Medieval-era horse & rider carved in relief on a cliff face, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It's only the Madara rider there but you can also climb to the fortress and have beautiful views!
You need to sit for a bit to see the details they believe to be there, but overall: cool to be at the place where Bulgarias name was mentioned for the first time. No handrails and quite a lot of stairs. There are four benches to sit. The „longer but easier way“ has no handrails either and still a few stairs- not wheelchair accessible!
Situated on a natural slope of Shumen Plateau in nort-east Bulgaria, the Madara Horseman it's a medieval rock bas relief from 7th Century AD, preserved in quite fair conditions and recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage. You only have a few kilometers road loop, from the Sofia - Varna highway, in order to see this important historical site.
Well maintained place and beautiful views and so many little trails around. Use hiking shoes even though there are steps they are not even and avoid using no grip shoes like sneakers or flat based shoes. Going up to watch the fortress people who have fear of hights can climb up to the little metal bridge that connects two bolders. It provides you with a great view of the 180 digress. Tickets are priced fairly. ( 7lev for adults) Plenty of restaurants in the surrounding villages are very quiet and less bus. You hardly see anyone. Bring your own trash back home and avoid throwing them in the bins there so nature is less stressed. Please leave only your footprints in this place. Speak softly not to disturb other tourists around. ( There were few local who were behaviour was not appropriate shouting and howling and the other kids around to copied this unethical behaviour. We visited in 1st week of September and the weather was great and the forest provides you shade and it's Preethi cool weather.
Great experience full of opportunities to learn about history, walk beautiful trails and take photos. There’s also a few small shops close by that offer food/drinks/coffee, etc! One of the people in our group did find a tick on them the next day, so be aware and use bug spray if you can.
The best historical landmark I've seen recently. It is a whole park with different points of interest, also several trekking paths are starting from there. There are places of energy one can feel. The caves are breathtaking, You need to spend more time there. The rock chapel is also incredible. A must see.
Very nice historical park, including some great nature spots for relaxation and climbing, hiking. Do not miss the several springs, the view from the Matora fortress, the sequoia planted by the last (in reign) Bulgarian king Boris III.
Place of great historical value and excellent location for family recreation. Dramatic view from the plateau above the boulder. Have your phone / camera battery fully charged for memories to last!

the enormous number of stairs on the way to the statue was absolutely worth it and it felt so rewarding to finally be face to face with such monument. at the moment we arrived in shumen we immediately decided that we would climb those thousand stairs even though we were just on a day trip. it surprisingly didn't take us as long as we anticipated and we only had to ask for directions was and that was at the very beginning of the journey, from then on it was smooth sailing. it was such a peaceful and beautiful experience to be immersed in nature and the history that lay within.
Nice monument. Worth the visit if you are in the Shumen area. The entrance is about 3 USD per person. There is a big parking lot nearby, but there are no toilets or cafes.
Amazing monument - they also gave us a slip with detailed information about the monument, as well as an interesting audio book that was available in both English and Bulgarian (not sure about other languages). The view was breathtaking too!
Great brutalistic monument with a solid view. Cheap, reachable by car and you also receive one A4 with information in English :)
This is absolute a “must see” if anywhere near Shumen. I’ve traveled a lot, and never seen anything quite like it. Built to commemorate the 1300th anniversary of the founding of the Bulgarian Kingdom, it’s a real source of pride for all Bulgarians. When I visited, both staff at the ticket office spoke excellent English - and tours are available. They also made sure I had the brochure in English and noted a QR code for more info. Don’t miss the small museum in the parking lot which features a very well done 12 minute video on the design and creation of the monument, including interviews with stonemasons who worked on it. Plenty of parking.
Unique and spectacular piece of art. And the details and the stunning view to the plateau.... You need to experience it
Impressive example of brutalism style, monumental size and yet interesting for children and adults.
A Monumental Tribute to History The Monument to the Founders of the Bulgarian State near Shumen is truly a sight to behold. Towering high above the city from a nearby mountain, this massive brutalist structure leaves a powerful impression long before you even reach it. Its sheer scale and bold geometric design are both awe-inspiring and humbling. The monument doesn’t just dominate the landscape—it tells a story. Walking through it feels like stepping into a piece of history, with impressive sculptures and detailed elements that honor the birth and strength of the Bulgarian nation. It’s a place that commands respect and reflection. What makes the experience even more special is the breathtaking panoramic view of Shumen below. The contrast between the raw concrete forms and the natural beauty surrounding the monument adds to its dramatic presence. Whether you’re a fan of history, architecture, or just love discovering places off the beaten path, this monument is absolutely worth the visit.

It is the largest mosque from the Ottoman period in the Balkans. It was quite crowded when I went for Eid prayer.
On a cloudy day, the old and damaged front sign is giving off eerie Chernobyl vibes. Quite spooky, quite nice
Masha Allah Such historical mosque. Well maintained and functional Imam gave us a full history of the mosque. The architecture and painting is stunning.
Beautiful mosque. There is an entry fee. Worth a visit
if anyone is actually Muslim using this so called mosque they should be ashamed. Not allowed to enter unless you pay money .. never heard of that in any mosque in the world I've been in hundreds of mosques .. I only have credit card so they told me you can not go inside
Beautifull structure , like a piece of art. And the guide is super friendly
Very beautiful as a Muslim myself and the Imam and quran teacher are very nice people
Thank you for the tour given to us of your beautiful mosque

Great location near the pedestrian zone in the city center. The room was large and clean. The breakfast was very delicious with a variety of food.
4-star is super misleading for customers, it is at best a poor 3-star hotel. - Gym and SPA not working for years - clogged shower drain - hair on the towels - only cleaning service is to empty the trash cans. Restaurants and taverns were also closed but probably due to Christmas holidays. For 55€ a night without breakfast you can find many better alternatives. On the plus side, bed was big and comfortable, heating was ok and mini bar was full. Overall, would not recommend.
The breakfast was very delicious. The staff is very kind and hotel location is perfect. The room was large and very comfortable.
Very clean for this price range! Everyone at the reception and in the restaurant in the lobby were very pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was very rich and prepared on the spot (choose one of 4 options for breakfast). Panorama restaurant on 7th floor was very good with excellent menu. Only minus is that it's open from 6pm. Overall very nice experience!
A lovely stay here, good prices, nice accommodations, the room was very modern clean and had everything you need ! The meal we had at night was absolutely fabulous!!! One of the best we have had in a long time here in bg. Bravo well done and thanks But - the breakfast was 1/10 omg was sooo bad , even a simple banitsa wasn’t good , old bread , sausages were the cheapest Frankfurter style when Bulgaria do the best home made sausages, if we were producing this breakfast we would provide Bulgarian home made products of good quality, breakfast is the last impression that can be made at a hotel and it should be a good one .
This is a great place. Wonderful USSR architectural style, updated just enough to make it more comfortable without losing its edge. Affordable, clean rooms (the hallways not so clean, quite dusty...), good WiFi and free parking.
Glad to see a hotel from the old socialist times working and in good shape, with refurbished rooms and good restaurant. Staff is friendly and the majority speaks English. The views are great if you get a room in the higher floors, or I can recommend checking out the panoramic restaurant on top of the hotel. Too bad there is a hard time for a vegan to find a suitable meal. The breakfast is ok, but the coffee is substandard.
The location of the hotel is good and the view from our room (6th floor) was nice. There were cupcakes and easter eggs as a compliment to the guests. The staff are very professional, friendly and helpful. The hotel is clean even with the white colour dominating in the interior. The bed was very comfortable. The restaurant in the hotel offers delicious quality food and the server (Tosho) was very professional and entertaining.

I've just visited the place and was extremely impressed by the service of a young girl. Her name is Ramona. She is a very polite and helpful. She helped us to choose from the menu as we could not read the small print on it. As soon as we mentioned the problem she offered to help and did it with a very polite manner. Great job Ramona Thank you so much
Waited 30 min for cappuccino and a fresh.
Cool place, but the service is slow which can be irritating
Great place! Nice sandwiches.
The best place to go to in Shumen! Menu is well attended to with balanced cocktails and light food appearance. Highly recommend!
Best bar in town ! Good service, quality cocktails, hot waitresses. Check it out. 5 stars

I am very impressed from this place. For the evenings it's a very good choice for fun and for the day is the perfect choice for good coffee and food. The atmosphere is modern and pleasant and the staff is very nice. The service is perfect. Strongly recommend this place
In a such style of business with a few tables we can't keep the majorities of the tables as reserved during hours before the customers who reserved arrive, that shows the leak of knowledge about how to manage a such activity . The barmen are skilled the service staffs are fast and friendly.the music? Depends on when and DJ is pleasant but usually the same style of music and always too high volume which makes the customers shutting for speaking between them. They don't have Foods some snacks.they need the wise manager .
So my ethnicity is bulgarian and english but i’ve never been to my hometown Shumen before this was my first day here and Bareto Coffe and Cocktails Club is awful the food is okay the service is awful and the atmosphere is good, but the tables are soo dirty it’s disgusting please if you see this and work at Bareto please do something because if you keep going like that you will loose not only me but others clients too.Shameful
Nice staff. Good prices. Amazing menu.
Here you can have good cocktails and besy service. Thank you for Pavel
Great atmosphere, very good cocktails and service
