A fun little campground nestled in the woods along the lake shore. The sites are pretty private with trees between almost all the sites. The roads are decently maintained and the staff is nice during my few interactions I had. A great place to go as a family or with friends for a summer vacation!
This campground alone is great. Decent sized sites, well treed and our was close to the lake. The beach is not the greatest as it is covered in goose droppings and quite rocky and also the lake itself had lots of leeches. I went paddle boarding in the lake and when I got off, my legs were covered in tiny leeches. Although the lake wasn’t the nicest, our biggest concern was a gun range close by. We had no idea that there was a gun range anywhere close to the campground. The noise is not very pleasant and our dog is frightened by loud noises like this. If you are looking for a relaxing weekend camping, maybe reconsider coming here because the constant noise of guns going off near by caused quite a disturbance.
We loved camping at Thunderlake! It was a beautiful campground! The Sites were very clean! We didn't enjoy the beach too much since there was so much poop everywhere and we were told there were leeches in the water so we didn't get into the water! Overall, we would definitely camp there again!
Beach is pretty much non existent, not maintained with no play structure., definitely no playground. The trails are very nice and not too difficult for most. Was nice and very peaceful but lack of an actual, maintained beach was very disappointing.
We camped in the non-powered C loop. The sites were pleasantly spacious, heavily treed and spacious which we really loved. Some of the fire pits were annoyingly close to the edge of the pad so it was hard to have a group encircle the pit. The looney shower house was clean but it did have a moldy smell inside. The lake had not bloomed with algae yet which was a pleasant surprise for August but welcomed. We were excited to see a kayak rental out by the lake. The beach unfortunately has been taken over by the birds, Canada geese and seagulls….there were too many faeces all over to enjoy the sand. We enjoyed the peace and solitude camping at Thunder Lake, we drove down to the office for an ice cream cone, there was a wide variety to choose from including a sugar free and lactose free option. Be aware there is a $5 fee at the dump station. Overall we had a very nice time here, will come again.
This campground is not far from Barhead and Edmonton and Barhead is close enough to get supplies as needed. The campground has some nice walkways and beach area minus the Goose poop in one area. Some of the buildings really need updating and repair. The store has been waiting to be fixed for a long time as the floor caved in and they are forced to use a temporary trailer. The shower is just sad with its condition. Someone installed rails for the men's handicap shower in such a way that you can't put the bench down for the handicap person. Didn't matter anyways as the coin operated shower didn't work. Also the handicap toilet door opens inward so it would be impossible to get the chair inside and close the door. Hopefully no handicap person needs to use this place. Ok, in other issues, it was very quiet for most of the week with the nighttime sounds of Geese, coyotes, cows and other birds which all changed to the generator party on Friday. We had a group of three who all ran their generators from 10pm until 9 am with the loophole of "I need it for medical reasons" We managed to get them to cut it down to 1 on Saturday night and after one guy left it was all quiet on Sunday night. So I guess three needed it but it was really only one. This is ridiculous as you ruin it for everyone just because you couldn't get into loops A and B which are powered. My guess is they wanted 3 sites together but we're late booking into A or B so they said screw it and we will just run our generators. The park guy said that group camping was unused all weekend and maybe the generator group can camp out there away from others who want to actually enjoy the outdoors. I have a video which I shot at 1am when I couldn't sleep but it wouldn't let me upload the whole thing.
Fantastic spot for camping. Great sized sites, very well maintained. Great on site store for all your camping needs and some snacks. Very reasonably priced firewood that burns very well. They will even drop it off right at your campsite. Great vibe, laid back and very friendly. Best "site" in our opinion is and lot in "site A". Great proximity to water and the store. Great, well maintained beach. Only problem is the leaches. They were clearly visable. There were quite a fiew. Would highly, highly recommend this place for camping. We will be returning for sure.
Red flag upon driving in… which I’ve never seen posted at a campground before “camping non-refundable” then it listed a host of reasons which people must have cited in the past from mosquitoes to smoke! Yes, it was very smoky but maybe they could add to their list…leeches ( there are bags of salt available to get them off you at checkin!), blue green algae, bears in the area, sound of gunfire from adjacent gun range and insult to injury the single building with flush toilets and showers doesn’t open until 9am. Dude was late, 1/2 showers wouldn’t work at all and the one that turned on was icy cold with 3 razor sharp streams of water! I would have requested my loonies back but office not open in the morning! How convenient for them. Boo! Thumbs down!
