Still operative 1791 lighthouse & navigation museum on rocky, scenic coastline in Ft. Williams Park.

We really enjoyed visiting Portland Head Light, even though it was quite busy when we went. The lighthouse is absolutely stunning — one of the most photographed in the U.S. — and it’s easy to see why. The view over the rocky coastline is just breathtaking. The walking paths around Fort Williams Park are great for exploring and give you plenty of chances to enjoy the landscape and ocean views. There are picnic areas, a small museum in the keeper’s house, and even a couple of food trucks nearby for a quick bite. It’s a place you can easily spend a few hours just walking, taking photos, and soaking in the scenery. Definitely worth the visit if you’re in the Portland area!
The view is just breathtaking. Such a picture perfect place. We got some amazing pictures. Lots of place around for the kids to play. Paid parking We visited first week of October. Make sure to go around sunset and you get amazing photos when the light hits the water.
I visited the Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth on a beautiful Friday evening, and it truly lived up to its reputation as one of Maine’s most breathtaking landmarks. The panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean with waves crashing against the rugged cliffs was absolutely stunning, a perfect spot for photos, quiet reflection, or simply taking in the coastal beauty. Parking was very reasonable at $6 for 2 hours, and there was plenty of space when I arrived. The park closes sharply at 5 PM, so it’s best to plan your visit earlier in the afternoon if you want enough time to explore and enjoy the scenery. Despite being a popular attraction, it wasn’t crowded during my visit, which made it even more peaceful. The historical significance of this lighthouse adds so much character. Built in 1791, it’s the oldest lighthouse in Maine, and you can feel that sense of heritage as you walk around the surrounding Fort Williams Park. The nearby museum gives a quick but insightful peek into its past, from guiding early ships to serving as a symbol of maritime resilience. Overall, Portland Head Light is a must-visit serene, scenic, and rich with history. I walked away feeling both relaxed and inspired, watching the sunset cast a golden glow across the lighthouse and the sea.
Such a wonderful lighthouse with BEAUTIFUL views. There is a small museum with admission only being a couple dollars per person and it is very worth it. So much history there, it’s fascinating. The trails were maintained and plenty of parking. Several food and coffee trucks scattered throughout the grounds as well.
Beautiful views! Parking is plenty, but the light house area is quite a walk from parking - BUT this little spot in the world is so beautiful!! There are food trucks in several areas in this park - we tried the blueberry pie ice cream and the black raspberry ice cream truck near the light house and it was AMAZING! There is a small fee for parking, but the parking meters are easily accessible. There are porta-potties near the parking area.
I don’t even know where to start — Portland Head Light did not disappoint! The scenery was absolutely amazing. My husband, our toddler, and I wandered around for a few hours just taking in the views and snapping tons of photos. Our little one was thrilled watching all the boats out in the bay. It was so fun to see everyone enjoying the beauty of this place. If you’re in the area, take the time to go check it out, it’s 100% worth it!
This is a lovely light House outside of Portland in Cape Elizabeth. If you have a car you can drive there and pay for parking. There is a public bus that will take you half way but you will have to walk 45 minutes the rest of the way. Your best bet would be Uber or Lyft. Its not much going ($15) but double the price ($41) returning. It takes about 15 minutes. Reception is very bad there also so it'll take a while for a signal. You may want to reserve an Uber back. It's worth it for the views. There is also a cliff walk and Fort Williams. The Lighthouse museum is $2 located in the Lighthouse keeper's house. They also have a short tour conducted by a park ranger at 11:00am. They have three food trucks located in the park. It should take about 4-5 hours.
Beautiful lighthouse! The wind was really strong and chilly here even on a sunny day in the second week of October. You can walk along the coastal trail to see various views of the lighthouse.

This was my first time visiting this park and Portland Head Light! Had a great time walking around and photographing the lighthouse through the smoke and fog on a beautiful 80° morning. Also enjoyed a great Caprese Sandwich and a Maine Blueberry Soda from the Bite Into Maine Food Cart! I was very okay with the $6 parking fee for the minimum 2 hours. Downtown parking was $20 more for the same two hours or $25 for all day parking where available.
Wonderful spot to spend some time, go for a walk, admire the ocean views, and of course visit Portland Head Light. The park is pretty big and I wish we had time to explore more of it, especially the coastal cliff walk and the fort itself. Portland Head Light is a must-see though. Minus one star for forcing everyone out of the park before sunset was over, it was literally one of the most incredible sunsets we've seen and the ranger kicked everyone out before we could really enjoy it and see how the light was hitting the lighthouse. Be careful because the ranger let people linger a little bit but then he really started confronting people.
We came to this park specifically to see the lighthouse, but we parked in a lot near an old mansion and Fort, and walked around. The views were beautiful and it was a nice walk. We then drove up to the parking lot, close to the lighthouse and enjoyed walking around and getting as many different angles of pictures as we could. You do have to pay for parking, but it is not pricey. This is definitely a must visit if you are in the Portland area.
Fun place to spend a couple hours. Includes a lot of interesting sites to see and plaques and pictures to know what you’re looking at. The cliff walk had some great views of the rocky shore. The lighthouse and mansion were my favorite parts of the visit. In the summer it would be a great place for a picnic. Very family friendly.
Very well maintained park in Cape Elizabeth, ME with a beautiful rocky coastline and an iconic Maine lighthouse. The views are outstanding. The city park is fairly large, beautifully landscaped and maintained by the town of Cape Elizabeth. Be prepared to walk up and down hills (wear good walking shoes). The park gets very crowded on weekends and parking can be hard to find. There is a fee for parking that you need to pay at a kiosk. The park is dog friendly so bring fido! Be sure to bring water for your pup in the hot weather, and for yourself. Toilets consist of porta potties (ick) but at least they are there!
Gorgeous, breathtaking, stunning, amazing…..no word in the English language can describe the views! Very dog friendly as well. We went off season but even for our reactive dog, there was plenty of space to pull off and keep everyone safe.
We visited on a Saturday afternoon in mid-June 2025. Finding parking was a little rough. There were a number of extra spots on grass and in the Fort William Parade Grounds field with sun and no shade. But if you wanted a decent spot closer to water or on more compact surface it was difficult to find. We did find a great spot up on hill by the public bathroom (porta johns). It was a great spot because there is a pavilion right up top that's great for picnicking. We started by visiting the Portland Head Light. We just walked down straight across the field. There is actually a great photo spot right before the steps as you walk down. We noticed a number of people stopped here to take a photo. Because you're so high up, there are no other people in your shot. The actual light house was nice. There is a small museum underneath it but there was a cost to go in. $2/ adult and $1/child. The sign specifically says NO TOWER TOURS, NO FOOD OR DRINK, NO RESTROOMS. We decided on the time that we had here that it wasn't worth it to pay to go in. There is also a small giftshop in an adjacent building. It was about the size of a large shed or small garage. It was also very crowded in and outside of there near the light house. As you walk further away there is less and less people which was nice. We decided to do the Cliff Walk towards the North Viewpoint because we wanted to also explore the abandoned bunker and Goddard Mansion. There are multiple stops heading north on the cliff walk that you can turn around and get a great photo of the headlight. Only issue we had was that it was mid-day and the sun lighting was harsh on the photos. Best to come earlier in the morning and later in the afternoon/evening. We hoped to also explore the Fort Williams Mine Casement but from up above trying to hike down, there was a ton of erosion and we were not sure if we went down, we could get back up. We knew there was possibly another entrance below but to get there from the rocks would've taken a significant portion of our limited time at the park. So we went as far as we could safely and decided to turn around. There were a couple of small signs that pointed out the structure. If you weren't specifically looking for it, you'd easily miss it. We arrived at the Abandoned Fort William Bunker with maybe 2 other groups there. We did climb up on the right side and explored all the way around. The kids really enjoyed it and you can get some cool pictures on top of the bunker. The kids also did the dark tunnel underneath. They said it was very dark and mostly trash and some graffiti in there. We explored here for maybe 20 mins. Lastly we hiked to the Goddard Mansion. The lighting was perfect through the trees. We entered from the back side coming from the Abandoned Fort Williams Bunker. There are trails back here and it looked so cool with the light. We took a number of photos and most people didn't really care it looked like and hiked on the paved asphalt trail to the other side. The mansion interior is fenced off but it was still really cool. I think we timed it just right for photos here. Also there weren't very many people interested in it. Looks like most wanted to see the bunker and then headed back. Overall this was a great afternoon we spent at Fort Williams Park. There were many other things here that we wanted to explore and hike but we only had about 2 hrs. If we were in Portland again we would totally put this on the top of our list to return. However we came in mid-June. I would be a little scared of the crowds later in the summer like July.
An iconic Maine site and a must see when passing through Portland, ME. Portland Head light situated on the rocky Maine coast is stunning. Additionally, the park features open space, picnic areas and walking trails along the coast. The one downside of the visit was the large crowd and significant traffic. We went on a beautiful Saturday in October and so did many others. We had to slowly cruise the parking lots for 20 minutes before a parking spot opened up. The visit was worth this minor inconvenience, but if possible you should try to visit during less crowded times.

Beautiful spot with a park and stunning ocean views. The rocky shoreline at the intersection adds a unique charm, and you’ll often see people taking a dip. It’s a perfect place to relax — whether you’re up for a picnic, a swim, or just a peaceful walk by the water. Highly recommend for a laid-back day out.
We had our annual State of Maine Staff Day here. The parking lot is a decent size, they have bathrooms right next to it and a nice size playground as well. We walked up a little incline to a shelter with a fairly large grassy area. It was really nice and completely surrounded by trees so other people coming in couldn’t really see us. It helped that the day was beautiful and we had clear skies with a strong breeze. The shelter had plenty of outlets and lighting. The grassy area was relaxing to sit out on. They have a bunch of picnic areas out asking the ocean. There’s no beach here with water access which is kind of a bummer as we love to get in after our activities, but the views were breathtaking. We climbed the little hill by the parking lot and you can see forever. This was a really nice place overall and we may be coming back at some point.
This state park was a once in a lifetime experience for our family while on vacation from VA! My three boys were in heaven climbing the rocks, exploring tidal pools, and even catching a glimpse of a seal in the water! It was so peaceful and beautiful. Even on an overcast day with some fog, it was spectacular. There are several picnic tables and sitting areas to just enjoy the view. There is a playground and bathroom facilities. If you are looking for an amazing Maine coastline location for an engagement event or family photos (or even senior photos), this is it! Cost for non-Maine residents was $7 per person. Less for Maine residents. (***This is NOT the location to see the two lighthouses that Two-Lights road leads to. For that, continue to the left on the road instead of entering the park and visit the Lobster Shack down the road.)
Free, but limited parking. Cool plants and rocks. People were collecting seashells on the sandy beach. View of 2 nearby lighthouses. Well rated seafood restaurant with great view.
A beautiful little park on the Maine coastline with easy hiking paths that loop around and throughout the area, weaving you through lightly wooded areas and along the rocky coast. Plenty of places to sit and enjoy the sounds of the waves crashing against the rock formations, which we took advantage of! It’s humbling and calming to really sit and just enjoy the power and beauty of the ocean in a spot like this.
Beautiful veiws with rocky shore. Tide pools are neat to explore at low tide. Love bringing our dog here to walk along the paths. The park is very well maintained. They have shelters to rent for large gatherings or free first come, first serve picnic table areas, most with charcoal BBQ stands. The picnic areas are well spread out with different settings. Some in sun, some in shade. Some have space for fun and games.
Great view of the Atlantic. Some history behind the site can be read on a notice board across from the parking lot. Plenty of parking, but it is pay to enter. Several short walking trails, and several picnic sites with tables.
$6 after labor day still. Lots of trails and ocean view and plenty of picnic no lighthouse. I have been here many years ago. This time has my lunch on the bench and took a short walk.

There was plenty of parking, and access to the beach was easy. We went in the middle of a sunny Saturday, so it was quite packed, but that's to be expected. We had a great time, and we also enjoyed the picnic in the shade to get out of the sun for a bit. There's also a nice little half mile trail where you can take a nature walk
Loved our beach walk! A visually interesting beach as there are trees and rocky outcroppings that break the ocean views. It’s really quite nice and the beach is very walkable.
Absolutely beautiful spot through the woods , under the bridge, past some beach pines and onto the beach ..nice 56⁰ fall day, beach was empty and the atmosphere was perfect for a walk and some vitamin sea!! Saw some beautiful shells 🐚 most had sealife still in them but cool to see. And the houses along the beach are pretty interesting too. I definitely wouldn't be unhappy with that view. Will visit again soon.
This is a great State Park! I love the paths and all the little cubbies to have private space to relax in. This ocean beach is a bit more protected than others, and tends to be warmer due to being a cove vs open ocean.
Beautiful beach, nice for sitting in the sun, taking a stroll, or a quick dip. We loved the L.L. Bean barrow box and the wash facilities were nice with showers. Wonderful state park and worth the fee to enter. It wasn’t too crowded in the morning time on a week day, with a big parking lot.
Another epically beautiful day at the beach! Plenty of space to sit and low tide is perfect for shell and small rock scavaging (leaving them there, of course!)
One of my favorite beaches to play at in the state of maine. Some seaweed on the south shore, but the kids enjoyed running around in it searching for hermit crabs and for jellyfish, we found a couple that were the size of a dessert plate!
Beautiful beach. Kids laughing and playing. People walking along the shore collecting shells and getting exercise. Swimming in the refreshing water was my favorite activity! Yes some seaweed along the shoreline and in the water but that’s to be expected. No jellyfish when we were there in August. Busy beach this time of year but always space for new arrivals.

Fantastic old building, a great piece of history. You can't go inside, there is a fence around the entrances, but windows and doors are missing, so you can see inside and feel how huge the mansion was. It's hard to imagine! Loved wandering around the area and standing in the ocean nearby.

It was a great spot because there is a pavilion right up top that's great for picnicking. We hiked to the Goddard Mansion last after exploring everything else. The lighting was perfect through the trees in the late afternoon. We entered from the back side coming from the Abandoned Fort Williams Bunker. There are trails back there and it looked so cool with the light. We took a number of photos and most people didn't really care. It looked like most hiked on the more formal trail to the front side. The mansion interior is fenced off but it was still really cool. I think we timed it just right for photos here. Also there weren't very many people interested in it. Looks like most wanted to see the abandoned bunker and then headed back. We would definitely come back to visit this mansion to explore it a bit more and see how it looks in other lighting conditions. We had a lot of fun doing photography here.
Incredible old building. The inside has been blocked off so you can't enter the building itself, but you can see through the windows ans doorways. Remnants of the old fore places are still present and the stone work is amazing. Incredible to walk around and think about how many lives came and went from here back in the day.
Very pretty, but I wish we could've gone inside. There's not much to see.
Nice place to visit with guests. Nice beach and picnic area, cool ruins of the mansion, plus a picturesque lighthouse
Cool old mansion you can walk up to through the woods or from the front. Kids would have fun exploring, although you can actually go inside the house
Super cool historic location! The mansion is visible from the parking lot and easy to walk to. The mansion is fenced in, but you can still get pretty close safely. (Although walking up and around the back is a bit more challenging than waking up to the front) The park is clean and there are port-a-pottys available.
If you visit the lighthouse be sure to check out this end of the park as well. The mansion is beautiful; take some time to read the history and look up a few photos of the building back in its day. There are also plenty of WWII implacments to explore.

Attended Nightingale Fall Festival in Portland, ME and purchased the best hot apple 🍎 cider and pumpkins donuts from Alewives Brook Farm!!
The people are down to earth, literally. Friendly, warm, and welcoming. Purchased fresh strawberries, rhubarb bread, strawberry muffins, and the most delicious strawberry rhubarb crumble. ❤️
We have bought from Alewives for the 40 years we’ve lived here. They only get better. Now, in isolation, we buy from them even more. We bought a share. The Fish, Seafood & Produce are so fresh, the prices are very reasonable, the curbside service is great. There’s no big “food supply chain”; the products are just handled by the Jordan family. Support our local farm. You’ll love it. Let kids “see” and learn where their food comes from.
This place is great! Tucker and his family always have the freshest organic veggies and seafood. The lobsters (especially the soft shell) are always incredible, and the prices are very reasonable. They'll even pack up a box of live lobsters and clams to bring on a plane. If you want an authentic Maine seafood shop experience, I highly recommend them.
Just got awesome tomatoes at Alewives Brook Farm. They always have the best tomatoes and other veggies. Their lobster is the sweetest I have ever had. It was Thursday and it's the day they bake bread, yum. So many things in the shop to list. thank you Caitlin and all the Jordan family. Carol
The people at Alwives took Farm market are so very helpful I am from Indiana and knew little about picking a lobster. I was greatly helped and very happy with all my choices. The fresh produce is simply- the best!
Gem that more people need to discover: delicious, garden-fresh veggies and eggs, and off the dock, amazing seafood! Friendly family-owned business with great variety. Thank you for offering local, delicious, small farm food! ****
Really a nice place to buy live lobster. The staff is great, they explained us everything to travel with the lobster. Carmen was very charming and friendly.
