A lion to commemorate those who fell fighting as such. These men perished fighting against Philip and his son Alexander, the latter later to be known as The Great. This is among the first displays of his military prowess. Leading the heavy cavalry, he guided it into a gap within the enemy line, creating a breach that effectively decided the outcome of the battle. Spectacular as a site in itself, it humbles the visitors who realize that it stands for bravery, duty, pride, and sacrifice. Even if you can see none of these, it's still awesome to look at and will provide some cool photos. Very easy to access and to visit.
Area to park on the road opposite the lion. Lion of Charonea, as other people have described, placed whetr Sacred Band of Thebes soldiers were slain during the battle. It is of huge historical significance to the history of Ancient Greek and the wider ancient world. The lion was reassembled and placed on a new plinth. During excavation, they unearthed around 260 bodies. Next to it, the archaeological Museum has some information covering the battle and the history of the area. For those not history inclined, there is not much to see.
Historical monument of the ancient battle between Philip of Macedonia [ Father of Alexander the Great ] and Theban forces [ Sacred Band of Thebes] along with armed forces from Athens. 338 BC.
The lion is amazing. Don’t expect the modern Greeks to explain the significance. Their homophobia is shameful. The plaque outside the lion is silent on the significance and is almost invisible due to weather damage. Good luck finding anybody in Greece to explain what the Sacred Band was. Pathetic.
Historical spot and monument of the ancient battle between Philip of Macedonia [ Father of Alexander the Great ] and Theban forces [ Sacred Band of Thebes] along with armed forces from Athens. 338 BC.
A monument to Thebian Sacred Band - the militarians, who bitted Sparta, - which falled in the Chearonea battle happenned close to this place - combatting unification of Greece under Macedonian leadership. Thebes were destroyed by Macedonians completely after this battle. United Greece led by Alexandre the Great moved to the East creating Hellenic phase of the Middle East history.
A place with great history, a lion sitting there to remind us the Valor of great ancient Greeks, fighting for their freedom..
It's really massive and very well preserved!
