Potsdam

Potsdam is a city on the border of Berlin, Germany. Sanssouci Palace was once the summer home of Frederick the Great, former King of Prussia. On the grounds of the complex, the Renaissance Orangery Palace overlooks Italian-style gardens with fountains. Historic Mill offers city views. English gardens surround neoclassical Charlottenhof Palace. The 19th-century Roman Baths were built in several architectural styles.

Sanssouci Palace, a summer residence of the king with 18th-century furnishings and iconic terraced vineyards, embodies the ideas of the Age of Enlightenment. Potsdam, where it is located, was designed to be a picturesque pastoral dream that reflects residents' connection with nature and reason. The city is known for its interconnected lakes and cultural landmarks like Sanssouci Palace, part of Germany's largest World Heritage Site.
Really stunning garden I like the right one which is like a symetrical maze. There they want to plant fruit days like in the creation days. The statues around the central fountain are very impressive for me

The weather was miserable while we were there, but the palace and accompanying grounds are gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!!!!! Had the weather cooperated, we likely would have spent the whole day there! We had bought timed palace tickets ahead of time, which seemed like the correct move. They are serious about entry times! The Picture Gallery was very cool too! The New Palace was closed the day we went, which we knew, and the outside was largely under construction.

One of the prettiest places I have visited so far. Would definitely recommend checking it out. Make sure you take your time, we spent 2 hours here but still didn’t have enough time to see all the palaces. Book your tickets ahead of time if you wanna go inside anywhere!

Visited September 2025. It is a very beautiful place. It took over an hour to get here on the train from Berlin, but the train broke down twice on the way. It is a very beautiful place with a lot of history. You can walk around for hours viewing all the gardens and fountains. It was worth the visit to Potsdam to come here.

Ancient castles located close to each other with historical significance. A vast park perfect for walking or having a picnic. Everything looks stunning in autumn.
Dinh B — Google review
The ticket office is not at the palace but across from the old mill. It's a beautiful mini palace. The tour price is a bit expensive for the length of the tour and size of the palace. But a fun experience and the audio guide gives you a few fun details to look to. It's a beautiful park and after the tour, lots of walking available. Autumn was a great time but in summer there is probably more to do. Highly recommend during your stay in Potsdam!

We took the train from Berlin Hbf, which is an excellent way to visit Potsdam. Nice town to visit, some nice architecture, but the reason for our visit, the Sanssouci palace, was slightly disappointing. Somewhat smaller than expected, and the interior did not quite live up to my expectation of "Germany's Versailles". But certainly not a waste of time though.

The most beautiful place I've been in whole berling during pur trip. Didn't enter the palace. Restroom is 1 euro but there are free wc in the park

Dutch Quarter is located at the eastern end of the Brandenburger Strasse, south of the Bassinplatz. Visitors can explore a vibrant farmers market that takes place every weekday and on Saturday mornings. The market offers a variety of regional and organic produce grown by small farmers, creating a colorful and aromatic experience for all who attend.

Sanssouci Park, located east of the city center in Potsdam, is a renowned attraction known for its formal gardens and historical buildings. Built as a summer palace by Prussian King Frederick the Great, it rivals Versailles with its intimate Rococo style and numerous temples and follies in the surrounding park.
A really good trip out around the local area and then to the palace. Its small but impeccably designed with a lot of fine detail. As this was more of a retreat for the king its less grand in scale than other palaces but I really enjoyed visiting it and learning the history.

I loved everything about this venue it's got something for everyone gardens architecture art galleries. We spent 6 and a half hour there and it didn't feel like it in any way the scenes are on overdrive with so much to take in its something that I could do a few times and still have not seen everything. Spectacular day trip for sure 😃
Steven D — Google review
Beautiful and vast city park with breath taking landscapes and architecture. Great place to spend time with friends or family. It's very huge - it may take hours or days to take every route and explore reach path located in the park. The entrance is free and there's few gates you can get through. Hard to miss if you plan to visit Postdam.
Tomasz X — Google review
A small, cause it was the summer one, but very beautiful palace. With the ticket of 22 euros you get to visit almost all places in Potsdam. Definitely more worth it to visit in the summer time or at least while everything's still green, since the gardens are a big, important part.

Sanssouci Park is absolutely stunning! Walking through the gardens is a true delight, with so many beautiful spots to explore and photograph. The highlight for me was the Orangerieschloss! Definitely a must-see. It’s the most beautiful building in the park, with incredible architecture and charm that you won’t want to miss. Whether you’re a history lover, architecture fan, Sanssouci Park is an unforgettable experience. Truly 5 stars!
Yusuf E — Google review
Highly recommended! If You going there - I would recommend to get electric scooter if You are there for one day trip. It’s best way to see entire park in couple of hours.

This place is truly amazing. The architecture, the gardens, everything is so well kept and maintained. Highly recommend a visit.

A trip to the past, to the era of enlightenment and baroque architecture. Walk the halls Voltaire and Frederick the Great did. The audio tour is very good with lots of details and anecdotes. Take your time to roam the parks and don’t miss the Chinese house.

Sights & Landmarks
The Museum Barberini, located in the heart of Potsdam, is a renowned art museum that houses an exceptional collection of impressionist paintings donated by Hasso Plattner, the founder of SAP. The museum showcases an extensive array of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces from artists like Monet, Renoir, Caillebotte, and Signac. In addition to its permanent collection, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions in collaboration with international partners.
Museum Barberini: A Must-Visit Day Trip from Berlin Barberini never ceases to impress! Just a short and scenic day trip from Berlin, the museum is perfectly situated right across from Potsdam’s main train station—making it incredibly easy to access. The short walk to the museum offers lovely views that set the tone for the experience ahead. The museum itself is impeccable. Every exhibition is thoughtfully curated with both care and expertise, offering a deep yet accessible insight into the art. The audio tour is especially well done—concise, engaging, offering interesting details and relevant context. They also plan talks; conversations and other events. Last but not least the museum has a patio toward the river which only adds to the entire experience. ☞ Pro Tips: Be sure to download the Museum Barberini app before your visit. It gives you access to the audio guide (many languages), curatorial commentary, interviews, and more—all right at your fingertips. 🎫 Buy your Museum tickets in advance (online) 🔑 You will be asked to leave your bags and coats stored: Bring a 1 or 2 Eur coin 📚 Don't forget the gift shop ☕ 🍰Cakes at the coffee shop are TOP! 🚂 If you come from Berlin buy ABC train ticket

Very impressive collection overall, especially if you like impressionism, Monet is everywhere in the museum. Overall there are many 3ayd to get a reduced or even free admission, whether a student or anything else of a number of things. Definitely a great stop!

Amazing collection of impressionist, neo-realist, and fauvist art. Probably the best collection outside of France or maybe Vienna. The special Pisarro exhibition was incredible. The only thing I didn't like was how the security were pushy even about small bags.
Arseni K — Google review
In 31 days, on Sep 28, the Pissarro special exhibition will close up. Catch it while you can. Wonderfully curated, this comprehensive retrospective traces the growth of Camille Pissarro, a man who never stopped experimenting, adapting and refining his visions. ⭐The walls texts balance contextual information with formal analysis. Thoroughly enjoyable. ⭐The audio guide, easily downloadable, is designed so that playing the tracks on built-in loudspeakers is technically impossible. Visitors have to use each headphones or keep the phone to their ears. The viewing and listening experience is, thanks to this design feather, as free from disturbances as possible. ⭐The permanent collection is also top-notch. My personal fav is the room themed “The Colour White”. Various renditions of snow-blanketed landscapes at the end of the Little Ice Age provide a memorable study of how hues and shades other than white give the impression of white. ⭐Logistics: Plenty of locks of all sized. Operated with 1 or 2 Euro coins, which you get back when you vacate the locker. ⭐Phone charging mini cabinets with locks. Appreciated.

If you love Impressionist painters, this will be Heaven for you! Fill 3 floors of Monet, Pissarro ams Renoir! Highly recommended to visit!

Really enjoyed this museum, we arrived on an open day so the entrance was free and they had a Pissarro collection alongside many other Impressionism works. I recommend visiting if in Potsdam, the visit shouldn’t last more than 40-50 minutes in my opinion.

The New Palace, also known as Neue Palace, is an opulent 18th-century palace located in Sanssouci Park. Commissioned by Frederick the Great and completed between 1763 and 1769, it boasts lavish rococo interiors adorned with numerous paintings. Initially intended for state events and official guests after the 7 Years War, it later became the official residence of Kaiser William II.
Worth noting this has been under restoration since the 80s and right now there is scaffolding on a large portion of the exterior. That's unfortunate but it's important to preserve it so it's a worthwhile trade. The 1hr tour of the interior is definitely worth it. They don't offer English tours which is unfortunate, but the guide would answer questions in English. There is an app that has multiple languages but it's nowhere hear as detailed as the tour guide. I used Samsung AI interpreter to listen to what he was saying and while it wasn't perfect I got the general gist enough to ask some questions. He was very knowledgeable. The interior is stunning to match/exceed the exterior. To see it in the prime when operating would have been wild (albeit a bit gross I'm sure). The scaffolding should be off the front in the next few months but the restoration is never done. The university right next to the palace is also incredibly beautiful.

Good to go once to one of the palaces in the park!! If you have seen palaces in India, this will make you feel like a house of a rich person and not like a palace! Is this really a grand palace, may be yes given they had to quickly build this!
Manmohan — Google review
A massive and beautiful palace that's kinda missing some grand garden in front, that would go with it's architecture and style. It's just a long wide dirt roads, neatly trimmed grass and trees in pots. It's a shame, where are some water features, some bushes, flowers etc? It's kinda bleak, especially when you compare it to for example orangerie in the same area.
Maciej P — Google review
After visiting Sanssouci this of course has bigger dimensions but still feels underwhelming somehow. Anyway the rooms are still pretty and it might be worth the entree fee for some people. The staff is very friendly and helpful.

Long nice walk around. Need to buy ticket to enter inside palace. Surroundings gardens are super green, cool and relaxing

Beautiful palace, Lovely staff, had a great time there. There is also a small cafe (with some cakes, wursts, coffee and beer). Highly recommend specially on a sunny day

Absolutely beautiful! We will come back when we have more time. Worth it to do the guided tour!
Maarten H — Google review
We were told that only guided tour visits were allowed and it would take about 45 minutes. There is a new tour in every 20 minutes. Huge and has so many incredibly designed rooms. The room that was decorated with shells all over was my favorite. I visited a few days after Christmas and it was amazing to see they had decorated it for Christmas.

Seafood restaurant
Der Butt is a renowned fish restaurant located in Potsdam, with a rich history dating back to its origins as a tavern in 1842. The name "Der Butt" pays homage to the nickname of Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. This elegant eatery offers an array of delectable dishes featuring locally sourced seafood and freshwater catches, including mussels, lobster, Norwegian salmon, rainbow trout, and Havel eel.
I can't remember having had a better fillet of matie in recent years. I've had several varieties of this tasty fish and they were all buttery and delicious. The host and waitress were incredibly friendly and still had food for us even when the kitchen was closing. Thank you for the great food and service.
Alexander B — Google review
We visited the restaurant today for lunch. It was a hot day. Unfortunately, lobsters were not available. We decided to have Dorade and fresh water fish platter. The dish was well prepared and well served. I wish the fishes had option to be grilled and not fried. Taste is completely different. The fried fish fillets were priced around €27 and Dorade was billed at €25. We had limoncello spritz which was €7.5 per glass. The surprise element of all was still water which was priced at €8. Pretty high especially for a restaurant without AC and when you start sweating within 10min of seating. The hosts were very polite and cordial.

Excellent place for fish dinner. A bit pricey. Does not take credit cards.

Oh… what a nice surprise… extremely good food, excellent service… strongly recommended
Christian L — Google review
We got there at 5pm and politely asked whether there was space for two. We were first kinda rudely told off and only given a table after the waiter and barkeeper had discussed our "case". The place is quite expensive, the shrimp soup with cognac was not enjoyable - too much cognac and too sour - while the grilled fish platter was fine. Also, you cannot pay with credit card, they only accept cash and debit. So overall, not a great experience, we will not come back.
Christian B — Google review
Super friendly staff, delicious food, fast service. It may be a bit pricey but the place ticks all the boxes. As a Mediterranean guy, I would love to see more choices as starters but it is just for the curiosity how variety of tastes this chef can bring on table. This just became one of my favourite places in Potsdam.
Olcayto C — Google review
Very unfriendly, and the food is over-priced for the quality. It's like they are trying to be a "fancy" restaurant. I also had the experience where the server was very rude when I wanted to keep my coat because I was cold. Condescending. Avoid this restaurant. There are many better options just a short walk away.

Italian restaurant
Zanotto Potsdam is a charming Italian restaurant run by Chris Zanotto, a passionate host from the Po Valley. Here, Italian cuisine is elevated to a true art form. The small establishment resembles a theater stage, where fresh ingredients like tomatoes for antipasti are prepared and fruits and vegetables adorn the space – almost as if one were in a lively market in Italy.
The best restaurant in Potsdam. The atmosphere and quality of good were great. The best lasagna I’ve ever eaten. I’m sure I will come again. The restaurant owner is very friendly and passionate about his job. Thank u for everything. 🥂

Zanotto was one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to. Chris, the owner and chef, is warm and welcoming. The restaurant has a cozy, charming atmosphere, with fresh herbs and vegetables incorporated into the decor. Chris makes all the pasta from scratch, and the flavors are light, fresh, and beautifully balanced.
Lisa — Google review
The owner is from Vicenza in northern Italy and he knows a few things about good ingredients and excellent wines. Besides being very friendly, he obviously takes his job very seriously. He has many thoughts about how to combine some very simple dishes adding the details that make them excellent, without trying to be pretentious, in a genuine way. He is true to the tradition, but not without his personal touch. I especially enjoyed the small intimate atmosphere and the cooking done at the table, together with the home made furniture (obtained by recycling wine cases).

Everything that people wrote about this establishment is true. A wonderfull place, amazing fresh pasta, beautiful decoration with dozens of basil plants surrounding you and probably the best desert I have had in my life. Make sure you book in advance, it was.completley full on a sunday night.

Everyone who wants to feel real Italian atmosphere, with the most delicious, special food, and very very delightful and talented owner, who cooks pasta himself in front of you, then you definitely have to visit this extraordinary place! Big big thanks for such an amazing dinner experience, and we will be back!

Amazing restaurant. Truly a fine-dining experience in this beautifully decorated space with great waiters. The food is great, the fish and the meat was quite succulent. The price is quite high, but still justifiable. If you're looking for a high-value place, this is a great option. Do reserve your table in advance, it can get quite full here.

French restaurant
Restaurant
Maison Charlotte is a charming bistro located in the Dutch Quarter, offering delightful French cuisine in a cozy setting. Despite its small size, it boasts an extensive menu featuring classic French dishes like foie gras and creme brulee. The interior exudes a French country house ambiance, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for diners. Guests can enjoy their meals in the intimate front room with bistro tables or admire the pretty street views from large glass windows.
We are in love with this restaurant! Living in Alsace, France, this is the best French restaurant outside France in the lovely quiet Dutch quarter! Better than many in Alsace and Paris! Amazing taste, aesthetic, great choice, wines, too! Great service, attentive, cordial, helpful (with my wheelchair). Don't miss it when you are in Berlin or Potsdam!

Love it here! It's a little slice of France that I plan to enjoy again and again! The wine selection is great, the food natural, authentic and of course delicious. What more could I ask for?!

Sat outside in the amazing winter garden area at the back. Lovely atmosphere and service. They came with an amazing olive tapanade and bread with our aperitifs. First course was the fois gras perfectly prepared.....followed by an amazing steak tartare...maybe the best I have had outside France! A number of set menus to choose from to fit any taste. This place is highly recommended. A bit pricier than others, but for my tastes.....well worth it!

Welcoming staff, especially high-energy waiter and a delightful meal with a nice outdoor seating area.
Gavin D — Google review
Fantastic food in wonderful garden in Potsdam. The soup was extraordinary with a flavourful broth and lots of white fish. Foie Gras was worthy of France. Steak tartar was good. Main course of tagliatelle with mushrooms was perfect too. We chose a well priced Alsace Pinot Blanc and it went beautifully with all the dishes. Nice wine list. Prices were right for the caliber of food and service.
Colleen P — Google review
Very friendly service in a cosy environment. The starters and main courses were very good, the deserts not so much (we didn’t really appreciate the chocolate in them). The prices are indeed pretty steep compared to other restaurants, even though the quality is good. There is a very nice garden in the back and a wintergarden as well attached to it (that’s where we sat), unfortunately when even only one person smokes in the garden (as was the case when we were there) everybody enjoys along :(

Colour (Race) unfriendly! They ruined my night! I am writing this while sitting right in the restaurant. Am standing write at the counter asking the waiter (Sven Richter), if I would get a reservation for one, and the waiter shows me with his head towards unset table ,( the pictures attached )being am a patient person I asked him again, still , he points with his head towards the place he showed me earlier meanwhile a paar (two white ladies) comes with no reservations too and he shows them other direction where other white are sitting! I got no patience called the waitress and asked her why was I given the seat where am the only person of colour, whereas others are put on the other side, moreover I was dining on my own expense! after sitting for a while, the female waitress comes to pick my order I ask her if my table can be sett she goes and brings the serviette and the knife and a🍴 then puts them on the table, while I was still waiting for my order I could see them chit chatting with a glance towards me then laughing! I got furious look at them then the lady stop and moves aside , I even got afraid to eat my food!

Made a reservation for our anniversary dinner while visiting family in Potsdam. Requested outdoor seating. As we walked up we were skeptical of what that would mean. All fears were immediately alleviated as we were shown to the courtyard in the back. Absolutely beautiful. The service was on point and the food was spectacular. Did one of the set menus and couldn’t have been happier. If we ever get a chance to make it back to Potsdam this will definitely be a stop again. Thank you.

German restaurant
Zum Fliegenden Holländer is a traditional brewery tavern located in the iconic red brick building of the thriving Dutch Quarter. The restaurant offers a mix of traditional German food with some Dutch influences, such as roast pork with potato dumplings, paired with an impressive selection of German beers and wine. The rich dark wood interior, crackling fireplace, and cozy atmosphere provide visitors with an authentic Potsdam experience.
We celebrated my birthday lunch and the service was very nice. Our waiter went above and beyond serving wine and also helping my grandma to choose her wine. The food was delicious, lots on the plate and great taste. The menu was offering a wide range of dishes and the wine list was extensive. The decoration inside was very cosy and classy. We will be back. Thanks

We decided to visit this restaurant, without reservation, during our trip to Potsdam cause we had heard many compliments about its local cuisine. Although the restaurant was full, the staff helped us immediately. Everything we ordered was well-cooked and tasteful, more specifically the Wiener Schnitzel was a real surprise. It was probably the best Schnitzel I've ever had!

Our family's first time to dine in Potsdam. And we were lucky to find this resto. Traditional German food. We love the cabbage roll. I had the Icelandic fish fillet. And my kids had other food...all was good! Portions was big but we sure did finish it all. We hope to come back to this place. Server was great too!

It's a fairly romantic place across the street from one of the more secret entrances to the beautiful park Sanssouci. They serve a quite enjoyable rethink of traditional German kitchen. In the evenings it can be crowded, in the day it is quiet and intimate. In summer you can sit outside beside the street (which is quiet and barely has any traffic.)
