Catholic cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
The Cathedral of Évora, completed in 1746, is a prominent Roman Catholic cathedral offering scenic city views from its tower. It is one of the most significant cathedrals in Portugal and sits on the highest point of the city, making it a prominent feature of the cityscape.
The cathedral, museum, and the tower were all absolutely stunning!! If you’re student, there’s also a discount, not so big a difference, yet still better than nothing. The staff to give the tickets was super friendly and warm, I really appreciated their welcoming hospitality. For 4 euros, the view is so worth it. If you’re planning to visit Evora, you shouldn’t miss this Cathedral for sure!
Ekin — Google review
Everything about this cathedral exceeded my expectations. The striking architecture, remarkable history, and breathtaking views from the rooftop made the visit unforgettable. Climbing up is well worth it, the panorama over Évora is magnificent. A must-see when exploring the city.
Carlo D — Google review
A stunning piece of architecture and one of the highlights of my trip. This is a beautiful site that is well worth visiting and the opportunity to climb to the roof provides breathtaking views of the city. There is a small museum included in your entry ticket and this is a fantastic site that you can spend lots of time at and not get bored.
Matt H — Google review
If you visit the town of Era, Portugal, I recommend you visit the cathedral there for several reasons. First of all, we have seen many, many cathedrals in our travels, but this one is special. To be honest, my favorite part was walking around the roof of the cathedral, a unique experience! And of course, the altar and nave were beautiful, as you can see in the photos. Also amazing is that construction was started in the year 1280, still standing and in good condition.

Évora is a stunning town, and at its heart stands the magnificent Cathedral of Évora, perched on a hilltop like a crown jewel. The town itself feels like stepping back in time narrow cobbled streets, ancient walls, and a peaceful, almost magical medieval atmosphere that wraps around you the moment you arrive. The cathedral is an awe-inspiring structure, both inside and out. Its Gothic architecture is beautifully preserved, and climbing to the roof rewards you with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. From every angle, it’s easy to see how this cathedral became the focal point of such a historic town. It’s hard not to like all of it. The quiet charm, the rich history, and the way everything centers so naturally around the cathedral make Évora an unforgettable place to visit. Highly recommended for lovers of history, architecture, or anyone looking for a peaceful escape into Portugal’s past.
Duncan A — Google review
The cathedral offers stunning vistas of Evora and the plains of the Alentejo. The best views are on the rooftop accesible via the towers. We recommend visiting in the late afternoon (4PM or later) This way you can catch the golden hues of sun entering the cathedral and shining upon the high choir. Please honor the reverence of this space with silence. Photography allowed in all area except the treasure room with sacred relics.
Lauren P — Google review
Stunning cathedral with amazing views from the rooftop! Évora Cathedral is one of the most impressive monuments in the city — a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles. Climb to the top for a beautiful panoramic view of Évora and the Alentejo region. Peaceful, historic, and absolutely worth a visit!
Nishshanka M — Google review
Absolutely spectacular. Every part of the experience is fun. Getting to walk up the towers to walk on the roof and look out over the city. Walking through the cloister to see the sacred treasure collection (a MUST). Taking in the stunning beauty of the main cathedral. All of it fantastic. A highlight of our whole trip.

Historical place
Sights & Landmarks
The Roman Temple of Évora, located in the Conde Vila Flor square, is a remarkable ancient ruin built in the 1st century A.D. Initially dedicated to Emperor Augustus, it features impressive Corinthian pillars and stands as a symbol of Roman worship. Over the centuries, it served various purposes including as a mosque during the Moorish period and later as a market and slaughterhouse.
Free entry visit, it is actually located in the middle of a small square behind the famous Cathedral. No need to wait for taking a picture, no need to buy a ticket. There’s also viewpoint pretty closeby , so you can see Alentejo landscape.

A Remarkable Surprise in the Heart of Évora Our visit to the Roman Temple of Évora turned out to be one of the unexpected highlights of our trip. After exploring the site, we sat just south of the temple at a small nearby bar, enjoying a cold beer and a glass of wine in the sunshine a perfect setting to take in the view. The temple itself, with its beautiful surroundings and remarkably well-preserved columns, carries an incredible story. It’s hard to believe it’s still standing after centuries of history and change. The fact that it’s completely free to visit made it feel like even more of a hidden gem. Honestly, it felt like a bit of good luck that we stumbled upon such a special place in such a relaxed and charming way. Absolutely worth a visit if you find yourself in Évora you won’t be disappointed.

A stunning and beautiful piece of history, this is one of the iconic sites that can be found within the city and is one that you need to visit when here. It is really impressive and great to walk around and appreciate.

Beautiful and historic place in the heart of Évora! The Roman Temple — often called the Temple of Diana — is almost 2000 years old and one of the best-preserved ancient monuments in Portugal. Great spot for photos, especially at sunset! You can really feel the history here. Highly recommend visiting
Nissanka R — Google review
Probably my favourite place to visit in Evora. Iconic stop. Ancient Corinthian columns from the 1st century, right in the historic centre, free to see any time. You must visit it while in Evora
Ryan T — Google review
Had more fun driving in the tiny streets of Évora! Temple is great. Easily accessible and free to view/walk up to. No tickets needed - only if you want to go inside the church, and that’s up to you. Awesome to see something like this well preserved and still standing.

This seemed a little out of place walking through town to stumble across, but it was magnificent to see. We were fortunate enough to walk by at night with it all illuminated, very impressive! These are the interesting things you can find when travelling through old towns in Europe, makes it very unique.

Chapel
Sights & Landmarks
The Chapel of Bones in Évora is a small 16th-century chapel adorned with the bones and skulls of monks, creating a haunting yet thought-provoking atmosphere. Located near Giraldo Square, it stands next to the famous Igreja de San Francisco cathedral. The chapel's walls are decorated with motifs created from the remains of 5,000 individuals collected from overcrowded cemeteries at the time.
Amazing place. The only way to describe it in my opinion is where death meets art. I was surprised the energy was so great in here and I loved the energy in this place. There is a museum attached and a view points as well which are part of your ticket. 3 floors in total to check out. In my mind priced very cheap for just the chapel of bones by itself. This is worth a trip to Évora from Lisbon alone.
Luke L — Google review
A fascinating and eerie place in the heart of Évora! The Chapel of Bones is covered with thousands of real human bones and skulls — built by monks in the 16th century to remind people that life is short. It’s both spooky and beautiful at the same time. Definitely a must-see when visiting
Nissanka R — Google review
The chapel lined with bones is a truly unique experience that makes you reflect on the transience of everything. So many lives lived, so many stories that will never be told... The nativity museum is really interesting too, especially seeing how it was interpreted by different cultures. Would definitely recommend a visit!
Aleja R — Google review
Three stars is mainly due to the comparison with another bone chapel in Czech Republic! Sedlec Ossuary Kostnice Sedlec in Kutná Hora is way more unique, and much more interesting! So it’s a bit disappointed for me. Travel 2hrs from Lisbon to here just to see this places that I’ve always wanted to visited. The main church is amazing as other churches. The bone chapel sure has LOTS of bones, but it was simply piled on top of others. I was fortunate to visit Sedlec Ossuary Kostnice Sedlec and the bone chapel was way more beautiful decorated even though it was a much smaller church. This chapel is definitely not worth the trip if you had been to Sedlec Ossuary Kostnice Sedlec!
J C — Google review
I think it's a bit expensive for what it is. It's small, but really a unique chapel. The chapel is super crowded. Wasn't really interested in the Nativity Scene museum; the Chapel is what's up. I had Black Sabbath playing in my ear buds which was perfect so if you're a fan of metal or goth, this is for you.
Scott C — Google review
Very interesting ossuary. I paid in cash based on what is in other reviews to avoid frustration. 6 euro entry seemed a little much considering how small it is, but it's a tourist attraction so. The use of the bones is very interesting and used in nice patterns.
Toni S — Google review
Spooky? It’s a place to visit, if you’re in town. The history behind and its fast visit not boring, and you can see also Nativity scenes from all around the world showcasing different art styles which were lovely to see.
David M — Google review
This is a great place to see. It's not very big. Maybe take a few minutes there but you can stay as long as you want. Along with visiting the chapel, there is also 2 floor level to visit including a balcony that you can look out on the small square center. If you park in the square, parking fee is required with a max of 4 hrs. If you park outside the square, no fee for parking. After visiting the chapel, the church is connected right beside it. You can visit, no cost. Not much in Evora to do, however you can make it a day trip just by walking around and exploring. Lots of unique streets to explore. Restaurants are great and lots of places to buy souvenirs

Public university
Sights & Landmarks
The University of Évora, established in 1559, is one of Portugal's oldest educational institutions. Initially managed by the Society of Jesus, it was later repurposed as the National High School of Évora until its reinstatement as a university in 1979. Situated in Évora, Portugal, the university boasts a historic campus with Renaissance architecture and the renowned Cloister of Espirito Santo.
This is the second oldest University in Portugal. Founded by the Jesuits it is steeped in History and it still is going today. The class rooms are covered in beautiful tiles depicting the most varied science, literary and social themes. The layout is also beautiful, it has an immense atrium and it is laid out across several levels.

This is a must visit in Évora. Can be easily missed but it is totally worth it. The old areas, rooms, corridors and the intersecting history are amazing. It is a hidden gem and I strongly recommend having a guide to get the most of your visit. Allow at least 30 mins to explore.
Trachemysta — Google review
If it were just another palace or convent I would rate it a 4 star but being an university it's a 5 star in tradition, atmosphere and magnificent panels of storied tiles, as they are called (depicting scenes of common or historical events). The main yard is outstanding.
Jorge B — Google review
The azulejos tiles are spectacular. The whole place is a work of art. It's definitely worth the small price of admission. Make sure to allow enough time to absorb it all before they close at 5:00 p.m.
Thomas M — Google review
Nice and traditional buildings. The tiles are beautiful and found almost everywhere.
Gerardo G — Google review
We were scammed, had to pay 3 euros per person to enter the building, and then it turned out all the classrooms were occupied by courses or exams, so we couldn't see anything... Felt awkward walking around, as if we were not supposed to be there. No guidance at all.
Milena D — Google review
i am a student who wants to visit the university and I was being asked for 3 euros and the person was laughing at me with her colleagues when I was still in front of the door Isn’t it stupid ? And unfriendly!

Fialho is a classic, third-generation family-run tavern in Evora, Alentejo. The restaurant boasts a historic ambiance and an award-winning kitchen that excels at traditional dishes like broad beans with ham, wild asparagus with eggs, roast lamb or pork tenderloin with apple puree, and rabbit rice.
This restaurant is a must try. The service was impeccable, polite, very nice and fast. The food was absolutely gorgeous, tasty and very well prepared. The starters were absolutely delicious. The cod carpaccio with capers, the Serpa cheese, the roasted peppers and the octupus salad were divine. The main dishes were gorgeous, my roasted lamb shank was exquisite, as were all the remaining mains.

We had lunch at Fialho on a weekday. Very busy and fun environment. Our server was João and he’s great. We had the ham, pork cheek and lamb. All tasted excellent! The restaurant was so cute and nicely decorated. Recommend to book a table in advance.

Excellent restaurant with classic Portuguese cuisine. The lamb was truly outstanding. If you are a fan of salted codfish, go for it. I found it too oily for my gallbladder ☹️

Had a very nice lunch at this place that has been around for more than a century with the same chef for 30 + years. The table was set up for several starters including Iberian ham. Grilled octopus, bread, cheese with an apricot jam, faca beans mushrooms, cod carpaccio. We had a glass of white and a glass Of red from a local winery. And we ordered the veal steak and grilled pork both of which are delicacies from this Alentejo region

We got lucky with a table for 3 without a reservation. Exceptional dining experience with the family. The food was incredible from the appetizers to entrees to desserts. The American vintage music in the background was a nice touch, the waiters were extremely attentive and the restaurant got filled very quickly as it should.

An elegant place to enjoy dinner specializing in some of the Alentajo region’s fine cuisine. Service was excellent and formal, but not stuffy or pretentious. They do a great job creating an ambiance that is both traditional but also bright, clean and inviting. The meat and fish are absolutely excellent. My only regret was eating too much because I wanted to try it all!

5 stars from the beginning to the end!! Paulo and Nuno were amazing. If you want to eat your best pork loin of your life, just order the "Porco Preto" It was so juicy and tender that it doesn't look like a pork at all. Another must to is a Cod Carpaccio.

Taberna Típica Quarta-feira, also known as the Typical Wednesday Tavern, is a humble and wacky-named restaurant located in Evora. This family-run tavern offers classic local dishes such as seafood, meat specialties, and desserts served alongside wine. The cozy establishment has a set menu that includes all-you-can-eat style servings of traditional Alentejan dishes cooked for hours in their own juices.
One of the top meals we have had since moving to Portugal three years ago. The food was delicious and plenty of it!!! The staff was amazing-super friendly, excellent service and informative about the local dishes. I highly recommend Taberna Tipica Quarta-Feira. The only pictures we have are from the start of our meal and the end-we were too busy enjoying ourselves to take pictures!!!

GREAT food: the wine, appetizers, salad, main dish, desserts (everything was tasty and unique). Always plan ahead (make a reservation). Wonderful staff and great atmosphere…. Best meal of the trip (so far). 10/10 Top notch! (PS Thank you for the restaurant suggestions in Lagos!)
Richard W — Google review
Fantastic dinner, a hidden pearl in Evora. When we arrived in Evora during our trip we searched for something authentic, and we found this place almost hidden in the streets of the city. From the outside you wouldn't think that this is a fantastic restaurant: the only thing that gives it away is the sign out of the door and the numerous awards they display. In this family-driven place there is no menu: the chef and his son (and a couple of other people) gave us a warm welcome and explained that in their Taberna they cook like their grandparents used to. You start with some exceptional pork cold cuts, bacon-wrapped dates, a fresh mixed salad and a cheese/pumpkin pastry out of this world. Then they gave us a mysterious little sandwich (and I will not spoil the surprise for you) which was insanely good and flavorful. After all these entrees the real dinner starts: oxtail risotto, Portuguese codfish, beef neck braised for hours in red wine and homemade potato chips and pumpkin with onions. To top it all off, the desserts were astonishing: walnuts cake, cheese flan, caipirinha ice cream and a typical Portuguese dessert made with egg yolk, sugar and cinnamon. Every flavour was intense, every dish was clearly made with love and experience. The service was exceptionally good, just like the food they gave us; every dish was explained with cooking details and even some history behind the recipe. The price was insane: the dinner was absolutely underpriced for how much we ate and for the quality of the experience. If they told me this was a Michelin-starred restaurant, I would absolutely believe it. The only thing you need to remember is that you need to book a table in advance because the restaurant is very small, but if you come to Evora you MUST eat here. They accept every major credit card. Consigliatissimo.
Davide P — Google review
We would recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Portugal!! Our experience here was one of the highlights of our trip. From the incredible hospitality to some of the most unique and delicious food we have ever had; it was truly a one of a kind experience. Manuel, one of the owners, welcomed us in and made us feel like we were dining in his own home. We tried so many new dishes that were all delicious and we raved about how every bite was perfect. We hope to return to this restaurant whenever we visit Portugal again and our memory of our experience here will forever be one of our favorites from our family trip.

One of the greatest surprises of our trip! An original way to explore regional food in a hospitable and nice way. Food was delicious and service was very pleasant. They also take time for a small chat where Impressions can be exchanged and we got information about Portuguese traditional cuisine. Absolutely lovely!

Taberna Típica Quarta-feira is an unforgettable dining experience. I’ve visited twice, the second time i visited Évora just to eat here again. The place is small with only a handful of tables—reservations are a must. There’s no menu—they simply cook what’s in season and serve a series of beautifully prepared unique courses, each full of local flavor and charm. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the staff are incredibly friendly.
Wade H — Google review
This was hands down one of the best restaurant experiences I have had in years! From the very beginning, we were welcomed by Manuel who took care of us the rest of the evening, making us feel like part of his family and welcoming us into the restaurant. The restaurant has one seating a day for each lunch and dinner, and the food is absolutely spectacular. There is no menu: every table is severed the same thing, and throughout the course of the evening, we counted ~25 different items that came to our table, served family style in about 3 courses. It changes each day with what is seasonal, and we loved every bite. The wines were fantastic and all local, many of them made specifically for the restaurant. At the end of the meal, Manuel overhead me lamenting how much I loved the dessert flatware (which was shaped like shovels) and even gave me a set to go home with, a beyond kind touch to an already fantastic evening. We feel extremely lucky to have gotten the reservation and will absolutely be back anytime we are near Évora. I know our family will remember this spot for years to come! You should absolutely visit if you have the chance

In the charming town of Evora, Portugal, lies Dom Joaquim, a refined dining destination that expertly blends traditional Alentejo cuisine with innovative culinary techniques. Despite its initial old-fashioned appearance, the restaurant surprises visitors with its sophisticated ambiance and unique blend of classic and contemporary elements.
Good traditional restaurant within the walls of Évora. The pork cheek dish is amazing and a must try here. Other dishes like the octopus and some appetizers are also nice but nothing beats the pork cheeks. Very good wine options and also several typical desserts worth tasting. Reservations are strongly recommended and they accept credit card payments. The staff was great

Our hotel picked this place for us, so I didn't read any reviews before going. My wife says that the poor service was mentioned by others. There is no hostess so we waited for several minutes for someone to walk to the front and to be seated. Our waiter was very friendly, but as the restaurant got busy he disappeared. Our appetizer of the fantastic sausages and turnip greens was forgotten, leaving us sit for half an hour watching others who came after enjoy their food. By then our €20 half-bottle of wine was almost gone and dinner was still to come. Her pork cheeks were very tender, but flavor was lacking compared to others from the night before. They were very boring, actually. I had an expertly prepared octopus, both tender and delicious. Desserts were an option, but most things were unfamiliar and the young woman who tried to take our order was not able to help much in English so we skipped it. This is also only the second restaurant in Portugal that then asked for a tip. Perhaps as Americans we have a reputation for tipping, but they don't understand why we do it. Overall, lots of potential but poor follow through.

This restaurant was given high praise by the Rick Steves guidebook as being where he eats when he visits Évora. We went for lunch and loved our meal! Our waiter Andre (young man with glasses), patiently explained the menu specials which were only printed in Portuguese and provided the best service. The roast lamb was particularly outstanding.

An absolutely lovely place. The same price range as all the bad tourist reataurants in town (the type with washed out pictures on the meny), yet at Dom Joaquim you get white table cloths, gourmet food, an extensive wine list and excellent, knowlegable and attentive waiters. They serve traditional portuguese dishes and also have great vegetarian options. A great experience we would highly recommend to anyone!

We had a fantastic dinner at Dom Joaquim in Évora. From start to finish everything was excellent — the food, the service, the ambiance — truly a memorable evening. I ordered the Borrego Assado no Forno (oven-roasted Alentejo lamb), and it was superb: tender, perfectly seasoned with olive oil, garlic, bay leaves and rosemary, and the flavors were beautifully balanced. My girlfriend had the pork cheek roasted in red wine), which literally melted in her mouth and had a rich, deep flavor without being heavy. Some additional highlights: the waiter was friendly and attentive, the wine suggestions were spot on, and the dessert was a great way to end the meal (we couldn’t resist trying something local and sweet). Highly recommend Dom Joaquim to anyone in Évora looking for true Alentejo cuisine with quality, flavor, and heart. Will definitely return.

Small, simple, but unbelievably good restaurant. Service was amazing, food was delicious. We didn’t try tasting, we just shared a few starters and a few main dishes. Our Rick Steve’s Tour Guide recommended this location. We also saw it in the Michelin Guide App. I’m so glad I made a reservation and took my wife to celebrate her birthday. The Tasting Menu was a great experience for our taste buds and wish had more time in Evora to come eat here again. So many great details that my wife loved, from the custom made sangria to the home made cookies presented in a little box. We loved the chef coming out to wish my wife a happy birthday. This is a well run small family restaurant and truly wish them continual success.

We were so lucky to enjoy lunch at Origins during our visit to Evora. We enjoyed incredible service and an amazing meal including bread, scallops with a carrot puree I’m now obsessed with and a fish dish that was out of this world. The carrot cake to finish was the chef’s choice and perfect. We didn’t even realize this was a Michelin rated restaurant, but it’s the best of the three we visited while in Portugal. If you’re anywhere near Evora, be sure to enjoy a meal at Origins.

Their warmth and professionalism made the evening even more memorable. From the first bite to the last sip, everything was flawless. If you’re looking for an extraordinary fine dining experience in Évora, this is a must-visit. I would absolutely return and highly recommend it to anyone seeking a refined and unforgettable meal.

The chef’s tasting was a culinary adventure. One of the best meals I’ve had in all of Portugal. The staff was extremely attentive and the chef extraordinarily talented. Highly recommend!

Recommended by a local. Didn't disappoint us. We tried the tasting menu Moments 7 course dinner. The staff explained in details every dishes. They are using in season fresh ingredients and change menu accordingly. You won't know what you will get until they serve you. Just one warning, the portion can be a lot compared to usual fine dining. Definitely a restaurant that worth revisit.

Exceptional food with some really surprising flavors. The tempura vegetables were unbelievable. The lamb empanadas were outstanding, but the real star is the chimichurri sauce that comes with it. On the mains, the ravioli was perfect. The migas might be my favorite dish in Portugal. You just save room for the soufflé dessert. It’s pretty epic. The service was top-notch. A very impressive restaurant.

We’ve been going to Cavalariça Comporta since ‘17 and have been to the Evora location 3-4x. Yday we had lunch in Evora on a boiling hot day and didn’t want a big meal. Cavalariça was spot on with a lighter menu than we expected with great summer dishes (e.g., lettuce wrap with veggies, beetroot salad and a dessert of citrus / honey / chamomile ice cream). Gr8 service and very reasonable prices for the quality of the food. Obrigado Team Cavalariça👏🏻

We had a very nice lunch here in October 2025. Place was recommended by our hotel, and it cannot be more conveniently located. The menu is more modern than some, which was a nice change of pace. Highly recommended.

5-star experience from the amazing staff and service, to the vibe, and incredible food. They use local, seasonal, organic ingredients and you can taste the thoughtfulness in every dish. The menu is creative, fun, and truly delicious, pairing flavors and techniques from around the world. Portions were appropriate and well priced for the quality. Can’t recommend enough.
