Asuka-dera, a venerable religious complex dating back to the 6th century, is a must-see spot on any cycling itinerary in the Japanese countryside. Located near quaint rice fields, it offers a glimpse into Japan's ancient history and culture. The site includes remains of Japan's first Buddhist temple, with artifacts buried underground and well-preserved structures above ground. Asuka-dera also features an ancient bronze Buddha statue known as Asuka Daibutsu.
The oldest Buddhist temple in Japan, and the oldest statue at 1400 years old. A bit out of the way, but we'll worth a visit.

A peaceful and historical temple with Japan’s oldest Buddha statue. The calm atmosphere makes it a nice place to visit and reflect.

The main attraction is their Buddha statue in the main hall. I was by myself and I could enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Stunning views of the mountains and rice fields. It's worth the stop if you are going to visit Okadera temple, just up the road. Very nice and peaceful temple.

A must-visit in Japan🇯🇵 if you fancy Han Buddhist History @ East Asia🌞 Asuka-dera (Hōkō-ji) was built as the family temple of the Soga clan between the end of the 6th century and the beginning of the 7th century, and was the first Buddhist temple in Japan to have a fully-fledged temple complex. Two Great Monks 惠慈(Goguryeo) and 慧聪(Baekje) came Japan to preach Han Buddhism and stayed @ Asuka-dera, highly recommend to visit here and pay respect to Han Buddhism Route📖

Modest but impressive Buddhist temple homing the oldest statue of Buddha in Japan. Complemented by garden and a small museum. Possibility to ring the bell of the temple (with respect.)

Great anciant Buddhist temple in Japan! Gilt bronze statue of Great Buddha, called Asuka Daibutsu is impressive.

Very far off the beaten path (40 minute walk from the nearest train station) but worth the trip. This is the site of the first Buddhist temple in Japan, and home to the oldest Buddha statue in Japan. Unlike most temples, you can take pictures of everything. It's a very simple temple, but the history surrounding it makes the whole place feel almost otherworldly. Buddhism shaped the culture and history of Japan, and that all started right here. If you're spending time in Nara, and you care about Japanese Buddhist history, this is a must visit.

Okadera is a centuries-old temple located on a hillside with stunning flower gardens and commanding views over the plain below. The temple features a 3-story pagoda, a huge clay Buddha, and beautiful grounds. It is considered one of the two most famous temples in the Asuka area, along with Asukadera. Okadera's rich history and masterful craftsmanship are evident in its vibrant colors and reverent atmosphere.
Okadera may be the inspiration for the Dragon Ball anime. The legend of the temple's founding tells the story of a dragon marauding the people in the village that is present day Asuka, and of the Buddhist monk who defeated the dragon. The official amulets of Okadera are actually called dragon balls (or wish balls) after the magic balls at the end of Asian dragons' tails. Besides the great foundational story, Okadera's grounds are home to several gorgeous and historic buildings, the oldest ceramic great Buddha statue in Japan, and many paths through its gardens that are wonderful for a relaxing stroll. The temple is especially beautiful in the spring and the fall when Japan's famous cherry blossoms, and fiery autumn leaves add even more splendor to the setting.

Beautiful temple in Asuka. Beautiful hydrangeas (seasonal). I recommend paying attention to the bus routes and not letting Google drop you off too early. The temple is at the top of the hill, but the "faster" route has a surprisingly steep walk.

It’s a beautiful temple to visit . The bus from the station ( I used No16 ) so off the beautiful green fields of rice the colour is spectacular. Coming by bus near to the ( 5-10 mins away) temple you will have a walk which has steep inclines which could be a problem to less able . One of the Buddha shrines is in a low cave .

Amakashi-no-Oka Observatory is located in the Asuka area of Nara Prefecture and offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The observatory sits atop a low hill, providing visitors with 360-degree vistas of mountains, ancient ruins, and the picturesque village of Asuka. (Translated by Google) I stopped off at Amakashi Hill on my trip to Nara. Located in the center of Asuka, Amakashi Hill is a small hill at an elevation of 150 meters, offering a spectacular view of the Yamato Sanzan (Mount Miminashi, Mount Unebi, and Mount Amanogagu). This was my second visit, and I returned to see the sunset, which I missed the last time. This time, I stayed at a nearby guesthouse (Asuka Minshuku Kitamura) and visited before dinner, enjoying the magnificent sunset while immersing myself in the eternal romance of the Asuka period. I also got to see Asukadera Temple, the Kamegata Stoneworks, Sakafuneishi Stone, Ishibutai Tomb, and the Inabuchi Rice Terraces, and was able to watch the sunset, making it a great start to the first day of my trip. The Site of Asuka Itabuki-no-miya Palace holds great historical significance as it marks the emergence of a centralized Yamato state during the Asuka Period. This period saw the adoption of Chinese administrative models and Buddhism as a state religion, along with increased interaction with continental Asia. The palace was strategically located on higher ground near the Asukagawa river and served as the setting for the Taika Reforms.

Around the 7th century, this was where the emperor and aristocrats lived, and it was the political and cultural center of the time. Although no buildings remain today, stones, foundation stones, and ancient remains are scattered around, and it's fascinating to imagine the atmosphere of the time while walking around. You can also enjoy a leisurely stroll, taking in the surrounding countryside and the group of ancient tombs. In spring, you can see the beautiful flowers of Chinese milk vetch planted in the surrounding rice fields. Historically, Fujiwara-kyo was built after this time. On the day I visited, workers in yellow helmets were engaged in some kind of excavation work. The day I visited was a beautiful, clear, sunny day, and I imagined the lives of people living in this land of Asuka so long ago. There must have been hardships and suffering that we living today cannot possibly imagine. When I think about the history of an era without any convenient tools, where people ingenuity and endurance were passed down, and the culture and technology that was passed down to the present day, I feel that our ancestors were truly great. These include Asuka Okamoto Palace, Asuka Itabuki Palace, and Later Asuka Okamoto Palace. The Taika Reforms took place during the Itabuki Palace period, and a historic coup d'état took place within the palace. It really does feel romantic. It's now a peaceful grassland, but during the Asuka period, this was undoubtedly the heart of Japan, and it was a rural area where it's strange to think that a political upheaval of such magnitude that it changed the direction of Japan took place. Excavations are still ongoing, and remains of large buildings have been found. Cafe
Cafe Kotodama is a charming, old-fashioned cafe in Nara that offers light meals and sweet treats such as parfait and pancakes. The food is professionally made by hand using fresh ingredients sourced locally. The staff are known for their friendliness, and the coffee served here is delicious. Lunchtime tends to be very popular, so it's recommended to book a table in advance. Additionally, the cafe features a gift shop with handmade items from the owners, chefs, and local artists.
I stumbled upon this place on my way to Oka Temple. I arrived around 3 PM, a week before Christmas, and I was the only customer at first. I ordered the Autumn special pancake and parfait. They were so delicious that I couldn’t help but laugh out loud. The sweetness was perfection. This place feels like it time-slipped back to the Meiji era—in the best way possible. I left with more souvenirs and half a dozen donuts. Did I mention I don’t even love sweets?

We arrived at Cafe Kotodama 20 minutes before the starting time for the afternoon tea session. The staff were very friendly and politely asked us to leave our name and number of guests and lad us to the waiting area. Staff also came to introduce “Today’s special” when we were waiting. As soon as the afternoon tea session starts, the staff lead us to store our shoes and offer comfortable slippers as an option to wear. I love the atmosphere and the decoration made the room feel extremely inviting. The desserts we ordered were amazingly delicious and beautifully crafted. Highly recommended.

small cozy place.. warm service! special mention to the hainanese chicken rice. being a singaporean where this dish originated… taste is rather authentic with a japanese twist: nara rice was used, chili sauce was sweet and not as spicy like the original but still yummy. A solid dish that we wolfed down. We also ordered french toast which was soooo good as well - fluffy and soaked with egg. Do stop by if u are in the area! definitely worth trying!

(Translated by Google) I stopped by on my way back from visiting Asukadera Temple and Ishibutai Kofun. I was curious about the ancient rice curry rice, so I ordered it. The ancient rice is a mix of red and black rice, and its crunchy texture, completely different from white rice, was striking. The more I chewed, the more the simple, deep flavor spread in my mouth. The curry roux had a gentle, nostalgic taste, like something you'd eat at your grandmother's house. It wasn't overly spiced, but rather the sweetness of slowly simmered vegetables. The sweetness of the onions in particular stood out, and matched perfectly with the natural aroma of the ancient rice. This combination is a special dish you won't find anywhere else, and I think it's unique to Asuka Village. The souvenir corner was also well-stocked, with a wide selection of Asuka-style products, including rice crackers and tea made with ancient rice, and Ishibutai Kofun-themed key chains. Fresh vegetables, handmade miso, and pickles grown by local farmers were also on sale, giving it the feeling of being a community-based establishment popular with both tourists and locals. Opening hours are from 9:00 to 17:00 (restaurant from 11:00 to 15:00), and the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays. The parking lot is large and easy to use, making it the perfect place to take a break during your sightseeing in Asuka. It's easily accessible, about a 10-minute rental bicycle ride from Asuka Station. If you're touring Asuka Village, be sure to stop by. This is a rare spot where you can experience ancient history while enjoying the unique flavors of this area. The konjac sticks were 170 yen, which you could also try; they were light and refreshing. The traditional rice meal was 1500 yen, which was very delicious and had a wide variety of dishes. The dishes that day included fried chicken, a small oden-style dish (the carrots were stewed to perfection, sweet, and tender), eggplant (prepared in a unique way, it was delicious; I believe even those afraid of eggplant will find the courage to try it), a light and refreshing soup, and absolutely amazing tofu (I've never had it in Taiwan before; it's smooth and creamy, with a rich, lingering sweetness. With a pinch of wasabi and soy sauce, it's so delicious I'm tempted to find out how to recreate that feeling in Taiwan). This year, I’m excited to revisit Asukano, a charming spot nestled near the famous Ishibutai Kofun in Asuka Village. Known for its delightful strawberry parfaits from Kitamura-san, this place is a must-visit for anyone exploring the area. Many travelers may recognize Ishibutai Kofun from school trips or leisurely excursions. At Asukano, you can also enjoy takeout at their cozy log house right outside the shop.
Nice escape from the heat in mid summer. Nice coffee and desserts. My was made by blueberries made on the restaurateur's farm.

Ancient rice is a type of rice that is close to the rice that was eaten at that time among the varieties that exist today. It was reddish, clean and delicious. It had a chewy texture that felt like it was handmade and was very delicious. At 250 yen each, it's a reasonable price. (Translated by Google) This is a shop that you almost always stop by when you go to Asuka Village. There is not much space in the parking lot, so we recommend renting a bicycle if possible. The restaurant is run by a cheerful and unique owner and a kind and carefree proprietress, and serves everything from simple snacks like yakisoba and rice balls made from ancient rice to fast food such as fried chicken and potatoes. Although it doesn't look much like Asuka, the fruit juice soft serve made with locally produced Asuka rubies is actually extremely delicious! Be sure to try the soft serve ice cream here♪ (Original)

(Translated by Google) Lunch after visiting Ishibutai Kofun. There is a souvenir shop on the first floor, and a restaurant on the second floor. I was thinking about ancient rice curry, but since I always have stomach upset when I travel, I avoid stimulants, and Miwa Somen was available, so I went for it. Is it too boiled? I thought it was a shame because if you were careful about the boiling time of the somen noodles, you could have made them more chewy. Something about the green peppers in the small bowl was unusually delicious and I would like to know the recipe. Mainly sesame oil...what is it? I don't like white sesame tofu or sesame tofu, but it had no taste and was very smooth. I doubted that it was sesame, but I saw something similar in the souvenir corner, so it must have been that. The vinegared food was too sour. I ended up stopping by Miwa that day, so I thought I should have eaten somen there. My friend's ancient rice curry was very delicious. Had the Asuka nabe. Reservations had to be made beforehand. I was lucky my accommodation owners managed to arrange it for me an hour before lunch. Fresh ingredients from Asuka cooked in rich broth makes the meal really satisfying. It filled my stomach and my heart.

We ordered the local specialty Akusa Nabe hot pot but the flavor was blend and not worth $35 person. Lots of locals visit and the ladies that run it are busy but friendly

(Translated by Google) The noodle in the persimmon leaf set (a set of noodle soup with lots of ingredients and persimmon leaf sushi) is packed with ingredients such as shrimp tempura, thick and sweet fried tofu, pumpkin, zucchini, eggplant, and very flavorful sesame tofu. The noodles are thin and don't get too soft. The broth is based on bonito and is quite salty, but also has a sweet taste that makes it delicious. The mackerel persimmon sushi is small and easy to eat. The healthy daily lunch set is packed with ingredients such as boiled sardines, boiled vegetables, rolled omelette, shumai, a small bowl of miso soup, and more. Everything is carefully prepared and delicious.

Everything on the menu here is delicious, and it's also cheaper than in the city, making it a great value restaurant. This time, I ordered the Natural Mugwort Noodle Set for 1,600 yen! It was a great choice, as it came with persimmon leaf sushi, a simmered dish, and even warabi mochi for dessert. The beer after all that walking was also great! On my way home, I bought some of the Natural Mugwort Noodle I had today as a souvenir. The asuka nabe (Hot pot) set was 3850 yens per person during lunch. The hot pot alone without the side dishes, 2950 yens per person. The set was alot of food. Did not want to disrespect so gave it our best shot to finish the food. Ate so much, had to skip dinner. The broth had a light umanmi flavor at the beginning but intensified as the broth reduced over the course of the meal. What were in the hot pot... chicken thigh, assorted veggies, and tofu. For Japanese standard, the meal was quite expensive for lunch but we did not mind as it was our first time experiencing this type of hot pot.
