It's worth taking the time to slowly walk through the Creamery and admire the past importance of localized farming, simple steam generation and the mechanical applications steam drives. . Then add the wonderful end product created from milk! Markerville is wonderful to visit and admire.
We went during the August 21 show and shine and we were so pleasantly surprised with the entire community! A fantastic slice of history in Alberta . We got to experience the best of this community with food, fantastic pie and ice cream along with arts, crafts and live music. The setting of this community is very quaint. We will be back for some peace and quiet and bring a few of our friends to camp next time
Awesome historical location that informs and teaches you about a creamy and how cream is separated from milk and then how butter is made. Then you can have ice cream right there and enjoy the history behind it. I was here 20 years ago and it was enjoyable now as it was then. I would recommend coming here if you can make your way here. There are some interesting activities to participate in and other interactive things. Lots of seating to relax on and a bridge to cross over to a beautiful park area.
A small but well thought out museum. It is interactive enough that my 6 year old enjoyed it. He looked at all the machinery and I told him what their jobs were. My 9 year old and I enjoyed it too. Educational signs but interesting. The cafe has plenty of outdoor seating in the lovely green area, some of which is covered. The short menu is well executed. They sell Foothills Creamery ice cream, which is good quality. After you visit the museum, take time to walk around the town. There are numerous historical interest points.
We have heard about the creamery for a couple of years now and we decided it was time to see what it was all about. We were not disappointed. Follow the interesting production of butter in the old days. It’s interesting how a 20 hp steam engine by the use of various jackshafts provided power for the whole operation.
Went for ice cream at this place. What a joke really as you stand in a long line up finally get to order and they tell you that you have to go to the back yard pay for it then bring the receipt 🤣 all this and not one sign any where warning customers The ice cream certainly wasn’t great I’ve had better from Canadian superstore yellow box creamsicles and I’m not sure if it’s even made on the spot as I notice a worker carrying a tub of frozen ice cream from somewhere in the back forty. Disappointing to say the least! And poor management. Sorry forgot to take a photo the car show and shine I lost my head at some of the nice oldies
Awesome ice cream flavors and staff! We have been visiting the place from last 8 years and never got disappointed! Last year we called and they stayed for 20-25 minutes after closing as we were driving from Pigeon Lake and we did not want to miss their ice cream! Highly recommended place!
Interesting history of Markerville, the Creamery Industry and about life in Alberta in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Be sure to visit the monument to Stephansson the poet of the Rocky Mountains near the Creamery. Also only a few kilometers away is the Stephansson hose historic site.

From the outside it doesn’t look like there’s a whole lot to do, however when you get an engaging tour guide like we had yesterday an otherwise small little house becomes a big interesting adventure. We spent easily an hour and a half to two hours in the house fully engaged in the stories of the tour guide, and the immersive explantations of life at the house at the objects that it contains. We all know the adage don’t judge a book by its cover, well don’t judge this house simply by a cursory look.
We drove all the way out here and were told we were not allowed in because there was a school tour. No notifications are posted anywhere and they show OPEN on Google. Why any historical site would turn paying people away is beyond reason.
A day trip to Markerville is not complete without visiting this spot. Excellent guide, she will tell you all the details and stories you want to know.
Adorable, educational and a firm commitment to historically accurate time period items when original items aren't available. You really enjoyed our tour guide and absorbed everything about this charming museum.
So happy that this little piece of Albertan/Icelandic history has been preserved and restored so well. The tour guides, Alex and Jenna in our case, were knowledgeable, friendly and engaging. They have self-guided tour pamphlets in English, French and Icelandic if that is more your speed. Would highly recommend if you’re ever in the Markerville area!
Disappointed. Went to this museum just to be turned away because of school groups in attendance. No where did we see signs that it was closed to the public, nor were there any posted signs letting the general public know. Plus, nothing online to indicate this. My recommendation is not to visit this museum until schools are closed for the summer. This was the second museum today that I was turned away from sure to school groups. I guess, these museums get enough provincial and federal funding grants to turn away paying customers who support the local economy. My review will be upgraded if and when I'm able to return
A gem to visit and learn about Stephan G. Stephansson – Poet of the Rocky Mountains and the lives of his family over the years. The Stephansson’s home is a wonderful snapshot in time. With the costumed interpreters helping bring this story to life. The home has very interesting furnishings of the period.
Very interesting homestead museum, where a famous Icelandic Canadian settler & poet lived and farmed with his family. Guided tour was excellent.
