Watamu

Watamu is a small coastal town in Kenya, north of Mombasa. It’s known for Watamu Marine National Park and Reserve, which has 3 bays: Watamu, Blue Lagoon and Turtle. Mida Creek offers a serene sailing experience on a traditional dhow, with the option to enjoy cocktails or mocktails while witnessing the stunning sunset. The creek is surrounded by mangroves and palms, forming the Mida Creek Reserve, an impressive tidal ecosystem that provides a habitat for diverse bird species and marine life. Visitors can partake in various activities throughout the day, such as canopy walks, canoe rides to nearby islands, and guided tours.
Bird watching was a waste of cash. Just do boardwalk and just wait for the water to return. Enjoy educational experience from the guide especially on mangrove and it's restoration

It was a great experience on the Mida Creek with a canoe. The mangrove was a nice sight as well, and you can alight at a nearby small island and be shown around by the tour guide

Wonderful place and location, beautiful and comfortable stays. The hospitality was amazing and were received with very warm welcome. One roundtrip free boat ride to other side of the island is icing on the cake. Staff is very helpful. All services are worth 5 stars. Definitely coming back soon :)

Friemdly staff, beautiful view. The sundowner canoe ride was the highlight of my trip!

Mida Creek is a sigh to behold!!! Very beautiful place to visit, here’s why; 1. It has activities you can do the whole day, canopy walk, canoe ride to the nearby islands and a tour on one of the islands 2. They have amazing guides who are well informed, respectful and kind 3. You get to experience a “musical” on the canoe ride back 4. You can swim in the ocean while you’re at it All these activities are dependent on the energy your friends have and I recommend you carry some food coz it’s a long one!!! They also have a restaurant, so no pressure if you won’t carry any! Also, you can’t stay there till late because the water literally gets to the office area, so beware of that! Enjoy your visit!

We had an amazing experience. We called Harrison and informed him we would have two dog's, and he was more then Happy to welcome them. We were served fresh coconut water on arrival. I was concerned about the rest of the group we would join with having dogs, and they were very happy to have them on board, upon Harrison asking them, they even keept checking on them held the leaseh. And always asked if we need help with them, thank you. The captain took us on our walk to the canoe. He even handled my bigger very well. We had some very fresh oysters on the way. He shared alot of knowledge and information of the area. They sang songs on the canoe and it was full of energy and brought alot of good energy, it's something to definitely experience, words would not explain the feeling. We wanted the Honey, but it wasn't available and he was very kind to deliver it the next day to our accomodation. We meet Harrison on our way out, and he was so pleased for us visiting him, he has such a pleasant welcome, as it dint feel like see you sometime, it felt like this is home. Thank you to all his staff on the canoe they made this experience joyful and full of energy. And thank you for allowing my dog's, as this whole trip was for them since we don't know how long we may have with one of them, it meant alot.

Exceptional place to visit. Pristine areas of mangroves, one of the most important coastal ecosystems. Guides available were very knowledgeable (ask for Juma). Plants nursery led by women and small restaurant available on site.
Mathew R — Google review
As this place slowly picks up as a tourist destination, it is important to know that it is ran by the community and proceeds go to the community. They have Mangrove Nurseries and a man made bridge to experience the mangrove forest. They hire out crocs to people without for KSHS.50 or $0.5 because of the mud and because you cannot walk barefoot. Better bring your pair. They are involved in arts and craft as well.

The rubbish and plastic on the beach is such a shame, so much that we were lost for words - very sad to see for a nature reserve. See attached images just how bad it is…

Watamu beach has to be the most safest beach I have been to in my history of traveling to coast. I got to visit love island and I love the clear white sand waters.

If you looking for a perfect beach experience between Kilifi and Malindi, then Watamu is the place to be!
Peter O — Google review
Watamu has a very unique and interesting beach experience. A large portion of the coast is covered tall rock cliffs. This lends itself to some every unique exploring and some cool stuff to see. High tide is beautiful with the waves crashing over the rocks. The beach portions are predominantly white sand and are great for sandcastle building or beach sports. The wildlife is less than some other parts of the coast and the sunrise/sunset can be hard to see because of the coves, however it's a gorgeous place to live or vacation.

Was beautiful, enjoyed snorkeling and watching the dolphins.I loved feeding the eels in the mornings too.The beach guides can help know the places to visit around.

Gede Ruins in Watamu is an ancient Swahili settlement abandoned in the mid-17th century. The site includes a fortress, mosques, tombs, and villages within a tropical forest inhabited by monkeys and other wildlife. Visitors can hire guides who provide informative tours of the area. It's recommended to bring snacks like nuts or bananas for the monkeys or buy them at the gate. The ruins are photogenic and well-maintained, offering a great representation of nature.
Learning about the history of the site was the most interesting thing. Like how smart our forefathers were and their great interventions. I got a great tour guide who is well versed with the history. I also bought some very good quality Honey from the community hub.

Gede is a Must See If you ever step your feet in Watamu! The history here is deep, the energy is different. You explore this beautiful old city which is slowly being overtaken by nature.

A great place to visit for history and nature lovers. Fantastic tour guides - we were in Alpha's capable hands.
Karolina M — Google review
I recommend visiting the ruins of guede, you can learn interesting things from a guide about the history of this place. There are also monkeys on the site that you can feed bananas. You can spend time nice.
Łukasz H — Google review
For Kenya it is slightly below average. I’ve been to the National Museum in Nairobi and it’s 3.5 star. In Lamu, I have went to an Oman funded Fort Lamu and that is 4 star. Gede is rough due to funding so you can walk everywhere without restriction. The guide (tip based 500-1000 KES) with two masters and will get his PhD in archaeology, he said they cleaned up 20% of the site so the majority of 45 acres is untouched. There is NOT a lot of information so a guide might be nice. They have the royal palace, the mosque with a huge roof made of corral that has degraded to nonexistent but there is a 1 ton piece laying around. There are old school toilets (pitrene) that it a huge hole that would be cleaned out in past times every few months — while washing areas would be cleaned out less frequently. The prime existence was 1100-1300 AD (I think I heard him say that and might have been abandoned by 1500-1700s). They don’t know why but the guide suggests lack of fresh water (since the wells would fill with salt water if they dug deeper) but also could be colonialism and fighting. Log in for a ticket could take 10-30 minutes bc the internet is slow. They prefer credit card or online ticket purchase but cash is last ditch. So if you can, pre buy before driving here. Total time to see the area is 45 - 60 minutes. Note I rode a “bikebike” motorbike that took an hour plus for 2500 KES round trip. A private car is 4000 each way but if you negotiate and ride BOTH ways, you might be able to get it for 5000 KES ($40). That should take 30 minutes plus. The matatu (privately owned but called a public bus) is closer to 90 minutes.
Justin L — Google review
Our guide Peter was so nice, the history of the Gede ruins was a true discovery and the storytelling of Peter brought us back to the Omani Sultanate times. The guide helps you through the payment process however, small tip: charge your MPESA to pay.

Great place to learn about an ancient town. Really interesting facts. You can get a guide assigned to you upon arrival.

The visit to the Gede ruins is a great activity in Watemu or on your way to Malindi. The local guides are organized with hands on informatuon about the history of the ruins. They also offer a great photo opp. Quite an interesting visit, I would recommend it

Embark on an unforgettable adventure at the Arabuko Sokoke Forest KFS Gede Gate, a stunning coastal reserve located just north of Mombasa. This expansive 420 square kilometer forest is a treasure trove of biodiversity, boasting over 260 bird species including vibrant sunbirds and elusive ground thrushes. As you wander through its lush landscapes, keep your eyes peeled for fascinating reptiles and amphibians like the twig snake and squeaker frog.
I would like to recommend visit to arabuko sokoke forest to all the nature lovers. I would also like to recommend a tour guide Mr Jonathan Baya who will enhance your experience with his proffesional guidance and ability to spot and name animals around. We were really impressed by his experience and knowledge. Thanks Jonathan.

I went with a group of students and hired two guides with the intention of seeing elephants. Although we arrived on time, we were taken on an unsolicited walk through the forest, which wasted time. By the time they finally brought us to the elephant area, it was already getting dark and we didn’t see any elephants. One of our buses couldn’t fit down the path, so we had to walk in small groups, but soon they realized the park was closing. We ended up scattered, with some students alone at the entrance in the dark, unsupervised. It was our van driver, acting on his own, who rescued those left along the path in the dark. Very poorly organized and unsafe. Not recommended.

Watamu Marine National Park is a renowned snorkeling spot located just 4.2 kilometers from Watamu town in Kenya. It boasts crystal-clear waters teeming with over 600 species of fish and vibrant live corals, making it an ideal destination for snorkeling. Visitors can also enjoy dhow cruises in the afternoon, offering stunning sunset views and breakfast on the beautiful creek surrounded by mangrove forests.
Finding a reliable and affordable boat tour through the marine park can be difficult, but it's still a must visit place. The ecosystem here is so diverse and beautiful, and a good tour guide will show you so many unique aspects of life on the coast.

I don't know how it is during the low season but we came during Christmas time and honestly it is a complete shame, The departing site and organisation is a complete mess. You can see in the pictures attached what is the " glass" boat, just a small dirty plexiglass frame! 20+ boat full of noisy Italian tourist side by side chasing these poor dolphins, one of the boats overturned in the waves. The snorkeling spot doesn't worth it at all, hundred of people in the sea, dead corail, see weeds and only few fishs. Even the equipment that had been given to us is crappy and dirty.
Elodie D — Google review
I loved this Value for money for sure Here's the thing, get there early if you wanna see the dolphins but the season for that I was informed is November to December The other thing, after seeing the dolphins, there's snorkeling... I'm not yet adventurous for that😅😅 But I'll try that next time Afterwards, you're taken to the shallow waters to either play with the sand or swim And then lunch afterwards to try the sea food, mostly octopus, prawns and lobsters Then later a canoe ride in a certain creek at the island you're taken to And then back to the starting point It's a whole day activity so you'll have a lot of fun. Should cost you utmost 3,500ksh. Worth it💯💯
Edwin M — Google review
It was a good place to visit, I did the full day but the half day could have seen the same thing because the lunch they served wasn't the best.
Anthony A — Google review
Unfortunately the trip which is offered as a "blue safari", it's just a boat ride, depends on the boat, you can share it with up to 40(!) other people. In our case the "glass floor" was not even uncovered, but I guess there would be not so much to see anyways... We saw a few dolphins, and the snorkeling place was extremely crowded. I saw 5 or 6 fish, and some seaweed. Sad experience unfortunately. Only after we made a trip, we read that the reef in Watamu is basically dead. Lunch in the mangrove forest is nice, but I guess one can do it without booking a special trip. In general it's a waste of time and money.
Olga C — Google review
We did a half day tour, started with dolphin watching, there was one boat leaving when we arrived so we had an enjoyable experience even got to swim there. Snorkeling..there is one site and it can get crowded, there were 2 boats when we arrived but about 8 at its peak. We did a private tour so it was on our schedule some boats seemed to be there only 20 mins.. I would recommend booking a private boat, it is worth it. Some good fish viewing but coral not the best. Half day is enough.

Restaurant
Crab Shack Dabaso, located in Watamu, is a community-run restaurant built by the Dabaso Creek Conservation Group. It aims to promote eco-friendly activities and protect the environment. The restaurant is well-known for its famous crab samosas and boardwalk. When searching for dining options in Watamu, Crab Shack often appears as a popular choice.
Nothing can beat walking to your candlelit restaurant across the boardwalks through the mangroves to watch the sunset over the lake whilst eating fresh prawns, crab, and lobster. I didn't get any photos of the food, mainly as it was too good not to eat immediately! In many ways, I want this to stay a hidden gem as it's an amazing find, but they deserve every success as the restaurant is a local community project and does so much good for the local area and habitat. Five stars, amazing!

Crab Shack is a gem — the sunset views are absolutely breathtaking, and the whole place has a quirky, charming vibe. I had the chili crab and it was delicious — full of flavor and perfectly cooked. It’s a fun, relaxed spot that’s also great for solo travelers. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Watamu. P.s. you need to reserve for the seats by the edge of the deck.
Kalkidan G — Google review
Went for a sunset dinner. The crab samosas are PHENOMENAL. We shared a seafood platter. The seafood was fresh, tasty and perfectly seasoned! The octopus and prawns were the highlight of the platter! Definitely the best seafood I’ve had. Service was also good and the ambiance is relaxed with an amazing view of the sunset on the creek!

The Crab Shack in Dabaso is a charming spot set on a wooden boardwalk overlooking the mangroves, offering a truly magical atmosphere. The seafood is fresh and perfectly prepared, with the crab being a must-try house specialty. Friendly, attentive staff and stunning views make it an ideal place for a memorable meal in Watamu.
Antonio L — Google review
We saw the sun go down in real time. I really loved walking through the mangroves to get to the restaurant. It was a bit crowded when we went, its probably not like that all the time. Service was good.
Kunda B — Google review
Beautiful. Book table in advance. Ask for a table fronting the ocean. Fairly priced. Full of tourists. The culinary experience is worth the visit.
Kakai E — Google review
Generally good food, but compared to other also nice places quite expensive. Annoying was though that they had several big groups coming/going/changing during sunset. Despite a reservation the day before, we had a table rather in the middle, and it was super disturbing that so many people were mingling around you trying to get a view of the sunset and taking pictures (such that we couldn't see it anymore as they were standing in front of us). This would have been acceptable for a bar but not for a nice restaurant...

Papa Remo Beach is a popular spot in Watamu, located right in the center of the favorite beach area. The nearby 8-room villa and Rafiki Tamu Residential Resort offer convenient accommodations for visitors. At Papa Remo Beach restaurant, guests can sit on the deck and enjoy stunning views of cupcake-shaped coral islands with emerald green icing, as well as golden sandbars and shallow translucent pools along the crescent-shaped beach.
The main restaurant was fully booked when we arrived, but they still proposed us to use the low tables to have lunch. It is still better to make a reservation in high season, like in many places in Watamu. The staff was really kind and professional. The food was very good, we tried some pizze, pasta and salad + desserts. A little minus for the chocolate mousse that was not very good ( especially compared to the delicious chocolate ice cream), I was expecting something with a strongest chocolate taste.
Elodie D — Google review
A lovely location to enjoy some good food. The service was friendly and very quick. We had the passion fruit ceviche- it was well presented- it however didn’t pack a punch of flavour as I thought it would. The seafood platter was generous and definitely needed 2 people to do it justice. All pieces of seafood were perfectly good - including the octopus which wasn’t rubbery- and the seafood was well seasoned. This was an enjoyable dish. Wrapped up the meal with the chocolate mousse. A generous portion but could use a stronger chocolate flavour. The location is lovely. We went on a Friday evening so it was quiet. We were told the parties the location is popular for was the next day ☺️.

My team and I were lucky to be in Watamu on the same weekend when the Papa Remo Beach Party was happening. The atmosphere was amazing – great vibes, good music, and refreshing drinks. The only downside: service at the bar was a bit slow. At times, we had to wait up to 15 minutes just to get a drink. With a simple briefing for the staff, this could easily be improved. Still, nothing to complain about overall – Papa Remo remains one of the best beach locations with excellent music and a fantastic party mood. Just keep in mind, the beach party does not take place every weekend. Best to check the Papa Remo website for upcoming events.

At Papa Remo you eat exceptionally well — fresh, summery Italian seafood cuisine with top-quality service, all while enjoying a breathtaking view of a dreamy beach

If yoi like permanent entertainment from at least 5 guys, loud discussions about who is getting the job and three guys to follow you into the water every time - then that is your place. Location staff is okish but compared to other locations around more or less average. Made better experiences around. Left early on Friday due to permanent stalking from beach sellers even the locations own Massai guard could hardly deal with. Location cool. Unfortunately young locals and sugar daddies ruin it
Ma K — Google review
The location is just one of the best you’ll ever come across. Food portions are small ! DJ on sat 20 September really killed the vibe which was such a pity. Tables cleared out when he stopped and started music played it loud, switched it off completely and then comes in with full volume. Please please get some consistency with the music
BIANCA S — Google review
Great Saturday party. However, the DJ really brought down the energy. The crowd was ready to enjoy the night, but his constant talking interrupted the vibe instead of keeping the music flowing. If the owner is reading this, consider firing Suleiman. A good set would have made a big difference.
Shipra S — Google review
PapaRemo is a must since many years. Excellent beach in low and high tide , i confirm lot of beach Boys, but this is universal problem , it doesn't depend by management (several solutions proposed by Government but nothing appears really serious). By me it's more thank 15 years i enjoy simple fantastic "insalata PapaRemo" and i feel satisfied. In beach Party , very often with 1300/1500 guests , you live typical african picture , young guys and gals , mixed couple , ladies and muzungo looking for adventures .....that is, but everything in music and joy ,thanks to security service. I was there in November several times taking with me friends never been in Kenya, they loved PapaRemo for quality of services and food . Compared last year some prices grow up , but this event is happening in some other places in Watamu.

The restaurant is known for its hygienic environment and beautifully decorated interior, creating a delightful dining experience.
Great pizza, great service and a good price.

We had 2 pizza’s here, one with anchovies and one with fish. Both were a bit too thick and dense and both way too salty. Service was good though and the place was clean. The owner (I think) came and started smoking and video-calling right next to our table, which was a bit intrusive. All in all an ok experience, but probably best to keep away from the fishy pizza’s.

Italian restaurant. Service was very good and fast, owner keeps serious attention to this which is appreciated. Carpaccio was really delicious, focaccia was awesome as well(they have the real stone oven there). Prawns cocktail was OK, but nothing special, easy meal, prawns are small, carpaccio was much more enjoyable. The tuna main course was good, 3 big chops of the fresh tuna, good and big meal. Pizza was taken to go, and actually it was nothing special, we tried much better in Kenya (other Italian restaurant). It supposed to be the seafood (tuna, shrimps, squid), however it was mostly tuna pieces there.. House wine (Italian) was very good, with a reasonable price. Overall, it is a nice Italian restaurant to spend a time for a quality dinner.

Spending the day at this spot was pure paradise. I spent hours stretched out on a net suspended over the water, with the ocean just beneath me and the breeze brushing over my skin — it honestly felt like time stopped. If you’re looking for a place to disconnect from the noise and just be, this is it. The view alone is enough to keep you there all day. With nothing but clear blue sea in front of you, the sound of the waves, and the warm sun above, it was the perfect escape. I didn’t even need much — just good vibes, the ocean, and a comfy spot to sink into. The team at the venue was fantastic. Friendly, attentive, and always nearby if you needed something — but never overbearing. They let you enjoy the space at your own pace, which made the experience feel even more personal and peaceful. I ordered some drinks and snacks throughout the day, and everything was fresh, chilled, and well-prepared. The menu wasn’t overcomplicated, just good food done right — which is exactly what you want when you’re spending the day in swimwear, lounging above the sea.

Such a cool place! We went twice during our 3 days in watamu. Fantastic views, chill vibe, great cocktails, friendly bar staff. There is a short food menu but it was all very tasty hot off the suspended grills.

good for the vibe and music, food nice but expensive (tourist prices in a tourist location). Great to check the sunset from the nets. Reserve in advance! Count 7k kes or more for a couple (dinner and drinks)

The food was a bit mid. The front desk is good but the servers leave a lot to be desired. I enjoyed the nets and the vibe of the place though. The food quality could be improved and I felt the price was not worth the quality or portions. Go there for the atmosphere and sunset views and vibe but maybe not food

This place is truly spectacular, with a wonderful view over the Creek where you can admire a breathtaking sunset. The food is delicious and the value for money is excellent. I highly recommend booking the “net” seats to be right in the front row and enjoy the sunset in total peace.

Probably the most overrated restaurant in the area, food quality and portions are so overpriced, self Service (although the place was empty and it’s not easy to get up since the all the sitting are on the floor) the hammock are not safe or comfortable at all. Sitting options are not comfortable Mango margarita tasted like water It’s not worth the hype about it

Over priced food. The portions are too small for the price paid. Octopus was quite basic, no flavour. The type of seating arrangement is not for everyone. Very uncomfortable.
