A serene destination, this easternmost point of Japan features a small lighthouse & scenic views.
Slide 1 of 8
The lighthouse was sadly under construction when we visited. It is also extremely windy given it’s at the edge of the cliff. A little unfortunate that the location is not as exciting to visit as Cape Soya, but still interesting to be on the eastern most point of Japan.
The lighthouse is cordoned off at the moment while the area in front of it is resurfaced and shored up. There isn’t a great deal else to see but it is the easternmost point in the country and includes a monument to the Northern Territories (the disputed islands of Hokkaido). Cape Ishiishi, further along the coast, is perhaps the more exciting choice.
Cape Nosappu is a must-visit spot—it's the easternmost point of Japan! The views are stunning, especially during sunrise when you can see the first light touch Japan. On a clear day, you can even catch a glimpse of the Russian-held Habomai Islands. The area has a peaceful yet solemn atmosphere, with monuments and displays reminding visitors of its historical significance. It’s windy and can get chilly, so dress accordingly. A truly memorable stop in Hokkaido!
The easternmost coast of Japan, with its wide expanse, offers a sense of the ocean's grandeur. Along the way, you can see many landmarks erected by various Japanese groups or celebrities advocating for the "return of the Northern Four Islands." The wind is very strong, and you can enjoy watching adorable seabirds and the iconic clock tower.
It's a reasonably nice peninsula. As you'd expect, the view from the tip is fully uninterrupted and it really feels a bit like standing at the edge of the world. On the day I went, the visibility was absolutely terrible and it was freezing cold even in the middle of summer, but I'm not letting that affect the review. It is worth noting though. Cape Nosappu in general is a town with a great deal of focus on the occupied northern territories, with several monuments dedicated to their end goal of seeing their eventual return by Russia. The main draws of the town are general curiosity about the easternmost point, crab restaurants, birding, and the museums here. I didn't find any of these to be hugely interesting on the day, but your mileage may vary.
Cape Nosappu is all about the return of the Northern Territories, which are 4 islands off the coast of the Nemuro Peninsula. The dispute started with the Soviet Union in the 1940s and is unresolved until this day. Visit on the first week of July, and the view was completely obscured by fog. Multiple monuments here, the biggest a metal arch with an ever-burning flame. Also a bell, and several other stone monuments.
December 2023 Was very windy at the time of visit. Don't forget to bring an umbrella, as it is snowy in the mainland, here it'll rain. If you want to see the seas frozen, I'd suggest coming in mid to late winter. Bus is about 40min from Nosappu station. Round trip about 2,000yen. If you don't know which ticket to buy, ask the staff, they'll provide help very kindly. Great place to learn about the Kuril Islands.
A small cape easily reached by car. When I was there, they were doing major maintainence to the slope which probably had land slide

(Translated by Google) It is the easternmost station in Asia, along with the easternmost station in Japan, which has been confirmed to be abolished in March 2025. The station name sign was stolen by the garbage. The surrounding area is completely residential, and there is only a monument, but I think it is meaningful to visit. From April, Nemuro Station will become the easternmost station in Japan, but I would like to see a sign saying ``Higashi-Nemuro Station'' like Hanasaki Station.
A station without any staff Basically this is the most Eastern JR station, very primitive Our first impression was wonder if this station no longer use, haha.....
Worth to have a stop here
Station closed on 15/03/2025. Nemuro become the most Eastern JR station in Japan.
(Translated by Google) Japan's easternmost station, I stopped by because the station was going to be closed this month. Surprisingly, there are many houses around the station. I feel that there is more need than other stations on the Hanasaki Line. Wouldn't it be better if they were concentrated at Nemuro Station? I didn't feel so lonely, There are signs posted all over the place stating that it is the easternmost station in Japan. (Translated by Google) Visited in March 2025, a few days before the station was closed due to timetable revisions. I stayed at a hotel in Kushiro and took the first train on the Hanasaki Line, arriving at 7:58. The stay was about 30 minutes. There were many people who got off the train together, and a taxi was waiting in front of the station. After taking photos, the people headed back to Nemuro Station. Me and a few others waited at the station. The station itself is a stick-line station with one line per surface. There are no toilets or station notes. There were benches in the plaza, but there was no waiting room, so I was glad it wasn't raining or snowing. The surrounding area is a residential area and there is also a school, so I passed many students, but no one was using the station, and only iron nerds were getting on and off. I thought it was inevitable that the station would be abandoned. (Translated by Google) I visited in November 2018. You will be driving on an unpaved road, so be careful of flying rocks. It is only accessible by car, but there is no parking lot, so you will have to park your car near the end of the road. Along the way, we were building an amazing solar power generation facility, and I thought it would be a good idea to build a parking lot since we have such a wonderful tourist resource. It takes about 20 minutes to park the car and reach the tip of the cape. Follow the path made of half-cut logs. It's a nice and nice road, but it's not a clean and easy road to walk on, so it might be difficult for elderly people or people with disabilities to walk on it. Please be careful. The scenery was amazing and cannot be described in words. The coastline of Cape Ochiishi is a sheer cliff about 50m high, but the inland part of the cape is a flat plateau, and the Cape Ochiishi Wetland is a pure forest of Scots spruce. A walking path has been established to the tip of the cape, and the surrounding area is also known as the Sphagnum Wetland. In 1930, the Sakai azalea, which can be found in Sakhalin and the Kamchatka Peninsula, was discovered in Cape Ochiishi Wetland. As it is close to the easternmost tip of Hokkaido, the Cape Ochiishi Lighthouse is a major landmark for ships sailing in the Pacific Ocean. In 1994, the Cape Ochiishi Station of the National Institute for Environmental Studies' Global Environmental Research Center was built, which conducts weather observation and atmospheric sampling, separation, and measurement. Since October 1995, we have been observing and publishing data on the concentration of carbon dioxide and atmospheric trace components, which are thought to be related to global warming. Vehicles are not allowed inside the cape as it is an environmentally protected area, so you will have to park at a parking lot and walk along a wooden path about 2 km long. Truly the end of the world. A place that makes you feel like you're actually in Hokkaido. I want you to go there once before you die. The path is well-maintained, but there is quite a bit of walking, so be careful. I've been here twice and I hardly see anyone else. There is a bit of a scary atmosphere at dawn and dusk, so it can be scary to be alone. This Nature Centre is full of useful information and heaps of brochures about this conservation area and about the birds of Hokkaido in general. There are wonderful views from the back windows overlooking the area. We interacted with two assistants, and both were very helpful and kind. To visit the Shunkunitai Wild Bird Sanctuary, you need to drive around to the wetlands, but the Song Bird Trail, or Arboretum Trail, that starts beside the Nature Centre, is also well worth exploring if you have time. If you're quiet, you'll probably see deer. We saw about 8. It's a very picturesque forest. It was very muddy in spots, so wear the right footwear.
Nice little bird Sanctuary. I went in June 2025, so around the beginning of summer. It's staffed and accessible from 9am onwards, which is a bit late for most birding in summer since sunrise is around 3:30am in June, which is a little counter-productive. It has a range of leaflets and informative material on local species. It also has scopes to view the local reed beds, ocean, lake, and forest edge. The first time I came to Shunkunitai I'd forgotten to buy a bottle of water before catching the bus, but I didn't want to go back too quickly since it was about 660 yen each way and the bus only ran every couple of hours. Unfortunately this centre didn't have any vending machines or water dispensers leaving me thirsty, which was a bit disappointing. When I asked about getting water I was told to drive to the local road station, which wasn't particularly helpful since I didn't have a car.

Made a brief stop at this shrine to buy Omamori. There is also a tiny free museum.
A significant shrine in eastern Hokkaido that's worth dropping by, it has a unique fish charm that's part of Hokkaido's unique charms collection spread across different locale of the island.
This is a very famous shrine in the area. Here you can draw a fortune slip in the shape of a sanma (saury fish), which predicts your future luck. It is very special. There is also a unique architectural design of the port, and you can also enjoy the sea view from a distance. If you happen to come to this place, you can come here to experience the Japanese port style.
A small, beautiful and informative shrine with many photographs of past festival celebrations on the walls all around the very grand portable shrine. I fished for a sanma fish omikuji (proudly and happily hanging on my souvenir wall at home now) and got a 大吉 (very good) predictions that accurately predicted an unexpected surprise “go Shiretoko National Park and you might see a brown bear 🐻 “ and we actually did. 🤎
Very spiritual and humbling experience. Pay attention to Shinto shrine customs and etiquette.
A famous place of religion, good to know more about traditional culture of Japan
This is one of the easternmost manned shrines in Japan with more than 200 years of history. The origin of the shrine is when Kahei Takadaya, a pioneer of northern sea fishing, worshiped the shrine while managing the fishing grounds in 1806. The shrine was transported to the current spot in 1881. After visiting and praying at the shrine, it is recommended you have a look at the other buildings and facilities such as the Festival Museum (Omatsuri Shiryokan) in the shrine office. Here you can see documents and displays like the gorgeous portable shrine (Omikoshi). It is also worth checking out the Goshuin (the letter bearing the shogun’s scarlet seal), amulets (omamori), or written oracles and fortunes (omikuji) which are distributed and sold there.   <Amulets (Omamori)> This is a small object or charm, it is a someone’s wish for protection against evil, blessing(good luck / better fortune) and guardianship. Omamori are Japanese amulets, talismans and charms. <Written Oracles (Omikuji)>Written Oracles, Omikuji, are distributed at the shrine to tell someone’s luck. Omikuji should be tied to Mikujikake (the rod or rope to hang Omikuji fortunes between two pillars). <Votive Picture of Horse (Ema)> Ema are wooden plates with pictures dedicated to temples and shrines used when praying at the shrines or saying thanks for the wish or goal that was achieved. They are hang in specific places, and you can write your wish or name on the back of some of them.   *As of August 2017Pics:Address:1-4, Kotohiracho, Nemuro, Hokkaido, JapanGoogle Map:Access1.BUS 【From Nemuro City Area】 Take the “Hanasaki Line” bus from the Nemuro Station Bus Terminal and get off at the “Shiomicho” stop. A lovely and peaceful park right in the center of Nemuro City! My family and I really enjoyed our visit here. The open space, tall trees, and quiet surroundings made it a perfect place to relax and let the kids play. One of the highlights for us was spotting the Pokémon manhole cover featuring Nemuro’s local design — it was a fun surprise and a great photo spot for both kids and adults who love Pokémon! Windy but a great spot, with steps down to decking alongside the Stone Wheel and a little birdwatching hut if you’re so inclined. The cobbled coastline reminded me of the Devil’s Causeway in Northern Ireland. Watch the big waves, which can splash you. I spotted (briefly) whales swimming in the distance too. There are toilets in the free car park.
good scenery, or great viewpoint towards the Pacific. however, you have to prepare strong wind sometimes, especially winter time. pay attention to high waves splashs and slippy short trail, iced rocks.
It takes 15-20 mins walking from Hanasaki port bus stop, where the short cut is inside the shrine. Sea and stones are magnificent. Take care when the wave is huge.
This lighthouse is easily reached as it's serviced by a carpark. The stone wheel is interesting but not worth coming the distance to see it. Great if you are in the area!
Definitely enjoyed the place! We climbed onto the rocks formation, beautiful sunset. We enjoyed watching the waves lapping into the coastline.
Beautiful wave 🌊 sounds & amazing scenery for meditation and relaxation 👌
The rock formations were very cool and so were the waves! Can get pretty cold, but you are probably used to that already if you are in Hokkaido. Get in some selfies by the rock formations and the lighthouse!
Very nice view. We were amazed how nature created such a wheel.

I heard that long time ago Russans skated here .At the end of the Edo period(1792), Russian Laxmen came to Nemuro, built steam baths, and went skating on the frozen Nemuro Port (this was the first skating in Japan).

Informative museum on the history of the four islands, Habomai, Shikotan, Kunashiri and Etorofu, including videos (albeit slightly outdated ones) showing the lives of the people who currently live there. The museum promotes friendship but also shows that the political status of the four islands, known as the Northern Territories in Japan and the Kuril islands in Russia, is still unresolved.
(Translated by Google) There is no admission fee and there is a lot of information, but because there are many related exhibition halls or buildings along the way, you can just choose one to learn about it. You don't need to go to every one of them to avoid feeling tired. If you come to the Northern Four Islands of the Nemuro Peninsula, you must understand the issues, so please be sure to take a look. (Translated by Google) The pony people are often found near the gazebo at the end of the boardwalk that leads from the parking lot, but depending on the time and weather, they may be at the edge of the flower garden or hidden in the bushes, and as they live a free-spirited life, they may not always be near the boardwalk. If you approach, the pony people will come up to you and let you pet them, but even though they are docile, remember not to stand directly behind their hind legs and to be careful not to get bitten by your fingers etc. They are not trained by humans like in a zoo... Proceeding from the parking lot, you will come to a wooden entrance. In front of you, a boardwalk leads towards the gazebo, where about 10 ponies are grazing. The garden is quite vast, with seasonal flowers in bloom. Perhaps because it was a weekday afternoon when we visited, there was no one there and we were able to spend a relaxing time. Along the way, we stopped to see the flower fields of the Kitakata Primeval Flower Garden. Ponies and horses were grazing in the garden, munching on the grass with gusto. After looking around, I was about to head back along the boardwalk when I heard a clicking sound coming from behind. I turned around to see the horse, who seemed to be begging for food and started tugging at my T-shirt. I frantically ran away and it gave up halfway through, but it was a rare experience and made for a fond memory. When I left the garden and looked back, I saw that the horse was begging again from another person, and I laughed, thinking that it was a repeat offender. A really interesting museum that’s free and contains lots of information about this area and the importance of the coast, from fishing to trains to communications. It also explains some of the history of the disputed islands off Hokkaido and includes some videos. A few captions are in English but Google Lens will help to fill in the gaps. You need to take your shoes off but a fancy dispenser serves up slippers at the entrance.
Though it's a small.museum, the displays and information are well presented and provided a lot of interesting information on the history of Nemuro and its wildlife.
(Translated by Google) Materials about the natural history of Nemuro and Ainu culture are on display. Admission is free. You can also get a stamp for the 100 famous castles here. The quality was so high that it was hard to believe it was free. The display of the Sakhalin Japan-Russia border marker stone was very interesting, along with its history. One side is written in Japanese, and the other side is written in Russian. I was able to see some valuable materials. It was wonderful. I learned about the size of sea otters in the wildlife exhibition room, and when I spotted three of them at Cape Kiritappu that same day, I was even more impressed because I had learned about them beforehand! My main purpose was to see the Sakhalin Boundary Stone, but there was so much more to see that I also got to see the Kurumaishi Natural Monument, making it a very satisfying experience. (Translated by Google) [Cape Ochiishi] A cape that juts out into the Pacific Ocean from the base of the Nemuro Peninsula special natural monument When the Dutch explorer Fries visited Nemuro in 1643, he saw Cape Ochiishi and introduced it to the world, naming it ``Cape Manshoft''. We arrived by JR train, without planning to drive around the nemuro area. We were worried about getting around without a car, asked the information center about how can we navigate. They were very helpful and recommended a local bus tour which wasn’t posted on the nemuro tourism website. Also recommended few spots where we can get by on foot or by taxi. Thank you so much!
A gift shop, tourist booth and stamp rally all in one. We also discovered the certificates one can collect for visiting Nemuro, and stamping the date on it. It looks very formal and official. There's toilets, benches for sitting and staff at the counter during opening hours. It's an easy stop by when exiting the JR station, as the building is right across the bus stop. There's also an owl statue at the entrance that you can touch for happiness. Very amusing!
I spoke with a very kind and patient man, that helped me find both an ebike for hire (at Tokiwa Inn) and where to eat Hanasaki crabs, despite us sharing little language. His friendliness was an immediate good start to my time in Nemuro, and reflects very positively on the town.
Awesome! Book a local tour of course A and course B at this Tourist Information Centre before 08:15am, the morning of the start of day tour. Make no regrets to book this local tour.
Come here to pick up a certificate of visit to the eastern most point of Japan! Otherwise, it also houses a modest visitor shop.
