG soup. Thanks but no thanks.

(Translated by Google) An old-fashioned coffee shop located in front of Nemuro Station. The inside of the store has a more retro atmosphere than you might imagine from the outside. Conveniently located right after arriving at Nemuro Station, the last stop on the Hanasaki Line. There is also delicious escalope at Dorian in the surrounding area, but if you are short on time or in bad weather, we recommend New Mont Blanc, which is closer to the station. If you have access by car, there is a parking lot for several cars at the back of the store. The restaurant's name is ``New Mont Blanc'' because it inherited the flavor from Mont Blanc, which is said to be the birthplace of Nemuro's famous escalope. The menu is extensive, but I ordered the standard escalope and shrimp escalope. Both come with soup. Rice and sauce with bamboo shoots have a unique taste.

(Translated by Google) This long-established coffee shop in front of Nemuro Station also serves Nemuro's local B-grade gourmet dish, "escalope." I visited specifically for it, and many others did. That said, the restaurant didn't seem busy enough to warrant a line (after all, Nemuro is on the eastern tip of Hokkaido). So, the escalope was butter rice! Pork cutlet! Demi-glace sauce! The taste was pretty much what you'd expect. 😁 It was a calorie bomb, but if you're concerned about calories, you can't enjoy delicious food. After I finished, there was a sea of butter at the bottom of the silver plate, but that's about it. The flavor may look strong, but it's actually quite light—perhaps the fat masks the saltiness. It reminded me of a relative of hanton rice or Volga rice. If you're in Nemuro, depending on the time of year, I might be happier with a sanma donburi bowl. Well, I guess that's how it is, B-grade gourmet food. The store only accepts cash, and the interior is a typical coffee shop. The parking lot is behind the store. However, there were people parking on the street, and it's quite large considering it's on a main street.

(Translated by Google) I first learned about Escalope when I came to Nemuro. The interior of the shop has the feel of an old-fashioned coffee shop, and is dimly lit and somehow relaxing. It seems that many locals visit for lunch. The butter rice in the Escalope was richer than I expected. I also ordered something called cutlet meat, which was also very delicious. The portion of noodles was so large that I think even a man would be full.

(Translated by Google) The nostalgic New Mont Blanc (New Mont). I went back home and had planned to have lunch at another restaurant, but it was closed so I went to New Mont Blanc instead. I used to go there often when I was younger, so the moment I walked in I was filled with nostalgia. The small chairs and tables, and the old-fashioned, ultra-retro interior haven't changed at all, and the escalopes are still served on silver plates. I ordered escalope, shrimp escalope, and meatball spaghetti. They were all as delicious as ever. I'd like to go again when I visit my hometown. Conveyor belt sushi restaurant
If you're ever in the area, make sure to check out "祭囃子," a delightful conveyor-belt sushi restaurant nestled within a bustling shopping mall. This spot is perfect for seafood lovers, especially those who appreciate fresh ingredients and traditional Japanese flavors. Many visitors rave about the cherry blossom sea bream and lean bluefin tuna, both of which are standout dishes that showcase the local catch. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, making it an ideal stop after a long day of exploring or traveling.
This unique kaiten-sushi restaurant, located only in Nemuro, Japan, doesn’t use any machines! All sushi is carefully prepared by skilled sushi chefs. Their salmon, pacific saury, and salmon roe are especially worth trying!

(Translated by Google) I was surprised by how delicious it was! ️ I was planning to go to Hanamaru, but the wait was so long that I decided to just stop by another conveyor-belt sushi place, but the food was beyond delicious. I highly recommend the lean bluefin tuna and crab miso soup! I went around 1 o'clock, and it was completely empty, so I was able to go in without any problems. I think it's near Aeon, so there were a lot of customers getting takeout.

(Translated by Google) It was raining, so I visited because it was close to my hotel and I couldn't resist eating fish in Nemuro. Since it's a conveyor belt sushi restaurant inside Aeon, I had to compromise to some extent, but when I tried it, it was very delicious. The cherry blossom sea bream was especially delicious. It's a bit pricey at 3,800 yen for 10 dishes, but it's more than satisfying considering the taste and quantity. By the way, although it is a conveyor belt sushi restaurant, the sushi is not flowing in the lane, and there was no explanation, so I was a little confused at first. . . It took me a while to understand that you fill out an order form on the counter and hand it to the owner to place your order. I recommend this restaurant if you come to Nemuro and want a quick and local meal.

(Translated by Google) I was exhausted from driving for a long time, and it was empty from early hours, and I saw the reviews here, so I went. It's a conveyor belt sushi restaurant, but the sushi doesn't go around on a conveyor belt. Instead, you write your order on a slip at your seat and hand it to the chef at the counter. Everything was fresh and delicious, so I thoroughly enjoyed it. This may depend on the time of day and how busy it is, but the plates listed on the order slip come out one after another, so it seems better to limit yourself to about three dishes per order slip so that your table isn't full of plates of sushi and you can enjoy your meal at your own pace. The staff on the floor were friendly, and overall it was a very good value for money restaurant.
