Beach known for its dwarf mangrove trees, calm water for swimming & views of the sunset.

Pantai Walakiri in Sumba Timur is a hidden paradise waiting to be discovered. The sunsets here are simply breathtaking, with a kaleidoscope of colors that dance across the horizon. The serene atmosphere, coupled with the sound of waves gently crashing against the shore, creates a peaceful ambiance perfect for relaxation and reflection. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a photographer, or simply looking for a serene escape, Pantai Walakiri is sure to leave a lasting impression.
Located near Waingapu, approximately 30 minutes driving. If you are a nature enthusiast or photographer you must visit it. Of course the best time to visit this beach is during the late afternoon to witness the stunning sunset because this beach is famous for the silhouette of twisted mangrove trees trunk during sunset. There are basic amenities like restrooms and small eateries available.
Really enjoyed this beach. Of course, there are the dancing trees to see - best at low tide, of course, and if you can walk around the corner to the West even better. We went during the day, when quiet, although in the late afternoon I can imagine it getting busy. A few shacks selling kelapa muda. Surprisingly, there don't seem to be food warungs. Considering the sunsets and location, I would have thought that they would have been popular here. Loses a star as if it's been raining the nearby river runoff really clouds the water...I had done some great snorkelling before the rains came but was really disappointed with the visibility (= none!) after the rains. BTW, it's quite a swim out before the coral.....maybe 20 minutes!....the beach slopes very gradually.
Such a photogenic beach. The way the horizon just blending in with the ocean and when the sun sets, hitting the water, it was an amazing experience. The mangrove(?) forest looked like a Dali’s painting as well. It was surreal.
Nice place to hang out watching the sunset. The beach is famous for the 'dancing mangrove' but apparently it wasnt as beautiful as expected. It was a very small part of the beach and only consist of about a dozen of mangrove tree. I was actually expecting something big and vast.. 😅😅 To the west of the beach is a typical mangrove forest and to the west is a nice white sandy beach with shallow water, nice enough to play around. Several food vendors on the beach offering food.
Calm and quiet beach in the Northern part of East Sumba. The perfect time to visit this place is during low tide around sunset time. Many photographers go to this place for taking photos of the dancing mangrove trees. If you visit this place during high tide, you won't be able to see the full dancing trees.
Great spot for Photography (if you come in the right season) otherwise it will be to shallow and the sunset will not be that beautiful (well, in my case it has too much clouds). If you come here, you have to find a perfect spot to capture the sunset, otherwise there will be too much people disturbing your picture. But remember, you need to give their some time as well. And please !! Do not littering !!!
It was a good place for sunset photography where the main attractions are the weird shaped looking so called “dancing” trees. Despite the sexy example being shown in the internet, we just realized that the big dancing trees has died off due to the locals carelessness. Many of the kids climbed onto the tree causing the mangrove trees that has an outward roots to easily got rooted out with these additional extra pressure Now the people are trying to grow back the trees but until the next 3 years you will have to suffice with the existing tiny ones. Depending on your photograpy level, you can still make do with a cool picture though! P.S: many stranded blobs of jellyfishes on the shore of the beach.

Breathtaking view of never ending hills, can sit there for hours but no place to sit. So much potential to build this is main tourist destination. Best to do sunrise and sunset view and also midnight sky gazing.
Unusual savanna views. I thought the grassland was due to deforestation, but it isn't. 10k per person to get in. Can rent a traditional cloak for 50k, walk with a horse for 50k and get on a horse for 100k. Can buy the cloak for 1.5m, but they aren't made from traditional colourings, so a bit expensive even when factoring it is a tourist spot. There are toilets of a sort (5k). Short walk up some steps to a nice viewpoint. 30 minutes max should do it.
One of the best natural scenery I've ever seen. On this hill we can enjoy the sunset. Accompanied by local residents, you can rent Sumba cloth to take pictures, or take photos with horses. Just enjoying the atmosphere already makes the eyes happy. Attention to visitors and local residents, please keep this location clean. Do not bring food / drink so that there is no trash. Thank You. Terima kasih🙏🏻☺️
The hills are beautiful, magnificent sunset here. Not too far to go up from parking area, cemented stairs. You can hear the children's laughter. The wind is a bit cold. You can rent traditional clothing for IDR 50,000; take pictures with the horse IDR 25,000 per person. The kids are friendly and won't bother you at all. They have toilet too.
Wairinding Hill in Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, stands as a testament to the island's breathtaking landscapes. This hidden gem offers a panoramic view that is nothing short of spectacular. Upon reaching the summit of Wairinding Hill, visitors are greeted with a vast expanse of rolling hills and lush greenery. The gentle breeze carries the essence of nature, providing a serene atmosphere that captivates the soul. The picturesque scenery unfolds like a painting, showcasing the untouched beauty of Sumba. The highlight of Wairinding Hill is undoubtedly the stunning sunset. As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky transforms into a canvas of warm hues, casting a golden glow over the landscape. It's a moment that leaves visitors in awe, making Wairinding Hill a must-visit spot for those seeking a peaceful retreat and a captivating visual experience. Whether you're an avid photographer, a nature enthusiast, or someone looking for a tranquil escape, Wairinding Hill promises a brief but enchanting journey into the natural wonders of Sumba, creating memories that linger long after the visit." Thw view is amazing, but the parking space is minimum. There's only a little bit of stairs to climb. Great place tor ake picture and see the true magnificent view of sumba
I love it. Beautiful view and we took photo with the horses. The people were nice and the horses looks healthy. They were beautiful family horses for sure.
One stop on the way to Walakiri Beach. The endless varying hights of grassland with the low hanging cloud will make you feel like you are in somewhere else other than in a tropical island. Deserves a drop-by.

Watuparunu beach is located In east Sumba. I think this is one of the best beach in Sumba. You can see horses are playing around and local people are looking for seaweeds. Local people are super friendly and very welcome when you're visit here.
Worth the visit, at low tide you can walk on the beach along the cliffs.
far from life. bring food and drink. must visit during 3pm-4pm. best view!
Amazing view of huge and high wall of reef from the Pleiocene era extending along the way of white sandy beach of Watuparunu
A great place, so many interesting spot all in one place. Such a wide flat beach, hollow rock and carved cliff.
So far from town. The view is not really good for me. It's not worth it to drive so long only to went to this beach. Maybe it has something special that I don't know.
Photography is great here, but the beach has no amenities and not well maintained. Need to go in groups.
It is a nice beach, clean, but also completely empty when we were there. SO even no warung. If you like this bring your own drinks and food and enjoy.

One of the many beautiful waterfalls in Sumba, it is located in East Sumba. You have to walk 20 minutes from the parking area to the waterfalls, and the path are pretty steep, but it is paid off once you see the beautiful waterfalls. Oh ya the allow you to dip into the water there
Well maintain of the tracking path. This waterfall just maintain by a local guy who built the stairs and collect the trash of visitors. Very clean area of the tracking path. The waterfall is small but very lovely with blue water. There is toilet and it’s pretty clean. No tickets retribution, only need to pay parking fee. But I would like to recommend you to give him more because he is very care about the environment.
Nice waterfall to visit and swim in! From the parking area, its about a 20 min walk down to the waterfall and its free to enter. The road to the waterfall is not shown on Google maps / open steet maps. From Melolo follow the signs for the waterfall. Once you turn off the main road follow the unpaved road (this does not show on Google maps). You will eventually reach a small village which you need to pass through and then take a sharp left turn. This road then leads to the parking area of the waterfall. Tour groups seem to visit in the morning until about 2pm which means the place can get quite busy as it is quite small. If you want it to yourself come early morning or in the afternoon.
The Wai Marang waterfall was not hard to find using google maps and the satellite function. We went here by car and the road was alright. The hike from the parking to the waterfall was ok but when it's raining I can imagine some parts being slippery. When we got to the waterfall we were the only people there and it was nice to dive into the fresh water.
Pretty good road from Waingapu to the village. Only a few hundred meters are bad. You need to hike down for about 15 to 30 mins, depends on your speed, until you see the waterfall. Go on weekdays then you will have the waterfall like a private one. Ticket is only for vehicle. The lady sells mineral water (Rp5k) and instant noodles (Rp10to15k), very reasonable prices.
Waterfall Waimarang In the east of the island of Sumba. The road towards the waterfall again is a Mad Max meets Indiana Jones versus Lara Croft. When at the parking place it feels nice to have reached a resting place of tranquillity. 3 more adventures passages await 1. the stairway, flip flops 2. The vulcano rock, flip flops 3. The Indiana Jones, no flip flops Then, finally there is the gorgeous waterfall.
Great, clean, fresh, and very beautiful waterfall! Like a hidden paradise! We must prepare our fit body to go there because from the parking place (on the top of hill) we walk by feet in narrow & rocky tracking way, about 2 km. But worth to go!
I was hesitated in the beginning because people said it's very hard and a bit dangerous. But at the end I got courage to do this, and it's totally worth it. You need approx 20-30 minute trekking down walk through the forest to the waterfall. Little bit slippery at the end, but good things now they put some bamboo on the side of the dangerous part so you can grab that and hold on it while you trekked down. You must be very fit if you want to reach the waterfall. But once you are there, all you can do is amazed with the beauty of the green, blue , tosca pond. Jump, swim and enjoy the water as it will refresh you. Don't forget to put some sunblock because the heat sting. The trip go back up is a bit tricky when you wet, it will be easier if you dry yourself/ change before hike up

Ikat village. I stayed here for 2nights. It’s a magical place for me as a textile design practitioner. Everyone in this village works for ikat. You can see people weaving and spinning, tied and dyed yarns everywhere. This scenery has to be preserved in a healthy manner. What is more, people are really kind. I want to come back in future.
This traditional village, located in the town of Waikabubak, is a must-see for anyone passing through this part of the world. Set on a hilltop in a quiet corner of the city, it features dozens of traditional houses and megaliths. It is very much a living community, with cats, dogs, pigs and horses housed alongside hundreds of residents. This is no sanitised museum piece but an ancient village still holding onto its traditions.
Arranged a lunch here, and although the lady was absolutely lovely and the portions generous, it just wasn't for me. 300 idr for the three of us. They also sell those throws/ponchos (wrong continent! Anyway, whatever they are called!) We didn't buy as we had already bought elsewhere. There's not much to see, TBH. The traditional houses mostly have tin (zinc?) roofs, and the traditional weavers aren't many.....
One stop place for you to understand East Sumba History, see their beautiful traditional houses, and unleash your crazy shopping animal side. They sell lots of type of accessories from necklaces, earrings, headband and all pther stuff. Various selection of traditional weaved fabric from 500k to more than 10 million rupiah. Enjoy!
A must-visit Traditional Village in East Sumba. There are many locals who sell their ikat weaving and handicrafts. You can also try their traditional costume here. Most of the ikat weavings they sell are natural dyes, and they grow some of the ingredient of these natural dyes near their houses. Also, there are some tombstones in the middle of the village compound.
Fantastic village! It's really about the people there - the village chief and his family are lovely and they shared lots of information about their culture with us. Nobody tried to sell anything to us and we felt very safe (unlike other villages). You won't find the biggest houses there, but nice tombs. They have two nice villas for tourists - unfortunately, it was our last day in Sumba and we couldn't give it a try. You can find them online.
A bit touristy, but still ok, very authentic. Friendly people, willing to talk, trying to sell their original cloth but not forcing you to buy.
A good place to know more about Sumba and its people with history and their culture. In the midst of the city, this King Village still survive and preserved by its people.

It's located at Ndayapami,Kanatang, East Sumba. The road is average good, but some bit rocky and bumpy. It's a small road. The weather was very hot when I arrived at Tanggedu Waterfall. It was October. From the parking area, you have to walk 2 km to reach the waterfall. You can take a motorcycle taxi for Rp 50,000 round-trip if you're not in the mood for walking. But you still have to climb 200 steps. And you'll be rewarded with a beautiful and spectacular view. The water is crystal clear between the rocks. There are areas where swimming is prohibited. There are also areas where swimming is permitted. It's best to obey the instructions of the officers and local residents. They are more aware of the dangers. There are stalls selling young coconuts and various snacks around the waterfall. Please take your trash with you. Don't leave any trash around the waterfall as there are no trash bins. Let's protect, care for, and preserve our Sumba. I love Sumba♡ Greetings from me, a visitor from Bandung
To reach waterfall, there are 2 options: walk which is not recommended, since the distance not near yet not far, and no trees for shelter. Another one you rent local motorcycle for 50k. Then there is stairs to go down to reach waterfall. So remember, you have to climb the stairs to go back 😀 But it's worth it, nice view. You also can swim there.
Great spot! A bit of a trek (by car) to get to. Most of the road newly tarred. 10k for locals to get in. 25k for tourists. 10k to park (car). Safe walk down some steps, then a short scramble. Coconut (20k each) and pot noodle sellers at the bottom. Very pretty waterfall / canyon. Amazing undulating hills. Safe to swim where the coconut sellers are. Maybe 30 minutes walk to get to the waterfall.
This place is magical! The location is quite remote and car can only reach to the parking area. After that you need to continue on walk around 15 to 40 minutes. There are motorcycle taxi that offers their service to take you to the waterfall entrance for around 50.000 rupiah. From the entrance to the waterfall there are small path and steps down to the location which is better than last time I went here. There are restroom and also changing room in this area but for trash, you need to bring your own plastic bag since it was difficult to find trash bin. The river and view was soooo amazing!
Waterfall Tanggendu Not that many visitors. The road towards the waterfall is a mad max meets Indiana Jones. An adventure. Some local scooter drivers are available at a cost or walk the mile to the next stop. Then there is a stairway to the waterfall. Huge waterfall that flows into pools. In some pools the current is too strong to swim. Some pools are perfect for a bath. On top of the big drop off you could walk. Behind it are perfect pools.
It was a very beautiful experience. I would love to go back there. The track was memorable but I heard they've built some sort of pavements all the way up there that some friends complained it didn't feel like a real nature walk anymore.
Great waterfall to visit and swim! We visited in the early aftenoon and basically had the place to ourselves. It starts to get busier around sunset. Recommend arriving before 3pm to see the sunlight on the main waterfall. Once you leave the coast road from Waingapu the road starts to deteriorate slightly but we had no issue traveling by scooter. If you travel by scooter you can ride all the way to the steps to the waterfall, which saves you around a 20 min walk. Entry fee is 25k pp for foreigners and an additional 10k if you take your scooter (parking at the ticket booth 5k).
Beautiful waterfall with rock formation. To go there, from the car park area, you can walk around 1,2km to the entrance of Tanggedu. You can pay to go to the entrance of Tanggedu using motorbike for IDR 50,000 for back and forth. You need to hire a local guide so they can lead the way to the waterfall. You'll face the stairs of 240 steps to go down. No kids who will annoy you. You can pay as you wish for the local guide. They have toilet here.
