We really enjoyed our visit here. As members there was no entrance fee, but even if we were paying the entrance fees due a family of 3 was really reasonable. The castle ans grounds are really well looked after and there is a lot of interesting things to see inside the castle. It is definitely worth walking to the old castle ruins just a 5 minute walk behind the main castle. It is a great place to take a picnic and there is also a really nice park for the kids too tuckered away.
The road to the castle is a disaster! The gift shop and castle are worthy the visit. Staff very friendly and welcoming. We didn't go into the castle but I did take the dog around the moat as suggested by a staff member. I took lots of pictures. Beautiful views, the only thing that was a slight inconvenience is i didn't wear the right footwear! It's was a little wet around the back of the castle and my feet got soaked. Obviously this is my fault and no fault of the castle grounds. I was wearing trainers, I'd recommend boots or Wellingtons. Beautiful place though.
Absolutely loved this place. Soo unique in design. We visit lots of castles up and down the country and this is one of the most memorable. Beautiful surroundings, loads of history and some very knowledgeable, friendly staff. We will revisit, next time we pass through. Highly recommended
Our favorite castle of the 10 we visited on our 2 week roadtrip. Loved the kind staff and how you feel like you have the place to yourself to explore. It really feels like a fairytale with a moat and original site you can walk to nearby. So pictaresque and worth the drive.
Fabulous little castle, really interesting place with loads of history. Only a short journey from Dumfries. We didn't have to book ahead of time and were able to park easily. They also have a great little shop and small cafe. Lots of places to have a picnic and the area is great for dogs, with some nice paths and walks
Great place to visit, some restoration work being carried out, at present.Good car parking area, gift shop and video area to educate you on the history of the site. You do a small walk to the original castle site. Well worth a visit. Some areas of the castle are not accessible by wheel chair, for obvious reasons.
My favorite Castle of my first 9 days in Scotland. This one has a moat, like a true castle should. The draw bridge was destroyed centuries ago, along with part of the roof, and sections of it have been exposed to the elements for some time. There are sections repaired allowing access to the multiple levels where there is a roof protection that section. The prison was in good condition too. Crazy to know the prisoners were just tossed from 2 stories into the pit. Don’t bother checking out the original castle a short walk away, as it is flattened, and the perimeter blocks are all left near foundation level. Check out my photos.
Very interesting Castle/s. Parts were closed off but there was enough to have a wander around (albeit it's not particularly large for a castle. The staff in the shop/visitor centre were helpful and friendly. Worth a visit if you like castles/historic buildings.

Beautiful place and so impressive. The building is amazing and the tour we had was superb. The lady was very engaging and knew her stuff so the tour was fascinating. Lunch was delicious and the staff were all fantastic. My daughter is 10 and enjoyed the adventure playground, but so did my 14 year old son. Can't recommend enough!
This is the home of one of my ancestors, so I was thrilled to be able to walk the grounds! The castle is very large. There are plenty of parking spaces, also an area to park and have lunch. Visitors were having a great time riding bikes while I was there. Dog friendly and sheep for as far as the eyes can see! Visiting the grounds was free and well worth the time as there are several trees on site that are very old and beautiful. Recommend a visit!
Beautiful castle and surrounding scenery. Booked a tour in advance- well worth doing and very interesting. There is a Rembrandt painting that can be viewed as part of the tour- a nice bonus! Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and had a great sense of humour. The gardens are beautiful and well maintained. We had lunch in the Castle Cafe afterwards which was tasty with generous portions. Lovely gift shop with a great selection.
Amazing place to visit with dogs that are happier off lead. Went twice in a week we loved it that much. Great walking routes, did multiple of them. Only paid for parking @ £2.50 for the whole day which is a steal. Cafe was lovely and reasonably priced. Would highly recommend.
Drumlanrig castle and grounds are beyond anything we have been to before, the pink castle is stunning packed full of history amazing paintings and furniture. To be able to get so close to the Rembrandt was a real honour and a highlight of the tour. Gary the tour guide was brilliant really helping us understand the history easily he is very knowledgeable. The grounds are perfectly manicured it’s a real credit to all the staff who maintain the castle and grounds, the castle is still used and lived in by the duke and family he was there on our visit. Make sure to book the castle tour in advance as they fill up quickly
Beautiful grounds and an interesting looking building from the outside. Quite annoyed that the guy who took our money told us we could look round the castle as much as we liked, only to find out he meant from the outside. Seemed expensive without access to the castle.
What a fantastic day out . Loads to see and do. We did the castle tour and it was really interesting Gary the tour guide was fantastic . I would highly recommend taking a visit. The gardens are beautiful .
A full day out. Kids will love the play park and space. Adults will love the garden grounds and castle. It has something for everyone and the gardens are incredible.

An absolute bargain and a must visit on a sunny day! The staff were friendly and helpful, there was so much for the children to do that we were tempted to come back the next day. The food and drink were fantastic and the location is stunning.
Fantastic place for both kids and adults. Much cheaper than most similar places. Staff are very friendly and always seem to be happy to answer any questions. Amazing scenery, fun things to do, could easily spend the whole day here! Lots of slides, tobogins, play park, bouncy pillows, go carts, hay barn, trampolines and a little train ride which you can go on more than once. Fed lots of animals, there was a petting session with guinea pigs, rabbits and ferrets and then kids fed milk to the baby lambs. They loved it! Just be aware that some animals, (a goat in our case) are very clever, and whilst you feed another animal they grab the feed bag out of your hands 🤣 All very funny though. Oh and there's a lovely cafe and delicious ice cream to end your day off. Perfect day, thanks we will be back again when next in Scotland! 😁👍
Honestly, one of, if not, THE best open farm we have ever visited across Ireland and Scotland! Loads of space, amazing cafe, plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal with the animals and loads of activities for the kids. We loved it and highly recommend a visit for young and old!
Great park, plenty parking and fair priced. Kids absolutly shattered on the way home, just way i like it to be. Guess it was the outdoor activities and dragging the seats to the top of the slides repeatedly. Disappointed boat pond closed due to lack of water And quad bikes also closed. But my kids still had a blast without so 5*
This place was absolutely fantastic family day out, we visited out of season so there wasn't crowds of people. There was so much to do for children and adults alike. All the outdoor slides and activities were so much fun!!! The kids loved feeding the animals and the cafe was a lovely spot to grab lunch. Would highly recommend a visit if in the area but also worth making the trip if travelling from further afield.
Feed the animals, hold rabbits.and guinea pigs. Lots to keep young and older kids occupied. Plenty of benches for picnic use. We had an excellent day
What an amazing place. My son (2 1/2) loved it Plenty of things to do, Staff very friendly and knowledgeable Food is reasonable priced Great value for price to get in Wheelchair/pushchair friendly Toilets very clean Lovely cafe very clean
Need kids to burn off some energy this place is perfect. the cafe was fantastic food not expensive and tasty loved the ice-cream. Staff very friendly.

Great place to bring younger ones reasonable price to get in. Good/fair weather needed to get the best out of the actual Dino bit. You need to walk through the garden centre to get to the Dino park. Staff are really helpful in both the garden centre and Dino park. Tropical feel to the walk around part, and lots of animatronic Dino's to look at with a genuine Jurassic park film theme running through it. Soft play is big enough with a toddler/baby area and wasn't too busy when we were there To the owners, congrats you've done a unique job and hope you feel it's been worth it. Personally loved the foliage, mine and the bridge.
Visited Hetland Garden Centre and Dino Park with my extended family of young adults. We all ate at the garden centre's cafe which had a well catered menu with options for vegans and intolerances. There was also a good selection of delectable cakes and desserts. A little on the expensive side but the food and service were all very good. The Dino Park was reasonably priced at £6 for adults and cheaper for children. The staff member was extremely friendly and helpful and the Park itself was well laid out with plenty to see and explore.
Absolutely brilliant family day out. We brought our 3yr old son for the first time and he had a great day. He said "best day ever!" Lots to do and see. Not expensive either.
Absolutely rubbish! We paid over £50 to see a bunch of plastic dinosaurs that don't even move...you can walk around it in less than 10 minutes, and they make you pay extra for soft play! The place is an absolute waste of time and money and looking very tired. The restaurant wasn't much better, lots of flies in the cake cabinet and the meals are more like kids party food! Please don't waste your money here! Go to one of the other local amazing farm parks or activities!
The dinosaur trail only takes 10/15m to walk around, but you stop and explore, 'digging' up bones and exploring the area. We stayed for about 2 hours, did three laps and spend an hour in the soft play. Decent hot food, really engaging staff with the kids, and unlike a lot of soft plays not cramped and really well maintained. Absolute must stop with dinosaur obsessed toddlers. A real gem.
Loved it. Went close to opening time and it was so lovely and quiet, perfect for my 3 autistic boys. Lots of different dinosaurs to see and they loved digging for fossils. Nice little playground in the middle for a run around. The soft play was good, not too big so easy to keep an eye on the kids. Staff were all very nice and friendly, talked us through the whole thing before we went in. It was just great.
Great place. Lots of variety for little ones. Good selection of dinosaurs, well landscaped, a lovely wooden park, one of the best soft plays I've ever seen, and the food was delicious. I'm gluten free and they had loads of GF cakes to choose from! My little boy had a brilliant time. We've also been when they decorate it around Christmas time and it looks great
Our 2 year old had a fantastic time, loved the dinosaur models and sound effects, and the playground was really good too. He spent a good 20 minutes playing in there alone. Recommended for any children with a dinosaur interest!

Had a great day visiting here with my two kids. They both loved feeding the animals and had good fun playing on all the kids play equipment. Plenty to see and do. Didn't have any food as we brought packed lunches but we got ice cream and juice and bought stuff from the gift shop. The whole place is lovely, well kept and very reasonably priced. Staff were all lovely too. Would highly recommend coming 🙂
Well what can I say about Dalscone if you not been before, I highly recommend. Dalscone is amazing and beautiful well kept farm park. All ages can enjoy. They have had a new upgrade on the farm park and it was the best for children, play park, mini golf, bumper boats and the go karts. The team at Dalscone is so friendly and very chatty. If your on social media please do follow them Dalscone farm as they give out amazing content. 💜 Thank you all at Dalscone for amazing visit. 💜🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿💜
Fabulous fun filled farm! the staff are so friendly, helpful and make you feel special. Exceptional value for money, the animals are so well looked after, their welfare is paramount! The food/drinks in the cafe is fabulous with a wide choice of yummy desserts! The cleanliness is exceptional throughout the cafe, farm park and toilets. The gift shop/toy shop has a wide selection of fantastic goodies! A visit to Dalscone Farm is highly recommended!
Great place to visit for the whole day ,so much to see and do for kids of all ages. One grandson went missing so we informed the staff who are all connected by radio ,quickly found him. There is a security measure at the exirmt so he wouldn't gave gotten out ,but I am sure he wasn't the first to dissappear behind grandparents back, well done to the staff and the lady who helped. The kids enjoyed the downhill tubes ,the sack slide and especially the pedal karts, the oldest grandson spent about 3 hours going round and round. They got to feed the goat's and donkeys. Big soft play indoors beside the cafe which has a great choice of food and especially the strawberry and cream tarts. We were staying at a holiday camp so only a half hour drive. We live in the north east of Scotland so it's pretty far to drive otherwise we would go more often
Brilliant Farm Park!! We had such a lovely day and so much to do! We always loved Dalscone farm, but we went for the first time since outside play area has been revamped! Wow Dalscone Team! You've done such a great job and thought through everything! Animals are so well looked after and we were impressed with the new addition! Was clean and well stocked up! Icecreams were the best!!! Such a good value for money! All the staff are so lovely and helpful.
Brilliant for the kids. Easily a day out. Expensive day out if yo'ure planning on eating here like we did. But you can bring your own picnic. Lots to do, many many animals that you can feed. We would definitely come back, 100%.
Staying nearby, and the weather forecast wasn't great, so thought we would try this with a 12, 9 and 4 year old - a hard range to satisfy. They all had a really good time ! There are plenty of different things to do - eg the great playground, the slides, feeding the goats, the bumper boats and seeing all the small animals. Plenty of hand washing facilities, really clean all around the park and friendly staff. Will definitely be back when we are next in the area. Oh, and the forecast was wrong - it was really sunny !
If you are looking for a fun day out no matter what the age, whether that be from baby to pensioner, this place really does tick all the boxes. From animals, to go karts, to sandpits, to trampolines, to soft play, to a cafe and so much more, there is definitely enough to fill an entire amazing day out regardless of your age (and in my case with a disability) Really recommended

A great place to visit with lots of searches for the kids (find all the historic lego figures, find all the animals, search for all the faces etc) this place is free to enter but sadly on the day we visited the weather was poor so we couldn't access the camera obscura which is chargeable to see out over Dumfries. The museum has just about everything, lots of interesting artifacts about the area, the building itself is beautiful and the staff were on hand to answer any questions, we'll worth a visit.
Very large museum in Dumfries with lots of variety to the displays. Shop on site (though magnets on display had very limited stock (1) so we were disappointed). Free entry, toilets available and drinking water. Worthy of several hours visit to take everything in.
Wow! What a find. A beautiful building filled with so much history and a joy to see so many artifacts from times gone by. You could spend hours and hours at the muesum. Thank you to everyone involved with makking a truly wonderful experience. The gardens are also wonderful and the views across Dumfries are amazing too. Well worth visiting if you get the chance.
It's a nice enough museum. The camera obscura was a bit of a climb..lovely building stunning location and very friendly staff
Great museum, educational and unique exhibition, friendly and professional staff.
Really enjoyed our visit to the museum, The kids had fun looking for the mini lego figures hidden amongst the exhibits and getting to touch things and trying on the costume, and going up to see the camera obscura was really good great to see and the guide was very knowledgeable and kept us entertained showing us it. It's free to visit the museum but you can give donation at the door but you do pay to go up to the camera obscura but both worth it.
This place is fantastic - and it's free. I took a 6y and there was so much to do. Lots of items to handle, presented at under 2 feet from the floor so easy to reach and replace. The content is interesting to locals and visitors alike. Dressing up is available throughout and multiple worksheets/Lego hunts etc help to engage different ages of younger kids, allowing older kids (grown ups) to be afforded the time to read at their own pace. Staff are easily found, cheerful and helpful, with pride in the building and its contents. We were sorry not to get up to the Obscura (for which there is a fee) but I'd highly recommend this for all ages of visitor as I've been several times before.
Incredible little museum showcasing the history and archaeology of Dumfries and the surrounding area. The highlight was most definitely the Roman altar reconstruction showing how vividly it was painted when it was first created. Other highlights include the large telescope and the Medieval stone carvings in the basement of the tower. The most interesting aspect is the connection with the Apollo moon landings in the 1960s. We didn't visit the camera obscura as there was an additional charge. The museum is free to enter although donations are most certainly welcome. The staff were also really friendly and welcoming.

I did not know who Robert Burns was till I heard he wrote Auld Lang Syne. A very interesting and educational visit for those he is less known to. Lovely old decor and displays of his work as a poet and wrighter. Respect for the preservation of his work.
Nice place for a walk about..the house is small, much like all other houses. There are some interesting pieces to look at.. Donations welcome
Small museum cum house to visit. 4 rooms available to see, historic objects on display. Friendly staff. No toilets available, car parks (2x) within 2 minutes walk (St Michael's and Brooms Rd)
Really interesting little house, that was the last home of Robert Burns. Interesting facts and artifacts to explore. Free admission (you can donate). 2 rooms downstairs, upstairs not accessible.not wheelchair accessible. Lovely place.
Well worth a visit, very interesting, full of history and character. There is a free carpark not too far away and it is also in walking distance to the Mausoleum and into town. Entry is free, although they do have a donation box and also a small gift shop. The gentleman is so informative and helpful. You can even try on some of the hats and clothes in the dressing room!
Best one of the local museums if you like Robert Burns. He died inside this house.
Really interesting house to visit, even if you are not so interested in Robert Burns or know much about him. For those who are, this is where he died and each room is labelled with its original use in Burns time and there are original belongings of his and wife Jean. On one of the windows, you can see Burns has scratched his name into the glass. Amazingly, this place is free to visit, but with donations appreciated. Very much worth planning a visit along with some of the local free museums and landmarks.
This is the house where Burns spent the 3 years of his life, and although it's quite small it is interesting to visit and there are several exhibits of his work etc. It's free of charge too! Even if you're not a Burns fan it's a good insight into a late 18th century middle class home.

A Garden Centre Gem. We called in toward the end of the afternoon on our way home after a coach tour of Ireland. We were all feeling a bit weary and in desperate need of a hot drink and so we were delighted with what we discovered. The young staff serving in the cafe/restaurant were so warm and welcoming and so confident and engaging. Service was first class. The cafe/restaurant is inviting and well set out. A quick look at the menu revealed a good choice of meals, sandwiches and pastries. Our order arrived quickly; our tea was piping hot and the toasted tea cake and carrot cake were delicious. We had arrived only thirty minutes before closing time, when most establishment would be winding down for the day and yet there was absolutely no hint of that at Caulder's. We were taken to our seats and served so well and so cheerfully. Sadly, we didn't have enough time to look around this well-stocked garden centre, but we will certainly make a point of returning. If you haven't visited yet, I can assure you it is well worth a visit. Outstanding - it's a well-deserved 10/10 from us!
What a fabulous find, on our way back to Portsmouth from Ayr. Perfect place to stop for breakfast Rachael, Susan and Gina made us feel very welcome. Excellent full breakfast, mine with a perfect cooked poached egg all first class products, black pudding was particularly tasty Full breakfast with hot drink tea or coffee, apple or orange juice, white or brown toast. £18.00 for 2. 😲😲😲 Excellent value. The cake's looked delicious ( next time ) The garden centre and gift shop looked great, unfortunately no time to browse ☹️ Super clean toilets. Well done team. We will be back 🥰 I hxan highly recommend you stop and take a look if a gem.
First time back here at the 'old place', but now it's had a bit of a face-lift. Its been given the Calders' touch, and although its (quite) similar, the changes that have been made have been a long time coming. I'm going to say "we got here during the Christmas 🎄 explosion " ... apart from ALL the usual stuff you find at a garden centre Christmas has definitely landed @ Carrutherstown 😀
Nice caffe, good menu, plenty of staff and good coffee ☕️ And M/C parking at the door
What a delight this Garden Centre and Restaurant is. It is such a pleasure to be able to give a glowing review for an establishment which gives excellent service. We visited the restaurant quite late in the day for a coffee and scones and thought that they might be closing up and that we would get rushed out. However this was not the case. The staff were really lovely and showed us to our table explaining that it was table service and that someone would be shortly to take our order. The coffee and scone were very tasty and we enjoyed the atmosphere in the restaurant. It was also a joy to watch the staff work away doing their various jobs and the thing that stood out the most was how organised they were are setting the tables up for the new customers. So often now, when you watch people setting up place settings in a restaurant or hotel, they are very disorganised in the way they do it meaning that it is really time consuming and half of the place settings are missed. The staff at this Garden Centre have obviously been extremely well trained and organised in how to set things up. We didn't have a chance to visit the Garden Centre, but we did have a look round the shop which has a good selection of knick-knacks, gifts and home-made cakes, jams, honey, biscuits etc. All in all, this was a lovely experience to visit Hetland Hall Garden Centre and we are only sorry that we don't stay nearer to it, as it would be a regular place for us to visit. We'll done to all the staff.
Very friendly staff. fab choice of garden goods as well as fancy goods. The cafe very clean, modern. Food was fab too. Well worth a visit.
We have been to 9 out of the 10 Garden Centres that Caulders have over the years and everyone of them although different in their own way always have friendly attentitive staff, lovely food whether meals or cake & coffee and clean well laid out. Heading to Hetland Hall Caulders today as staying in Dumfries again for few days.
Lovely big garden centre with Dinosaur Park and soft play area. Lots of different things available to purchase from plants and garden accessories to clothes, gifts, cakes, sweets and biscuits. Had a lovely stroll round the dinosaur Park which was well laid out and lots of interesting facts about the dinosaurs. There was also a cafe but we did not have anything to eat or drink. This garden centre is dog friendly.

I cant thank Peter enough for his wonderful talk about the spitfire... I was fully engaged from start to finish. The spitfire there was just amazing and well as all the other planes, helicopters on show. The displays have been very thought out to show and give as much information as possible. Not forgetting the lovely ladies in the tea room that know how to make a wonderful cup of tea and coffee. You are all amazing and thank you for such a wonderful outing today
A very nice and beautifully maintained museum with lots of very interesting exhibits. In addition to the main attraction, the Spitfire Mk.IIa pulled from Loch Doon and beautifully restored by volunteers, the museum also offers a control tower representing state during WWII, an exhibition of airborne troops, the homefront, an accessible Hawker Siddeley Trident, engines and many other artifacts. The best thing, however, is the staff of volunteers who modestly but helpfully talk to visitors not only about the exhibits in the museum, among whom is Peter, who himself, as a diver, found a Merlin engine from the Spitfire on display in Loch Doon. A visit to this museum can only be recommended and it is necessary to pay tribute to the entire staff who voluntarily and in their free time take care of this museum.
Had an extremely good time here. We went as a family of 5 and we all found it incredibly interesting. Plenty to see, plenty to read and great facilities. Peter who talks us through the findings of the Spitfire is an absolute credit to this museum too, very interesting to listen to (as are all the staff, who were all helpful and happy along the way). We will be back for sure!
A very pleasant aviation museum just outside Dumfries. The staff are all volunteers with a good knowledge of the displays and museum site. It is reasonably priced and there is a free car park for visitors. There is a small cafe for light refreshments and toilets available on site.
Wonderful museum with an abundance of WW2 artifacts and planes from several eras! The Spitfire exhibit was amazing and I enjoyed hearing about the history of its use in battle as well as its final flight. The staff here are very knowledgeable and you can tell they love what they do! Definitely worth a trip!
Another gem discovered. A lot of places you walk through behind ropes with stuff to look at. Not here, lots of amazing stuff you can touch, informative staff, great displays. Well worth the visit. Congratulations to all the volunteers.
Perfect for any aviation lover, went with my buddy Loads of interesting facts and aircraft on display and lovely staff members Planes on display are all restored into great condition. Loved hearing about the loch doon spitfire mk2 and its story. Exploring the trident and atc tower was awesome too Defo worth a visit,
A really interesting museum with friendly and knowledgeable volunteer staff who are always willing to answer questions and explain 'stuff'. The specific talks about the exhibits are well worth taking the time to listen and learn. Each of the small hangers deals with a specific topic and are well presented and interesting, with good information boards. The Loch Doon spitfire is really well presented and an extremely interesting exhibit, having actually been involved in the Battle of Britain The cafe has good selection of snacks and hot beverages and is again staffed by very nice people. Toilets are fresh and clean and there is good parking If you are in the area give this place a try, it is an interesting and enjoyable place.

A fabulous day out on the reserve as a celebration treat. I've been a few times before when visiting from down south. Now I live up north, and I need to make more of an effort. The centre is signposted from the A75 to Dumfries. The roads do get narrower and windier as you get closer and don't panic. You've not driven into a dairy. Keep going and hang a left once through the centre gateway to the car park. The weather here can be wild as it's literally on the Scottish side of the Solway Coast. So before you're out of the car, you might wanna be getting the waterproofs and boots on, even in the summer. We do get sunshine occasionally mind. Out of the many WWT Centres I've been to, I would describe Caerlaverock as primitive in its facilities, like the one at Welney back in the day. Don't let the fact that there's not a swanky café/restaurant deter you, pack your flask and sarnies!!! There's a lovely indoor area to sit and eat them, along with an outdoor space with reserve viewing. There are accessible facilities here, and the Peter Scott Observatory has a lift to the upper floor. Super helpful staff, too The weather was totally northern, wet, windy, and grey, although not particularly cold on our early October visit. Boots and waterproofs on, obligatory stop to use the facilities. Entrance of £4.50 per adult paid, site map in hand, sightings board checked, advised about ongoing works, and we're off. Straight to the Avenue Tower. We spent quite a bit of time here watching various groups of deer, including a lone stag and a doe with fawn. We worked our way back towards the Saltcot Merse Observatory, then towards the Peter Scott Observatory, then towards the Folly Pond Hide before finishing at the Farmhouse Tower. Caerlaverock is famous for its winter migratory Geese. If you can’t see them, you'll definitely hear them. The weather was well worth persevering with for 4.5 hours as our best sightings were Great White Egrets, a pair of Stonechat, Snow Geese, a leucistic goose, Perigrine Falcon, and a stunning male Hen Harrier. As a bonus for one of us, there are a few Pokemon Gyms here, and amongst the haul, we bagged a Psyduck in my honour. A thoroughly enjoyable and peaceful day reconnecting with nature. My soul is replenished.
Went in April on a week day and apart from one chap photographing birds we were the only ones there. Great place for bird watching, great views. Probably best to use satnav to get there as you could be left puzzled as to if you’re on the right road the signs are so far apart once you’re off the B724 and onto the B725.
Amazing place, love it. Always see my favourite uncommon birds species. Great place to look for freshwater invertebrates and plants too. Wish I could visit more!
This is an amazing place to see over wintering wildfowl, including Whooper Swans and Barnacle Geese. There isn't a cafe, but they have a machine and some cakes for sale. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. A couple of things to be aware of. It's expensive to get in, so worth a longer visit. They feed the swans at 1pm and one of the keepers gives a talk before doing so. Kids love this and there are great opportunities to record video and take pictures. There are a number of hides and other sites with a range of habitats, so brilliant for birdwatching. You can visit the national nature reserve via a different car park and a walk through muddy paths and fields. This reserve is free and has wooden paths you can use through the reeds. There are also hides on the free reserve. Directions and helpful signs just aren't there which is unhelpful and disappointing when very cheap low tech signage could have made a difference. Overall, the Solway Firth is an incredible, beautiful place to visit, and largely unspoilt.
Beautiful wetland environment for migrating geese and swans who overwinter on the Solway coast. Quieter in the summer months but sightings of osprey, barn owls and waders amongst others. Great selection of bird hides and towers. Small café and visitor centre with friendly staff. Peaceful and thoughtfully managed nature reserve.
Arrived at 10.15am for an Introductory Talk Visited various Observation Towers and hides Saw the Swans being Fed @ 1 O'clock Unfortunatelty Centre Closed at 2.30pm 50 mph winds and heavy rain during visit Very Interesting and Informative
Popped in for a visit while on a short break. 12th Oct 23. The wee lady at the reception was really lovely, so helpful and informative a real asset to the reserve. I've mobility issues and she offered loads of help and advice. Fantastic knowledge of the wildlife today too. Great place to visit. Awesome views of a ring tail, whoopers, barnies, shoveler teal etc.
Visited at the beginning on November, the reserve has lots of hides for dodging the great Scottish weather. When we visited there were 100s of swans and 1000s of geese which you could view in comfort from the viewing towers and hides. Swan feeding and talk at 1pm and the staff were lovely, there's a little cafe for hot drinks, soup and cake as well as a covered picnic area. We'll be back in another season to see what else the reserve has to offer.

Lovely area and the car parking fees are fair. The only niggle for me is that the foot routes around the woods are, in places, not marked well.
Excellent place to take the family, large playground plenty of space for picnics and lots of walks available
We started off on the blue trail and it's 80% fire roads. The little bit of off-road isn't what I would class as blue standard either. After a spot of lunch in the Mabie house hotel, which was delicious, we hit the red trail, which was a lot better. Some challenging little climbs, some nice boardwalk sections and some decents that take a but of thinking. The park itself was spotless, as is the norm for these parks in Scotland, but no facilities other than a bike wash (hose pipe), parking and a playground for the kids.

Booked and stopped in for a baby friendly screening. Easy to access with the pushchair, room to park it in the auditorium, comfier seating that some chain cinemas. Really friendly staff and so good to be able to get to the cinema and not have to miss out. Sound and lighting were at perfect levels to not deafen and so it was easy to move about if necessary. Would definitely recommend.
Bonnie's Bistro on top floor is a great spot. Mr and Mrs Howat are consummate family hosts. Food and wine/beer offering spot on. Try the river view terrace. Locals recommended it and were spot on.
Small museum dedicated to the life of Robert Burns showcasing some of his writings and possessions. The museum staff were most helpful in giving us a personal introduction to the museum and collection before letting us take a self guided look around.
Terrific visit today. Learned a lot about this famous poet and cultural icon.
Good museum with interesting facts. There is parking right outside. It is a 10 min walk from the camera obscura so good to see both museums.
Very good museum dedicated to Robert Burns, poet. Plenty of interesting displays and items from his life. Friendly and informative staff on hand to answer questions.
Worth a visit if you are into history. Once you already in Dumfries, you would want to visit all the location that is related to Robert Burns. :)
Great place for an evening out - bar, little cinema, restaurant - and all on the riverside with its own car park.

** Only open one day a year for 5 hours ** - brilliant sculptured landscapes - Must stick to paths to preserve the structures of mounds (plenty of people to tell you off if you don't) - Worth going to see but wouldn't return on a yearly basis.
Perhaps my expectations were too high but I came away a bit under whelmed with the garden. There was no Wow moment. If you've visited Jupiter Artland then this is a water downed version. It was well organised. Volunteers kept you right with parking etc. I liked the live music. Would like to give it more stars but its just okay.
This was a really fun place to explore with the kids. Kids enjoyed running round. Pity some areas have been damaged by people going up the hills etc the wrong way (ie off the paths). Beautiful scenery. Toilets were clean. Picnic benches helpful.
Busy but not crowded. Ample parking and helpful very friendly staff. The grounds were impressive on a large scale. Interactive, fun and thought provoking. Best suited to the more mobile as a lot of areas are without paths.
This is a truly wonderful garden on a grand scale. It's only open to the public on one day every year.
Fabulous estate only open one weekend a year.
Absolutely spectacular, well worth a visit on its open days
Great gardens, great cause. A well organised day and sunny too!

What a beautiful place to have lived. The house and museum were closed for the day, but I enjoyed a lovely walk through the gardens/grounds it has excellent access for disabled people and that’s from someone who has limited mobility, it was easy to access all areas and has plenty of benches to sit and relax or catch your breath or just to sit and relax as I did. I really enjoyed the short walk along the river bank and saw a Merganzer on the river Nith (duck with teeth) which is quite rare and also a wild Mink with a freshly caught young Hare, not something you see everyday. So thank you and hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I did taking them
If you're interested in anything Robert Burns, a visit here is a must. The cottage was built by Burns for his wife, Jean Armour, and family. Many of his most famous works - including Tam O'Shanter - were written while he resided here.
I'm not a Burns fan but I love walking and scenery. I browsed the historical items before walking the banks of the Nith. Its a peaceful and stunning area with amazing views. Well worth the effort.
Lovely, unspoilt, picturesque place. Off the beaten track and just a few visitors, so you can enjoy all that Ellisland has to offer. Ginnie, our guide was lovely. She was very knowledgeable and friendly.
Lovely place to visit, really enjoyed it, lovely lady told us about the house and how Burns used to live and his community spirit helping farmers read his books from his library. There is a short film about him which was a great little watch. very informative about him, his family, working life and farming. Nice little gift shop where we managed to purchase a poetry book with all of Burns work and absolutely extatic we found postcards here aswell, we looked quite a few places for postcards. Lovely walk by the river, some more wood carvings or information by the river would-be great whilst walking both South and North. Thank you for a welcoming and interesting visit. Highly recommended and we would love to visit again.
Truly inspiration visit thanks to the gentleman who came out to greet us and gave us an insight into the life and times of Robert Burns. well worth a visit
Beautiful. Ginny is a very helpful and friendly guide. Good movie, interesting artefacts, and beautiful location. I experienced a strong sensation that "Robert and Jean and the kids lived here". A must visit for Burns Enthusiasts.
Small museum with some historic agriculture exhibits. I hope the very friendly and knowledgeable curator find time to make the farm more inspiring and informative. I can see by its location how Robert Burns was inspired to write his poetry. With access to the River Nith running alongside this makes the museum a place for short to visit or picnic stop. There were no refreshments available on our visit in Oct but there were toilets

1660s house museum with old-style kitchens, an early dentist's surgery & a Victorian nursery.
Slide 1 of 8
Situated at the end of Devorgilla Bridge, this house is now a small local heritage museum. The house was built in 1660 and there is lots of information about the history of it, its occupants and there is even a Robert Burns connection. There's a children's Lego trail to complete and the museum is free to visit but donations appreciated. Worth planning a visit here as part of visiting other nearby local museums.
Built around 1660 by James Birkmyre, a barrel maker, the Old Bridge House is the oldest standing house in Dumfries, ingeniously constructed into the sandstone of the Devorgilla Bridge Over the centuries it served variously as an inn throughout the 18th and 19th centuries—possibly even frequented by the exciseman Robert Burns—and later became a family residence until the mid-20th century Converted into a museum in 1959, the house today offers a vivid window into past domestic life, showcasing spaces like a historic family kitchen, a Victorian nursery, and even an early dentist’s surgery A heartfelt thanks to our amazing host, Nick, for his exceptional knowledge and genuine enthusiasm! Nick masterfully explained the history of the house and its former inhabitants, showcasing every artifact beautifully. He graciously welcomed photography—there were no restrictions whatsoever—and we highly recommend visiting and chatting with him. Thank you kindly, Sir!
Lovely little museum inside the original bridge house showcasing local heritage objects. The guide inside was most friendly.
Popped in here today as I hadn't noticed it open before now as I'm only in Dumfries occasionally. Really lovely, quirky , interesting little museum. As others have mentioned , it's the guide who makes the experience and Ruth was excellent. The place was brought to life by her descriptions and her enthusiasm for bridge house. Well worth a visit and a lovely quiet corner of Dumfries to stop and enjoy your surroundings. Mark
Interesting place with a good collection of different things and friendly staff. Free to visit but only small so you'd need to plan other things if you were visiting from out of the area
Lovely beautiful little house with history 😍
I can highly recommend this little museum. It was very interesting. The staff there was very kind and we learned a lot about the history of that house. She answered every single one of our questions. Thanks a lot.
Friendly and informative staff. Nice contemporary exhibits.

Waterfront green space featuring play equipment, a mini-golf course & a seasonal cafe.
Slide 1 of 8
This has a lovely play area with free parking. A very nice café and clean public toilets not too far away in the bowling green building. It had swings, a maze, slides, a roundabout and a zip line which was working. By the bowling green there were trampolines which were £1.50/15 minutes play. There was also mini golf.
Beautiful place for a walk with the dog and we loved seeing the waterfall too
The park is in a great setting by the river lovely ambience excellent for cycling and walking, there's also, as a bonus The Hut, which is a great little cafe selling amongst other things, nice coffee and delicious home made muffins.
This used to be such a brilliant play park but recently more and more things have been taken away to the point that my 7 year old finds it really boring. There's not even a decent size slide for kids 5+. The only reason I've not gave 1 star is because the mini golf and trampolenes are very good and reasonably priced. The Park Keeper is lovely!
Great little park, which has a nice open feel. Also, it's a good place for a picnic whilst the children play.
The car park is a good size. The play park is really good it's separated into different age sections. It's has a maze. Swings, climbing frame and other play equipment. There a small cafe beside the play park. I did not use it so I'm not sure how much food/drink cost or what they serve. There a few picnic tables dotted about the park. There is crazy golf and putting and small trampolines. There is a charge for them but it's quite reasonable price and the man serving is really happy and friendly. The toilets are located beside the crazy golf. There a large grass area where you can play football,Throw rugby ball, badminton. There seats about the park so you can have a sit down.
Lovely amenity for families and a pleasant Riverside walk. The derelict tweed mill was particularly fascinating and good subject for photography. Nice friendly little cafe next to play park. Free parking.
Improved loads over the years. A really lovely park now and the hut for ice cream and coffee's is open, perfect. Lots of children playing, people meeting up, it was very nice to see it being used so well.
