There’s no denying it – the temple itself is beautiful. The carved wooden gates look like the set piece of a Kurosawa film, and the massive camphor tree anchors the courtyard like it’s holding down all your regrets from floating away. But here’s the rub: every single corner charges an extra fee. Want to see the garden? Extra. Want to step up onto the temple deck? Extra. I half-expected to pay for the privilege of standing in the shade to avoid heat stroke. And the staff? Let’s just say if you interrupt them while they’re reading the morning Nikkei, they’ll look at you like you just farted in a submarine. There’s no warm welcome, no contextual guidance, just an efficient glare that says, “You’re disturbing the peace. Please pay at the next window.” Overall, it’s worth visiting if you’re already in Shibamata. The architecture and woodwork are spectacular, but the nickel-and-diming leaves a sour taste. Three stars – beautiful, yes, but it feels like the spiritual equivalent of a budget airline.

The sculptures are incredible—I had no idea something this amazing was here! The traditional Japanese garden is also very peaceful and calming. The temple is full of nostalgic charm and the warmth of Tokyo’s old-town atmosphere. Walking along the approach while snacking on dumplings really gives you the feeling of Shibamata. While the temple isn’t as large as I expected, its weathered buildings and historic main hall have a quiet presence that draws you in and makes you pause in admiration.

We went on a Sunday morning about 10am and spent roughly about 2 hours in this area. The main street has lots of sweets and snacks stores so do not be too quick to jump in the first store you see. the stores closer to the back may have better prices and variety. the whole area is not too big so you should be able to walk for around 30mins tops if you do not plan to stop and dine.

Absolutely stunning shrine. Goshuin available too! The carved wooden interior is absolutely incredible, each one is intricately designed and tells a different story, they are all hand carved by different artists. The gardens are absolutely stunning, buy a ticket and walk through barefoot, enjoy the wabi Sabi interior and the peaceful serene gardens.

Exotic and beautiful; the wooden sculptures are so intricate and breathtaking. Each of the wooden sculpture tells a story depicted from the lotus sutra. The garden is so beautiful... its from the late 1880s- tranquil and zen.

It's a beautiful temple. There is a short old street where you can have a good walk. Especially, there is an old house where is excellent.

At the end of taishakuten Sando is this temple, solemn, serene and picturesque. Large temple grounds and certainly Photo worthy. There’s a certain tranquil in this place

A great and huge park for local! No need to come here intentionally if you are a tourist, but it happens you are nearby, take a walk, take a break, read a book alongside by the lake. (It is from the Naka River) Also a good place for runner. Flat, no car, far enough for 5-10KM run. It is beautiful in early of Dec too. Lovely!

Mizumoto Park is a beautifully spacious spot perfect for quality time with family and friends. With its vast greenery, cycling paths, and peaceful walking trails, it’s easy to lose track of time and enjoy 5-6 relaxing hours surrounded by nature.

I loved the atmosphere here. The park is huge and the view of the trees against the waterfront is truly beautiful. The 🍁 foliage experience is mixed. Some of the smaller trees have already shed their leaves...the larger ones are in a mixed state of green, red and brown...may be next week it will be better view. Visited on 23 Nov 25.

One of the best parks I have seen so far in Japan. Beautifully cared and enough for anyone to have a great walk, alone, with family or even with your pet.

Very beautiful Park with incredible sceneries. You will find a different color to this park in different seasons. It's usually crowded on weekends with families. But I'm sure you will find a place to sit. Make sure to bring your own food and tenants. This park also allows BBQ. Barbecue is only allowed in one part of the park. On a weekend you will find different people doing different things in this park. The last time I went I saw a few people drawing the beautiful sceneries riding different looking bicycles rowing and soon. I'm sure everyone has something to enjoy in this park.

A really pretty park with nice bird viewing spots

We arrived about 40 minutes before museum closed so there was no crowds at all. The exhibit is about a long running television show since Showa era. The settings were replicas from the show which is nostalgic even to me since we were so culturally close. The kitchen setting was so much like my old house’s kitchen. Even though I didn’t watch the show but I was able enjoy its exhibitions and some clips from the show. Highly recommended.

It was a very lovely museum about the Japanese drama - Tora-san. Very informative and interactive. We enjoyed our visit a lot! We bought the combo ticket for 500 yen and it was definitely worth it!

I knew nothing about Tora-San or his films aside from doing research on Shibamata itself, I’m so glad I came to learn more about who he was and how his films impacted the town itself. The museum has actual set pieces from his movies and they’re interactive, as well. There’s also a cool diorama town seeing how life was during 1960s Japan; be warned though, the museum is completely in Japanese, but if you have an open mind and enough interest of Japanese culture you’ll be as enthralled as I was. Definitely a must visit when coming to Shibamata!

It was built in the Shibamata district, which is the filming location for the film's series. The museum features a collection of items and memorabilia related to the films, as well as a replica of the filming studio. Visitors can also watch behind-the-scenes footage and enjoy the atmosphere of the sets.👍

I'm a foreigner and do not know this person before. But the museum do an excellent job. All rooms have things would attract me very much, light and sound are perfected. I'm so enjoyed learning his biography from beginning till the end. There is a cafe to stop by and take rest in the same theme of the museum. The ticket is required and able to buy at the entrance.

If you like Tora-san, then this is a must. Filled with atmosphere and interactive displays. It was renovated a few years ago, and it looks very up to date and nice. Easy to walk through and enjoy, although there are not a lot of English explanations.

We stayed near Horikiri Garden. It was autumn, not the season for other flowers to bloom. The place was perfect for a morning jog. There's so much to see, but this tree is so beautiful that I had to take a selfie with it.

A beautiful iris garden in a quiet and pretty neighborhood. If irises are in full bloom it's definitely worth a visit, and make sure you take a stroll throught the residential neighborhood and enjoy it.

This has become of my favorite place as soon i went there, there were a lot of flowers. Few sitting places and a nice vibe about the place. Really loved it and enjoyed it. I would recommend go there during flower season. It is a great place for any flower lovers

(Written on November 17, 2025) I believe this is one of the standout tsukemen shops in Tokyo, rivaling “Michi” in Kameari. The soup is packed with umami, distinguished by a thin film on the surface reminiscent of hot milk. The noodles are chilled and firm, and dipping them into the warm broth before savoring them is truly a blissful moment.

Out of this world! The best tsukemen I have tried so far, and it really deserves the name "King of Tsukemen" in couple of years ago. For the first-time comer, I recommend you to order Rich Soy-Sauce with Fish Flavoured Soup Tsukemen (w/ 3 kinds of Char Siu) (チャーシュー濃厚魚介つけめん) with the size of normal 150g (並) or middle 250g (中) size, because the large size (大) is 400g. The smell inside the shop has a different level of deliciousness. I don't have much thing to say about the flavor because everything seems perfect and matching to each others. The soup is a balance of every flavor; saltiness, sweetness, sourness, umami. The thick noodle is super duper tender and spring-like at the same time, which is really enjoyable to chew, I wish the noodle does not run out when I was eating. There are 2 roasted chashu, 2 low-cooked chashu, and 2 low-cooked chicken for the toppings, and these are well-selected and cooked. It is a perfect match to the scrumptious soup. Personally, I like the low-cook one the most. Apart from the tsukemen, the shop has a very well-organized system. You go there, check the expected time that you could go in which is shown in front of the door, then buy the food ticket and come back at the specified time. You can even download the application of this restaurant and check the availability. For me, I arrived the shop at 18:10 and needed to wait for 40 minutes.

Worth the trip. I ordered #10, rich broth with 3 kinds of meat. As shown in the menu pic, the light salt bowl is only available Wed, Fri and Sun, and the shoyu bowl is on Tue, Thu, Sat so plan accordingly. Super flavorful tonkotsu with strong fish flavors. I slurped every last bit of it. The rich broth is quite heavy, and left me feeling like I ate too much salt though, so you may need a couple hours to walk it off. I ate Ramen with light broth the last couple days, so it wasn't too bad to go heavier today. But I wouldn't be able to do this every day. I didn't like the darker braised pork as much. It was too chewy for me. But the chicken and white chashu were buttery soft and moist. Flawless. The man managing the door spoke basic English and was helpful. Line up on the right side to place your order at the ticket machine. Shove about 2000 yen worth of cash and click the number of each item and topping you want from the menu. You get a small ticket for each button you push and you give the stack of tickets to the door man. He'll give you another receipt with a number. A whiteboard outside tells you what time to come back. For us, we arrived at 11:25 and got a 11:55 time. We noticed that those who came at 11:45 were asked to come back at 12:45. So come at or before 11 AM for the shortest wait. Lunch is served only from 11-3. When you come back, you wait on the left side of the door. Each seating is about 15 minutes long. They wait for everyone to empty out and everyone from that time batch enters at the same time. Pretty efficient I think. You sit where the man tells you and the chefs will give you what you ordered without any other interaction necessary.

Very long waiting time. Queue to take a number and come back few hours later. Tried the signature tsukemen. The sauce is quite nice but the ramen is cold? It's so weird because the weather outside is already freezing cold but they still serve cold noodle. Would've taste much better if it's warm. There are several other ramen store nearby with much shorter waiting time and better quality.

Voted as the number 1 ramen store in Tokyo for two years! The place is not as crowded as Tsuta ramen and they have a very efficient queueing system. You purchase your ticket and they will tell you the time to come back. The noodle is cold and the soup/dipping sauce is hot. They are really delicious and the portion is huge. Great value for money since it's only 930(with egg) and it's very filling. Definitely recommend it! Great ramen!

Kawachiya in Shibamata offers delicious Japanese cuisine, including standout Unagi and Donburi. While I found the rice a bit too sticky for my preference, I appreciated the restaurant's comfortable atmosphere. Overall, Kawachiya was a decent dining experience.

To me the food here is alright. For the price and experience, it wasn't a wow for me. We did the the unagi set. It came with the unagi over rice, a soupz and a bit of pickle. That set was fine. In general the unagi was good. They are Japanese eels so the meats are lean and more chewy texture. The did not over-do the sauce, but instead they have a power seasoning you can sprinkle on your eels to eat. The soup came with it was meh. We also tried the Hitsumabushi unagi set. It came with unagi over rice, soup, picked and a raw slimy mash potatoes, and blank soup in a tea pot, and other toppings. They came with an instructions how to eat it. Maybe we didn't understand it, but we tried and didn't like the raw potatoes things and blank soup mixing. In short, I would just with the simple unagi set. We also tried a few appetizers. Prawn tempura was good as usual. We didn't like the liver roll. It has the bitter taste of liver which is expected but it was also cold and nothing special. One of the main reason we came here is to try the koi fish sashimi. And we didn't like it. I don't really like raw fish but even my family members who like raw fish also didn't like the texture of the fish. It doesn't smell fishy, so it's fresh and kinda on a chewy side. Maybe we are not used to these fish. We spent about 250 for 8 people.

🟨 We went to Shibamata's retro town ( which is Tora-san's movie set town). 🟫 If you had watched Tora-san's films in the 1970s, you would have known the alleyways used in the movies are actually the real-life streets of Shibamata town. 🟢 I was a small child growing up in the early 1970s and Tora-san's films were being broadcasted regularly in Singapore back then. ✅️ My schoolmates & people of my generation grew up on a massive diet of Japanese 1960s and 1970s pop culture, music and films. 😅 That is why I was greatly inspired by Japan's wave of pop cultural influences. Anyway, I remember Tora-san's movies very well and chose to visit the beloved vintage town of his. 🔷️ By the time we reached Shibamata from Tokyo, both of us ( hubby and me) were feeling ravenous, and as we strolled by the quaint cobblestone alleys, we stumbled upon an Unagi-don restaurant. 🧡 And you know me, I love eating grilled Unagi meat aka eel meat. 🟩 So off we went into the restaurant and I ordered my Unagi-jyu and hubby had his assorted Tempura Moriawase. ✅️ The food was delicious and the lady boss or owner or manageress was so friendly, cheerful and kind. 💛 I will never forget this beautiful Unagi restaurant which exudes these ancient vintage vibes. 🖤 I Love Shibamata and hope to return one day to it again. 😊 to the late Tora-san = The people of Shibamata have preserved this town very well as a homage to his films.

Famous traditional grilled eel is so delicious. Tempura is also good. This restaurant operate quite long time. You can enter from the old walking street in front of the temple as well or parking and access on another side.

Do note the restaurant starts grilling the eel only after your order has been placed. This results in a wait time of 30 mins before your meal arrives.

Had the opportunity of trying Yanagawa nabe in this traditional restaurant. The staff was very nice.
