I appreciate that you have to pay for quality but I couldn't help but be left feeling that this was a hard to justify over extravagance, which detracted some of the joy away from the actual meal, especially as I had an equally good steak at the Tickell Arms in Whittlesford recently with all the trimmings for less than half this cost. By the time we added two glasses of wine to this, another £28, we were left having to share an extremely delicious chocolate mousse with raspberry sorbet between us, another £12, to avoid bankruptcy proceedings being instigated. Despite questioning the cost with the waiter I was merely told that I could always choose something else from the menu if I so wished. Perhaps I am now dining at establishments above my station in life. The hotel is built in a Victorian house and you notice how lovely it looks inside as soon as you enter. I did not get an opportunity to stay in the rooms there or have dinner there though, but I did notice how well designed and decorated it looked as I walked in. At the bar, I was greeted by a lovely gentleman, who I’ve been told is David, the General Manager of the hotel. David asked me what my preferred choice of cocktail would be and when I mentioned a Sidecar, he instantly agreed to it with great enthusiasm and graciously made me a Sidecar which wasn’t even on the cocktail menu. And oh my, was it delicious! I was left so impressed by the fact that he’d agreed to make a drink which there was no need for him to agree to, or no expectation to even know of, but therein lies the skill of a mixologist, in my opinion. Really hoping the experience (noise level) was a one off as it really did need addressing but when I looked towards the bar, all staff were just staring at the group…eventually the owner went over but it was a little late. It would have been better to address this as soon as it started. Would I visit again? Maybe..Bury St Edmunds has so much choice of amazing places to eat so would try them first…..

The hash browns are not the regular triangular ones but the small round ones, and the halloumi was 2 very small thin pieces. Really not good enough for a £16 breakfast!! To add insult to injury, the food itself just tasted very meh and the mushrooms were cold. I don’t mean they had gone cold - I mean they were literally stone cold as if taken straight from the fridge! When we raised this with the waitress, she wanted to take our entire plate away just so they could change the mushrooms. Given we had waited so long for the food in the first place we declined and asked for the replacement mushrooms to be brought to us. They then still added a 12.5% discretionary service charge to the bill which, aside from being a pathetic Americanism which has no place in the UK, isn’t remotely justified considering the poor experience. To note the toilets are downstairs, mixed gender and very dark. All in all a shocking experience. £40 for a small, mediocre breakfast with cold mushrooms. Do not recommend.

Our most recent visit we ordered burgers which were pretty good, bang bang chicken noodles which is my favourite dish here and sausage/chips/beans for our children. I had a side of spinach which seemed like it had been cooked in the sun or something, it was just completely dry and flaky 😅 not sure what they had done with it. I do have an issue with our latest visit, as my son who's 7yrs old was served his meal 15 minutes before the rest of us. We were only told this would be the case when they had brought his plate out. I queried the reason and the server said it had always been that way to serve children quickly so that they aren't waiting but it's never happened on any of our previous visits. I've heard of this practice but my son is 7yrs old, not a baby and at the same time they didn't do that for my daughter who is 9yrs old. It just seems very silly as he was completely finished in 15 minutes and then was left waiting anyway for all of us to finish so we kind of ended up rushing our meal and it defeated the entire point of having a family meal out together. We weren't having the food due to necessity, it was for a nice time. If it was urgency we would have simply grabbed a sandwich somewhere. So I wish the restaurant would address this and query individual customers at the time of taking an order, if they require this practice to occur.
