It looks a lots like a dolmen and for the first imperial grave this makes sense . Really impressive to see and to experience being at the hartland of imperial Japan. There are many tombes ofnthe first emperors here striking how these tumules have strong resemblance to the tumuli of the chinese emperors as well as the roman and etruscan tumuli
2022/07/17 (14:00) SUNDAY Historical and nice place to visit . It was not so crowded But still there were people . There is only stone to watch but you can enjoy the view and ride rental bicycle 🚴and enjoy the scenic view. Admission fee 🎟 is for ¥300 adults and ¥200 for Childrens but make sure there is nothing but only the giant stones only . Toilets 🚽 are available . Vending machines and food courts are also available. Car 🚗 parking is for ¥500 per day and bus 🚌 parking for ¥3000 per day . Wheelchair ♿️ person may get little trouble to travel this place but they can enjoy it from far but there are stairs so I think it would be tough for them be careful . staff were helpful and nice . Only cash 💰so be careful to carry cash . Worth visiting .
A nice place to showcase the historial Japanese era of "Ancient tombs". There are sheets to explain the history and significance of the site. There is not much things to see except the Tumulus itself though. There are more stone artifacts with very long history in surrounding locations.
27th May 2025 NAIST International Field trip, we were taken to Ishibutai Tumulus. The Tomb of Soga no Unako, or what remains of it. It was told that it was made with clay and soil that shaped the tomb along with the rocks. Unfortunately, someone of unknown origin destroyed and ruined the tomb, and what you see is what is left of it. The area is quite small, apart from the giant rocks, there's not a lot to see, so keep your expectations in check haha (^-^;
Cycled here after visiting Tachibana-dera. Beautiful scenery along the way and the ancient stone tomb is really amazing to see in person.
Been wanting to visit this tumulus for sometime. It was a nice place to relax while enjoying the view of this tumulus since the park is big. However am curious why there aren't any other tumulus found in the vast area except another one app 350m away. Probably destroyed over time and only these remains...
Ishibutai Tumulus (石舞台古墳, Asuka, Nara) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I visited Ishibutai Tumulus with Hiro’s parents, who are from Osaka, and it was especially meaningful because this was a place Hiro’s father really wanted me to see. Walking into the ancient stone chamber, you can understand why. The scale of the megaliths is incredible — some weighing over 70 tons — and standing inside gives you a direct connection to Japan’s early history. Believed to be the tomb of Soga no Umako, a statesman who helped bring Buddhism to Japan in the 7th century, this kofun is both a historical site and a cultural touchstone. The surrounding park is peaceful, and in spring, cherry blossoms frame the stones in a way that feels almost timeless. Practical notes: the entry fee is modest (about ¥300), parking is free, and English information sheets are provided. It’s easy to reach on foot or by bike from the rest of Asuka’s historic area, making it a great part of a half-day or full-day visit. For me, the visit was not just about the history, but about sharing it with family. That personal connection made the site unforgettable. History: 5/5 Atmosphere: 5/5 Accessibility: 5/5
Amazing tomb that you can see and walk into as well.

The oldest Buddhist temple in Japan, and the oldest statue at 1400 years old. A bit out of the way, but we'll worth a visit.
A peaceful and historical temple with Japan’s oldest Buddha statue. The calm atmosphere makes it a nice place to visit and reflect.
The main attraction is their Buddha statue in the main hall. I was by myself and I could enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Stunning views of the mountains and rice fields. It's worth the stop if you are going to visit Okadera temple, just up the road. Very nice and peaceful temple.
A must-visit in Japan🇯🇵 if you fancy Han Buddhist History @ East Asia🌞 Asuka-dera (Hōkō-ji) was built as the family temple of the Soga clan between the end of the 6th century and the beginning of the 7th century, and was the first Buddhist temple in Japan to have a fully-fledged temple complex. Two Great Monks 惠慈(Goguryeo) and 慧聪(Baekje) came Japan to preach Han Buddhism and stayed @ Asuka-dera, highly recommend to visit here and pay respect to Han Buddhism Route📖
Modest but impressive Buddhist temple homing the oldest statue of Buddha in Japan. Complemented by garden and a small museum. Possibility to ring the bell of the temple (with respect.)
Great anciant Buddhist temple in Japan! Gilt bronze statue of Great Buddha, called Asuka Daibutsu is impressive.
Very far off the beaten path (40 minute walk from the nearest train station) but worth the trip. This is the site of the first Buddhist temple in Japan, and home to the oldest Buddha statue in Japan. Unlike most temples, you can take pictures of everything. It's a very simple temple, but the history surrounding it makes the whole place feel almost otherworldly. Buddhism shaped the culture and history of Japan, and that all started right here. If you're spending time in Nara, and you care about Japanese Buddhist history, this is a must visit.
This temple has the oldest Buddha statue in Japan. One side of the Buddha looks strict and the other side looks gentle.

One of my most favorite scenes at Asuka is always looking back from the top of Takamatsuzuka Tumulus. Noted on my wonder-tips site.
Very interesting. It's a bit hard to reach because it's a long walk from the parking lot. But there's an unofficial parking lot close by that the local farmer charges 100 yen for. The mural museum should not be missed.
The museum is ok but mainly replicas. Nice area outside to walk and see the kofun remains.
(Translated by Google) This is an incredibly well-maintained tumulus. It is said to be a two-tiered circular tumulus with a diameter of 23m, but the first tier is not flat. I'm not sure if it was built to fit the terrain, but it seems unusual. And the best thing about this place is the murals, which are described in detail on the information board on site. I think the murals were painted after the stone chamber was completed, and they are a truly intricate and meticulous work.
(Translated by Google) Takamatsuzuka Tomb is located within the National Asuka Historical Park. It's definitely worth seeing at least once. Takamatsuzuka Tomb is also famous for the murals on the stone chamber (a group of women). It seems like something you'd see in a history textbook... I was glad to see it, as it's designated as a national treasure. Admission is 300 yen for adults. (Translated by Google) Takamatsuzuka Tomb, an Asuka period burial mound in Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture, became famous overnight for its brilliantly colored murals discovered in 1972. The group of women known as "Asuka Beauties" is so striking that it even appears in textbooks. While the murals themselves are currently closed to the public for preservation purposes, you can see intricate replicas up close at the nearby Takamatsuzuka Mural Museum. On my first visit, I was astonished by the color sense and technical prowess of the time, and felt like I was experiencing ancient aesthetics. The tomb is about a 15-minute walk from Kintetsu Asuka Station. Bicycle rentals from the station make it easy to explore the surrounding historic sites. While there is free parking in front of the Takamatsuzuka Mural Museum, it can get crowded on weekends and during peak tourist seasons, so arriving early is recommended. Since there are few signposts along the way, it's a good idea to check your route in advance using a map app. The Takamatsuzuka Mural Museum, while compact, is well worth a visit, showcasing replicas of the murals and a video introducing the excavation process. The museum's calming atmosphere allows for leisurely viewing. While relatively quiet on weekdays, it can get crowded with families and groups on weekends. If you want to avoid the crowds, it's best to visit in the morning. The highlight of the museum is undoubtedly the elaborate replica of the mural. Seeing the original colors and depictions of the figures up close will leave you impressed by the high level of craftsmanship from 1,300 years ago. The area around the tomb is a well-maintained park, perfect for a stroll. Cherry blossoms bloom in spring, allowing you to experience the changing seasons. Popular souvenirs include postcards and clear folders featuring the murals. They're sure to make a delightful gift for history-loving friends. Takamatsuzuka Tomb is a rare opportunity to experience ancient beauty and technology. Recommended for history buffs, art, and culture alike. When you visit, be sure to explore the surrounding historic sites and fully immerse yourself in the history of Asuka.

Okadera may be the inspiration for the Dragon Ball anime. The legend of the temple's founding tells the story of a dragon marauding the people in the village that is present day Asuka, and of the Buddhist monk who defeated the dragon. The official amulets of Okadera are actually called dragon balls (or wish balls) after the magic balls at the end of Asian dragons' tails. Besides the great foundational story, Okadera's grounds are home to several gorgeous and historic buildings, the oldest ceramic great Buddha statue in Japan, and many paths through its gardens that are wonderful for a relaxing stroll. The temple is especially beautiful in the spring and the fall when Japan's famous cherry blossoms, and fiery autumn leaves add even more splendor to the setting.
One of the temples on the Saikoku 33 pilgrimage. Lots of history and peaceful surroundings.
Beautiful temple in Asuka. Beautiful hydrangeas (seasonal). I recommend paying attention to the bus routes and not letting Google drop you off too early. The temple is at the top of the hill, but the "faster" route has a surprisingly steep walk.
Wonderful temple One of the best I have seen in my life so far Very happy I when there 300¥
It’s a beautiful temple to visit . The bus from the station ( I used No16 ) so off the beautiful green fields of rice the colour is spectacular. Coming by bus near to the ( 5-10 mins away) temple you will have a walk which has steep inclines which could be a problem to less able . One of the Buddha shrines is in a low cave .
Very interesting temple. It’s so beautiful. The view is very refreshing.
Is a very interesting temple with a lot of flowers and a amazing history. They're also a lot of things to do nearby but be warned a lot of the restaurants are closed often

Colossal stone 🪨 with surprising shape
As a non-Japanese speaker, this was quite hard to find. I went there for the lore only, but there was a sign pointing the wrong way, so I turned left and walked a long way to the stone. If the sign had clearly pointed forward I would have been there in 30 seconds, but now it took me 15 minutes. The weather was also not very good, so by the time I saw the stone, I was cold to the bone and a big annoyed, even though the surroundings are very pretty. If you like Japanese history and also want to see the many kofun in Asuka, this would be nice to visit, but if you want to come here for Kameishi specifically, like me, don't bother. It looks exactly like the picture here and feels like any other stone.
This, my friends, is a turtle rock. It is the turtleiest and rockiest turtle rock that ever did cap the lands. There is some ancient folklore chiseled into a plaque -- but for the most part, it is just talking about how a sculptor turned a rock into a turtle. I'd recommend making a quick pit-stop at the market beside the 亀石 either before your visit so that you can refresh and prepare your mind and body for the sheer brilliance that is the turtle rock.
Kameishi stonework was the hardest to find for us. Noted on my wonder-tips site.
Man made stone. Nice shape
(Translated by Google) From this photo (September 2015) taken from a different angle than anyone else, you can probably see how much we wanted to see this turtle stone, and how much we adored this ruin! Ever since I learned about it in my elementary school textbooks, I've always wanted to meet this turtle, which is also my name, and this summer was the moment when I finally got to see it! I respect the meaning behind this, but if it is man-made, I wonder why it was carved like this!!

Offers a nice view over the more famous spots in Asuka, while the more distant mountains between Nara and Osaka are also in clear view. Suitable for rests while you go hiking.
A perfect view from Asuka. The cherry blossoms on the top of the mountain are perfectly located. Standing under them looking at Nara prefecture is unique and simply remarkable.
Nice place to rest. It'll give you a nice view of Asuka.
Very nice to get a panoramic view of Asuka
(Translated by Google) I stopped off at Amakashi Hill on my trip to Nara. Located in the center of Asuka, Amakashi Hill is a small hill at an elevation of 150 meters, offering a spectacular view of the Yamato Sanzan (Mount Miminashi, Mount Unebi, and Mount Amanogagu). This was my second visit, and I returned to see the sunset, which I missed the last time. This time, I stayed at a nearby guesthouse (Asuka Minshuku Kitamura) and visited before dinner, enjoying the magnificent sunset while immersing myself in the eternal romance of the Asuka period. I also got to see Asukadera Temple, the Kamegata Stoneworks, Sakafuneishi Stone, Ishibutai Tomb, and the Inabuchi Rice Terraces, and was able to watch the sunset, making it a great start to the first day of my trip. Asuka in itself is beautiful but this temple was really serene. Had the chance to go on a day that isn’t crowded at all, although we had a couple of other elderly Japanese tourists with us who were really fascinated by the place too. It’s 400 yen per adult. They can give you an English map and guide too. Rest station and Washroom are all nicely kept and clean. The area is really beautiful, I have no other words.
Beautiful temple with a calm atmosphere. I cycled here and the scenery along the way was amazing!
Piękna i spokojna świątynia ze ślicznymi sakurami. Wejście kosztuje 350 jenow. Very beautiful and quiet temple. Sakura trees look amazing when in full bloom. It costs 350 yen to enter. This place is connected with history of Shotoku Prince from VII century.

(Translated by Google) My favorite spot in Asuka Village. There's ample bicycle parking space next to the main road. It was red spider lily season, and the area surrounding Tachibana-dera Temple was awash with wild red spider lilies, attracting many locals and tourists alike to admire them. The entrance fee was affordable, I think 500 yen, and well worth it. It's the birthplace of Prince Shotoku. The moment I stepped inside, I felt instantly relaxed. The cool breeze, accompanied by the subtle scent of tsubaki, made the trip worthwhile. Even if it weren't for the flowers, I'd still say it's worth a visit. Besides the main hall, Tachibana-dera Temple also boasts the Yojo-in Temple (famous for its ceiling painted with various flowers. Many people relax on mats admiring the flowers or simply relaxing in the breeze. It's said that Prince Shotoku was born there), the Ryomen-ishi Stone (one side appears to represent good and the other evil), the Sanko-ishi Stone (I was careless and didn't see it, haha), and many other carefully cared-for flowers. While Tachibana-dera Temple isn't large, there are so many details to savor. I really loved it. Admission is 400 yen. This is the birthplace of Prince Shotoku. I wondered if he was born in a temple, but it turns out that at the time it was a secondary palace of Emperor Kinmei. Prince Shotoku was the son of the fourth prince, Tachibana no Toyohi no Mikoto, and Princess Anahobe no Hashihito no Himemiko. I learned for the first time that he was a member of the imperial family. Inside the temple is a stone structure from the Asuka period called Nimenseki, which is said to represent the good and evil in people's hearts. I love its unique expression from that era. Learning about the history of the Takamatsuzaka Mural was personally one of my favorite moments in Japan. There were full recreations of the tomb itself as well as detailed replicas of items that are considered national treasures. Small unknown fact: Suzaku was the inspiration for the Pokémon Ho-Oh
A very small museum housing a range of wall paintings. One line of information in English in the entire museum, so it really helps (that is, it is essential) for you to be able to read Japanese to get much at all from a visit. Helpfully they have an explanatory brochure in English. The brochure proved far more enlightening than the museum. In no way worth the admission charge.
It was understandable how difficult it is to maintain the tumulus after visiting here. Noted on my wonder-tips site.

The Mural Museum offers an overview of the interior and murals of Takamatsuzuka Tomb, so I recommend visiting it before seeing the actual site (which is just a small hill). On the day I visited, a VR on-site guided tour was being held, so I joined (with my group alone). A specialist guide carefully explained the site using videos and images on a tablet as we walked, and was happy to answer even basic questions. Although we ended up going much longer than planned (thank you!), it helped me deepen my understanding of the origins and significance of Takamatsuzuka Tomb and piqued my interest in ancient history. I'm very grateful for this invaluable experience. On the way to the Mural Museum, there is a rest area with restrooms and drink vending machines. Very interesting and free museum on one of the ancient burial mounds found in the region of Asakusa. Especially the history and process of restoring the ancient drawings from ~700AD is extremely informative and unique. The museum offers english (and other language) guidance through their website offered through QR codes, making it very accessible. They also gave fun merch in their little souvenir shop.
Really detailed exhibit that showcases the process and the timeline of how the tomb was discovered, dug out to preserve, and put back to rest again after all the information has been retrieved. The guides that are working there are really friendly as well, and tried their best to teach it in English, even though they are not familiar with it.
Nice museum with interesting architecture. The nearby tumulus is also preserved in a pleasing way. Employees at the various facilities very friendly and helpful.
It is the place that Japan's ancient culture was influenced by Korea. Its celestial map has the view of Goguryeo(ancient Korea kingdom)'s capital, Pyeongyang.
(Translated by Google) I had the opportunity to participate in the mural unveiling. Asuka Village has many free parking lots, and this one was also free. I parked my car and entered through the basement. The Experience Hall is also free, and is larger than the Takamatsuzuka Mural Museum (which charges a fee), with a colorful layout and chronological commentary that makes it easy to follow and wonderful. Photography is also allowed inside the hall. At the exit, there are three theater commentary sessions (each starting at a scheduled time), and it's definitely worth spending an hour to see them all. Afterwards, I viewed the special exhibition and bought a souvenir from the basement shop. You can also purchase a dry-cut board experience ticket in advance at the shop. If you would like to try it, I recommend purchasing one in advance. Going twice will result in a waste of time and energy. (You can see it on the day if there are openings.) This time, it was Genbu (Turtle and Snake), one of the Four Gods. Crossing is prohibited on the road in front of the parking lot, so I went down the stairs from the parking lot, checked in at the Four Gods Hall, and waited while looking at the permanent exhibits. When the time came, I went up to the first floor and a staff member handed out opera glasses. I focused with the unfamiliar opera glasses... and wow! The pattern on the turtle shell was so clear! I highly recommend seeing it in person while it's open. *Photography and video recording are prohibited. (Translated by Google) I found out about the 37th Kitora Tomb Mural Exhibition: Black Tortoise on the North Wall on social media and applied. Luckily, I was able to get the Saturday morning slot I wanted, so I went. Since I knew almost nothing about this tomb, I first watched three introductory videos in the mini-theater right next to the reception desk. Each was about 10 minutes long, with a 10-minute break between each video before the next. It was likely produced with the cooperation of NHK, so it was very clear and easy to understand (as an ancient history buff, I understood it well). I recommend it for first-time visitors. I think it's much better than just viewing the exhibits right away. I followed the exhibits in order, which was also easy to understand. There was a miniature stone chamber, and you could enter and experience what the murals actually looked like. I was particularly amazed that such an intricate astronomical chart existed in that era. The mural viewing I applied for was short, but the number of participants was limited, so I was able to take my time to look at them. This was the first time I'd seen the murals of the zodiac gods. And it's free? I figured setting an admission fee of 500-1000 yen wouldn't be too much of a hassle, so I headed home gratefully. As it's an ancient tomb, it was quite a distance from the station, so it required some courage to walk there. Mysterious! (Jul. 2023)

The mystery not solved yet
Very beautiful area with a very mysterious rock. Who built it? Who put it there? What was the reason for creating it? Maybe it was meant as a water pump or something. No one is ever to really know. But it's definitely lovely to be out in the quiet and peaceful rural area.
(Translated by Google) This is an archaeological site near the Asuka Palace ruins. The existence of the Sakafuneishi Ruins has been known for some time, but the turtle-shaped stone structure below was excavated in 2000, and the site was collectively designated the Sakafuneishi Ruins. The man at the toll booth near the turtle-shaped stone structure gave me a detailed explanation, and I learned that even if most people only see the Sakafuneishi, the stone wall inside the covered hut along the way is actually an incredible historical site. He explained to me in detail that this stone wall extends around the entire hill where the ruins are located, and the stones themselves are made of sandstone, which is not found in the vicinity. I learned about the Sakafuneishi Ruins on Yomiuri TV's popular program, "Wakaichi Investigation Team," and came to see it. Thanks to Wakaichi's detailed explanation, I found the tour very interesting, and I really enjoyed the widening scope of the romance of Asuka period ruins. The program taught me that the entire hill where the Sakafuneishi is located was artificially constructed, so I enjoyed climbing, checking to see if it was man-made as I went. Due to the location, I can't see it in real life, but I would like to continue watching the fascinating research team on YouTube and come back again. It is thought to date from the latter half of the 7th century, but despite the passage of time, there has been little damage from weathering, and the outline is clear. I wonder if it remains because it was excavated from a nearby rice field during the Edo period. It has a unique look, and you can imagine that it is influenced by the continent. It probably dates back to the time when there was a lot of exchange with the Korean Peninsula. It is a pity that it can only be seen through a fence because it is placed inside the Imperial Household Agency Mata's mausoleum. Tremendously interesting information, for free(90% of the exhibition). We visited there as a family, and all of us(elementary, high school and university students, and two adults) enjoyed ourselves there. I still can't believe they charge nothing for the awesome exhibition.
The museum itself has a lot of historical stories and movies on top of figures that transport you into 7th century Japan. Although the tour has several AR zones that you can scan and view while enjoying each spot, the AR is pretty barebones, and the English translations do help, though. When you're down in the figure and movie section, it is only in Japanese so your mileage may vary depending on your Japanese level but I do hope you can enjoy as much as I did with my limited Japanese level.
There are two parts. The special exhibition and the permanent one. The special is free for foreigners who bring their passports. The permanent is in the basement and is always free. The exhibition downstairs was good and informative.
