Beautiful place, very big and clean lake, beautiful nature, rocks and trees, some churches on rocks...
I had wished to visit this place for many years and, finally, I did. We are all familiar with the Marathon contests all around the world, but, this is the The Place, the origin, from where the Greek soldier Pheidippides, ran to Athens to report victory in the Battle of Marathon; he died of exhaustion after delivering the good news. Today's runners, fortunately, survive, although any Marathon race is extremely demanding. Visit the place with me, you are in no danger, enjoy good food and coffee at the shore of the Marathon Lake (it's an artificial one), wander the picturesque landscape, watch birds and just relax. Have a nice trip!
This lake is so quiet, BUT, the forest is burned severely, it's okay 👍 so this lake has a bridge 🌉🌉
.. A beautiful place in Attica that many times its forests being burned for land speculation and as a final act of Love for the environment they now plant and deposit 5 kilometers away the garbage of Attica in the this area!!!!5 is for the memory of forests 1 is for all the destruction of the last green zone of Attica all concerned involved..Of course money for these people I more important for the conditions of people living in this area and of course whole Athens....money that's the only word they learned to worship.. Hypocrisy at its best...not only....
Went there to run the great Authentic Greek Classic Marathon. Great views, great scenery and above all, the feelings, running a route over 2 000 year old!
Do NOT use this route. This map leads u to middle of nowhere, on dirt road, you will see valleys with trees burnt, and then dirt road track ended, field of wild flowers and grass filled the area, we had to make a u-turn to get out. DO NOT use this route if you want to visit Lake Marathon. Instead, if you must visit, pick the Lake Marathon panoramic view on Google map. It’s over-rated.
from a tourist perspective, there is nothing here... walking routes from the dam are blocked off and the one restaurant that used to be here is abandoned.
A great place to visit really close to Athens

There is no charge for entrance. The Monastery has a special place in our harts. Really charging with holiness, and has a long history. We love this place, our second time visiting. Our children loved it too. I really recommend visiting this place if you are in Athens, or around. You will not regret it.
A place of deep peace and grace ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Visiting St. Ephraim Monastery was a profoundly moving experience. The serene grounds, adorned with ancient trees and vibrant flowers, create a tranquil atmosphere ideal for reflection and prayer. The main church houses the relics of St. Ephraim, and the presence of the mulberry tree associated with his martyrdom adds to the site's spiritual significance. The nuns maintain the monastery with evident devotion, and the sense of holiness is palpable throughout. Whether you're seeking spiritual solace or a moment of peace, this monastery offers a sanctuary that touches the soul.
The monastery is pretty, the views are amazing. I am not religious, but i like the aura of this place.
What a great blessing that anyone can venerate this saint's body here! Saint Efraim intercede for us.
I simply love Saint Ephrem. A great Saint with a gorgeous monastery. A true history lesson and also a lesson for humanity. It’s easy to get there from Athens. We visited the monastery and the surroundings and it was lovely. Peaceful and heartwarming if you read the history of the place before you get there. Highly reccommend.❤️
The Sacred Monastery of Saint Efraim is one of the largest and most popular pilgrimage spots in Greece. It is just perfect. There is a beautiful view of the sea. The buildings are gorgeous.
Beautiful monastery, definitely worth visiting. If you are a woman, ensure you dress appropriately. Trousers are not permitted and you will be asked to cover up with a robe to enter.
Open hours during week: 7AM-12PM, 4PM-6PM. Prepare to dress appropriately for a monastery. No pictures allowed in the church at the holy relics. Driving there for the first time might be challenging due to ongoing construction on the streets. Can leave prayers lists. Donations are recommended. You can buy small empty plastic bottles, next to the store, just in case you want to take home oil from the burning candle at St. Ephraim’s holy relics. Buy icons, books and other items from monastery’s store, not from the vendors in the street. This way you are supporting the monastery and all items are authentic.

In my opinion, this is one of the prettiest and cleanest beaches near Athens. Plus, it's free! There's just a short walk from the parking lot to the beach. The people who come here are really nice and chill. You can also sit in the shade under the trees if you want. The swimming is great; you can go pretty far out. Plus, there are a few shy, beautiful cats before you enter the beach. The drive to this beach from Athens is lovely, taking you through Marathon, a cute little town. Unfortunately, there was a forest fire, but it's still very beautiful to drive through the area.
Great place for any adventure , car free , family friendly with crystal clean water , clean entrance and amazing Rafina’s view .
Mind the parking! The beach is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen, but the parking is only legal in the lots in the small town of Skinias. The spot we wanted to stay at was about 30m walk from the tavern. When we left, at about 8 o'clock, 6 police officers were giving out tickets and confiscating license plates. At least 30 cars were missing their plates, so be careful! The fine is at least 80 eur and you get your plates back in 30 days. The beach has golden sand, almost no pebbles, lots of shade from trees and the beach was not crowded at all, on a Saturday. The water is warm, very clear and very calm. A person who is taller than 1.5m can easily go 50m out and still be able to touch the bottom.
Perfect non serviced, long and wild beach close to Athens. Very shallow and clean water. Plenty of space on the sand or underneath the pine trees and mostly not crowded at all. Parking during summertime can be a little difficult as the old parking spots were closed
Clear water, just a few people, one of the nicest beaches.
The ideal spot for an after-office escape during workdays and relaxation during days off
fantastic sandy beach with pine trees for shade. does get busy at weekends
Beach was great, our Little Man loved the sand and water was clean. We rented an umbrella and sun-chairs from Γλάρος Ψαρι Ταβερνα. €5 for each of us but you get a small bottle of water and a €5 drink credit, which I found to be a great value. The bar is walk up only but the bartender was very good, fast and nice. Didn't try the food at Γλάρος but we will be going back to try it as they have tables out on the sand and what I saw looked tasty.

Beautiful monument to visit! Entry is free, we were allowed to take our dog as long as he stayed on the path. It’s nothing big and the beach infront is breathtaking, so you can easily combine those two!
Very interesting place by the sea, kind of unexpected in Greece with this egyptian sculptures with greek faces. Quickly visited (10-15 mn) but still free and not touristic at all.
Magic place!! Egyptian Sanctuary just next to Athens in Nea Makri. Very well preserved statues of Egyptian gods. Do not miss to visit this place builded before 2 millenniums!
I thought the statues were real but finally saw them in person at the Marathon museum. Wow! They are something else in person. The site is cool but wish they would clean up the back to discover much more.
Very interesting archeological site but disappointed there wasn't more to look at. The statues at this site are replicas and original are at a different location, housed in a museum. There's no guide and no pamphlet to tell you what you're looking at, but very briefly, it's a Greek-Egyptian sacred sanctuary that was built on a marsh that resembled the Nile of Egypt. The relationship Greeks had with Egypt was a very intricate one and although the statues here are in obvious Egyptian style, they have Grecian faces!!! The area in the middle was a pyramid and the entrances were guarded by Osiris or as the Greeks had their own name for this god, "SERAPIS".
Very interesting find as we took a walk along the Nea Makri promenade. Tucked away on the left is a gate in a wire fenced off area. There's an attendant who can offer some literature. This is the site of Egyptian baths around 260 ad. There are some Egyptian statues standing sentinel at the doorways to the ruins and your imagination builds a picture of what it must have been like to be there in ancient times.
Small free place to visit while in Nea Makri
A really interesting archeological place ,very close to the beach ,I really like the statues! Don't miss it if u r near !

Experience is not comparable with other most famous ones in Athens, but the little museum is not bad. Also the tombs, just behind the museum are not bad. Entrance fee is 5 EUR. Parking available
A very small museum with little to do with the actual battle of Marathon. Admission here also grants admission to the Tumulus of the Athenians if you are visiting there, too. The bathroom was unavailable when we visited re lack of staff.
A small archaeological Museum covering the local area, but surprisingly not much about the Battle of Marathon. This is covered at the nearby site (by car) Tumulus of the Athenians at Marathon. Still worth a visit, if you're interested in history. No toilets though
Very interesting small museum close to Athens, obviously the must see in Marathon. Affordable entry price (5€ for adults, free for children). Definitely recommended !
Amazing museum and a must visit! The Egyptian related items are amazing. There is a necropolis that is also a must see. All of this is in addition to the classical Greek items you will see. However, the real reason to visit is to see the Tumulus of the Plataeans which is located as part of the archaeological museum. It was excavated in 1970 and 11 bodies were indeed found at this site. Please take the time to visit here.
It is a small museum and has a limited number of exhibits. Not worth a long drive, unless you are an archaeology Ticket costs 5 euros.
Small museum but definitely worth a visit while in Nea Makri.
One storey of sculptures and that's all. Nice, but nothing really interesting. The price is five euros per adult, free entry for children. OK!

A lovely museum with, as you would expect, articles from the marathon race. A lovely entrance greets you before you have even entered the building with flags and statues. The entry fee was 2 euros and is well worth the money for what you get to see. With every type of medal, from the very first ever race, to modern day with Olympic torches of all types from all the different years, and you learn so much about the people who have taken part since it all began with some very surprising and revealing information on how hard it can be to win one and very easily lost. Beautifully laid out with information boards and no end of cabinets full of runners medals and trophies. There is a lovely film show explaining what the word marathon really means. There are toilets with gents, ladies, and disabled available. There are some small souvenirs to be bought near the entrance. Highly recommend if you like history and running.
the museum is very nice, it has a movie and a room with chairs and a projector where you can see the link between the battle of Marathon and the Olympic games. there are a lot of medals, cups, running shoes and torches from all the runners on the Olympic games. only 2€ entrance and it worth the money spent.
We visited the Marathon Museum and gained an in-depth understanding of the origins of the marathon sport. This museum is located in the town of Marathon, which is precisely the birthplace of the historical Battle of Marathon. At that time, the Persian army invaded Greece, and the soldiers and civilians in Marathon fought bravely, ultimately succeeding in repelling the Persian army. After the battle, the military commander dispatched Phidippides to return to Athens with the news of victory. Phidippides ran 42.195 kilometers in one go, reached the foot of the Acropolis in Athens, and died of exhaustion after shouting the news of victory to the commander. Since then, in memory of him, people have held the marathon race. Since the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, the awarding of trophies and medals for each marathon event, as well as the Olympic torch relay activities, have all been held here. The museum houses torches used in all previous torch relays, which are of great commemorative value. All of this is truly awe-inspiring, making us cherish peace even more and commit ourselves to working for the well-being of all mankind. The spirit of sports unites us closely and inspires us to contribute to world peace. In addition, along the seaside of Marathon Town, there is a row of around dozens of restaurants serving authentic Greek cuisine. Among them, the steaks, potatoes, and Greek yogurt are especially popular. They taste incredibly delicious and authentic, and the prices are very reasonable. I hope everyone can enjoy the pleasure brought by these delightful dishes.
Nice front entrance outside and the grandeur of the grounds and building was impressive. However, just a lot of old torches and photographs in cabinets that have been donated to the museum... All interactive TVs turned off and/or broken, so not providing any more information. The place was absolutely empty when we were there... So that says it all! Not worth a visit to be honest. And was a bit of a let down... Cost us €2 each. So doesn't break the bank. However the price point reflects the place and what you can actually see, do and understand. Very disappointed.
If you have run a marathon or thinking of running one, check out the museum. It will inspire you or assure you that all that training was worth while. A small museum but worth a visit. We cycled there from the coast. Roads felt safe.
For us it was well worth the visit. Lots of memorabilia from the Marathon at the Olympics and other races around the world. They present a short video on the history of the Marathon and the message behind it.
Interesting setup. Nice collection of marathon around the world. Pitty that some special ones are missing: - Brussels: marathon in the capital of EU - Morocco . Marathon du Sables: special edurance - Istanbul: only Marathon over 2 continents - highest altitude marathons: like Kilimanjaro or Ladakh or Mont Blanc … The movie is out dated and not entertaining for children. Best to inform yourself on the history of the Marathon before you go. The start of the original marathon near the bridge is only 2 min walk away, worth to pass by. If you are with a car, park at the starting point and visit the spot. Go to yhe museum afterwards. The coffee bar across the museum is worth stopping for a greec coffee
Very very nice! The ticket was only 2 euro. There is so much too see. You can spend easily +1h there. We are amazed and the atmosphere was breathtaking, just stepping into the museum and seeing all this things it’s such a vibe. I highly recommend it! Well deserved 5 stars!

What a lovely beach bar. Very clean amenities, lovely friendly staff and beautiful food and drinks. All very reasonably priced, considering the beautiful location.
Nice beach bar/restaurant. Right on beach. It’s a pebble beach so be aware. Nice atmosphere good music. Service is slow. Had the pork souvlaki. Tasted good but it was cold. Not even warm. Felt like was eating cold cuts. Went I told the waiter it was cold he acted surprised like he didn’t know what cold is. Not even an apology.
The music in the afternoon and evening was so incredibly loud that it was impossible to have a conversation. The worst food we had in Greece: whether it was the Pinsa or the salty cheesecake. However, the staff was very friendly.
Great beach bar. The front line is 30 euros and the weekend 60 euros. Also with the price you can eat and drink whatever you like
The place could be very nice, especially in the evening. However, the music is extremely loud the whole time, which makes it impossible to have a conversation – very annoying. The food was not very good and the cocktails were disappointing. I had a Mojito, but it was just overly sour. A real pity, because the place itself has potential!
The place is really nice and people who works there are really nice. Special thanks to Vagelis who is always very supportive and good person.
Nice spot but very quiet on a Tuesday night. Perfect if you are looking to relax but if you are after a busier place either come on a different day or look elsewhere.
Always a good day. Thanks to all the staff

A have-to-go place - under the hot summer sun after a swim or on a weekend in the winter after a seaside lunch it presents the austere beauty of Attica where it distills the essence of Greek history
Your admission here also provides admission to the Archaeological Museum of Marathon. There was a WC and water available, too. You can walk the full loop around the tumulus but there is nothing to see beyond the tumulus itself and visual displays toward the entrance.
Personally I did not like so much….you have the hill (tumulus)….and nothing more. There is a pedestrian path a bit too long (especially in summer time) with only some info at the beginning and for the rest nothing…. Entrance fee is 5 EUR (that is too much for the place….a combined ticket with the museum would have more sense…). Plenty of parking
To be honest, there's not much to see - the tumulus, explanatory boards, statue of Miliades. However, it is the atmosphere that sells the location. See among old olive trees, it was quiet and serene.
A beautiful park with the Tumulus in the center, but closed to visitors on April 28....
5 EUR to look at a heap of soil and a monument pillar. Really? The Archeological Museum of Marathan is a whole museum with lots of info and the Helladic Tumuli for 5 EUR. I would suggest to whoever runs these sites to combine the ticket for the two. Also the Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods has much more to look at and that's free.
As you can see everything if you walk outside around, take the five euros entry fee to invest instead in the Archeological museum which is much more interesting. You don´t miss anything if you don´t go inside... A place like this should not have entry fee - it´s part of history. But the man who was in service was very helpful in explaining it and more about the area. Thanks for the nice talk. Five stars for it and only one for the crazy fee. So it´s three. And no -you have to pay it seperatly from the museum inbetween...
Must visit site if you are in Marathon. So much historical significance especially if you have ran a marathon. This was what it was all about. Pheidippides ran back to Athens to inform them of their victory in battle. The burial site of 192 Athenians who were killed during the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. Sadly, the park grounds are not very well kept and not enough has been done to dedicate this place to the famous battle. Closed on Monday.

Our snorkeling trip with Dimitris was fantastic. We discovered lots of fish, sea cucumbers, and other amazing things in the water. It was very interesting, and he explained things brilliantly. I can recommend the trip to everyone. Best regards Doreen
Our first dive experience for me and my daughter with Dimitri K. Dimitri was really kind a explained everything really good. First we get all the materials and information, then we did exercises in the water and after we went in the sea. Blue sea, little fish, a sea star, baby octopus and sea-eals… focus on your breath, smooth and relaxed… we felt safe all the time. After the 45min dive we received little movies of our experience, so nice! We would recommend this school for people who want a first experience in the water. Me and my daughter had a great morning! The sea was cold… but with the suits, we servived! 😉
Dimitris is professional and helps a lot. Review the basic knowledge before two OW fun dive, and arrange a good location referred to the weather changing. Patiently explain the creature nature and what we might see.
An unforgettable experience! My children and I absolutely loved it. From the breathtaking boat ride across the bay, to snorkeling among the rocky areas, and then gliding back toward the calmer beach — everything was perfect. The refreshing drinks, the tasty snack, every detail was thoughtfully planned. Dimitris shared the beauty of the place with us, and we truly enjoyed his insightful explanations. I highly recommend this experience! Cedric
Dimitris, the instructor, was very professional, very patient and calm. We didn't dive until he saw we were ready. The experience was very fun and interesting.
I had an amazing introduction into the world of diving with Dimitris back in May, would recommend
Scuba diving in Nea Makri is a must-do in Athens! Dimitris was an excellent instructor—very thorough and made us feel safe. He also took great underwater photos and videos. We saw lots of fish and sea urchins. Highly recommended!
Loved the experience with Dimitris. Everything was professional and got my certificate in few days. Who knows, maybe I'll come get next one here as well.

We went for a birthday party. The place is covered all over with trees and that gives shadow protection and a native essence. The kids played many sports and they drove karts through a small driving training course. They had fun and the party was a success. Also the staff were very professional and friendly. All that in very reasonable prices.
Ideal for family and kids..also for education purposes..learn to drive..
Nice and calm place (for kids and for their parents (maybe, not a good place for older kids, I'd say older that 10), 4 stars because some facilities are outdated and little expensive but it's worth it's money for the kids
Fun place for children and the staff is very friendly
(Translated by Google) I had my daughter's party there (age 8) and we all had a great time! The children were delighted and the adults were delighted with the place and the activities (the children, always with the help of the people of the place, drove cars, played water fights and golf). Also, they were all very kind and we thank them very much for everything!!! And regarding the comments I was reading before I closed the place about it being abandoned, I have to say let's not dwell on details and not let such reviews prevent us from visiting the place and judging for ourselves. Everything is relative and subjective. However, because she wanted her to see, she climbed up somewhere to be higher and slipped and fell to the floor. While the lady saw her and grimaced, she didn’t bother to ask if she was okay or if she needed ice. Because she was embarrassed at that time, my daughter didn’t say anything. Beautiful beach ... the water is warm, clean and shallow, cheap prices and friendly people ⛱🌊🦈
Very nice place and excellent customer service.
(Translated by Google) I like this place because there is something inexplicably relaxed about it. Canteen, normal prices, toilet in a blue box and sea a bit rough with arms. However, lovely location with good friendly staff, free parking and sunbeds.
(Translated by Google) Nice location to relax by the sea to have a coffee or a drink and enjoy the sun or coolness under the pines or tamarisks .... The premises may not be of a shop but of a canteen or outdoor cafe / bar, but there is no annoying music and banter that happens elsewhere .... That's why I recommend it (Original)
(Translated by Google) Very nice place no loud music kind staff. It is located in a limited area with its own parking lot. Comfortable sunbeds with plenty of space between them, not on top of each other and not on the beach to block people. Very good choice and also cleared the land that was jungled before. It is also a pleasant place to spend your evening by the sea (Original)
(Translated by Google) Fantastic place. Comfortable and pleasant environment. Plenty of seating options. Either at a table or on a deckchair, surrounded by lawn. Quality products for anyone to choose from and the kids at the bar and the owners very kind and helpful.
(Translated by Google) Beautiful location with private parking. It has comfortable sunbeds, good coffee with reasonable prices. The negatives are: to enter the sea you have to pass some rocks, and the toilets are chemical (Original) Όμορφη τοποθεσία με ιδιωτικό parking.
