I recently visited Daulatabad Fort near Aurangabad, and honestly, it’s one of the most impressive forts I’ve seen. The place is full of history, and the architecture is just mind-blowing. You can literally feel how powerful and strategic it must’ve been back in the day. The fort is built on a hill, so there’s quite a bit of climbing involved – lots of steps – so wear good shoes and carry water. But the view from the top is totally worth it. You get a full 360-degree view of the surrounding area. There are a lot of interesting things inside too, like old cannons, hidden passages, and a deep moat that used to have crocodiles (according to the locals). The design is really smart – it was made to confuse and trap enemies. That’s probably why it was considered nearly impossible to capture. Some parts are a bit ruined and could use better maintenance, but overall it’s still in pretty good shape. The vibe is very raw and authentic – not overly commercialized, which I liked. If you’re into history, photography, or just love exploring old forts, Daulatabad is a must-visit. Just be ready for a bit of a workout!
Daulatabad Fort, originally Devagiri Fort, is a historic fortified citadel located in Daulatabad village near Aurangabad city in Maharashtra state, India. It is a must visit for the people who are interested in history, fort architecture, artillery, art n beautiful panoramic scenes from the top. Its a quite big n vast. Originally built by Yadava King Bhillama V in 12th century to protect the city Devagiri, means 'Hill of the Gods', it passed through the hands of several dynasties and further developed. The fort is so strategically located that every conquerer of it was a proud owner. Sultan Muhammad bin Tughlaq changed the name of it as Daulatabad, means ‘Adobe of Wealth', in 1328 CE when he moved his capital from Delhi to here. This magnificent fort is standing on a top of a 200m high conical hill. It was one of the most powerful forts during the medieval period. The fort was defended by moat (khandak) and glacis (slopes) running around the hill at its foot besides the most complex and intricate defence system. The fortifications comprise of three encircling walls with bastions. Series of trick defence and secret escapes routes are the famous features of this fort. Jama Masjid, Bharatmata Mandir, Chand Minar, Elephant Tank and Chini Mahal (Chinese Palace) are the important monuments inside the fort.

It is a good place if you're into exploring and like a little trekking with your family, friends or even solo. The fort had 2-3 completely dark passages inside, which made it feel more adventurous climbing to the top of the fort. One of the best maintained forts in India and a must visit place once you are in Aurangabad. The fort is kept clean and drinking water and toilets are available inside. Parking is nearby. Walk of appx 1-2 km is involved with steps at many places. There are magnificent views for clicking photos. Piece of history.
Daulatabad Fort, also called Devgiri Fort, is one of Aurangabad’s most fascinating attractions. Known for its reputation as the “unconquered fort,” it holds immense historical importance and continues to play a significant role in archaeological studies. If you enjoy a mix of adventure, exploration, and history, this fort is definitely a must-visit. Although I had heard that the climb involves around 1,100 steps, it genuinely felt like there were far more! The ascent itself is part of the fun, especially for those who love a light trek—whether you're with family, friends, or travelling solo. Along the way, the fort features a few completely dark passages that add to the thrill and make the journey even more exciting. As you climb upward, the views from different points are absolutely breathtaking. An incredible historical visit! Daulatabad Fort stands on a massive hill, showcasing medieval military genius. The sheer rock-cut defenses and the famous, terrifyingly dark Andheri maze are the highlights. While the ascent is tiring, reaching the top provides stunning views and a powerful connection to India's past. Highly recommended for history buffs near Ellora.

Chand Minar, an architectural marvel located within the historical Daulatabad Fort in Maharashtra, stands as a testament to the engineering prowess and aesthetic sensibilities of the medieval period. Built in 1445 by Ala-ud-din Bahmani to commemorate his conquest of the fort, the Chand Minar is one of the most striking features of Daulatabad Fort, drawing visitors from far and wide. The minaret rises to a height of approximately 210 feet and is composed of red sandstone, which gives it a distinctive and majestic appearance. It is divided into four stories, each adorned with intricate carvings and decorative elements that showcase the artistry of the period. The circular design and the tapering structure of the minaret are not only aesthetically pleasing but also a remarkable feat of engineering. One of the most notable aspects of the Chand Minar is its Islamic architectural style, which is evident in the arched niches, geometric patterns, and ornamental motifs. The minaret was originally used as a watchtower and for making public announcements. Its height provided a strategic advantage, allowing a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape and serving as an early warning system against potential invasions. The climb to the top of Chand Minar is not accessible to the public due to safety concerns, but the view from the base itself is awe-inspiring. The minaret’s grandeur and the lush greenery of the surrounding fort premises create a picturesque setting that is perfect for photography and leisurely exploration. The Daulatabad Fort, where Chand Minar is located, is steeped in history and offers a plethora of other attractions, including the formidable fortifications, the grand entrance gates, and the ancient water systems. The fort's strategic location on a hilltop adds to its historical significance, making it a must-visit destination for history buffs and adventure enthusiasts. Visitors should be prepared for a bit of walking and climbing, as the fort complex is extensive and spread out over a large area. Comfortable footwear, water, and sun protection are recommended for a pleasant visit. Guided tours are available and highly recommended to gain deeper insights into the history and significance of the Chand Minar and the fort complex. In conclusion, the Chand Minar at Daulatabad Fort is a captivating historical monument that offers a glimpse into the rich architectural heritage and strategic importance of the medieval period. Its impressive height, intricate design, and historical context make it a standout feature of Daulatabad Fort and a must-see for anyone visiting the region.
Chand Minar: A stunning historical monument in Daulatabad Fort While visiting Daulatabad Fort, one of the important monuments to see is the Chand Minar. This minar is not just a tall tower, but it is a testament to a different historical era and architecture. Architecture and Design: Chand Minar was built in 1445 by the Bahmani ruler Alauddin Bahman Shah. Although this minar was built on the lines of the Qutub Minar of Delhi, it has its own unique identity. This minar, which is about 64 meters high, is four-storeyed and has blue Persian tiles used on it, which further enhances its beauty. Unfortunately, many of these tiles have now been destroyed. Historical Importance: The height and grandeur of this minar symbolizes the victory and power of its builders. There is also a mosque next to the minar, which also gave this place religious importance. This place is very important for history students to understand the art and architectural style of the Bahmani dynasty. My experience: When I went near the Chand Minar, I was very impressed by its grandeur. This minar looks different and attractive compared to the other parts of the fort. It is no longer allowed to go up to the minar, but by seeing its shape and structure from below, you can guess how advanced the architecture of that time was. After the difficult climb of the fort, seeing this minar gives a different energy. Finally, If you are visiting Daulatabad Fort, then definitely see the Chand Minar. This minar is not just a tall pillar, but it is a living testament to the glorious history and amazing architecture of the Bahmani dynasty.
A minaret later added to the magnificent Deogiri Daulatabad Fort. This happens to be the tallest minaret in Peninsular India, erected in 1445 C.E by the Bahamani dynasty, which once had the fort under their rule. This was by Aladdin Bahamani . The Chand Minar rises 63 metres above the ground, has 4 storeys and 24 chambers. The monument is at the foothills of Deogiri Daulatabad and can be seen from around most places in the fort. Once adorned with Blue Persian tiles the same as the ones in Samarkand, a few of them still remain. Once the entry to the top most storeys of Charminar minaret was open , I had the privilege of climbing its stairs in the late 80s as a child. Today Tourists can only visit the base. One can keep looking at the minaret for long with the clear blue skies or the passing clouds. The Jharokas (Balconies) at the foundation remind us of the Indian Architecture along with the Islamic.
An historic medieval minaret located inside the Daulatabad fort complex in Daulatabad. It is a popular tourist attraction and is visited by tourists. This minaret is the second largest minaret in India. It was built by Alaudin Bahmani in 1445 to commemorate his victory over the fort. It's architectural style is Indo-Islamic. This minaret resembles the Qutub Minar of Delhi and was inspired from it. It is 63 metre high with 4 storeys and has 24 chambers. This minaret was used as a watchtower and to make announcements related to the fort. There is a small mosque at its base. It is closed to the public due to a suicide case. It is also seen from outside the fort. This minaret is an ideal place for tourists, history lovers and architecture buffs as well. It is a must visit and should not be missed.
The important event in the Daulatabad fort time-line was the construction of the Chand Minar by the Bahmani Sultan Hasan Gangu Bahmani, also known as Ala-ud-Din Bahman Shah (r. 3 August 1347 – 11 February 1358). Hasan Gangu built the Chand Minar as a replica of the Qutb Minar of Delhi, of which he was a great fan. He employed Iranian architects to build the Minar, who used lapis lazuli and red ocher for coloring. Currently, the Minar is out of bounds for tourists, because of a suicide case. The Chini Mahal, located further inside the fort, is believed to date back to the Nizam Shahi dynasty. Later, it was repurposed as a prison by the Mughals, reputedly holding Abul Hasan Qutb Shah of the Golconda Sultanate of Hyderabad.
Chand minar is situated inside the campus of daultabad fort...You don't need to go there separately, when you go to Daulatabad Fort you will see this tower yourself
The placement of chand minar inside a fort is very well. It gives symbolization from history. We cannot go inside or above the tower. But it feels nice to be here.
Chand Minar was built as a triumphal sign after Ala-ud-din Bahmani captured the Deogiri fort. The minaret was used by the Marathas under their rule in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was also used by the British during their rule in the 19th century. It is a testament to the skill of the then-Indian architects who built it.
