A nice little museum about the talent and craftsmanship of Hida Furukawa carpenters. At the beginning the staff will show you how to play with the hands-on wooden blocks. The building itself is also beautiful with a view of the Setagawa canals.
A small exhibition about the Hida craftsmanship. There are samples and toys for you to assemble to understand how the tight structure between blocks and wood sticks. Unfortunately it was too much fun and I spent too long assembling the sample.
A good place to understand history of their wood craft, design, and principles of jointing. The museum has 2 levels of displays. You can experimenting disassemble and fixing the wood products there. It’s fun! The staff was helpful in bringing us around and sharing the knowledge and history.
The guide has English translations ready to go, making the information very easy to get. It’s a very cool museum for its size. There are hands-on examples, miniatures, displays of tools, and information to help you appreciate why Hida-Furukawa is known as the city of carpenters.
An interesting museum where one can learn about Hida’s majestic carpentry history. Set tickets at ¥800 can be bought, together with the nearby matsuri kaikan (recommended!). 🔨 Wooden blocks can be played with, audio sets can be borrowed, the third floor is tatami where one can rest while looking through the window with a nice view. 🌊 Ghibli stuff can also be seen!
Very cool little museum! Highlights local crafts and construction practices.
No pictures. The place serves as an educational centre how the wood building structures are hole together without the nails in Japan. Which says to be expensive to have such building for houses. I bought it with combination ticket to the festival hall. So paid 800yen in total.
A well curated museum that gives a wonderful insight into the famous local carpentry techniques. The friendly tour guide was fabulous and talked us through the intricacies of the joinery techniques. Perfect place to take kids too. Very reasonably priced at ¥300 with free audio tours

I just had to detour and make this trip to Hida Furukawa and check out if there were any koi fish in public drains/canals. In this very quiet town, where we found ourselves caught without lunch as the shops were literally closed, we found koi swimming happily in public drains. A signboard indicated the koi are kept in winters. Nevertheless, we had such fun and would have stayed longer if not for our growling stomachs
Nice and peaceful small village, worth to visit. All the carp in Seto canal had moved to another pond during late Nov to early Apr (winter time). All my children felt so disappointed 😞 when all the carp can't be seen in the Seto Canal. Just 20min & 240yen if take train JR takayama line from Takayama station.
My daughter really enjoyed feeding the fish along the canal. The koi were active and came right up to the edge, which made it fun and engaging for kids. It was a simple but memorable moment that added to the charm of walking through Setogawa and Shirakabe Dozou Street.
We arrived there during the Obon week (Wednesday). We arrived there around 10 am, and there was already a long line for their parking. It was especially crowded because the parking lot is under construction. We bypassed the parking and decided to park elsewhere. Though it was ten minutes walk (1,000 yen for parking), we felt it was worth the walk as the sightseeing bus was still at the bridge, meaning they hadn’t parked yet. We proceeded to go to the Main Street where there were many shops for snacks. It was my second visit, and I was surprised how crowded it was. Nonetheless, we were able to enjoy Shirakawa-go. Definitely arrive early if you don’t want to wait..before 9 am perhaps.
Beautiful street with carps swimming in the large canals. You can pay 100¥ to have access to a bag of bread to feed the fish. Quiet street with benches to sit and enjoy the serene atmosphere
A peaceful and beautiful place, not crowded. You can walk along the stream and feed the koi fish.
Nostalgic old Japanese town featuring Edo style buildings. The main attraction is the canal behind the buildings where the water is so clean that the owner of respective buildings keep their koi fish there. But please be aware that all the fish will be kept at different places during winter.
A beautiful street in the middle of the very quiet and laid back little town if Hida-Furukawa. The canals are flanked by white-black warehouses and have a very elegant look. It is recommended to visit in late April onwards, during which the canals will be filled with koi (I sadly did not get to see them). Just a short and cheap bus ride from Takayama Nohi Bus Center (Terminal 2)

This a place well worth to stop by... There are not only shops and food facilities but the science museum which shows history of super-kamiokande experiment with some very interesting facts and virtual tours. And it is for free :) Must see... :) Picture shows one of the exposition inside.
Worth visit. University of Tokyo research lab.
Amazing and free. Also had a english immersive version for us.
Very rare place in Japan
(Translated by Google) I have passed by it many times, but never had a chance to stop in, so this time I stopped by as a designated roadside station for SSTR and for lunch. When you think of Kamioka, you think of the neutrino research facility "Super-Kamiokande." The building is silver, which evokes images of space? Science? In addition to snacks/restaurants and shops, the "Hida Space Science Museum Kamioka Lab" is also located here. For lunch, I was tempted by the limited 20 servings, so I ordered the Hida beef rib rice bowl and Araya char siu noodles. The Araya char siu noodles soup is a traditional soy sauce base, but it has a very complex flavor. It seems to be a combination of pork and chicken animal soup and seafood soup with seafood stock, and it has a light yet rich flavor. The noodles have a texture reminiscent of Japanese soba, which is a bit unusual. It goes well with the soup. The char siu is also soft and falls apart easily. The Hida beef rib rice bowl has a sweet and delicious fat. The sweet and spicy sauce goes great with rice. The shop has a wide selection of space science related goods. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to see KamiokaLab, but I'll definitely go next time!

Speaking of Kamioka Town, I thought it was home to the famous "Super-Kamiokande." And it turned out to be true. There was a roadside station with a similar name. I didn't stop there on the way there, but I did on the way back. It was crowded because it was Obon. There were also shops and restaurants. I had Takayama ramen. Afterwards, I went to KamiokaLab, which introduces Super-Kamiokande inside the roadside station. Why is Super-Kamiokande in a place like this? Now I understand the reason. This place is a hidden gem! I learned a lot about Hida Furukawa Matsuri. I watched cinematic videos of the festivals. The guides were very informative and friendly. I was also allowed to try out some of the matsuri equipment. It was so much fun!
A nice exhibit featuring the Hida Furukawa festival. There is a short video/movie in a small theater, marionettes and drums you can try to play with, and a photo spot where you can try out the Tombo pose. There were only a few visitors that time and the female staff took photos for me 🙂 There is also a souvenir shop and a resting area inside the building.
An unexpected treat! Well worth the reasonable price of admission to see the 20 informative and vibrant film. The exhibition hall housed the intricate floats.
Insightful exhibition about the furukawa festival with almost all actual artifacts used on display. Staff are very friendly. They also show an informative mini documentary about the movie. Overall giving you a great experience about the festival without participating one.
A place to understand Hida-Furukawa festival. A theatre to show the festival. Close up looks of the Floats, experience the control of wooden puppet, enter the display float & etc. During the festival, floats will back to their storehouse. Therefore, no floats will be display at the exhibition.
It was fascinating to learn about Hida Furukawa Festival. This museum is well kept, and they have a nice theater to watch a short documentary about the matsuri. ☺️ Set tickets with a discount can be bought, which includes entrance to the nearby crafts museum. 🔨
Worth going to just see the amazing 20-min video presentation of the festival in the mini theatre itself! Friendly staff, and seeing the floats and costumes up close. Tip: received a 200 yen discount coupon from the visitor centre in town to use for this exhibition.
A fascinating museum which explains the local Hida Furukawa Festival. Has displays of all the instruments, equipment and floats used in the festival and has a 20 minute video which shows and explains the festival. The video is Japanese but has very well translated English subtitles. A must see if you're in the area and admission is only ¥500. The staff were also incredibly kind and welcoming.

A local brewery over 300years of history! Every restaurant I had in Hida Furukawa provided sake from this brewery! They are one of the best sake I have ever had. When I walk in, the receptionist is so kind and offer four different sake for tasting. Even my Airbnb host loves sake from here too! Sadly I could not join the brewing tour.
I stopped by Hourai Sake Brewer Watanabe Shuzoten (渡辺酒造店) and got to try both the free samples and the paid tasting set. The staff were friendly and helpful, explaining the differences between each sake. The tasting selection offered a nice range, from crisp, light options to richer, full-bodied flavors. Their signature sake had a smooth finish with a balanced sweetness. Cozy atmosphere and traditional brewery feel made the experience even better. Highly recommend for anyone interested in local sake!
Watanabe is the best sake brewery I know! It’s located in the beautiful scenery of Hida. It’s a small town with a lot of nature around it. The sake from Watanabe comes in a wide range. From standard well balanced to a perfect Daiginjo they have it all! You can taste the rice in the sake. All of the worker are super friendly and will help you with all your questions. It’s a must to see this brewery if you like sake. They have a lovely tasting room where you can try all their products.
Do go for the sake sampler vending machine to try out all Watanabe's offering. 100 yen for each sample.
My wife and I came here for a guided tour of the brewery. A wonderful place, established in 1870, it is incredibly interesting to see their work in action and have the sake brewing process explained. Our guide was knowledgeable and had great English! We were able to taste a special reserve that they don't sell, which was absolutely delightful. Highly recommended a tour if you have the opportunity. Also, we happened to win the secret prize in the 400 yen gacha machine, great prize!!
An absolutely fantastic Sake brewery. I couldn't speak more highly of them. Lovely people. And the sake? What great tasting sake it is. Some of the best in Japan. They are also a jolly lot. Go there when they have their matsuri. Street food, live entertainment from well known Japanese comedians. Great!
Best sake I have ever tasted. We couldn't help but buy a couple of bottles, even though we don't have any space to carry them back home. Guess we have no choice but to finish them in a week ╮( ╯_╰)╭ . They provide free tastings, and there's no pressure to buy. Most of the tourists that drop by seem to be from Japan, and they look like they came to this town just to buy sake from here.
Famous sake brewery. Friendly staff and great sake.

Not many people around when I visited, which made it feel more personal and reflective. The grounds are well-kept, and there's a sense of quiet dignity to the place. A nice stop if you're looking for a more serene side of Hida.
A good temple in the middle of Hida City. ☺️
One of the must-see places in Hida. Very nice Temple next to full of carp fish canal...
Beautiful temple in a very beautiful town. Hida took the crown as my favorite location in Japan.

Beautiful town with beautiful people. We unfortunately went on a day when most establishments were closed but we had a great time just strolling around nonetheless. Special mention for the station master of Hida Furukawa for helping us change our bookings when our limited express was running late. Experienced as he is, he changed our connecting shinkansen too to exactly the right time. We were able to make it back to our hotel in Kanazawa at a reasonable hour because of him.
I know many people come here because of the Your Name anime. However, the station could actually make it more interesting. I understand it might seem like too much since it’s just a train station and not a tourist attraction, but tourists do visit here from time to time. They should be aware of this and consider doing something to enhance the experience.
We were glad, on hindsight, the bus tickets to Shirakawa-go were sold out and we came here for a day trip instead. The entire place was absolutely beautiful, quiet and devoid (mostly) of tourists. We were lucky to also have soba at the local favorite, Sobasho Nakaya, before taking the 4.10pm train back to Takayama.
Hida Furukawa, a good short stay from Takayama or a wonderful day trip. A 20mins train ride from Takayama and you will land in a picture perfect town with beautiful shophouses and canals filled with lively carps ( except for winter ) A charming place to spend half a day strolling the shrines and streets or a short stay away from the crowds in the other larger towns.
Stayed here for several days on my own and loved it. This is not a tourist trap, its a beautiful town where you will relax. Also it has two exceptional Sake breweries, pleasant surprise!
I believe you would have watched the famous anime named “your name-君の名”, So this is the real life location of it, place is very simple, everyone should give a try on visiting the Shrine which was mentioned in the anime, the hida character refers this Hida city so buy that cow 🐮 omiyage also. This place is for anime lovers or else it is same like another places in japan. Since it is a old village things here will give a nostalgic and traditional look.
A cost small station which has been widely known because of the renown Japanese comic movie “your name”. Very thoughtful photo taking guide and tips inside and outside of the station. There are NOT so many trains everyday so plan your trip ahead if you are heading to this amazing place.
Small old town near Takayama. Only 15 minutes by train. The most favorite attraction is a small canal named Seto river. The canel is lined by old store houses with white walls where you can see a billion of craps.

I came to this town to visit the places from the Your Name anime, and this shrine is actually featured in one of the scenes! It completely exceeded my expectations—the beauty and peacefulness of the shrine are just stunning. I love the huge gate (torii) in front. When it snows, the whole vibe changes, and it’s even more magical. Plus, you can catch a nice view of the city from here too.
We love the hike up to the shrine. It's only a short walk from the town (about 20 mins), and once you are up there, the atmosphere is very calm and peaceful, where you are underneath the big tall cedars and can overlook the city.
Very nice & peaceful shrine at the bottom of the forest & a view over the village.
Famous with the movie called “your name”. Silent and sacred place to feel the existence of god in Japan.
Went to Keta Wakamiya shrine on the 1st of 2022 for Hatsumode! The shrine is beautiful in the snow😍. It was packed with visitors so it was hard to find parking. The roads were very slippery, it didn't seem like they have spread salt on the ground to melt the snow or have any antislip measures. There were many elderly there it looked very dangerous for them to climb the stairs and down. I also slipped a few times on way down.
A good place to view Furukawa city under sunshine. A small shrine without many people here, but a little far from train station.
This is a beautiful shrine on top of a hill, serenely surrounded by trees. The best part is you can get a panoramic view of entire Hida-Furukawa from here. And this helps you understand why the shrine has been central to communal life in the area for centuries -- it's as if gods and goddesses were overseeing and protecting all folks down there. A wonderful place to visit, particularly for those who are spiritually inclined. Breathing in and out in front of the panoramic view can fill you with positive energy and inspirations!

This temple is a little more interesting than others. Very nice entrance/gate. Nice grounds inside. I'm at the point where the temples don't interest me much anymore. They're all too similar. But I really do like the manicured trees. I wish our climate at home would allow me to grow one. We came on a Sunday. The temple, like the rest of town, was pretty much deserted. (If memory serves me correctly, there are some nice public restrooms on the temple grounds.)

Let's pray by candlelight with our thoughts. A traditional event that has continued for over 200 years. During the Meiji and Taisho eras, migrant women who returned home from silk mills in Shinshu dressed up and went around the festival, and it became a place for men and women to meet, so it became popular as a matchmaking event. It is a cold winter event, and it is a night event. I can't help but hope that I will have a good encounter. Snow statue candles about 2 meters high were lined up along the street, leading women passing by in kimono to the three temples. Incidentally, it is a subsidiary temple of Honganji, the main branch of the Jodo Shinshu sect. (Translated by Google) Visited for the Chubu Roadside Station stamp rally. Gifu No. 43 Hida Furukawa Ibushi. As shown in the closed status on Google Maps, the store is currently closed due to a change in operating company. It is not necessary for a roadside station to have a shop, so it would be a bit misleading to say that it is closed as a roadside station, but you can use the parking lot as a rest area, and you can also use the restroom. When proceeding with the Roadside Station Stamp Rally, I was concerned about the status of the stamps, but the stamp storage area was set up so that it would not be inside the store. The shops are currently not open, and if you think they won't just put out stamps and put them away, you might be able to stamp them 24 hours a day. However, I stamped it around 10:40, so it's not really helpful. The stamps here were difficult to tell which were up and down. The stamp storage area was dark, so I couldn't really make out the stamps even when I looked at them. The diagram may be a little complicated. It seems that it was stamped in the correct direction, so if you stamp it so that the roadside station mark is at the bottom, the pattern will be in the correct direction. It may have been written which way is on top, as I often see, but I didn't notice that. The stamps are quite large, so I only put one in the stamp book, but they also had small JAF stamps that you often see at Chubu Expressway stations. There was an ornamental sculpture of a man engaged in land development work. The site was large, but the shops were small. There was a shop selling souvenirs, a corner for wooden products, a corner for antiques and recycled goods, and a takeaway snack shop. There was even a bear fur in the souvenir section. Among the antiques were black telephones, electric fans, chests of drawers, and Japanese dolls, all for sale. It was fun to see old scales mixed in with the recycled power tools. I haven't seen one recently, but it seemed like a bear was right there a few years ago. Two mothers were working the takeaway corner at a leisurely pace. ●Hida beef skewers 400 yen ●Hida beef croquette 300 yen We took a stroll while the skewers were being grilled. There was also a place where we could collect spring water. As it is not on a road that connects to Takayama city, there are few cars on the road even on weekends, making it a quiet roadside station. The Hida beef skewers were made with tender Hida beef seasoned with salt and pepper, and the slightly stronger salt and pepper made by a country mother made it even more delicious. The Hida beef croquette was delicious with its coarse breadcrumbs. This roadside station had a very slow and relaxing feel to it. Thank you for the meal. Extensive archeological work has been undertaken in this beautiful part of the Japanese Alps. It is documented in this Castle museum with detailed English descriptions. There are displays of artefacts from 3000BC found on the site and in depth historical accounts of of every subsequent era. Certainly worth a detour off the usual tourist path.
It is a small and cute castle situated on top of the hill. Has a wonderful and majestic view of the town in the valley. I drove from Hida just because I was curious and I was not disappointed. They do close at 4 PM so make sure you get there before closing time. The view was really nice and calming, not much people and the other visitors were local tourist. Nice place to go if you want off the beaten path spots since it’s an easy drive from Hida and Takayama.

Good place to do ski and snowboard Cheap price
So amazing experience and memorable moments with my family. I love how his first ski ❤️❤️❤️
ski trip to Nagareha in Hida district. it is wide and long snow resort to ski and snowboard. on top of the mountain, you will discover another snow resort called 'kokusetsu Nagareha', where you can enjoy skiing on various types of galende, such as advanced, upper intermediate, intermediate, and elementary skiers and boarders. in fact, the last time i visited Nagareha, it was impossible for me to find the top one cz it was snowing heavily then. kokusetsu faces north, so if you are not satisfied enough Nagareha, you don't miss kokusets since the snow condition must be much better than the one facing south.
Small ski resort but it's only 1100 yen for one day ticket on Friday. So cheap make the short course very satisfying.
What am amaxing place on the doorstep of amazing natural wilderness
(Translated by Google) The catchphrase "Why not try going an hour further than usual?" excited me, so I went to Nagareha Ski Resort for the first time on the way back from Hirayu on January 14th! Since it was a weekday, the parking lot and slopes were empty. The staff were incredibly friendly and the views were amazing! I was so impressed with the ground conditions that I almost thought I'd gotten better at snowboarding! It's a place that can be enjoyed by beginners and advanced skiers alike, and what's more... The wider slopes above the 10th Pair Lift have great terrain, are great for fun, and even have a restaurant for a break!!!
(Translated by Google) The sea of clouds is amazing!!! A ski resort with a spectacular view! We went on March 2, 2025. It seems they're open until March 9th this season. The closing date may change depending on the weather, so please check the official website for the exact date. It may be a coincidence, but for me, this ski resort has a high chance of seeing the sea of clouds. Once you reach the top, there are fairly steep areas, narrow areas, and areas that are like natural half-pipes with slopes. I think this is a ski resort that intermediate to advanced skiers who are tired of simple ski resorts or ski resorts with very long lift waits can enjoy. However, I think beginners will also have a great time if they take the shorter lift. There's also a hot spring. I like the mountain hut-style restaurant on the left side of the slope.

Very friendly proprietress greeted us. It was a quiet Tuesday with only one other guest who was leaving. We had the coffee and cheesecake. Sat right beside the garden and everything was immaculate. My wife had a great conversation with her and was able to practice her Japanese. She was very kind and patient.
We are a group of six from Singapore. By chance, we stumbled upon this museum with a café that served exquisite cheese and coffee (a perfect pairing). The Japanese rice sushi was also excellent. The environment was friendly and cozy, and the hospitality was great.
If you enjoy tea & baked cheese cake this is a lovely stop on your Hida Furukawa walking tour. Be mindful you are paying for the experience more so than the food so it is 750yen for each item in the menu. It was a nice experience. The owner is lovely. It is across from an amazing little wood maker shop where you can get quality artisanal gifts and souvenirs.
I was exploring the hidafurukawa area and happened to chance upon this traditional Japanese styled house. Very unique architecture. The owner is an older japanese lady and she was just arriving back after running some errands. She greeted me and invited me in for some coffee and cheesecake, which were delicious. The whole experience of having coffee in a traditional japanese house is worth it. I would definitely return if i ever visit the hidafurukawa area again. Highly recommended.
Spent one lovely summer afternoon in this cafe. We were the only ones there. The owner - a very kind lady - offered her special cheesecake, which didn’t disappoint. It had a siding of fruits: grapes and raspberries. 🍰 Everything on the menu costs ¥750 each, so coffee + cake was a little expensive, but still worth it if you aim to really relax inside a traditional Japanese home. 😌 There wasn’t really a museum, but the lady owner was very entertaining. She told us about the town’s matsuri and gave us some pamphlets as お守り 🥰
Had a lovely visit with Toshiko and her friends. Cheesecake, pastries and coffee served on antique bone china in an authentic Hida household. Oishii!
Nice Japanese hospitality. Cheese is very light and delicious. Matcha tea is very good.
Bumped into this cafe with art displayed, has a nice miniature garden and neat set up. I recommend the cheesecake and the coffee.
