Located on the western edge of Dartmoor in Devon, England, Lydford Gorge is a natural wonder and a hidden gem. Managed by the National Trust, it offers free entry to members and features the deepest river gorge in the South West. Visitors can marvel at the 27-meter-high White Lady Waterfall and experience the thundering water of Devils Cauldron as it cascades into deep pools below.
A wonderful place to visit. There is ample parking. A great cafe on site and the walk down to the waterfall was a mixture of magical and mystical. Make sure you hold those handrails!

Amazing scenic walk through the gorge! A little slice of rainforest in Devon. A must visit!
Kylee K — Google review
Great walk through lovely scenery. It was raining when we went which just added to the experience! The walk was challenging in places, but a good challenge for me
Aidan. G — Google review
Drove 100 miles to get here sign said closed due to high winds... there were none. Walked in anyway, new paths instead of the previous steps, a big improvement
Chris N — Google review
Lydford Gorge is pure magic towering trees, rushing streams, and the breathtaking White Lady Waterfall. The Devil’s Cauldron roars with raw power, making the walk thrilling and unforgettable. A bit steep in places, but well worth it. A true Devon gem!
AJIBOLA A — Google review
Very nice walk through the gorge and woods. Didn't see alot of people, so was very quiet for most of the walk apart from the birds and running water.
Benjamin M — Google review
Love it here, fantastic woodland walks
Richard K — Google review
Beautiful waterfall and paddling area. Scary side cliff walks. But great for climbers. Alternative straight path options. I found the cafe very expensive. The staff on entrance were very welcoming and informative. Beautiful area of outstanding beauty. Quite a journey by bus. But can be done.

Nature preserve
Wistman's Wood is a captivating open space and walking spot, characterized by ancient moss-covered trees, granite boulders, and an otherworldly atmosphere. The Wistmans Wood Walk offers a delightful riverside stroll along the West Dart River, leading through an expanse of centuries-old forest. This trail provides stunning views of the moorland landscape and allows visitors to immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of Dartmoor National Park.
Parking up the car at Princetown we expected a walk of around 15 minutes. In reality it was more like 30+ minutes. But as with any experience the journey is just as important as the destination. The walk to the woods was very enjoyable. There are stretches of straight flat paths but there are also parts where you have to pick your way through a fair few stones and rocks similar to a coastal walk. All part of the fun. There are also plenty of sheep to say hi to (dog walkers should keep their dogs on a lead). On arrival the wood does not disappoint. It is small and due to its protected status you are requested to walk around, rather than through it. However, there are some great photo opportunities. Take some water with you, as on a warm day it can be a little tiring. Walking shoes would be better than trainers. The phone signal was ok. Treat this as a pilgrimage and your soul will soar.
Paul G — Google review
Very tranquil. I'd recommend to walk just past the woods to a meditation stone for the best experience. Also, take a thermos of hot tea and a warm coat. It the wind can be a bit chilling and there's no cover. Also, due to the distance to the wood, use the bathroom before hand. It can take 30-40 mins to walk back to the pub. Busy earlier in the day and afternoon. Quiet if you go towards the end of the day closer to sunset. Just make sure you time it right so you're not out there at night. Parking is very limited by the gate, but I think you can park by the pub if you get a drink.
Jozef G — Google review
If you’re going to Wistman’s Wood, you should be expecting that you haven’t been able to actually enter the forest for a long time. It’s ancient and needs ongoing preservation because of people not respecting the basic rule of “don’t wander from the paths near the forest”. It is a wonderful sight, even from the edges and the surrounding area is brilliant for hiking in sunny weather. The walk up to Wistman’s Wood takes around 15-30 minutes depending on your mobility, the trail is bumpy but manageable if you are an older individual, but do take care as there are a few places where you can lose your footing.
Ebonheart_ S — Google review
Went to Wistman’s Wood last weekend with our two dogs. We parked at Two Bridges Hotel which cost £5 to park (pay at reception). Then we walked to Wistman’s Wood. You will need to walk the car park and across the road and walk towards the woods. It’s quite obvious which way to go, but if you are not sure, ask at reception whilst you pay for parking. There is free parking opposite the hotel but it could be busy on nice weather days. The walk is a little rocky, if it’s wet you will definitely need wellies or good walking boots. After walking for about 15/20 mins you will arrive at Wistman’s Wood. It is very special, google it! Check the history, it’s rather enchanting. This time we discussed to continue walking past the wood and see if we could get round to the other side of the valley. This ended up extending the walk by about 2 hours and we had to cross a river. I think we may have gone the shortcut which ended up being a long cut. I think possibly if you walked on to the nearby tor there may be an easier way round. However, it was an adventure and walking back the other side of the valley was amazing. You walk along next to a man made stream and then through an enchanted wood (see pics) the woods are beautiful, covered in moss. You can walk circular and you will end back up at the two bridge hotel if you follow the river back after walking alongside the stream. It’s a lovely walk and if you have dogs they will love it! Watch out for cows, they might be around but as long as you keep out their way they will keep out of yours. Pop your dogs on a lead if you see any. Can’t wait to go back.
Matt V — Google review
This place will always hold a special place in my heart. There’s a mystical beauty here that feels timeless, and it’s wonderful to see steps being taken to protect it. A truly enchanting spot—well worth a visit, but tread with care.
Kim B — Google review
What an amazing place. Technically it’s a rainforest because it gets more than 2000mm rain/year. It’s made from twisted old dwarfed oak trees, rare moss and lichens and boulders. You’re told not to enter the forest but to view from the edge so as not to harm the delicate habitat. It’s possibly the last remaining piece of original post-glacial woodland in the UK.
Chris G — Google review
Finally visited this magical place and was not disappointed. Went early (05.40hrs) on a Saturday and had the place to myself. Parked in the small but free car park. Footwear with good grip and ankle support is recommended as the walk takes you across rocks and uneven ground. Be aware the woods are on fairly steep ground. Abide by the signs and enjoy!
Feizal M — Google review
A really nice treck with stunning landscapes and atmospheric little forest. If moss covered rock, twisted trees and big open spaces are your thing, it is a treat.

History Museums
The Dartmoor Prison Museum, located next to the historic Dartmoor Prison in Princetown, offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of this renowned facility. The museum showcases displays on prisoners, restraints, and uniforms dating back to 1809 when the prison was established for holding Napoleonic War prisoners. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring items confiscated from inmates, as well as learn about the daily life within the prison's imposing granite walls.
Brilliant visit this and well worth the visit. Cornish history and heritage being preserved here. Photos make the visit, a view into the past
Mark H — Google review
The collection may not be huge but is very interesting. We learned a lot and most of all enjoyed that dogs are allowed in the museum.
Dennis B — Google review
Turned up at just before 3pm. Google says closes at 430p Door says closes at 4pm. Lights were turned off and we felt the hint to leave at 345p as the worker was out the door and off on his motorbike by 350p after not wanting to sell any merchandise by advising register already off. Arrive earlier and would be a nice prison museum
Ty ( — Google review
A great insight into part of the prison life, a great display of items and costumes. There was a fantastic display of prisoners work. There was a lower section but requires stairs to access. There was a small selection of items to purchase. Car park was adequate, card only no cash. It was relatively busy when we arrived but they said it often is when it's raining. Photo also shows the entrance as SatNav may not be accurate

Interesting. Good views of the prison too. When you see the contraband it makes you think too. Some great craft stuff too ie matchbox makes and origami models

Outdoor Activities
Nestled in 33 acres of picturesque parkland just outside Plymouth, Dartmoor Zoo is a family-owned conservation and education charity. It boasts an impressive array of wildlife, including 72 types of mammals, 38 species of birds, 21 species of reptiles, and various invertebrates. The zoo offers seasonal events such as outdoor cinema screenings and evening classes on conservation and animal welfare.
We had our wedding at Dartmoor zoo in September 2025. Jade was very warm and welcoming and from the start made it a much less stressful experience. She answered questions and came up with solutions promptly. The team were accommodating with setting up our wedding and also clearing up after. We had an absolutely amazing wedding day and our guest all had a fantastic time. The meet the meerkats and falconry made it such a memorable day for everyone involved.

We were visiting the area and thought we’d stop in to Dartmoor Zoo as they are supposed to have one of the largest collections of big cats. The zoo wasn’t as big as we thought it might be, so you could easily walk around in half a day but it was still packed full with lots to see. We met a few volunteers working at the zoo who were extremely knowledgable and obviously had a great passion for what they did. We attended some of their talks which were very interesting. It was great to see lots of the animals and big cats up close. I would have given 5* but I think certain areas of the zoo perhaps need a big of TLC, and some of the enclosures needed updating, with some of the larger animals seemingly needing bigger enclosures with more enrichment.
Mel W — Google review
Great little Zoo, friendly knowledgeable staff. Don't go here expecting a massive Zoo with hundreds of animals, instead think of it as a more up close experience, the staff actually care for these animals it's not just a Saturday job so to speak, and as an added bonus they're not trying to sell you stuff every 10 paces. So why only 4 out of 5 stars I hear you ask, well....... Their coffee sucks, that is it plain and simple, you might like it I didn't. I had burger and chips from the Cafe, the burger was tasty and the chips were nice and crispy, my Mrs had Fish and Chips, the only thing she said was the fish could be a little bigger but I think we both agreed it is simple nice hot food which is all we wanted. Great job Dartmoor Zoo thank you.

This is a lovely little wildlife park, it's great for a morning or afternoon but not enough for us for the day. There's lot's of animals to see and information on them all. The staff are all so friendly. The disabled parking is inside the park up the hill. If needed you need to purchase your tickets then they will open the gates and you can drive in. There's a nice cafe selling light lunches as well as cakes. The animals all seem happy and well looked after although some of the enclosures could be larger. It does look like they are doing lots of work to improve this.
Hannah W — Google review
If you have a guest in a wheelchair, basically forget it. Hills all over the zoo. Parts of the pathways are not maintained, if a pathway at all. Only good part is parking for disabled, you get to park in the middle of the zoo. Animals could do with a bit more food in my opinion. Do have a variety of animals, but not many. Is great for younger children for a few hours.
Nigel B — Google review
A small but well kept zoo. Animals is beautiful condition- the jaguar in particular. The otters were very entertaining too. Had a lovely chat with a keeper about their newt. A shout out to the cafe team for perfectly prepared gluten free pizza that was coeliac safe! Will definitely visit again.

Had a Brilliant day at Dartmoor Zoo. All the staff were very helpful and friendly. In particular Henry knew a lot about the animals and was a lovely guy. A lot of the staff are volunteers and you can tell they really enjoy what they do. Loved dragon the tiger, he really put a good show for the visitors. Also loved the otters. It was a shame about the rainy weather but still didn’t want to leave!

Had a thoroughly lovely day today at Dartmoor Zoo with my 3 children who also had a great time. Animals all looked well looked after, the staff were very friendly and the zoo itself was very very clean. The tiger was a particular highlight as you could see it in all it's majestic glory fairly close. The birds and monkeys were also very lovely to see. Would highly recommend. We spent around 3 hours there and that felt about right and saw most things at least twice in that time. Very much looking forward to utilising the annual ticket and to go back and see anything we missed.

The Cornish Arms is a charming inn located in the heart of Tavistock, known for its vintage-style rooms and suites. Following a complete transformation in 2013 by St Austell Brewery, this establishment has evolved into an elegant gastropub with a focus on providing top-notch offerings. The menu features a wide range of dishes, from simple classics to more elaborate fare, accompanied by an impressive selection of drinks.
Nice venue, with comfortable atmosphere. We didn't book and were easily able to sit in the bar for dinner around 7:30 on a sunday evening. Really excellent vegan menu, the selection was great, with some very interesting options and delicious onion rings. The desserts were really special and we left absolutely stuffed and very happy.

Stayed overnight at the Cornish Arms have there own car park and rear of pub. Rooms are good size and well furnished, well equipped modern bathroom with walk in rainfall shower. Only downside is WiFi a little lacking keeps on dropping out. We ate in the restaurant and the food was really very good and the service was top notch. The included breakfast was not massive but very good quality and again service was excellent. So all in all a really great place would definitely stay there again.
James T — Google review
I've been here a couple of times now and both times were great experiences. The latest meal (for four of us) was excellent, all of us had different dishes and all were good. The service is attentive but sensible. The atmosphere is good, a gentle buzz with plenty of diners even though we sat down really early (6pm on a Wednesday out of season). Not cheap, but very good value still. We'd come back for sure.

Cannot rate this hotel highly enough. It fully deserves it's position in the Sunday Times top 50 best Gastropubs. The rooms, food and service are all so good. It was a chance booking but what a find. To cap everything else off to have it's own parking space for every room while in such a central location is amazing. This is a true gem of a find.
Fiona H — Google review
Had a lovely vegan dinner here. It was great to have an entirely separate menu so we could easily see what we could eat. The options were interesting and absolutely delicious and included a sticky toffee pudding (!!!!!) It was a random and damp Thursday evening but the restaurant was busy, with a lovely atmosphere, music at the right level, good buzz but tables are far enough apart that you can hear each other. Fantastic service from everyone - professional and efficient but really friendly. Would definitely recommend.
Kate H — Google review
Went here on the back of a recommendation. I can honestly say that the whole experience was outstanding. It’s not cheap but it shouldn’t be. The food and service was excellent. Some things are worth spending money on. This is one. 5 star and the best meal and service I think I’ve ever had.
Crowder211 — Google review
Wow what great pub. Chose it for its food primarily and what a great choice. Definitely the best fish and chips I've ever had, and the beers were good too! Nice friendly staff and locals who made you feel welcome . Downside is parking, yes it's there if you're staying, but not too much bother to park in a public car park. I'd definitely return if in the area

Gidleigh Park is a luxurious estate nestled in the picturesque Dartmoor National Park. The grand Tudor house is set amidst 107 acres of stunning gardens, offering an elegant and cozy retreat for guests. The rooms and suites are beautifully decorated with antique furnishings and offer a plush country-chic ambiance. Guests can enjoy activities such as lawn tennis, croquet, and exploring the mature grounds with bluebell-filled woods in spring.
First class 'old school' service in the most beautiful Devon setting. I haven't been to Gidleigh since 2010 and whilst it has not changed at all, it doesn't need to. The service is class winning throughout your stay and makes you feel as if you own the country estate and are being pampered to by your own trusted team. Food remains very good and the setting is Dartmoor at its best. Even my 6 year old rated it as 'epic'.

Amazing place to stay, location is beyond expectations. We really enjoyed out stay and will be back soon hopefully. As soon as you step out the door you can go on some amazing walks through the woods which we really enjoyed. Next time we will make sure to get a picnic.

We booked afternoon tea last Sunday and really enjoyed it. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by two lovely ladies who seated us and took our order. The waiter was also very knowledgeable and explained everything that was being served. The hotel is clean and tidy with a pleasant ambience. The only comment I would make is to ensure a clean cloth is used when polishing the glass on the table, as it had some smears. Apart from that, everything else was great.
Davidobi82 — Google review
My husband and I stayed at Gidleigh park for our anniversary, the attention to detail was second to none, they took our luggage upstairs as we arrived and the room was very inviting with chocolates, fruit and water already in there, they also brought up complementary room service for our anniversary. The room was spotless and the grounds were amazing, we played tennis and I sat and read my book outside with an amazing view! Very relaxing and peaceful!
Maddy C — Google review
My partner and I visited Gidleigh Park to celebrate my 50th birthday. I wanted to experience an exceptional evening with outstanding food …… a bucket list evening. I chose the regular three-course menu, while my partner, who is vegetarian, had the vegetarian option. Both were exceptional. The service was impeccable, with the staff providing a detailed explanation of each course. Even the bread and small appetisers which make it feel more like a five-course experience were delicious. The wine list is extensive but pricey, ranging from around £40 up to £1,500 a bottle! Unfortunately, it was a bit beyond our budget this time, however, I would have loved to enjoy a bottle or two with the meal. If you are reading this and fancy buying me a bottle please do! After dinner, we relaxed in the drawing room with a lovely coffee, and the team surprised me with a small birthday treat, as we’d mentioned it when we arrived (see photo). A quick heads-up: the drive to Gidleigh Park is quite winding, and there’s a very narrow bridge you’ll need to cross carefully — it’s only about 7ft wide, so it can feel tight if you’re driving an SUV, Land Rover, or a larger car. All in all a great night out! Well worth a visit! Treat yourself!
Matt V — Google review
We happened to pass this hotel during a long hike and were received very hospitably. What a pleasure to have a coffee and lunch on the terrace. They even offered to refill our water bottles with water, ice cubes and lemon. These small tokens of kindness show a great sense of care for the guests. We loved it.

We were recommended this place to eat after a business meeting & were so impressed we have been 3 times now. Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. They know their ingredients so well that ordering food to avoid allergens was made easy. They ticked my menu to help me. I was even more impressed that they had a dog free area to eat in. Big thank you for that. The grounds are immaculate, and the peacocks and water wheel with ferns were a joy. Just off the main drag, it is worth the few minutes detour for yummy wholesome food. Well worth booking as it gets busy. Go, eat and enjoy! (I can only speak of the food)

Came here to have dinner. Amazing place that can easily be missed off the road. A tranquil place for family/friends gatherings, really polite staff, food was really good. The vegetable lasagna was especially creative and full of flavour. Good selection of cheeses. Great experience!

Food nice. Location amazing. The service from the male waiter was exemplary. However when we walked in there were many waitresses walking past us with stone cold aloof expressions ignoring us completely. No one looked rushed off their feet, they just ignored us, despite us smiling and trying to get their attention. There were 7 of us and a beautiful white husky in the bar area waiting patiently, so there was no excuse to say they didn't see us. Eventually we got the attention of man behind the bar who was very pleasant and showed us to our table. The food was good. Not incredible, but good. We'd come back, but in future I'd be a little firmer with the dolled-up waitresses to treat us more like customers and not like obstacles. A quick "We'll be right with you!" Would have gone a long way. The grounds are really nice with peacocks everywhere.

The staff were really friendly and very professional and the food was delicious. I had read about the apple tray bake being a must, we were all absolutely stuffed, but had 1 to share between us. Taylors in Tavistock is a trendy and unique eatery that offers a mix of delicious cuisine and a fashionable atmosphere. This contemporary venue has an eclectic and welcoming feel, combining the old with the new. It's a family-run establishment that serves inspired menus, homemade cakes, fresh coffee, and classic cocktails. The restaurant also offers afternoon tea with a fantastic array of loose-leaf brews and delightful bakes accompanied by upbeat playlists.
High quality food in a lovely atmosphere. This is one of the places to go for food in Tavistock. It's got a high quality menu, served with enthusiasm and great presentation. Book, as it gets full, especially on the weekend. You will not be disappointed 👍 Their tapas starters for the evening meals are well worth exploring. Mains are likewise an interesting variety of complementary flavours, with high quality presentation. It's not cheap, but you get what you pay for - an investment your palate will appreciate!

I went to Taylors with friends to have lunch. Even though we came a little late at around 2pm, they still allowed us to order food. Their potato and leek soup was delicious and so was steak and ale pie. The service was very friendly and fast. This is definitely an excellent place to grab lunch.
Slava K — Google review
Waitress team friendly and polite. Some of the kitchen team need to remember that they work in an open kitchen and that customers can see them and (most apparent for this visit) that they can also hear them. Calamari starter was lovely and they have made it their own. Rib-eye steak lacked wow factor on first look and was backed up but being over cooked- medium well but was ordered medium rare 😔 Slaw was tasty but mushroom rubbery. Dessert was lovely and they did their best the make it a slightly bigger portion as we were sharing and to apologise for what was overheard in the kitchen. Would love to come back if the place and staff take a more professional approach to the job.

Taylor's serves delicious food and us situated in a great central location in Tavistock. The Sunday roast was cooked to perfection and reasonably priced. We also ordered wine and a delicious desert. The staff and owners are super friendly. I'd definitely recommend this restaurant to locals and visitors.

A friend and I decided to meet at Taylors for lunch today and what a good decision that was! The restaurant changed ownership recently and it has improved considerably since then. In fact it's now my first choice for morning coffee or lunch in Tavistock. We both had the sourdough sandwiches and they were delicious and beautifully presented. I decided on the smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwich and my friend had the ham, mustard, gherkin and tomato sandwich. If you're looking for a nice atmosphere in which to have breakfast, morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner you really can't beat Taylors. The staff are friendly, the seating is comfortable and food is excellent! Thanks to all concerned. Give it a try and I'm sure you won't be disappointed!

A good place to eat with kids as they have a larger-than-usual children's menu. And the food for grown-ups is very decent too. It's always easy to mess up a full English breakfast but theirs is spot-on. Friendly service too. Recommended

We had dinner for two this evening, some starters, drinks and mains with a bottle of wine. The starters calamari, white bait and scallops were very tasty, well cooked and seasoned. The roasted supreme chicken fulfilled all high expectations set by the name - very good. The best: Surprisingly there was no lamb on the menu, nevertheless the chef created a delicious lamb rump dish on request. Lovely! The wine was good, value for money overall very good. We liked the atmosphere upstairs the most. Thanks to the Taylors service team and chef!! An unforgettable experience, 👉highly recommended.

It did not disappoint, staff were really welcoming and friendly, we had our 3 bullies with us and they arranged a great table for us so they could get comfy and not be in the way. We had the steak and stilton pie, wow!! Homemade and deep filled with quality ingredients, and large portion to boot! Starters were great too, when we’re visiting our daughter again we will definitely be going back Thank you

Just had a nice meal here. Good food prompt friendly service. Wide range of food. Lewis was a great waiter. Pub is dog friendly. Lots of car parking spaces.

This pub is a must. A little odd getting to it, but well worth it. We had the stack pie, and chicken, ham & leak pie followed by apple crumble. It was absolutely delicious and big portions. We left completely stuffed and very very happy. Definitely will be going back.

My favourite pub ever! Such delicious food and generous portions. The steak and stilton pie is huge and super filling. Puddings are great and the staff are really friendly.

Yet another place we dropped in without a reservation and we were accommodated. A fine country pub away from the main road where it needs to be good to survive and it really is. I had the chicken, leek & ham pie. The owner and staff very attentive and welcoming.

Lovely family meal on Thursday evening. The food was outstanding. The staff were friendly and helpful . Great value for money. Great that you can have smaller portions. We all had different meals and desserts. All delicious

We found this gem whilst on holiday. The food was so good we went back for a second visit. The staff welcomed us back like old friends. Our vegan children said their food was outstanding especially the desserts. I wish it was closer to where we live as we would be very regular customers. You must try this wonderful pub. You will not be disappointed.
