San Ignacio

San Ignacio is a town in the Cayo District of western Belize, on the banks of the Macal River. It’s linked to the town of Santa Elena by the metal suspension Hawksworth Bridge. On a hill south of town are the Mayan ruins of Cahal Pech, abandoned in the 9th century. There is a small museum amid the plazas and temples. Nearby, the Rainforest Medicine Trail explores the medicinal properties of indigenous plants.

The Green Iguana Conservation Project at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel is a unique initiative aimed at raising awareness and educating both visitors and locals about the endangered green iguanas. The program offers hands-on interaction with these fascinating creatures, providing insight into their entire life cycle from egg to rearing. Situated atop a hill amidst 14 acres of rainforest, the resort is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including 150 bird species and 70 types of trees and plants.
We had an amazing time with the Iguanas and a very nice and knowledgeable tour guide! We were able to touch and hold some of the iguanas and we’ve seen the younger ones that will be put in the wild one day. This is an amazing place that isn’t a zoo because its main purpose is to help animals and not to please people. I love the job that they are doing with trying to increase the iguanas’ population. I recommend it to everyone. The place is located at the back of the hotel, you need to buy a ticket at the front desk. Tours are available every hour at an even o’clock. Luckily, there were only the two of us so we got a private tour 😍 one of my favorite experiences in Belize!
Marta C — Google review
We stayed at the hotel so it was a very easy choice to check out the Iguana sanctuary on a day when we got some rain. Rodolfo was our guide, he was great! he was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the iguanas. We were able to each hold an adult iguana and also see some of the younger iguanas. Highly recommend this 1hr tour, price was very reasonable and we enjoyed it so much!
Carri H — Google review
What an experience! To start with the place is in a gorgeous hotel and the staff are so lovely. The tours run on the hour. We met the guy and he was super knowledgeable and made us feel at ease with the iguana. We learned so much about them! They’re precious animals and we must look after them. If you have kids or are just visiting San Ignacio, this place is a must!!
Leonardo R — Google review
It was slow season for tourism so I essentially had a private tour Rodolfo who was very knowledgeable about the iguanas. He even pointed out a wild black iguana that was in a tree at the hotel where the project was located. I highly recommend booking this tour as the funds help protect these lovely creatures. I learned so much about iguanas in Belize and really enjoyed getting to feed and pet them.
Amy T — Google review
You can tell that the staff here really enjoys what they do. The conservation work is important, and you learn so much about the iguanas. I highly recommend a visit! The tour starts every hour so plan accordingly.
Miriam — Google review
Excellent experience and very informative discussion about Iguanas. We gained a greater appreciation for them and an understanding for their preservation.
Chris H — Google review
A must see at San Ignacio! You get to learn about the iguanas, hold them, and donate to their conservation! A tour starts every hour from 8:00 to 16:00. Absolutely amazing place! 🦎❤️
Shachar G — Google review
tours are every hour, our tour guide was really informative and funny! Saw baby iguanas as it was just after mating season and got to safely hold some of the adult ones! Great conservation project and good afternoon activity!

Market
San Ignacio Market is a vibrant and bustling place filled with an array of tropical fruits waiting to be discovered. Visitors can stroll through the market, sampling exotic fruits they may have never seen before. The market also offers a variety of Belizean street food such as fry jacks and salbutes, providing a true taste of local flavors. On Saturdays, the city comes alive with a thriving weekend market where local vendors showcase their fresh produce and handmade crafts.
Very accessible for both locals and visitors. Right in town and has many different fruits and vegetables. Food section is affordable as well with many different options to choose from. The river view is great and gift shops aren’t too far. You might even be able to see wildlife such as beautiful birds.
Zaiben Z — Google review
Nice. Local and authentic food. I was short on time. So couldn’t try !!
R K — Google review
A lot of vendors, large selection of fresh fruit and vegetables. Souvenir stands, and some lovely food stands with great, rustic hearty food.
Ombretta H — Google review
Encourage all travelers to visit here for fresh foods and much more reasonable prices than the local grocery/quick shops. Fresh food, tomatoes, peppers, melons, seasonings, etc.. even two meat stores.
Alan D — Google review
Great place, we get fruit and veggies there through week. Most tourist vendors open weekends, only go when we have company.
Margie — Google review
I travel for many reasons and I always seek out a local market. To me it’s the essence of a community. Where people come to buy fresh food, catch up with friends, share a meal and much more. Today I was in my element. It’s my happy place to be immersed into a countries culture, food and meeting the locals. I would highly recommend you come early and have some breakfast. Plenty of stalls to choose from. Takeaway or sit in and chat to the person across the table from you. Apart from fruit and veggies, spices and herbs, there are clothes and homewares plus a few souvenir style stalls. There are toilets onsite which will cost you $1 BZ and you’ll be given a few sheets of toilet paper. A must visit in San Ignacio.
Debi S — Google review
Great place to get local food and fruits. Saturdays is market day in San Ignacio and all the local vendors and people come out to shop and mingle.
Authentically B — Google review
A wonderful local market. We visited and gathered fresh vegetables and meats for our dinner each day while we stayed San Ignacio the people were extraordinarily friendly a great place to visit if you’re in the area.

Ancient Ruins
Cahal Pech Archaeological Reserve is a significant site dating back to 1200 BCE, showcasing ceremonial Mayan temples and stunning vistas. The ruins feature corbeled arches, a distinctive characteristic of pre-Columbian Mesoamerican constructions and Maya architecture. Located near San Ignacio Town, it offers access to ancient structures, intricate stone carvings, and panoramic views of the rainforest.
Amazing experience. Take a cab up here and save your legs for climbing. The steps here are pretty steep. If you read in the visitor center you learn they were not made for every day climbing, that only the privilege do it. Can be slippery after a rain storm. Worthy of the $10 USD. Perhaps better if done with a guide?
Daniel N — Google review
Pretty cool site to explore! We were able to get lots of great pictures on the Mayan ruins with no one else around! Definitely recommend to those coming to San Ignacio! Only costs 20 belize currency!
Max H — Google review
This was the most breathtaking thing I've done in Belize. I had a great fortune of getting to experience the site alone, I felt like royalty. It's such a massive site, and would make a perfect day out of anyone.
Callum W — Google review
A relatively small Mayan temple site, it was occupied for most all of Mayan civilization. Very close to town, so easy to visit if you are short on time. Interesting museum and small gift shop.
Glen J — Google review
Wonderful piece of history. Please be advised that their hours of operation are incorrect. They open at 6am and close at 5pm. However, the last entry into the site is 4pm. We arrived at 4:15pm thinking they closed at 6pm (according to Google) only to be denied entry. They do not have an hours of operation sign posted otherwise I would have took a photo. Besides this issue, we returned the following day and got to experience this ancient site for all its wonder. I absolutely love that you are able to climb them. Beware another reviewer also mentions a room within a room with bats on the ceiling. Bathrooms were clean and small information center was decent for what it is. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area and have time.
Annette F — Google review
Very cool archaeological site with lots to see and tons of fascinating history. If you're considering going I recommend not buying tickets in advance. I bought mine online and there was some confusion. It'd likely be easier to have just bought them at the entrance. Definitely recommend all tourists to visit Cahal Pech!
Nathaniel C — Google review
A 20 minutes from town. Had the whole place to myself. A great way to fill in a couple of hours. The museum is very educational about the history of Belize.
J C — Google review
It is interesting to walk around, but it certainly doesn’t compare to its neighbors. Also, the check-in process is rather laborious. With a drivers license age and name. Seems like a lot of paperwork for such a small experience.

The Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave, a national park in Belize, is a must-visit destination and one of the top 10 things to do in the country. Great customer service.

Great place! Food was made fresh. A bit pricey for the area, but worth it if you can splurge a little. A frog or toad jumped out of the planters onto the floor a couple times, that was cool :) You'll want to get a reservation during peak tourist season.

I wanted to check out this highly rated, buzzy restaurant during my stay in San Ignacio. The restaurant did not disappoint with its romantic interior that naturally blends the indoors to the outdoors. The food was solid, though not as incredible as I had expected given all the rave reviews. I ordered the chicken lettuce wraps and everything was well prepared though nothing stood out. The service was warm and attentive. Prices were on the high end for Belize, but not unreasonable.

This place is great. But certainly not amazing. I think in comparison of other available options in San Ignacio it’s at the top. But my pork chops looked more like Kalbi and the ceviche barely had any flavor. But again, realistic expectations make this place a go to if you’re in the area.

Ko-Ox Han Nah, which means "let's go eat" in Mayan, is a popular dining spot in San Ignacio Town. Despite its unassuming exterior, the restaurant offers a diverse menu featuring a mix of Indian and Belizean cuisine. The simple yet cozy ambiance adds to the charm of this establishment. Guests can enjoy dishes such as Indian curry and Belizean rice and beans all under one roof.
I stayed a few days in San Ignacio and this was by far my favorite restaurant in the area. We liked it so much, we came back for a second dinner and breakfast too. I tried the NY Strip steak first. It was cooked nicely and was delicious. I tried the pork shank next. It was absolutely amazing, fall of the bone with a wonderful taste. The lamb curry was probably my favorite and I’m not a fan of curry. Breakfast was awesome, the eggs were done to perfection, bacon was spectacular and the omelette was amazing. The servers were outstanding and very attentive. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Mark J — Google review
After getting multiple recommendations, we decided to give it a try. It did not disappoint. Great atmosphere, very friendly staff, and really good authentic cuisine. I recommend the vegetable soup and the fish. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to try the cow foot soup. We had dinner there two days in a row, and it's a 2 minute walk from Martha's guest house.
SHAZAM L — Google review
Don’t understand the hype. Didn’t find the food too nice. We ordered a chicken curry and the chicken had a funny taste we didn’t eat it. We gave it a second chance and had the pork tacos. They were nice but super mega oily and so was the plantain portion. The service is good just wish they didn’t take our plates right after we finished eating it’s of bad taste. The food also takes a while, but I think it’s a thing in Belize. Don’t go if you’re on a rush
Leonardo R — Google review
Food was great, quesadilla was huge and delicious. I had also the whole fish and my husband the chicken curry. Everything was delicious. My husband had strawberry ice cream for dessert and I had the flan. Everything was perfect. The picture shows half of the quesadilla.

One of the best value for money in San Ignacio. Great quality of food, made with local products, big portions and tasty. Also a big plus for the option to pay by card and a selection of Belizean Craft beers
Thanasis Z — Google review
Ate here twice in 2 days. Great value, taste, and customer service. I made customized requests on both occasions and they were all accommodated without any issues. Among the very best in San Ignacio!

I’ve been here twice — once for the lamb curry and the other time for the shrimp quesadillas. The lamb curry was good, no complaints… but the quesadillas? Maaammiiii. Absolutely amazing!

Restaurant
Crave House of Flavour, located in San Ignacio, is a new addition to the dining scene and has quickly gained a reputation as one of the best places to eat in town. Chef Alejandro's culinary creations take center stage in this cozy establishment, where diners can witness their orders being prepared with care and skill. The restaurant's close proximity to downtown and The Ice-cream Shoppe makes it easily accessible.
I am still remembering the amazing hamburger that we had here. The drinks were also very good, and we loved how they had infused drinks. We liked it so much at lunchtime we came back for dinner.

Food was INCREDIBLE and portions super generous The owner and service was absolutely AMAZING HIGHLY recommend!! My son said it was the best birthday meal of his life And he’s had some amazing meals

Best.Cuisine.In San Ignacio! 💥 I stand by that headline. Pros: Atmosphere feels like a true upscale bistro without being pretentious. Very robust wine selection - but we enjoyed the Sangria, which is offered as either white or red wine base. THE FOOD!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We had the baby back ribs, chicken paupiette, and the chocolate roulade for desert. The meat on the ribs was fall-off-the-bone, cooked to perfection with a superb sweet+smokey housemade bbq sauce. The chicken paupiette was moist, tender and flavorful. Desert: The chocolate roulade is a dark chocolate & ice cream lovers perfection. The cake was spongey and decadent, without being dry or too cold and was filled with a light mocha ice cream. - If you don't like it, I'll pay for shipping to eat it 😀. Presentation: all of the dishes are plated and served with an eye for detail you might find in a Michelin star restaurant. Price: Worth. Every. Penny Cons: - I can't eat here every week..

Had a great Saturday out at Crave , food was amazing and delicious and the drinks ( mango 🥭 margarita ) with a hint of spice was one of the best I tasted before .

Be aware of that there’s 10% service fee automatically added to your bill. The waiter didn’t mention it up front. You have to carefully check otherwise you won’t even recognize it. Otherwise the service is good and the food is above average.

Vegan/vegetation options! They have a chickpea burger and a hummus plate. I got my chickpea burger with a side of sautéed veggies and fries. So good!

If you’re looking for the best restaurant in the Western Highlands of Belize then this is your spot. Misael the waiter at his sister Melissa’s place will treat you to a wonderful dining experience. It could work as a romantic dinner spot for two or as a family. My wife and I ate there with our 3 children and it was amazingly delicious. My wife is vegetarian and had the carrot ginger soup as a starter and I he vegetarian risotto and loved them both. I had a salad and the short ribs risotto and they were both fantastic. I had a spicy margarita which was wonderful. They have a great selection of drinks The kids loved there meals too. The dining room is small and tight but worth the wait. Outside there is an open air bar where you can dine and drink. The decor is quaint and relaxing. They have tasty desserts but we went for ice cream next door.

Breakfast restaurant
Pop's Restaurant, located in downtown San Ignacio, Belize, is a beloved establishment known for its exceptional breakfast offerings. The restaurant has been serving up classic American breakfast dishes alongside traditional Belizean favorites for decades. Visitors can enjoy a hearty 'Belizean Breakfast' featuring beans, cheese, ham or bacon, eggs, and avocado served with handmade flour tortillas or Belizean fry jacks. On weekends, the restaurant buzzes with local families who have made it a tradition to dine there.
The orange juice was good. They do add water to it so it’s not 100% freshly squeezed. The flour tortillas with butter were the best! Kids like the waffles. Overall good and good prices. It’s a small place. They do take cards for those traveling.

The food was Amazing. Will definitely go back again when I visit Belize. The only thing was that I wanted some more fresh pepper sauce but they ran out. Other than that I enjoyed the food.

We arrived in town early and couldn’t check in yet, so we stopped at this café on recommendation. The breakfast was delicious and exactly what we needed after an early start. Coffee refills were free, and everything was served with a smile. The place is very clean, well managed, and the staff are friendly and attentive. Another plus—no extra charge for paying by card. Highly recommended.

Had an amazing full English breakfast, I asked as a special request, the manager has family in the UK. I had 3 bacon, 3 sausage, 2 eggs, chips and heinz baked beans. I believe it's the only resturant/ cafe that does a proper uk style fry up. It's not on the menu but if you ask they'll sort it out for you!

Pops food was good we got Fry Jacks with out food, light fluffy fried bread pillows. Could have had a little more beans, and longaniza
Abe M — Google review
Food was not special, but okay. Service was good. However, i believe the lady charged us double price. This was our first stop in belize and we weren’t sure if the menu was in belizean dollars or USD. So we paid in USD (exact amount) and she didn’t give back anything. Afterwards, we see all menus everywhere being in BZD… if it was in USD, then the food is overpriced, if it wasn’t, we got scammed.

Erva’s Restaurant is a highly regarded dining spot in San Ignacio, known for its authentic Belizean cuisine and warm, rustic ambiance. Situated just 0.1 miles from The West House Boutique Hotel, this cozy restaurant offers traditional dishes like Stewed Chicken with Rice and Beans and Fry Jacks that capture the essence of Belizean home-cooking.
Came with a large group and had a great meal. The ceviche was delicious, clean crisp and flavorful. You definitely need to ask for more chips to go with it as it’s a hearty portion. The fried Chaya was also delicious, I chose it because I had never tried it before, great earthy taste and accompanied by onions and peppers. I had the BBQ pork rib, the only negative was that I felt that it was overly spiced and this took away from the taste of the BBQ. I would probably not have it again and go for the whole fried fish (Snapper) that was amazing. Service and hospitality and homemade hot sauce were exceptional. Definitely recommend if you’re in San Ignacio!

I ordered the pork and rice and beans. It was very dry. The rice and beans were fine. The chicken cordon bleu was tasty, but a small portion for the price. As someone said, it does take a long time for the meal, but it is cooked fresh. Service was okay- took a star off for taking a while with the drinks and forgetting my order.
Lisa — Google review
Not impressed with this restaurant. We got curry. The service was really really really slow and you can tell people weren’t enjoying themselves. Which I’m all good with taking their time especially how they make things to order but this was beyond that. The food was a really dry as well. There wasn’t one thing I really love to be honest.
Kenzie W — Google review
It was a pretty good restaurant I had the fried fish and rice and beans. I do feel like the fish was a bit small for the price but it was cooked very well. The rice and beans was a bit salty for my personal liking but still tasted very well. The inside of the restraint was very small but nice and can get very crowded. So expect your service to be a lot slower. The drink I had was great which was the toasted almond ! I highly recommend. Overall I would come back!

Food - 10/10 Vegan/vegetarian friendly We had the rice and stew beans with chaya, and the veggie coconut curry—easily some of the best food I’ve ever had. Every bite was super flavorful. My wife usually doesn’t say much while eating, but with this meal, she was complimenting it after every bite. We loved it so much, we went back a second time. If they were open on Sunday, we definitely would’ve gone again. The vibe is relaxed, the ambiance is chill, and the staff is really attentive. Absolutely loved the place—already missing the food!

I was actually turned away by the restaurant when I stepped in. They asked if I had a reservation and I said no. I was told the restaurant was full and there was no place for me, but I told them I wanted to try the food here and it was my last night in San Ignacio. They told me even if I wait I might have to wait for 2 hours for food to be served because there were like 2 tables of more than 10 pax. I told them I am willing to wait, and I quickly took order while the kitchen was preparing food for the first big table, and the second table would be arriving in 10 minutes. It went well cause they managed to get me a table in a corner and the food only took 30 minutes to arrive. Probably I ordered the easier dish to prepare. The butter and garlic shrimp was flavourful and I loved the sauce so much it helped me to finish all the rice. I loved the coconut rice as well it was so fragrant and delicious. I have to say they also serve one of the better shakes I have tried in Belize. Recommended and probably good to make reservations in advance as well.

We were in San Ignacio walking in town and looking for a restaurant with AC. It was very hot and humid. We found this restaurant in Google Maps with very good reviews. It wasn’t busy. The bartender welcomed us. The restaurant was nicely decorated and had warm ambiance. The kitchen is visible and it was interesting to watch the cooks. I think that our server was not very experienced. We enjoyed our lunch. The owner introduced himself and mentioned that Erva was his mother and now retired.
