Catholic church
Sights & Landmarks
The Mosta Rotunda is a 17th-century Catholic church in Malta, known for its neoclassical architecture and historical significance. Completed in 1860, it features a magnificent dome that is said to be the third largest unsupported church dome in Europe. Modeled after the Pantheon in Rome, it withstood a direct hit from a German bomb during World War II.
Visiting the Mosta Rotunda is an unforgettable experience. This magnificent church, with its stunning neoclassical architecture and enormous dome, is truly awe-inspiring. Stepping inside, you immediately feel the peaceful and sacred atmosphere. The history here is remarkable—especially the story of the “miracle bomb” that fell through the dome during World War II but didn’t explode. Walking around, admiring the beautiful frescoes and the impressive altar, you can truly feel the spiritual energy of this holy place. A visit to Mosta Rotunda is not just sightseeing—it’s a moment to connect with history, faith, and tranquility. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Gozo!

Beautiful church with some beautiful stories. What makes this special is the way they present the church and its stories. You pay only about €5 for admission AND a lovely audio tour you download onto your smartphone. You have to climb up and down steep, narrow circular staircase to see the dome up close and personal. That final act of the show is the visit to the air raid shelters in front of (and below ground level) the church.
Joe M — Google review
A spectacular building to visit. Most large churches a built in the crucifix style, this one is round. The decoration and domestic is awesome. It was fairly busy when we visited, but it was quiet enough to sit. Worth €3-5
John N — Google review
Well worth visiting, quite an incredible structure, beautiful inside. There are WWII air-raid shelters here too, which you can visit. You can walk up to the level of the triple cross, and walk around the outside. In the stonework there are many people who have left their name and date, which is very interesting. I saw one which was from 1864, one hundred and sixty one years ago!! Quite amazing.

Absolutely a must visit while in Malta, great views whilst on top of the church. The bomb that went through the church rooftop during the second world war, lots of baroque paintings around the church and getting to see behind the altar was brilliant.
Ryan — Google review
Beautiful building, full of history and low entry price. Enjoyed how it didn't charge extra for climbing up to the rooftop area. Only sad it had renovation going on inside and was unable to take better pictures.
Jovita L — Google review
A unscheduled stop turned into a very nice experience. Beautiful basilica and we discovered an authentic WW II bomb shelter open to the public near the entrance of the church. SO COOL!!
Jeff Z — Google review
A stunning church with a fascinating history. For a small fee you can climb the 74 internal spiral steps up to the dome itself and get great views down into the sanctuary as well as go outside to take photos of the surrounding city and landscape. The biggest historical story is from 1942 when a bomb dropped by a German bomber hit the dome. There were 300 people inside the church praying so if it had exploded they would mostly have been killed. However, the bomb hit hard enough to go right through the dome and then fell down to the floor of the sanctuary, a second chance to explode but again it didn’t and it also landed between the people so nobody was hurt. A pretty good example of the power of prayer! The defused bomb is still there in the church for you to see and stands as a reminder of the miracle of the unexplored bomb. Btw, when the engineers defused it, they found absolutely nothing wrong with it that would have stopped it exploding! I really recommend visiting this beautiful place.

The Malta Aviation Museum is a paradise for aircraft enthusiasts, situated on the former Royal Air Force station. It features a remarkable collection of aircraft, including a WWII Spitfire Mk IX and a Hawker Hurricane IIa that were salvaged from the sea after 54 years. The museum also showcases other vintage planes such as a Flying Flea, De Havilland Vampire T11, Fiat G91R, and Douglas Dakota DC-3.
Really amazing place. Planes are beautiful and in really good condition. The vending machines in the canteen area have lots of great options and the gift shop has lots of amazing gifts for aviation lovers like me. There is a huge model collection that's really impressive that has models of planes of many different countries and time periods. 10/10 will definitely visit again!

We had such a lovely time at the Malta Aviation Museum today. There is a lot to see and learn, from historic aircraft to fascinating displays, and one of our highlights was being able to go into the front of a cockpit. What really made the experience even more special was the kindness of the staff. The curator (or maybe employee; we are not quite sure, sorry) was incredibly helpful and genuinely friendly. He even offered us water because of the heat, and we ended up having a really nice little chat. You can truly tell he’s passionate about the museum and what it represents. It's definitely worth a visit if you're in Malta and even just a little curious about aviation.
Pauline E — Google review
This is a private museum that does a great job of recording and preserving Malta's aviation heritage. Understandably the collection leans towards the second world war but it also features some post-war aircraft - and there are some vehicles and lots of interesting photographs. The exhibits are all clearly labeled and the descriptions contain interesting historical information and anecdotes.
Richard L — Google review
They have many great and historic planes you can look at. Including the history of the general types of airplanes and the specific history of the models on display. This exhibition is a nice add on after visiting some of the "Malta at war" museums and a must see for all airplane fans.
Jannik H — Google review
Excellent place to Visit, just next to the craft village, a nice place to walk around and look at the planes in the hangar's has a spitfire which I believe was flown to Malta for the museum to house.
Ryan — Google review
We enjoyed our visit, there was a very informative DVD show about the defence of Malta during WW2. If you like aircraft it's worth a visit
Paul — Google review
Love the history of Malta, if you do then you have to visit this museum, watch the video of the ace pilot shooting down so many German aircraft, it had me in tears how such a young man could be so brave.
Mariushshshsh J — Google review
Small museum with a displays of aeroplanes, motorbikes, helicopters, models, uniforms and more set in two large hangers, featuring a history of aviation in Malta. If you are a history or aeroplane buff there is lots to see, if not, it's still a good visit but at €9 you might think it a bit expensive for what you get. There are toilets onsite and a small playback for the kids. There is a memorial garden up past the toilets but this was in a poor state and needs attention.

Ta' Bistra Catacombs, located just outside Mosta, are a fascinating glimpse into Malta's religious history. Dating back to the 4th century AD, this extensive network of early Christian catacombs offers a unique experience for visitors. With 16 groups of chambers and individual entrances from the ridge overlooking St. Paul's Bay, it holds significant historical importance. Open to the public with guided tours available, it provides an intriguing look into its past.
This was a very interesting place to visit. First of all, please be aware that it is only open on the last weekend of each month, Not every day. It's quite a small place so the visit won't take up too much time. I think it is essential to get the talking guide to get the most out of this site. What I found the most interesting and also heartbreaking, is learning about the actual history of this site and how it was completely mismanaged and ignored for decades. Essentially most of the site was destroyed or lost since it was not considered important and it was on private land. The government also thought building a road was more important than conserving the site. I recommend visiting this site not only because it is of historical and archeological significance, but also to learn about the practical side of conservation and how it is a huge challenge based on the social requirements of the times.

The Mosta World War II Shelter is a significant historical site in Malta, offering visitors a glimpse into the island's wartime experiences. This underground refuge with sturdy concrete walls provided safety to locals during intense air raids. Exploring the narrow passages allows visitors to gain firsthand insight into the harrowing experiences faced by Maltese people during the war. The shelter features informative displays in multiple languages and showcases leftover belongings of those who sought safety within its quarters.
Well worth a visit to this beautiful place. Entrance fee is worth it. You get access to the rotunda and WW2 shelter too. No need to book in advance and an audio guide is available. The story about the UXB was fascinating. It even impressed the kids!!
Chris R — Google review
Visited Mosta and took a tour of the church and the air raid shelter. It was interesting and informative the exhibits were interesting. The church is very beautiful and the views are great. Really nice place to visit with really of places to eat and drink in the area.
Derrick L — Google review
A great sight to visit after the Mosta Rotunda. Entrance to the shelter is outside the church to the side, and is set beneath the main square. The hand-carved shelter was constructed over a year during WW2 and is impressive to experience. There is historical information provided within the shelter. The visit takes about 15 minutes.
Nicholas S — Google review
Last part of the Mosta tour, if you download the app there is much more information to be found. It's a steep walk (see video), but worth it. Max 10 minutes to have a good overview of this shelter and the stories it carries.
MUSEUM H — Google review
Ticket: included in the price of the church ticket (5€/person) Time: 10 minutes (maybe less) It tells a story. Seeing the leftover belongings of the people who used these quarters as a safe heaven brings some special emotions. There are few locked out parts of shelter so, you only get to walk the main tunnel and se close one of the sleeping chambers.

What's special about this place is that during the war there was a bomb that went through the roof but the grenade didn't explode.Keep the people in the bunker safe.No one died and The real bomb can still be seen today. Unfortunately, during the time I traveled outside, There is construction work in front of the building.

Fantastic WW2 Bunker, definitely worth a visit
Chris P — Google review
Yes, it's rather small, but it's definitely wort a visit and here's why: 1. It's not that expensive. The entry fee is 3€ but there's a combi ticket for the Mosta Rotunda and its inner gallery which includes the WWII shelter and it's only 5€. 2. It's very informative! There are lots of information boards in different languages (-> picture). It's not just a museum but an actual shelter (hence the name) which is rather rare in my opinion. It's interesting to see how people actually had to hide in those shelters, the little space they had. 3. It also gives information about how people lived back then. Not only about the shelter but it also displays e.g. tools that farmers or other professions used. All in all I can only recommend it.

Restaurant
Ta' Marija is an iconic Maltese restaurant that showcases the country's vibrant and festive nature. The menu features authentic Maltese cuisine with subtle touches from a modern-day palate, and from traditional rabbit dishes to mouthwatering desserts, there's something to tempt every taste bud. The service is fast and the food generous, making Ta' Marija a must-go for anyone looking for a delicious gastronomic experience in Malta.
The owner was so passionate about his business and it showed. Our greeting made us feel special, the place was beautiful and we had a good table with comfortable seats. Menu was vast and reasonable so we're the drinks. Service was exceptional. This is a great night to visit, with the folk dancers, and then able to dance ourselves. A 10/10 for anyone. Thank you
Gillian M — Google review
All the reviews are correct, you receive a very warm welcome and the contemporary folklore evening is a very polished well run experience. The menu is varied with traditional choices and good sized portions. Don’t add salt without tasting first, everything is very well seasoned! The Maltese trifle was lovely. The very loud traditional music to accompany the meal was provided by two traditional lol electric guitars The Cultural show is a bit twee, the dances comprised the same moves performed in a different order with an amusing commentary. There were no men and the costumes were more cortisan, than traditional Maltese folklore. The evening concludes with 30 minutes of very loud step back in time disco- dancing (Jet2 holiday) Overall a pleasant evening and worth €55 per head without a hotel pick up. Note the red Merlot was drinkable and the Maltese white wine requires a less discerning palate. Do go, its an entertaining experience but make sure you check your bill

Ta’ Marija is more than just a restaurant it’s a full Maltese dining experience. Family-owned since 1964, you can feel the owner’s passion for the place as he personally introduces the restaurant and shares stories throughout the evening. Alongside the meal, there’s a wonderful local Maltese performance with live music and storytelling, which eventually transforms into a full-on party. Complete with 80s classics and everyone in the restaurant up and dancing. While I wasn’t as impressed with the food itself, the exceptional entertainment and atmosphere made the evening unforgettable. If you’re visiting Malta, this is an experience I would highly recommend.
Anushka L — Google review
The place was amazing! Even though we didn’t have a reservation, the staff did their best to find us a table. After 9:30 PM, there was a traditional dance performance (Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays), and afterward, the place turned into a disco — such a fun surprise! The service was excellent, and the staff were super friendly. The food was good too. We tried rabbit and horse meat — both were fine, though the horse meat wasn’t really to our taste. Their house wines was great as well. Overall, we had a great time and would definitely recommend it!
Selin S — Google review
A brilliant dinner and a show event at Ta’ Marija! A truly wonderful way to experience Maltese traditions — various dishes and dances. We booked a predetermined tasting menu, that had everything from Ravioli to Rabbit meat. The host and servers were excellent— friendliest and kindest in Malta! The owner made us welcome and cozy at his restaurant. Brilliant if you’re looking to get traditional Maltese cuisine and some evening entertainment. My best regards, Sten

I didn’t enjoy the meal there. I didn’t like any of the dishes, didnt enjoy wines and cocktail either. It is a tourist trap. Thankfully guitarists and singer specifically made the dinner nicer. Beautiful music Dancing part was ok But music was at one point too loud i had to go put of it.

Breakfast restaurant
I visited Mellows Cafe for lunch as it was conveniently close to my hotel. Situated near the Rotunda in the heart of Mosta, this restaurant offers a range of delicious dishes. I ordered a gourmet burger, pasta carbonara, water, and an Aperol spritz, all of which were excellent. Despite being picky eaters, we found the food to be very flavorful with generous portions and ample cheese and sauces on the side.
Very good breakfasts, large portions and friendly stuff. 😊❤️

Nice place to have a coffee and some food, overall good. Service is good and attentive, pizza was good and well priced the Al Orza was good but would prefer other sauce to be a bit thicker. Very tasty though. The let down was the dessert, got a banoffee as a staple however the biscuit was so compacted the spoon couldn’t permeate it and also the cream tasted very fake not fresh whipped cream. Place is very loud.

I know the old Mellows. Have not been here since years. Now its much bigger and the food we had was yummy.

Lovely coffee/food/dessert cafe. We Knew it was good as soon as we noticed we were the only non locals in there . Coffee was very nice( better than starbs/costa) homemade desserts were Amazing and you can easily tell they were homemade. Also price was very reasonable for the quality of it all. Will definitely recommend to people.

It seems very regular from the outside but we were very surprised about the quality of the food. The taste is amazing and also the variety of dishes offers something for everyone. We recommend trying a local wine from the wine list, it's superb! We had a chicken Ceasar salad and Pizza al salmone to share. The prices are also super good! *edit* we have been there another time and ordered the maltesian ravioli and the parma rucola pizza with a bottle of white wine. This is the best restaurant we've been to and we've already been to Sicily, Rome, Napoli - the pizza there wasn't as good as in the restaurant Mellows. The waiter Bharath is super friendly and helpful - we are super happy!

Mellow, Mosta: Big Portions, Bland Flavors As a local favorite, Mellow on a very busy Friday evening was a let down. The service was ok, but the food missed the mark. The portions were very big, but I suspect the size is used to compensate for a missing flavor profile. My pizza was very bland with cheap ingredients; other pizzas also seemed to use low-value ingredients. The burgers looked better than they actually are. Despite the size, the lack of quality means I won't come again.

Recently visited this chain establishment for the first time. Convenient location, good menu with food and desserts and very reasonable prices. The atmosphere here is cozy and comfortable, all the staff are very friendly.

I see lots of good reviews for this restaurant and wonder if we ate in a different place. I had a Texas pizza and could only just eat half. The diced bacon was undercooked and made the whole thing soggy. One person had the fish burger and the fish goujons were terrible, over battered and over cooked. One person had a rib eye steak which came out undercooked and cold. Sent back to be cooked more and was ok after that. At no stage did anyone ask how our food was.

XUFI (Olympic) Cafe' and Bistro, located in Mosta near the iconic Mosta Dome Church, offers a wide range of delectable ftajjar dishes made with fresh ingredients bursting with flavor. This popular restaurant is always bustling with locals and is known for its friendly staff. The spacious interior provides a comfortable dining experience along with WiFi access. Their menu includes various appetizing options, featuring generous portions at affordable prices.
Ideal for a quick relaxed lunch with no frills attached. Food is abundant and if good quality. Prices are affordable. The pinsa was good and so was the triple club sandwich.

Worst experience in my life. They smack into my sandwich completely raw mince instead of maltese sausage. Why? For what? What’s wrong with you there?! All sandwich screwed up with my mood for all morning, I was so shocked and I’ve never encountered anything like this anywhere and just burst into tears.. It's not just not tasty - it's dangerous to your health.
Hey X — Google review
XUFI Café & Bistro (or as we now fondly call it, “the Olympic feast”) was our very first stop on the Maltese food tour. As soon as we walked in, we were warmly welcomed by a waiter and promptly shown to our table—always a good start when you're starving and mildly sunburnt. We spent a few minutes sizing up the menu before the waiter popped back over to rattle off the specials. Feeling adventurous, we went for the snail stew and chicken wings to kick things off. Now, the chicken wings were absolutely massive—think pterodactyl, not pigeon. They were tasty and great value for money, but we had to box up the last two as we realised we’d never make it to our mains otherwise. The snails came in a generous portion too. Had we known the starters were enough to feed a small army, we might've skipped the mains altogether. But no—gluttony prevailed. We soldiered on and ordered the rabbit spaghetti and horse meat stew. The rabbit spaghetti, I’m afraid, was a bit of a let-down. It looked more like a rabbit had been flung onto the plate than thoughtfully prepared. There was barely any meat, just a chopped up carcus, and the garnish was, quite frankly, like chewing a shoelace. Not the culinary adventure we had in mind. The horse meat stew, on the other hand, was surprisingly nice—tender and flavourful. Sadly, the sides let it down: the mashed potato was clearly instant (you can always tell), the chips tasted like they'd been sitting out since breakfast, and the “seasonal veg” was more oil slick than side dish. Overall, a bit of a mixed bag. The service was ok, took our starters away and forgot to give us clean cutlery, had to ask a few times, though cleaning the table next to us was more important. Solid starters, but the mains galloped off course. Still, it made for a memorable first meal—and hey, at least we didn’t order dessert. Probably would've needed a forklift to get us out.

A simple place, no frills... But the food... The chef here is a real talent, that's some of the best swordfish I ever had! The caper sauce on point, the veg great and potatoes exceptional. I'll be back for sure for a lazy midweek lunch!

Lovely vibes in the restaurant! It took a while to be able to order and we also decided to skip dessert because it took a while and the table still wasn’t clear after we had finished eating. Disgusting Food, Rotten Beef & Worst Service Ever! I can’t believe what happened tonight. I’ve been a loyal customer for so long, ordering from this place every weekend through Wolt or Bolt, and even bringing friends and business meetings here. I supported this restaurant every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. But tonight changed everything. I decided to dine in this evening , and it was a total nightmare. We ordered Rigatoni Beef Ragu – and the beef was ROTTEN. The smell was so bad it made me sick, like rotten eggs. How can a restaurant even serve something like that? We couldn’t eat a single bite, and still, we were charged the full price! As if that wasn’t enough, we asked for pizza, and the staff told us the pizza kitchen was closed at 8:30 PM. Fine, we accepted that. But then the table right next to us sat down after us and ordered pizza without any problem! Lies and zero respect for customers. The service? HORRIBLE. When we went to pay, the waiter and the cashier started screaming at each other in their language, throwing things on the payment counter. We had to just stand there and wait while they fought. Completely unprofessional and embarrassing. I used to love this place, but after this experience, I will NEVER come back. You lost a loyal customer who brought business to your door every single weekend. This was disgusting, disappointing, and unforgettable for all the wrong reasons.

The menu boasts a variety of appetizers and main courses that leave nothing to be desired. The tripe is prepared with excellence and delivers an unforgettable taste experience. Additionally, the staff left a lasting impression with their friendliness, kindness, and warm hospitality. To sum it up, I highly recommend this restaurant for an unforgettable dining experience.

Traditional Maltese food, yes. Authentic interior, yes. Must go when in Mosta, yes! We received some nibbles: crackers with bigila and maltese bread with tomato paste and white beans. We ordered as starters the calamari fritti and rabbit spring rolls. Both dishes are homemade and fingerlicking good. The kids had a small portion of pasta bolognese and ricotta ravioli. Both dishes were pure and full of taste. We had the grilles octopus and the fish & chips. So many flavours in one dish. The fish & chips was plenty, we took a piece with us home. To finish it off we ordered a small cup of lime sorbet, perfect for digestion. I recommend everybody this restaurant. Quiet environment where locals eat. Out of the centre of Mosta (2 minute walk).

The fish and chips was very good and the ravioli with ricotta as well! Thanks to the staff, waiter owner and chef who made our lunch a real local experience with attention and quality. Super recommended!

One of the best meals and service I had. Staff is very welcoming, food is very wholesome and traditional, and the restaurant is rustic with a typical farmhouse relaxing atmosphere. Will definitely go here again!
