What an amazing place, atmospheric scenery in a beautiful quaint location. Lots of hikes, high and low from this area as well as options to have fun in the pebbled beach locations and paddle boarding on the waters. The roads aren't the best and quite narrow added to inconsiderate visitors who like to park on the double yellow lines in convoy making passing quite challenging in busy periods
Beautiful place had a walk in the hillside the views from any of the surrounding Fell are absolutely breathtaking. I would definitely recommend Buttermere for Fell walkers and anybody else for that matter just a very beautiful place.
Buttermere was our first stop on a trip to the Lakes, and it certainly set our expectations high for the trip. We did the 2hr circular walk around the lake, and I think it might be one of the best walks and locations we have ever done. It's a perfect mix of mountain views, forest covered areas and the beauty of the lake itself. It's easy to follow the route round, and accessible for a variety of walkers as it is a mostly flat walk (no major hill climbs) . Would reccomend stopping here wether it be for a walk or even just to appreciate the scenic views.
If I’d like to call it, it would be mini Scotland. Beautiful views, beautiful waterfall, beautiful backdrop scenery, it was excellent and beautiful. The photos don’t do justice to how beautiful it looked in person. Absolutely breathtaking.
Hidden gem 💎 My favourite place in Lake District. You have to drive through some tight roads ut it's worth. If you have a choice then take small car. It will be easier to drive during traffic. Perfect place for family fun. Pack your lunch, dinner, games, kayak, etc and have lot of fun. Try and maintain the peace. It's amazingly quiet here. Parking is free just in front of entrance but you have to park on a roadside and it's very limited.
This has to be one of the most scenic circular walks in the Lake District! Access for us was via Keswick and the Honister Pass which is single track with passing places, and not particularly for the faint hearted. We parked at the farm just prior to Buttermere itself, where day parking is £4.00. From here there is easy access down to the walk which is well signposted. The walk can be done either way around, but we did it so the first part was on the opposite shore to the road that runs parallel with the lake. For the most part the walk is flat on well trodden and well maintained paths. Given the rain in previous weeks, whilst it was a little muddy in places, nowhere was it really bad. The views around the valley are amazing in clear skies and we had fantastic weather so no complaints. The route to the village centre at Buttermere is around 3 miles, with a good cafe in the centre with a decent menu and service at reasonable prices. There is a pub (or two I think) but I can't speak on these. Rejoining the circular path the route runs very close to the lake, although on this side the path is a bit more up and down, and slightly more strenuous with many tree roots and rocks on the path, so good footwear is advisable. We found that the walk was closed around three quarters of the way round due to a rockfall, but no-one seemed to be taking any notice of the signage and warning tape, so the risk is on you as to whether you keep going (as we did) or turn back!! Eventually the path rejoins the road around 500mtr from the farm car park (where during the summer there is an ice cream van stationed (at weekends at least). Care is required on the road as there is practically no verge to walk on. In all the walk is around 5 miles (it does say it is 4.5m in most of the guides, but I think this is a slight underestimate given my step count!! Anyway, it is well worth doing this walk, and if you don't fancy the return back through the Honister Pass, there is an option to drive past Buttermere and Crummock Water, and take the Whinlatter Pass back to Keswick and tne A66.
Absolutely stunning to walk around this beautiful lake. Incredibly still water, many different species of trees and lots of wildlife. Plenty of places to park nearby. Would definitely recommend a visit.
Beautiful hiking place. However, it is not for beginners. You can enjoy hiking until Bleaberry Tarn, but above that, all the best. It is very steep climbing towards Red Pike and getting down from High Stile as it is not an easy route. Due to safety reasons, we didn't take a photo as we were climbing up and down right on the edge of the hill, and it was windy. We only took photos when we felt safe.

We loved this walk, from Lanthwaite car park through the woods which we went by the stream and then onto the lake. Stunning area and the dogs had a great time exploring. Water was freezing but we did see some people swimming! Very quiet and peaceful and we had spectacular weather considering mid November!
Lovely water. We parked in a small, free carpark to walk up Rannderdale Knotts. The view from above was absolutely stunning over Crummock Water.
Absolutely stunning. A mixture of beautiful water views and fairytale forest. I leave about 4 hrs to walk around the whole lake. You can also stop in buttermere for something to eat.
Our second family walk around this beautiful lake. It really is a great day out. The National Trust car park makes a great starting point. Especially as this makes the pub the perfect halfway point! The path is easy to follow and the walk isn't too challenging.
Crummock Water is an absolutely stunning and peaceful spot in the Lake District—perfect if you're looking to escape the crowds. Surrounded by dramatic fells like Grasmoor and Mellbreak, the views are breathtaking and the atmosphere is incredibly tranquil. There are some lovely walks around the lake, and the area is ideal for wild swimming, picnics, or just soaking in the scenery. Highly recommend if you want a quiet, natural experience in one of the most beautiful parts of the Lakes.
By far one of the most beautiful lakes in the whole lake district, and its also really close to Buttermere so you can easily visit both lakes in the same day. The sun sets behind the fells and it's so beautiful. We went on a rainy day and was still such a stunning place, its one of my favourites.
Had a wonderful walk here, absolutely stunning location and very peaceful when we went. Car park is national trust so free for members. The lake is wonderful and so calm and still. Views are breathtaking
A beautiful lake, pastoral, relaxing, and romantic. There are also many easy or difficult hiking trails that are highly recommended.

Wonderful hike to scale Force. It's a stunning waterfall tucked away on the side of Red Pike near Buttermere. The hike is a little technical at times due to erosion of the trail but nothing to complete. If you get to the waterfall erly you will probably have it to yourself. Absolutely stunning location.
Such a rewarding hike once you reach the waterfall, you can climb up the first part and get to the main waterfall at the back. Just be mindful of the rocks as they can be very slippery
Moderate but fun Hike, Some Boggie Parts so Bring Waterproof Boots, well worth the walk.
After a long, scenic walk we enjoyed this treasure. The sound of the waterfall, clean, clear water. Ideal spot for mindfulness sessions. Loved it.
Fantastic place for a day trip. Highly recommend to climb hire to actual waterfall. It is challenging climb, so not for everyone but definitely worth it!
Wow, what a beautiful place to visit, wear waterproof shoes though as it’s a tad boggy. A must visit location
Lovely walk from buttermere village, heading towards buttermere lake but instead turn right and follow the track. You will walk through some very narrow peices and head towards crummock water but you will soon start to follow the track left and start to climb up. Lovely water fallespcially after it has been raining. Kids loved it and I loved the views.
Beautiful walk to find this gem. We parked in an overflow car park near the Buttermere Court Hotel (prev called the Fish Inn), the pub/cafe servicing here is called, the High Stile Kitchen Pub, Buttermere. Derek, a friendly volunteer for the Mountain Rescue charity showed us to the car park, £5.00 all day, cash. There were other car parks that had machines and charged by the hour. This was a very business village, quite narrow entries in to the village with many vehicles parked along road, causing some sharp intakes of breath. The village itself has a few shops, cafes, pubs, and a couple of campsites. Lots of sheep (keep dogs on lead). You can access the waterside, suitable for push chairs and wheelchairs and the less able, however walking the whole way around the lake can be difficult in parts, with climbing, clambering over inclines and rocky paths. You can avoid this section by walking in the road, but there is no path, and a lot of cars to watch out for. My family and dogs chose this base and walked up to Scale Force waterfall, which was even more difficult and challenging underfoot but was worth it.

It certainly is a charming little church at the junction of the Honister and Newlands passes. There is a rough (free) car park just up behind the church. Lovely to have the church open during the day. Unusual iron shepherd gate (1968) at the entrance to this 1840 built church. The font bowl is from an earlier chapel of ease. Some fine stained glass, and by one window a memorial tablet to Alfred Wainwright - look by the organ.
Lovely little church. The needlepoint hassocks at each seat are works of art, well worth the climb up a very steep hill so be warned! Charming place, don’t miss it.
Charming little church, parking free just beyond the church for about 20 cars, no amenities here but a short walk into Buttermere Originally built in 1500s but present church was built in the 1840s Usually open for a visit and still holds srro
Charming little church. Can be problems with parking
Quaint little church that makes a great starting point to the circular walk around Buttermere. Free roadside parking just up the hill from the church.
Beautiful views and a fantastic location to start a walk.
Fine little church
Has a free carpark just above the Chapel which is open 24/7. The carpark is small but extends onto road side parking. It gets filled quick so get there early or in rhe evening.

This waterfall above Buttermere was just amazing.. . a short walk from the car park and easy to access, though the final ascent to the top was very rocky and slippery! But the views were just glorious ...
Stunning place! The drive leading to the waterfall offers breathtaking views and you can already see it from the route. The waterfall is located literally next to a free car park so you don’t have to walk far. There is a hike leading further up next to it too. Worth popping by to see such a beauty! Views are stunning.
A beautiful area. Great view of the waterfall from the car park (which is free). A steep climb to the top, or base of the waterfall but fantastic views that make it worth it
Stopped off on my way to Buttermere definitely worth while stopping it's a 15-minute walk to Moss Force waterfall from the carpark. There are some absolutely stunning views from the top.
Just unbelievable, you could see almost the whole course of the waterfall from the top of the mountain. Beautiful green space all around. Very good condition of the road (visited in summer). Plenty of free parking below the waterfall. No tickets needed.
Lovely waterfall short walk from car park. Road getting there was very scenic. Just amazing
Very short walk from the car park to the falls. Can be slippy. Beautiful.
Worth a visit, parking is free and easy, paths are well maintained, easy and short walk to the falls
