Gardens
Nestled in the heart of Norfolk, Virginia, the Norfolk Botanical Garden spans an impressive 155 acres and is a true paradise for nature enthusiasts. This vibrant garden showcases over forty themed areas, each offering its own unique charm. In April, visitors are treated to stunning displays of azaleas that steal the spotlight alongside an extensive collection of 450 rose varieties. Among its many attractions, you'll find a serene Japanese Garden designed in traditional style with hills and ponds that invite tranquility.
Fantastic place. One could easily spend an entire day here. There are miles of walking trails, and every 50 feet or so you feel like you're in a whole new world because there is always a brand new, beautifully planned landscape before you. Nothing is fenced off or off limits, which I really appreciated, as even on a crowded day one could find a bit of peace and privacy. Kids really seem to love it as well, and we were privy to an exceptionally hilarious scene here, when this little toy John Deere golf cart rounded the corner, being driven by a literal baby, with another baby in the passenger seat! Also pretty neat having the airport next door. One could take the whole family here and have a fantastic day out, for all ages. The only thing I thought it lacked was a little cafe, although it does look like they have a couple of food trucks open from time to time. Oh, and I seriously appreciated the young lady at the gate, for mentioning the discount programs, one of which we were actually qualified to receive. All in all it was a great day out, and even though we spent a good 3-4 hours there, I could have stayed double that and not have been bored. Would love to return!

Truly one of the best BG's in the country, I make every effort to visit in every one of my biannual trips to VA. From the diversity of habitats to the heart-filling colorful butterfly garden with a vast diversity of butterflies and other pollinators to the peaceful Japanese tea garden to the amazing exhibits and holiday light displays, it is top notch. Add to this the opp to be there this year during fall migration and was delighted to find many visiting songbirds including Palm Warblers and a Clay-colored Sparrow. And all of this is BEFORE the expansion that opens next Spring. My heartfelt thanks to those who have made this BG a reality. It is truly one of my happiest places and I tell every BG I visit all about it.

Had the best time looking at the lights. All the different themes were beautiful with the sound effects and music. It wasn't crowded, so we could just take our time. They did have food trucks set up but I didnt get anything. Will definitely go back :)

We had a 6 hour connection at the airport in Norfolk, VA and a really kind gentleman at the information desk recommmened this beautiful botanical garden which was just across the road from the Airport. We literally walked from the airport to garden. It was so beautiful with a rose garden voted #1 in the U.S., a Japanese bonsai garden, a butterfly sanctuary and a kids Adventure Garden. The best part is that there is a free guided trolley tour that takes you around the property every hour on the hour, and gives all the details of the garden. The staff is warm and friendly and are fully dedicated to taking care of the plants. If you love plants it's a MUST do!

Spent a lovely morning there with my mother. We got coffee at the food truck behind the visitor center and did a tram tour. The team tour was a great way to see a majority of the garden, plus get the history of the garden and some plants. We didn't have a ton of time to spend so we checked out the Japanese Garden and Sub tropical gardens afterward.

Phenomenal place to visit and explore whether you’re a resident of Virginia or just passing through. Would definitely recommend checking it out!! Bear in mind it’s of course much more vibrant and colorful in the spring/summertime. Not to mention they’re dog friendly on Sunday’s!
Cameron M — Google review
Beautiful garden. Easy to walk around. The tram is a nice addition to take a tour, or hop on/off while walking around. The rose garden is large. Butterfly area was a bit of a letdown. Would also have liked a better food option than just the coffee truck.

Beautiful Botanical Garden. We spent 5 hours in hot summer day and not even saw all parts of garden. Butterfly garden was interesting. Dogs allowed sundays, but not sure if you can go everywhere. Sure to come next time to revisit such a magnificent place

Museums
The Chrysler Museum of Art, located in the artistic district of Ghent in Norfolk, Virginia, is a renowned museum with an extensive collection spanning ancient to contemporary art. Established in 1933 and significantly expanded by a generous donation from Walter Chrysler, the museum now houses over 30,000 objects representing thousands of years of world history.
Absolutely enjoyed my time here. Beautiful artwork, beautiful exhibits. Took hours to walk through the entire thing and still felt there was more to see. Lots of places to sit and admire the art. Staff is kind and knowledgeable about the pieces in the collections. Traveling exhibits are informative and beautifully displayed. Great for the entire family, young and older. Easy to walk through. Feels like you’re traveling through time and immersing yourself in different cultures and places. Will definitely go again.

Incredible experience. Completely free to visit and view ORIGINAL HISTORICAL ART. I cried many, many times. It was such a special, emotional experience. This was my first time having the opportunity to visit an art museum, and I was absolutely amazed. The staff was very kind, they open the door for you upon arrival and exit. They ask for your zip code at check-in, and give you a visitors guide. The staff are very helpful in answering questions as well. They have a beautiful piano played by some of the most memorable names in classical music, and we asked if someone could play it. They informed us that they have professional pianists come to play it to keep it in good condition. We are looking forward to coming back at a time when we can hear it.

I've loved this museum since I was a kid living in Norfolk and now enjoy sharing it with my granddaughters. The new Perry Glass studio is the crown jewel of this magnificent museum! Plan your visit around attending one of the glass blowing demos that happen daily at noon. Before Covid, they used to hold wonderful jazz music events after hours in the main building. Many of the events and activities are finally coming back. Be sure to check the events and activities page for their many offerings. Zinnia Cafe has amazing food! Expect a bit of a wait if you visit at lunch time. It's a popular spot for locals and visitors. Surprisingly, this museum is kid friendly even with an emphasis on glass. There's a large, interactive children's exhibit near the entrance that my granddaughters adore. There's also a summer camp program. One of the best parts of visiting the Chrysler is that parking and entry is free!

This was a favorite part of our family trip to Virginia! The museum is free to enter and is a never-ending fun experience. There is so much to see! One of my favorite collections was of all the Tiffany Glass.

Love this museum. We were there for the native museum glass exhibit. Truly wonderful. Another reason I wanted to go was for their Nancy Camden Witt paintings which I have wanted to see in person for years. They were the last thing we found along side a Man Ray sculpture and Dali portrait. This review courtesy of artist David F. Heatwole.

Extremely pleasurable and beautiful location. It is shared with the glass museum next door and a rock garden that spans both. The art maintained within the museum is also priceless and worth a visit. Will definitely come back in the future for newer installations.

Loved this! First of all, it's free! So what's not to love? Great glass collection and other permanent items from around the world. Really really enjoyed the temporary exhibit on Native American glass art. Definitely something I knew nothing about. Nice gift shop. Restaurant food was good but you have to put your name on a list when it gets busy. If I had known, I would have put my name in earlier then hopped off to see something else.

Beautiful museum with a great mix of art from centuries ago to now. A friendly knowledgeable staff that is happy to answer questions. Kid friendly. Clean restrooms and plenty of parking.

Nauticus is a waterfront maritime museum in Norfolk that recently underwent a significant investment. The interactive science museum features exhibits that engage visitors in designing resilient cities, understanding coastal stewardship, and exploring naval history. There's also a whimsical under-the-sea space for children and an aquarium showcasing native species. Norfolk's culinary scene offers diverse seafood and farm-to-table options, while the annual Norfolk Harborfest celebrates the city's maritime heritage with live music, local crafts, and delicious food.
An absolute must see for the entire family. The new interactive area is amazing with great fun for the entire family. Touring the ship gives us a glimpse into what life was like for the soldiers who manned this fabulous vessel. We have been to this museum at least two dozen times and each time we see and learn something new. The children love wondering around and exploring the ship while being able to actually see and touch things that they would otherwise never get to experience. The gift shop is adorable and offers a variety of items, that includes military memorabilia, toys, jewelry, self care and home decor. There is a great little place to get some food and cold drinks also. This is a museum that you could easily spend most of the day at because there is so much to see and do. Definitely a must see for the whole family.

The BB Wisconsin was AMAZING!!! The 90 minute tour was well worth the ticket. Seeing the captains quarters and battle sections, a battle reenactment from Desert Storm, and walking were some of the bravest men ever to have lived was inspiring and humbling. The museum inside was incredible. Interactive lessons on sailing and games for kids. Would absolutely come back again.

This was a great adventure with the family. From the Nauticus interaction museum, the battle ship Wisconsin and the victory boat tour. Unfortunately we arrived on a Sunday and had to really run through everything to be able to experience it... but even then it was fun. USS Wisconsin was a blast to explore and see the history. The victory cruise was fun but the youngest, 7, lost interest pretty quickly. The interaction exhibits in Nauticus kept the kids and adults entertained the remainder of the time. Highly recommend and of these three experiences!

It was interesting to see. Couldn't go high in the tower or go inside the actual big gun turrets. Can't go to the engine room either. Basically you can't go to where you want to go. I went there when it was 100 degrees. I could only go there when it was hot. Anyways they have a nice little naval museum in the air conditioning.
Danny D — Google review
Beautiful tour and an amazing place! We got to see battleships aircraft carriers and much more!! Dolphins all throughout the whole tour as well! It was super cool. Then there's a museum as well and you can go out and tour the Wisconsin! A very pleasant experience touring the battleship!!
Haven D — Google review
First for reference let me start with I've been to all 4 of the Iowa class battleships after visiting the Wisconsin the other day. After seeing the Wisconsin, I've been left speechless for the way this great ship is being treated and exhibited. It's not even Halloween yet, and you can barely navigate her deck for the sheer massive amount of gaudy looking christmas decorations already being set up. I'm sure she will look amazing at night when it's all turned on. But let us eat our turkey, or at least have our candy before you start shoving that holiday down our throats. 1) the people in charge of maintaining this vesssel, should be ashamed of themselves for the utter lack of respect and care that shows in numerous locations. The neglect for a piece of history is abhorant. NONE of the other ships that I have visited have shown any signs like the photos I'm including. The decks are in terrible condition, not being cleaned and showing obvious signs of standing water that has dried. There are clogged drains allowing standing water to accumulate and soak in other locations. And the paint is peeling across most of the command structure. 2) the "tour" is terrible. Lack of proper signage indicating a flow through the vessel. It's pretty much a "roam wherever you want" type experience. While that can be appreciated by some, a more organized route through the vessel would be the best way to show how the crews lived and operated such a massive warship. The New Jersey had in my opinion the most accessible, and clearly marked path of all of these great ships. 3) blocking off the command structure from the public with standard tickets is downright rude. Making people pay extra to see both the command decks and the engine room is ridiculous. I've been on the bridge of all 3 of her sister ships, and in the engine room of the New Jersey, without paying extra for this privledge. While I understand those areas are part of a "guided tour" the other vessels also have upgrades for guided tours of various aspects of the vessel for an extra charge, but you're still allowed to visit these other areas. You just don't get the extra history lesson by not doing the tour. The Wisconsin is labled as the "last battleship" but if she is not taken better care of, she will be the first completed Iowa class to be scrapped. If the people in charge have no desire to take care of this vessel, give her to another state to watch over her in her retirement. Or let her join the others who have been immortilized as reefs to protect our waters and drive tourism for recreational divers. Norfolk: to be the historical first naval shipyard "city" for the U.S., as well as the largest naval station in the world. To be charged with the honor of caring one of the great battleships that protected our freedom for her 50 years of service is an honor that is not being fulfilled. Nauticus..........You can do better, and should.
Will T — Google review
This was fantastic. I loved the educational exhibits and the museum. I learned so much about the ship and it's significance. We did the self walk through and it was fun exploring all the areas of the ship, but gave a true reverence of how it must've been to serve on the ship. I truly earned respect for those that served. They truly sacrificed for our freedom and for that I'm greatful and honored to be free and walk among their experience. Thank you Nauticus for a wonderful experience and preserving our history.

We went with kids so the review is only about the 3rd floor. It was really pro-science and hands-on stuff for the kids, so if you're into that, it's great! I personally am not, so I was not well entertained. The under the sea themed playground type room was fun for the kids too.

Zoos & Aquariums
The Virginia Zoo, located on the shores of the Lafayette River, is a sprawling park that houses over 700 animals from more than 150 species. Visitors can explore exhibits like the World of Reptiles and the Trail of the Tiger, where they can see red pandas, siamangs, and Malayan tigers. The zoo's staff are dedicated to preserving global and local biodiversity through various initiatives aimed at protecting vulnerable species.
Not all heroes wear capes. First off Shout out to the Ticket Booth Administrative Clerk that was on the morning shift yesterday the 6th of October 2025 when my family and I came in yesterday around Noontime. He made our day super special just by being 1 hell of a worker and two a kind human being. Actions can be faked, but never emotions. Thank you very much for helping us make our family day extra special 😀. The Zoo was fantastic only saw a quarter of the zoo. It's definitely a two or three day tripper. There is so much to do from collecting zoo coins, to riding the train, to getting photos. My family had fun, but we do intend on visiting again. The sun didn't help, but the zoo was super fun and enjoyable. I highly recommend this zoo as a place to visit, explore, and learn. The food was really great as well.

We love the zoo. It was a really nice day and even though it seemed busy in the parking lot it really was busy inside. I’m docking a star because the food and pricing at the restaurant in the zoo was way overpriced and not that great but the zoo itself was really good to have a lot there. It’s a nice walk around lots of benches lots of shade. It’s just an enjoyable day. Pro Tip if you have a Norfolk botanical gardens membership until the end of September, you can get in the zoo for free.

Great zoo, been to a few in different states. Love their reptile exhibit, so many snakes and a cute crocodile. Its a small zoo, nice for s0ending all day or getting it done in 3-4 hours. Bring a lunch, their food isn't worth the cost.
Joshua S — Google review
A lot of fun to check out the animals which looked well cared for. The zoo had a great layout where everything connected back into the main pavilion which was nice and made it much easier to figure out what you had next. They also have a nice area to pet cows and goats for the kids.
Stephanie M — Google review
We are members of the NC Aquarium, so we were able to get discounted tickets to the Virginia Zoo, since they are AZA-accredited. I was impressed with the different types of discounted tickets they offer. We made our check-in time for Sunday at 12:30 pm, since we had some other plans beforehand to get lunch. We also brought a reusable water bottle in, so we did not get any food or drinks at the zoo. When we got to the gate, there was one party ahead of us, so we did not wait long. We checked in using the barcode and then verified our membership. The layout of the zoo is very intuitive and simple. The paths are easy to follow, allowing you to navigate through the entire zoo in one loop. The animals we encountered were very interactive, which I loved! I really enjoyed seeing the American bison, the armadillo, and the crocodile. The reptile area is way bigger than you would think, and all of the animals were so cool to see. They have a farm area with goats that you can pet. All of the exhibits were beautiful, with lots of space for the animals. When we went, it was not too busy, which we appreciated. Overall, this was one of the better zoo experiences that we have had on the East Coast! The gift shop has a lot of cool items, and we spent about $70 in there. Parking is free and spaces are plenty. I would definitely come back!

What a wonderful experience at the Virginia Zoo! I bought my tickets online—super convenient and easy to use. Once inside, everything was well-organized, clean, and inviting. I loved walking through the beautiful garden areas filled with colorful flowers—it really added to the peaceful vibe. Watching the animals up close was such a joy. Each exhibit was thoughtfully designed and gave a great view of the animals in a natural setting. One of the highlights was riding the zoo train for just $3—such a fun way to relax and take in the scenery. A perfect place for families, friends, or solo visitors. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a lovely day outdoors with nature and wildlife!
Chida S — Google review
Had a great trip to the zoo! We were able to see everything in about two hours. They have a full reptile house, tons of different animals, and even a baby orangutan, which was such a highlight. The petting zoo was my favorite—you can actually walk into the goat area and pet them. Everything was very clean and well maintained.
Alisha — Google review
This is a very small zoo compared to others we’ve been to, and it only took us a couple hours to get through. I think the zoo could use a better play area for kids and maybe a few more exhibits. Our favorite part was the reptile house. We were sad to see that we couldn’t feed the giraffes and that there were no elephants. Overall good experience, but I don’t think we’d come back if in the area.

The Elizabeth River Trail in Norfolk, Virginia is a 10.5-mile urban pathway that runs alongside the city's main waterway. It offers a scenic route through charming neighborhoods and past iconic landmarks such as Fort Norfolk and Old Dominion University. Maintained by the Friends of the Elizabeth River Trail Foundation, this trail provides opportunities for outdoor activities like biking, hiking, and jogging.
An urban pedestrian and biking trail along the Norfolk waterfront boasting scenic views, parks, restaurants, breweries, monuments and excellent photo opportunities. The portion of the trail we enjoyed was along the waterfront at Town Point Park, Waterside Ferry Dock, Nauticus, USS Wisconsin and the Pagoda. It was a very peaceful place to walk at night with very little foot traffic or bike riders. It was clean and free of visible rubbish with many trash containers located along the route. We enjoyed watching the ferry dock. We liked the trail so much we explored the Pagoda area after breakfast the next morning. It was quiet, peaceful and scenic. Such a nice little retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city.

A nice trail surrounding the water and snakling the Ghent historic district. The only issue for first time users and visitors is that it needs better signage due to detours, so people might get lost. Otherwise perfect.

I have been walking this trail since it was created and I’m so happy that it is still being invested in by the community. There is always a new feature or event. The Weyanoke Bird & Wildflower Sanctuary is lovely and the Slover Library Story Trail with pages of picture books printed on canvas and affixed to the chain link fence each Summer are amazing.

The restaurant is known for its seasonal and locally sourced seafood, oysters, and fresh produce, as well as cocktails and beer. The interior features old-world detailing, mosaic tile floors, and a modern elegant bar.
Cheyanne was my waitress. She was very kind and made sure I had everything I needed. The She Crap Soup was amazing! It was smooth and buttery. The crab tasted fresh in the soup. I also had a Sea Bass Taco, and that was also delicious. The green papaya slaw paired well with the fish and mole verde. The Chocolate Passion Fruit Bomb was delicious. The passion fruit was not overpowering with the chocolate. The chocolate soil had a nice crunch to it perfect for when it was on the anglaise. The dessert was rich and flavourful. The snowbird cocktail was delicious especially with the toasted coconut and sugar on the rim. Cannot wait to have more of the She Crab Soup.

1st of all, my servers were AMAZING (Karter and Ryan) funny story, Ryan created the drinks i enjoyed and they were so good! I enjoyed the Banana O.F. (🤤), Life is Peachy and 24 Carrot . We also enjoyed the fish wings, but to be honest I thought they were gonna be fish sauce flavored wings, not fish collars with a super amazing flavor. I even enjoyed the pickles on it....PICKLES! 🤯. When you go, and Ryan or Karter with a K serve you, let them know Omar sent you, you will gain nothing by doing so, but who knows right?

We had such a wonderful experience at Saltine tonight! Our server, Alexa, did an amazing job—she was warm, attentive, and truly took great care of us from start to finish. The outdoor terrace offers stunning views of the Elizabeth River and features a fire pit, while inside, twinkling lights illuminate the surrounding trees. Guests can also enjoy a photo booth for capturing memorable moments. The venue provides a relaxed atmosphere to savor drinks and take in the scenic surroundings.
I was on a first date and I must say location is everything atmosphere really sets the tone for how your date is gonna go. My date and I walked in and we were in awe of our surroundings there were lights on trees inside the building. There was a large opening to the top balcony, showing off the beautiful view to the water. There were leather couches that you can sit in and eat, which made it cozy. The staff was helpful and very upbeat. Our waiter was very attentive to our needs always checking in and making sure that we were doing well. Please note although they’re open till midnight their dinner menu ends at 10 then it moves onto late night menu. This is a seat yourself restaurant so when you come in pick a spot, we didn’t know that for sure we thought maybe we would be seated we went straight to the bar and asked bartender was very helpful in telling us about the menu ending and where we could sit. The food was pretty good. The portions aren’t very large so if you’re the type of person that eats like you’re filling up a hollow leg, I would order a little extra to satisfy your hunger. The rooftop view is a vibe of its own. You have open access to it. I will enclose the pictures that I took of my experience. I hope that this was helpful and hope you enjoy your visit there as well. Another thing I forgot to mention is that on the left-hand side just before you walk into the restaurant, there’s a little nook library and a place where you can play pool and shuffleboard. It has the atmosphere of a speakeasy. We played shuffleboard a couple rounds. It was really neat

Great Atmosphere & Service! We had a really nice experience at Grain Restaurant. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff were super attentive and friendly throughout the night. One of the highlights is definitely the rooftop seating – it adds so much charm and enjoyment to the whole experience. Loved the views and the vibe up there! The valet parking was also a big plus, making everything much easier from the start. The food was delicious, and we truly enjoyed every bite. We’ll definitely be coming back again soon. Highly recommended!

Came here for a quick drink and lunch, and they delivered. Great beer selection, the spinach crab dip appetizer was lovely. The cheese steak was great, a little smaller than expected but every bite packed flavor. The fries were incredible and they gave me such a huge portion, it makes up for the smaller sandwich. The vibe was great, very laid back, our server was very helpful and friendly, service was quick, and I left very satisfied, would definitely come here again!

Went for lunch, very busy! Everything tasted good except for the loaded smashed potato, if you’re not a beer cheese fan, you won’t like it. Also, our appetizers came out and the meals 2 minutes later. I absolutely hate when restaurants do this, seems like they’re rushing you. Appetizers should come around the same time as the drinks, and food well after.

The manager was rude and ruined my daughters 21rst birthday! He told her she couldn't take any pics without paying a fee despite the fact we saw others taking pictures! We paid upwards of 200 for cold burnt food. Its odd because itblooked great but tasted charred. Wings were pretty ok but everything else was horrible. The band was great! Our server was top tier! They definitely need new management!! How dare you make a beautiful girl cry over a photo. She looked forward to going to this particular bar to bring her day in for a year! This made the atmosphere uncomfortable. Your first trip to a bar forba drink is supposed to be magical. He turned it to crap.

A really solid place to go. Food was slow to come out but nothing that wouldn’t keep us coming out. The views are great. They have almost too much on tap. And the ambiance and live music was definitely worth the travel. A must try if you are in the neighborhood, at the very least for a drink and look out for the sunset color.

Breakfast restaurant
Handsome Biscuit is a charming breakfast and lunch spot in Ghent, Norfolk, known for its delectable sweet potato biscuit sandwiches. The area's food scene has been evolving, with popular eateries like Handsome Biscuit and Toast drawing attention to the off-the-beaten-path location on Colonial Avenue between W 24th and 26th streets. O'Connor Brewing Company founder Kevin O'Connor speaks highly of these establishments.
First visit and we will definitely be returning! Upon entering, we were asked if it was our first visit. When we said yes, the employee took the time to thoroughly go over the menu with us. She was very friendly and helpful! We ordered the Nashville hot chicken biscuit and made it combos with tots and a drink. They have a good biscuit selection including an option to build your own. There are also sandwiches, wraps, desserts and a great selection of drinks. The biscuit was huge and delicious! Just the right amount of spice and sauce. The tots were hot and crispy. I recommend dipping them in the Comeback Sauce. The lemonade and sweet tea were delicious also! Carry out, delivery and patio seating are the dining options. We sat at the tables outside and while it was fine, please be aware you will have birds sitting on the table right next to you. These birds have no fear. 😂 They obviously know how good these biscuits are too! Seriously though, if you are afraid of birds, the patio is probably not for you!

This was my first time eating here and the food was delicious. The biscuit was so much better than I expected and the loaded tots were great. I will definitely be eating here again when I'm in the area.

I used to love the Nashville Hot. Now what am I supposed to do since I’ve tasted Handsome Biscuit’s rendition? If you’re expecting the Louisiana style hot sauce that gets most of its heat from vinegar, this didn’t quite hit like that. It’s more of a red chile sauce, like what you’d get on an excellent enchilada, except on a perfectly crispy yet tender fried chicken breast. On a big fat tasty biscuit. I’m ruined, cause I don’t live in Norfolk.

I took my mom here. She had the dirty south biscuit. I had the Nashville hot. They were both great. Kyle , Megan , and Darion collectively made it a delicious experience.

Truly awesome food, a must-visit Norfolk gem. Biscuits are perfect, savory and delicious. Chicken classic is fantastic, Comeback sauce is similar to Chick-fil-A sauce. Nuggets and shorty with bacon great as well. Dolly Madison is a must-try dessert, plenty of cream cheese frosting and mixed berry jam to satisfy your sweet tooth! Reasonably priced, fast and friendly service. Update 09/2024: Chicken breakfast wrap and shorty excellent as well, although they forgot to put the bacon we paid for on our shorty :(

There's only outdoor seating if you plan on eating there. On a nice day it's perfect. The staff are very nice and informative. It's kiosk ordering but if you have questions they're right there to answer your questions. Now...to the food. It's worth the money. That Hellafitzgerald and loaded tots were smacking!! If you in Va near downtown Norfolk you gotta give this place a try.

The portions are too small for the price point. The primary flavor is salt and there’s no option to get chicken AND bacon for the wraps. Also, the tea tasted like no one cleaned the tea container. Overall, I may not return to this location.

So my brother suggested this spot, seeing as I was in town visiting... and at first, I was excited at the thought of a tasty biscuit. I got there and was a little disappointed it was just a hole in the wall... I didn't mind the outside eating area - only spot to sit. However, the tables at first were full. You place orders via the kiosk. The wait was about 15 minutes, no more than 20. The young lady who took orders to cars and guests outside was super kind. They had run out of the tots, which was my main selling point in going as well... needless to say, it left sooooo much to be desired. It LOOKS flavorful... but no pizzazz. I'll try them again bc it may have been the order I had. For 18 n change, I expected more. The fries were about 10 waffle fries, give take... Overall- the drinks were cans & a complimentary ice cup. Unless u had tea/juice, etc... The seating, if available, is under a small covered area. I managed to snag a seat last minute by the trash can in the sun. Clearly, folks love this place, and for that, I'll come back! I will try everything twice. Plus my brother likes it... 👍🏾 👌🏾overall not the best but DEFINITELY not the worst. The biscuit alone was 100%. I'd stick to that next time. The other good point is I like that you could order a biscuit "with a twist" midday. Makes biscuits fun.

Barbecue restaurant
Fast food restaurant
Doumar's Cones & Barbecue is a historic, family-owned eatery that has been a staple in Norfolk for over 100 years. It is renowned for its claim to have invented the ice cream cone in 1904 and continues to serve waffle cone ice creams. The menu features classic all-American fare including North Carolina-style barbecue, burgers, hot dogs, and sandwiches.
My mom and I decided to go to Doumar’s for lunch. We have heard about Doumar’s for years, and today was our first time eating there. The cheeseburgers and fries were very good. The simplicity of the food is what makes it good. I ordered a Cherry Coke, and it was delicious since they make it themselves. The hot fudge cake was delicious as well. We will return to try some more of their eats and treats.

Nothing better than Doumar’s. Got a couple of hot dogs with mustard and onions. I love how they chop the onions so fine. It’s not just good food, the service and atmosphere lend to the experience. When I drove by I almost didn’t stop because the place was so busy, the parking lot was almost full. I decided to take a chance, went inside to order takeout. Even though they were full, I only waited a couple of minutes to get my food. It is a madhouse in there with everybody doing their part, making drinks, making dessert, plating the food, and taking the food to the cars. It’s exciting to see old fashion car hops with the trays that hang on the door. Hot dogs are $2.40 each.

Doumar’s in Norfolk is a true local treasure and one of my favorite places to eat in the entire Hampton Roads area. If you’re looking for comforting, old school diner food done right, this is the spot. The BBQ pork sandwich is a must try!!! tender, flavorful, and served with just the right amount of slaw to balance the smoky meat. Their burgers are simple but perfect, griddled to juicy perfection and stacked with classic toppings. The hot dogs have that satisfying snap, and the crinkle cut fries are always hot, crispy, and well seasoned. And the milkshakes? Thick, creamy, and made just how they should be. I highly recommend the chocolate or strawberry, both are rich without being overpowering. Portions are generous, prices are more than fair, and everything comes out fast whether you eat inside or pull up at the drive-in. It’s that kind of food that reminds you why the classics never go out of style. There’s nothing pretentious about Doumar’s, just great food served with care. Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or sitting down for a full meal, this place never disappoints. I’ll keep coming back again and again. Five stars all the way.

Always an amazing diner experience. Wife and I love the nostalgia. My wife's parents had went on their first date here @ Doumars. The hot dogs and burgers are yummy. We got the limited time Pumpkin Shake. The staff are very courteous.

I really wanted Doumar's to be good, but it just missed the mark. Everything was lacking and I won't be going back. First and foremost, the fries had almost no salt on them, making them flavorless. They could have been so good as they were fresh with a light crisp, but no salt left them tasteless. The cheeseburger tasted like almost nothing, with only cheap relish coming through. I don't know how you have a cheeseburger with onions and relish that doesn't taste like beef, cheese, or onion, but that's what I was given. The banana shake, again, was so close to being good but simply flopped. I thought it tasted like nothing but vanilla extract, which was strange, but I got to the bottom of the shake and there were 6 untouched wedges of banana at the bottom. Had it been blended properly, I think the shake would've been great but alas. The BBQ pork sandwich is fine enough, the pork just didn't taste like much so it was a slaw and hot sauce situation. Overall, it feels like there was a real lack of effort with the food. The service and ambiance were fantastic and exactly what you would hope for, but I can't get past how mediocre/bad the food was. I'd love to support a local, historical business but how could I when every single item was worse/more expensive than the Cookout across the street.

Brings joy to my heart! Excellent service, good food, fair prices, creamy shakes.
Sally M — Google review
Overall it wasn’t bad. The food was okay. No plates were kind of weird. The food comes in plastic wrap and they don’t have plates available if you ask. The burger was pretty bad. It was dry. The pulled pork was better but nothing special. The atmosphere was on point. Exactly what you expect so that was cool. The food portions and small and each food item is cheap. But this causes you to order a lot to get full and I spent $20. Also there is a 2.5% service charge on credit cards. I don’t blame them on that but just so you’re aware. Overall I’d go back but I wouldn’t go out of my way to go back.

Absolutely loved our experience! The prices were very reasonable, especially considering the classy and elegant atmosphere that truly feels like a sophisticated library, museum or upscale cafe. The furniture and views added to the relaxing vibe, making it a perfect spot to unwind. The service was attentive and friendly. We made a reservation and enjoyed the full breakfast buffet…delicious and filling. Parking was convenient, with free parking at E. Plume St. Parking Garage for up to 2 hours, plus valet options. We can’t wait to return and try their dinner menu.

Absolutely beautiful restaurant inside the Hilton on the second floor. The appetizers Artichoke and Foam ricotta with honey glaze was excellent. Our main entree of garlic, evoo her pasta was nice and house made tagliatelle with pecorino was nice but not amazing. The margarita pizza was average and little cold. The waitress forgot to charge us for the bottle of wine so added it on. She should have gone over the dessert menu but seemed a little rushed. Overall the setting and so superb and price is reasonable that should give it a try

Jordan was an amazing server— the bomb dot com! The food was delicious, the service even better. We wanted to go to the wine dinner but missed out on buying tickets and they even gave us a course to try on the house! Love this place!

My wife and I had a wonderful experience. We started out with the Artichoke Romano appetizer, which was delicious and full of flavor. For entrées, we ordered the steak and chicken parm—both were cooked perfectly and absolutely hit the spot. The ambiance of the restaurant was warm and inviting, creating a perfect setting for a relaxed evening out. A special shoutout to our server, Evan, who was fantastic—attentive, friendly, and on top of every detail throughout the night. Highly recommend!

The perfect spot for an upscale dining experience. Ashley was our waitress and provided us with top notch service. Arancini’s were delightful. Rigitoni bolognese was the best I have ever had! The restaurant itself is breathtaking. Come dine at Varia for grade A service and food.
