I’m not a whiskey lover but a free entrance to learn about the humble beginning of this whiskey was awesome! My husband loved this place and LOVED seeing the evolution of their product! Made me more appreciative of whiskey connoisseurs. We were able to purchase whiskey only sold after taking a tour so that was very novel. We also had a flight of whiskey only available at the distillery which was worth it as well. I highly recommend if you love whiskey and have time to venture out of Kyoto for a few hours.
Great opportunity for tasting Suntory Yamazaki whiskey that one cannot find anywhere else. We called ahead to book the museum tour with options for tasting various whiskeys. If you cannot find availability on the Suntory Yamasaki website for the tasting, I recommend calling the distillery the day before to see if there is availability. The Spanish Oak casket finish and the 18 year were our favorite tasting. If you liked what you tasted one can purchase small bottles in the gift shop, however not all bottles were available, and to purchase larger bottles, you will need to plan ahead and win a spot on the distillery tour lottery. My only complaint was that we couldn’t purchase larger bottles of the Spanish Oak cask finished whiskey or the 18 year.
Very disappointed. Do not trust all those positive reviews and take a look at the lowest review to have a better view on reality of this distillery. Travelled half the world to hear that it was fully booked. When a week earlier trying to book a tour, it was rejected with the advise to buy a ticket at the entrance gate. It was not busy at all. It seems they artificially keep it sold out so to be able to raise the price. Never had such treatment at Scottish distilleries ever. Was not even allowed to visit the gift shop. Will not ever buy this whisky again. There are many much better whiskies anyway. Mind that there are much better alternatives such as the whisky lab in Gion distict of Kyoto or the Nagahama distillery (1 hour from Kyoto).
This is a really beautiful distillery and worth the trek to get to. We booked for the free tasting / self-guided tour about a month in advance. You need a reservation for a tasting or tour. You'll need to pay foe the tasting itself and you get to enjoy it in their beautiful tasting room. The gift shop was nice, some great gifts. You won't find, at least now, most of the full sized bottles. I did up finding some at the liquor stores in Tokyo though before we left Japan (don't wait to find at the airport). Beautiful setting in a nice quiet area. Totally worth visiting if you are into great whiskey.
Had a really enjoyable time touring and tasting the whiskeys at the Yamazaki Distillery. I would highly recommend coming here if you get the chance (you need to enter a lottery to get the chance). The tour is 3000 yen and comes with a tour of their whisky making processes, a tasting and a souvenir. There is a limited whisky you can only get from doing the tour and you should definitely buy it. You don't get another chance once you walk out of the tasting. The tour is in Japanese l, but they have an app that will tell you what's going on at each stop in your language. The tour guides were informative and friendly and we got to see, smell and taste 5 of their whiskeys at the tasting. Like I mentioned before, you should go if you have the chance.
The tour here is really worth it. For 3000 you get to walk around the distillery, then do a tasting session with 4 + 1 whiskies. The +1 is to make a Yamazaki highball. Then after you can buy a bottle. After it's possible to go to the gift shop. There is also a bar there were you can buy a den taste rarer whiskies in 30ml measures. There are also a few flights for tasting comparison.
This distillery offers paid guided tour to visitors who are interested in factory tour for whisky production. The tour requires reservation and a lucky draw to enter. The tour is quite informative and has whiskey tasting session at the end which you can taste raw whiskey and the blended product, with pure and highball style. Some tasting notes is offered so that you can learn some basic techniques in the session. The tour price is quite reasonable but it is not a pleasant tour under hot weather.
I had a fantastic experience at the Suntory distillery tour this morning. The staff were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, making the visit both educational and enjoyable. A special thank you to the gentleman who translated for us and took beautiful photos—his kindness and professionalism really made the experience memorable. I highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in whisky and Japanese craftsmanship!

Coming here to see the wind chime 🎐🎐 You can enter for free, but you have to pay to go to the park. I think around 300-600 yen per person. Can't review too much because unfortunately I didn't come inside the park. But I do believe that the view inside must be breathtaking. Because even only in the free area, the furin was beautiful and heart warming.
Beautiful shrine famous for its well water and wind chimes! 🎐 The well water is famous (top 100 water places in Japan!) and locals wait to fill up bottles (20L limit). I happily filled my water bottle while there. I really came for the beautiful wind chimes! So lovely and peaceful. This shrine also has beautiful stamps/art for sale as souvenirs.
Even if it was heavy rain, it was a very special spiritual atmosphere. Worth to visit!

(Translated by Google) Located on the outskirts of Osaka, Minase Shrine is home to the "Rikyu no Mizu," a water source selected as one of Japan's 100 most famous springs. If you visit, you'll understand: it's a sacred place that leaves you feeling incredibly refreshed.✩︎⡱ Nearby, there's the Suntory whiskey distillery and beer factory, and it's said that wherever there's whiskey, there's also delicious, clean water. It's almost in Kyoto, but I think it's one of the few places where nature remains. I don't want to say it too loudly, but this mountain river has a beautiful valley, and in the summer, there's a lovely spot where children play in the river.^ ^ In Osaka's Hokusetsu region, Settsukyo Gorge is also famous, but this place is truly blessed with precious nature and a very pleasant atmosphere.♬ Minase Shrine is located in a surprisingly residential area, and it's a truly sacred place that has been loved by locals for many years.^ ^ Locals often come here to collect water, so if you're here, be sure to bring a water bottle and enjoy the natural water. The parking lot is spacious and safe, but please note that the roads are narrow in some places and the area is residential, so please use your navigation system and drive slowly and quietly. (It can get confusing if you get lost, lol.) I visited at the end of July, and it seems that nighttime viewing is also possible at this time of year.♪ I think it would be very charming to enjoy the illuminated wind chimes when the temperature cools down a bit.^ ^ Please be sure to observe proper etiquette when you visit.✩︎⡱ (Original)
(Translated by Google) I visited around 3 PM on a weekday. The main gate is a little hard to find, but it's on the west side. There's also a large parking lot next to it. To the right of the approach, there were adorable wind chimes made by children from a nearby kindergarten. 😁 The sound of the wind chimes echoing along with the breeze throughout the temple grounds creates a refreshing feeling. Apparently, there are about 1,000 wind chimes hanging from the ceiling! ️ It's truly a summer tradition! ✨ The temple grounds are home to many Important Cultural Properties and Nationally Designated Cultural Properties, each one telling of its rich history. ️ The water pump next to the chozuya (purification fountain) on the grounds is so famous that locals come here to get their hands on it. Apparently, it's been selected as one of Japan's 100 Famous Waters! ️ There are plenty of other things to see, too! 😁 It's a 10-15 minute walk from both Minase Station on the Hankyu Kyoto Main Line and Shima Station on the JR Lines. It appears to be open 24 hours a day. Reception is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Only initially went there for the Distillery, but after seeing it closed due to New Years, our group decided to check out the shrine. Initially we thought it was your run of the mill shrine, but being far away from tourists spots and freeways made it the most tranquil shrine we visited. the tall trees near the shrine made for amazing photos, and the trail behind it was a vary fun path, but because we were ill equipped for the path we had to turn around sooner then we wanted to. Overall amazing shrine and would recommend!!!
(Translated by Google) 2024/12/7 This year it was warmer than usual, and the autumn leaves🍁 looked nice😌 I had a chance to talk to a woman who was wearing Fallen Leaves, and I was even more curious about the company whose name I didn't know. Also, maybe I just didn't notice it until now, but the fox 🦊, which is enshrined at Inari, was beautifully decorated ✨ I visited this shrine for the first time this spring, and the various flowers that bloom each season made me want to come again next year. 2024/5/9 The saxifrage flowers were blooming. I used to think that it was a rare flower that only bloomed in some parts of Kyoto, but when I looked into it, I realized that it blooms in a lot more places than I expected😅 However, at first I thought it was rare, so even now when I find it, it's a cute flower and makes me happy😌✨ By the way, on this day there was something on the truck at the Yamazaki Whiskey Factory next to the shrine⛩? As I was loading the trucks, I became concerned and asked the people working there what they were loading, even though I thought they were busy at work. Then They said, ``Load the unprocessed sake and transport it to Hakushu''😌 I just passed by the Hakushu factory in Nagano less than a week ago, and it felt strange 😅 2024/4/8 I didn't know where to park my car, but there was a bicycle parking lot, so I parked my bike. There were no people around, the stone wall looked like a castle, and the flowers and trees blooming around it gave it a very sacred feeling. Is there a mountain trail behind the main shrine? There was a long road, so I walked for about 30 minutes and then turned back. On the way [Iwaza? ] There was a place like this, and I personally thought it was amazing 😌 Near the torii gate ⛩ at the entrance, you can smell the whiskey from the [Yamazaki Whiskey Factory] and think, ``Maybe the god here likes whiskey more than alcohol 🍶?''

The person who made it was Gyoki, who is famous for the Great Buddha in Nara. Furthermore, it is said that the founder of Shugendo, Kozumi Yaku, practiced ascetic practices in this deep valley, enshrined Fudo Myoo in front of the waterfall, and invited Benzaiten Shrine to the top of the mountain. In the Edo period, Kannonji, Hoshakuji, and Nishikannonji were lined up, and the Saigoku Kaido flourished as Yamazaki-shuku, according to the monument of Enma-do on Suntory's premises and the Komafuda of Shiio Shrine. However, in the Meiji period (1858), the government ordered the separation of Shinto and Buddhism and the abolition of anti-Buddhism, and Nishikannon-ji Temple was destroyed and disappeared. I thought so. I thought it was a nice shrine as there were hardly any tourists and it still had an old-fashioned atmosphere. It was really impressive that there was a barrel of Suntory wine inside the main hall. There is a [karahafu], which is long and seems to be a rare structure in Osaka. The entrance to the hiking course [Taikomichi] there is. 2024/5/5 The trip was supposed to be one night and two days, but due to too many detours, it ended up being two nights and three days, and just as I was about to get home, there was another festival going on. It started with a festival in Hino Town on the first day, and ended with this festival, and I was finally able to go home 😌 (Original)

This time it's cherry blossom season🌸 The cherry blossoms and other trees were magnificent. You can see the cityscape, and it's refreshing ✨ Two guardian dogs were enshrined in front of the main shrine. From the lower torii gate, you have to climb quite a bit. However, if you have a car, you can go up to the main shrine from the side street of the torii gate. Parking space 🅿️ and toilet 🚻 are also available. It also serves as a trailhead, so you can enjoy hiking as well. At this time, I was able to see the collaboration of cherry blossom blooming and autumn leaves sprouting 🌸🍁 (Original)
(Translated by Google) 5/3/2023 (Holiday) I went to the annual festival. After the priest's greeting, I was purified and the 4th part of the Izumo traditional performing arts began. In the 3rd part, Ebisu-sama was performing a fun performance of fishing for sea bream, and he went around the audience to hand out lucky rain 😉 It was a longevity candy, but it also had a punchline that made me laugh out loud! The main event was the famous "Iwami Kagura, Izumo's Yamata no Orochi Extermination"! He performed the struggle with the giant snake and the extermination in an easy-to-understand way. It was a great experience ☺️ End of May 2021 On the last Sunday of May under the state of emergency, I walked about 40 minutes from JR Shimamoto and Hankyu Minase towards the mountain to avoid crowds. I thought that there would be few people at a shrine in such a remote mountain area, so I climbed it. Oh 😵 😊 A shrine has been built in this place since the Asuka period and is still loved by the locals. The main hall has a distinctive roof called Mukai Karahafu, and inside you can see a large Suntory barrel and a photo of an offering from Iwami Kagura from Shimane. I'll come and see it next time! What's good about this shrine is that there are a lot of benches. People can eat their lunch, read, or look at the view. And hikers can take a break, and you can tell that everyone has climbed up to worship and improve their health. The bad thing is that there are a lot of bush mosquitoes. Even in summer, you'll need insect repellent spray if you're wearing long or short sleeves. Also, on your way back, it's best to follow the signs for the path to Shakushiro. If you walk about 10 minutes from the bamboo path, you'll see a different view, hehe 👌 (Original)

Beautiful temple, very quiet and peaceful & quite a few areas to explore. A bit of a walk from the bamboo forest but we had no idea about this temple, we walked by and saw it & made the spontaneous decision to go in, best decision! There was one other tourist! Pay at entrance.
Very large temple grounds. We spent easy an hour plus walking around. There are vending machines after you enter the grounds as well.
Accidently happened across this temple on the way to another one, and so glad we did. It is hands down one of my favorite temples in Kyoto. It is so peaceful with the garden and you can explore parts of the temple grounds. Easily spent an hr here and would come back again.
Worth a visit as you’re probably exploring the surrounding area (bamboo forest, other temples…). But it’s not particularly remarkable. It’s beautiful and well maintained as all the other temples around here, but if you’re merely visiting and you have no religious connection to the place, you may easily forget this temple later on. I would still check it out. You have to pay to enter, can’t remember how much it was, but it was 1000 yen or less.
Stumbled upon this temple while visiting the bamboo forest. We arrived around 9:30am and we were the only ones there. It was so gorgeous with all the fall foliage. There’s also a stunning view if you walk all the way up the stairs in the back and go to the right up the path!!
This quiet temple is located on the hill at the edge of Arashiyama, a short and pleasant walk from the more popular areas. We visited in early spring so the grounds were not at their best - I hear autumn is the best season to go - but worth a visit in any season. Aside from foliage, the main draw is the presence of historical graves in the grounds, including several of significant cultural interest. The graves are laid out over several levels, and the paths can be uneven and slippery, so take care and wear good shoes if you intend to explore. There's also a path leading up to a lookout with lovely views to the east over the city.
Stopped by by chance — unexpectedly cozy and peaceful. A quiet, beautiful place that’s perfect for a short visit.
The entrance fee is now 600¥ per person. A stunning spot to see autumn colours. The temple is also home to the graves of three emperors. Made our trip to the Bamboo Forest worth it.

A peaceful and beautiful temple to explore. We visited on a Friday and although many of the buildings were closed, it was still absolutely worth it. The grounds are stunning - very green, tranquil, and spacious. It feels different from some other temples, more immersive in nature. A lovely place for a quiet walk and to soak in the peaceful atmosphere.
A must see Kyoto attraction as a tourist. A bit far from the station, which was great for a more quiet, relaxing visiting. There's both paid and free areas, both are beautiful. Definitely worth a visit. Also one of the few temples where there's opportunities for tourists to take their shoes off and walk freely inside. Please be considerate of staff instructions and posted signage.
Amazing zen temple a bit away from main Kyoto attractions. There was not that many tourists there as in most popular temples which contributed to the calm and spiritual vibe. If you can I recommend going for matcha tea room there as it’s so beautiful and relaxing. I absolutely recommend coming there to enjoy cultural side of Kyoto.
A bit of walk to get to. The nearest bus stop is 10 minutes walk, but it takes you through a beautiful part of the city. Interesting aqueduct that's worth checking out. The grounds are very peaceful and the sound of running water is all around you.
The magnificent all-wood main hall is truly impressive. Don’t forget to go up to the second floor, where you can overlook the entire city of Kyoto. This is also one of the best spots for viewing autumn leaves.
The centre of Zen Buddhism in Japan! There is a few important cultural art pieces as well as stone gardens here. Great thing about this temple is they have English translation of the pieces. However, I am sure why they dont just recycle the plastic bags that hold your shoes for you. Seems wasteful to tell visitors to take them back home.
I went on a sunday morning in november, there were a lot of tourist buses and well, alot of people, even then i do recommend walking through the grounds, it is quite beautiful and at least at this time of the year, the trees are turning into their fall colors which makes it exra special. There is a trail to mount damji at the back of the temple grounds, though it is quite challenging so not for the feint of heart.
One of those Kyoto spots that are not as popular among tourists. Definitely worth the visit if you are around the area. 10/10 could have been more beautiful if the momiji was around.

Well-maintained, beautiful greens! Fairways pretty wide. Food very good. Staff services excellent. A bit more pricey compared to other courses around.
(Translated by Google) I played my first round early in the new year, and it was a good course. There is a wide variety of long holes and short holes, and some holes are challenging, such as crossing valleys and ponds in front of the green. On the way, there is a fork in the road to Shin-Osaka Golf, so be careful. ■Course It is a good course and is well maintained. The uphill hole is quite tough. The hall at the top offers a spectacular view from Kyoto to Takatsuki. I felt that the greens were mostly horizontal, so distance is important. Some holes are relatively short, so consider options other than driver. ■Lunch There are so many different types that it can be hard to decide which one to choose. There are not many mistakes, so you can rest assured♪ ■House The shoe box in the locker has an independent drawer, so it's very convenient to use and the space is more comfortable than other places. Beautiful temple and has a nice 'tunnel' lined trees leading to it. We went during the winter and it still has autumn leaves which looks amazing.
Visiting this temple will leave you in awe! Walking through the open corridors, soaking up the architecture and the beautiful Japanese landscaping. It’s definitely a memorable peaceful and serene visit. The monks are kind and welcoming.
Peaceful and beautiful temple. It was warm and quiet, with hardly any tourists around which made the experience even more special. The atmosphere felt so calm and Zen, and the garden was absolutely stunning. A true hidden gem. 🌿
This temple is a large area, with a history in its development. It can be quite the hike going there, but once you get there it's all the more worth it. The Goshuin stamp is 300 yen, and there is an admission to see the entire Shrine grounds. Outside, the gardens and graveyard are well maintained by the groundskeeper. Its clean, and serene atmosphere makes it a peaceful visit on a Sunday day. I recommend visiting Koshi-ji if you're ever in the area.
A beautiful Buddhist temple located up a picturesque hill in the north side of Uji river. It is walking distance from Byodoin temple yet it does not get the maddening crowd. So one can have a pleasurable time enjoying the well tended garden inside. A few couples and ladies in kimono were having their photography shoots when we were there. This temple is still in practice and one has to pay an entry fees to check out the interior sanctuary. We were lucky to witness a family clan having a formal tea ceremony ritual, with the tea service delivered to the patriarch first, the matriarch next, then the rest in 3-4s at a time. Very interesting!
Wow! a temple without thousands of tourists. We were the only ones there. The zen gardens were the most beautiful I have seen so far during my brief trip to Japan. I was able to peacefully meditate on and enjoy the various small and delicate features of the gardens, the stone arrangements, the trees, the flowers, the fish. Come here to relax the mind.
This temple seems really underrated, there haven't been many tourists. It was a nice experience with a lot of things to see. Maybe the missing of too many tourists affected the atmosphere, but I really did enjoy the temple.
Charming small temple complex across the river from Byodoin and up a small hill. Peaceful surroundings and lovely gardens away from the bothersome crowds across the river. Listen to the wind blowing through the trees and the birds singing. It’s calming. We didn’t enter the paid area but I see that some visitors have had a guided tour by a monk or a trainee. Definitely a must-see in Uji. The hill leading up gets beautiful red leaves in Autumn.

Zen Buddhist temple known for its extensive moss garden & requiring an advance reservation to visit.
Slide 1 of 8
This is a temple that moss enthusiasts must visit during the rainy season. The moss here is well-maintained and features a variety of species, unlike other temples that have a more limited selection. The design of the courtyard is also very innovative, with a different scenery at every step, making it suitable to spend several hours exploring at a leisurely pace. The reservation system also helps maintain a relatively quiet atmosphere in the temple. During my visit, I explored the entire courtyard in heavy rain, and I hope to have the opportunity to return here after the rain next time. After all, having wet shoes and socks can affect the overall experience.
A must visit location for a bit of self eflection amd tranquillity amongst a beautifully maintained heritage site. Book online prior to coming, there is no entry otherwise on the day. Prepare to copy a written text prior to visiting the gardens, this was a unique experience using a writing desk in a temple. The sutra is a blessed token you can take woth you to remember your experience by. Of course with all the photos you'll no doubt take.
Cathedral like vibe .. from a western visitors point of view! Having gone to the wrong Saiho-ji temple (there are two in Kyoto) … I was obliged to take a taxi or be very late for my 11.30 time slot.. but yes it was 100% worth the 4000¥ entry fee, pre booked in the U.K. and the 4600¥ taxi fare! This is a unique strolling garden of understated beauty & peacefulness. Not perhaps for those wanting to tick off another site on their “seeing Japan in 10days holiday/vacation!” People were quiet, calm, sitting, taking it in with their eyes & photos. Someone in these reveiws said it wasn’t worth coming to .. and gave it one star, but it’s definitely one that will remain in the mind after.
Such a peaceful and tranquil place that reflects the essence of both Buddhism and Zen. The early fall colors contrast beautifully with the moss colors. The garden designed by Musō Soseki is still the source of inspiration for modern landscape designers.
A truly peaceful and unique experience! The visit began with Sutra copying, which was incredibly calming and brought a deep sense of quiet to my mind. Afterward, I took a serene stroll through the moss garden, which was absolutely beautiful and so tranquil. I highly recommend visiting this special place it's unlike any other. Just be sure to book in advance, as number of visitors per day is limited
Most stunning place I have visited in Japan. Especially beautiful in the autumn. There is a limit to the number of guests able to visit per day, so book ahead as it is reservation only. This is great, because means it is one of the lesser crowded places to visit, and therefore feels authentic and easy to enjoy as it is intended.
Incredible, very quiet and zen, they limit arrival times to keep the crowds smaller. Very good traditional centering activity upon entry of the temple before the gardens. The moss and forest felt otherworldly.
You have to buy/reserve tickets beforehand. I believe we got ours a week before. It keeps the crowds at bay so better photos! Earlier times have less people as with most temples in the area. Absolutely beautiful.
