Waterfalls
Canonteign Falls, nestled in the heart of Devon's Teign Valley within Dartmoor National Park, is a hidden gem boasting both natural and man-made waterfalls. The falls cascade down ancient rock formations into tranquil lakes, creating a spectacular woodland scenery. This Victorian folly is surrounded by private parkland and features a magical fern garden with ancient tree ferns and a unique 11 ft Willow dinosaur.
If you're in the area, this is an absolute must-visit. The attraction is reasonably priced, very well maintained, and packed with fascinating historical facts along a thoughtfully designed one-way route. The walk takes about an hour and involves a fair number of steps and inclines, so it may not be ideal for those with limited mobility. However, for those who can manage it, the journey is incredibly rewarding. There are engaging features along the way, especially for children, making it a fun and educational outing for families. Before you begin, take a moment to relax by the café — the pond views are peaceful and scenic, and if you're lucky, you might even spot some baby ducks! The real highlight, though, is reaching the top, where the views of the waterfalls are simply breathtaking. Photos just can’t capture the scale and beauty of it. I would recommend booking in advance during the busier seasons to guarantee entry. Overall, a wonderfully curated adventure that combines nature, history, and thoughtful design. Highly recommended!

What a wonderful, varied and unexpected treat. This place has something for everyone. The climb up to the top of the falls is quite challenging for older slower limbs but I managed it fine. The view is spectacular. Then, after a good lunch break, we visited the Lower Lakes with artwork, poetry,m a henge and more. Beautiful. Well worth your time.
Nick E — Google review
Lovely to visit especially in the autum. Steep prices and to pay a pound for a map was cheeky. Restaurant also expensive. I do understand that they are an isolated location and have a large maintenance bill however. Would recommend but not for elderly people who cannot walk far if they want to see the waterfalls.
Chris J — Google review
We visited on Monday & what a wonderful experience. Fabulous staff, such a pretty, well cared for environment with beautiful views. lots of shaded woodland, cool ferns & the sound of thundering water, perfect for this scorching weather. The walk is not for cissies! We were so pleased with ourselves for reaching the top 🥳 (66yrs of age) but so worth the effort. We felt we earned our delicious Devon cream tea. I had the savoury, cheese scone - hot from the oven, with cream cheese and an onion marmalade with proper loose leaf tea in a innovative little teapot. My husband had the traditional with jam and cream, equally delicious. Then we strolled round the lovely gift shop before making our way home. Highly recommended. We used a Virgin Experience voucher given to us by our family. Next time, we'll go for the afternoon tea option with sarnies etc, they also do a doggy afternoon tea!! 😀 Amazing place....

What a lovely day to end our last day for a week down here. Fabulous walk up and around the waterfall. Make sure you have good walking footwear 'durable' not accessible by wheelchair or buggy, but some lovely views. Well posted with signs, entertainment for little ones, keep them entertained as well.
Lille C — Google review
Amazing Great experience, Well kept and beautiful walk / hike to the waterfalls. Some steep climbs up pathways and steps Everything clearly displayed and sign posted Lots of rest points if needed. The lower lakes and grounds also worth walking around Lovely cafe for drinks and food Gift shop on way out Toilets located only on lower ground at entrance/exit near to Cafe Great value Would recommend
Victoria G — Google review
Dog Friendly! Lovely staff. Really nice cafe with great choices. Cream tea experience too. Walk is great with lots to see and read along the way up to the falls. Great for kids, once you walk back down you go through a big play park too.
Phoebe H — Google review
Such a wonderful place to spend a day. I visited with my family (ages ranging from 80 - 5), and we all managed and enjoyed the fantastic hike up to the top of the falls. It was probably more challenging than we expected but thoroughly worth the effort. Lots of cute and imaginative things and natural wonders to entertain the children on the walk, and a beautiful view at the top. The staff in the shop and cafe were so friendly and the food was tasty. We went during Oct half term and did the pumpkin trail. There were families walking alpacas during our visit and we got to stroke them and chat to the owners. Highly recommend this gem for all ages.

Outdoor Activities
Nestled in 33 acres of picturesque parkland just outside Plymouth, Dartmoor Zoo is a family-owned conservation and education charity. It boasts an impressive array of wildlife, including 72 types of mammals, 38 species of birds, 21 species of reptiles, and various invertebrates. The zoo offers seasonal events such as outdoor cinema screenings and evening classes on conservation and animal welfare.
We had our wedding at Dartmoor zoo in September 2025. Jade was very warm and welcoming and from the start made it a much less stressful experience. She answered questions and came up with solutions promptly. The team were accommodating with setting up our wedding and also clearing up after. We had an absolutely amazing wedding day and our guest all had a fantastic time. The meet the meerkats and falconry made it such a memorable day for everyone involved.
Simone H — Google review
We were visiting the area and thought we’d stop in to Dartmoor Zoo as they are supposed to have one of the largest collections of big cats. The zoo wasn’t as big as we thought it might be, so you could easily walk around in half a day but it was still packed full with lots to see. We met a few volunteers working at the zoo who were extremely knowledgable and obviously had a great passion for what they did. We attended some of their talks which were very interesting. It was great to see lots of the animals and big cats up close. I would have given 5* but I think certain areas of the zoo perhaps need a big of TLC, and some of the enclosures needed updating, with some of the larger animals seemingly needing bigger enclosures with more enrichment.
Mel W — Google review
Great little Zoo, friendly knowledgeable staff. Don't go here expecting a massive Zoo with hundreds of animals, instead think of it as a more up close experience, the staff actually care for these animals it's not just a Saturday job so to speak, and as an added bonus they're not trying to sell you stuff every 10 paces. So why only 4 out of 5 stars I hear you ask, well....... Their coffee sucks, that is it plain and simple, you might like it I didn't. I had burger and chips from the Cafe, the burger was tasty and the chips were nice and crispy, my Mrs had Fish and Chips, the only thing she said was the fish could be a little bigger but I think we both agreed it is simple nice hot food which is all we wanted. Great job Dartmoor Zoo thank you.
Barry D — Google review
This is a lovely little wildlife park, it's great for a morning or afternoon but not enough for us for the day. There's lot's of animals to see and information on them all. The staff are all so friendly. The disabled parking is inside the park up the hill. If needed you need to purchase your tickets then they will open the gates and you can drive in. There's a nice cafe selling light lunches as well as cakes. The animals all seem happy and well looked after although some of the enclosures could be larger. It does look like they are doing lots of work to improve this.
Hannah W — Google review
If you have a guest in a wheelchair, basically forget it. Hills all over the zoo. Parts of the pathways are not maintained, if a pathway at all. Only good part is parking for disabled, you get to park in the middle of the zoo. Animals could do with a bit more food in my opinion. Do have a variety of animals, but not many. Is great for younger children for a few hours.
Nigel B — Google review
A small but well kept zoo. Animals is beautiful condition- the jaguar in particular. The otters were very entertaining too. Had a lovely chat with a keeper about their newt. A shout out to the cafe team for perfectly prepared gluten free pizza that was coeliac safe! Will definitely visit again.
Marcie F — Google review
Had a Brilliant day at Dartmoor Zoo. All the staff were very helpful and friendly. In particular Henry knew a lot about the animals and was a lovely guy. A lot of the staff are volunteers and you can tell they really enjoy what they do. Loved dragon the tiger, he really put a good show for the visitors. Also loved the otters. It was a shame about the rainy weather but still didn’t want to leave!
Freya R — Google review
Had a successful day at the zoo despite the poor weather. Saw plenty of the animals and enjoyed a good lunch at the restaurant. Not too busy even though it was half term holiday. Thanks too to the knowledgeable volunteers Sam and Liam who were very engaging for our grandson.

Located on the western edge of Dartmoor in Devon, England, Lydford Gorge is a natural wonder and a hidden gem. Managed by the National Trust, it offers free entry to members and features the deepest river gorge in the South West. Visitors can marvel at the 27-meter-high White Lady Waterfall and experience the thundering water of Devils Cauldron as it cascades into deep pools below.
A wonderful place to visit. There is ample parking. A great cafe on site and the walk down to the waterfall was a mixture of magical and mystical. Make sure you hold those handrails!
Mike R — Google review
Amazing scenic walk through the gorge! A little slice of rainforest in Devon. A must visit!
Kylee K — Google review
Great walk through lovely scenery. It was raining when we went which just added to the experience! The walk was challenging in places, but a good challenge for me
Aidan. G — Google review
Drove 100 miles to get here sign said closed due to high winds... there were none. Walked in anyway, new paths instead of the previous steps, a big improvement
Chris N — Google review
Lydford Gorge is pure magic towering trees, rushing streams, and the breathtaking White Lady Waterfall. The Devil’s Cauldron roars with raw power, making the walk thrilling and unforgettable. A bit steep in places, but well worth it. A true Devon gem!
AJIBOLA A — Google review
Very nice walk through the gorge and woods. Didn't see alot of people, so was very quiet for most of the walk apart from the birds and running water.
Benjamin M — Google review
Beautiful waterfall and paddling area. Scary side cliff walks. But great for climbers. Alternative straight path options. I found the cafe very expensive. The staff on entrance were very welcoming and informative. Beautiful area of outstanding beauty. Quite a journey by bus. But can be done.
Joy — Google review
Not the average National Trust visit! This waterfall viewing walk includes an incredibly fun path up through the gorge. This is very exposed and slippery in places, there is a hand rail but no safety fence between you and the fast flowing water below so might not be suitable for misbehaving children and dogs. I completed the full circular walk with a baby on my back so not too dangerous but a challenge none the less and extremely beautiful throughout. I enjoyed it very much and will definitely visit again.

The South Devon Railway is a 19th-century valley steam railway that offers a scenic seven-mile journey along the River Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes. The railway features heritage rolling stock and provides disabled access with reserved spaces for wheelchair users. Visitors can explore the South Devon Railway Museum, enjoy a tearoom, and browse through a model and gift shop at the main station in Buckfastleigh.
Excellent all the way ! We enjoyed the Sunday afternoon tea experience ....fantastic quality . Great selection of finger sandwiches and savouries , freshly baked scones, and cakes. The staff were very attentive and friendly but not intrusive. The steam train experience is lovely as always . 10/10
Susanne D — Google review
A wonderful place to visit if you like Steam Trains. A pleasant ride and experience. We did not book and there was plenty of seats as there were several carriages. The museum has plenty of exhibits to look at. The shop is big and they have a large cafe. Great selection of tasty treats though note it's card only. Parking was not too bad.
Abi S — Google review
A wonderful heritage steam railway line with a brilliant and well stocked model shop at Buckfastleigh Station. The volunteers and staff were friendly and knowledgeable. They helped people on and off the train with a smile. I enjoyed having a walk around the station, yard and the small museum at Buckfastleigh. The steam train ride to Totnes was a gentle trundle through the countryside pulled by a GWR Pannier tank loco and along the river Dart. A really enjoyable day out, if you're in the area check it out. I loved it but I do love trains!
4468 — Google review
Lovely day out on this heritage railway with views along the Dart Valley. Interesting exhibits at all 3 stations and a nice cafe and gift shop at Buckfastleigh. All the volunteers had smiles on their faces and clearly enjoyed what they were doing. Not a criticism but a suggestion, there was little or no signage at Buckfastleigh to direct you to the town centre If anyone wanted to go there. However on the Monday we visited, everywhere except one pub was closed.
Eric P — Google review
Avoiding a wet drizzle day, lovely steam train ride with a mini museum history thanks for our day out...... 🚂 Tip: (if you have BR Pass, need to buy at kiosk as you can't purchase online).... Bacon 🥓 and sausage roll and tea was yummy for this wet day
Lille C — Google review
Wife and I enjoyed the ploughman's lunch which was fantastic. The food was excellent and the service friendly and well orchestrated on the 1hr 30 steam train round trip. You can also use your ploughmans lunch tickets on the line all day. A small museum is worth the visit as well as the shop and cafe.
Darren G — Google review
A lovely trip on along the River Dart on a fabulous steam train. Butterflies and Otters at one end in Buckfastleigh and the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm at the other. Very friendly staff
Andi W — Google review
We visited in the Easter Holidays. We did a round trip and there were plenty of spaces. Cafe, gift shop all well equipped although our sandwiches were a little stale at 12:00. Coffee and ginger bread man on the train were great though from the trolley. Would recommend especially if you have a fan of steam trains! Staff were great also 😄 🚂

River Dart Country Park is a picturesque destination that offers a range of activities for families. The park features adventure playgrounds, a swimming lake with a pirate ship, and camping facilities for both tents and caravans. Visitors can explore the surrounding moors and towns from this convenient base. Additionally, there are accessible family walks in Dartmoor National Park as part of the Miles Without Stiles initiative. Nature trails along the River Dart and through woodlands provide scenic walks for all to enjoy.
Stunning day out in a wonderful woodland setting. Dozens of outdoor things to do for the kids and so much space to roam. Staff on hand to help when needed, all very cheerful. Plus a days entry gets you free reentry for a week! Amazingly good value. We would love to come and stay on site next time.

Would highly recommend for a day out. We had a fabulous day. All the staff were so fun and helpful. We especially appreciated Gracie's help on the high wires...and the lady who was inn charge of canoes was so fun too (didn't make a note of her name sadly). The extra activities were brilliant.. but the other section in the woods was so much fun. A huge adventure playground with lower wires,, rope swings, zip lines, fitness equipment. We will definitely be back!
Deborah D — Google review
We went on a day trip for the high wires (for the parents and the children - min age 8) and the canoes (for the children, me and my 80 yr old Mom). Really enjoyed these lovely grounds and the two activities. Great instructors with a really positive attitude.
Alexandra R — Google review
By far one of the best camping sites I've been on. The facilities are great with plenty of private rooms. The playgrounds, the outdoor water activities and the BMX track are amazing and mostly free. We did bouldering indoors too. It truly is incredible and we will be back again next year!
Tamara F — Google review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Best Campsite Ever! We spent the weekend at Riverdart Country Park for Oktoberfest and honestly had the best time! The atmosphere was fantastic – great food made with locally sourced meat (from less than half a mile away!) and a lovely, friendly team who made everyone feel so welcome. The woodland play areas are a real highlight – perfectly maintained, full of adventure, and such a beautiful setting to sit back and watch your children play. Even the grown-ups couldn’t resist the zip lines! The camping pitches are huge, giving you loads of space to relax, and the shower facilities are spotless and well looked after. Everything about the park feels cared for and thoughtfully managed. We’d definitely recommend bringing wetsuits if you plan to get stuck into the Jolly Pirate ship or the jump pools.. Can’t wait to visit again – Riverdart Country Park really is the best campsite we’ve ever stayed at!
Stephanie S — Google review
What a fantastic place. First time visitors and the first thing that strikes you is friendly and helpful staff. The site is huge and so many different things for our grandchildren to have hours of endless fun. We had what I would say was one of the very best full English breakfasts ever.
Campbell R — Google review
A country park geared to slightly older children with plenty of activities on the site. More than enough free activities included in your ticket along with the beach and water area. We went on a very wet day but none the less we got some nice hot pasties and a hot chocolates. Pay some extra and do the high ropes for example. Can’t wait to visit again.
Steve P — Google review
Very impressed with the kids activities & amenities. Shame weather was not on our side this trip. Will revisit. Only negative is the laundry facilities. Although reasonable priced the washing comes out sopping wet (as if no spin cycle) & the dryer is as useful as a chocolate tea pot. I’m on 4th go & still no where near dry

Hound Tor is a prominent feature in Dartmoor, offering breathtaking views and a quick adventure suitable for all ages. The towering stack of granite rocks provides an attractive composition with Haytor in the background, making it a popular spot for hikers and photographers. The area is also home to hidden gems such as bluebells in May and scattered hawthorn trees in the summer.
Beautiful scenery. Well worth the hike up to the rocks. Good sturdy foot wear required as it is very muddy and you have to climb over rocks in some areas to progress up the hill.
Rachel R — Google review
Having seen Hound Tor on screen we were excited to visit the place with our own miniature hound. 🐩 It's the perfect place for senior dogs since the hill climb from the car park isn't very steep and the ground is very soft grass.
Dennis B — Google review
One of my families favourite Tors. Great for dog walking, kids of any age and brilliant views and walks. Car park is reasonable and we've never had an issue parking, even when busy.
Hannah S — Google review
These granite rocks are what Dartmoor is about especially when on top of high ground giving a great view. Free carpark, sometimes a mobile coffee shop is available. Preferably wear walking boots to climb up to the top and up on the rocks.
Derek — Google review
Very scenic and rustic landscape! Road to the place is quite narrow and difficult to reach by car. But, it's worth the visit ! For normal people, rocks are relatively more tough to climb upon. ;-)
Vrukesh P — Google review
An easily accessible Tor on Dartmoor as there is a free car park close by. A gentle walk to the rocks on the tor. Plenty of climbing / scrambling opportunities. Close to the ruined medieval village. Good views from the top.
Geoff B — Google review
This is not a place for those who are faint-hearted! Climbing the Tor is really fun, but also quite dangerous as there's no restraints. If you're an adrenaline junkie like me, though, then it's a must go.

Historical landmark
Haytor Rocks is a prominent granite tor standing at 1,499 ft. above Dartmoor National Park in Devon. It offers unique views of South Devon's Teignbridge coastline and the moorland. Visitors can explore the area's wildlife, ancient heritage, and history by visiting nearby visitor centers. The location also provides great picnic spots with three large car parks nearby and miles of flat moorland for relaxation or a climb to the top for a scenic picnic experience.
Wonderful experience! Parked car at Dartmoor Information Centre; took an all-day pass at £5.60, but only needed a maximum 3-hour ticket. It's a different experience than normal hiking, especially climbing the rock—it was very windy. Check your weather forecast before starting your trek.
Alen T — Google review
We love this place. The views from the yol are spectacular on a clear day. The climb is relatively easy because there are steps cut into the rock. Great car park and an easy climb. Ice creams and a toilet plus Visitor centre close by too.
William G — Google review
Experienced the changing weather conditions on The Moors in our visit, rain, fog, wind and sunshine, but when the sun shone the views were amazing. Saw sheep and cows grazing in the open. The rocks are spectacular and a good part of a Moors hike
Roland S — Google review
Well worth a visit Make sure to take a warm coat as even on a sunny day it can be a bit blustery at the top. Sturdy shoes with good grip on the soles also a good idea. The view from the top makes it worth the climb
Anne-Maria S — Google review
Great place to walk. Some may not be able to walk to it as it can be a tad steep for little one or those who struggle to walk. There are horses and cows on the field. It’s not a far walk from the car park which is free parking until 10am. I wouldn’t recommend climbing the rocks unless you’re confident and it’s dry.
Mel C — Google review
Impressive in itself and with stunning views out to the sea. Windy! One of the better gift shops at such sites. Some parking sites require payment, some don't.
K N — Google review
Beautiful iconic symbol of Dartmoor giving stunning views of the Moorland and the Devon countryside. Haytor rocks are truly timeless and offer a dramatic backdrop to an excursion on foot or by car. Popular spot for observing the night sky due to the lack of light poloution, especially for photogaphing lunar eclipses and the occasional glimpse of the aurora borealis or noctilucent clouds.

We had a fantastic time at the sanctuary, It was a visually stunning and enriching experience filled with fascinating exhibits and a wonderful ambience. The garden is stunning, with beautiful flowers and relaxing pathways to stroll along. I loved the pond, watching the colourful fish swim by and the turtles. Overall, it's a wonderful place to spend a day exploring and enjoying nature and the otters. If you are lucky you might even see the train passing by The visit left us with lasting memories and a desire to return. It was truly a highlight of our day!

Took my granddaughters here last week. They loved being in the butterfly house, especially when the butterflies landed on them and sat on their hands for ages. There are many to see flying in amongst the plants. There are also terrapins and an iguana which is billed as Izzy the green iguana but is bright orange! The otters however were a bit of a disappointment, even at feeding time. The keeper just put the food into the enclosure and it was not easy to see what the otters were doing. The girls got bored with it very quickly and went back to the butterfly house. There is a small cafe outside and you have to show your tickets again to get back in the butterfly house. There are only snacks of pasties or sausage rolls, but they were delicious. Ice creams and beverages also available. There is a larger eatery in the station area. Nice gift shop, lots of things for young ones, but not much for over 10s. Also items for adults. We spent 3 hours there so definitely a place worth visiting for a morning or afternoon but not a whole day.

A fantastic experience for all ages. The butterfly sanctuary is almost unique - there are few places that allow people to walk directly through an open habitat to find what they can. Two warnings - it is significantly more humid than the local area, and it can smell of the ripe/rotting fruit they feed on. The otters are beautiful and clearly well cared for, with platforms for viewing them above ground and in the nests below. I highly recommend arriving for feeding times to receive the guided tour of the different animals and ensure you see them at their most active. The entire experience was delightful and left children with new favourite animals

We booked to be an otter keeper for a few hours. Such a privilege to be up close and feed these beautiful creatures. Would highly recommend this interactive experience of a lifetime. Oh, and the butterfly house was good too.

I was brought an Otter experience for Christmas and it was absolutely brilliant. I don’t want to give too much away; embrace prepping their fish and bird-related feed; learning about the different Otters and then getting very close to a few for an hands on feeding experience. Plus we were introduced to a few other residents too. Still buzzing about it nearly a week on, loved it.

As a family we had an amazing time at the sanctuary, even in the rain. We done the otter experience which we highly recommend and would do again and again. They are adorable! There was a lot more involved in the experience than I thought it would be. Thank you again Lilly, we had an amazing time. The children are already asking to go again.

I am sometimes sceptical of small places but thought I’ll give it a crack. Well worth it. £35 for family of four so not too bad value. Lots of different butterflies and then lots of otters that are so cute. Make sure you stay for feeding and talk by the staff who are all friendly and approachable. Could have sat there all day watching the otters. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in it around the area.

THE most gorgeous family run place. We went for the otter experience where you get to feed them and spend time with them. Highly recommended and like others have said, don’t want to give too much away! Butterfly house was great too. Amazing day 😃

Bellever Forest, located near Postbridge, is a picturesque picnic spot by the East Dart River. The forest offers an easy circular walk with an optional detour to the Tor, where visitors might encounter Dartmoor Ponies. Families can enjoy picnicking with a view and kids can paddle in the river during summer. The area also features stepping stones across the river and is known for its stunning woodland and riverside walks.
Easily one of the most beautiful places on Dartmoor (and that's hard as the whole place is stunning) Perfect for kids and families. Great walks. Great fun by the river!

Such a beautiful spot on Dartmoor. Great for families and hikers. Lots of animals and wildlife around and gorgeous riverside spots to stop for lunch. We walked from Postbridge which was nice, but I would recommend just parking at Bellever or starting from Bellever meadows car park instead of Postbridge for a bit more of a forest walk.

This is my favourite place for a picnic. Beautiful setting, relaxing and tranquil. Also great for children if they like a paddle. There is a public toilet here and sometimes a mobile tea/coffee van. They now charge for parking.
Leanda — Google review
Really beautiful place for a short walk by the river or a picnic. We came for a walk through the forest but we didn’t really find that the forest walks were that enjoyable it was more just walking up a track rather than through the forest. Maybe we didn’t get far enough in. But, the area by the river is just beautiful, we should have brought a picnic and spent more time in this area. Really good facilities in that there are loos and a little coffee trailer.

Such a beautiful spot. Lovely place to visit with family as a couple of on your own . Toilets on site. Good parking, don't forget to pay. No BBQs allowed so take a picnic.

The place is an exceptional beauty queen with eye catching views. As well as it gives scenic views over pine trees and the lake side views. It's easy to spend a day there with family and friends.

I went to Bellever forest today with my family, 3 under 12s, and they loved it. Lovely views, nice and quiet, especially when the horses came up very close. There are toilets, which were nice and clean, card payment for the parking made it easy. Just be careful, as I almost stood on an adder, I didn't know what sort it was until I came home and Googled it. Well worth a visit.

Becky Falls, located in Newton Abbot, is a stunning ancient valley that has been a popular attraction for over a century. The site offers indoor theater shows, animal attractions, feeding sessions, children's crafts, and a reptile center. While the woodland walks are not wheelchair accessible, the petting zoo area, indoor theater, animal nursery, and children's craft area are all wheelchair-friendly. Additionally, there are accessible toilets and baby changing facilities available.
Beautiful place to visit but you need to be fit and able to climb, not suitable for people with mobility problems

The staff is not friendly. They won't let you if you come at 4pm even at summer time. National park of publick use and someone charges you to visit a waterfalls!!!! Must waste one visit first to find out you can't buy tickets at the spot. You must buy tickets online first.

Nestled in the charming town of Lydford, Devon, is the historic Lydford Castle. The original castle was constructed after the Norman Conquest in 1068 but was abandoned by the mid-12th century. A second castle was built around 1195 amid socio-political turmoil. By the 19th century, it had fallen into disrepair and was left deserted. Managed by English Heritage, this site served as a prison with a fearsome reputation.
A great old castle ruin that is actually surprising how much of it remains. Easy access and just a few steps up inside. Free to the public and an easy walk into the little village and great views over the adjacent St Petrocs church. We noticed the Stonemason had added a stone 'candle' to the blockwork, a nice touch - shown in my last photo.

Remains of a 12th Century castle / jail under the English Heritage watch. Free parking nearby and free entry. Not much to look at but good for a quick stop and a few pics. Grounds are well kept too.

Castle ruins in the town. Free entry. Undergoing some repairs right now. The castle, dating back to the 12th century, was originally a defensive structure overlooking the River Teme.

Nice old medieval castle unfortunately it hasn't been well looked after. They have finally started by installing temp fencing around the stairs case & platform. too bad it wasn't soon enough. Worth the visit to see the old castle.

A really lovely village and the Castle (prison really) is very creepy. In a good way. Unfortunately the stairs down to the bottom were closed when we went in August 2022. A great visit though.

Beautiful castle full of history you can go inside it's free and there's loads of old windows and doorways etc and a stairway just inside the entrance that you can walk up and look down on everything. There is a pub next door and also a very old lovely looking church to the other side which is worth a look around

Nature preserve
Wistman's Wood is a captivating open space and walking spot, characterized by ancient moss-covered trees, granite boulders, and an otherworldly atmosphere. The Wistmans Wood Walk offers a delightful riverside stroll along the West Dart River, leading through an expanse of centuries-old forest. This trail provides stunning views of the moorland landscape and allows visitors to immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of Dartmoor National Park.
Parking up the car at Princetown we expected a walk of around 15 minutes. In reality it was more like 30+ minutes. But as with any experience the journey is just as important as the destination. The walk to the woods was very enjoyable. There are stretches of straight flat paths but there are also parts where you have to pick your way through a fair few stones and rocks similar to a coastal walk. All part of the fun. There are also plenty of sheep to say hi to (dog walkers should keep their dogs on a lead). On arrival the wood does not disappoint. It is small and due to its protected status you are requested to walk around, rather than through it. However, there are some great photo opportunities. Take some water with you, as on a warm day it can be a little tiring. Walking shoes would be better than trainers. The phone signal was ok. Treat this as a pilgrimage and your soul will soar.
Paul G — Google review
Very tranquil. I'd recommend to walk just past the woods to a meditation stone for the best experience. Also, take a thermos of hot tea and a warm coat. It the wind can be a bit chilling and there's no cover. Also, due to the distance to the wood, use the bathroom before hand. It can take 30-40 mins to walk back to the pub. Busy earlier in the day and afternoon. Quiet if you go towards the end of the day closer to sunset. Just make sure you time it right so you're not out there at night. Parking is very limited by the gate, but I think you can park by the pub if you get a drink.
Jozef G — Google review
If you’re going to Wistman’s Wood, you should be expecting that you haven’t been able to actually enter the forest for a long time. It’s ancient and needs ongoing preservation because of people not respecting the basic rule of “don’t wander from the paths near the forest”. It is a wonderful sight, even from the edges and the surrounding area is brilliant for hiking in sunny weather. The walk up to Wistman’s Wood takes around 15-30 minutes depending on your mobility, the trail is bumpy but manageable if you are an older individual, but do take care as there are a few places where you can lose your footing.
Ebonheart_ S — Google review
Went to Wistman’s Wood last weekend with our two dogs. We parked at Two Bridges Hotel which cost £5 to park (pay at reception). Then we walked to Wistman’s Wood. You will need to walk the car park and across the road and walk towards the woods. It’s quite obvious which way to go, but if you are not sure, ask at reception whilst you pay for parking. There is free parking opposite the hotel but it could be busy on nice weather days. The walk is a little rocky, if it’s wet you will definitely need wellies or good walking boots. After walking for about 15/20 mins you will arrive at Wistman’s Wood. It is very special, google it! Check the history, it’s rather enchanting. This time we discussed to continue walking past the wood and see if we could get round to the other side of the valley. This ended up extending the walk by about 2 hours and we had to cross a river. I think we may have gone the shortcut which ended up being a long cut. I think possibly if you walked on to the nearby tor there may be an easier way round. However, it was an adventure and walking back the other side of the valley was amazing. You walk along next to a man made stream and then through an enchanted wood (see pics) the woods are beautiful, covered in moss. You can walk circular and you will end back up at the two bridge hotel if you follow the river back after walking alongside the stream. It’s a lovely walk and if you have dogs they will love it! Watch out for cows, they might be around but as long as you keep out their way they will keep out of yours. Pop your dogs on a lead if you see any. Can’t wait to go back.
Matt V — Google review
This place will always hold a special place in my heart. There’s a mystical beauty here that feels timeless, and it’s wonderful to see steps being taken to protect it. A truly enchanting spot—well worth a visit, but tread with care.
Kim B — Google review
What an amazing place. Technically it’s a rainforest because it gets more than 2000mm rain/year. It’s made from twisted old dwarfed oak trees, rare moss and lichens and boulders. You’re told not to enter the forest but to view from the edge so as not to harm the delicate habitat. It’s possibly the last remaining piece of original post-glacial woodland in the UK.
Chris G — Google review
Finally visited this magical place and was not disappointed. Went early (05.40hrs) on a Saturday and had the place to myself. Parked in the small but free car park. Footwear with good grip and ankle support is recommended as the walk takes you across rocks and uneven ground. Be aware the woods are on fairly steep ground. Abide by the signs and enjoy!

I'd booked the high ropes and archery as a fun family experience whilst on holiday. Loved the archery, great tutoring by Job. The high ropes were fantastic but terrifying for me. I knew I was anxious but nothing quite prepared me for how anxious I was. The kids happily skipped through leaving me and my husband to be coaxed through again by fantastic instructor Job. I honestly thought I was going back or getting down by obstacle 2 but gentle coaxing and literally holding my hand as I wept I got there in the end! Fantastic experience, glad to have got down and ticked off my bucket list!

Superb place for kids to go and challenge themselves. Not overly expensive and plenty of free stuff to walk round after. Staff were great with kids and supported those who were frightened. It loses one star for paying to park. Someone else sets up a business plan, and North Devon Council decide to cash in too. I think tourists pump enough into your economy, you greedy b.......

I decided to push myself out of my comfort zone while on holiday so I booked the tree surfers course. When we arrived our booking wasn't on the system so we had to wait for the manager to arrive despite having proof of our booking on email. Once the manager arrived I think it was Will (apologies if I have your name wrong but you ways amazing) popped on a harness and took us to the course, made sure we were safe and did some safety briefing with us. The course was really challenging and more scary due to the rain but we were supported throughout, I was terrified on the final obstacle and really didn't want to go across it but Will came up and was really reassuring and I did it. I was so proud of myself. Hurt so much the next day. Well worth it.

Went today with my 6 year old and we had the best time. We had Drew help us and show us what to do and they were amazing. Very reassuring for my daughter and myself. They also spent the whole time just chatting away to us and made it such a good experience. Highly recommended

We were a group of six with two girls ages 12 and 14, and we truly had no idea what to expect from TreeSurfing experience. When we got to the park we received all the equipment and had a very brief instructions' session on how to use it while navigating between tree tops! At first we were so frightened by the hight and challenges set out, that none of us believed we would finish all three challenges. Yet, it was such an intense feeling of achievement and satisfaction that we not only completed all the challenges but also went for a few jumps on the zipline, which was amazing! The only comment would be to take your time to familiarise with the equipment and ask the instructor to either come with you to help with the tricky parts or ask them to map out the challenges for you so you are more prepared to cope with them.

A great day out for the family, the older ones really enjoyed the bigger course, and myself and my little boy really enjoyed the junior course. The instructors are amazing there. Abi who was on the junior one was so patient and encouraging with my boy, he started off scared and came away happy and confident and had an amazing day out thanks to Abi. Would highly recommend.

Imagine leading your very own llama or alpaca on a guided hike, where you can choose from walks lasting anywhere from two hours to half a day. Each adventure includes a charming homemade picnic break, allowing you to soak in the breathtaking views while enjoying delicious refreshments. The experience is not just about the animals; knowledgeable guides provide fascinating insights into Dartmoor's rich history and natural beauty.
We experienced the Dartmoor Llama Walk today and it was amazing. We were lucky with the weather, and although still a bit chilly, the rain held off to reveal the amazing views that Dartmoor had to offer. The guide was very knowledgeable of the location and offered an in depth historic look into the area. The llamas were very amusing and we're very easy to handle. Very well behaved too. Would highly recommend if in the area and looking for a relaxing/fun activity.

Amazing experience!!! We did a short walk with one Llama (Bella) and one Alpaca (Logan) and had the absolute best time, even with the typical English “summer” weather of wind/rain. The walk was 2hrs and included tea/coffee and a cake (delicious) Diane and Steve are great hosts, very knowledgeable about their animals as well as the local surrounding area. Lots of info given on history and both were really pleasant to yap to on the way around. The animals were gorgeous and very well looked after and cared for. Overall a really great experience and would thoroughly recommend!! We will 100% be booking again!

This was our absolute favourite activity of our holiday, we enjoyed it immensely. Steve and Diane were fantastic hosts and guides, we loved all the history and stories they told us. The llamas were so sweet and gentle, and it was so fun and satisfying to walk them along, and sometimes be walked BY them if they spotted a hawthorn in the distance! We are definitely doing it again on our next holiday to the area.

What an amazing experience! I booked a hot chocolate walk with as a surprise for my partner, and it couldn't have been better! (Well maybe the rain could have been blown away, but what do you expect in December? haha). When we arrived, we were given some health and safety training, and invited to brush the llama's coats as well as an unexpected surprise. Their customer service is absolutely excellent. After that, we were paired up with our llamas. I had Marlia, the lead llama, and she was a girl after my own heart - stopping for every snack she could see! She also let me have a cuddle and some pictures. My partner walked Tilly, who was absolutely the sweetest and fluffiest girl. She liked to have a fuss and also bee-lined for the snacks. Along the walk, Steve and Diane educated us on Dartmoor's history and answered a constant stream of questions from us about Dartmoor and llamas. Steve and Diane were so lovely and approachable, no question was too much or too silly, they'd heard it all before! They were even able to accomodate us being vegan and provided vegan hot chocolate and a vegan brownie. I am absolytely dying to go again and have been raving about it to all my friends.

Our Llama walk was amazing, so well organised. We recieved all safety and information about the Llamas and Alpacas before we set out. We walked at a happy and enjoyable pace meeting everyone's needs. Steve and Diane could not have been better hosts.

What a fantastic day we had yesterday (29/03/2025) Llama trekking on Dartmoor. A belated 50th Birthday present for our mate Jo. Unfortunately it had to be cancelled in December due to unforseen circumstances but Scarlet was happy to put our booking on hold untill we could rearrange. Fortunately we had a beautiful day and 3 gorgeous Llamas, Marlia Tilly and Willow. We did a beautiful walk and stopped for tea and cake in the most picturesque spot. We had a little photo shoot with the Llamas before walking back through the woods. Jo couldn't stop smiling all the way round and enjoyed every moment. Thank you so much Scarlet and your husband for a fantastic day which none of us will ever forget. Totally recommend this for a gift for someone.

Pennywell Farm, located near Buckfastleigh in South Devon, is a family-friendly farm attraction offering a wide range of activities and experiences for visitors. The farm is home to various animals including miniature pigs, lambs, rabbits, guinea pigs, donkeys, ponies, cattle, alpacas, deer, ferrets, tortoises and hedgehogs. Visitors can engage in hands-on activities such as feeding the animals and milking goats.
I took my 18 month old daughter to pennywell farm and she absolutely loved it. There's activities every 30 minutes, favourites of my daughters were the bottle feeding of baby goats and the goat walking. There are lots of animals to walk around and meet, and you can buy some animal feed and can feed certain animals too. They are all clearly sign posted which animals you can and can't feed. My daughter loved feeding the sheep and goats, and meeting the ponies in their paddocks. The little train ride was good fun too! There are plenty of play areas, including indoor bouncy castles and a toddler area outside. Both were a hit with my daughter. The bubble and bop area was really good fun too. There's another big outdoor play area, but that's for older children, but it looked really good and I will definitely bring my daughter back when she's bigger. The staff were all really friendly. We had a hot chocolate and sandwich from one of the cafes whilst we were there. They were a bit expensive, but that's expected at places like this.

A truly magical visit to Pennywall Farm! We absolutely loved our time here and honestly don’t know where to start—it was just amazing. Spending time with the animals, feeding and cuddling them, was so refreshing not only for the kids but for us as parents too. My husband definitely enjoyed dance with piggy mascot as well as our kids did. The atmosphere is incredibly warm and welcoming. Everyone we met was kind and helpful. A special mention to Chris, the owner—we think he’s retired now—but he still shares stories about the farm with such pride and joy. He was genuinely inspiring. Even though the farm was busy, there were no queues for anything, which made the whole experience relaxed and enjoyable. Highly recommend this place for families with children, and honestly, for any adults who just want to reconnect with animals and nature. You can really take your time here—stroke, feed, cuddle—it’s just such a wholesome, lovely experience. We’ll definitely be back!

We went to the date night at Pennywell Farm last night and it was amazing! The staff were so lovely and friendly and the animals are so well looked after and adorable! Great atmosphere. Thank you SO much ❤️

Absolutely brilliant place to visit! We found Pennywell farm when searching for somewhere to visit en route to our holiday park. Even on a wet Monday we still had a fantastic time. There’s plenty of animals to feed in the dry. Feed was available to purchase at the entrance/shop. The goats will definitely make you giggle. From the incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable staff giving talks, to holding a piglet. Both children aged 2yrs old were fully engaged and made to feel welcomed by staff. There’s also plenty of hand washing stations located around the site. The views from the top of the viewing tower give you a 360 panorama of picturesque Scenery which all compliment its truly beautiful location. We loved it so much we returned on the Friday, on our way home from our holiday. If you have the opportunity to pay Pennywell farm a visit it’s well worth it! Thank you to the team at Pennywell farm for building something truly beautiful for many generations to enjoy and making us feel so welcomed!

This was a fantastic day out from start to finish. I suggest booking online as they are really busy at peak times. There is a large barn where children can cuddle all sorts of animals: mice, rabbits, baby goats and miniature pigs. You have plenty of time in there and can return later in the day. You can bring your own blanket or buy a small one at the farm entrance for £3. So many activities, see the photo showing then all. Pig racing was really fun to watch. There's a tractor ride, a small train, pond dipping , go karts and so much more. Highly recommend this place. The goat feeding was funny to see as the children all line up around an enclosure fencing with the bottles ready and the goats are let out to excitedly find a bottle to feed from. You can buy animal food to feed the alpaca, deer, goats etc. Plenty of food stalls with a good range of food and drinks. Not too bad prices for an attraction. There is a fire pit so you can buy marshmallows on sticks to toast there. There is free mini golf to play, nice climbing structures and a maze too. Make sure to go for the whole day as you need it to do everything. We got a discount code that allowed us to visit again within a week.

Absolutely wonderful experience. We came to visit as a way of celebrating our 9th wedding anniversary. Grounds are well kept and animals well loved. Every member of staff was smiling and it was obvious they enjoyed working there, they had a genuine friendly manner. Mark led the activities all day and he had just the right amount of enthusiasm whilst not being annoying. Our almost 2 year old had a great day, not sure if we would be happy to pay an extra near £20 for him once he turns 2 though, but it was definitely worth the price paid for 2 adults. If you can afford it then make sure you go as it’s a great day out!

We just had the most amazing day at Pennywell Farm. There’s no shortage of exciting activities to do. Our favourite experience had to be having cuddles with the animals! The team were incredibly helpful and enthusiastic and really contributed to our overall enjoyment during the day. Especially Lucy, who was super friendly and helpful, and amazing with the kids, and clearly has a love for all the animals- she went above and beyond throughout the entire day. As well as Evie who was in the pet cuddling area, she was attentive and friendly. Always prepared to ensure that everyone was happy and had a fair experience with the animals!

Buckland Abbey, a centuries-old abbey with an estate museum and gardens, is nestled among woodlands with marked trails. Founded as a Cistercian monastery in the 13th century, it was acquired by Sir Francis Drake after being bought from King Henry VIII. The property boasts highlights such as Drake's Drum, exquisite modelled ceilings, the Great Barn, fine Elizabethan gardens and woodland walks.
Really loved this National Trust property, probably my favourite, actually. Loved reading about Sir Francis Drake, it was fascinating. The grounds are lovely, very natural, and calm. There are some nice walks too, although we didn't have time to try them. Great cafe and some courtyard outdoor seating. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

A Must-Visit National Trust Gem! Buckland Abbey is an absolute treasure — easily one of my favourite National Trust sites to date. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed by friendly and knowledgeable staff who clearly have a deep passion for the place and its incredible history. The highlight for many will be the original Rembrandt self-portrait, which is genuinely awe-inspiring to see in person. But there’s so much more to enjoy — the architecture of the Abbey itself is stunning, with layers of history that transport you back through the centuries, from its monastic beginnings to its connection with Sir Francis Drake. The tithe barn is an architectural marvel and really sets the tone for how well-preserved and presented the whole site is. Outside, the gardens are immaculate, full of colour and variety — especially the roses and well-labelled plants which were in full bloom during our visit. A real haven for plant lovers. We also stopped for a coffee and slice of cake in the café and were not disappointed — excellent quality and a perfect way to round off the visit. This place has it all: art, history, architecture, beautiful gardens, and a warm welcome. Whether you’re a history buff, art lover, or just looking for a peaceful day out in the countryside, Buckland Abbey is a solid 10/10. Highly recommended.

This National Trust location is lovely and quiet. Car parking is free and it's a short downhill walk to the Abbey. There is disability parking closer to the entrance and toilets at the entrance too. I had no idea Sir Francis Drake had owned this place so it was a really interesting place to see. For those interested in art, there is a genuine self portrait of Rembrandt which will sadly be exhibited elsewhere for a while, luckily we saw this on its last day at Buckland. The story of the Rembrandt is interesting as it was sold to the National Trust from a local family wanting to pay off taxes and the family chose the from their own collection their most dislikes pictures, the Rembrandt being one of them. The family had been completely unaware of the significance of this picture as apparently the husband of the family had bought it without acknowledging it's value to his wife. Many years later the National Trust decided to have the picture checked for authenticity, when clarification eventually arrived it became apparent that this was a genuine self portrait from Rembrandt himself. As I said the staff at this location are very knowledgeable. There are fabulous grounds to walk around and a walled garden which is full of great produce. As with all National Trust locations there is a cafe serving all the regular food and drinks and the staff throughout the site are very knowledgeable and polite. Always a worthwhile visit 👍🏻

A lovely place to visit on a sunny day! Friendly staff everywhere and nice facilities. We had a savoury tea before heading off on the red route for a walk. The blue route is currently closed due to storm damage. It’s just so peaceful and relaxing here and not too far out of Plymouth.

What a wonderful place to visit, it is part of the National trust. It is steeped in History with beautiful gardens to compliment the Abbey and its surrounding buildings. There is disabled access in some areas. On site cafe and toilets within. Disable toilets also. Dogs are welcome but not inside the buildings. Service dogs are aloud inside, but always ask any of the super volunteers who can give you more information.

It was truly wonderful to experience such knowledgeable historical guides. The information they shared was incredibly enriching and painted a vivid picture of the past. The entire experience was made even more stunning by the breathtaking views. I extend my gratitude for such a well-crafted presentation of history. Overall, it was a fantastic day!

Interesting and well stewarded N.T. Attractive buildings and immediate formal gardens, plus extensive estate walks. Link to Sir Francis Drake makes it more special. Good teas. Several interesting popup shops.

Buckland Abbey is without doubt one of this country’s greatest national hero’s home. Sir Francis Drake, global explorer, and legal privateer of Spanish ships and colonies, Admiral of Royal Navy and defender of the nation. This Abbey and Drakes home is a great day out, and excellent for teaching some history of the development of both Great Britain and the early Royal Navy.

Becky Falls Ancient Woodland Park is a picturesque destination that has captivated visitors for over a century. Nestled within ancient oakwoods, the park offers enchanting walking paths, boulder scrambling, and serene picnic areas. Families can enjoy encounters with various animals at the petting zoo, including rabbits, guinea pigs, Shetland ponies, and goats. The indoor theatre showcases an array of creatures from tarantulas to rescued birds of prey.
The number 1 activity from my children's perspective, during our visit to Torbay. They loved the trails, they especially loved the waterfalls and the mini zoo is an extra (although I personally felt the macaw needed a friend, it looks very lonely). Dog loved it too, will definitely go back. I know I went as a child, so it's great to have a beautiful spot for generations to keep enjoying.

We visited during the half term school holidays. We arrived at around 11:30am and was on site for around 3 1/2 hours. On arrival you can pay at the gate or can pre book online. Children under 4 go free. There is a short walk to the main entrance where you are welcomed by a picknick area which has a small cafe and girt shop. There is a selection of ice-cream, ice lollies, drinks, chips. There is small selection of animals you can feed such as goats and meerkat. Please be aware that you need to book and pay extra for the meet the keeper meerkat feeding experience. There is also a small building that has snake's, stick insects, cockroaches and a tarantula. There are 3 different trials to walk. The blue one is quick and easy to navigate through the woodlands. However, the red and purple trails are quite steep with different types of terrain. This is not suitable for any type of pushchair or wheelchairs. The ground can be wet and muddy, so decent footwear is advised. If you want to walk all three trails, you will need between 2-3 hours depending on your speed and skill. You can borrow a baby carrier if you require which is free of charge. The cafe and bench area did become quite busy at around 1pm. Overall, the visit was quite nice with very nice views of the water fall and stream that runs down.
Daniel B — Google review
Nice trial with animals in beginning. Nice for kids. You 3 options of trial.10mins, 30mins or 45mins. Anyone can go don't need extra shoes. In entrance you need to pay per adult 13.50 including car park.
Hossangui — Google review
Absolute little gem this one. They have 3 routes to walk around. Blue which is rather easy and for the kids. Then red and purple which show you the water falls. You need good grippy shoes on. We did all routes. And the people route is the hardest but you get some awesome views. Be prepared to have to scramble up some rocky surfaces so you need a bit of fitness for this. You are at times climbing up steep rocky areas but it is so much fun. Red Route a little easier but still some climbs to do. Then you have a great cafe and also animals to look around. Really really fun.
Rob H — Google review
One of the most amazing places to go in England, it is totally untouched beauty. Different trails to follow, nice coffee shop, easy to park. You can easily spend a day in there. I went middle of August and the weather was lovely.
Alexander R — Google review
An absolute beauty! I can strongly recommend it! We walked the basic route first, but our 12yr old daughter and myself were itching to climb some rocks and the waterfall, so took part of the red route too. Was so worth it. I do recommend outdoor trainers though! (I didn't have one as was last minute idea). Nice animals (meercats, macaw, goats, bunnies, chickens, skunk, owl) to see too and kids can feed them (need to purchase voucher). Food, ice cream, drinks in the caffee. The weather was a mix, but plenty of shades too on a sunny day if required. The woodland and the rocks are so tranquil and gives so much joy to young ones and older ones. If you are a bit more fragile, there is a route for that too. It's a must place to visit. 🤗
Katalin H — Google review
Visited not realising it was a pay for attraction, for the walk only I wouldn’t say its worth the entry fee but if you are a family the small zoo, shop and cafe and other activities probably make it worth the entry fee. The walk is good and the falls are interesting. The purple route is tough so take their advice and only do if fit and mobile.
Adrian B — Google review
A great outdoor activity with splendid walk among humongous rocks and a cute little animal encounter with goats, rabbits, skunks( all safe)) , a giant blue macaw. There is a place to park as well as have something to eat.

Bodies of Water
Burrator Reservoir, located in Dartmoor National Park, was the subject of a controversial proposal in 1995 to close surrounding roads and build a large car park. However, this plan was overwhelmingly rejected by the local community. The reservoir offers a picturesque two-hour walking route featuring old bridges, granite walls, country lanes, moorlands, woodlands, and an impressive dam wall.
Burrator Reservoir Walk 🌿 Just a 25-minute drive from Plymouth, Burrator Reservoir is a perfect spot for a weekend family adventure or a summer escape into nature. Follow the peaceful path around the edge of Burrator Reservoir. Explore the beauty of Dartmoor with woodland paths, historic ruins, and wildlife along the way. Whether you're walking, cycling, or just enjoying the fresh air, this spot is a perfect escape into nature! Free car parking and toilet facilities available on site. 🍦 While an ice-cream van is available, there are no other food options around so don’t forget your picnic! Note : Mobile coverage can be limited around certain parts of the reservoir. Highly recommended !
Maria S — Google review
A short drive over the moor from Tavistock brings you over to the Burrator quarry and further along to the Burrator Reservoir, there are quite a few parking spaces but it looks like it could get quite busy at peak times. We were fortunate it was quiet, an ice cream van sat in a prime spot so we had to have a 99 cone @£3.50 a piece to enjoy whilst wandering and snapping a few pics.
Mister I — Google review
We visited Burrator Reservoir on a free day and walked the trail from Yelverton. The walk goes through grassy fields with sheep and goats, a small village, woodland, and a few little waterfalls. The view from the reservoir is nice, and I had ducks and geese for company, which was lovely. It’s a calm and simple walk—nothing too special, but a decent way to spend some free time.

Lovely area for a walk. We stuck to the tarmac path and did the loop around (about 4miles) Easy walking for all abilities. Lots of wildlife and pretty places. 2 ice cream vans here but they only take cash. Parking is free and you can park near the dam alongside the road but it does get busy during peak season.

Beautiful walk around Burrator dam in the morning sun. Plenty of birds in song and some on the lake. A few cars and cyclists, but plenty of space to chat with a friend. Free parking at the dam and a few car parks are placed at the opposite end too.

The center offers pony rides and pony care sessions for kids as well as the opportunity to pet and groom the animals. Additionally, guests can witness entertaining shows featuring amateur actors such as the popular Unicorn show.
What a cracking little place!!! Took my little boy here! I'm not sure who enjoyed it more! Him or me 😁!! There's play areas indoors and out! There's a huge paddock where you can walk freely around the ponies and donkeys! They're very sweet and they all look very well looked after. They have two American Mammoth Donkeys which I didn't even know were a thing among other animals. They even have Unicorns there!!! There's lots of activities, for the size of it there's surprisingly a lot to see and do including lovely little nature walks to the pond with the ducks and walking/grooming/riding the ponies. There's of course a gift shop and a tea room! The food was lovely and reasonably priced although I wasn't keen on the fact they leave food lying on the floor until the end of day 😬 The only thing I would say is don't use the toilets if you're afraid of spiders because there are some Biiiiigggg 8 legged creatures in there!! Overall though, definitely a great trip out!!

Amazing place to visit with kids or a couple who fancys a day out. Massive play areas, 5 massive trampolines, full day of free of activities. You can stroke every animal in there and walk through the pony fields, amazing to get up close. Good choice of ice creams and cafe does the usual food, prices were average. Definitely worth a visit 👍.

This was our 1st visit our 11 month old granddaughter loved seeing all the animals although the mammoth donkeys were definitely her favourite we spent 4 hours here and could definitely off stayed longer. The cafe portion sizes were very generous and plenty of high chairs available. We are now getting season tickets
Michelle C — Google review
Had such a nice time here and I would definitely go back. We took our toddler and she was able to guide a small pony around a little paddock. It may not seem like a lot but it was a magical experience for her, she's never done anything else like it. They even put a little riding helmet on her. I was really impressed with the way the whole place was run, so much to see and do, you could easily spend an entire day here with a kid a bit older than ours. We got there a bit late in the day and I feel like it would have been better to go in the morning, to see all the activities. The car park is quite large and the farm is pushchair and wheelchair friendly.

Absolutely loved this place! It's so much bigger than I thought it would be. There's all kinds of horses, donkeys and ponies but also rabbits, bugs, mice, rats, ducks, turkeys and more besides! It's a bit of a tardis, doesn't appear huge but the more you adventure and follow the paths, the more you find. My very nearly 3 year old absolutely loved it. Highlight of our Devon holiday and we'll worth a visit!
Kayleigh W — Google review
The miniature pony centre is based in Dartmoor, Devon. A great place to bring the family to meet and greet ponies, horses and other farm animals. Kids can have a go riding and there is a large outdoor play area as well as a small indoor soft play area for younger kids. The cafe served lovely lunches as well as cream teas. There is a kids menu including sandwiches and jacket potatoes. Kids will love getting up close to the many miniature ponies on site... Not to mention the unicorns!!!

Had a lovely day out here .Lots to do and see . Activities put on through the day for all to join in . Great play areas for the children. Restaurant . lovely staff .Gift shop has good range of items. Prices very good . Grandson picked out a tractor and trailer which was only £6 a good quality one very happy boy ☺️

We went to the miniature pony centre in the afternoon. The Pony ride is good. There is an indoor area you can go in to touch donkeys or you can walk to the outdoor space to see ponies. Donkeys and ponies are cute and friendly. The last program of the day is “horse herding” and it’s an unique experience. Staffs are friendly. It’s great we didn’t miss this place while we were in Devon.

Great few hours spent here today. Special thanks to Pete for the engaging conversation with my inquisitive daughters about the owls. You can see that they are well cared for, and the bond they have with the handler is amazing to see. All the staff were very friendly and helpful too. Very hands-on, and you are able to get up close to most of the animals. My kids also loved the petting of the guinea pigs and rabbits very much! Would definitely come back again if we are in the area.

DO NOT FOLLOW GOOGLE MAPS DIRECTIONS!!! Took us to completely the wrong place. When we arrived after a nice little walk to the farm, over the river and through the steam train station, the prices weren't too bad and there was a nice variety of animals, food bag for £1 to feed the animals, some of which you can get into the pens with, guinea pigs too hold. Very clean lots of sinks and sanitizer. Nice Cafe with lots of seating. Only reason for 4 star was due to the lack of signage to help find the place and overall it's a fairly small place, you can get around it quite quickly, could maybe do with a play area for kids to break the time up a bit.

Really lovely place, much bigger than we expected well worth a few hours visit. Staff were very helpful. Nice coffee shop on site. Toilets are located on the Steam railway platform adjacent to this attraction.

This is a lovely little zoo. The staff are very helpful and took a long time showing the owls to my daughters, who were captivated. Then, they also helped them pet guinea pigs. We spent about 3 hours there in total, so the entry fee of less than £10 a person is good value. Nice cafe, too, albeit with a limited menu.

Can’t recommend this riding stables enough! Brilliant for both experienced and non experienced riders. The views on the moors were absolutely gorgeous, the horses were all lovely and obviously well looked after. Our guides (I think their names were Casey and Kelsey?) were so friendly and helpful, if you didn’t have the right shoes, slacks or coats it was all provided along with the helmets. It was well worth what we paid and I will definitely be back to this stables on my next Devon holiday

Such a fantastic experience from start to finish. A random activity booked for myself and my friend. I am a newbie and my friend has had a few lessons prior. We were warmly greeted, asked what our experience has been with riding and helped with getting kitted up. The girls who took us around Dartmoor were kind and compassionate and clearly loved what they do. Really really enjoyable time, felt safe and I even learnt how to trot! We were in small groups so we were able to ask questions. If you are on the fence, choose these guys! You won’t regret it.

Fantastic for absolute beginners! My partner and I have never ridden before. I took him for a birthday experience. We were warmly greeted. Our horses were calm and reliable. Our guide was knowledgeable and happy to answer all our questions. There were many! We were led for most of the time and were taught how to use the reigns to steer and stop our horses, riding independently for a short distance back to the stables. We were surprised at how easy it was. We highly recommend Cholwell. Being on horseback is a fantastic way to see the moors, too. Thank you for a great experience 🙏🏻

I could go every day! Such a beautiful location, great horses and really friendly staff. They must have a lot of visitors and somehow manage to stay classy and friendly. Came with a very chatty 8 year old daughter, we rode together on really lovely calm horses and they couldn’t have been more friendly and accommodating. Can’t praise or thank them enough, way cheaper than buying a horse. Can’t wait for our next ride

I had a wonderful walking ride with my 11-year-old-son who is experienced in horseback riding while I‘m a novice. My husband and other son walked with us, that was quite a hike. But they also enjoyed the great landscape and took pictures. The guide was very nice and took care of every individual (there was another mom with her 5-year-old son). The horses were great, it was a wonderful experience!

Myself and my daughter (10 years old) had the best time riding over the moors. It was my daughter's first time riding a horse, so she was very nervous but the lovely instructor who took us was really kind, patient & went at her pace, and she ended up loving it :) The scenery was stunning & the horses were really calm and well-behaved. Would recommend!

Rode with my 2 children at Shilstone Rocks, it was amazing! We were greeted cheerfully, process explained, could borrow hats and boots if needed, then we were assessed for safety in the school before going up on the moor on 3 lovely ponies. The moor riding was brilliant, great scenery and views, the heather and gorse gorgeous colours! Our ride was just us 3 which was a huge treat, and all fun but super safe, no mum anxiety! The ponies were well behaved and in great condition, happy to go out. I went riding there 30 years ago and it’s every bit as good now, such a treat to be able to experience the same with my kids. 100% recommend!

I did a one hour hack when visiting the area. I lucked out when other people were a no show so was just me and the guide, who was friendly and chatty. The school is just down the lane from the open moor and we had a walk, trot, canter - such a fabulous experience. A great location. They verified riding ability in the school before the hack, which was reassuring that they take rider safety seriously. The horse I rode was steady and forward, no reactivity to cows, traffic or quad bikes, clearly very used to hacking out. I’ll definitely be back. Only thing is that with a lack of website it can be hard to get in touch and confirm bookings - so persevere!

Rang up and booked a 1hr hack for my 2 kids 9 and 6, beginner riders who had done only 1 session before now. The person from Shilstone Rocks was amazing. She got the kids settled on the horses and walked with them for the ride, guiding the horses. A couple of more experienced riders came along too, a kid and a grown up and their horses were not led. It was really really good, definitely recommend. It's so hard to find pony trek where you don't need to have experience of riding already. This setting was lovely on Dartmoor, part road and part on the moors. Hooray and thanks so much 🐴🐴

Great place for dog walking. Living locally it's a regular outing. Parking charge is reasonable, cash or "paybyphone" app, the machine doesn't take cards. When the cafe is open it does drinks and snacks and the toilets are available. Other times there are miles of forest, nature's toilet. For kids there's the tree surfing and adventure stuff near the carpark. Check the web site for details.

Our first time visiting for the Halloween trail. Brilliant place. There is so much to do here. They also have tree surfing, which looked amazing. I tried to book online but had trouble. So I emailed and they replied swiftly and it was all sorted out. Recommend wearing wellies or boots as it was wet and muddy obviously! Didn't put anyone off as it was really busy. There's a small cafe. We called in on the way out. Very small menu, but decent cuppa. The best apple cake I have ever tasted. All 4 of us had something different and not one complaint. It was lovely. I have to give a massive shout out to the young girl who was serving in the cafe. It got busy very quickly and she was amazing. Very calm and polite. She managed the queue really well until someone was free to come and help. All the staff were great. Friendly and knowledgeable. Good couple of hours.

And when you are done with all that there is a nice cafe that does nice coffee and cakes and the kids or dogs can get a nice ice cream as well.

We started at the Tamar Trails centre sawmills car park, then walked towards blanchdown wood and up to mineral railway trail followed that all the way round back to where we started, about a 2hrs walk and just under 9km, lovely walk and scenery will go back, much enjoyed, and a well diserved cuppa tea at the centre.

Beautiful area and I can see much work been done here. Nice cafe and plenty of activities. We came for a bike ride, not a difficult trial but the signage needs to be improved as it's pretty hard to navigate. Full of mining history. Worth a visit if you are in the area.

Lovely walks, some challenging, some restful. Excellent views. Safe for Dogs to enjoy. After your walk, you have an option to rest up in a lovely cafe. Which serves drinks and good food or snacks. Carpark costs £2.50 for the day. There are also toilets which are always handy. You can also pay to go tree surfing if that is your thing.

Avon Dam Reservoir is a delightful destination for families and nature lovers alike, nestled in the scenic Dartmoor region. The well-paved paths along the Avon River make it an ideal spot for little ones on bikes or scooters, while also being accessible for pushchairs. Kids can enjoy climbing around and splashing in the shallow waters during summer months. Although parking can be limited, arriving early ensures you secure a spot to start your adventure.
One of my favourite walks around Devon, it's a tarmacked path up to the dam itself, so very accessible, the views are wonderful

A great place for a walk on your own, with your partner, with children, to walk the dog or for a short cycle. There is a free car park at the beginning of the walk with toilets and picnic benches. A beautiful area.

Stunning walk from car park Upto the dam of about 2miles running next to the Avon river car park has public toilets as well a must visit

Great walk for people with prams, wheelchairs or small kids on bikes. Park at Shipley Bridge and get a bacon sandwich from the Clipper coffee van if you're lucky then walk along the river. The walk is lined with rhodedendrons which weren't in bloom when we recently went but worth trying to catch them in the spring or earlier summer!

Beautiful place just off the A38. Incredible views from the top of the dam. Flat concrete all the way up too which is great for kids on bikes, wheelchairs etc. Lovely little coffee shack at the carpark serving hot drinks, hot food and snacks (takes card too). 😋

Paid £7.50 online for a day fishing license. No mention of the two mile hike from the car park to the reservoir. Won't be bothering with that again! Toilets were usable but obviously haven't been cleaned in a good long while. NIce picnic area adjacent to the car park. On the whole, I won't be going there again.

Spitchwick, located in Dartmoor, offers a delightful circular walk through the park, passing by serene rivers and historic estates with stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The area features calm sections of the River Dart suitable for swimming and natural pools formed by weirs. Accessing Spitchwick may require a short walk from New Bridge carpark due to limited phone signal for navigation.
Clear water and on a Sunday there weren't too many people about. Lots of wildlife which was nice but there were a few people starting BBQs and scorch marks all over the place which were a shame. The restrooms were dirty but convenient.
Lady D — Google review
Really beautiful part of Dartmoor, excellent views and places for swimming too in the river (take swim shoes if you do go in the water). Ideal for a picnic or a half-day out.
Dave P — Google review
This picnic area is beautiful. We struggled to find it at first as our phones had no signal and no 4g so we couldnt use google maps. We soon realised you have to walk under New Bridge and along the path or walk north along the road from New Bridge carpark and take the next right and follow the path down. Once we found Spitchwick, it's an open grass area along the river bank. One side of the river is deep and people were jumping in off the rocks and the other side is shallow. The children were happy catching small fish in their little nets all day in the shallows. We took our paddleboards and went up and down the river where it was calm. The carpark was £3 (CASH ONLY) all day.

Another visit to this gem of a place on Dartmoor. Worth the walk from Newbridge car park along the river. Some steep paths and trip hazards but go steady. Take a picnic and have a wild swim in the cool River Dart waters.

Amazing River! Deep enough to jump off rocks and is dog friendly! Fun for all the family, you will have to walk a little to find a safe spot for the little ones to get into the water because it’s a little rocky however once you have your spot you will not move for hours! Make sure to take river shoes to make your life easier!

Short walk along the riverside from the carpark is a beautiful stretch of river which is accessible and deep enough to swim in. Grassy area is convenient for a picnic too. Loved this place

Lovely place for a walk... When it isn't in the middle of summer. In summer it's just too busy, and they've blocked all parking apart from a pay and display area. There's no denying it's a beautiful area to go and see though.

Can get very busy on a hot weekend day. Car park at Newbridge get full very quickly. Best to arrive early mot in or late afternoon. The water is very refreshing and a real treat. Plenty of more quiet areas further up the river.

National Trust - Hembury and Holne Woods is a picturesque natural site in Buckfastleigh, Devon. The area offers a variety of trails suitable for both gentle walks and more challenging hikes. Visitors can easily access the woodland from Buckfast and Buckfastleigh, with ample parking available. The woods are home to diverse wildlife, including free-roaming Dartmoor ponies, dippers, and grey wagtails.
We found this place by accident and thought we would stop to give the dog a leg stretch. Turns out it was one of our favourite walks of our trip! The paths are well maintained down to the river and new paths have been formed where there has been erosion. The water is deep in places allowing dogs a really good swim. It was even deep enough for humans to swim too!

Just a gorgeous country walk, bit steep in places, but views worth a million. No seats to sit on, if you need a pew, or savor the scenery. Very popular with families, and dog walkers. Worth the drive out on any day.

Great place for a walk in the woods and alongside the river Dart. Some steep gradients in places. We went mid April and it was lovely to listen to a large variety of birds. Sat at the ruins of a fort and with only a small covering of leaves on the trees the views were pretty good! There is a bluebell wood that will be a carpet of blue in the next week or two!!

This short yet fulfilling circular trail begins at the visitor center along B3387 and leads adventurers on a steady climb to the iconic Haytor Rocks. As you traverse this scenic route, you'll pass by the remnants of Haytor Quarry, which was historically significant for its granite and tin extraction.
Great place for wild swimming. Only a short 15 min walk from the visitor centre. Easy access into the water, and pretty location. The wall up to Haytor is also worthwhile!

It's a tangible reminder of the region's industrial heritage. * Seeing the remnants of the quarrying operations is quite evocative. * Scenic Views: * Located near the iconic Haytor Rocks, the quarry offers stunning panoramic views of Dartmoor. A garden of Eden tucked away behind the rocks, a heaven for wildlife and we saw live leeches for the first time in our life. People were bathing in the basing, it was definitely an experience. We'll be back with a picnic next time, it's worth staying a while for the stillness and tranquility, and the millions of tadpoles and newts, and fish, and butterflies, and so much more!

It's absolutely beautiful here. It's not clear where it is so it's useful to use a map. There was people and dogs swimming and people having picnics, it was fairly busy but really lovely. We parked at the visitors centre but the next carpark along is just as easy.

Love this place. There’s about 20-30mm walk which is flat and easy. We walked with our 11 week baby. Whats at the end is worth all the steps you take. It’s free to enter. You can park your vehicles at the car park and walk.

The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, England is a modern art deco-style attraction that opened in 1998. It's the UK's largest aquarium and part of the Ocean Conservation Trust, focusing on research and conservation. The aquarium features a variety of marine life from Devon to the tropics, including fish, sharks, turtles, and jellyfish. Visitors can enjoy feeding sessions, an underwater tunnel experience, and a cafe with panoramic harbor views.
The most fantastic Aquarium I have ever been to which includes the largest fish tank in the UK. It even has a small sunken bi-plane within the tank, (which tells you how large we are talking here) The sharks, and massive sea turtle (called Friday) were incredible. I have not been to another aquarium in the UK that includes sharks! Staff have an incredible amount of knowledge about the animals in the aquarium all the way down to their behaviours and how each of them interact with the divers that feed them. At various points you get to see the divers go into the water. This is by far the largest and most impressive aquarium I have seen, if you are into your marine animals this opportunity is certainly not to be missed! Definitely check this place out if you are ever visiting Plymouth!

We visited this place with our 5 year old son and were a bit disappointed that extra attractions, like soft play, were unavailable. We enjoyed the big aquarium and watching the team of reaserchers at the lab. If you have an autistic child like we do I'll advice you to be there first in the morning as it becomes busy later on. The tickets can be used for the whole day which is fantastic as we didn't have a chance to see everything in our first round. Our son just runs like a Flash😆 Lovely, friendly staff. X

A great place to visit for young and old. You can spend a few hours just wandering around at your own pace looking at the vast array of fish, turtles and sharks. My children loved this place. This is my second time here and would definitely return for a third time.
A K — Google review
Lots of information and big fish. We took about an hour to go around, we did not read the information boards which could easily add another hour. There are a couple of places to sit and watch which is a pleasant way to spend some time. They offer a year's entry for the price of a day; £26 per adult, which is quite pricey if you only visit once. However visit again within the year and it becomes fantastic value!
Jason H — Google review
I have read the reviews before I went to this aquarium so I knew what to expect. To be honest, the staff are quite friendly and helpful, and I wish I could give it a higher point, but the fish tanks are too small, and the so-called biggest fish tank could have come with a bit more fish or more impressive fish. I think perhaps because the major visitors of this aquarium are kids and their families these days, they stick too many stickers with words and scientific facts on the wall, yet put too few fish to see. The best room is the room with the lecture, the curvy glass helps us to see the animals more clearly. The lecturer was very enthusiastic when she talked about sharks, rays, and the green turtle. I do not mind that they make the Aquarium more educational, but I hope they prioritize the fish rather than people. Whether bigger or smaller fish, they need more space to swim. For the size and the reputation of this museum, they could have done better.
Etheria H — Google review
So much too see. There was 2 school parties here when I went and they looked intrigued by the big tank while they were at a talk. I loved it,my daughter in law showed us the way luckily else I'd have been going in circles. Didn't see any seahorses which were there last time and the sharks were not that big but my fave were the mantas and stingrays. There were some really big starfish,a turtle and lots of strange looking fish and anemones. Got a years pass on buying entry tickets so will be returning soon.
Sar P — Google review
Excellent. You get to see so much. You can even go round again and again. The cafe has very limited seating, food looked good but seemed overpriced. Toilets are located throughout. Easy to get round with pushchair, lift however is very small. The view you get of the animals is amazing.
Clare R — Google review
Visited recently and this place truly blew me away. As the UK’s largest aquarium, it effortlessly lives up to the hype with its four themed zones: Plymouth Sound, Eddystone Reef, Atlantic Ocean, and Blue Planet; all packed with vibrant marine life and fascinating exhibits. The Atlantic Ocean exhibit is mind-blowing, housing a colossal 2.5-million-liter tank filled with sharks, rays, and tropical fish, viewed through thick acrylic walls that make you feel submerged. The Ocean Drifters jellyfish display in the Atlantic zone is also stunning; perfect for taking a moment to marvel. Kids (and grown-ups) will love the interactive corners; rock pool touch tanks, storytelling sessions, behind-the-scenes tours, and crafts that bring education to life with fun. I especially appreciated the thoughtful accessibility touches like lowered viewing panels, stools for young visitors, and staff who are knowledgeable and welcoming. Extra perks: a café with harbour views, a lovely on-site gift shop, and seamless entry options (standard and fast-track). Plus, if you nudge the ticket cost with gift aid, you could score a year’s free return visits which is definitely great value for money.

The park offers something for all ages, making it an ideal destination for families. The woodlands has got family orientation in mind with the theme of the park. There is lots to do for the children. Multiple outdoor play areas located over the park, for both toddlers and big kids who are always on the go. There a big indoor soft play area that is 5 stores high! My daughter loved it. There are rides located around the park. If your looking for the latest & super fast rides, you need to got to Alton towers or somewhere like that. The farm area was cool, special as you could get close n feed some of them. Bird of prey section was interesting and amazing on how close you could get. Food here is limited and expensive but nice to eat and cooked, fresh to order. Overall, my family enjoyed going there and we did camp there awell. If you got a young family, give this place a try.

Fantastic day out for our 6yo and 9yo. So much to do although top hits were the 3 water rides and the sledge like rides! Adults enjoyed them too. Highly recommend the 7day pass if you're around for a while as good value if you go several times - great for wet days too with soft plays to go in. Staff were always helpful. My only criticism is no prices on the ice creams and we weren't told the amount when paying. We would definitely go back again..
Beth B — Google review
What a great day out for adults and children. Admission in advance was £17 and a few pence per person and once inside the park food and drink was also very reasonably priced. Selection was burgers, fries, hot dogs ,wraps etc. There was a small selection of farm animals to feed and observe and a large indoor play area for if the weather doesn't cooperate. There was a card available on our visit that if you collected 6 stamps from the rides availability, a return visit after the school summer holidays is only £25 for upto 8 people. Overall a great day out and we are returning in September.

Great little theme park set in beautiful woodland on the side of a hill, as per the norm for Devon! Out of season and nicely quiet, with the vast majority of attractions still open, including farmyard and falconry along with the rides. Overall great day for 11 year old birthday and his buddies.

Such a beautiful place. I know it's not perfect but you get so much value for your money. The food it's not the best, regular fried food but the prices are decent. They could do with more cleaning in the indoor areas but as mentioned above for the money paid I can't complain. We will visit again for sure, it's one experience which really worth doing it with the kids.

Great family park which is spread out with some good attractions. Massive soft play which alone is worth the visit. The raft slides had the longest queues but everything else was easy to get on to and do.

Tickets you could change to give you a weeks worth of entry. Enough to dp to keep kids entertained multiple times. Probably the biggest indoor play area i have ever seen and another indoor play area with air guns alot of fun. The slides were really good and got absolutely soaked multiple times. Toboggan only got chance to do once due to weather but was also fun. Would def go back again and also had a farm with a mixure of animals to look at also. Highly recommend.

When we first went in we went to straight to soft play as it was raining .we arrived around 9:30 so everything would of been open right ? Wrong . We waited around 9:35 to get into soft play whats not bad but what is , is when kids in my family went to play they didn’t let them in because they “could not find the lights “ . Something they do everyday . So we waited ages then got told that the rides open at 10:00 am . So we waited ages but then they said we could go on the rides , we went on the drop tower in soft play as the main bit was not open yet . It did not open until about 10:20 . The play areas look abandoned at some points and the whole area looks like someone thrown loads of ideas but just mushed them around . The tractor ride definitely needs an update . It took ages to get on , although the staff member was the only one smiling. . My child’s idea what I think might be good but doesn’t make that much sense, if that the theme park got frozen in time and the animals are trying to get to the homes , but the pirates are trying to take over 😂.The place does definitely need an update . The water slides you definitely get VERY WET. We waited ages for some of them just to get soaked . The staff except for one were not very good and honestly made the experience not good . They weren’t smiling , did not talk and made one of my kids have to pay for a drink even know she just wanted a twix. There are a few outdoor drop slide what I personally think need an staff or atleast cctv. Because it is very dangerous if you did not read the instructions as it is under six , but I saw some 3 year going down it and getting a lot of friction burns . There was also a blue one in the ninja area what was very bad . Instead of sliding you just fall . You are supposed to have a mat but when someone did not care about the rule they did it perfectly fine . It was around an 8 foot drop and no staff in sight if someone got hurt . Overall , it was a quite good experience if you like slides , if not maybe not as much . In some place it definitely needs an upgrade and way better slides

Stone Lane Gardens is a captivating woodland and water garden spanning over five acres on the outskirts of Dartmoor. It boasts a renowned national collection of birch and alder trees, as well as numerous pools and streams throughout its grounds. The garden also features a unique collection of garden sculptures that have remained since their debut in the 2014 Mythic Garden Sculpture Exhibition.
A marvellous discovery of a beautiful and tranquil place. The owners are clearly very knowledgeable and dedicated. I particularly loved the settings of sculptures. It's also wonderful to see the tree planting. Thoroughly recommended.

A charming little woodland garden. The natural planting arrangement of the alder and birch trees creates a relaxing atmosphere, however there are still reasonable paths to navigate the garden. There are more open grassy areas in places which would be good to bring a picnic.

What a beautiful and tranquil place. Having read that this garden would be open for the National garden scheme on the day my friend was coming to visit. I decided to drive up from Buckfastleigh. It was an unseasonally hot day for October, and so we were able to enjoy what seemed like a sunny summer afternoon strolling around enjoying the sculptures and the low autumn sun glinting through the birch trees. We also sat out in the tea garden for a refreshing glass of apple juice, whilst watching a friendly robin searching for crumbs around the tables. We walked up to sit on a bench and took in the stunning views of dartmoor. Highly recommend a visit. Disabled parking with good accessibility, and an electric charging point, were noted as we arrived.

Mothecombe Beach, located within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is a privately owned yet publicly accessible beach. It is known for being one of the quieter shores in the area and offers a sheltered beach break ideal for beginners and less experienced surfers. The best time to surf here is during winter, particularly around February when offshore winds create favorable conditions.
Beautiful beach, very clean and easy to access. Parking a little expensive but if you're spending all day at the beach it's no so bad. Toilets would be a good addition but understand there isn't always the scope for this to be built in a parking field.

Water & Amusement Parks
Finlake Falls offers top-notch family entertainment and promotes a healthy lifestyle. Dive into excitement by zooming down exhilarating water slides or engaging in invigorating laps in the spacious heated indoor pool, consistently maintained at 30C. Swimming serves as an excellent overall workout while also providing enjoyable leisure time. The park boasts fantastic amenities, including a well-equipped gym that can be easily reserved.
Lovely place to get away. Everywhere is really clean and tidy. Very quiet at night. Fun pool and slides. We had a lovely few days away with the children and then just adults. Will definitely stay there again. Everything is extremely overwhelming priced and very little to purchase in the shop so I advise taking your own food and drinks with you.

Spent a week here for May half term. Had accomodation with hot tub. My husband and I and our two young kids were all very pleased with the accomodation. The swimming pool on site is brilliant and has a fabulous small kids splash zone by the main pool. The main pool is majority very shallow which again is great for young children. Less stress for the parents. Two great flumes for adults and bigger kids and an outdoor pool. I'd have liked to have more on site free entertainment or even, a few more paid activities young kids can do. Activities available are mostly great for age 8 plus. Site is very quiet, no evening entertainment like you get other places. Check in and out is easy! You open your accomodation door with an app you download on your phone. No keys to collect or drop off from reception.

A fantastic family holiday in this splendid location. Amenities on site are very adequate. We had a luxury lodge with a private hot tub. The dogs loved exploring the site and were very welcome. Would definitely recommend and we will be returning
Charmaine H — Google review
Great place for a relaxing holiday. Pool is great for the kids, nice walks, and plenty of activities for all to enjoy. Accommodation is fantastic with plenty of room for the family. Only downside is the bars close early around 9-10 o'clock, and the food is limited.

A lovely pool setting. Great for kids. The outside pool is good too, however changing facilities for the outside pool needs to be improved. Spa staff, seem not as friendly, it kind of distracts from the family feel with their stance and behaviour - hence why it's not a full 5 star review. Other than that, the pool is a great facility for families and alike.

Just stayed at an Eco Pod . Stunning location, has the feel of being in a tree house as the pod is set high up on a bank. The pod was great , though not perfect. Broken curtains, Bluetooth speaker and microwave oven, no dishwasher as advertised. Other than that it is Fantastic for a short break. Hot tub was lovely and warm. Will definitely go again
L T — Google review
Lovely pool for fun on an overcast day. Open to everyone subject to demand on busy days so best to book. Set in lovely area for log cabins and holiday accommodation. Easy access of main dual carriageway but traffic lost in the holiday village of finlake.
Richard D — Google review
Absolutely beautiful place. We stayed in a lodge with a hot tub which was nice at the end of the day to relax in. The pool was great for the children and easy lockers to lock everything in. We ate in the restaurant on the Saturday evening and service and food was lovely. The walks around the lake is nice and if you follow off some of the paths you get to a little pixie woodland which is fun for the children to see all the fairies and wildlife. My only downside would of been the fact our lodge must be a dog friendly lodge which I did not see when we booked this. You could smell dog on the rug and lots of hair which is very unpleasant. But apart from that very clean and tidy. Would definitely come again.

Simmons Park Car Park is a historic park in Okehampton, originally acquired and landscaped by Sydney Simmons in the early 1900s. The park features a large green open space at its center, with a tree-filled garden area on the other side of the river. Visitors can enjoy various attractions such as small waterfalls, ponds with fountains, and opportunities to observe tadpoles and frogs.
Large car park giving access to a large play park, playing fields and hiking trails that extend to Dartmoor and beyond. You can also walk into town to visit a variety of pubs and shops if you want. Can get busy on weekends, especially when running events are on.

Beautiful park with lovely well kept river walk. Clean. Picnic benches. Lots of running & play space. Great rides and climbing equipment. Swings, zip wires & quite a few slides.

If travelling to Cornwall this is a great place to stop and stretch your legs. Such a lovely park and well worth the slight detour from the main road.

Lovely park! Very pretty, good area for dogs to have a run around, nice river...and we visited when the fayre was on, so quite LOUD, but still pleasant.

The golden heart of Okehampton Symonds Park, at the center is a large green open space. On the other side of the river is the tree filled garden area, watch out for the small water fall and ponds with the fountain, get the kids to watch out for the tadpoles and frogs. Walk to top of the the park past the football pitch to get a refreshing drink and a bite to eat or visit the swimming pool and gym, hire golf clubs for the pitch and put get a cold or hot drink. Watch out for the events that happen the May duck races, party in the park, the fair visits, or just chill in the park.

Saturdays free parking after 12! Hour was 60pence via ringo. Beautiful area, good play area for dogs off lead but under control. When walking grounds dogs are on lead. Good kids (some childish adults) playarea too!

I had the opportunity to accompany Helen on an Alpaca trek through Dartmoor, and it was truly a remarkable adventure! The Alpacas, led by Occy and the rest of the herd, were absolutely stunning with their charming personalities. They thoroughly enjoyed receiving affectionate cuddles, head scratches, and even posing for selfies! Helen's unwavering love and dedication towards her animals was evident throughout the experience.
We had an amazing morning meeting Helen’s fantastic bunch of alpacas. It’s truly unique to walk such beautiful animals on Dartmoor. Helen’s boys are all such characters and considerably more friendly than any alpacas I’ve met before - and that’s not to mention the friendly sheep, Snowball in particular! 🥰 Thank you Helen for a wonderful experience and all you do for your animals - we could tell they were all so loved. We’ll be back in the Spring or Summer to see the boys and the moors when the wildflowers are out. ☺️

What an amazing experience on Easter Sunday 🐣. We so loved our time with Helen and her alpaca crew 🦙🦙🦙🦙🦙🦙. I felt after our walk we really got a good idea of each alpacas character. Lil Phil was a lovely sweet boy, he loved a cuddle, Tucker had the best hair do and lovely face markings, Bubbles was very funny and cheeky, Occy loved his snacks, Barney was full of life, Mr T was a very sensitive boy and Joker was Mr Cool 😎. They were so lovely and it was a great experience. Thank you Helen and your lovely alpacas 🦙💙🦙👌🌞

An amazing morning up on the moors with Helen and her herd of alpaca's. Was so great to get to the know the alpaca's individual personalities and roam with them on Dartmoor. Helen looks after them so well, they are living in a little slice of alpaca heaven. Highly recommend.
Melissa B — Google review
Alpacas took me human trekking today (they lead you not the other way around). Lovely friendly animals and a lovely guide in Helen who took us on the moor for a few hours. Would definitely recommend.
Neil W — Google review
I had the BEST time visiting the alpacas at Lydford Gorge! This weekday day trip was a total win. Helen was so patient and professional, especially helping us sort out a dog-related campervan issue. The alpacas themselves were incredible, and I learned so many new things. Helen's love for each alpaca really shines through – it's clear they're all well-loved and cared for! My walk with Occy, a headstrong alpaca who loves to lead the way, was a truly wonderful experience. 🥰

What an amazing morning! Helen was lovely and clearly had a love for her family of Alpacas. She was patient and kind and very professional, she was attentive to the needs of my young daughter who has additional needs and made sure she had a special safe little area just for her and one calm “little Phil “ to be her friend .whilst all the other cheeky hay munchers, had lots of fun being mischievous , around us adults . The venue was easy to find and clean and tidy. The finishing touches were having a few snap shots of our family emailed to us later that day. We weren’t even aware of her taking as we were having so much fun. I’d definitely recommend taking a morning out of your day to visit them . We hope to go again when my daughter is old enough to walk them on a trail .

We had a fabulous time with the Alpacas and the sheep! They are so friendly and you get right in with them, it was so enjoyable. Helen was really nice and knowledgeable and we were so relaxed time flew by. Totally recommend
Lloyd P — Google review
If you love animals and being up close with them then Lydford Alpacas is the place for you! This motley crew of Alpacas live in a beautiful spot on the edge of Dartmoor and allow their ‘Mum’, Helen, to let humans into their world for a few hours. Now any animal lover knows that they all have their own personalities and Alpacas are certainly no exception! Having been introduced to the various characters and backgrounds we shortly set off for a lovely steady walk on the moor. Helen’s obvious expertise and confidence with the animals made the whole experience very relaxing and fulfilling. She is devoted to the welfare of these beautiful creatures and this is reflected with her deep knowledge and understanding of the Alpaca. Highly recommended….and the Lydford Gorge NT cafe is over the road for cream tea afterwards!

Lukesland Gardens and Tea Room is a lovely Victorian era garden in Dartmoor National Park with an impressive collection of shrubs and specimen trees. In the spring, you'll see brilliant displays of brightly-coloured flowers against a backdrop of wildflowers. Throughout the season you can enjoy peaceful walks through the gardens, or relax in the tea room with a cup of your favourite tea.
Had a lovely return visit to Lukesland Gardens. Each time you visit especially in different seasons it’s a joy to behold. Beautiful colours and trees. Tea room very reasonable prices and delicious.

A lovely garden with dinner wonderful trees and shrubs. In the cafe, the soup and cakes were really good. We would have awarded 5 star if there had been more to choose from in the café, but understand that would be difficult to achieve as the gardens are only opened to the public for two days per week on two short periods during the year.
Andrew M — Google review
Wow, this place is truly a thing of beauty. The colours and smells were amazing and instantly put my anxiety and depression and ease. I took my 2 year old daughter and family with me visiting from Derbyshire and we were blessed by great weather. Wonder cup of tea before you head out into the gardens and instantly transported to heaven.
Jack D — Google review
Extensive gardens, much bigger than we anticipated. Well maintained and lots of variations of plants/trees. Streams flowing throughout with bridges in various places. If you are unsteady be cautious when walking around as some of the terrain is naturally uneven. Definitely not suitable for wheelchairs due to gradients and the landscape. Limited food options in the cafe so advisable to bring your own lunch.
Paul W — Google review
Beautiful hidden gem of England. Fabulous day out, cafe was rural and perfect food. The peace and quiet was amazing. What a place. Thoroughly recommend for getting back to nature.
