You can experience a very traditional Portuguese cityscape here, it's absolutely beautiful to take it all in! It's hard to believe that someone did all of this work by hand, stunning to be there in person. We went during the day and at night to really appreciate it all.

Historical architectural gates in public square. It's beautiful and works as a central mark for the city. You can easily get from there to the military museum, churches, chapels, botanical garden and marina. It is next to the town hall. Usually they start walking city tours from these gates.

Worth spending some time here. The entrance is free. One hour is more than enough. You’ll see some pineapple plantations, and I highly recommend trying the local products such as the pie and liqueur.

There is a cafe/bar with pineapple food and drinks (made from their produce) and a shop where you can also buy some stuff to go (gifts or to consume at home). Large pineapple plantation with several greenhouses you can visit. Information at the greenhouses themselves is very limited and there was noone to guide us through the plantation at the time of our visit. There was however a video on pineapple farming available for view in the pineapple collection exhibition. The gift shop has a few quite expensive ananas products but also merchandise from the azores and pineapple themed. There is also a small cafe offering cakes made with pineapple.

Pineapple farm, entrance is free of charge. You are able to see different stages of pineapple farming. Near the entrance, there is a gift shop and a bar. You can drink drinks made of pineapple. Guided tours are offered of this long lava tube system with 3 sections & many geological structures.

Its Volcanic lava tubes and rock formations very safe, it an easy walk & accessible, for most people but its not flat and there isn't any lifts just around 40-50 stairs and steps. This need booking a day before you dock or more if you've internet. A gem of a place to go to. We hired electric bikes on line from bike hire in the port, and cycled to the place which is only 3 miles from the port. We booked a tour at 10:30 cost was just few euro. Really impressive attraction and very interesting and Unique. DONT MISS out.

It’s great to hear more of the reasons why the island has formed as it is and the measures being taken to ensure that the geology remains as long and safely as possible into the future. AMAZING!! We did the short tour at the beginning of our vacation. Staff here is so nice and friendly and they explained everything well. I then proceeded to do the long tour three days after (please note: the long tour only goes once a week and has space for 5 people so you have to book it weeks or even months in advance. I was alone and could join the group of 4 that had already booked the tour). The long tour is soooo incredible, you will have to walk on rocks, and crawl through tight spaces. Again, be prepared, if you are claustrophobic I do NOT recommend this tour. You also need to be in a decent shape to do the long tour (I am not a sporty person, but I am in a decent shape). If you like adventure, I really, really recommend the long tour. Our tour guide (I believe his name was Hugo) was also amazing and so so nice. I loved this place!!

Make a reservation in advance, because they quickly sell out! It's definitely a must see if you're in Ponta Delgada. The short tour is perfect if you're not used to exploring caves. The paths are a bit difficult to walk on, so make sure you're wearing sturdy shoes that support your ankles, and you're in good physical condition (not prone to falling). The temperature in the caves was around 15°C and it wasn't very wet. Our guide was very knowledgeable on volcanic caves and gave us a good tour. We loved all the information she gave us. We visited two caves, which were very interesting to see. The weekly long tour allows you to crawl further into the caves, so make sure to wear old clothes that protect you from the super sharp rocks.

English guide was very experienced and told us very interesting info not just about visited cave, but about Azores in general. I really suggest to visit at least the short circuit, but the long one (done once per week I think) might be even better.

We took a long tour, and it was fantastic! Here you experience nature as it is, get to see and feel the cave same as pioneers and scientists do 🤗. Wide galleries and narrow passages, massive lava rings, shiny lava glass ceilings and lava-cicles are still pictured in my eyes! It is great that you can come to nature that close in Azores. So grateful to our guide Hugo and his team for this excellent tour, and for their work behind the scenes on preserving and exploring the caves!

This was a very interesting subterranean attraction to check out in Ponta Delgada. They offer a 45 minute (short) tour with helmets going a few hundred metres into the lava tube tunnel and a longer tour with crawling through smaller spaces. The short tour was informative and the guide was quite entertaining. Fascinating geology and relatively inexpensive and educational. BOOK A RESERVATION AHEAD OF GOING. We went in the vacation shoulder season (October) thinking it wasn't necessary and we ended up booking the next day and coming back.

A challenging hike, with a series of steps & pipes, leads to this waterfall in a nature reserve.

Such a fun hike for kids. Well marked and not too steep although very muddy in spots. You also walk through pastures and town. There are toilets and a playground at one parking area which is also a great lookout. We had lunch at the food truck (smashburgers and beer) before heading out.

An excellent and very easy hike. The waterfall is simply beautiful, even in this depleted version, when a large part of its water is taken away by the hydroelectric power plant. For those who want a little more adventure, there is the possibility of climbing to the top of the waterfall on a very steep hike.

PLEASE NOTE!! The hike to this waterfall is really long and difficult. If you are really afraid of heights DO NOT take the hike tour. We were not able to finish it as it was so challenging. Online is it marked as a hike of 7,5km, but it is 8,4km and for the most part you will be walking on the street. It was not pleasant, not easily marked and we do not recommend it. You can also drive to the waterfall, that would be more pleasant for most. The small part of the hike that takes you through the forest is nice though. P.s. the bridge on the picture is quite high and the person walking behind us was not a fan of heights and did not want to cross the bridge, so keep that in mind.

Right now the main trail is washed out but you can enter on a trail up through the public parking lot up the hill to the right. We had our baby grandson with us and while its a bit of climbing we were able to do it. I the past we had done a longer portion of the trail and its all worth it! You wont regret it!

You can’t go all the way down so you need to park your car and travel by foot. Steep paved road going down & back up (which is the hardest part). But it’s doable so don’t worry too much about that. No toilets, no place to change into your swimsuit. Only a little pineapple seller was there. It was quite crowded, and there were people who were doing some adventure climbing down the waterfall which ofcourse made the nice scene a little less nice. Make sure you wear watershoes, the rocks can be slippery! Swimming is nice, you can touch the ground everywhere except for close to the waterfall. Lovely place!

Solid little waterfall with a swimming area available for those interested. We were lucky and got there just before a big crowd of people arrived and the area isn't the biggest so be prepared to wait to take pictures. Also, the path down is paved but it is also steep with ~450 paces going one way - just a caution in case you have limited mobility or physical restrictions.

We have done the Hike PR5 (SMI) in Wikiloc. It was about 9km and it was amazing. Not too complicated or difficult and very well signalled. It took us through some really beautiful spots and one of them was Lagoa das Empadas. Really recommend this hike around Sete Cidades you can see all the important viewpoints and Lagoons: Lagoa das Éguas, Lagoa Rasa, Lagoa Azul, Lagoa Rasa, Lagoa das Empadas etc.

Respectable military collection including some really interesting and historically valuable items. The museum is located in an impressive fort from the 16th century and in addition to the military exposition it offers some nice views over the adjacent port and the town of Ponta Delgada. If you are into military history or you would like to learn a thing or two about the Azores from a military poit of view, this is a must-visit place. For other casual tourists it is still worth the visit just to admire the intricate and well kept insides of this majestic fort. The small entrance fee is totally worth it.

Admission is €3 per adult, cash only! Public restrooms are available inside the grounds. Plan for about 1 to 1.5 hours to explore everything at a relaxed pace. The museum offers a fascinating collection of military artifacts — from cannons, artillery, and machine guns to rifles, knives, and historic uniforms. A highlight of the visit is the chance to walk through the interior of the fortress itself, giving a real sense of its historical significance. Don’t miss the upper levels of the fortress, where several viewpoints offer stunning views over the city and the ocean. It’s a great mix of history and scenery in one compact, well-kept site.

Beautiful museum with lots of interesting facts about the island, the aviation industry, and the 2nd World War. The entry was only 3€ per person, and it was definitely worth it! The only minor flaw was that the engineering room did not have English translation on the items. Other than that, it was definitely Wort the visit! Very interesting old church, Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião, with many elements, such as the ornate main entrance facing Portas da Cidade city landmark, built in the flowery and intricate so-called Manueline style (often observed in Lisbon). The initial construction works on the church began in the first half of the XVIth century. As various other buildings in the Azores, the church combines baroque gilded opulence and stark blackish stone materials quarried locally using basalt lava rocks.

Beautiful fort and great that it has been so well preserved. Impressive items from various wars are nicely displayed. It was fun that the gatekeeper immediately knew we were from the Netherlands — that instantly created a connection. A visit to this fort is definitely worth it. Truly recommended!

Built in the 16th century, this fortress once protected the island from pirates and invading forces. Today, it offers beautiful panoramic views of the city and the surrounding landscape. You can walk around the outside for free, but to enter the fortress and museum, there’s a €3 fee for adults. The visit is definitely worth it for both the historical context and the scenic vistas.

Nice historical place in the city. It is a museum inside if you like military objects. The entrance ticket is only 1 euro, the guy at the desk was super nice. The museum is not big according to their map. We did not go inside, because it was raining and we did not want to walk around much. But we will definitely visit it next time.

We wandered around the fort looking at all the exhibits they were very interesting. Many were in English, but you were able to get the gist of it if it was not in English they have inside areas and outside areas to wander and I would definitely recommend this activity, especially if it’s raining

Lots of history to read and see. Worth the 3€ fee. The grounds are nice to walk around with great views of the marina. Their collection consists of a wide variety of weapons and uniforms across the centuries to modern day. Was surprised as it isn't a popular destination on the tourism guides. A definite place to visit with military history interests.

A wonderful part of history on the shores of Ponta Delgada. At only 3 Euros each, it was an inexpensive attraction with lots of WWII history to see at your own self-guided pace. My only regret was that there was not enough history on the origin of the fort.

Definitely the best place to buy vegetables, fruits and fresh meat. The quality is incredible and you also meet very friendly and passionate local farmers that can help you to buy seasonal products. Much much better than any supermarket on the island and it also have incredible prices. It is algo the best sport to get honey, flower and cheese. Highly recommended!

Large botanical garden with entrance to the right of the chapel. Price is 5 € and you get a card. There are two toilets. The first is next to the kiosk. Second behind the rose garden. Many old trees, as well as beautiful bushes and flowers. Is not maintained. But you can ignore that, and just enjoy that this is nature with different poultry.

If you are in the area, this place is a must visit! Trees are breathtakingly beautiful, they open at 9 am until 19 pm. Entrance is 5 euro which gives you all day entrance. I ended up doing 90 min in the morning then came back for an hour before they closed. Pictures don’t do justice so come and see it yourself

This is a very nice public park in Ponta Delgada. Very well manicured. Old ruins. Nice trails. Ponds, but most notable plants from all over the world on display and information signs to tell you what you were looking at. There is also a cafe. Oh… and in one area there are quite a few chickens and ducks running around…. Keeps things interesting, I guess. This was relaxing. No entrance fee. No crowds. Just a nice experience.

I am usually not a big fan of botanical gardens, but this one is really great. Small pathways with branches reaching in, jungle like, dense plantation looking very natural. You can step off path everywhere. Huge trees and few visitors make this garden a must see. Especially recommended on hot days

We stumbled on this place in search for something to eat during a 10hr flight layover. What an amazing find, from the caves to the huge exotic trees! The ducks and other birds were fun to watch there is even a little restaurant with really good food. Definitely worth a visit when you're in San Miguel

Wonderful park to go for walks. So quiet and relaxing in the off season. I saw loads of deers, they even came to the fence to get fed with grass. A couple of cats live there too and they’re super friendly. There are loads of plants in lush colours. It’s free to walk around the grounds and there’s free parking too.

Definitely worth the stop! A really neat park with several different playgrounds intermixed with several different animal exhibits. There were deer, birds, chickens, turkeys. The kids enjoyed playing on the playgrounds and seeing the different animal exhibits. The park was really well maintained with an open bathroom. Very nice walking trails that were easy to follow and took you through the beautiful landscape of the park. Would make a great place to go for a run. We were there in early season so not much was flowering but I would bet the park was even more beautiful later in the spring.

This place is absolutely AWESOME. I highly recommend stopping at a supermarket and getting some meats / supplies as the park has free wood for a cookout. Just bring some food and everything you need is here, a mini zoo, playground, amazing plants, trees, bamboo, a maze out of plants to walk through, its just an incredible place. If you love baking they even has ovens, so you can not only grill, but bake. Unlike anything I have ever seen in our country.

This is a really nice park with a series of trails for all abilities. Very easy to make loop hikes from a half mile to probably up to three miles. The viewing tower at the top of Pico do Cascalho has amazing views of the island, be sure to go on a clear day.

Well located, spacious mall with wonderful views of the city and the Atlantic. Food courts, a large food market and free parking turned this mall into the main gathering, eating and shopping place not only to locals but also for visitors from the other Azorean islands, mainland Portugal and tourists from around the World. It has spurred businesses in the surrounding areas making it more and more a one stop shopping spot for all sorts of goods and services ranging from groceries to technology, hardware, home remodeling and personal care.

Parque Atlantico IS THE BIGGEST mall on the biggest Island in the Azores. Super Market has the best deals on the island, has high end shopping and a food court on the top floor. Very nice place.

It's a shopping mall/complex so there's the usual mix of shops for clothes, homewares and pharmacy stuff. There's a large supermarket selling some decent stuff, including portuguese hot chicken and has a good sized bakery. The entrance to the mall has a life size sperm whale suspended above the escalators. There's an ex whaling boat on display in the lower mall, which is fascinating to see up close. There's often photo galleries popping up as well. Oh and there's a cinema, which is also quite nice. The food area is pretty comprehensive, with lots of choices, there's the usual, maccy D, burger king, kfc, but there's other choices that may appeal more, such as wok to go, and local Azorean or Portuguese outlets. Just next to the mall is a good sized diy store which is really handy for loads of other stuff.

This is a small-medium sized mall, but probably the biggest on the island. It is modern and clean and there is a lot of underground parking available for free. The mall has two floors with an eating area and cinema upstairs too. There are a few shops and also a large supermarket at one end.

***Update This time in daylight and I admit that any time of day and weather conditions make this place worth stopping for a few photos. Very postcard-like End the day in a photo-perfect setting. This is the church that my great grandfather was baptized in. The altar is beautiful with gold leaf everywhere. The church is dedicated to both St. Joseph and to Mary’s Immaculate conception. It also has a side altar to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary.
