An 1812 Russian-American settlement with several buildings plus trails, campsites & a beach.

Fort Ross was a highlight of our recent day trip from Bodega Bay. The drive along Highway 1 was breathtaking, with stunning coastal views and winding roads that made for an adventure in itself. The fort itself is rich in history, offering a glimpse into the Russian settlement that once thrived along this stretch of California’s coast. Walking through the reconstructed buildings, including the chapel and wooden stockade, gave us a real sense of life in the early 1800s. The visitor center had excellent exhibits on Russian exploration, trade, and interactions with the local Kashia Pomo people. One of our favorite parts was the beautiful walk down to the ocean. The trail winds through lush coastal terrain and opens up to a stunning view of the Pacific. We spotted seals lounging on the rocks and enjoyed the peaceful, rugged beauty of the shoreline. The weather was cool and breezy—perfect for exploring. If you’re in the Bodega Bay area, Fort Ross is well worth the visit. It’s a great mix of history, nature, and incredible scenery, making for a memorable day trip.
I had an amazing time exploring Fort Ross State Historic Park. The fort stands atop the bluffs and filled with stunning ocean views. The park shows us an amazing history of a Russian outpost settled in 1812. I went on Saturday and there were role players in the fort. There are several trails through the area.
Fort Ross is an incredibly unique and well-preserved historical site that offers a surprising look at a less-known chapter of California's history – its time as a Russian outpost! Very cool place to visit
Cool piece of history. Neat to go into many of the buildings. Its also great there is a bathroom within the fort walls that is a very nice touch. Be sure to bring your walking shoes and beach towel. Its about a half mile walk down to the beach, which is very nice. The beach had jellyfish washed ashore and pelicans diving for fish. The water there is beautiful in color, albeit cold.
Go back in time with Fort Ross Visit. Beautiful woodwork on a large scale and stunning lagoon to hike to! We loved fortifications of a real fort. Very cool place to visit, especially if you enjoy a beautiful walk or more challenging hike further down to the ocean
Absolutely stunning and full of history! Fort Ross is one of those places that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The restored buildings and museum displays bring the early Russian settlement and Native Kashia Pomo heritage to life in such a beautiful way. The ocean views from the bluff are breathtaking, and the coastal trails are peaceful and easy to walk. The park is well maintained, the staff and volunteers are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and there’s a calm, almost spiritual atmosphere here. Great stop for families, history lovers, or anyone driving along Highway 1. Don’t miss the small chapel and the view of the cove -it’s magical at sunset!
It was unexpected for the park to be so immersive and educational. The history was very cool and interesting. The views of the Pacific and areas by the water were gorgeous!
We were really impressed with Fort Ross Historical Park. The 15 minute video at the Visitors Center was really informative, and it was one of the best Visitors Center we’ve been to. We then wanted through the woods to the reconstructed Fort (which has one original building in it) It was really well maintained, we actually saw 2 men sweeping floors there. In all, Fort Ross was a great experience and exceeded our expectations.

Scenic, rocky coastline featuring panoramic views, hiking trails & secluded coves, plus campgrounds.

We arrived to do the hike from Salt Point trail to Stump Beach. The path was easily navigated with some spots of mud (recently rained) The coastline was amazingly beautiful- not sure if we arrived at a special time, but the waves were crashing spectacularly. The last walk down to stump beach was the only real “climbing” you need to do with a small navigation across some water to get to the main beach.
Stunning views of the coast. Very easy to walk around, and due to the remote location, usually not too crowded. A bit of a precarious drive if coming from the south, and coast is similar to Monterey Bay or other locations closer to SF. But nice trails to enjoy both the sea and forest.
Beautiful grounds up the coast. I graded a 4 due to driveway conditions for trailers and their listing of "no potable water on site" but there is all throughout. Just don't hog it is all. Sites are well maintained and bathrooms clean with flush toilets. Amazing scenery not far away moderate trail to rocky ocean. We will be back, maybe after they fix the driveway.
Amazing state park. 10 out of 10 would recommend. Do all the trails, anytime of year, preferably in winter/spring when everything is green.
Awesome park on the Pacific ocean west coast. The rock formations are so amazingly beautiful. Every step reveals a new form.
Low-key state park south of Sea Ranch is hands down beautiful. Amazing and easy hike on the bluff above the ocean. It was a gorgeous 70 something degree and sunny day and the park was nearly empty. Saw sea lions and seals in the surf, and numerous vultures and hawks floating on the updrafts. Was high tide so we couldn’t experience the tide pool areas but I’ll bet they are equally stunning. The sandstone rock formations were beautiful. We scoped out the campgrounds, they didn’t seem like anything terribly special but the location is top notch.
Salt Point is one of my favorite places in the world. I have been coming here since the 1970s. The wood side campground is like heaven. I especially like the rocky shoreline with its amazing rock formations. A short distance up the highway is Kruse Rhododendron reserve it has first growth redwoods and in spring wild Rhododendrons.
We go camp here as an extended family yearly!!! It is a fabulous area.

My daily landscapes are flat… NOTHING like GOAT ROCK which has almost become a sort of pilgrimage for us. The awesomeness of how this humongous rock was formed… There really are no words! It’s like after North America was formed, just to add a final statement to prove grandeur Goat Rock stands proud! A beautiful part of Creation for sure! If you love being outdoors make this a “GOTTA GO HERE”on your bucket list! Enjoy!!
Goat Rock Beach looks absolutely stunning—definitely one of those classic Northern California coastal views. I had planned to visit recently but ended up turning around because the wind was just too intense. Definitely recommend checking the wind forecast before you go, especially if you’re hoping to hang out or take photos. Still on my list to revisit on a calmer day because the views alone are worth it!
Beautiful spot. Bring binoculars to view the seals because you have to stay a good distance away. We also spotted a bald eagle on our visit!
Blew my mind as soon as I drove into Blind Beach parking lot. You get the whole view of Goat Rock Beach. Absolutely incredible. It is very windy! Definitely going to visit again.
Huge beach that makes for a good walk. Dogs are allowed but keep them on leash when there are other people around. Would bring a jacket cause the fog rolls in quick. The current looks strong and the water is cold, would recommend a dip but not a swim.
Beautiful, stretching beach with a wonderful variety of views and scenery
Man… Goat Rock Beach hit me right in the soul. The moment I stepped out of the car, I felt that rush—that excited, adventurous spark I always get when I’m about to explore somewhere new. The wind was wild, the waves were crashing like they were putting on a show just for me, and the whole place had this raw, powerful beauty that kinda grabs you by the chest. Standing there looking out at the ocean, I honestly felt small in the best way possible. Like the world is huge, mysterious, and full of places just waiting to be discovered. I love that feeling. It’s like being in a real-life open-world game where the scenery hits you with actual emotion. The rocks, the cliffs, the way the fog comes in and wraps around everything—it’s dramatic, almost cinematic. I kept stopping just to breathe it all in. And that’s not even me trying to be poetic; it genuinely felt like the beach was talking to me. You know that quiet, deep kind of happiness you get when a place just feels right? Yeah. That. Now, I gotta say—this isn’t your chill “lay in the sand and nap” beach. Nah. Goat Rock Beach is an experience. It’s the kind of place that makes your heart thump a little faster, makes you feel alive, makes you want to explore every corner. I left feeling refreshed, energized, and honestly a little emotional in the best way. It’s one of those rare spots that hits your adventurous side and your soul at the same time. If you love nature that feels wild, dramatic, and unforgettable—Goat Rock Beach is absolutely a must-see. Go for the views, stay for the feeling it leaves you with.
Great beautiful location to see and feel the California coast line. Nice place the hang out, nice sandy beach below the outlet of the Russian River. Don’t recommend going in the water here. Undertows and rough currents. The beauty of the area is peaceful and quaint. The river area there is kayaking and paddle boarding.

Fort Ross Vineyard and Winery is a small producer located in a remote area a few miles from the coast in the southernmost part of the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA. We happen to love Sonoma Coast wines, so we were really looking forward to going to the only tasting room in this area. The tasting room itself is relatively small, but stylish and comfortable - think Restoration Hardware. Even though it was mid-April, it was still pretty cold (50F) when we arrived for our 10 AM tasting, so it was thoughtful of them to have the fireplace going. Wine tastings are by appointment only, so be aware of that before you go. We opted for the food and wine pairing tasting for $75 pp instead of the wine only tasting for $50 pp. The extra $25 was absolutely worth it. When we arrived, we were offered some 2022 Chenin Blanc which was a welcoming touch. For the tasting itself, we were served four wines - the 2019 Bicentennial Chard, the 2019 Fort Ross Vineyard Pinot, the 2018 Top of Land Pinot, and the 2018 Pinotage (the owners are South African and brought over some vines) - we were also served a tasting of the 2019 The Terraces Pinot as a bonus. Each of the four wines were paired with small bites to eat. Bicentennial Chard with “Fennel and Apple Salad, Herbed Mascarpone, Cardamom Crostini” Fort Ross Vineyard Pinot with “Maitake Yakitori, Cherry Teriyaki Sauce, Napa Cabbage Slaw, Macadamia Nuts” Top of Land Pinot with “Forbidden Rice Risotto, Oyster Mushroom, Roasted Cauliflower, Valley Ford Estero Gold Cheese” Pinotage with “Coffee and Ancho Seared Flank Steak, Broccoli Rabe, Cheesy Grits, Pinotage Glaze” (They have a vegetarian option for this one if you ask) The food was delicious on its own, but more importantly, each one paired very well with the matched wine. The entire tasting showcased the food-friendliness and versatility of Sonoma Coast wines. Really well done. Unfortunately, the day was overcast, so the view was limited, but the grounds are beautiful. Overall, it was a great, memorable experience. If you arrive in the area early, you can pass some time by walking the Vista Trail that is located near the intersection of Meyers Grade Road and Route 1. It has beautiful views of the coastline, it’s entirely paved, mostly flat, and takes maybe 15-20 minutes to do the entire loop. Lastly, there is no cell phone reception (at least for T-Mobile) in the area. None. Not even a hint of a bar. So take that into consideration by making sure you have downloaded maps onto your GPS so you can use it offline.
Beautiful winery in spectacular scenery. Not really a tasting room though. As unless you visit on Monday or Tuesday, they only offer wine with a multi course meal - making it more like a restaurant with wine accompaniment. Nothing wrong with that per se, if there wasn’t a large sign by highway 1 offering wine tasting. So, a good one to visit if you plan it in advance and want lunch. But a poor location to drop in on if you’d just like to sample their primary product.
We were very excited about tasting Fort Ross wines based on the reviews that I read. The drive was fairly long and arduous but absolutely worth it as the setting is stunning. The tasting room is very nice with an excellent deck. We enjoyed the wines especially the pinotage, but overall the quality was not as high as I expected. Overall enjoyable and worth a trip to visit the Sonoma Coast, but not likely to visit again.
This winery is a hidden gem! It’s nestled in the forest, but worth the trek! They are very accommodating with dietary restrictions. The food sampler was interesting and tasty!! Great vibes overall. Quiet and private, with beautiful views on the patio. Would definitely go back!
You won't just stumble upon Fort Ross Vineyard, it's remote, but totally worth it! The drive is spectacular with beautiful vistas around every turn! Reservations are required. The drive ends at the beautiful tasting room. This winery produces mainly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Equal to the quality of the wine was the tasting plate; the flavors stood on their own and complimented the wines so well. Wonderfully kind guide was very knowledgeable and helpful!
Had a lovely wine tasting here. The balcony is quite sunny with gorgeous views of the gardens and ocean. Excellent food and wine pairing. Would be happy to return again!
If you’re asking yourself whether the drive is worth it, the answer is yes. We made a reservation for the food and wine pairing, which was an absolute steal at $55 a person. We had fried oysters, a mushroom flatbread, salmon, steak, and dessert, all paired with several vintages of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. John was a fantastic host, even going so far as to give us an extra pour for our photo shoot on the deck. Truly a hidden gem.
Absolutely beautiful winery! The staff are lovely and we enjoyed chatting about wines and the area. Amazing wines and beautiful scenery to look out on as you enjoy in the sunshine

This is a hidden gem on the coast. We have camped at Stillwater Cove campground a few times now and love the trails at the park.
Nice and quiet. Our campsite # 11 was underneath the trees and was very close to #12 which would've been perfect for 2-3 families camping together. The facilities were well maintained but the only issue was the water source. They have E.Coli. I hope that they can fix the problem. The view of the coast is just across the street. Our camp host was very friendly and we enjoyed our stay here. I would love to camp here again someday!
This is a beautiful park to visit for short hiking. There is a .25 mile hike from parking lot to beach, but you have to walk across highway 1 to access. The hike following the stream up into the hillside is stunning and so peaceful under tall redwoods. The downside is, there are fallen trees that have taken out bridges and pathways here that prevent you from using the whole trail. I was glad that the trail allows dogs and even provided poop bags.
Pretty beach and adjacent forest. One of the great things about California is its diverse areas in close proximity, and this park highlights that well. Hiking trails are somewhat limited, but generally well maintained. There are some bridges out, but crossing the creek beds was not an issue at this time of year. Not sure if it will be more challenging when the rain starts again. You do need to cross a somewhat well used road to get to the beach. Beach is pretty, but somewhat small and enclosed, so no ability to walk along the shore. Great little regional park to relax and enjoy nature.
This is a somewhat smaller park with limited hiking trails. The redwood grove here isn't at big as in some other parks. But there's a certain calm feeling here that can't be found in heavily visited areas. Be aware that if you take the trail to the cove, you have to walk across highway 1. It's much safer to just drive to the cove than to hike to it. There is a campground here as well. However, the infrastructure is a bit worn and the sites aren't that private.
Staying at Ocean Cove, which is a beautiful peaceful older campground. We love the location.
Nice little tuck away beach. Awesome for fishing, zen or a picnic
The campground was very small but it didn't feel that way. The campground hosts were very polite and pleasant, as were the park rangers that came around to say hello and give us our parking pass. The walk to the beach was .3 miles from where we were so it's an easy stroll there and back. The restrooms are well lit, clean and well stocked. The camp hosts have firewood bundles to sell you and they even provided a bit of newspaper and kindling. All in all it was a pleasant experience. We had a shared parking area for our camp site for two nights and both sets of campers that stayed next to us were friendly, polite and quiet. We had some fish tacos about 3 miles north of the campground and the view is excellent.

We are east coasters who love Jenner. Kayaking with Watertreks EcoTours is always a highlight of our trips to CA. We always end up working with Keith to get set up. He is an absolute pleasure to chat with and a true fountain of information about the history, flora, and fauna of the area. We always end up chatting with him for a while. For the beauty and remoteness of this location we are surprised that the rental prices are comparable to every other river kayaking we've encountered across the states we've visited and in our home state of PA. What a treat! The location is super convenient, right across from Cafe Aquatica which is an incredible coffee shop where you absolutely must grab breakfast before you get on the water or lunch after. The team here makes sure you're set up to kayak safely, explaining the areas to avoid. They also educate you on how to enjoy the wildlife (which often includes seals sunbathing on the beach) respectfully. Every time we've kayaked here, we've been lucky enough to have seals pop their heads up in the water nearby us. It's a magical experience. Highly recommend if youre ever in the area, and it's worth making a trip if you're not!!
Expensive ($60 for 2 hours per single kayak) but otherwise lovely spot to kayak in and around the estuary where the Russian River meets the ocean. The abundance of bird and marine life makes it extra special, there are seals everywhere, as well as egrets, blue herons and ospreys. The folks running this place are nice, knowledgeable and offer real tips on how to make the most of your time. One of the bonuses of kayaking here is that you can access the north end of goat rock beach that is otherwise inaccessible on foot.
Keith was friendly and knowledgeable and a great representative for this small town business. He offered many tips and demonstrations to make us comfortable when we were on the water. We noticed the pride and care for the way he handled the equipment too. Visited with him several times during our trip and he always greeted me with a great attitude and even more local insight. Our kayak experience was amazing largely to the information and confidence Keith provided us with!
Super easy to rent kayaks here and then we just brought them right in the water! Price was very reasonable and they made sure to answer all of our questions and especially we knew what we need to do for safety on the water. Would definitely use them every time we go vacation there.
Keith was an excellent guide he told us all the best places to stop and the history of the area.
This review is about the booking process and customer service--I would not recommend this company if you want to reserve kayaks in advance of a trip to Jenner. The website is overwhelming and doesn't have an online reservation system. It took a lot of phone-tag to actually reach them, as they're a small operation and spend part of their time on the water--fair. My interactions with the owner were unfortunately frustrating. In a phone call that was filled with random tangents, it took over 10 minutes to book 2 kayaks. There were high winds the morning of my reservation and I suspected kayaking would be canceled, but I hadn't heard from WaterTreks. I called them, and the owner confirmed that day's cancelation. It was another very long-winded conversation. She transferred my reservation to the next day, weather pending, and said she'd call me later that day to provide final confirmation either way based on the forecast. She never called. I would only use this company when doing a walk-up booking. The hassle for advance booking just isn't worth it. 2 stars because they don't charge until your outing.
Amazing experience! Payed around $120 for 2 hours of duo riding between two singles. It was very fun.
The price reflects the training and certifications to operate in a marine protected area. Their hard work is appreciated! As a biologist I highly recommend this location.
