Historical landmark
Hierapolis, an ancient city located 18 km north of Denizli, is a significant historical site within the same area as Pamukkale's travertine terraces. Founded in the 2nd century BC by Eumenes II, it was named after Hiera, wife of Telephus. The city boasts temples and religious structures that make it a holy place. Hierapolis was once a thermal center with hot springs attracting visitors seeking health and beauty treatments for thousands of years.
An amazing place to visit near Pamukkele. It is most famous for the vast layers of travertine formed from sediments of minerals from hot spring water flowing through the hills. The views are fantastic, other worldly. You are allowed to walk on a section of travertines, but only with bare feet. Watch out, it can be slippery. It was used as a spa as early as 2nd century BCE. A city was formed around it and many people who came there never left leaving behind a necropolis.

Great day out, very pretty and amazing sight. The salt was a bit hard on your feet at times as you can't wear shoes until you get to the top. It was nice to paddle in the pools.
Annmarie S — Google review
If you love going back in time to see how the ancient people lived, then this is a must see place. The amphitheater is mind blowing and breathe taking. This was a city that had Roman influence and the artifacts and carving were mind boggling.
Kogie R — Google review
Beautiful site, but frustrating experience Hierapolis is stunning, with incredible ancient ruins and breathtaking views. However, the visitor experience could be much better. They charge $10 for Bluetooth headphones, but you can’t even use them during the tour, which feels misleading. While the history and scenery are worth seeing, the management of tours and extra charges leaves a lot to be desired.
Nafiz I — Google review
Completely bad ass. Mega old city up on a hill. The tomb of Philip the Apostle, BTW it's empty. Calcium pools at sunrise, i cut my foot in there. Balloons at sunrise...way cool. Oh and the Gates of Hell. You can't go in there because, yep, you'll die. WOO HOO!!!
Mark S — Google review
It's a quiet good place but to much people and looks kinda artificial. Not enough water and it could be very hot in a sunny day. And in the entrance they try to scam you. They'll give you 30 euro tickets then will charge like 40 euros and won't even ask if you wanna pay or not I just realized it because I was paying for few people and the money it deducted was like insane then I asked them why have I been charged extra they said that they gave me a headphone that I never asked for then somehow I managed to return the head phone and get refunded but I bet 90% of people who are paying by a card won't even notice
Behind T — Google review
Nice place to see some history, be prepared to walk and get lots of sun. Has some cafes for food and drink Be aware that if you want to walk down you need to go barefoot. Otherwise you're taking one of the roads back down (long way). There is parking even outside the lot along the road and some other places for free.
Sascha K — Google review
Its beautiful place, but unluckly there is less and less water. So many ruins to see. If you want to see everything one day may not be enough. Make sure to bring much water with you, especially during hot days. Price for entrance per person:30€

Cleopatra Antique Pools, located in Pamukkale, offers a unique and historical hot spring experience. Situated between the museum and the Temple of Apollo, this man-made pool is filled with mineral-rich hot spring water at 36 degrees Celsius. The setting is surreal, with half-submerged pillars and scattered marble debris creating an atmospheric ambiance.
Lovely place to take a dip in the thermal spring. Clicking photos is prohibited so I could not click many pictures here. There is an entry fee and one needs to carry towels and shorts inside if you are planning to take a dip inside the pool.
Rahul P — Google review
Cleopatra pool is under renovation and the fence around it doesn’t let you even see inside. Also, the travertine pools are nearly all drained. There are 3 hidden ones you can wade in but don’t expect much for pictures. That being said the ruins are quite impressive and the museum is well done.
Mike S — Google review
Just a few steps from the travertine terraces, this peaceful park is full of ancient ruins, shady trees, and calm paths to wander. It’s a great place to rest after soaking in the thermal waters and feel the layers of history all around you. ➕ Scattered Roman ruins and old stonework Quiet, green space away from the crowds Beautiful photo spots and benches to relax ➖ Not much signage or information ❤️: Worth a stroll if you’re already in Pamukkale — history and nature in one calm corner.
Kristina T — Google review
Well worth the visit and remember to bring swimming clothes. The water is warm around 28°C and I would set aside about 1 to 2 hours. They also have the food court in the same vicinity so grabbing a bite to eat and getting something to drink is a recommendation. The earlier you arrive the better and avoiding the late morning to afternoon rush is the way to go.
AB Z — Google review
One of the must visit places to experience if you go to Hierapolis...this Antique pool is known to have Thermal water with minerals which is good for your body...Honestly it is an experience worth to have.. The pool is so relaxing with warm water but be careful of the big rocks inside the pool, when you swim or walk inside the pool. The water is not very deep and you can relaxing by sitting on the big rocks. Cafe, Toilets, Lockers, shower and changing places are available by the pool. Overall very good experience.
Sandeep J — Google review
Visited Pamukkale 5th March 25. Really disappointed S & S travel by the Orange Bazzar Lara Beach didn't tell us that the Cleopatra pool had been closed since January 25. Also there are only 3 little water filled pools on the travetines as the images you see online are either very old photo shopped as the area now looks nothing like any photos. I will say however the Hierapolis are as shown online images and pretty impressive. The tour guide lifted up a wooden pallet that had been placed over part of an open aqueduct, this was the only bit of water that you could touch that was warm. The water in the 3 pools on the travetines was just above the ankles and was probably from the recent down pour of rain it was freezing cold. If you like ancient Roman ruins its worth going. If you want to see beautiful filled travetine pools don't bother they no longer exist
Tracey P — Google review
The pools are closed and dry of water, the lady in the entrance she will till you 30 euro, and once u try to pay with card she will add 10 euro without telling you. So basically scamming you. Luckily for me I checked before tapping my card. It’s just some old stones that they call it history.
HoRizoN — Google review
The pool is closed while a new structure is built around it. The guards told us that the pool would re-open in October 2025.

The Hierapolis Archaeology Museum is a small museum that requires an additional fee if you do not have a museum pass. It features three halls filled with exquisite handcrafted tombs, spulchres, and other artifacts from ancient life that are worth seeing. In addition to the indoor exhibits, there is also a garden that can be viewed from outside. Visitors can rent golf carts or electric bikes to explore the museum efficiently and at their own pace.
We had a full day tour to Pamukkale and Hierapolis city from Izmir. I didn’t expect it to be as on picture, so I was astonished when I saw just as in the pictures. After a stop at Travertines of Pamukkale, we entered Hierapolis Archaeological Museum, it’s a small museum with 2 rooms, but with very interesting statues and exhibits, I especially liked the bathtubs with the beautiful and meaningful décor.

Visited in June 2023. It is a well-preserved archaeological site with history dating 2nd Century BC. It receives lots of tourists. The site boosts other sites like the pumukkele and the ancient pool.

Hierapolis Archaeological Museum | This museum is housed in the ancient Roman Bath structure within the Hierapolis archaeological site, making it not only a place to see artifacts but also an artifact itself. The restored bath complex displays impressive collections of statues, sarcophagi, and decorative reliefs excavated from Hierapolis and nearby Laodicea, Colossae, and Tripolis. The well-preserved sculptures from the Roman and Hellenistic periods provide a powerful glimpse into the life and art of this ancient region. If you're already visiting the travertines or Apostle Philip’s tomb, this museum is absolutely worth a stop. The museum does not require a separate ticket—it is included in the general entrance fee for Hierapolis and Pamukkale. #HierapolisMuseum #RomanBath #AncientSculptures #PamukkaleTravel

This Museum is also part of the city, a great place to explore. It is located inside an old Roman bath building, which makes the experience even more special. The museum has a rich collection of ancient statues, sarcophagi, coins, and other artifacts from the Roman and Byzantine periods, take a look at uploading. Everything is well organized and easy to understand. The atmosphere is calm and peaceful, no one allowed to speak up, and the view around the museum is also beautiful. Of course a must-visit for anyone interested in history and ancient cultures.

Hierapolis Archaeological Museum – A hidden gem where history comes alive! 🏛️✨ After exploring the ancient city of Hierapolis and the surreal Pamukkale terraces, I stepped into the Hierapolis Archaeological Museum — and it turned out to be one of the most rewarding parts of the visit. The museum is housed inside the beautifully restored Roman bath complex, which gives it an authentic and atmospheric setting. You can almost feel the echoes of ancient times as you walk through the halls. The collection is truly impressive — Roman sarcophagi, statues of gods and emperors, intricate reliefs, coins, and everyday artifacts all beautifully displayed. My favorite section was the hall of marble sculptures, where the craftsmanship and preservation are extraordinary. The artifacts found in Hierapolis, Laodicea, and Aphrodisias are showcased with clear explanations in both Turkish and English. It’s a small museum, but very well-curated — calm, educational, and air-conditioned (a welcome break after walking in the sun!). The view from the museum grounds over the travertines is another bonus — peaceful and photogenic. 🏺 Travel Info & Tips 📍 Location: Inside the Hierapolis archaeological site, right near the Antique Pool (Cleopatra’s Pool). Entry is included in your Pamukkale/Hierapolis ticket. 🕐 Opening Hours: Usually open every day, 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM (may vary seasonally). 💰 Entry Fee: Free with your Hierapolis-Pamukkale ticket (no separate charge). 🕰️ Best Time to Visit: Late morning or afternoon, when the sun is strongest outside — perfect time to cool off indoors and learn about what you’ve just seen among the ruins. ⚠️ Precautions: Don’t rush — even though it’s small, every room has fascinating details. Photography is allowed, but avoid flash. Bring water — the walk from the ruins or travertines to the museum can be warm. 🚫 Things to Avoid: Don’t skip it thinking it’s “just another museum.” It completes the story of Hierapolis and makes the ruins more meaningful. Avoid visiting too close to closing time — you’ll want at least 45 minutes to appreciate it fully. ✨ Overall: The Hierapolis Archaeological Museum is a must-see for anyone visiting Pamukkale. It’s not just a collection of artifacts — it’s a window into the grandeur of the ancient world. The combination of history, architecture, and peaceful atmosphere makes it a perfect finale after exploring the ruins. A compact yet captivating museum that brings Hierapolis to life — beautifully preserved, thoughtfully displayed, and deeply inspiring. 🏺🌿
Vibhor B — Google review
Really got inspired and admired by seeing the historic monuments and sculptures which were built perfectly in the old centuries without much technology. Also appreciated that they are still protected by the Archeological department. The museum inside is well maintained and created facilities for the tourists to explore this beautiful ancient Greek-Roman city. A must visit place for history and heritage seekers. Buggy car service is available at the entrance with an affordable ticket.

This is a small museum located inside the City of Hierapolis. It isivated inside one of the ancient bath houses. It has several artefacts from the Greek-Roman period. There are only a few rooms and can be covered in 30 mins. Guide is not required as descriptions are present with artefacts.

The Travertines of Pamukkale are a must-see natural wonder in Turkey. These stunning thermal pools, formed after earthquakes, are surrounded by white limestone and offer a breathtaking view with rolling hills and ancient ruins in the background. Accessible through rough rocks, the lukewarm water is clean and clear, perfect for wading around. Visitors can take a dip in Cleopatra's pool and capture memorable moments with photographers available on-site.
We were so nearly put off by the bad google reviews of people expecting a paradise of blue water everywhere! But in reality, this place is so beautiful and has so much history. It is worth going for the amphitheater alone and the travertines is a bonus! We recommend visiting the South Gate at 6.30am to see this amazing place without other tourists. There are also hot air balloons that fly at 6am and it is stunning to watch them! An absolute must do!
William C — Google review
We were attending this attraction on Saturday, 11 o'clock. It took us 3.5 hours to get there from Fethiye so we couldn't make it earlier and we were ready to see many people inside , even though it wasn't high season anymore. You make a big circle on the car to get to the official parking lot, pay 120 tl for parking and then get through the gates. In October 2025 1 ticket costs 30 Euro and you pay in liras. Then you start your journey using a golf car or walking The territory is huge. At first, you walk through the ancient city and it takes you around 20 minutes to get to the travertines. There are not many people around, they are all chilling at the pools. There's a beautiful garden and mountains around your way, many benches and tables for the picnic which is really nice. You can also visit the museum and the ancient theatre. The travertines are very beautiful in the sunlight. Not all of them are filled with water but you can still take great pictures Some people get deep down so they are alone in the bigger area, all of the tourists are concentrated on top of the pools. You need to take of the shoes to get there, the stones can be slippery but the water is pretty warm. The views around are breathtaking! You can also enjoy your time at the cafes right next to the travertines and get some snacks. So I'd say it was worth visiting once in the life time (in the sunny weather and preferably earlier on the weekday) however the entrance fee is very high and I'm not sure it's equivalent to the experience you get
Анна М — Google review
Pamukkale is impressive from the first step. The snow-white terraces and azure pools look almost unreal, like a natural chalk castle. Hiking trails allow you to get close to the cascades; the water is warm and pleasantly tickles your feet. There are many tourists, so peaceful photos are rare-arrive early in the morning or late in the evening. There's an entrance fee, and some terraces are closed for conservation, but the overall view is breathtaking. Nearby Hierapolis boasts a well-preserved Roman amphitheater it's worth a visit. Bring comfortable shoes, a swimsuit, and water; don't leave litter and respect the securit rules. I highly recommend it it's one of those places that's easier to experience than to describe.
P — Google review
It is an amazing natural formation by accumulating minerals from the flowing hot spring water. There is a dedicated section where tourists can experience travertine and hot spring water under their feet. It is required to enter the travertine area without shoes and socks. There is a self serve cafeteria. There are always a huge number of tourists visiting it. Considering that there is an entry fee, the authority could increase the number of WC facilities.
Dipak O — Google review
A magical place for me! The real experience of walking barefoot (like most) or with some bathing shoes in this white marvel is bar none. Even though there is a lot of water, I found the surfaces to be not slippery at all. You can spend a few hours just running around the hill. Enterprise of €30 is a bit steep.
Oliviu G — Google review
We entered through the South Gate, which is the closest entrance to the travertines. If you’re visiting with children, elderly people, or anyone with walking difficulties, it’s better to take a buggy car — tickets for it are available right after the ticket check. The amphitheatre is a bit uphill, but worth the short climb. Many of the travertine pools had water during our visit, and all the main attractions — the travertines, ancient amphitheatre, Cleopatra Pool, and other monuments — are located within the same area. Unfortunately, the Cleopatra Pool was closed for renovation when we visited. Please note that the entry gate opens only at 8 a.m. We arrived at 6:30 a.m. but were told that even the parking area gates would open only at 8 a.m. We still got to enjoy watching the hot air balloons take off around 6:30 a.m. from outside the gate, which was a beautiful experience.
Jayashankar B — Google review
Very beautiful place. Very interesting. It is better to come with short clothes or a swimsuit. It's just a shame that it's so expensive for tourists. For tourists 30 euros and for Turks 4 euros. At the checkout they are trying to sell headphones For 10 euros. That they don't need them at all.
Dovile — Google review
It’s definitely an attraction worth visiting, but I don’t feel the €30 entrance fee is justified. The place is rich in history and the audio guide shares fascinating stories from the past, making it a wonderful site to learn from. Still, the price feels a bit too high. I hope the government could consider lowering the entrance fee or at least offering discounted rates for groups. The colors give the impression of being painted, and uncovering the history behind them makes the experience truly engaging.

Park
Pamukkale Natural Park is a diverse family-friendly destination featuring numerous pools for bathing and canoeing. While it's a unique natural wonder, some visitors advise against visiting during the scorching summer months due to extreme heat. They recommend bringing towels and shoes, and suggest planning the trip for autumn or spring instead. Despite being a touristy area with limited dining options during COVID-19, it's considered a must-see in Turkey.
Oh my God. It is such a special place. I highly recommend going early in the morning , less crowded and less hot. Even the temperature of the water was perfect. Free ticket for disable people
Francesca P — Google review
Overrated and poorly managed This place was a huge disappointment. It’s dirty, overcrowded, and the staff are far from polite. Such a natural wonder deserves better care, but sadly it’s been left to deteriorate. Visitors are expected to walk barefoot, but the surface is hard and uncomfortable. I wore sea shoes for protection, yet a staff member shouted at me — while others freely wore flip-flops without any issue. Yes, you can take beautiful photos here, but don’t be fooled — in reality, it’s just a scam dressed up as paradise.
Maria M — Google review
Pamukkale is truly a natural landscape that’s worth visiting. Beyond the stunning white terraces and mineral-rich thermal pools, the area also includes the ancient site of Hierapolis and its museum, making it a perfect combination of nature, history, and culture. The entrance fee is around 30 euros, which is reasonable considering everything you get to experience. When visiting, it’s a good idea to bring your swimsuit, as some of the pools allow for wading, and make sure to have appropriate shoes, since you’re not allowed to wear them in the terraces. The terraces themselves are absolutely beautiful, and the views are breathtaking. However, I would recommend avoiding August if possible. We went in August, and it was extremely crowded and uncomfortably hot. The massage areas and cafés are available for snacks and drinks, but during peak season there are long lines, so it’s hard to enjoy them properly. Overall, to fully enjoy Pamukkale—including the terraces, pools, Hierapolis, and museum—you should plan to spend about 3–4 hours there. Despite the crowds in summer, it’s an unforgettable experience and a place I would highly recommend to anyone visiting the area.
Panagiota G — Google review
Wrapped in cold air and warm memories. Pamukkale , you’re pure winter magic !! Pamukkale in winter is more than a destination it’s an experience that fills you with calm and wonder. A place where time slows down, where nature shows her softest side, and where every snowflake feels like a story. Definitely coming back
Selva P — Google review
The Traverine Pools are amazing and a Natural Wonder so millions of people are drown to them. Customer Service is non existent in this area, so don't go with high expectations. The entrance fee starts at €30 euros including the two entrance fees for the Hierapolis and the Travertine Terraces. Both quite extraordinary and the price could be justified, but not with the current management. What was disappointing, that there was no internet connection to access the online audio - which I was looking forward to use. We already purchased headphones in another site, but I would have been so much more disappointed I have purchased 4 of them for all of us. We found a dissolving poo (possibly dog poo) in one of the pools. I took pictures of an insects in the a few others. We thought they are leeches, so we stayed out of the water (especially after the poo) , but the are possibly Solder Flu Larvae, which is quite amazing, that they survive the temperature. I understand that it must be hard to dealing with the number of tourist all year around, but there should be more to ensure that the water is safe for all to bathe in.
Kinga S — Google review
We hesitated because many reviews characterize this park as a tourist trap. Partially true, the closest to the top travertine formations are killed by mass tourism: they look dirty and dry. But we entered from the Sahin Hotel in the morning, and we were almost alone. The impressions are magnificent - the colors, blinding whiteness and water streams. The main parts of Hierapolis are also very crowded, but the view from the amphitheater and itself are worth it. The park is huge, and tourist flows are limited to only a few points. So, advice - after passing them, just get lost in history, ruins, tombs and nature.

Only go before 9.30 or after 17 because it is full and you won't appreciate the view. Ask for only the 30 euros ticket WITHOUT audio-guide. If you say nothing the will include the audio guide for 10 euros extra ! 🙄

The Hierapolis ancient theater is an impressive part of the ancient city, situated on a slope with a view that makes the short hike worthwhile. The museum showcases excavated ruins, including the facade of the library and sculptures of Greek gods. The amphitheater, one of the largest and most magnificent ancient buildings, is accessible by walking or shuttle. With its stunning architecture and capacity for over 10,000 people at its peak, it offers a glimpse into the Roman empire's grandeur.
It is an amazing hand-made theater. According to our guide's introduction, the capacity was over 11k attending. It was not only a place for music, theater, and concert, the empire/ king was organizing the wars and other related activities. The sound system is surprising, you speak a bit louder it resonates through the theater everyone can hear from every corner. Like, we tested by clapping, it is resounding even louder. It is located almost at the top of the city, you can enjoy a stunning wide view around. There you see a lot of tourists like young couples, families, tours, and students like us😒 Most of foreign tourists prefer the car to take them around the city but i don't agree on it, i would recommend you to walk lift and right to explore the city. Everything is SUPER. Consider the visit time, ideally morning and afternoon.
Bassir ع — Google review
The Hierapolis Ancient Theater is truly impressive — one of the main highlights when visiting Pamukkale. It’s amazingly well-preserved and gives you a glimpse into how massive and grand the performances must have been back in ancient times. Built during the Roman period, it could seat thousands of people and was used for plays, music, and even gladiator shows. Most visitors online call it a must-see, and I’d agree. I came here as part of a tour group, so I didn’t take any local guide, but the tour provided enough info to appreciate the site. You can take a buggy to the top for around USD 50, but honestly, it’s not worth it — walking is much better and gives you time to enjoy the scenery. But if you cant walk then you'll need to take it then. There’s a WC available nearby, but the ladies’ WC tends to get crowded. Around the Cotton Castle area, there are a few shops and cafés, but prices are on the higher side. It gets quite hot here, so bring sunscreen, a hat, and some water. Overall, it’s a great experience and definitely worth the walk!
Surendran M — Google review
Hierapolis is an absolutely phenomenal historical site that truly stands out! Its uniqueness lies in the seamless blend of ancient Roman ruins with the breathtaking natural wonder of Pamukkale's white travertines. Walking through the vast necropolis, the incredibly well-preserved theater, and the ancient baths, you can almost hear the echoes of past civilizations. The atmosphere is profoundly serene and awe-inspiring, especially as the sun casts long shadows over the ruins. And the views? Simply unforgettable! The panoramic vistas of the "Cotton Castle" combined with the sprawling ancient city are a photographer's dream. A must-visit for any history or nature enthusiast!
Tomasz F — Google review
The Hierapolis Ancient Theatre is one of the most stunning and well-preserved Roman theatres in Turkey. Sitting high above Pamukkale, it offers not only an incredible glimpse into history but also breathtaking views of the travertine terraces and valley below. The scale of the theatre is impressive, with seating for thousands, and the decorative details on the stage area are still visible despite centuries of wear. Walking through the steps and standing at the top gives you a true sense of how grand performances must have felt here. Be prepared for a bit of a climb from the main site—it’s uphill, but absolutely worth it once you see the theatre in full. I recommend visiting early in the morning or later in the evening when the crowds thin out. If you’re already visiting Pamukkale, don’t miss this highlight—it’s the crown jewel of Hierapolis and a must-see for history lovers and photographers alike.

The ancient theater of Hierapolis in Pamukkale impresses with its scale and state of preservation: the steps and stage are well preserved, and the acoustics are truly outstanding—even a quiet voice can be heard throughout the amphitheater. The upper tiers offer excellent views of the ruins and the valley. I recommend visiting early in the morning or at sunset to avoid the heat and capture the soft light for photos. Be sure to bring water and comfortable shoes, as the stone steps are slippery. A must-see for history buffs: the combination of architecture and setting makes this place unforgettable.

The Hierapolis Ancient Theatre, built in the 2nd century AD, is a grand Roman structure seating over 12,000 people. It features beautifully preserved carvings and stunning views over Pamukkale’s white terraces.

This is an ancient Greek theatre. The theatre is well preserved. It is large and built of stones. You can walk on the stairs and enjoy the view. A guide is recommended to understand about this place. A must visit spot in Hierapolis.

Stage area reconstruction is impressive and the overall steepness of the seating area is cool. Definitely worth the walk.

This company used to be good. Now they have changed. The paragliding flight did not last more than 2min - the price is the same as every other agencies offering longer flights. On top of that, they charge you nearly the same amount of the flight for the photos & videos. Pick up at hotel was 30min late. However pilots are experienced and the flight was safe.

A must visit when in Turkey. Unlike anything else in the world. Only 5 pools remain , some are cold and some are warm. You need to walk barefoot into the pools. The "Cleopatra" pool charges $32 Liras to swim in. You get the same water in the pools for free.

The Gymnasium in Hierapolis, an ancient city located near the Pamukkale terraces, was a significant social center with only a few Doric columns remaining from its 1st-century structure. Originally built near thermal springs for their healing properties, this site also holds historical significance as the place where Apostle St. Philip was martyred in the 1st century AD.
The Hierapolis Gymnasium, nestled within the ancient city of Hierapolis near Pamukkale, offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the rich history and architectural marvels of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built during the Roman period, this monumental structure served as a center for physical education, intellectual pursuits, and social gatherings, reflecting the importance of education and culture in ancient times. Upon entering the Gymnasium, visitors are struck by the grandeur of its well-preserved remains. The vast courtyard, surrounded by colonnades and adorned with marble statues and inscriptions, evokes the splendor of ancient Greek and Roman architecture. The impressive scale of the structure, with its towering columns and intricate detailing, is a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the ancient builders. Exploring the interior of the Gymnasium, visitors can discover the remains of various rooms and chambers, including lecture halls, libraries, and bathing facilities. These spaces once bustled with activity, as scholars, philosophers, and athletes gathered to engage in intellectual discourse, study the arts and sciences, and train their bodies in preparation for athletic competitions. One of the highlights of the Gymnasium is its well-preserved mosaic floors, which feature intricate designs and vibrant colors that have endured the passage of time. These exquisite mosaics provide valuable insights into the artistic and cultural traditions of the ancient world, showcasing scenes from mythology, daily life, and the natural world. As visitors wander through the Gymnasium, they are transported back in time to an era of intellectual enlightenment and physical prowess. The site's serene atmosphere and stunning surroundings, set against the backdrop of Pamukkale's cascading travertine terraces, make it a truly unforgettable destination for history enthusiasts and travelers alike.

To the west of the main road is the Gymnasium. The building is centered around a court, surrounded by a Doric portico at least 80 m long on the south side, recently excavated. The portico is 5.5 m high and was built by the emperor in the early 1st century AD. The Gymnasium was one of the most important buildings in the civic life of Hierapolis, and was used for physical exercise and education of the citizens. (Excerpt from the information board)

Ruins of the Gymnasium (a school complex rather than a centre for fitness!) Part of the ancient city of Hieropolis, situated immediately above the travertine terraces of Pamukkale ('Cotton Castle', named after the whiteness of the calcium deposits) The city was founded in the 2nd century BC in close proximity to the thermal spring waters for their healing properties. It's most famous inhabitant was the Apostle St Philip who was martyred here in the 1st century AD.

If you're planning a visit to Pamukkale, don't miss the enchanting experience of a hot air balloon ride with "Pamukkale Hot Air Balloons Peristrema." Imagine drifting gracefully above the stunning white mineral terraces as dawn breaks, casting a soft blush over the landscape. Each morning, balloons take off at sunrise, offering breathtaking views of both the iconic cliffs and ancient ruins below. This adventure is not only magical but also budget-friendly compared to similar experiences in Cappadocia.
This was an amazing experience, as was the crew. We had a kind and funny pilot who walked us through the whole thing beforehand, so we knew how to act in certain situations, we of course had a safe and comfortable flight and landing. This company also offers you to buy a set of pictures and videos of your ride in the balloon from a 360 camera view, which me and my family bought because the quality is great. In the end you get drinks and go your separate ways. I would 100% do this again and with his company, so it is very much recommended :)

If you're looking for an unforgettable adventure in Turkey, a hot air balloon flight over Pamukkale is an absolute must! Floating above the stunning white travertine terraces at sunrise is nothing short of magical. The Experience The adventure begins early in the morning, usually before sunrise. A shuttle picks you up from your hotel and takes you to the launch site, where you watch the crew inflate the massive balloons. As the sun starts to rise, you gently lift off, and within moments, you're soaring over the famous Cotton Castle and its thermal pools, with the ancient ruins of Hierapolis in the background. Final Verdict ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A hot air balloon ride over Pamukkale is an extraordinary experience that combines adventure, history, and breathtaking scenery. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker, a photographer, or just someone who appreciates natural beauty, this is an experience you won’t forget! Would I do it again? Absolutely! 🚀🎈

The balloon flight was a pure magical experience. We were picked up still in the dark, and watched how the balloons are filled with the air. We took off shrortly before the sunrise with dozens of other balloons. And watched from the above how the sun colours Pamukkale and surrounding valley. The flight was smooth and spectacular thanks to the pilot Oğuz. Also many thanks to Onur for organising the experience for our group, and taking care of us during ground operations. Overall it was above all expectations and very professional. Definitely would recommend to take a flight with Peristrema Balloons.

We had a lovely experience with the hot air balloon ride there and took a look on a whole other level of Pamukkale thanks to the very cooperative and professional pilot Sener Gulesen and the entire team! We had an amazing time and definitely an unforgettable memory! I definitely recommend this activity there to anyone who is going to Pamukkale !
Nicole R — Google review
Overall an OK experience, 80eur/p is a fair price. (Did not research other companies as our hotel booked this). Felt safe, we were informed about Do's and Don'ts. Rating is 3 because it surely was not 45min - as captain said 45-60min. It was barely 30min. We also did not fly over the travertines as later he said it became windy. From our view, all other balloons flew close and low over the travertines. So it was very disappointing. And from the landing spot, we had to walk over fields with sharp, dry hay and climb to reach the transport back. The drink at the end was very low quality (no alcohol) and most emphasise was on buying pictures and video from the captain. (For 30-40euros) The transport was good, on time and fast.

Exploring the Ancient Temple of Apollon is a fascinating journey through history. While the ruins may be weathered, they still offer insight into the grandeur of this historic site. Visitors can marvel at its well-preserved remnants and gain an understanding of its original size and layout. However, access to certain areas may be restricted, leaving some parts unexplored. Despite this limitation, a visit to this ancient temple provides a captivating glimpse into the past.
It is on the way to Pamukkale. I recommend you to enjoy the view because it is really beautiful. You have to see it with your own eyes. Especially with good weather and good company, you will feel wonderful.

In September 24, work was underway to restore the road leading to the Temple of Apollo. If you follow this road north, you will reach Via Frontinus. As shown in the photo, there is a wide open plain, and you can see the remains of buildings from the 1st century AD or later.

The temple of Apollo is located in the city of Hierapolis. Now only ruins are present. The wall of temple as well as statue of Apollo are still intact. There are other ruins also around it. You will have to walk some distance to reach this spot. A guide is recommended to understand about the history and ruins.

Anastasia S — Google review
Built on Plutonion, known as a religious and ancient cave, the Hierapolis Temple of Apollo is one of the oldest religious centers of the local people. Apollo met with Kybele, the Mother Goddess, in the region. Some of the old sources wrote that the priest of the Mother Goddess Kybele descended into this cave, but was not affected by the release of poisonous gas. The ruins in the Hierapolis Temple of Apollo date back to the Hellenistic period. Hierapolis Temple of Apollo is recognized by its 70-meter-long entrance steps. On the stairs at the back of the Temple of Apollo in Hierapolis, there is an area filled with pieces, capitals, column bodies and bases taken from the Temple of Apollo. Reflecting the early periods, Hierapolis is a place famous for its Temple of Apollo, vineyards and grape wines, and called Asartepe by the public. Hierapolis Temple of Apollo, located 4 km from Bahadınlar village, is a historical heritage that bears the impressions seen in local cultural centers seen in many regions of Western Anatolia.

Osmanlı Restaurant is a charming and welcoming place with friendly staff that offers a cozy atmosphere. The main meals are delicious, and the Turkish pizza and pide are particularly recommended. The restaurant provides great service, with accommodating and attentive staff members. Additionally, the ambiance is lovely, featuring traditional Turkish music and an awesome decor. It's an ideal spot to enjoy authentic Turkish cuisine after visiting the national park in Pamukkale.

Pamukkale South Gate is the ideal entrance for those with their own car or looking to access the pools early. Taxis and large tour buses also frequent this area. The preservation of artifacts and marble carvings is remarkable, although signage could be improved for easier navigation. Visitors recommend checking the weather before visiting, as cold and windy conditions can make walking difficult.
The best way to visit Pamukkale is from the South Gate, claiming barefoot on the Terraces. Than put your shoes on and continue to Heliopolis, especially the Theather! If you have time you can see the rest of the ancient city and maybe de Necropolis. Return to the Terraces when it's time for sunset, enjoy it and exit to the South Gate in the same way, on barefoot on the white travertine Terraces. You can do it after dark, while lights are along the white path. End of September was an excellent choice: agreeable temp, less crowded, great sunlight in the sunset.

At the beginning I thought the price was a bit expensive (30euros each). Although after spending some time visiting the ruins + the travestines I fall in love with this place 100% worthy, just be careful when you pay your entrance because they charge you automatically the price of the headphones, and they aren’t a good quality and they are also expensive (12-15 euros)… advise: go early morning because at 10am the place is already packed
Maria B — Google review
It is a good place to visit and has both nature wonder and history sites. South Gate is on uphill and more easy walk for seniors or people do not walk uphill in hot day. The main gate may have more fun to walk through the pools. Any good place to visit.
Kevin Y — Google review
This place is worth a visit anytime. It seems to be one of the most visited natural monuments in Turkey. We came with our own car and parked at the upper south gate to Pamukkale. 1. When getting to the lower main entrance, pay attention to take the road to the south gate up. Don't get fooled by several ominously waving people, who want to show you parking spaces. Leave them behind and follow the way up to south gate. 2. Be there as soon (or late) as possible (opening times from 6:30am-9pm). We where there at 8am and the parking was almost full with cars and busses. (approx. 100 cars and 30 busses will fit there). Parking for a car costs 120 TRY. When you are late (parking full - dolu), you have to park along the road and have to walk uphill, to get to the entrance. At noon it will be very hot there (in summer!) and very crowded, when all the tourists fall out of their busses. 3. Get the (cheapest) ticket (30€) from the booth (turkish citizens pay only 100 TRY). Don't buy the version with audioguide (you can use the official Turkish Museum (MüzeKart) app and the QR-code on the ticket, to have the same audioguide on your smartphone). They will try to talk you this up. With the cheaper ticket you can also visit the Hierapolis ruins. there is no control inside the area. 4. Take a bag with you, to carry your shoes (you have to go barefoot on the travertine) and some water. You will need it!! Don't forget your hat and glasses. 5. At the first moment you will be a bit disapointed, when seeing most of the natural pools are empty. There are several pools artificially filled with water along the walking path down (or up), which you can enter and bath in. The travertine is very slippery at several places. The upper pools and path is very dirty. Head down to the middle pools. They are almost white and cleaner. And the chance for an empty pool (photo) is likely higher than in the upper pools. 6. At the upper end of the main travertine walking path you can head to the small park, to have a view to the more natural northern pools. Here you are not allowed, to walk on the travertine, and some ot them are naturally filled with water. 7. Visit the ruins of Hierapolis and the antique theatre. 8. You will need minimum 3 hours to visit. Even more, when visiting also Hierapolis ruins.
Philipp K — Google review
The travertine site is spectacular but mismanaged. Some people use this unique site as a pig bath. Some of the travertine pools are protected against tourist vandals and are out of reach, those are beautiful. I would create a boarded walk to allow everyone enjoy the view obstructed. Another problem is the combined entry to Hierapolis. The ticket price is very high for foreign visitors €30 while Turkish nationals pay 100 Tl. The 2 sites should be separated as they have little in common and attract different crowds. Although, I have to admit that goofy tourists that are only interested posing in front of various historical masterpieces, are making the visit a pain even in Hierapolis, Ephesus and everywhere else.
Bogdan H — Google review
The South Gate offers the quickest route to the famous travertine pools without a long walk. The South Gate is the best entrance for those arriving by car, taxi, or tour bus, the largest parking lot on the site. It’s situated at the top of the hill, allowing you to walk downhill through the travertines. You must walk barefoot on the stunning white terraces. Be sure to be careful, as some areas can be slippery. Arrive early, to avoid the midday crowds and heat, plan to arrive as soon as the gate opens. Bring a Bag, you will need a bag to carry your shoes, as they are not permitted on the travertines. Stay Hydrated: The sun can be intense, so carry water with you. I went in August, during the summer, some of the travertine pools may have very little or no water. This is because the water flow is carefully controlled for conservation purposes, which can make parts of the landscape look dry and less beautiful than at other times of the year.
Kaphao N — Google review
Visiting the Pamukkale Travertines was an absolutely magical experience! The natural beauty of the gleaming white terraces, cascading pools, and crystal-clear waters is simply breathtaking – it truly feels like stepping into a dream. Walking barefoot on the warm, soft calcium deposits while soaking in the mineral-rich thermal waters is an unforgettable experience that rejuvenates both the body and the mind. The surrounding views of the landscape, combined with the historical ruins of Hierapolis, make this destination a perfect blend of nature and history. Highly recommend visiting early in the morning or near sunset to enjoy the views with fewer crowds. A must-visit for anyone traveling to Turkey!
Naveen S — Google review
We deliberately planned our Turkey-Greece-Turkey trip to pass through Pamukkale on our second-to-last day of our 9-day adventure. By then, we were well-accustomed to the heat - 42-43°C (108-109°F)! We didn't climb into the water, but the views were absolutely stunning. There were plenty of options for food and cold drinks to keep us refreshed. Pro tip we learned from a local that evening: we had missed the red pool just a couple of kilometers west of the main site! Make sure to visit that one too if you're in the area. The famous white terraces of Pamukkale are truly breathtaking - a natural wonder that's definitely worth the visit, even in the intense Turkish summer heat! ☀️

It was a very nice and unique experience. First it was a bit difficult to locate their office in Pamukkale, but after talking with Ms. Hayat in phone everything went very smoothly. My only complaint would be that the pilot, although a very nice and energetic guy, was always yelling from our balloon to the other balloons in air, asking for information or just for almost nothing (and all the pilots had actually Walkie-Talkie and he could use it, too!) and this was ruining a bit the peace up there. But still very nice experience. If you go to Pamukkale, you should try this ride.

Checking off another item from the bucket list✅ For anyone who dreams of soaring above breathtaking landscapes, a hot air balloon ride in Turkey often tops the bucket list and the same was mine. Like most travelers, my first choice was Cappadocia, the famed land of fairy chimneys. However, as the winds of fate (and the actual winds) would have it, my balloon ride was canceled not once, but twice due to bad weather. Disheartened yet undeterred, I decided to pivot to another incredible try to my luck. While Cappadocia remains a dream for another day, the hot air balloon ride at Pamukkale was nothing short of magical. Pamukkale, known for its surreal white travertine terraces and thermal springs, had already been a highlight of my itinerary. I hadn’t initially planned for a balloon ride here, but I learned that Pamukkale offers its own version of this magical experience. With clear skies forecasted, I eagerly signed up It reminded me that sometimes, life’s detours lead to unexpected wonders. If you ever find yourself in Turkey, don’t overlook Pamukkale as a ballooning destination. The experience will leave you with memories to cherish for a lifetime. My Turkish adventure had gifted me not just an unforgettable ride, but a lesson in embracing the unexpected.

We were total 8 people join the paragliding during the sunrise time in January 2024, and it was a super wonderful experience. All the pilots were very professional and kind. The price of paragliding is 33 USD per person. The photos and videos is 30 USD, the 360 degree photos is 10 USD after discount (original 20$). The person who contacted with me was nice and patient to answer my questions. I do really recommend this company to do balloon and paragiding flight.

Ploutonion, located in the town of Hierapolis, has a rich history dating back to the 2nd century BC. It was known for its therapeutic waters and ritual practices at the smelly vent, attracting various settlers including Jewish and Roman communities. The site features statues of Hades and Cerberus near the Hierapolis Theater, offering visitors a glimpse into ancient beliefs.
The Ploutonion is thought to be the gateway to the underworld and is one of the moderately visited places within the ruins. It lies between the pools of Cleopatra and the Amphitheater. If you have 5 to 10 minutes to spare and you are in the vicinity, then it is definitely worth the quick detour.

Beautifully framed entrance to the cave that takes to the underworld. Emitting deadly gases, that were also used in sacrificings. Watched over by Hades and Cerberus.
Karmo — Google review
The Ploutonion (Gate to the Underworld) at Hierapolis is one of the most fascinating and mysterious ancient sites I’ve ever visited. Once believed to be an entrance to Hades, this sacred cave was dedicated to Pluto (Hades) and Persephone. In ancient times, priests performed rituals here, and the toxic gases escaping from the underground fissure were thought to be the breath of the god of the underworld. Today, the area is well-preserved and safely accessible, surrounded by ruins of temples and travertine formations. Standing near it, you can still feel the eerie energy and imagine the fear and reverence it inspired in ancient worshippers. The site is small but historically powerful — truly a hidden gem within Hierapolis.
Vibhor B — Google review
When we got there it was all surrounded by fences. It's nice and interesting to see. Specially the hot water area where they used to do some rituals. It's considered the gate to the underworld

Not many people wonder through the Plutonium but that's not because it is not beautiful, but because there are many other things to see around and that is all sunny with no shade. Also, the paths are not very inviting, but the ruins are very nice.

stunning no doubt, but terrible experience without a car. lots of scammers in Pamukkale trying to target families with elderly and kids. 30€ ppx entry and scammers lying that there are additional costs to enter the Hierapolis. Charged 45€ ppx just to drive us to the south gate so that we do not have to walk both ways. That is 90€ for a 10min car ride. It is not just this experience but in general the entire town has people touting you to sell you tours etc at exorbitant prices, every restaurant offers you free dish etc / 10% off when practically every restaurant is empty.

Experiencing the Pamukkale Hot Air Balloon ride at sunrise is truly a magical adventure that should be on every traveler's bucket list. The breathtaking views of the stunning natural pools, free from crowds at dawn, create an unforgettable atmosphere. The flight itself is exhilarating and offers a unique perspective over the picturesque landscape of Pamukkale. Booking online was straightforward, with prompt assistance from a friendly crew who guided us to their office early in the morning.
Absolutely fascinating. 💯 % professional. The pilot was great. Dilek has helped from the beginning to the end. She got us picked up from the hotel and dropped us back to our hotel. The stuff was brilliant, kind and welcoming. Thank you for the ride and the champagne at landing. 💯💫👍

We went on the hot air balloon tour in Pamukkale very early, around 5–6 AM from Antalya. The total cost for our trip, including food, was €156. It was an unforgettable experience with absolutely stunning views, especially watching the sunrise. The only downside was that we were not allowed to bring our 360 camera, so we had to buy their photos and videos for €30, which were not true 360 and had poor shots. They also gave us a diploma confirming we flew with a hot air balloon. Overall, it’s not a terrifying experience, but it’s definitely worth doing at least once.

I will start with - this was worth every penny. Balloon flight itself is an amazing feeling and experience. Flight over Pamukkale - magic. So I made my reservation by myself online. The crew was very helpful and responsive. Within minutes operations center contacted me to assist with reservation, and provide directions to get to their office. We decided to get to the office by ourselves. 5:00 in the morning the office was open and we were kindly welcomed by operation manager. Minutes later we were picked by a comfortable bus and driven to the starting point. We witnessed the whole balloon preparation process. Afterwards we started floating silently in cool morning air. We were happy and amazed. The crew was very professional and they left nothing to coincidence. We felt safe all the time. This was a once in a lifetime experience I can with clear conscience recommend. Ordering this experience directly from locals, bypassing the middleman, saves money and supports local community.

Nestled on a hill just north of the ancient city of Hierapolis, St. Philippe Martyrion stands as a testament to the region's rich historical tapestry.

We enjoyed ourselves and it was very informative. The ruins are cool especially the reconstructions but also just lots of columns and carving laying about. The museum was also very good. It was hot but there are numerous fountains and shady benches and picnic tables, cafe prices are relatively reasonable considering.

The Hierapolis ancient theater, a UNESCO heritage site in Turkey, is an incredibly well-preserved structure initially built around 60 AD during the reign of Hadrian. Despite collapsing due to an earthquake in the 7th century, it once accommodated 15,000 spectators for various sports, cultural events, and imperial activities. Extensively restored from 2004 to 2014, it retains over 90% of its original features.

Joseph ( — Google review
This is an ancient Greek theatre. The theatre is well preserved. It is large and built of stones. You can walk on the stairs and enjoy the view. A guide is recommended to understand about this place. A must visit spot in Hierapolis.
Alok A — Google review
Stage area reconstruction is impressive and the overall steepness of the seating area is cool. Definitely worth the walk.

Beautiful but small cave that seems yet untouched by mass tourism. Entry fee of 60 liras seemed fair.

Marvellous natural formation. It is the second Pamukkale but in the cave. The road is terrible, it is not part of museum card. The stairs are under water so be prepared.
Çağatay C — Google review
This is a cool cave to explore! Not very large but very interesting. We took our shoes off to walk because the path is flooded. Next to the cave is a public park with playground, picnic area and a lovely swimming pool with fresh water flowing through it. And clean toilet too!
Melora P — Google review
Cool place to visit if you are driving near by. It is like mini Pamukkale under the ground. It is worth going in with swimming shoes or beach shoes as the cave ground is full of water. There is a big parking lot and the parking is included to the price. The site itself is small, it doesn’t take long to see the cave. There is a pool outdoors where you can swim. It was filled with kids mainly. There are changing rooms and showers that are free of charge. There are no sun beds by the pool therefore not comfortable to stay longer by the pool. In one of the water sources there are lots of many turtles 🐢
Virginia B — Google review
The cave is said to be more than 2.5 million years old, 190 meters long, and 14 meters deep. It is indeed a geological wonder and is definitely worth visiting if published photos are of interest to you. However, in this review, I will not focus on the technical aspects of the cave since these can be found on the internet. I will rather focus on points that the visitor needs to know before he comes, so please take consideration of the bullets below. 1. The cave is about a 45-minute drive from Pamukkale by car and is not close to any other tourist attraction site. You pay at the entrance (not sure if the Müze Kart option is admissible here) and they let you take your car inside where a decent parking lot is available. It can accommodate buses too. 2. When I went in May 2025, toilets were still unfinished (under construction), so I expect they will be ready in a couple of months. Until then, toilets in petrol stations on your way are a must if you’re “in distress”. 3. As soon as you park and get out of your car, you start to smell a bad odor, very much similar to that of rotten eggs or sewers. I first thought that the odor is coming from a nearby open sewage manhole but, instead of decreasing as I moved towards the cave entrance, it increased. It turned out that the smell is emitted from the cave and (as I discovered later) it is due to the Sulphur-based chemical composition of the water inside. The severity of the smell is not to be underestimated. To me, it was striking and made me cut my visit short. If you have breathing problems or are an odor-sensitive person, don’t come. Note that the vapors inside the cave do not represent a hazard to a healthy person. Just repelling. 4. The wooden/concrete stairs running into the depth of the cave are slippery and the water runs over them with abundance. The water and the slipping risk necessitate wearing suitable shoes before coming: waterproof up to the ankle and slip resistant. Some people in other reviews recommended wearing flip-flops but I’m strongly against that. Flip-flops are extremely slippery. 5. If you suffer from knee issues you might face difficulties. Though handrails are available, the height & span of the stair treads are irregular. 6. There are bats in the cave, a lot of bats, but seemingly harmless. Hope my review was helpful. Enjoy your visit.
Muhammad K — Google review
Small compared to some famous cave systems. But the travertine is lively. It was very cheap to get in and we had it almost to ourselves. Definitely worth a visit
David M — Google review
Amazing cave. The size is small, it takes maximum 5 mins to walk around + photos 10 min. In summer time they have a pool with thermal water, in winter the pool is empty. On the territory there are a toilet and a small shop where you can buy sweets and drinks.
Artem P — Google review
This is a well preserved cave located in Denizli, Turkey. It is a short and easy hike to the cave entrance, and the cave itself is not very large, but it is still a beautiful sight to see. The natural water that flows through the cave is a beautiful turquoise color, and the cave walls are covered in stunning travertine formations. The cave is open to visitors for a small fee, and the hike to the entrance is only about 10 minutes long. Once you reach the cave, you can walk through the main chamber and admire the natural beauty of the cave. There are also a few small side chambers that you can explore. The cave is not very large, so you can easily see it all in about 30 minutes. However, the short visit is well worth it for the chance to see such a beautiful natural wonder.

Historical landmark
Frontinus Gate, located at the north gate of Pamukkale, is a historical landmark that served as the prominent entrance to the ancient Roman city. This well-preserved structure made of blocks with three arches offers visitors a glimpse into ancient times. It's recommended for history enthusiasts and teachers visiting the area. The quiet and relatively empty surroundings allow for peaceful exploration within the ruins, making it an interesting spot to visit.
This gate is a monumental entrance to the Roman city, leading to a large open public space (Greek word: Plateia, meaning: town square, open public space) 14 meters wide, which runs through the entire settlement. The Frontinus Gate is said to have been dedicated by Sextus Julius Frontinus to the emperor Domitian in 84 AD. (Some information from the information board)
