Kobe

Kobe is a city on Osaka Bay in central Japan. It is known for its signature marbled beef and scenic setting of mountains framing the harbor. The Ikuta Shrine, dating to the 3rd century, is among Japan's oldest Shinto shrines. Antique cable cars connect Kobe to Mt. Rokko, which offers panoramic views over the port. Beyond the Mount Rokko hills are the outdoor hot springs of Arima Onsen.

Botanical garden
Nature & Parks
Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens is a large botanical garden located on the hill of the mountain, accessible by hiking or cable car. It offers themed areas with a variety of flowers and herbs in full bloom, along with restaurants and a gift shop. Visitors can enjoy picturesque views of Kobe from this popular spot, which also features a small museum showcasing how herbs and flowers are used to create scents.
Visited this gem of a place as part of my Kobe day trip from Osaka. Would I recommend this place? Yes! While it is not as iconic, it is a great place with lesser crowd to enjoy the view and pretty plants at own pace. It was sunny in June. At the ticketing counter, we had to redeem physical ticket from our online booking before we can enter the cable car. At the top, umbrella can be borrowed FoC. There were a cafe, souvenir, and perfume shop. It was fun to check out fragrances made from different flowers. I recommend taking the cable car up, and walking down to midway for the return trip. This way, you can see more plants on the way down including some of the prettiest photo spots, a glasshouse, and most importantly, lavender ice cream to battle the heat of the sun! We spent 2-3 hours before lunch time.

You MUST come here if you want some nice shots for your profile pictures. The gardens were beautiful, and thank God we came at the right timing where the sun was setting. A good time to be here will be a sunny day 3:30pm - 5pm JP Time, because their last cable car ride is at 5:15pm to head back down. They have a Bottom Garden, Middle Garden, and Top Garden. The cable-car roundtrip ride costs 2000¥ very worth it. The ride had an amazing view too!

This was a true highlight of our trip to Japan. The place is beautiful! Starting with the cable car up, the views are fantastic, you can see clear across and they even slow the cable car to get photo of the hidden waterfall. Once you get to the top there is another gorgeous view but you also have an opportunity to stop and take a break and have a little something to eat and drink. The best part of visiting is that you have time to take your perfect photo (not me I am a walk n shoot type of girl) the hustle and bustle you get in other places doesn’t happen here. Everyone waited patiently. This is the perfect place to get your zen, oh and they have hammocks throughout the gardens so you can truly enjoy your surrounds.

We went a bit later in the day. Be prepared to do lots of walking. We bought a round trip ticket for the rope line. We took the rope line up around 4. I don't suggest it if you're scared of heights, but the views are beautiful. You could just walk the entire way if you don't want to ride the rope line. There was an event going on while we were there and it was so much fun! There were fictional characters, riddles, and a story you follow throughout the garden as you collect stamps. It was mostly in Japanese and we didn't get a chance to solve the riddle. In the end, anyone who at least got 1 stamp got a prize. We had the food at the middle rest stop and it was delicious. I wanted to do the footbath but it was under renovation. They have wheelchair access throughout and many things to do like classes to make your own sent with herbs from the garden. But we didn't get to participate in any of the classes since we got there pretty late. The last ride back down the rope line is at 5:15pm. We went back down at 5:10.

This was my favorite part of Kobe. Beautiful ropeway ride up the mountain, only took a few minutes. Beautiful stroll from the top to midway down the mountain, then we took the ropeway back. They had a fun stamp activity booklet for my kids to do. They also liked taking photos. Many places to sit and lots of hammocks to rest in. Lovely way to spend an afternoon
Victoria L — Google review
This place was wonderful. The scenic ropeway is right next to Shin-Kobe station. So if you are in Osaka. Pay $15 for a non reserved seat on the Shinkansen and 12 minutes later you are in Kobe, it's a short ride. You can book tickets or buy them there. Great views. I wish I went at night. Wonderful. There is a glasshouse with a forest and water features. Some cafe's are there too. There is also a walking trail for the fit people and hammocks to rest and enjoy the view for us ordinary folk.
Peter P — Google review
We enjoyed our brief visit here. We didn't have to wait long for the cable car to the top, I think weekends would be busy. It's a great view to see the huge bay. Plenty of eating places at the top and a nice gift shop at the lower station when you get off the cable car. There's a lovely waterfall you can see from the cable car. If you want you can just buy a 1 way ticket to the top and walk down past it but it's about 45 minutes to walk and our feet were already aching after walking round Kobe!
Christine R — Google review
We spent the afternoon here. It was relaxing. The variety of plants and attention the hard work of the gardeners is clearly evident. Beautifully arranged. There is a sample table where you can smell the essential oils. Excellent variety. I only wish I had more time to experience each one. I enjoyed how different sections were categorised. It gave me some ideas from my home garden in Australia. There is a hiking trail that you can explore as well. Unfortunately, we were not able to see anything when we got to the top. We were hoping it would be a lookout and we could take some good photos from that vantage point. However, there were other locations where we could take photos of the city views and gardens below. If you enjoy being in nature. This will not disappoint. This would be a place that would be great to see in each season.

Mount Rokkō, also known as Rokko-san, is a prominent attraction in Kobe, Japan. It is part of the large mountain range that includes Mt. Rokko and offers stunning views of the surrounding area. Visitors can access the peak via cable cars and enjoy an observation deck with panoramic vistas. The area is also famous for its night views, considered one of Japan's three famous night views.
A wonderful, less traveled series of hikes and shops at the top of a mountain in Kobe! Went on a weekday in April and it was empty. All shops open, but no tourists or locals. Wonderful, and easy to get around by bus once up there.
Zeke — Google review
A less commercial sightseeing experience compared to Mount Fuji or Hakone. Very chilly and windy but an enjoyable experience. Cable car was unfortunately under renovation when we visited so there was a shuttle bus service (1100yen round trip) instead that goes up to the observatory. You need to take another bus (380yen one way) up to the ropeway station. The ropeway was 1850yen for a round trip. It was crowded when taking the ropeway to the top but very quiet when going back down.

Been up it twice now and cant recommend it enough. Its such a beautiful hike for all levels of hikers. What I Like a lot ist that it has lots of Terrain and scenery changes that never make it boring. Its also a great challenge If you want to do it as quick as possible. The mountain only really hast one popular viewspot so Take than Info consideration. There is a hut to eat with great food at the top but they only Take Cash, so Take Care. For those still reading, my time was 2:07 from the omoto station or whatever it was called. For those seeking a Challenge, Go for it ;)
MeliodasSF — Google review
We only went to rokko sanjo station and stopped at the tenren observatory. It was a chilly day and very windy so we decided not to keep going. You have to pay a few transfers to get up to the first observation point. We took a bus to rokkomichi, and then paid for the cable car. If u wanted to keep going, u would have to pay for another cable car or bus. The cost adds up. While the view was nice (and likely nicer at night or sunset), there was nothing immediately to do outside of rokko sanjo. The one cafe was closed that day… there were no touristy shops or trinket shops or eateries nearby (might be a good thing depending on who you talk to)… and i found interesting that the area around the observatory was unkempt - weeds and dead leaves growing. I just find that unusual given that other touristy spots are very well maintained and greenery is always consistently manicured. We went on a weekday and perhaps it is busier and livelier on weekends. Admittedly we did not venture further up where there seems to be more touristy things (a tourist info center, a garden, possibly hiking opps), but we werent sure whether it would be worth paying more to risk things being closed since we were there mid afternoon and the weather was not super permitting.

Best sightseeing. Enjoy the beautiful view during sunrise or sunset. I visited here during winter. January 2024. Windy and cold
Fendi — Google review
Do check the weather forecast unlike me. Took the tram up because it was foggy and drizzling. Then decided to take the bus to R07 Garden Terrace. Proceeded to hike up via road to this summit. 40minutes one way. There are also trails leading to the summit, but they start and end on the paved road.
Tristan G — Google review
Starting from one side of the mountain and hiking towards Arima Onsen is you best bet. Try not to do it the opposite and follow through with the hike to a train station. Don't use a bus, they are a pain in the nuts to ride lol. Buses are expensive and you can get motion sickness from them turning left and right every minute. Kids were barfing in bags on the way back. lol! I recommend hiking in the fall, the foliage is beautiful and you might run into a boar or two, plus the insects aren't so bad.

Good place to have a great view of city. Also it’s fun to ride a cable car. We didn’t spend that much time here but it would be too bad to miss this nice view from the top of the mountain.

Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Nestled in the vibrant Sannomiya district of Kobe, Ikuta Jinja stands as a testament to Japan's rich cultural heritage, having been established in the early 3rd century by Empress Jingu. This revered Shinto shrine is dedicated to Wakahirume-no-Mikoto, the goddess of weaving, and serves as a serene escape from the lively streets nearby.
Quiet and clean shrine in the heart of the city. Perfect for a peaceful afternoon walk or just to relax and clear your mind. A hidden gem worth visiting when you're in Kobe.

The Ikuta-jinja shrine offers a relaxing and tranquil environment right in the heart of the city, perfect spot to relax and escape the urban city atmosphere. When we visited, there weren't much people, so no need to worry about crowds or queuing in here. Worth a visit if you're exploring central Kobe.

This is a very nice shrine to visit while in Japan. If you have time and are staying in Osaka it is located approximately 40 minutes by train from Osaka. From Kobe station it is about a 15 minute walk to the shrine. Here you can get your official stamps on your book (for those who collect stamps when visiting temples) for a cost of 500 Yen. You can also purchase the books here. The temple itself is free to visit. I would highly recommend a visit to this temple.

The colors were magnificent and the jinja grounds was very big! I loved the tall tori gates, and how central it was in the city. I just didn’t expect there to be so much people. It was kinda hard to enjoy it. And it’s unfair to say that it’s the shrine’s fault, if we base it on beauty alone it deserves a 5 star. But 4 star just because it wasn’t as peaceful and serene as I thought it would be. But still a must see if you’re in Kobe.

Ikuta Shrine is a Shinto shrine established by Empress Jingu and apparently one of the oldest shrines in the country. It is dedicated to the water deity, Watasumi, as the Empress built it after almost dying in a shipwreck. Peaceful shrine and i managed dto get a goshuin here.

This area was redeveloped after the 1995 earthquake and now features a mix of shopping areas, including Mosaic, South Mall, and North Mall, with department stores, boutique shops, and numerous dining options.
Beautiful waterfront, great for a walk. Plenty of shops and food selections. Kids will have fun at the Anpanman Museum. The Ferris wheel costs 400 yen, cash only. You only get one full turn on your ride.

For $200 AU a night including breakfast you simply can't do better. This is in the best location for the Kobe harbour and Mosaic. For this price it doesn't get better. We have stayed in the Hilton and had worse experiences for 4 times the price.

If you're a food enthusiast or simply enjoy indulging in exquisite cuisine, then experiencing Kobe beef should be on your travel itinerary. Renowned worldwide, Kobe beef is a type of wagyu beef known for its marbling and tenderness. It originates from purebred black Japanese cattle of the Tajima breed and must meet strict criteria to earn the label of Kobe beef. While it's associated with the city of Kobe, these cattle are actually raised in Hyogo Prefecture.
Once in a lifetime experience to taste the finest beef worldwide! I‘d recommend you get the fillet, sure it costs the most but it’s worth every penny. We compared all the different cuts and the fillet is truly amazing in taste and texture! We got a full lunch course and the staff is very professional, kind and experienced. I’d recommend a reservation, we got lucky and got a table right away, but it was packed.
Chikara W — Google review
Honestly we failed to get a reservation.. really sad. However, in order to really experience and taste the legendary Kobe beef, we took a 1 hour train ride from Osaka to Kobe to try our luck. Walked in at 11, and to our surprise, the stall actually accommodated us (yay!!!), but need us to finish our meal with the hour, as the seats are reserved at 12. Of course!! Beggars cannot be choosers! Selected the competition meat and did not regret. Yes, really pricy, but, quality comes as a price. Both the wife and myself enjoyed the meal so much, but the set meal was so complete, that we could not finish the vegetables which are of equally great quality! The chef did a great work with the beef and the beef simply melts in your mouth. If anything, this is an experience that can be experienced again in future when I’m back in Kobe! Really enjoyed the meal and really appreciate the team for accommodating us!! Thank you very much!!
Erik X — Google review
The steak is AMAZING. I got the Kobe filet A5. It was so tender, so juicy, so much aroma. Cooked to perfection. Perfect steak. The vegetables were also delicious, and i am usually not a big vegetable fan. The service was very good. Everything you could wish for, but still not pushy. The cook also was very food-focused, explained everything without making you seem unknowledgable. Even gave suggestions for combinations of food, sauces and spices. Very good chef! You get one price for your desired meat with a preselected menu (vegetables, rice, salad and a coffee). Of course its pricey, but in my opinion totally worth it for a once in a lifetime experience of the perfect steak.
Prince T — Google review
A+++ experience but for the price, must expect it. First service was great. Language is not an issue and they have a service person watching u all the time. Next, individual chef and he will cook everything to your liking and even take a photo for you. Next, the quality of the beef is great. Not cheap though. Kobe beef at its finest. I don’t like too much fats so rump and fillet. Great and well worth it- in my eyes. But not for everyday.
Paul Y — Google review
We made our reservation well in advance to us arriving in Japan so we were sure to get a seat here. I doesn't seem that you have to be that far in advance though. The atmosphere, staff and food are all of the highest class here. After the reception we were guided to our seats and was greeted by our personal chef who would prepare our beef. He also guided us through every piece and every bite, ensuring we got all the taste. We even got certificate and family tree of our beef!! The price is in the high end, but for the food and experience it is well worth it and I would love to come again!
Frederik F — Google review
The place is crowded and seats many people. Felt very cramped. Didn't enjoy the experience for this price point dinner. Chef took tooo long to fry the garlic. Beef didn't have the wow factor. That one piece beef is my dinner set, paid 12650 yen. The rest are my other friends' sharing. Two of my travel mates had diahorrea & vomiting the next day. March 2025.
TC J — Google review
Ready for a huge tip? Tried both the certified Kobe sirloin alongside the 'Strictly Selected' wagyu sirloin (same cow just without the Kobe certificate). Both A5 wagyu. Marbling on both were the same. The strictly selected one was actually better in taste and texture and much much cheaper. You can share your beef with your partner if you are going there in a pair. If you still want to try both types to compare, I'd suggest getting the bigger portion of the Strictly Selected wagyu and a smaller portion of the Kobe one. Service from the chef was excellent. Very engaging. Service from the waiters was just average. They forgot to serve us our coffee and tea which was part of the set. We went there with our 1 year old and they have no baby seats. We knew that ahead of time and was prepared to have him on our lap. Very challenging but it's wagyu - we had to take up the challenge. Oh and you must definitely book ahead. We went at 230pm and it was less than half full. But they won't allow walk-ins even then.

I can’t say enough good things about this restaurant. It truly represents the epitome of Japanese style food/customer experience, right from the moment you walk out of the elevator. My chef for the night was Minoru-san, he was very warm and mindful on keeping a conversation with me throughout the entire meal, whilst showcasing his perfect Teppanyaki cooking skills. Everything was cooked to perfection, the highlight of course being the Kobe beef cubes seared medium rare. Once again, thank you to Chef Minoru-san and the other wonderful staff members at Steak Ishida for making my first dinner at Kobe an unforgettable experience. P.S. Thanks for the recommendations on Japanese Chinese food too Minoru-san! 😄

Really great restaurant, our chef Shiiba was amazing cooked our beef medium rare and it tasted out of this world the beef melted in our mouths. We got the 16,000 yen meal set and it was more food than we thought it was like a 8 course meal which we did not expect. I also recommend you get the garlic rice they made like friend rice with meat!.

Booked a reservation here for lunch to try out A5 Kobe beef. The course we got is served as it's cooked so you should eat as you get your meals. The meat itself was amazing and just melts in your mouth. Other than that, the fried rice was memorable to me too. Very friendly staff.

It's an experience, for sure. Meat was juicy and tender, fatty bits were delicious in a melt-in-your- mouth kinda way. Be prepared to pay a bomb - i paid Y$17000 for the Select Kobe Beef set. It's one of those "once in a lifetime" experience, so consider this a been there, done that.

We ordered the 110g sirloin kobe beef plate. This came with appetisers, soup, salad, side dishes, dessert and tea/coffee. Sake seemed never ending, always topped up! The hostess was very attentive, we are grateful to her for squeezing us in without a reservation. Each and every item was amazing! The chef was the highlight (aside from the kobe beef of course)! Taguchi was funny, entertaining and had the best recommendations on how to eat each piece with maximum flavour. He was very professional and his culinary work is a form of art. We had the best time! Kobe Steak Sai-Dining offers an unforgettable dining experience with its elegant and minimalist setting where prime cuts of Japanese Black beef are grilled at the table. The restaurant is renowned for serving top-grade A5-ranked Kobe beef, known for its finely marbled, melt-in-the-mouth tenderness. Guests can savor the juicy flavors of the beef with every bite.
If you are looking for the best, melt in your mouth Kobe beef around, the lunch menu may not be the right choice for that. But, their prices are very reasonable, the staff is exceptional and overall a great experience! We visited during lunch hours and there are only 3 types of beef to choose from. 2 Kobe beef and another Japanese wagyu. We ended up getting the "Marbled Kobe" beef round and the "Japanese Wagyu" as the B course, which include hors d'oeuvres, soup, salad and dessert. The chef correctly assumed that we wanted to try both and offered to portion the different meats evenly and of course we accepted. We were asked how would we liked it cooked, I asked the chef how he suggests it should be prepared and he mentioned "medium" so we went with that. The hors d'oeuvres comes out first. It was beautifully plated seared tuna with pickled vegetables. The soup was next. It was mushroom based and was very balanced and subtle. After that was the salad. Honestly, it's just a plain ol' side salad. Acts as a good palate cleanser and nothing more. Then the chef brings out the beef. They let you take a picture of if before it goes on the grill. Well, it's a tease because the vegetables get grilled first. Then the beef goes on with a short "fire show". And finally you get to enjoy the beef. No one really cares about the grilled vegetables and you aren't coming here for that. Now to the beef, well, it's real Japanese wagyu alright. It certainly tastes the part. There's no mistaking the very distinct, sharp umami of real wagyu. However, these cuts of beef do not melt in your mouth. There is a chew to this cut, but it is still tender. I feel like this is very important to keep in mind if this is your first time trying the "legendary" Kobe beef. While I do prefer the A5 "melt in your mouth" version, I get flavor/texture fatigue from that and can only eat small amounts. This version is closer to extremely good regular steak texture. I did not tire of this and kind of wanted more after eating the whole thing. As far as the difference between the Kobe beef and regular wagyu go, it was very hard to tell. It was subtle and I lost track of which cut was which. Ultimately, one was ever so slightly more tender and flavorful than the other. I don't think you can go wrong with either. Dessert is served with tea or coffee at another table. We physically moved for this. And it was just ice cream......a relatively normal but clean finish to a great meal. I can easily recommend Kobe Steak Sai if you are looking for a sit down meal to enjoy Kobe Beef or even just Japanese Wagyu. I don't believe the lunch menu includes the "melt in your mouth" A5 cuts of beef but the price reflects that. I would expect the meal would cost 3 times as much for that kind of meat. The staff here are friendly and attentive and there is an English Menu available. I'd return for dinner next time to try the "real menu" out but lunch was still excellent.

Amazing Kobe Wagyu Teppanyaki! The Kobe beef was incredibly tender and flavorful—definitely worth trying! Mr. Miyai cooked it perfectly, and Fred provided excellent service. An amazing experience all way long ! Probably the best beef I’ve ever tasted. And aside from the meat, everything was incredible, from the soup to the grilled vegetables. I'm very happy to celebrate our anniversary here. The food at the restaurant is of excellent quality, especially the beef. We also had the pleasure of meeting Fred from Hong Kong, who kindly introduced each dish to us with great attention and warmth. The restaurant prepared a beautiful cake for us, and the artwork on the dessert plate was stunning. It was a truly satisfying meal!

This was an amazing experience! This was our first time in Kobe and our server Fred spoke perfect English and gave good recommendations for what to get according to what our preferences were. The service was very friendly and organized, and it was definitely such an enjoyable experience and favorite meal of the trip. The beef was amazingly tender and delicious and I definitely want to come back again!

Fantastic kobe beef and overall experience. The staff were kind and friendly, and the chef was very experienced. My chef was Hamasaki - he was kind and experienced. His plates had great presentation and the food was delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant!

This was our first Teppanyaki experience in Japan and it didn’t let down. From the service to the quality of beef, overall experience was one of the best meals we’ve had in Japan.

Gyudon restaurant
Restaurant
Kobe Gyudon Hiroshige is a cozy and popular restaurant known for its specialty gyudon bowls made with high-quality Kobe beef and topped with options like raw egg. While some visitors have experienced long waits due to the limited seating and cooking process, many find the wait worthwhile once they taste the juicy beef and flavorful soup. The portion sizes are satisfying, and adding an onsen egg is highly recommended.
We waited 90 minutes to get a table, and it was worth it. The single menu item (thinly sliced Kobe beef and onions on rice) is perfect. You choose the size, and whether you want to add a raw egg, poached egg, or no egg. It came with a cup of soup and a side of pickled sweet potato. This is a one-man show. He greets guests, busses/cleans, cooks, runs the register. He was very warm and friendly, and never seemed in a hurry. That’s great once you’re inside eating (there’s only 10 seats, but I never saw more than 8 in use) but for those waiting in line, it definitely makes you wish he had some help to go faster.

Lucky me. No queue when I reach there. Not a long waiting for the food. Tender beef with gentle test. All dishes are very natural. The soup makes me feel like being home. Love!!!

I would say good food yes but not the amazing place I was expecting. Very overpriced and server didn’t bring an egg which I’m pretty certain is part of the meal. Didn’t like to ask because wasn’t that important to me. At ¥3620 for a lunch there’s probably better priced and better Kobe places around. Went once and that’s enough.

Food is fine. But remember it only got ONE staff, so everything takes very long time. I waited for one hour (all seat occupied, and 4 people ahead of me) to be seated, and waited another approx. 40 minutes for the meal. I think it is good if you have afford the time cost.

Excellent place to est wagyu on a budget. The food is very good, the lady that welcome and serve is very nice as well.

The restaurant is intimate and cozy, just like what you are looking for from a truly Japanese place. The beef was extraordinary and melts in your mouth. The owner is extremely kind and welcoming, he found the way to prepare 3 big portions for us even though he was almost out of beef for the day. And the closing sweets that he gave us were the extra mile! ごちそうさまでした!

We were lucky enough to eat for for lunch and it was a great choice. The single menu item on offer was a hearty beef and rice bowl with accompanying vegetable soup and side of pickle. The beef was melt-in-your-mouth good and the service was very quick for a single-staff restaurant. Highly recommend.

Steak house
KOKUBU Steak House is a must-visit for those seeking high-quality Kobe beef. Reservations are essential due to limited seating, but the experience is well worth the effort. The restaurant offers authentic A5 Kobe beef, ensuring a unique and delectable dining experience for every patron. Visitors rave about the exceptional quality of the Tajima beef, emphasizing its pure lineage and unparalleled taste.
Loved it. Rare find and absolutely locally authentic. Authentic Tajima Kobe Beef that melts in your mouth cooked with such detail and care. Lovely chef who is direct, speaks English and genuine. Fun fact: both his parents have samurai last name and he comes from this authentic lineage. I loved the sweet sake (they have both types one sweet and one dry), the lovely lady also helped share more of Japanese culture and the cups and significance and meaning. Chef is also a wine expert and collector. Food, drink and experience was incredible and lovely conversation. Highly recommend. Reservations only, do book in advance.

I got a reservation at this restaurant after trying for 3 years so I was really excited and looking forward to the experience. I have been to many Japanese steakhouses in Kobe and around the country. I had high expectations after reading the reviews and considering how difficult it was to get a reservation. All in all it was an average experience. The food was ok. Not bad. The chefs wine selection and knowledge was probably the highlight. He was friendly enough but seemed rushed and ready for us to leave after our meal as he had plans to meet friends or something. Our reservation was at 7pm and we felt rushed out by 9pm. The portion was pretty small for the price even compared to other A5 restaurants in the area. The menu choices were very limited and cheap as other reviews have pointed out. I was excited for the eclectic atmosphere but it just seemed cluttered and dusty and dirty and not enjoyable. Overall I’d not return to this place and would not recommend it to my friends.

Highly recommended and do remember to make reservations. Kokubu was recommended by a Kobe native I met in California and what started as a side quest from our stay in Osaka to try the restaurant, turned out to be a star of our trip so far! The setting was intimate and charming, and the Chef and waitress were warm and most welcoming. The menu was simple and easily one of the best meals I've experienced, from Chef's special miso soup blend, tasty grilled vegetables to the beautifully marbled and perfectly cooked beef. Thank you for a memorable and deliciously satisfying dining experience, Kokubu!

We travelled all the way to Kobe to dine at Sir Kokubu’s very popular steakhouse! Remember to make a reservation as his intimate restaurant seats just 6 guests a night. It was a delightful experience from start to end watching this one man show go down. We started with a salad, then grilled vegetables and then finally the A5 Tajima Wagyu beef that was the star of the show!! Mr Kokubu even took out the raw hunk of meat to show us the certified KOBE stamp on the cow! The meat itself with beautiful marbled with distinct striations of fat that true to its appearance was melt in your mouth … love love love the unctuous mouthfeel. 150g was perfect for me and my husband enjoyed every bit of his 200g! As the other reviewers mentioned the garlic fried rice, we got it too. It was great! A nice filling end to the meal. Also a special shoutout to the ginger ale which somehow tasted to fresh and spicy!! Loved it! Thanks for entertaining us for the night Mr Kokubu! It was so fascinating to hear how you descended from an original samurai family and we were wowed to hear about how long you have been cooking. See you again!

One of the highlights during my visit to Japan. My friends and I visited in 2018 and were very fortunate to have snagged a reservation here. The chef was very friendly and spoke great English. He was educating us on the heritage of Kobe beef and showing us the authenticity of his products with certificates that showed which cow the meat we were going to consume was coming from. To this day the words “black Tajima cow” still echoes in my head. The meat here was hands down the best I’ve consumed in my life. After our first bite, it was just silence, my friends and I just looked at each other and the hair on our arms were raised. Genuine goosebumps! The service staff were very friendly and near the end of our meal, I believe the chef’s mother came out and made us some delicious garlic fried rice. This has been one of the best meals of my life and I reflect on it fondly from time to time. Please do yourself a favour and dine here, I absolutely recommend it!

Culinary gem. A no frills joint, honouring Kobe beef. Nori-san was so wonderful — the food was delicious and the hospitality was great. It’s a family business with a legit samurai heritage that has been running this business for over 50 years. The best way to authentically savour Kobe beef. Reservations only place.

A short walk from Kobe Station, Kokubu is my go-to spot for Kobe beef. Reservations are essential but straightforward - I made mine over the phone, and the chef, who speaks English, handled it effortlessly. The menu offers two portion options: 150g or 200g. I opted for the 200g, and it was exceptional - perfectly marbled, melt-in-your-mouth tender, and bursting with rich flavour. I also added the garlic fried rice, which complemented the richness of the steak beautifully and brought balance to the meal. Highly recommended for an unforgettable dining experience.
