BUT the best part is yet to come: I decided to also order what was described on the menu as “Sourdough with olive oil”… where to start! They brought out a plate covered in the messiest bits of randomly broken STALE BREAD (I swear to god it was so stale that I wish I was able to tell whether it actually was sourdough or not, but I am 99% sure it wasn't) which had been put in the oven to be made warm, served with a mini cup of oil (not olive oil, certainly… cheapest olive pomace oil, at best) at the bottom of which there was so much salt that would have puzzled even the most discerning palate. Said salt had been of course tactically placed there to shift the attention from the low quality garage oil passed up for olive oil. Do you understand how insulting this whole thing was?! Unfortunately, I was not able to address this when I was there, as I was a guest at a birthday lunch with people I had only just met and most of all, I did not want to embarrass the birthday host. One last thing: the staff just adds to the ridiculousness of this place: I won’t go into details about this, as I think the food insult is hurting enough. This Fuller’s pub offers a familiar selection of beers, a couple of craft options, and four cask ales including Fuller’s ESB. I opted for a Cruzcampo — an excellent pint, though the price was on the high side. The food menu features British pub classics, Mediterranean dishes, and Sunday roasts. I dropped in just before 2pm on a warm, overcast Saturday afternoon in August. When I arrived there were a couple of locals sat in the main bar and about a dozen or so people enjoying the beer garden. The atmosphere was really laid-back, almost like being in a village pub out in the sticks. The service was spot on too — I had a great chat with one of the management team, who took the time to tell me about the pub and even showed me an old photo of the pub. Visiting The Rose & Crown was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I loved the traditional pub decor, the beer choice will please most and the cultured imbiber and also the friendly and personable service. A very nice pub indeed. This is a deceptively large, one-bar, two-room pub with a comfortable, contemporary feel. The main bar area is laid out in an L-shape, with the traditional servery following the line of the bar. The decor features a bare-board floor, colourful furniture, historical prints and modern lighting. At the back of the main bar is a dining area with a vaulted ceiling. At the rear of the pub, there’s a good-sized beer garden with a covered area and a children’s play area. This Fuller’s pub has a solid line-up of beers, including four cask ales and some craft options. I kept it simple and opted for a Cruzcampo. My pint was great, price point felt a bit punchy. The food menu offers pub classics, with roasts available on Sundays. I arrived around 12:30pm on an overcast but warm Saturday lunchtime in August. There were a few local punters in the main bar and some young families in the garden. There was a lovely local feel to the pub, and everything felt chilled and relaxed. The service was top notch—the team on duty were welcoming, friendly and courteous. A solid selection of beers, stylish surroundings, a family-friendly environment and personable service make this a popular spot for local patrons.
