Whitewater Falls

Scenic spot
Nature & Parks
Highest waterfall east of the Rockies, offering 2 overlooks & steep, rugged forest hiking trails.
Slide 1 of 8
Breathtaking views and a peaceful hike! Whitewater Falls is absolutely stunning — the waterfall is massive and powerful, and the views from the overlook are just beautiful. The trail to the main viewing platform is short, easy, and well-maintained, making it great for all ages. There are also a few stairs if you want to get a closer look from the lower platform. The area is clean, peaceful, and surrounded by gorgeous forest. It’s a perfect spot for photos, a quiet walk, or just soaking in nature. Highly recommend making the stop if you’re in the area — it’s one of the most beautiful waterfalls I’ve seen in the Southeast!
Quick and easy hike on a paved road. About .5 miles. Stairs down and up are optional to get closer to Whitewater falls. The sound and the views are remarkable. You’ll need to pay $3.00 (they accept cashless / Apple Pay) to park. Dog, stroller, kid and wheelchair friendly.
Probably the best waterfall to visit in North Carolina. The is a slight uphill walk from your car for about a 1/10 of a mile to see the falls. If you want a better view from the platform, you’ll have to climb down the stairs, which makes it a moderate hike. This day we went to the base which I highly recommend not doing unless you have done a lot of off trail hiking before. You have to climb over huge boulders and the rocks are very very slippery!!! $3 parking fee
Amazing waterfall! Just a heads-up—there are a ton of stairs and the path down is pretty steep, so be prepared for a bit of a workout. We got caught in the rain while we were there, so unfortunately we didn’t make it all the way down to see the best part. Still, it’s a beautiful spot and totally worth the visit!
Short walk on a paved path to a staircase leading to a viewing platform. You can still see the falls from the end of the paved path, so if you can’t (or would rather not) take the stairs, you can still get a nice view. There is a $3.00 per car entrance fee, collected by kiosk or iron ranger.
Absolutely gorgeous waterfall!! Tallest east of the Mississippi River, shared by both North Carolina and South Carolina. It's 1/2 a mile walk to see it. There are 151 steps down to a platform to see the waterfall more centered and absolutely recommend going down the 151 steps but overall is 302 by coming back up. I felt a stadium affect at the bottom of the overlook. I went during the fall peak colors of the trees and it was an experience I will never forget! You don't have to go down the steps to capture the beauty of this waterfall. It's a fairly easy 1/2 a mile walk with a slight incline.
We took my foster pup hiking for the day. Great space for enrichment and training. Great pictures. Too many people to get a good picture of the falls and no good access to explore. Definitely had a great time.
Whitewater Falls is one of those places that makes the drive worth it before you even step out of the car. Tucked near the point where North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia meet, it’s an easy three-hour trip from Atlanta that takes you through three states and lands you somewhere that feels a world away. The falls themselves? Majestic doesn’t even cut it. You can’t get right up to them. There are no trails down to the base. However, the overlook gives you a sweeping, unobstructed view that’s honestly stunning. It’s the kind of place that quiets you without asking. Just trees, rock, water, and air. The park is clean and well cared for. Three bucks per car (cash or card) and you’re in. There’s a calm here that’s hard to describe. No crowds. No noise. Just the sound of the falls in the distance and the rustle of the wind through the trees. For the more adventurous, there are hiking trails that snake off into the hills. For everyone else, the main viewing area is an easy walk and still offers plenty of payoff. This place doesn’t need much selling. It’s just beautiful, plain and simple. Peaceful, powerful, and easy to reach, exactly the kind of spot you wish you’d found sooner.

What a great park full of adventure! There were plenty of trails that were pretty well maintained. The difficulty scale was also pretty accurate which I definitely find helpful. We took out two dogs and had no issues . I really enjoyed how dog friendly everyone was that we came across.
This state park is a must try! Location is close to Cashiers so you can head over there in a 20 minute drive. Cabin can sleep up to 6 with 4 bunk beds. Heat works great! Cabins 1-5 are directly across from bathrooms and shower. Rainbow Falls Trail is inside of the park and it’s worth every step. The camp host and her husband were helpful! So friendly! I highly recommend!
Awesome park to visit and camp! There was a moderate hike out to rainbow and turtle back falls, but they are totally worth it. Showers were very clean, and campsites were tidy when we arrived. I will definitely be coming back here in the future!
The hike to Rainbow Falls at Gorges State Park was clearly labeled strenuous but worth the amazing views. However, there are some places along the hike where I would suggest watching your step as there are no ropes or anything to hold onto. Overall the trails were prestine and the campgrounds were very well maintained. I would highly recommend!
I stayed at the campground and it was really nice. The campsites were close but somewhat secluded. It was nicely spread out with the where the cabins were in one area, tents another, and RVs in their area. The bathrooms were clean and they had showers. They had potable water spigots throughout the campgrounds. It was cool watching the bats fly are nightly and hearing the whip-or-wills calling. The campground host Connie and her dog were super helpful and engaging. She was the best campground host I’ve ever encountered. She made rounds checking on you, called you by name, and asked about your day. She definitely went above and beyond and is an asset to the park staff. The park was beautiful and well maintained. Nice trails and beautiful waterfalls. You can see some wildlife. Raymond Fisher pond is nice and peaceful, a great place to sit and meditate. I was lucky enough to see an elusive white squirrel in the park but missed a photo opportunity. The visit center and gift shop nice. Definitely worth a visit. Nice informative movie on the gorge and ecology. They also had picnic tables around the building and rocking chairs facing the mountains in the distance.
We did the hike to Rainbow Falls. Beautiful hike , in any season, to a very large waterfall that always has a good water flow, even when the water levels are lower. There are places to step out on the rocks and view the river and little falls.
5/2025 Great place to go camping. Fills up on week-ends. Rainbow Falls and Upper Bearwallow Falls access from the park. Bathrooms and showers are cleaned daily. Rangers are very helpful in answering any questions you may have about the area.
Gorges is Gorgeous! Wonderful campground with full hookups, and amazing visitor center. There are lots of hiking trails including access to the Foothills Trail. We hiked to Rainbow Falls which is about 3 miles round trip. It was worth the hike!

What a beautiful place! I've been playing here for a couple of years. This year, the course maintenance improved greatly. They still struggle keeping the bunkers in good shape, but the fairways and greens are in good shape. The super likes to place some weird pins, but so is golf! The views and wildlife are beautiful and abundant. It's one of my favorite mountain courses! The course can have some really wet spots when it rains. But again, that's golf. Nick, the car attendant, proshop guy, and basically everything else, is super friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, the restaurant is closed due to under staffing. A must play when in the area!
I want to be upfront—course conditions at Sapphire National Golf Club this past weekend weren’t ideal. That said, everything else about the experience was top-notch. I was there with a group of guys for a friend’s wedding, and we honestly couldn’t have asked for a better time. The layout of the course is extremely challenging—it rewards smart, strategic play over simply hitting it long, which made for a fun and engaging round. Nick, who took great care of us, was outstanding. We were fortunate to have much of the course to ourselves, and he was incredibly attentive to anything we needed throughout the day. While I might not return solely for the course conditions, I’ll absolutely be back for the overall experience—and that’s thanks to Nick. Much appreciated!
Beautiful scenery, awesome location, this course has the potential to be a destination course for public use, however…. the greens were horrendous and only the front 9 was open, in addition to holes 10 and 18 on back nine; which apparently we could’ve played but nobody told us about it until after we finished and inquired since we saw people playing on #18. I really hope someone invests in this course because it could be such a great asset for vacationers who aren’t part of a country club up here! Especially if the brewery they market actually was open and had live music or other reasons to visit and stay post golf.
Worst course ever. We used to play here a while back and it was much better. They also had a great restaurant that was ideal to grab a bite after a game. That is now closed and im being told the owners will not bring it back. I think i speak for everyone on the mountain when i say "bring the restaurant back!"
Work in progress, challenging recovery from hurricane Helene. Only 10 holes are open due to reconstruction, focus obviously on reopening the back nine and the entrance (now a major, difficult detour). Tee boxes and greens will require major re-seeding and sod. The restaurant (a major draw with live music in the past, now only serves snacks/hot dogs). Positives are that its the only remaining public access golf course in the area, price is reasonable, it's not busy, the setting is beautiful and the people in the pro shop are very engaging and transparent. Alternatives are all 40-50 minutes away at Lake Keowee, Brevard and (my favorite) Sky Valley, GA.
I have visited for years. I miss tours but great way to hike, experience a rain forest and enjoy fall foliage
I love this course because it's on some beautiful land with some amazing views. It is extremely challenging for a double-bogey golfer like myself (aren't they all!). A thick line of trees lines almost every hole. Missing a fairway often means losing a ball. The greens were in great shape and very fast, but the course could be maintained better overall. The bunkers are an unplayable disaster, and I wish they would take measures to prevent mountains of goose pooh from piling on some of the greens. They're definitely overcharging for the level of maintenance ($90!?). If I hadn't gotten some very reduced prices, I would have been seriously annoyed.
Great setting for a course. Nice elevation and design. That’s the good. The bunkers have not been taken care in a long long time. Too bad, the bunkers are unplayable . And before noon it’s cart path only. Not what is expected. Greens are slow, maybe rolling around a 7.

Family-oriented attraction with skiing, boarding & tubing on hills for all skill levels.

The resort offers ski experience and lessons for beginners as well as more advanced skiers. It's not a big slope, but it's a nice run. Tubbing was kids friendly. It had four lanes and a moving sidewalk. Loads of fun!
We’ve been coming to Sapphire for several years & today’s experience was the best so far! Our family got there early to reserve ski tickets & they were on the slopes quickly! This is a great place for beginners to learn to ski! They also have snow tubing that is fun for the whole family. The staff was very helpful & efficient! The ski patrol does a great job of watching the slopes & helping when they’re needed. Ski Patrol named Elizabeth is very kind & helpful. She does a great job! Our family had a great time at Ski Sapphire Valley today!
We took our 3yr old Tubing, it was excellent!! The skiing was a bit shallow, due to lack of true snow so far this season. But there was enough for her to gear up, and actually learn the basics. Great atmosphere.
Great location. Quiet. Peaceful. Clean. Well managed. Can't comment on the skiing. After all, it is early May, but the area more than makes up for it. And I would be happy just with the fireplace in the units. If you are off ski season, there is an executive Par 3 golf course, hiking trails, waterfalls and scenic drives all around you. You can't lose
Really good place to go with family. Perfect for beginners as we were. The staff is very professional and make sure you have a good time at their facilities. We loved skiing and tubbing. Definitely a place I would recommend.
Great Two run ski resort for families to learn To ski at. Family of 5 with lift tickets & rentals was ~$480. Get there early as the ski shop & paying for it takes some time.
Roomy and clean. I didn't want to leave the bed, it was so comfy! Would definitely go back. Would have gave it five stars but the rooms are dated (1980's style).
We probably picked the worst time possible to try this place. - The MLK holiday weekend, in the middle of the global pandemic where outdoor sports are already in high demand. The place was absolutely PACKED!!! - But if you read below, you’ll see how the team at Sapphire Valley still deserve all 5 stars. My daughter and I drove up from Atlanta (3 hours each way) and arrived at opening time to find there were already lines for lift tickets and rental equipment. By 10am renters were already being turned away because they had run out of most equipment. Then I met Gary... Gary was working the lines and speaking to everyone individually, listening to them and gently explaing the situation. We pitched that had driven up for the day specifically for my daughter to learn to snowboard and it would all be in vain. Fortunately he had an idea. Daughter is pretty small and light so they had some kids boards leftover but nothing for me, except perhaps a short pair of ski’s and the promise of a board later in the day. “Brilliant - I’ll take it!” - After about an hour we were suited and booted! Theres a gentle bunny slope with a Magic Carpet and a longer run with a couple of rails for experts to slam, fed by a 4 seat Chairlift. Despite the initial crowds, the slopes never felt crowded and we had plenty of space to learn. Also if you look at the ski cam on their website it looks like the lines to go uphill are long but they move fairly quickly. Then I met Amanda... Amanda had noted that I wasnt in the equipment I wanted and took the time to follow up with a phone call as soon as a board my size became available. A quick return of my skis and boots and I’m back into ‘Shawn-White-Mode’! What looked like a total bust for the day, had now turned into probably one of the more memorable days in my daughters life. - Primarily down to the team at Sapphire Valley. Even all the guys who spent the day freezing while working the lifts had some chat and a smile for us all. This place could rival Chik-Fil-A for top level service! I would also recommend it for a fun day out for the family and a perfect place for the youngsters to learn before heading to more expensive resorts.

The horses are beautiful, and Mr. Hinkle is a great host. His stories of the land and its native people's are legendary. The guides are very knowledgeable, and the trails through the forest are gorgeous! Highly recommend for all ages.
Loved my recent ride there! Mr Kayren was a great trail host for me and my friend. Loved my first mule ride in the beautiful mountains of Sapphire! Will definitely be back!!!!!!
Perfectly invigorating and relaxing experience. Horses are so beautiful and their guides love them on a personal level and it shows. You get a full description of each horse when choosing who you will ride. Kiwi was the best and I didn’t have to direct him at all I claimed Mr Finkle as my mountain grandpa
Owner is full of historical info & stories about the area. Manager is sweet as can be, professional, kind & knowledgeable. The trail is amazing & the staff is so attentive. We were novices so they made sure we were comfortable with the horses & even walked along the entire trail with me as I had just had a chemo treatment. Carly was so in tune with the horses. Our leader was full of info along the trail. And the horses! They’re magnificent!
The horses had good personalities. I rode Ryan and my partner rode Kaycee. We had a ton of fun! On the other hand, and why I am leaving a poor review, I was heartbroken by the condition of the horses. They were extremely thin and Ryan smelled like rotting flesh. I understand how easily a horse can drop weight but they had no hay or water and were standing on concrete. I was also given the excuse of the horses being rescues. If a horse was a rescue I wouldn’t think they would use it to ride until it was healthy and sound. Their stalls all had multiple piles of poop as well. Our guide was kind and knowledgeable about the plants but I have a bad feeling that she was under the influence. The other girls seemed nice and respectful, however. I was deeply disappointed in these things for the price we paid for a ride.
i went horseback riding for the first time since age 10! Had Kayla as my guide and she was wonderful. She took plenty of time to explain things and make sure I was safe. She told the history of the farm and about all the plants we saw along the way. The owner is a wealth of information about the history of the area and especially the Native Americans. Would HIGHLY recommend for family fun or as a getaway for a solo as my family couldn't be there. My horse was so gentle and responsive. Will do again. Go do it!
Never go here! They are flaky, unorganized, and a terribly run business. My fiance had a ride scheduled for 2 groups, 3 months in advance of her bachelorette party. She confirmed her group size and ride date the week of the party again. Whitewater Equestrian responded saying that they were excited to see them on Saturday. My fiance and her group show up at the scheduled time and scheduled day, yet no one was there. My fiance calls the number multiple times and does not get an answer. So finally, after waiting for an hour, their group decided to leave. There was also no radio available to reach anyone from the business as it says on other reviews. My fiance then received a call another hour later saying that Whitewater had them scheduled for the following day. This was never the agreed day and the date had been confirmed multiple times. To make matters worse, there was no apology from the employee on this call. Just stated that they had it written down for the next day. Never in a million years should someone support this awful business. With organization and customer service like this, I am surprised they are still operational. Ruined what was supposed to be a great day.
Kayla, our guide, was knowledgeable, friendly, kind, & very accommodating! The mountain trails are serene & stunning. We loved our gorgeous, gentle rides. Kayla’s a living encyclopedia of local plants & their traditional uses. This place is a gem!

Came here last year when nothing else was open (they're open until midnight) and had surprisingly good food. This year we decided to make a stop here again for some drinks and late night appetizers. Really enjoy the food, and drinks here. Prices are reasonable. Nice little quiet place to go late night for drinks and tapas. You can sit at the bar, a table, a couch area, or even out on the front porch. Staff was accommodating and knowledgeable. Look forward to future visits.
This is, without a doubt, the best gourmet bar food in the entire country. The staff is friendly and fast and the food is amazing. Try the smoked Gouda blue cheese dip that comes with the delicious chicken wings or the perfectly prepared lamb chops. They are open late, too, so no need to worry about where to eat late after a long day of work or play.
Busy night on Monday as there isn't much else open. We had a cheese and fruit plate and a flat bread pizza. Both were good and the wine was great. Our server when we first got there was great she was handling a whole croewd of people and doing a great job with it. We planned on staying a while but my husband started talking to a guy a few seats down the bar and was asked to not be so loud. I thought the bartender was quite rude about it and I chose to leave. It was disappointing because there was a table in there that was way louder than his single self. We couldn't hear each other talk when we first got there. Sadly we won't be back and we had planned on being there every night of our trip. We thought it would be a great place to stop before dinner...and even after. Go, enjoy, but be quiet.
Great food, wine, and service. The Mexican street corn was amazing! Nice atmosphere and a pleasant ambiance. A great place to unwind and enjoy some awesome tapas style goodies.
The food was great, the waitress was friendly. Went in on a Saturday night for dinner. Ordered an appetizer and it took quite a long time to arrive. My fiancée and I both ordered sliders and French fries, probably the easiest thing on the menu, but my plate arrived at least 10 minutes before hers. Again the food was great, but how can you not get 2 basic entrees to a table within a few minutes of each other? Other reviews seem to be positive so maybe we caught them on an off night or with someone new in the kitchen
Such a wonderful place where you can feel comfortable and relax while enjoying some great appetizers. We started with the meat & cheese board which was tasty and a nice selection of 3 meats and 3 cheeses with crackers, pickles and spicy mustard. Then we had the fried green tomatoes which are my absolute favorite with the pimento cheese and bacon onion jam on top; delicious! Then we tried the bacon wrapped scallops which were crispy and cooked to perfection. Lastly we tried the Philadelphia Egg Rolls and those were okay, not my favorite but overall the food was excellent. The service was good and the atmosphere is casual.
Great service and very good food. Don't be fooled by food being described as tapas and small plates. Each dish was plenty for a meal or to share. We had 5 folks in our party and we couldn't finish. Great flat breads, caesar salad, dip a and more. Good selection of wines and many were only $6 glass which is really great these days.
Fantastic little place. Tapas were excellent. Everyone was friendly. Sapphire seemed to be nothing but a tourist town (mainly for golfers), but this place was filled with locals, which we loved. Very down to earth. Our bartender was always smiling and our glasses were never empty. Perfect service!

This is a must while in Cashiers or Sapphire. I wasn’t sure what to expect so I started with the 60-minute massage but go for the 90! You can go with a friend and enjoy the covered patio and refreshments. It’s a cozy and comfortable environment. I would book a later afternoon appointment so you can walk over to the Canyon Kitchen for drinks with your spouse or friends. The views are amazing!
We've been coming to Canyon Spa on and off for years and it never disappoints! It’s quiet, cozy, and quaint yet still so luxurious. The check-in process is simple, the washroom with a huge shower and nice products to freshen up before and after is so nice and the rooms where you get your service are so relaxing. My husband and I both had massages with Camille and she was amazing! The pressure was perfect, she was professional but warm, and my husband (who had a 90-minute massage) noted how strong she is which exactly what he needed for tight muscles. We’ll definitely request Camille next time we’re in town. Canyon Spa continues to be one of our favorite places to relax! 10/10
Had a great day at this spa. It is small with a lot of attention to detail and their customer. The scenery is beautiful. My massage therapist was Chad and he was fantastic. I was on a girl's trip and we chose to get the charcuterie tray and champagne. Delicious! They also provided hot tea, water, and snacks for free. The service was excellent. I would definitely go back and highly recommend.
The services from Sara, the aesthetician, are amazing! Every facial I have received has been perfect! She makes the best recommendations for which treatment, to which products to use on my skin. I always leave glowing! The spa is wonderful, happy, and professional. I am grateful to have the Spa so close to my home.
Loved Jessica. ❤️ She customized my massage to target trouble areas of which I had many. She helped me understand where the pain was coming from. Jessica is a good listener and problem solver; a true healer. I will ask for her again.
Outstanding location, excellent spa services, rather small but cozy and great therapists. Worth the drive from Highlands, a truly beautiful tranquil spot perfect for a relaxing massage.
Wonderful experience! Everyone was so accommodating and helpful during our time there. The facility was absolutely beautiful and the experience was the most relaxing! Will definitely be back!
Such a nice place. Had a 60 stone massage. Best thing ever. Definitely will be back.
