The Chapel of Bones in Évora is a small 16th-century chapel adorned with the bones and skulls of monks, creating a haunting yet thought-provoking atmosphere. Located near Giraldo Square, it stands next to the famous Igreja de San Francisco cathedral. The chapel's walls are decorated with motifs created from the remains of 5,000 individuals collected from overcrowded cemeteries at the time.
Amazing place. The only way to describe it in my opinion is where death meets art. I was surprised the energy was so great in here and I loved the energy in this place. There is a museum attached and a view points as well which are part of your ticket. 3 floors in total to check out. In my mind priced very cheap for just the chapel of bones by itself. This is worth a trip to Évora from Lisbon alone.
Luke L — Google review
A fascinating and eerie place in the heart of Évora! The Chapel of Bones is covered with thousands of real human bones and skulls — built by monks in the 16th century to remind people that life is short. It’s both spooky and beautiful at the same time. Definitely a must-see when visiting
Nissanka R — Google review
The chapel lined with bones is a truly unique experience that makes you reflect on the transience of everything. So many lives lived, so many stories that will never be told... The nativity museum is really interesting too, especially seeing how it was interpreted by different cultures. Would definitely recommend a visit!
Aleja R — Google review
I think it's a bit expensive for what it is. It's small, but really a unique chapel. The chapel is super crowded. Wasn't really interested in the Nativity Scene museum; the Chapel is what's up. I had Black Sabbath playing in my ear buds which was perfect so if you're a fan of metal or goth, this is for you.
Scott C — Google review
Very interesting ossuary. I paid in cash based on what is in other reviews to avoid frustration. 6 euro entry seemed a little much considering how small it is, but it's a tourist attraction so. The use of the bones is very interesting and used in nice patterns.
Toni S — Google review
Small chapel with all the walls covered with human bones, skulls and different parts. There is also a mummy. There is also a small part upstairs with a balcony for some views. While it is indeed impressive and something unique, in my opinion it is overpriced (6€ for 20-min visit) for the tiny room where the bones are. Everything else just feels like a filler.
Trachemysta — Google review
Spooky? It’s a place to visit, if you’re in town. The history behind and its fast visit not boring, and you can see also Nativity scenes from all around the world showcasing different art styles which were lovely to see.
David M — Google review
This is a great place to see. It's not very big. Maybe take a few minutes there but you can stay as long as you want. Along with visiting the chapel, there is also 2 floor level to visit including a balcony that you can look out on the small square center. If you park in the square, parking fee is required with a max of 4 hrs. If you park outside the square, no fee for parking. After visiting the chapel, the church is connected right beside it. You can visit, no cost. Not much in Evora to do, however you can make it a day trip just by walking around and exploring. Lots of unique streets to explore. Restaurants are great and lots of places to buy souvenirs

The Roman Temple of Évora, located in the Conde Vila Flor square, is a remarkable ancient ruin built in the 1st century A.D. Initially dedicated to Emperor Augustus, it features impressive Corinthian pillars and stands as a symbol of Roman worship. Over the centuries, it served various purposes including as a mosque during the Moorish period and later as a market and slaughterhouse.
Free entry visit, it is actually located in the middle of a small square behind the famous Cathedral. No need to wait for taking a picture, no need to buy a ticket. There’s also viewpoint pretty closeby , so you can see Alentejo landscape.

A Remarkable Surprise in the Heart of Évora Our visit to the Roman Temple of Évora turned out to be one of the unexpected highlights of our trip. After exploring the site, we sat just south of the temple at a small nearby bar, enjoying a cold beer and a glass of wine in the sunshine a perfect setting to take in the view. The temple itself, with its beautiful surroundings and remarkably well-preserved columns, carries an incredible story. It’s hard to believe it’s still standing after centuries of history and change. The fact that it’s completely free to visit made it feel like even more of a hidden gem. Honestly, it felt like a bit of good luck that we stumbled upon such a special place in such a relaxed and charming way. Absolutely worth a visit if you find yourself in Évora you won’t be disappointed.
Duncan A — Google review
A stunning and beautiful piece of history, this is one of the iconic sites that can be found within the city and is one that you need to visit when here. It is really impressive and great to walk around and appreciate.

Beautiful and historic place in the heart of Évora! The Roman Temple — often called the Temple of Diana — is almost 2000 years old and one of the best-preserved ancient monuments in Portugal. Great spot for photos, especially at sunset! You can really feel the history here. Highly recommend visiting
Nissanka R — Google review
Probably my favourite place to visit in Evora. Iconic stop. Ancient Corinthian columns from the 1st century, right in the historic centre, free to see any time. You must visit it while in Evora
Ryan T — Google review
Had more fun driving in the tiny streets of Évora! Temple is great. Easily accessible and free to view/walk up to. No tickets needed - only if you want to go inside the church, and that’s up to you. Awesome to see something like this well preserved and still standing.
James A — Google review
This seemed a little out of place walking through town to stumble across, but it was magnificent to see. We were fortunate enough to walk by at night with it all illuminated, very impressive! These are the interesting things you can find when travelling through old towns in Europe, makes it very unique.

Cathedral
Catholic church
The Cathedral of Évora, completed in 1746, is a prominent Roman Catholic cathedral offering scenic city views from its tower. It is one of the most significant cathedrals in Portugal and sits on the highest point of the city, making it a prominent feature of the cityscape.
The cathedral, museum, and the tower were all absolutely stunning!! If you’re student, there’s also a discount, not so big a difference, yet still better than nothing. The staff to give the tickets was super friendly and warm, I really appreciated their welcoming hospitality. For 4 euros, the view is so worth it. If you’re planning to visit Evora, you shouldn’t miss this Cathedral for sure!
Ekin — Google review
Everything about this cathedral exceeded my expectations. The striking architecture, remarkable history, and breathtaking views from the rooftop made the visit unforgettable. Climbing up is well worth it, the panorama over Évora is magnificent. A must-see when exploring the city.
Carlo D — Google review
A stunning piece of architecture and one of the highlights of my trip. This is a beautiful site that is well worth visiting and the opportunity to climb to the roof provides breathtaking views of the city. There is a small museum included in your entry ticket and this is a fantastic site that you can spend lots of time at and not get bored.
Matt H — Google review
If you visit the town of Era, Portugal, I recommend you visit the cathedral there for several reasons. First of all, we have seen many, many cathedrals in our travels, but this one is special. To be honest, my favorite part was walking around the roof of the cathedral, a unique experience! And of course, the altar and nave were beautiful, as you can see in the photos. Also amazing is that construction was started in the year 1280, still standing and in good condition.
Mary T — Google review
Évora is a stunning town, and at its heart stands the magnificent Cathedral of Évora, perched on a hilltop like a crown jewel. The town itself feels like stepping back in time narrow cobbled streets, ancient walls, and a peaceful, almost magical medieval atmosphere that wraps around you the moment you arrive. The cathedral is an awe-inspiring structure, both inside and out. Its Gothic architecture is beautifully preserved, and climbing to the roof rewards you with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. From every angle, it’s easy to see how this cathedral became the focal point of such a historic town. It’s hard not to like all of it. The quiet charm, the rich history, and the way everything centers so naturally around the cathedral make Évora an unforgettable place to visit. Highly recommended for lovers of history, architecture, or anyone looking for a peaceful escape into Portugal’s past.
Duncan A — Google review
The cathedral offers stunning vistas of Evora and the plains of the Alentejo. The best views are on the rooftop accesible via the towers. We recommend visiting in the late afternoon (4PM or later) This way you can catch the golden hues of sun entering the cathedral and shining upon the high choir. Please honor the reverence of this space with silence. Photography allowed in all area except the treasure room with sacred relics.
Lauren P — Google review
Stunning cathedral with amazing views from the rooftop! Évora Cathedral is one of the most impressive monuments in the city — a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles. Climb to the top for a beautiful panoramic view of Évora and the Alentejo region. Peaceful, historic, and absolutely worth a visit!

Located just west of Evora near Guadalupe, the Almendres Cromlech, also known as Cromleque dos Almendres, is a Neolithic-era monument dating back over 6,000 years. It is the largest megalithic site on the Iberian Peninsula and predates Stonehenge in England.
Great place to visit, educational posts available along the road near the village. A great hike through cork oak forest is a part of unique experience way in and out of the significant prehistoric sites. Go there in the early morning or before sunset to have cool photos and cool weather
L. S — Google review
Loved it here. It was definitely worth the drive on the rough road to get here. Loved the energy. Such a cool space that many wouldn’t enjoy but big energy space and a lot of history.
Luke L — Google review
We visited this site: the walk is quite long since it’s best to leave the car at a distance. The road to get there is in very poor condition, so you really need to drive slowly to avoid damaging the car. The archaeological site itself is nice – there’s nothing around it, but it’s still an interesting place to visit.
Alessia L — Google review
From the top car park its only a short walk. A much much longer walk from the other lay by area. Easy to misunderstand which one your going to look at due to the poor information. The stones themselves definitely need more information to tell the story behind it. The road up on small dirt bikes was excellent fun but cars need to take it steady.
Michael G — Google review
Great piece of history! The drive is tricky though. You will need a decent car there are a lot of potholes! Worth the visit though!
A V — Google review
Stones from 5,000 B.C. It's a climb up a very narrow bumpy road from the interpretive center, biking it was probably easier than driving. The stones are amazing and there are views across the plains all the way to Evora in the distance.
Tim D — Google review
You can access to this mystic place by car , of course the road is not a good one but with cautious driving you will get there. I call it a Portuguese Stonehenge , I believe it is worth a visit . There’s free parking lot and lots of cork fields .
Niloofar B — Google review
Road washed out, so is closed off further back from the usual car park. The extra walk thru cork forests into the stones puts you in the right frame of mind though. Beautiful site. So many stones. Worth the walk and rough dirt road.

The Agua de Prata Aqueduct, also known as the Evora aqueduct, is a stunning stone structure designed by Francisco de Arruda in the 1530s. Extending for nearly 9 kilometers through various parts of the city's historic center, this well-preserved water canal offers a picturesque path alongside it. The aqueduct showcases an elegant blend of old and new, with its rough stone construction seamlessly integrated into the modern town.
Visited August 2024 Always interesting to see the Aqueducts through out Europe...they are a testament to the engineering strength of those who came before us! Massive structures requiring massive energy to put in place. Always Impressive
Kirk B — Google review
It was okay. Nice to see it and walk in to main area. See houses and street built in between. Arch gets smarter n smarter as u go up n up
Orlando M — Google review
During a quick evening walk, we stopped by the Água de Prata Aqueduct, and it was truly an impressive sight. Unlike many famous aqueducts, this one wasn’t built by the Romans but dates back to medieval times around the 1530’s if I’m not mistaken. It’s a remarkable piece of engineering that still stands proudly, stretching across the landscape with a quiet elegance. While it doesn’t appear to be lit up at night (which is a bit of a shame), it’s absolutely worth walking past, especially to appreciate its scale and historical significance. Even with just a short visit, it left a strong impression simple, grand, and a wonderful reminder of human ingenuity.
Duncan A — Google review
Fine looking aqueduct nothing really special compared to other examples through Europe. More impressive things to see in the town but it is a quick stop right outside the walls and you probably have to drive under it anyway to get to the rest of town. The way houses built into the arches inside the wall is a little cool
Pratul M — Google review
It is a really old aqueduct, built back in the 16th century, over 480 years ago! The aqueduct brought water to the city from springs about 18 kilometers away. Part of this structure runs underground, and part is visible as large stone arches, between which houses and shops were later built. This place is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is one of the most famous attractions in Évora. If you come to Portugal, you should definitely visit this amazing historical place! 💧🇵🇹
Nissanka R — Google review
This is a very cool structure running through the town. It's hundreds of years old and as it runs right through the centre of town, it has been incorporated into many of the houses and shops, rather than it being torn down. Definitely an amazing site to take in as you explore the town.
Jeff E — Google review
These aqueducts are an iconic piece of history and scenery for Evora and they are a fantastic site to visit. They provide a stunning piece of history and photographic opportunities.
Matt H — Google review
Ancient Roman aqueduct in Evora that short walk from the Roman temple ruins. Say 10 mins walk. No need to buy tickets. Quite unique to see as it was built into the houses and residential areas. Worthy a visit. Cobble stones pavement areas. Be careful as you walk.

Nestled within the historic walls of Évora, the Cadaval Palace, or Palacio dos Duques de Cadaval, is a stunning 14th-century gem that offers visitors a glimpse into Portugal's rich heritage. Dominated by the striking Torre das Cinco Quinas (Five Corners Tower), this palace boasts an enchanting Jardim do Paço (Palace Garden) where you can unwind amidst lush greenery.
It was wonderful! The Yves Saint Laurent ‘Marrakech Opened My Eyes To Color’ was stunning, a must-see when in Évora!
Turi G — Google review
The church is cool but the palace is pretty sparse, if they sold separate tickets it would be nice but as is, I don’t think it’s worth the price of admission.
Kristen W — Google review
Palácio dos Duques de Cadaval Type: palace, museum Price: 6 EUR (palace + Igreja de São João Evangelista) Time spent: 40 min WC: available Path for disabled: not available for the Palace Parking: available, small Bike parking: not available Entrance: follow the picture - enter from the main street, turn right and go upstairs, go to the location of a restaurant, but on the 2nd floor, turn left Currently there is a modern art exhibition in the museum. There you can understand how good your children's paintings are.

The church is pretty, the palace itself is just an old house with a repository of old stuff. The walls and ceiling could use a much needed lift and humidity is taking its toll.

Giraldo Square Fountain is located in the central district and faces the basilica of St. Andrew. It was named after Giraldo the Fearless, who defeated the Moors in 1165 and became the governor of Evora. The square used to be a Roman market and was later renamed in his honor. The fountain originally sourced water from an aqueduct for public use in ancient times.
The famous square in Evora . The fountain is so beautiful and in full working order . It was built in 1570 . It has 8 spouts representing the 8 roads leading out of the square! A beautiful spot with no tickets needed and no waits to see it .
Yvonne G — Google review
A cute small square in Evora. It felt like the main square in town. Many places to eat or drink something. I would recommend to drink around the Square, yet pricing of the restaurants nearby did not seem fair, honestly. You can enjoy the square, visit the church, and continue your way to the famous Cathedral.
Ekin — Google review
We stopped by Praça do Giraldo in Évora on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. The square was bathed in full sunshine, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that made us want to linger. Tables and chairs were scattered around the square, so we grabbed a small drink and just sat back to take it all in the historic surroundings, the gentle buzz of people passing through, and the elegant Geraldo Fountain right at the center. It’s a great place to pause and enjoy the rhythm of the town. Highly recommended for a leisurely stop, whether you’re sightseeing or just looking to soak up the local atmosphere in a beautiful setting. A lovely moment in Évora.

The Clock Museum - Pole Évora is a delightful destination for anyone fascinated by the art of timekeeping. This charming museum showcases an impressive array of vintage grandfather clocks, watches, and various timepieces that span centuries. Visitors can explore hundreds of meticulously collected items that tell the story of horology through the ages. The museum's rich history is complemented by its knowledgeable staff, who are eager to share insights about each piece in their collection.
Small museum but a trove of interesting watches that capture the times. The lady who worked there was very knowledgeable and friendly, watch-making is in her family. Not only did she explain the mechanics of the clocks and watches very well, but also had trivia for us on the social conventions about clocks and watches. Highly recommend asking the questions you've always had about timekeeping but didn't know who to ask :) We also saw locals come in to get their watch repaired. There are some models for sale in the shop section. We were a curious bunch and walked away enriched with knowledge.

If you’re looking for an extraordinary fine dining experience in Évora, this is a must-visit. I would absolutely return and highly recommend it to anyone seeking a refined and unforgettable meal.

The chef’s tasting was a culinary adventure. One of the best meals I’ve had in all of Portugal. The staff was extremely attentive and the chef extraordinarily talented. Highly recommend!

Recommended by a local. Didn't disappoint us. We tried the tasting menu Moments 7 course dinner. The staff explained in details every dishes. They are using in season fresh ingredients and change menu accordingly. You won't know what you will get until they serve you. Just one warning, the portion can be a lot compared to usual fine dining. Definitely a restaurant that worth revisit.

Exceptional food with some really surprising flavors. The tempura vegetables were unbelievable. The lamb empanadas were outstanding, but the real star is the chimichurri sauce that comes with it. On the mains, the ravioli was perfect. The migas might be my favorite dish in Portugal. You just save room for the soufflé dessert. It’s pretty epic. The service was top-notch. A very impressive restaurant.

We’ve been going to Cavalariça Comporta since ‘17 and have been to the Evora location 3-4x. Yday we had lunch in Evora on a boiling hot day and didn’t want a big meal. Cavalariça was spot on with a lighter menu than we expected with great summer dishes (e.g., lettuce wrap with veggies, beetroot salad and a dessert of citrus / honey / chamomile ice cream). Gr8 service and very reasonable prices for the quality of the food. Obrigado Team Cavalariça👏🏻

We had a very nice lunch here in October 2025. Place was recommended by our hotel, and it cannot be more conveniently located. The menu is more modern than some, which was a nice change of pace. Highly recommended.

Art Museums
MADE, also known as the Museum of Crafts and Design, is a small museum located near the Chapel of Bones. Established in 2011, it showcases handcrafts and artworks from the local Alentejo area. The museum offers an interesting collection of relics, including items like an electric whisk from 2015. Visitors can explore well-organized exhibits and even purchase handcrafted souvenirs at the on-site shop.
It is a very small museum in the vicinity of the Chapel of Bones. It was founded recently in 2011 and presents handcrafts and artworks of mainly the local Alentejo area. It worth a quick visit as there are some interesting handcrafts there, it is not crowded at all and the entrance fee is only 2 euros normal ticket and 1 euro for students and seniors. And there is a shop at the end where you can buy similar handcrafts as a souvenir.

Stunning collection of relics. I particularly enjoyed the electric whisk circa 2015. It's fascinating to imagine how ancient civilizations whisked their foodstuffs.

Pastelaria Conventual Pão de Rala is a renowned bakery known for its signature pastry, pao de rala, which features a luscious filling of pumpkin, almond, and egg yolk. The establishment has a rich history, with Dona Ercilia mastering the art of pastry-making from a young age. In addition to pao de rala, the bakery offers other delectable treats like Nuns Kisses and curd cheese tarts.
Fantastic bakery a bit south of the city centre. When we arrived for an afternoon snack there was nobody, we ordered and received the sweets swiftly. The sweets are amazing and their mel e noz is mouth watering and so delicious. They are a family business. Inside there are not many places to sit just 6 tables but it makes the place very cute on its own. They prefer that you pay in cash.

Igreja e Mosteiro de São Francisco is a Gothic cathedral in Evora, built in honor of St. Francis during the reign of Manuel I. Adjacent to the cathedral is the famous Chapel of Bones, constructed from human skulls and bones collected from overcrowded cemeteries. The chapel's walls are adorned with motifs and its white brick ceiling features death-themed frescoes.
Beautiful church in Evora. Highly recommend visiting. The history is amazing. Worth using a guide to learn more as you visit. Free to enter.

This beautiful small church is attached to the chapel of bones. The outside the beautiful and so is the inside. It's a great stop as your're exploring the surrounding area and the best part is, it's free. It's not very busy and depending on when you get there, you could be the only one in the church

A church with a stunning indoor design!! The azulejos on the walls, the black and white stones through the roof, and the characteristic structure of the roof lines. It was totally worthy to visit and no entrance fee was needed. Unlike some churches in Evora, it was open on Sunday. I definitely recommend to visit.

A really nice church with some stunning details inside. This is a nice spot to visit when in the area.
Matt H — Google review
This is a beautiful church, with lots to see. Perhaps most well known is the Chapel of Bones, but ironically, it was the place where my family and I spent the least amount of time. It's fascinating, but only a single room. So in some ways, it was a bit disappointing. However, upstairs there is a huge collection of nativity scenes from all around the world. There are hundreds of them, and it was absolutely amazing to see the different styles and interpretations of nativity scenes from different cultures. I eventually got tired, but my daughter would have easily spent hours looking at them all. I had to shuffle her along. There is also a very small museum with paintings and other artifacts to view. This is a great place to spend an afternoon. I came wanting to see the Chapel of Bones, not knowing any of the other things that were here, but I enjoyed everything else immensely. The church itself is free to visit, while entering the Chapel of Bones requires the purchase of a ticket, which also includes seeing the nativity scenes and the museum. It's very reasonably priced and well worth it.

Tua Madre is a restaurant in Evora that offers a unique dining experience. The menu features dishes like Carbonara and Diafragma de novilho, as well as the must-try Brioche de pancetta. Guests can also opt for a tasting menu to sample various recommendations. The owner's Italian heritage influences the cuisine, combining Italian techniques with locally-sourced Portuguese ingredients. The cozy ambiance and attentive service make it a standout dining destination in the Alentejo region.
We got a table without a reservation on a Friday night, arrived right when they opened at 7. The pasta was amazing, don’t miss the asparagus starter if it is available — it seems the menu changes regularly to reflect what is in season. The carbonara was so rich, great to share. Portions might look small but perfect to share 3-4 dishes as intended.
Samantha C — Google review
Good food with a mix of Italian and Portuguese cuisine, based on locally sourced ingredients. The portions are small, but the waiter explained the concept at the beginning, letting us know that the dishes are meant to be shared. So we weren’t surprised. Everything was tasty, both the food and the wine. We were lucky to get a table without reservation, however it’s better to reserve in advance. The place is small and we saw some people who couldn’t get in without reservation.
Darya M — Google review
The menu changes based on the available ingredients. Everything was delicious. The service was wonderful. The food comes out as it is completed and is meant to share. We ordered the asparagus, the aged black pork, the cheese and chard pasta in sage butter and the carbonara. We had a delicious chocolate mouse with salt and olive oil. I would eat that whole meal again once a week.
Eric P — Google review
Menu based on seasonal products and meant to share, so portions are small. The flavour is amazing, we tried almost everything that was available. The service was a bit slow. The inside is very small, so only option was outside in a very warm summer night, not the best… nevertheless, a great culinary experience
Inês S — Google review
A great spot to enjoy dinner in one of Évora’s charming alleyways. We had tuna tartare, steak tartare, carbonara pasta and agnolotti pasta. Everything was fresh and delicious. The carbonara, in particular, was exploding with flavor and the pork was crispy as opposed to the rubbery texture you can sometimes find with that dish. They also had some great kombucha offerings that were not sweet, which I really appreciated. Absolutely worth a visit.

Do Largo Évora is a charming and delightful spot offering a variety of delicious and freshly made food options. The menu includes vegan-friendly dishes like avocado toast without egg, deconstructed burger with hummus and greens, and mouthwatering vegan banana bread. For non-vegan options, there are choices like pork with Gijon mustard and local mushrooms, served with a generous bread basket for starters. The atmosphere exudes a hipster vibe in a comfortable setting.
This place is incredible! The service is great and the food is even better! I am vegan and they made it really easy to eat well. The avocado toast sans egg and the vegan deconstructed burger with hummus and greens were out of this world. The vegan banana bread was also to die for! (I also saw they had some sort of vegetable medley, but didn’t get a chance to try it.) Although these menu items sound basic, the chef has some kind of magic and makes simple, healthy ingredients taste really delicious. I literally ate here every day during my stay in Evora and highly recommend you do the same! The staff is wonderful and the outdoor seating in spring is truly delightful under the trees.

The cafe and especially the seating in the courtyard under the trees is beautiful. A pity the staff didn’t know how to prepare a decent cortado and cappuccino. The food ist tasty, but the portions too small and it took more than 40 minutes to prepare it.

Nice place for lunch. They now have a lunch menu with vegetarian, meat and fish options. Had a pork (secretos) with gijon mustard and local mushrooms and it was absolutely great. The portion was good but there wasn’t sides for it - had a big bread basket with olive oil for starters. Vibe is hipster in a medium square - it wasn’t busy but enough people to feel comfortable. Had to taste deserts as well and they are all done in house. The cheesecake was very tasty and with a decent portion. Would definitely be back for breakfast as their toasts and pancakes looked great.

Easily the best lunch of our holiday (and we had quite a few very good lunches). The dried fish platter, grilled mackerel with mango and the grilled peaches with cottage cheese were amazing. For drinks we had coffee and a really good watermelon shake.

This is the cutest and most lovely place with wonderful, healthy and freshly made food choices and refreshing beverages. The vegetarian steak was delicious. It consisted of hummus and vegetables with amazing spices. The salad and chips served with it were delicious as well. The breakfast menu looked yummy and they offer various coffee drinks. My cappacino was good though I would've liked a slight bit of sweetener and cinnamon added in. The view at the window is so sweet and the outdoor seating is nice as well. The service was pleasant.

Alto de São Bento, just a short drive from Evora's old town, is a popular viewpoint offering stunning panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. Locals often visit for picnics or to enjoy the sunset in a relaxed atmosphere. The area also features little white windmills and a Museological Center dedicated to preserving natural and cultural heritage. It's an ideal spot for a leisurely walk with historical information available on-site.
Good view point to see Évora. You can clearly see the churches, but what is most impressive is that you can see the aqua dust stretching over a few kilometers. Besides this there are also some nice old windmills and there is a azuleus tile explanation of the view. Close to the view point there is a parking space for cars. It was extremely calm when we visited.

Located in the old Moorish quarter of Evora, Botequim da Mouraria is a tiny restaurant with just nine counter seats and no reservations. Run by Chef Domingos Canelas and his wife Florbela, this family-run tavern has been serving up elaborate Alentejan dishes for nearly 80 years.
Spectacular! It’s a dining experience you will love and never forget. Talented husband and wife team serve amazing food in a tiny restaurant with only ten seats. Open weekdays at 12:30p and there are no reservations so just line up outside restaurant and pray you get one of the ten seats. I write this in English to reach the largest number of people possible, this is a very small place, with only 8 seats, not at a table, but at a counter, and it was one of the most amazing experience I've ever had at a restaurant! Being a restaurant, one needs to mention something about the food, which was absolutely fabulous, delicious, definitely one of the best meals I ever had! But since restaurants are made of people, i need to express our deepest appreciation for the owner and his wife, doing all that amazing cooking! One of the best experiences we've ever had at a restaurant, will definitely come back soon.

The cellar serves as the pulsating heart of the estate, orchestrating the winemaking process guided by a dedicated enology team.
We stopped in to sample of of their olive oil. We were served up a 'flight' of six different kinds of olive oil along with bread. Our server took the time to explain the different olive oils that we would be sampling, and she was kind enough to answer all of our questions regarding the process of making olive oil. It was a very fun and relaxing afternoon.

During our 3 weeks in Portugal the dining experience here is by far the best ever. Each dish surpassed the previous one and led to the most amazing dessert ever. Cannot recommend highly enough.

One of the best meals we had in Portugal and a Michelin restaurant. As expected for a winery, the wine pairing was great with a combination of both commercial and experimental wines. Nevertheless, the star of the meal is definitely the food. It is just outstanding with every single dish being exceptionally tasty and well balanced made with local ingredients and flavours.

We actually had lunch at the Wine Bar Esporao and chose the surprise menu Esporao 1 with a bottle of Esporao Reserva white. The food was excellent, well presented and amply portioned. Service was timely and professional. Overall great experience!
Thierry D — Google review
We had an unforgettable experience dining at Esporão today. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed — not only by the attentive and well-informed staff, but also by the breathtaking setting. The views over the reservoir and vineyards are absolutely stunning and set the tone for a relaxed, elevated meal. The wine selection was outstanding — thoughtfully curated and deeply connected to the region, with excellent recommendations from our knowledgeable server. As for the food: it was truly remarkable. Each dish was creative, beautifully presented, and full of depth — a perfect blend of innovation and respect for Alentejo’s culinary heritage. Every bite felt like a celebration of local flavor, reimagined in a modern and thoughtful way. We were especially appreciative of how inclusive and welcoming the staff were. We were joined by friends who had a certified service dog, and we were made to feel completely comfortable dining indoors. The team handled everything with kindness and professionalism, which, unfortunately, is not always the case in Portugal — but Esporão absolutely sets the gold standard here. This was not just a meal — it was an experience, and one we’ll remember for a long time. Highly recommended.

The discovery of TascaTosca & Wine Restaurant is truly remarkable. The establishment offers tables situated within a charming shaded alley, accompanied by exceptional and professional service. The menu boasts well-balanced dishes complemented by an extensive selection of exquisite wines. It is highly recommended to inquire about the daily specials as they never fail to impress. The staff, fluent in English, are incredibly friendly and patient when it comes to answering any inquiries regarding the menu.
One of those places you feel excited to find and know you’ll be back. Top quality ingredients, well prepared, very reasonably priced considering the quality and the service was top notch. Even allowing us inside with our little pooch.

Castle of Vila Viçosa is a historic monument located on high ground, offering panoramic views of the city. Built in the 13th century by King Dinis and later reinforced with bastions, it was once home to the Bragancas. The castle stands as a significant part of Portugal's history, having been conquered in the 13th century after centuries of Roman and Muslim occupation. Visitors can explore its ramparts for free or enter for a small fee.
Castle of Vila Viçosa Type: castle Time spent: 15-60 min* Parking: in front of the castle/church *Price: free (walls, church)/ 5 EUR - forte Guided trip is scheduled by hours WC: available Vila Viçosa received its charter letter from D. Afonso III (1248-1279), issued on June 5, 1270. His son D. Dinis, finished the Vila Viçosa Castle construction and built the town's fence. During the reign of D. Fernando I (1367-1383), important improvements were made to the fortification of Vila Viçosa. D. Fernando, Count of Arraiolos, built a palace in Vila Viçosa Castle, elevating this location to the category of seat of the Duchy of Bragança. It currently houses the Hunting Museum, where Manuel Lopo Caroça de Carvalho's private collection is located, and the Foundation's Archeology Museum.

Very well preserved medieval castle and walls, with a nice view of Vila Viçosa. Inside the walls you'll find nice green area to walk, old cemetery and church, a castle open for visiting. Here was the home of one of the most influential portuguese families. Definitely worth a visit a visit if you're in the region.

Picturesque inside walls village. Needs better care from municipality, preserving the walls, gardens and art. Deserves a visit, though. Before eating at Restauração it's even better.

Very well refurbished monument with nice hunting museum and panoramic view over the city of Vila Viçosa
P. O — Google review
Interesting museum with friendly helpful staff. Ancient roman artifacts are very good but sometimes displayed rather dimly. The hunting weapons collection is superb but not to everyone's taste. The trophy displays not only include some mind-numbling examples of the worst form of the art; but also prove the damage that can be caused by over privileged royal families can do when let loose on African wildlife. If you're in the area well worth the entry fee not just for the collections on display, the excellent view from the ramparts but the fact that in 35 degrees it's deliciously cool within its heavy stone walls ;)

Museum Frei Manuel do Cenáculo in Evora is a charming and compact museum that offers a diverse collection spanning different eras. Named after an 18th-century monk and archaeologist who later became the archbishop of Evora, the museum showcases a wide array of artifacts, from ancient Roman relics to fine paintings from the 1900s.
Really great museum with a variety of works of art. Along with the paintings and sculptures there is also a good collection of early Christian and Roman artifacts. Very near the Roman Temple of Diana. With the new government initiative Portuguese and foreign people who have a tax number (NIF) and live in Portugal can now visit 37 museums, monuments and palaces free of charge, 52 days a year and on any day of the week.
Nuno C — Google review
To find a gem such as this museum, located in a small city in the interior of Portugal speaks volumes about what the Portuguese people value. You MUST come. Artifact dating back to 4,000 years before Christ, in pristine condition. Paintings from the Flemish and Dutch schools of art. Artifacts from the Roman occupation. There are Roman ruins outside the museum. If you have a NIF number, the entrance fee is waived. But at 10€, it’s a bargain at half the price.
Buck N — Google review
A small museum that houses one of the greatest works of western art. I had the unique privilege to enjoy the great polyptych in complete silence for a good half hour. The rest of the artworks are interesting especially in presenting the Flemish influence on Portuguese art.
Nikos P — Google review
Fascinating museum with a variety of archeological artifacts from 4000 BC, to Roman marbles to paintings from the 18th century. It’s also part of the Free entrance attractions for Portugal residents.
Marianne T — Google review
Very cool museum with an audio guide included that was very helpful in telling the stories of the artifacts, sculptures and paintings. The museum is right outside the Roman ruins
Juan A — Google review
Built in 1915, it is one of the most important museums in Portugal with more than 20 thousand objects including paintings, archeological artifacts, tiles, and tombstones of medieval times, etc. It is located in the vicinity of the Roman Temple and the Cathedral and a must-visit in Évora. The most famous collection is the 13 piece panel that shows *the Life of the Virgin* by an unknown artist in the 14th century. A highly recommended museum with a small entrance fee of around 3 €

Looked cute, had coffee and eggs so we tried it. Was not packed at all and we ordered two coffees and two simple dishes. It took 45 min to get the food. I don’t understand how that was even possible. One was two fried eggs and bacon and the other was avocado toast (with a way overcooking poached eggs). $30 euros for all of it.

We has a special of the day which was the pork with potato wedges and chimmichuri, the pork was dry, the was ok the potatoes were delicious! Hot and savory and crispy! Best part! The cheese tostada with tomatoes was very average, no flavor and bland. Crispy but cheese had no flavor and bread was average. Great service! Friendly staff! Nice cappuccino and nice place! Food was ok.

We (3 people) had lunch there on a daytrip to Evora. The cafe looks quite unassuming from the outside and it's in a side street but we were really pleasantly surprised. It's actually bigger than it looks. The food was absolutely lovely, very generous portions, we actually didn't manage it all. The menu is a good mix of things. The service was good but it took a while for our drinks to come.
Manon R — Google review
The coffee was good but the WAIT! We have been waiting 90minutes for our food (so cannot speak to that yet). We have one day here in Evora and now are stuck at this cafe forever. The staff could at the very least give a heads up on the wait times if they are super backed up that day.

Nestled in the vibrant Praca do Giraldo, Santo Antão Church is a must-see gem during your visit to Évora. This charming Renaissance church, with its striking white façade, stands proudly at the northern end of the square. As you approach, you'll be greeted by a stunning marble fountain crafted from a single piece of stone—a true testament to artistry. Inside, the church reveals its splendor with beautifully decorated chapels adorned with exquisite tiles that reflect local craftsmanship.
Absolutely beautiful on the inside, with a mix of renaissance, baroque and Portuguese particular styles. Must visit
Marianne T — Google review
It is a very beautiful church and located in the main square of the town. Yet, if you would like to go in just to visit and take some pictures, you need to be more mindful about the visiting hours. On Sundays, it is either celebration inside or the church is closed for a few hours. Due to the timing, I couldn’t take so much picture of the inside even though I went through.
Ekin — Google review
Multi language of description- really helps tourists to learn the rich culture behind the art. I hope every church follows Santo Antao Church’s lead.
Silvia X — Google review
The Church of Santo Antão or Igreja Paroquial de Santo Antão is located in the famous Praça do Giraldo. This is undoubtedly another of the city's many magnificent religious monuments. And one of the most visited by tourists in Évora. The commissioner of the Church of Santo Antão was Cardinal D. Henrique, Archbishop of Évora. He ordered it to be built on the site of the medieval Chapel of Santo Antoninho. To enable its construction, the Roman Triumphal Arch was demolished. Its construction dates back to the beginning of 1557. It is an example of the late Renaissance period and has the characteristics of the so-called hall churches of the time. Its interior is a single hall. The Church of Santo Antão suffered some setbacks early on. It was shaken by a strong earthquake in 1568, which led to work being carried out in 1570 to consolidate the columns and vaults. The interior of the Church of Santo Antão consists of three vaulted naves with granite columns, five sections and three chapels behind the high altar. The five sections of the naves are marked by impressive Ionic columns, which give the whole space great grandeur.
Artur V — Google review
Unfortunately, I had a very unpleasant experience at the Church of Santo Antão. The staff (or clergy) were extremely rude, which completely overshadowed the visit. No matter how beautiful the place is, kindness and respect matter, especially in a religious setting. I would not return and do not recommend it.

Igreja de São João Evangelista, also known as Igreja dos Lóios, is a remarkable monument characterized by the Manueline style. It is part of the Os Loios Convent and stands as an impressive old church in Evora.
Understated on the outside a small fee lets you into a really lovely tiled space in the Evora old town. It's just delightful.
Steve W — Google review
I tried to go inside to pray and the young guy told me that I need to pay to go inside, it’s a “private” church.” We need to pay just to pray in a house of the God?? His attitude seems very childish and unprofessional. To pray, asking people to pay?? That’s absurd and he was very rude and unfriendly.

When visiting Evora, a city rich in history and architectural wonders, one must explore the charming Praca do Giraldo at its center. The well-maintained historic streets lead to various attractions such as the Castelo Velho, Cathedral, University of Evora, Aqueduct of Agua de Prata, Roman Baths, Chapel of Bones and more. Among these landmarks stands out the unique Renaissance-style Graça Church with its striking granite structure adorned with four colossal figures supporting globes.
Very beautiful church! Yet I was able to see only the exterior design. Went to Evora to visit on Sunday and unfortunately this church was closed that day.
Ekin — Google review
We only saw the exterior of this church. It is actually very pretty albeit a bit abandoned. The church was closed. Apparently the keys lies with some volunteers who only show up when they feel like it.
Hugo P — Google review
A nice piece of architecture that you can walk past. It was not possible to get close to the building when I visited but it can be appreciated from afar.
Matt H — Google review
Very interesting external facade with unique statues and bell tower. Although the interior is very bland.
Nuno C — Google review
The Igreja da Graça in Évora is truly unique for its striking and highly influential Mannerist facade, considered one of the earliest and most significant examples of this architectural style in Portugal. Its most distinctive elements are the four large, robust "Atlantes" or "Giants" supporting the upper corners of the main facade, giving the church a monumental and slightly idiosyncratic appearance that sets it apart from other churches of its time. This architectural boldness and decorative originality reflect the new artistic currents of the 16th century. Furthermore, its connection to the Augustinian order and its history as a former convent add another layer to its historical significance. The blend of classical elements with an inventive, almost playful, approach to scale and form makes the Igreja da Graça an unforgettable and crucial landmark in the study of Portuguese Renaissance and Mannerist architecture

Nestled in a cozy space, this charming restaurant offers an intimate dining experience where reservations are highly recommended due to its popularity among locals. The owner and chef warmly welcomes guests, creating a friendly atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. The menu features authentic pasta made from scratch, with each dish crafted to perfection.
Amazing Italian food and friendly people. Our waiter was a kind and hospitable man who went out of his way to make us comfortable. His recommendations were spot on. The atmosphere was relaxing and enjoyable and the food was top shelf! Thank you for a memorable dinner and evening.
Syrus N — Google review
Off the get-go, if you are a local, you must know this spot is amazing, and if you are a tourist (as I was), this restaurant was a spectacular addition to our trip… From the first bite, you can tell this place is run with passion. The pizza is light, thin, and perfectly balanced. I had the mortadella pizza, and it was hands-down one of the best I’ve had anywhere, it was rich without being heavy, and with flavors that linger in the best way. My family tried the pesto, the fungi, and the margherita pizzas, and not a slice was left behind. Each one had its own standout quality, whether it was the earthy depth of the mushrooms, the fresh brightness and rare sweetness of the pesto, or the comforting simplicity of the margherita, they all hit the spot. But what truly makes Buona Forchetta is the warmth of the atmosphere. Sergio and his team make you feel like you’ve stumbled into a local gem, because you have. The service was thoughtful and kind, and the space feels both vibrant and welcoming, like you’re a regular even if it’s your first time. Évora is full of some very vibrant history, but this little restaurant gave us a memory just as lasting. Thank you, Sergio, you’re doing something really special here.

Every course was delicious- the salad with sun dried tomatoes, fresh Parmesan and a touch of buffalo Mozzarella- oh my goodness- it was one of the best salads I have ever had. Also, you must try the spaghetti carbonara! Amazing. Barbara, our server, was so sweet and accommodating!

Extremely cozy spot with fantastically accommodating and friendly staff and great Italian food! We're big fans of Italian restaurants, and Buona Forchetta just became one of my new favourites due to the fantastic pizza with some of the best dough in town and the selection of lesser-known regional wines that are matched in quality with more popular names. Strongly recommend the focaccia and the tiramisu!

I’ve been in Portugal for nearly two months now and without a doubt this was the best experience I had so far. My wife and I walked over from our hotel and almost missed the place. It’s very small so if you can I suggest making a reservation if possible. You will not be disappointed. They squeezed us in and even though a little cramped it felt very cozy. The owner/chef introduced himself and was very personable in every way. When I ordered a wine, he suggested a different one and he was right. The same with my entree. The focaccia was warm and tremendously fragrant to start things off. My wife had the carbonara and I had the filet. The meals were done to perfection. Every detail. His wife was just as pleasant and efficient. Dessert was a wonderful after dinner drink from Monserrat and an Italian dessert pistachio bread. Wow! What an evening. What an experience. I wish you the same. Don’t miss this one!! #stevensleavin

While visiting Évora, we were looking for somewhere to eat, without having made any reservations. We found this restaurant through a quick online search, and liked what the reviews had outlined. As we arrived, we saw a large line of people, but quickly realized it was for a neighboring restaurant. We were quickly accommodated by the gentleman performing all front end duties. A marvel to watch as he was bouncing around the tables (inside and patio) with ease. The food was great! Our daughter, who always turned her nose to lasagna, ate half my plate. We enjoyed it so much that we ordered meals to go as well.

The Convent of the Carthusians, also known as Mosteiro de Santa Maria Scala Coeli, is a historic monastery complex located just outside the old city walls of Evora. Originally built between 1587 and 1598, it was occupied by Carthusian monks until their expulsion in the 19th century. After being used as an agricultural school and later restored by the Eugenio de Almeida family, it now welcomes visitors for guided tours.
Had a wonderful conversation with one of the sisters who was responsible for maintaining this Convent. Not as big or busy as many of the tourist locations but fantastic the way the grounds incorporate the aqueducts into the walls.

Beautiful chapel. But the accessible area was limited today.

The Cromeleque de Vale Maria do Meio is an important historical site located near Evora, Portugal. It is a minor yet significant collection of ancient stones that holds cultural and historical importance. The turnoff towards this attraction may be easily missed, but with the help of Google Maps live navigation, visitors can find their way there. The road leading to the site is challenging and not suitable for those who are inexperienced or faint-hearted.
This is a small cromlech out of the way. It gets few visitors, so there are no restrictions.

This was a lovely tranquil spot and the track was easily drivable
Anne M — Google review
Out of the way very untouristy which was lovely. Being an outlander fan I found it very interesting . Beautiful stones in the middle of nowhere
Linda S — Google review
Definitely go with a guide to get the best experience and history of the place. It's hard to imagine the history behind this sacred place and what it meant to humans at the time. Well worth the experience to sit quietly and ponder our connection to the past.
Nicole M — Google review
Beautiful megalithic stone circle. It is easy accessible by car, the road to the stone circle is unpaved. You can visit the megalithic stone circle 24/7 for free. This stone circle is estimated to be around 7000 years old.

Beautiful peaceful place, with wonderful flowers around the stones.

A small and compound spot for one night. We overnighted with three other campers between the standing stones.

Situated close to Museu de Évora, the hotel is praised for its excellent facilities and services by satisfied guests.
This place is amazing! Dinner was booked full but the bar was open. Definitely get the burger, even if you’re American and traveling through. Breakfast was the best in Portugal so far. The even offered a free art class which was fantastic.

I had a wonderful stay at Convento do Espinheiro, Historic Hotel & Spa. The property is absolutely beautiful, with so much history and charm woven into every detail. The atmosphere is serene and welcoming, making it the perfect place to relax and unwind. The amenities were excellent, and I truly enjoyed everything the hotel had to offer — from the peaceful surroundings to the well-kept facilities. The staff were warm, attentive, and made the experience even more special. The property is spread out and be aware that there was a line for breakfast, so don't sleep in! Overall, it was a memorable and positive stay, and I would gladly return again.
Sean G — Google review
First class hotel, warm staff, clean rooms, sumptuous breakfast. They really think of everything here and are keen to please in a professional friendly manner. The front desk, restaurant servers and bar staff are all hospitality perfect. The pools are delightful. The property is a joy and a historical treasure. We will return!
Martha H — Google review
We stayed here for nights in October 2025. It was wonderful. Our room was lovely. The restaurant and bar were great. Super breakfast. We used the indoor pool each day after touring the town. Great location for exploring the region. We knew it was outside of town, but were initially surprised about the location. We were worried that it would be a hassle to go to town and find parking. We were so relieved to find out it was super easy. The front desk team pointed out on the map where there is safe and easy parking just outside of the town walls, a brief walk to the Roman ruins. Super easy. Best was the staff....so friendly and helpful. This place is a special treat....you should go!
Michael M — Google review
Dining at the restaurant in Convento do Espinheiro was a memorable experience. The setting is stunning with dining inside a former convent adding a unique and peaceful atmosphere that is both elegant and historic. The food was refined and beautifully presented with flavours that highlight the richness of Alentejo cuisine. The service was professional and attentive without being intrusive. It is the perfect place for a special meal whether you are staying at the hotel or visiting Évora. A truly unique and high-quality dining experience in a magical setting.
Claudia C — Google review
The ugliest hotel room I ever saw for the highest price. After one night I couldn’t wait to leave. I asked for a refund for the remaining nights so I could leave early but the staff refused. I feel like I was robbed by paying 400 euros a night for such an unpleasant environment . The breakfast buffet was also very poor (I’d rate it 4/10) The whole hotel has a tired and creepy vibe, definitely wouldn’t recommend to anyone and obviously would never go back.
Phil W — Google review
Beautiful place, but food and service is meh. Definitely not a 5 star hotel which is a shame and could easily be done by stepping up the management. 1. Hotel occupies a nice space and we had fun exploring all the different areas. Staying in a renovated convent was definitely a highlight for us. 2. Restaurants are only open for dinner. Their hyped Italian restaurant serves - just like most places - processed cheap white flour pizzas and the Carbonara is watery. The bread cover was nice but overpriced. 3. There is no valet service. The staff will only get luggage from the car after checking in, and then you have to go park the car somewhere yourself. 4. Miscommunication between the staff is common, and there is no follow up on inquiries made. Staff is often absent at service places like the bar and we had to walk to the reception to get help to find the missing bartender. Okay for 2-3 star hotel but not for 5 star. 5. We liked that they provided two glass bottles of water in the room every day. There is a card in the room to wish you enjoy the contents of the minibar, but it’s empty. 6. The rooms are spacious, the bed is large and we loved the walk-in shower. The aircon in room 218 was very weak and it took till 1am for the room the cool down so we could sleep under the blankets. If you keep the bathroom door open it will just not cool down at all. Outside it was 19C only, but the window was too small to create airflow. Great for a quick stopover but lacks service and luxury for an extended stay.

FITAPRETA VINHOS offers a unique blend of tradition and modernization, reflecting the deep-rooted winemaking culture and character of Alentejo. The winery is located in a 14th-century palace and wine estate just 10 km from Evora, providing a magical and romantic atmosphere for special events like weddings. Visitors are enchanted by the adventure of reaching the winery through vineyards, greeted by a grand gate and surrounded by picturesque scenery.
Stopped in for a tour on the way from Lisbon to Sevilla. Staff was very polite and knowledgeable. The facility is small but well maintained. The white wine was very refreshing. The red was exceptional. We also had made arrangements to eat and the black hoof pork was delicious and was the milk and goat cheeses. Well worth the drive.

We came here specifically to try the Fitapreta wines, thanks to a recommendation from a local friend. If you’re a wine enthusiast, the tasting experience is a must-do. We chose the €45 'Big Picture' option and were able to sample 5excellent wines. The staff is truly nice and helpful, making the whole experience highly enjoyable. Be sure to try their Azores production; they are genuinely special and stand out.

A must in Alentjo, the tour was as much historical as it was about wine. Andre was generous in sharing his knowledge and very connaisseur explaining the art of wine making. Great place to spend time, relax and enjoy this wonderful estate rich in all it senses :)

If you are near Évora: FITAPRETA is a must! ♥️ The gorgeous landscape of Alentejo’s rolling hills of cork oak, olive trees, and vineyards is beautifully expressed at Fita Preta, whose 14th century and neo-classical architecture create a dreamscape where you can walk through the portals of time into the past, while fully immersed in the splendor of the moment. The wine tasting & tour of the winery (guide was great), with ancient frescos, walls of wine aging in oak barrels, expansive terraces, and new restaurant was a delicious-delight. Alexandra, the co-creator/owner, was wonderful as always. Her added extra heart, charm, & thoughtfulness has made Fita Preta a place for all to fall love. Merci beaucoup e muito obrigada ♥️

The Aqueduto de Évora, also known as the Agua da Prata Aqueduct, is a remarkable construction dating back to 1537 during the reign of D. Joao III. It was designed and built by architect Francisco de Arruda to transfer water from Graca springs in Divor to Évora over a distance of approximately 18 km. This aqueduct is integrated into the Historic Center of the City and still functions today.
While you can find such aquedutos elsewhere in Portugal, these in Évora are grand, very tall and elegant.
