Beautiful spot for a walk and doing some serious thinking about life!
(Translated by Google) The churchyard was founded in 1909 because of the population growth in Berlin and its neighboring southwestern municipalities. As a result of the National Socialists' "Germania" planning and the resulting necessary reburial of large cemeteries in Berlin, the cemetery grew into the second largest cemetery complex in Germany after Hamburg-Olsdorf and remains one of the 10 largest in the world. In keeping with the spirit of the time, large grave areas are embedded directly in nature and it looks more like a forest with grave markers than a cemetery in the true sense. Large parts of the site also still show the scars of neglect during its location in the border area. However, this also contributes to the unique atmosphere that is worth experiencing. Because of the size of 206 hectares, you only get a small overview when walking along the main circular path. But you will find one or two famous names, such as Werner von Siemens and his family and Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, the director of “Nosferatu”. But Manfred Krug and Rudolf Breitscheid also found their final resting place here. This cemetery is actually suitable as a sole excursion destination and audio guides can also be rented or guided tours are offered. For us, however, the cemetery chapel was the actual destination, as it is the prominently featured church in the town of Winden in the series “Dark”. While I was looking I complained that it could never be a German church, only to be disabused of it when I looked on the internet and of course we wanted to go there too. From 1908-1911 the church was built based on the model of the church in Wang in the Giant Mountains. The traditional Norwegian stick (wooden) church was purchased by the Prussian King Fridrich Wilhelm IV in Norway, shipped from there and reassembled in Wang. The interior of the cemetery chapel is clearly Art Nouveau and very economical, but that is precisely why it is worth seeing. Since we arrived during a funeral service, we first searched the surrounding area and found another shot from the series, where we took a break and took photos. The interior is also as we knew it from the series, which surprised me a little because the interior is actually unusual..."Dark". The main circular route, which you should not leave without a map as you can easily get lost, leads past a British and Italian military cemetery at the western end, which are also owned by these two countries. These are honorary graves for soldiers who fell in World War I and died in German captivity. The architecture of the British part in particular is strongly reminiscent of the Empire period and combines colonial elements with clear European lines.

(Translated by Google) The cemetery is very large, with a lot of nature, old trees, overgrown in places and already "enchanted". An experience, especially in November, because of the photo opportunities that arise almost automatically. A cemetery made for “romantics”. With many, sometimes surprising, fixed points in German and Berlin's economic, cultural and contemporary history. If you're coming there for the first time, it's best to buy a map in the "shop" right at the entrance and write down your goals. The cemetery is really big, but unfortunately only poorly signposted. Also, if you are looking for the graves specifically, take some time. And also use the opportunity to query the internet data about the people. This may sometimes even give you an “aha moment” because there are a lot of names that you may have heard about before.
